take a break YBG ball short story winner THE STORY BEGAN… Cassandra the extremely sassy and flamboyant dragon, decided to leave her tranquil island home to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. BUT… did she have enough spare income after contributing to her pension to fund an adequate retirement income, to really have the adventure of a lifetime.

DID YOU KNOW Otters have a pouch in their fur to store their favourite rocks. HAVE A FUN FACT? let us know - info@gsymedia.gg

AND THEN… she met a handsome dragon from private equity who persuaded her to invest in his epic high risk return fund. AN IDEA WAS FORMED… she invested with her then husband dragon in giant dragon adult toys and her fortune soon began to flood in. IT WAS BRILLIANT… Adult toys and money, what more could a girl want? She was still young and could enjoy both for the rest of her life. SURPRISINGLY… only one of these fully stimulated her. Was it the money the business of the product. Every one thought that this story made no sense. But the dragon decided to carry on regardless. LATER… The dragon got to old to fully appreciate the adult toys so she started her own enterprise selling the adult toys. SO… she learnt that the wise dragon is the one who plans ahead. Adult toys, fast cars and yacht don’t pay for themselves. IN THE END… Cassandra looked out upon the blue horizon remembering her sassy life and thinking maybe someone, somewhere, will learn from it.

DON'T LET THE FUN

FLY AWAY Words Jessamy Baldwin

#17. AUGUST 2017. THE FUN ISSUE

UPFRONT / FUN

EVEN AS YOU SAY THE WORD, you can’t help but smile: ‘Fun!’ Your eyes become brighter, your thoughts turn sunnier and your heart beats faster. Fun is something we crave and prioritise from a young age and it’s a concept we should always value. Without fun in our lives, we become bored and indeed boring. As children, the pursuit of fun dominates the best part of our early days. From hide and seek in the garden and baking cakes (translation: eating raw batter) to painting elaborate wall art and flying kites in the wind, as youngsters we foster a knack for pleasure seeking. In our youth, fun is a parent-child currency of sorts. Being naughty? No party. Hiding your broccoli under the table? No sleepover. Making your bed? Sure, go play in the garden. Since time began (I’m sure of it) parents have used our love for ‘playtime’ to coax us into good behaviour. And it works. When we’re young, we’ll do anything for fun. So why is it that as we get older, ‘the real world’ can sap the fun out of things? More importantly, why do we let it? According to Psychology today, the average four year old laughs 300 times a day, but most 40 year olds only four times. Yes, we have exams, careers, bills and families to think about. But it’s important not to let the fun fizzle out of our lives. When we make time for exciting activities, spontaneous escapes or interesting hobbies alongside our everyday responsibilities, we become happier and more content regardless of whether we’re ‘working’ or ‘playing’.

to dye your hair a different colour? Call your hairdresser. My husband and I recently booked a spontaneous trip to France – granted it wasn’t anything as exciting as Bora Bora or the Maldives – but we had THE best time. We stayed in Air Bnbs, explored hidden trails, kayaked through a giant gorge and my rusty GCSE French even got an airing – not pretty, but tres amusant. We all fall into ‘fun –ruts’ from time to time – it’s totally normal, and sometimes it can seem like everything is just a tad #intense. The last year has been so busy for me. It’s been full of big life moments. I got married, moved to a new city, got a dog, started my own business and bought a house. It’s been equal parts incredible and stressful. So, sometimes I’ve forgotten to enjoy the little things because the ‘big things’ have taken over a little. But, you can do both. Reading, walking beside the sea, listening to music whilst gazing out of a train window, cooking, having drinks with friends, date nights, running, going to the cinema, dancing until your feet hurt, swimming in a lake under the moonlight – these little things can inject more fun into your life each and every day. It’s the quotidian rhythm that can bring us the biggest sense of fulfilment. If you’re always waiting for the big moments – like getting engaged or moving to a new country – your life will be full of mediocre days that build up towards a few momentous ones.

“Go and play. Run around. Build something. Break something. Climb a tree. Get dirty. Get in some trouble. Have some fun.” Brom, The Child Thief

To really enjoy life you’ve got to focus on how you can achieve a sense of joy in the short term, as in today, not next month or next year. Stop thinking, thinking, thinking and be, in the words of Eckhart Tolle, ‘fully present in the now’. There’s a famous quote that says: ‘Life is what happens whilst you’re busy making plans’ – and it’s 100% true. Life can pass us by if we’re always focused on tomorrow. There will always be another tomorrow, but never another today. Sure, book a holiday for next August. It’s nice to have things to look forward to. But it’s essential you don’t direct all your energy into those future events, or equally, reminisce about the past all day long. To inject more fun into your life, write down all the crazy, scary, outrageous, outside-the-box things you want to do… and start blimmin well doing them. Want to skydive? Book it. Want to travel to South America? Get on a plane. Want

15

We’ve got to find the fun now.

Having a sense of humour is key. For me, being able to make fun of yourself is one of the most attractive qualities in a person. People who take themselves too seriously are just the worst. And taking yourself too seriously is simply the fear of failure or looking silly in front of your peers. As Oprah Winfrey says, ‘there are no failures’ in life, just lessons. If you want to have more fun, surround yourself with people you can laugh with - it’s simple science. Research has shown that laughter reduces levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine and dopamine and it can also increase health enhancing hormones such as endorphins and infection fighting antibodies. Don’t forget to be silly either. My parents are great examples of the ‘age is just a number’ adage. Yesterday they both swung on rope swings 20 ft above the ground near the Fairy Ring. I nearly had a heart attack watching my 60 year old Dad do his best Tarzan impression, but they were having the time of their lives. And so should we all.

Meet Kura

UPFRONT / PET HERO

17

'Kura’ is the gentlest of Sheltie dogs. He was already over twelve years old when he came to us well over a year ago presenting with what appeared to be an ageing heart. He had had a heart murmur for many years and recently it had become a little worse. He was slowing up and coughing a little and had lost a little of the zest that he had had previously. He was provided with routine therapy to help control a weak and elderly heart and it was hoped and expected that an improvement would occur. He was brought back to the surgery a couple of weeks later no better; in fact his appetite had reduced and he was losing weight and condition. His loving owner wanted us to run diagnostic tests and this is where ‘Kura’s’ journey started. An ECG showed conduction irregularities. Far worse was that blood tests showed that he was going into kidney failure and worse still an echocardiogram (an ultrasound scan of the heart) revealed the deep-seated cause of his problem was pericarditis. Pericarditis is where fluid develops inside the fibrous sac, the pericardium, which surrounds and protects the heart. There can be many reasons for this to occur and most causes have a very poor prognosis. The echocardiogram showed no heart tumour but did indicate heart failure developing.

Isabelle Vets Latest News Isabelle Vets L’Islet surgery since its opening last month has been exceptionally well received by our clients. Everyone comments on the pleasant environment and the improved staffing and the new Siemens C.T scanner and hydrotherapy

The first priority was to stabilise his kidneys which required intravenous drips and medication. He needed an anaesthetic and we had to get him well enough to survive a drain being placed through the pericardium and into the space beside the heart. Vet, David Jeffery, successfully placed the indwelling pericardial catheter into place immediately removing the deleterious pressure on the heart. This procedure has risks in itself as the needle of the catheter is working within millimetres of the heart itself. New drugs were added to improve and strengthen cardiac output and ‘Kura’ suddenly improved and a couple of days later the catheter was removed.

‘Kura’ was weak for many months and his kidney function is very poor, he has had a picky appetite and struggles to maintain his weight. Well over a year has elapsed and his caring owner makes sure that he gets his medication, he enjoys his walks and all of the attention he gets. ‘Kura’ is a true survivor, a real ‘Pet-Hero’, who has battled against all of the odds over many months to have recovered and appears to be thoroughly enjoying his fourteenth year. Age will catch up one day but hopefully not for a long time.

OUR HERO OF THE MONTH IS...

Lucia Pagliarone Words Samata Russell Image Sean Harvey

Our hero this month is someone who devotes her time, energy and love to support people within our society that are struggling with drug addiction. Lucia Pagliarone passionately believes that everyone has something valuable within them, and that everyone deserves friendship, support and a helping hand. ‘I see a lot of people that have had incredibly difficult lives. Their childhoods have been full of abuse and trauma, they’ve been told repeatedly that they are basically scum of the earth and they have started to believe it. Faced with so much pain, often people use drugs to cope with their daily lives, even though this comes with its own list of problems,’ says Lucia. Lucia and her team head up the Guernsey Drugs Strategy Campaign which seeks to decriminalize illegal substances so that people caught with drugs aren’t given a criminal sentence, which effectively cuts them off from many opportunities in life, but are given therapy and treatment instead. ‘What a lot of people don’t realise is the effect the law has on people after they are sentenced. If found in possession of a small amount of cannabis, people are sometimes strip searched and locked in a cell, then taken to trial. After that it’s reported in the newspaper and people often lose their jobs. They can’t open bank accounts and the bank accounts they already have are sometimes shut down,’ says Lucia. After being shunned from society in this manner and with no job prospects, Lucia believes it is extraordinarily difficult for people to pick themselves up and live a life of contribution. She gives up her time to help people in this situation in anyway she can, including to help them re-enter the banking system.

‘You can’t exist nowadays without a bank account; I used to work in banking so I understand how it all works and what questions to ask in order to secure people an account,’ says Lucia. Because of her public campaign, Lucia now receives a lot of phone calls from family members of those struggling with drugs. ‘I get a lot of worried girlfriends and mothers phoning me because they don’t know where else to turn. I go to visit people in hospital, I help manage appointments between individuals and the Oberlands centre and I offer people treatments,’ says Lucia. Lucia is a shamanic reiki healer and offers people struggling with addiction treatments on a donation basis. ‘I don’t like giving free sessions, though I have done that in the past, because I think people need to value the help I’m giving them. The problem with drug addiction is that you can only help the individual as much as they want to help themselves. They need to put some work in and it takes time. Giving up a substance you are addicted to doesn’t happen over night - it’s like dieting, people relapse and then need to get back up and start again. People are often really ashamed of themselves, they don’t think they are worthy of love. We need to help them believe otherwise,’ said Lucia. And Lucia understands this intimately because she was once an addict herself. ‘I suffered a lot of trauma at a young age and I didn’t know how to cope with it. I struggled to trust the services on the island as I was worried they wouldn’t be discreet, so I kept it all inside and masked it with drugs. That was years ago now and

#17. AUGUST 2017. THE FUN ISSUE

I have been able to heal and face some of the things that happened to me. ‘I’m really lucky that I was never given a criminal sentence for possessing drugs in Guernsey and so I was able to work in finance and now I run my own business. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I had been punished by the system, which keeps people stuck. What would actually help people get better is if they were reintegrated into society properly,’ says Lucia. ‘People think that it’s drugs that cause suffering but drugs are just a coping mechanism people use when they can’t face their lives. What’s at the root of the problem and what we need to address is the abuse and pain people carry. This is difficult and takes time. ‘I just want people to be treated as human beings. We all have hearts, we all are someone’s brother, son, daughter, niece or nephew and we all have the potential for good in us. We have to stop punishing and condemning people for taking drugs as it’s just compounding their suffering. We need to start listening and understanding and helping instead,’ says Lucia.

Churches, important buildings, parish fetes and iconic scenery will all feature in the exhibition, which is this year called “Parish Memories”. ‘We are putting together the images at the moment and there are some from the 1860s through to the middle of the 20th century. All of the parishes are represented and we are hoping that we can evoke some memories and create discussion on how the island has changed,’ said acting chief librarian Sue Laker. The building of what is now Blanchelande Park Nursing Home, the guardhouse at Moulin Huet as it once was, the properties lost to the reservoir and the building of the Delancey monument will all feature in the images shown on purpose-built displays on the lawn in front of the library. ‘It’s always an incredibly popular exhibition and last year, attracted 7,000 people including a record month in July when 2,000 visitors came to the library. Having the exhibition in the garden encourages people to come in and see the vast and fascinating collection we have as we always want more people to enjoy the library, so we’re very grateful to Ravenscroft for their continued support.’ The garden exhibition will be complimented by a display of artefacts inside the library which will feature the original 1853 plans for the Market Building, which were recently rediscovered hidden inside two pieces of cardboard. Also included will be some of James Duquemin’s plans including the Vallette Esplanade and Trinity Square, an original watercolour of Castel Church by Joshua Gosselin and a panorama of St Peter Port from 1851.

YOUTH COMMISSION FOR GUERNSEY AND ALDERNEY ANNOUNCES INTERNET SAFETY PARTNERSHIP WITH AIRTEL-VODAFONE The Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney has launched a new partnership with Airtel-Vodafone to provide online safety lessons in schools and training for professionals and parents. The partnership will see the delivery of in-school sessions focusing on the responsible use of technology and online safety to 2,500 11-18 year olds, with each primary school also receiving an annual assembly. The sessions include online safety tips for internet browsing, social networking platforms and online gaming. A large part of the programme will focus on educating young people about how the information they upload can be used and shared without their knowledge. It is hoped that at the end of the sessions, young people will have a better understanding of the potential dangers of being online and how to mitigate them. Kerstin Neason, Youth Commission CEO, said: ‘The potential for the internet to be a valuable and a fun resource for entertainment, making friends, keeping in touch and learning is huge for young people. But young people using the internet need to be aware of online threats - be it bullying, fraud or something more serious. We’re grateful to be working with Airtel-Vodafone and are pleased to be able to draw on their experience and educational resource to spread awareness and build important online safety skills.’ Peter Zunino, head of marketing at AirtelVodafone said: ‘This partnership further cements our long standing commitment to help keep Guernsey children safe online and builds on work we have already done around content filtering and providing access to educational resources such the Vodafone Digital Parenting Guide. We are looking forward to working with the Commission to help offer parents, teachers and children alike with the right technical and practical advice to empower their digital journey

AN INITIATIVE FOR THE MIND The Significance of Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace The Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands has recently pledged its support to Guernsey Mind to the tune of £46,000 which will be used to provide an Employee Wellbeing Service. This comes as Lloyds Bank, the Foundation’s sole sponsor, has committed its community focus for the next two years on mental health and wellbeing. Jill Chadwick talked to the people behind the project and the Foundation’s Executive Director who explain why they want to add their weight to raising awareness of mental health in the workplace and out. The Foundation’s Annual Seminar this year was entitled ‘Helping the Channel Islands Prosper’ and Sir Tony Hawkhead, CEO of Action for Children, talked about the importance of businesses supporting the Third sector and the key role played by employees who drive these partnerships. Jo Le Poidevin, Executive Director of Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands, understands the significance placed on mental health and wellbeing and shares some of what the Foundation does as well as that of the organisation’s sole sponsor, Lloyds Banking Group, to address mental wellbeing in the community. ‘According to a survey undertaken by the NHS one in six adults are affected by poor mental health and, according to Money and Mental Health, around four million will also struggle with their financial wellbeing.’ The Foundation is an independently-run charitable trust funded by the profits of Lloyds Banking Group and operates a range of grant programmes which focus on improving quality of life, creating

equality of opportunity and tackling the disadvantages of those who are marginalised in society. Last year it dedicated 19%, or £128,474, of its total funding to local charities to those that focus on health, including mental health. ‘Our sole sponsor also recognises the importance of addressing mental health. Lloyds Banking Group launched its Helping Britain Prosper Plan in 2014.The Plan was ground breaking and the first of its kind. It set out seven public commitments designed, to address some of the big issues facing Britain today. The Bank colleagues voted overwhelmingly (62%) in October of last year to support mental health as the Group’s new charity theme throughout 2017 and 2018.’ Jo explains: ’Lloyds Banking Group’s network of four independent charitable Foundations, England & Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Channel Islands, together have invested almost £600m into thousands of local charities over the last 30 years. Each Foundation has its own board of trustees and are funded by the profits of Lloyds Banking Group. Improving mental health is an important way for the Foundations to tackle disadvantage at a local level and currently 148 Channel Islands’ charities are receiving funding specifically to support individuals improve their mental health and move on with their lives. A part of that funding figure dedicated to mental health, is the grant awarded to Guernsey Mind for £46,000 to support their Employee Wellbeing Service for the next two years. This programme trains employees and companies on the significance of mental wellbeing and teaches them to recognise common mental health problems, understand how staff might be feeling, and how to support those going through a difficult time.

Jo Cottell

Emily Litten Jo commented, ‘I am delighted that the Foundation is supporting Guernsey Mind’s Employee Wellbeing Service. The programme is integral in tackling stigmas surrounding mental health and it truly supports those in need of assistance. Health and well-being is a priority issue for the Foundation, and the next two years will align with the fundraising and volunteering efforts of bank colleagues - increasing awareness and support to improve the mental wellbeing of employees, customers and the wider community.’ Jo Cottell heads up the Employee Wellbeing Service at Guernsey Mind and says that more and more companies are recognising the benefits of good mental health practices in the workplace and that there are sound business reasons for adopting positive practices. ‘Businesses with strong wellbeing strategies report improved attendance figures, higher morale and reduced staff turnover. We can help businesses take a proactive approach to supporting mental wellbeing by offering a range of consultancy and training services.’ ‘We can offer mental health audits to businesses and then make recommendations about the changes an organisation could think about adopting. These can be anything from staff training or policy development to simple, practical organisational changes.’ ‘We train managers to recognise common mental health problems, understand how staff might be feeling, and how to support those going through a difficult time or who are returning to the workplace, and we also run sessions for staff on mental health awareness and how to look after your own wellbeing. We will shortly be launching a new initiative to provide accredited Mental Health First Aid training too.’ ‘Later this year, we will also be bringing the ‘Mindful Employer’ initiative to Guernsey, which is about increasing awareness of mental health at work, and providing support networks, training and information. One element of the initiative is the ‘Charter for Employers who are Positive about Mental Health’. The Charter contains a set of aspirations about

employing people with mental health issues and signing it shows that the employer is wanting to work towards the standards.’ Employers can contact us about a range of workplace mental health issues – training, advice, mediation, for example. The support from the Lloyds Bank Foundation will help us continue to develop our Employee Wellbeing Service within the Islands. Emily Litten, Executive Director of Guernsey Mind says, ‘Guernsey Mind are delighted to be the recipient of a grant from the Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands.’ ‘The funding provided by the Foundation helps us to employ a member of staff, develop our expertise and provide services for more and more people. Without grants from organisations like the Foundation we would have much reduced activity in the Third Sector as a whole.’ ‘We hope this service will continue to go from strength to strength, and we are very grateful to the Lloyds Bank Foundation for funding a member of staff to deliver this successful initiative.’

THE EMPLOYEE WELLBEING SERVICE was launched in 2012 and since then has trained 1500 people and 45 companies. The statistics speak for themselves, the Guernsey Post saw sickness absence days decrease by 65% the year after working with Guernsey Mind. This saved an estimated £100,000 for the business. Guernsey MIND’s work with HMRC in the UK saw them save half a day for every employee involved; that is 6,750 less sickness absence days in 2014. GOAL50 AND THE CAPE FLATS Words Ellie Cooper For most of us, three hot meals daily and the opportunity to live life without too much consideration of our health, except in a wellbeing sense, is something we take for granted. Britain is used to living with ease, so much so that we barely wear out old clothes before we buy new ones. We eat too much, we throw away too much – in 2015 Britain binned 15 billion pounds worth of food - we have a silly number of electronical devices and on top of those things we are showered with opportunity. Not having the option to go to school is something no local child has ever had to comprehend and – touch wood – is something no local child will ever have to comprehend.

For those born in the Cape Flats of South Africa though, life is not so handily presented on a plate. Crippled by violence, drugs, unemployment, and crime, every sunrise brings with it a new potentially life-threatening challenge. The physical absence of fathers is now considered the most significant family and social problem facing Africa, with many fathers abandoning their role in the home, utterly disconnecting themselves from their families and leaving behind a void in their offspring’s life that is ripe for exploitation.

Those living in the Cape Flats have been greatly helped by Guernsey based charity Goal 50, a charity set up by Nigel Pascoe with the hope of supporting the Great Commission United (GCU), a non-profit making Christian soccer academy set up by Mario Van Niekerk in 2001. On his inspiration for setting up Goal50 Nigel Pascoe says, ‘For a number of years, I had been involved with a football charity which was connected with Plymouth Argyle FC. I was in Cape Town for the World Cup in 2010 and took the opportunity to look at some soccer schools in the Cape Town area. I wanted to see what the infrastructure was like and to see what support was needed for the future. I guess it was a combination of my love of football, my Christian faith and my business background. When I met Mario Van Niekerk, he told me of the dream he had for his soccer school and I thought he deserved help. He was doing the most amazing things in his community in the most difficult of circumstances. My philosophy is to try and make a positive difference in people's lives’.

Ark Drug Rehab. These men were all once addicts, traffickers and gang members. Their lives have been transformed.

Mario Van Niekerk, a former gang leader, turned his life around and took a vow to commit to preventing others from succumbing to the same lifestyle as he once had. Since this turn around he has arranged 50 tutors and coaches to go into schools in Heideveld and work with them to improve participation as well as literacy. Deciding on football as a universal language to gift children with important tools such as integrity, perseverance, creativity and a strong work ethic, Mario, the GCU and Goal50 now reach even further beyond a soccer academy by offering hot food, valuable training in life and work skills and drug rehabilitation services. Feeding programmes across the Cape Flats area of Capetown, in Khayelitsha, Heideveld, Langa, Nyanga, and The Ark have provided 220,000 meals since 2014 and it is anticipated that by 2017 a further 125,000 meals will have been provided. For many families, this is the only hot meal they will receive per week. One hundred and ten heroin addicts are currently going through a biblical rehabilitation programme supported by Goal 50 and a further three hundred and ten men who are Aids or HIV positive, abused or drop-outs find temporary shelter here, too. Goal 50 has made a commitment to provide one meal for these 420 men on a monthly basis. What’s astonishing about this centre is the fact that its record is actually better than any government funded organisation. In November 2014, Goal 50 also purchased a property to be modified as a safe home, a project that will provide training to caregivers, pay for supplies and provide elementary education and life skills. A day centre is also on the agenda, with Goal 50 hoping to utilise land purchasing opportunity in Heideveld to create a centre that will benefit 100 children daily, allowing parents to work whilst their offspring develop and learn in a safe environment. It is hoped this will further reduce the temptation for young people to enter into a gang-led lifestyle by setting them up with priceless attributes for the next stage of life.

SAFFERY CHAMPNESS CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN GUERNSEY Photography John Fitzgerald

Over 75 Saffery Champness partners from its offices across the UK and Europe gathered on the island to help celebrate the firm’s 40th anniversary in Guernsey. Their visit coincided with the firm’s annual partners conference, which this year was hosted by the Guernsey office and welcomed partners from England, Scotland and Switzerland. The visiting partners were joined by the Guernsey office staff at Octopus Bar and Grill for a special drinks reception on Thursday 29 June. One of the visitors was London-based consultant Clive Nicholson who established the Guernsey business in 1977. Since then, the firm has grown remarkably and is now one of the largest independent fiduciary service providers on the island, employing more than 120 people across its trust, funds, tax and accountancy business.

GUERNSEY’S FIRST LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Photography Chris George Thursday 22nd June saw 200 of Guernsey’s top business leaders gather at St Pierre Park to hear five influential speakers share their take on views on leadership. Phil Eyre, the founder of Leaders, organised and hosted the event, inviting Dr Leslie Dickie of Jersey Zoo, Julia and Guy Hands, Matt Bird, author of Relationology and Major General Patrick Marriott to Guernsey.

29

Guy and Julia Hands, both entrepreneurs and business people, shared their personal insights on leadership and making tough decisions in a Q&A session with Phil. Leaders’ associate, Karen Welsby, served under Major General Patrick Marriott’s leadership in Iraq and she felt that lessons from the army on leadership would be valuable to those working in a business environment. The insights he shared from his distinguished career of 35 years in the British Army, along with his humility and humour ensured he was the perfect choice to close the conference. Speaking of the event, Phil Eyre, said: ‘Our ambition is that Guernsey will be recognised as a centre of excellence for leadership and governance. We chose speakers and designed the conference format to stimulate ideas and discussion around what great leadership looks like in practice. Our aim was to help our conference guests to influence and lead their businesses and organisations forward. The conference was a great success, and we have already started planning our next event.’

LIFESTYLE / WELLBEING

There is no better place than in Guernsey when the sun is shining and the beaches are packed with parasols, children playing and people shrieking with laughter; whilst immersing in the cooling and refreshing sea. It’s like a weight has been lifted from everyone’s shoulders, people smile more and generally appear a little lighter and carefree. This is our 6th Year at Yoga Elements where we take our classes outside to various stunning Island locations, experiencing the warm rays on our faces and the grass beneath our feet. It is a special feeling to experience the community coming together, young and old, with a wonderful mix of complete beginners and more experienced students. It doesn’t go unnoticed that each year when we take our practice outside, it all becomes a little more playful. We are all guilty of taking life too seriously. We are a generation who

33

feel the different stresses and strains, keeping up with technology and being exposed to so much more of the world than ever before. It’s not easy to return to that playful, fun inner child we once were. After all we don’t stop playing because we get old, we grow old because we stop playing. Yoga is an incredible tool to allow us to return to our source, to explore our bodies and minds on a much deeper level and altogether a more fulfilling way to carry ourselves through the journey of life. At times, Yoga can be considered a very serious practice, however - we need to remind ourselves to explore and observe all aspects of our practice; including our personality and ingrained habits. Take for example when we allow our breath to deepen, we engage, find our drishti (focused gaze) and attempt to navigate into a tricky balancing pose; yet at times fall off our mats in a spectacular fashion, often rolling over and narrowly avoiding our fellow student to the right of us.

Katie Brock, RYT, RPYT, AYM DIP www.yogaelementsgg.com Facebook, Twitter & Instagram; Yoga Elements Guernsey

Personally, through practice that now invokes inner laughter and lightness and on a deeper level; an acceptance of where I am in that very moment, being ok with the fact that on and off the mat I have experienced many wobbles, falls, and periods of vulnerability, but discovering it is all about reactions; how we get up and dust ourselves off. This in turn encourages us to take this idea/process and apply it to similar situations in the outside world. I had the great pleasure a few years ago of attending a talk with the Dalai Lama, where amongst great wisdom and profound teachings, he spent much of his time full of smiles and laughter. Spirituality does not have to be fundamentally serious. Yoga and its many forms, evokes playfulness. Too often we’re attached to doing the best pose or a new pose. We want something to happen. When it doesn’t, which is inevitable, we are disappointed. Suddenly it all becomes too serious and it is self-inflicted. To be truly free of the outcome is the heart of Yoga. There is going to be an outcome

anyway. We can’t ultimately control it so we should just do our utmost. Stay light but never stop putting in your best effort. Do we have to create the fun or does it arise spontaneously? To be non–attached yet committed can leave you with that feeling of lightness. As a result a joy should arise. It is easy to enjoy, play and have fun with what you’re doing but not at the expense of its integrity. Yoga really is for everyone and if like me, you feel the wobbles of life on and off the mat, Yoga teaches us the tools to become just a little bit lighter and enables us with the all important tool of self compassion. I wish you all the most joyful of summers, feeling lightness within your hearts and minds, on and off your Yoga Mats.

Olivia Cooney of POP-UP FITNESS Words Jessamy Baldwin guernsey girl olivia cooney is taking the international fitness scene by storm – and she’s just getting started. The former London party girl turned personal trainer/entrepreneur has already trained stars such as Katherine Jenkins, the girls from Little Mix, Amy Willerton and Made in Chelsea’s Kimberley Garner. She’s trained Vogue models in Amsterdam and has more recently partnered with Bootea on a summer ‘body plan’ project. With her Pop-Up Fitness company going from strength to strength over the past few years, the sky’s the limit for the 26-year-old from ‘the rock’. After finishing school, Olivia Cooney jumped headfirst into the undeniably cutthroat, arguably glamorous world of PR in London – she was living the high life! Or, so it seemed.

“It was literally my job to take A-list celebrities out to bars, clubs and restaurants - basically to entertain them. One night I had to take Beyonce out, which was pretty amazing. But, after a while I realised it wasn’t the kind of lifestyle I wanted. I wasn’t feeling good in myself, healthy or fulfilled. Something wasn’t sitting right in my gut.”

their absolute limits. Or, they’d go on holiday and indulge, drink champagne, do yoga and relax. I thought: why don’t we combine the two and keep things interesting?

A few days after her lightbulb moment, Olivia quit her job, packed her bags and booked a one-way ticket out of the UK. Everything had changed in her mind.

The bespoke seven-day retreats now take place across the world, in glamorous destinations including Ibiza, South of France, Switzerland and Mauritius. They combine high-intensity, bootcamp style training with pilates, hiking and yoga. Translation: there’s something for everybody! Kettle bells, battle ropes, boxing and TRX and are thrown into the mix to give you a completely varied workout.

“I explored Thailand, India and Bali and soon found myself organising my own mini retreats out there. There was no partying or backpacking for me, instead I spent my time climbing volcanos, working out on beaches and spent three months at a Muay Thai camp. I absolutely fell in love with the feeling of tip top health and fitness. “When I got back to London, I wanted to maintain that sense of energy and fulfilment One day a junk email came through my inbox about studying to be a personal trainer and something inside me just clicked. I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life.”

“I really wanted to give people a luxury experience, where they could feel like a celebrity for a week.”

Pop-up fashion stalls, live DJ’s for the workouts and top-notch ‘clean’ dining are also part of the experience. The retreats also include complimentary injury prevention, physiotherapy and relaxation massages. “The retreats have a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere where my guests receive personal attention and gentle encouragement, rather than drill-sergeant discipline,” she says.

Sports have always been an integral part of the now-fitnessguru’s life however – a passion she fostered at The Ladies’ College in Guernsey and later at Millfield School in Somerset.

“Our desire is for all of our clients, male and female, of all ages attending, to leave feeling fantastic and not feeling beaten up as if they have been at an army style boot camp. The decision of how much you participate in is completely up to you.”

“I was never academic at school but I was good at athletics and netball. I used to play tennis for Guernsey with Heather Watson who is still a very close friend of mine.”

Above all, Olivia says “fitness shouldn’t be too serious”.

Digging out her old contact book, Olivia started to pitch personal training sessions to former PR clients and they went for it without hesitation. “I trained Katherine Jenkins and Kimberley Garner in the early days, which was a great launch pad for me.”

Our motto is “work hard and reward well”.

“I then found the property we host the retreats at in Ibiza by chance on a family holiday. At that point I had been a person trainer for three years and was ready to take my career a step further. The villa has tennis courts, an astro-turf football pitch attached to it, it’s surrounded by beautiful hills, it’s a couple of minutes walk to the beach and has enough room to sleep 18 people comfortably.

“Pop-Up Fitness is definitely not about enforcing a military style of fitness or all about weight loss or anything like that. More than anything, I want to make people enjoy working out and incorporate health and fitness in a way that is unique and exciting.

She says she gets “a real kick out of helping people achieve their

“I think fitness needs to be fun because if you’re not enjoying it, you’re not going to stick at it and that’s no use to anybody.”

“I thought to myself: “This is how celebrities live; workouts on the football pitch in the morning, a chef to cook whatever you like, great running and hiking paths along the coast lines and the freedom and choice to reward yourself with a luxury lounger at an exclusive beach club”. Instantly I knew that this was the lifestyle I wanted to make accessible for everyone. Fabulous fitness, beautiful clean food combined with ultimate luxury for one week.”

“There are so many different types of workouts out there – so you will find something you enjoy. For me, I love boxing the most because my mind feels constantly engaged, meaning I don't get distracted. I'm improving a skill rather than slogging it just for the calories. You also can't beat a good playlist to bring up the mood, so invest in some time with Spotify and watch yourself go from 0-60.”

When Olivia had the idea for Pop-Up, she quickly realised there wasn’t anything similar in the health and fitness market.

Fitness today is more of a lifestyle, she adds. “We all want to look and feel our best and it’s about giving time to yourself too. I tell my clients to set dates with themselves. So Thursday we will do ‘X workout’ and it’s going to be about making you feel good.”

I ask her the main thing she’s learnt from launching her own company and changing career paths. Her answer? “Stop procrastinating!” “Everyone is far too serious about starting a business. I never had a solid business plan or brand to begin with. I had an idea and a passion for what I wanted to achieve and I just went with it. Honestly, if you have an idea for something, just to do it. Things will fall into place along the way but if you spend too much time planning, you’ll never get started because it will all just seem too big and scary.” Olivia now lives in Amsterdam with her Dutch fiancé Bart Van Maanen – who also helps run Pop-Up alongside his modelling career. “Amsterdam is my new favourite place in the world, alongside Bali. But Guernsey is up there too! “I love Guernsey so much and I always will. I try to go back every August and at Christmas. It’s such an amazing place and I’ve still got lots of friends who live there. I’d love to bring a Pop-Up event

to Guernsey one day. I think there is definitely room for more fitness related events, bootcamps and concepts in Guernsey.” Her daily routine is pretty hectic, but she seems to love it. “My routine will vary according to how early my first client is, but on a typical day my alarm will go off at 5am so I am up and ready for my first client at 6am. I then have my cup of tea and listen to my latest motivational tune. I’m loving ‘All night’ by Chance The Rapper (feat. Knox Fortune) at the moment. By 8am she will have made breakfast and “enough green juice to last anybody else a week”. The rest of the day is spent working on her business, responding to emails, doing interviews and going to meetings. She’ll also fit in at least three more clients across the day – each with a bespoke fitness plan. “I have to be on top of all of it,” she says. And at just 26, with a thriving business to her name, Olivia seems to be doing just that!

GET TO KNOW OLIVIA describe your perfect day off No morning alarm, lazy breakfasts, a boat trip on the Amsterdam canals and going out for dinner with my new fiancé! There would definitely be a workout in there but finished off with a glass of champagne.

ADAM LE GALLEZ

SELF TAUGHT ANIMATOR AND VIDEO MAKER Words PAUL CHAPMAN If you’re a user of social media, there’s a fair chance you’ll have come across a video of a group of friends having fun in the sun in Guernsey last summer. Featuring lots of slow motion, sunsets, sea and beach action, not to mention the novel use of a digger, it has been viewed over 93,000 times on Facebook alone, and you would be forgiven for thinking that Visit Guernsey had commissioned a production company to make it. (In case you haven’t seen it, search Facebook or YouTube for ‘summer 2016 Guernsey under the sun’.) In fact, it was made by 20-year-old Adam Le Gallez, a self-taught animator and video maker. Adam made a similar movie in 2015 and there is one in the pipeline for 2017, although this nearly didn’t happen: “I was on the fence about doing one this year because I didn’t want to overdo it,

and just make people think that I’m doing it just get all these views [on Facebook, YouTube etc.]. But I have jumped on with doing it now.” Despite having made two of these movies before, this latest production is not without its issues, as Adam explains: “This year’s kind of slipped away a bit. It’s already July, and I was looking at my phone about where we were last year, we’d done so much, but we haven’t really done much this year.” One of the reasons for this is Adam’s expanding career as an animator taking up most of his time: “I don’t really know how it picked up, but it’s got to the point where I don’t really need to chase for [work], it just comes through in my email and stuff.” A lot of the jobs come via YouTube, where users ask Adam to create intros for their channels, for example. But he’s also produced animations for BBC, Sky Sports’ Soccer AM and he’s just finished a job for Comedy Central UK. And all of this without actively marketing himself: “It’s kind of word of mouth, the way other people come to me. A new job will come and say ‘I saw this thing you did for this person’, and they kind of pile up on top of each other.”

Impressive stuff, especially when you consider, as mentioned earlier, that Adam is selftaught. After a mate showed Adam how to make stop-motion animations with Lego in year 4, which he posted on YouTube, and having always been able to draw, Adam thought “why can’t I do this with my drawings?” After doing a bit of research, he was given s o m e animation software o n e Christmas, which he had to figure out how to use: “I just looked it all up on YouTube really. There are a few little videos, and once you get to grips with a few of the tools, you can find a way of doing it...I started playing around with that, and I made up my own sort of style.”

Adam clearly enjoys making movies and animations, but which does he prefer? “They both have their ups and downs. “I really like doing the summer one, because obviously filming that is a load of fun and it’s just an easier job. Animation takes a lot longer, but I’ve got to a point with the animating...I’ve got my own way of doing it, where I can just zone out a bit, which is quite cool.” A lot of the footage Adam uses in his summer movies is shot on his phone. “I find it easier. The whole idea of it is to just catch everything naturally. If we’re down on the beach I’m always going to have my phone on me so I can just film people as they go...And it’s good enough quality.” Adam records quite a lot; for example, he has just been on holiday to Kos where he “filmed loads, it’s just finding the time to sit down and actually edit it together.” He also films on Snapchat regularly: “It’s quite good to do that, I get to see my day again, don’t let it slip away.” So what does the future hold for Adam and his animation and movie making? “It would be nice to move somewhere where there’s a bit more opportunity with it. Maybe go over somewhere and have a little bit of work in an office with another animation team or something.” He continues: “[America] is the dream...LA for the entertainment industry generally is the place to go. There’s some big competition though. But I’ve got quite a big portfolio now...there’s nothing holding me back really.

STILLS FROM THE GUERNSEY SUMMER VIDEOS

Whatever Adam decides to do, he is in the fortunate position of forging a career out of something he loves: “It’s just a natural thing to do now. I’m very lucky.” As well as being lucky, he’s also talented and creative, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he produces next.

THE DRONE RANGER : A high flying entrepreneur Aerial photography is nothing new, but there’s no doubt that the advent of drones has, quite literally, taken it to a whole new level, bringing about one of the most exciting developments in photography in recent years.

the UK, who said that it was absolutely outstanding.” Dave adds, “Working with Elliott is a breath of fresh air, he’s creative, efficient and very enthusiastic, we both get genuinely excited about the projects we work on together.”

The Drone Ranger is a local aerial photography and video company offering clients unexpected, eye-grabbing imagery of everything from private properties and commercial premises to topof-the-range cars, weddings and more.

Le Mont Saint is just one example of a local business reaping the benefits of affordable aerial photography now, but what does the future hold for the drone industry?

The Drone Ranger started out as a parttime project for 18 year old Elliott Cockett, while he was finishing his A Levels at Elizabeth College. However, the demand for the service grew so rapidly that now, with his exams behind him, he has launched The Drone Ranger full time. “It was my interest in photography that got me into drones - I loved the idea of giving a different perspective to projects” says Elliott, “However, the commercial potential was always at the back of my mind and I wanted to evolve it into a business. I also knew by then that the mainstream route of finishing school and going to university just wasn’t for me, so I had a real incentive to make it work.” And that’s just what he’s done. With clients that already include Estate Agents, Builders, Ad Agencies and Motor Dealerships. Dave Beausire of Le Mont Saint Garage has used Elliott for numerous shoots and explains what drone videos have brought to their marketing. “Cars are obviously designed to be driven and whilst static shots show detail and styling, they can’t give an idea of what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat. The drone videos add that sense of movement and of speed, taking it to a whole new dimension.” The recent shoot for the new Alfa Romeo Giulia is a great example of this. Filmed on the runway at Guernsey Airport, it clocked up over 38,500 views within just 48 hours and Dave is keen to give credit to The Drone Ranger for his input. “What’s great about Elliott is that he doesn’t just take the shots, he also comes up with the ideas. He suggested this car needed something special and that it was a shame we couldn’t use the runway. Can’t we? I thought, made a few calls, and thanks to the cooperation from the airport, we made it happen. We sent the finished video to the Alpha Romeo Sales Director in

“Working with Elliott is a breath of fresh air, he’s creative,

Dave Beausire - Managing Director, Le Mont Saint Garage

Despite his relatively young age, Elliott is well aware that his is a competitive and fast evolving industry and that he needs to work hard to stay ahead. He acknowledges that as drone technology becomes increasingly inexpensive, it will enable a larger number of people to access it but he is confident that there will be an ongoing market for his skills. “You can compare it to standard photography,” he says “Everyone can take a picture on their phone, but are they good enough to represent your company or for your wedding photos? The technology alone isn’t enough, there’s as much work goes in to preparation and post production, using test runs to get a feel for the terrain, storyboarding and setting the scene, then editing using graphics and music to add emotion that draws people in.” Plus, anyone operating a drone commercially must be fully CAA certified and insured. Drone operation is a tightly regulated industry and Guernsey is no exception, we even have geo-fencing at our airport and prison. The Drone Ranger is of course fully certified and stays up to date on both regulatory and technological developments. He says, “I’m already looking at new markets. The kind of footage a drone could capture from sports, particularly winter sports, would be incredible. I’ve invested in hand-held gimbal tech which means I can seamlessly transition from aerial to ground level and then interior shots and I’m also looking at 3D-mapping, which has huge potential.” Business analysts would seem to be in agreement with Elliott’s thinking, predicting that aerial photography will be worth £1.7 billion by 2022. The public is interested, the technology continues to evolve, and artists like The Drone Ranger are ready to inspire. Drone photography is here to stay.

Nicaragua, home to beautiful beaches, volcanoes, lakes, world class surfing and colonial cities. It seems like every country I visit, I’m suggesting there is something here for everyone , but Central America is just so versatile in what it offers that it is generally always true. I began my Nicaraguan journey in Leon, a city full of culture and history. The colonial splendour of Leon is unparalleled by any other city here and offers a beautiful mix of crumbling 300 year old houses alongside revolutionary murals and sights of historic interest. The beautifully restored Cathedral de Leon stands proud in the main plaza, the hustle and bustle of the city sending flocks of pigeons fluttering to its bell tower. From the rooftop, the view of the city and surrounding volcanoes is magnificent and well worth climbing the precarious staircase to get there. In comparison, Granada’s elegant streets have a less hectic approach and drip with photogenic elegance. The exception only being the markets which play by their own rules and are an assault on the senses. The strong smell of fruit, vegetables, cheese and everything else on sale along with the confined passages and loudly yelling vendors will leave you feeling frazzled, but the treasures inside are well worth the adventure. This is where my love of bartering came in to play and finding a good bargain on food for dinner became an exciting challenge for the day. Escaping the eventful markets, the streets of Granada are a photographers dream. With colourful doorways and beautifully restored colonial mansions hiding secluded courtyards, it’s no wonder why Granada attracts and houses a diverse community.

Away from the cities and historic towns, a whole new adventure can be found. Ometepe Island, home to the famously known volcanoes Maderas and Conception and situated in Lago de Nicaragua, it has quickly become a unique and must see destination. With the local charm of any ‘off the beaten track’ location, Ometepe shows you the culture of Nicaragua in its finest form. A drive around the island on a moped allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery, but make sure to watch out for the local residents idling along the badly paved roads. Pigs, cows, horses, chickens and all other manner of wildlife who call Ometepe home, have all have adapted the local mentality of taking life slowly and are certainly never in a hurry to get anywhere. Driving past colourful houses and locals waving happily, waterfalls to visit and volcanoes to climb, it really is a far cry from the busy town and cities you’ll see on your journey to get there but certainly one that’s unforgettable. Popoyo and the pacific coast, home to one of the most storied waves in Nicaragua and a stunning backdrop. This is where you’ll find surfers galore, flocking to the shores in search of big waves and beautiful beaches. Magnific Rock is famed for its dramatic beauty and its beach break, a rock formation dividing the beaches and setting up a perfect wave along with the most wonderful spot to enjoy the Pacific coast sunsets. Further down the coast positioned right in the middle of Popoyo and San Juan Del Sur is Gigante, a little beach town that stole my heart. A small dirt road will lead you here and take you through the lazy little local fishing village, to the end of the beach and to what I called home for 6 weeks, El Camino Hostel. My intention for my time here was solely Spanish school but it became so much more. Volunteering at a hostel, I began to know the locals and astounded at the breath taking sunsets every evening, convincing myself I’d stay ‘just one more day’. It’s a common phrase in Gigante and one I’ve heard a lot from long and short term travellers alike. From early morning fishing trips with the locals to learning to slackline and attempting to learn how to surf, it was a perfect end to a perfect trip in the beautiful country of Nicaragua.

A TWO WEEK TRIP THROUGH THE CANADIAN ROCKIES FROM CALGARY TO VANCOUVER

#17. AUGUST 2017. THE FUN ISSUE

LIFESTYLE / TRAVEL

Last Summer I spent 7 weeks travelling around the US visiting a lot of the main cities and national parks around the country. Some of the people I met on this trip had been to Canada before and I’d heard so much about the beautiful country that I HAD to book a trip for this summer. I’ve just come back from my Canadian adventure around the Rockies for 2 weeks and I really couldn’t recommend visiting the West Coast of Canada more - it’s such a diverse and incredible part of the country. Canada is the only place I’ve ever visited that I’ve experienced all four seasons in about an hour! On our journey up the Lake Agnes Tea House Hike to get a view of the famous Lake Louise we experienced rain, wind, scorching sun and then snow all within the hour and a half it took for us to reach the top! It’s fair to say that weather in the Rockies is very unpredictable. The trip started in the city of Calgary and ended in the city of Vancouver. I travelled to Canada on my own and met a group of strangers (who now I can call my friends) and we travelled around in a mini bus with our G Adventures guide Braden and camped together for 2 weeks. Our first stop on the tour after Calgary was Banff. In winter, Banff is a buzzing ski town, but in summer it has a completely different look, as do most of the towns through the Rockies. We did our first hike in Banff, an easy one to ease into the hiking which took just under an

51

hour, where we were graced with a beautiful birds eye view on the town below. Our next stop on the trip was to Lake Louise, where we experienced all types of weather and got to the top of the mountain only to be in a cloud of snow and have a hindered sight of the (what was meant to be) beautiful view of the lake below. After the stunning views that Banff and Lake Louise had to offer, we headed on a 10 hour drive through one of the World’s most scenic drives, Icefields Parkway. This is a long drive you would dread to sleep on! We made numerous stops on this drive through the mountains, which thankfully kept us awake. We came across the bluest lake I’ve ever encountered and it was stunning. Peyto Lake has this incredible bright blue colour, much like other lakes in the rockies such as Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, which comes from something called ‘rock flour’. This incredible colour only appears in the summer months as the lakes usually freeze over in the winter and turn white. Another stop along this beautiful drive was to The Athabasca Glacier, unfortunately, we didn’t get to walk on the glacier itself but we got pretty close to feel how cold it would have been! One of the biggest highlights of this drive, for me, was seeing 4 bears. When I was in america for 7 whole weeks I only saw one bear and it was so far away it honestly could have been anything! I was absolutely over the moon when we came across all these bears in a single drive. We were lucky enough to come across two grizzlies (which were much smaller than I had first imagined!) and two black bears. I was determined to see a Moose on this trip, however, apparently it’s very rare and, unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky enough this time. Finishing the scenic Icefields Parkway drive, we arrived in Jasper (another ski town). We had a lot of free time in Jasper so spent the day exploring the mountain town and most of us did our laundry as it was the only chance, and most of us were running out of socks by this point! Our most challenging hike

52

of the trip came next, Sulphur Skyline. We were told this hike was usually done in around 4-5 hours up and down, which had us feeling very nervous! However, we were all at the peak in an hour and a half and were rewarded with amazing panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscapes, overall, up and down it only took us two and a half hours, which we were all impressed by. Luckily we all got to reward ourselves with a soak in some hot springs at the bottom of the mountain! The next two days were probably the most relaxed on the trip. On our drive to the next spot, we made a quick stop to visit the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies - Mount Robson, which was more than impressive! We spent 2 days camping on a ranch in the middle of nowhere in Wells Gray Provincial Park. With nothing much to do around this area, we spent a day relaxing and playing drinking games (and getting to know each other very well!). The next day consisted of some extremely hungover canoeing which proved much more difficult than we had first imagined as we were against the wind the majority of the time - not ideal! Our next stop was definitely my favourite, Whistler! This is a huge ski town/resort in B.C. and there is so much to do in winter and summer, you would never get bored! We had a free day to do whatever we wanted so my friend and I decided to go quad biking in the morning which took us to the top of cougar mountain with some great views of the surrounding areas. It was a two seater and we took turns driving and, surprisingly, I only managed to crash into one tree stump! In the afternoon we rented bikes and cycled around a few of the stunning lakes. I could have spent so much longer in Whislter and will definitely be returning! The final destinations were Vancouver Island and then on to Vancouver City. We spent 3 days in Vancouver Island. We started in Tofino which is the Rockies' surf town - it was strange going from mountains to the sea, but a great change of cold to warm! On the 1st July, we were in Victoria (the capital of B.C.) and were so fortunate to be there on Canada Day! Everyone was so patriotic and the atmosphere was incredible. Unfortunately, this meant we weren’t able to see much of what the city would normally have to offer, but regardless it was a great day and night. Vancouver City, the final stop and my ticket home. Again, I wish I had had more time to explore this City! It has so much to offer from beach days to mountain hikes and with Vancouver Island being a short boat ride away and Whistler being an hours drive away - Vancouver is probably the most ideal City in Canada with regards to never getting bored! At the time, the two weeks felt like they went on forever but now I’m home it just feels like it’s flown by and I would do anything to go back! SURE BIG GIG WEEKEND IN JERSEY

ONE OF THE BIGGEST music events of the year in the Channel Islands has just taken place and a number of stars appeared at the Sure Big Gig Weekend in Jersey. The stage at Howard Davis Park has graced many superstars over the years, but this year we had many artists that included Holly Johnson, Kim Wilde, Go West and not forgetting Louisa Johnson. The weekend finished with the very talented Olly Murs who entertained the crowd with some great music. Fortunately the weather we have enjoyed on both islands for most of this summer continued and we had a dry and warm couple of days.

Anyone who has helped organise anything will know just how much hard work goes into putting on an event like this anywhere and logistically bringing artists to the island can be hard work and stressful, but the rewards are there too and I believe over 9000 people enjoyed the event over the two nights. Apart from having fun, an essential part of island life, money was raised for a number of worthwhile charities. It will take a little while to recover from this years event and I am sure before we know it, it will be time to start planning for next year.

August The 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a Paris car crash is set to be marked by a 90-minute documentary pulling together the recollections and emotions of those involved. We hear from relatives, reporters, close friends and political figures, many of whom have never spoken publicly about the Princess’s tragic death. Other networks have already had their chance pursuing the Diana narrative, but this promises interviews with the two people most affected: Prince William and Prince Harry.

The Big Family Cooking Showdown (BBC Two)

August or September Foodies islandwide can rejoice! As a replacement to the much loved Great British Bake Off (which has moved to Channel 4 – let’s not go there…), the BBC has found its understudy, and it' s set to draw in big viewing numbers. Nadiya Hussain (former Bake Off winner) and Zoë Ball take on the Mel and Sue role, meeting 16 foodie families around the UK – and Giorgio Locatelli and Rosemary Shrager are the new Paul and Mary. Challenges will be set in both the studio kitchen and home kitchens up and down the country during each hour-long show, whittling down the teams of cooks through a series of challenges. It has a lot to live up to, but I’ve got high hopes.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2 - 26 August Taking place each August (since 1947) in Scotland’s vibrant capital city, the Fringe Festival sees established and new artists come together for three weeks of glorious, thought provoking and impressive summer performances. Whether you’re into theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, opera, music, events, exhibition or food market stalls – you won’t be disappointed.

summer markets and concerts

August HOME: There is so much going on right on our doorstep in Guernsey this summer and it’s worth checking out long standing events too. If you haven’t visited the farmer and fisherman’s market in Sausmarez Manor (every Saturday from 9am-12noon), it’s totally worth a peruse. As the longest established market in Guernsey, it sees several stalls selling freshly-harvested vegetables and fruit, homemade jams, chutneys, vegetarian delicacies, locally-grown plants, recycled reconditioned tools and garden implements. Beef, Sark lamb, homemade pies, cakes, desserts and pastries, locally-caught fresh fish, crabs and lobsters are also up for the taking (and tasting). You can also buy local Guernsey made gifts and mementos for friends and family. Also make time for the Saturday concerts in market square and Sunday concerts in Candie Gardens this month (they both run through September as well). #17. AUGUST 2017. FUN ISSUE #17. AUGUST 2017. AUTUMN / WINTER 2017

BEAUTY TRENDS

Photo credit: Antonio Marras AW17, Byblos Milano AW17, Max Mara AW17, Chalayan AW17 and MAC Cosmetics

The fashion pack are already thinking about the upcoming new season so stay ahead by updating your makeup bag now for Autumn Winter 2017 with our round up of the key trends.

THE EYES

HAVE IT In the same way that a certain body part- be it the waist, shoulders or legs- may be the focus of the season for fashion designers, makeup artists often choose to draw attention to a particular area of the face. For Autumn Winter 2017, it’s the turn of the eyes as cosmetics see a return to big, bold eye makeup after a couple of minimalist seasons. Eyeshadow makes a comeback and the “windows to the soul” are framed and enhanced with bold black eyeliner and ‘60’s inspired doll-like lashes that would make Twiggy proud, as seen on the catwalks of Prada, Versace and Chanel.

For fluttering, feminine lashes, apply lashings of mascara such as YSL Beauty Baby Doll Mascara (£25.50). For a wallet friendly alternative, check out Bourjois Volume Reveal Mascara (£9.99)- we love that the packaging incorporates a mirror for on-thego application- or try the latest launch from The Body Shop with their new Lash Hero Fibre Extension Mascara (£12), which is available in three shades.

When it comes to eyeliner, the classic feline flick has been reimagined. The focus remains on sharpness but it’s been updated with a slashed blunt line, crisp graphic shape or decorative aerodynamic details. We’ve been impressed with Too Faced Sketch Marker in Charcoal Black (£17) or for a budget option, try Soap & Glory Supercat Carbon Black Extreme Eyeliner Pen (£6.50) which boasts impressively intense pigmentation.

Recreate the look at home using the must-have palette of the season, Urban Decay Naked HEAT (£39.50). Described as “scorched neutrals”, the palette contains twelve warmtoned powder eyeshadows which provide an exciting update on the classic nude tones we’ve become accustomed to seeing over the last few years. Urban Decay are arguably the leaders of the pack when it comes to eyeshadow palettes and the latest launch doesn’t disappoint- prepare to see similar versions of it replicated everywhere!

LIFESTYLE / BEAUTY

IN THE

PINK Rosy hues are the order of the day for Autumn Winter 2017, adding a warmth to looks as the temperature drops. The spectrum ranges from ethereal washes of pink to striking crimson. This look isn’t about classic red lips though. It has been reimagined in a fresh, modern way via sheer coverage, soft shades and a delicate application, or alternatively, worn in an expressive yet imperfect manner. Makeup Artist, Val Garland explains, “It’s never a “lipstick”; it’s about using eyeshadow blending brushes to blur the edges rather than lip brushes to draw on a perfect shape. It should feel sexy yet irreverent… a rebellious red”. The look was spotted on the catwalks of Sophia Webster, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Giambattista Valli, to name just a few.

The colour shouldn’t be solely resigned to lips. Francesca Neill, COLLECTION Cosmetics Ambassador and Celebrity Makeup Artist says, “people are afraid to experiment with pink eyeshadow tones but in fact, these colours are the most universally flattering.” Try it for yourself using Collection Eyes Uncovered Matt Nude Rose palette (£3.99). It’s the brand’s first completely matte eyeshadow edit and comprises easy-to-wear neutral tones of pink. We love that the price tag is so affordable, making it the ideal way to try out the trend without an expensive commitment.

59

We also like the new NYX Professional Makeup Faux Black Eyeliners (£5.50) which provide a twist on the classic black liner. Available in eight, blackened shades, each with a matte finish, the liners can be applied as a smooth, precise line or smudged for a smokey effect. Look out for the shades Oxblood or Burnt Sienna for a wearable way to try wearing the trend. For a celestial glow, look no further than Topshop Beauty Chameleon Highlighter in Sea Witch (£12.50). This multi-tonal, pastel pink-lilac hued illuminator can be applied to eyes, cheeks and collarbones to embellish skin with a reflective, out of this world glow.

The easiest way to wear the trend is by updating your lipstick wardrobe. We’ve been impressed with Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick (£17.50). Try the matte finish for effortless cool girl appeal- we recommend the shade Bing, a pillar-box red, or Talk To Me, a hot pink which lets your lips do the talking.

HEALTHY

GIRL SKIN

The healthy living trend is reflected in the makeup looks of the season with “healthy girl skin” making an appearance on countless catwalks including Lanvin and Missoni. It’s all about a healthy, nourished “glow from within” and flushed cheeks, as MAC Makeup Artist Mark Carrasquillo explains, “I’m thinking of fresh-faced girls who go trekking through the Himalayas… a flushed cheek from hiking and being out in the weather- it’s touchable makeup, it lives”. Makeup Artist Hannah Murray agrees, stating, “It’s a fresh and polished effect, finished so that you’re not entirely sure if it is or isn’t makeup that has created it.”

Recreate the look at home using MAC Next To Nothing Face Colour (£27), a hydrating tinted cream to enhance skin’s luminosity. Alternatively, try the latest launch from Charlotte Tilbury: Unisex Healthy Glow (£35). This tinted moisturiser adapts to skin’s natural tone, instantly adding a “lit from within” glow that’s like your skin, only better. For a wallet friendly alternative, check out Rimmel #InstaFlawless (£6.99), a tinted moisturiser which (as the name suggests) adds an Instagram-worthy dewy, fresh finish to skin. To add a natural, radiant flush, look no further than Clarins Blush Prodige in Golden Pink (£27), a limited edition silky blush in a skin flattering shade from the brand’s Autumn 2017 makeup collection.

Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.

LOCAL HOUSING REPORT Another month has passed and the great beach-going weather continues. With the weather being more of the same, it's fair to say it's also more of the same with the conveyancing transactions completed at the Greffe in June. We are really pleased to see a continuation of last month's theme of the Open Market starting to fight back. There were 8 arm's length open market freehold transactions in June and no doubt some share transfers as well.

Paul Nettleship, Partner Paul is a partner in the Guernsey property team. He advises on all aspects of commercial and residential property including acquisition and disposal of real estate, advising on secured lending, commercial freehold and leasehold matters, planning matters, property disputes, inheritance advice and will drafting. Paul regularly acts for both landlords and tenants on leasehold matters and high net worth individuals who move to the Island.

This brings the year to date total to 19, compared with 10 this time last year – practically double. We also are aware that there are other deals on the cards for completion over the summer which is great news. Whilst that’s good progress, even more needs to be done to show Guernsey is open for business and that re-locators are welcomed with open arms (as Locate Guernsey are doing well).

Whether you are looking to invest in residential property, purchasing your first home or developing a commercial project, Collas Crill works close collaboration with clients, advisers and other legal professionals to ensure every deal and transaction is managed to successful completion. Our property specialists have the local knowledge and expertise to offer top quality advice on all commercial and residential transactions at every stage of the process.

The States of Guernsey needs to demonstrate at every touch point a government easy to work with and keen to facilitate a smooth relocation from wherever in the world. What can we do to best demonstrate Guernsey's outstanding qualities? What incentives can we offer? Views and scenery are, unfortunately, not enough. On the combined open and local market side, June saw a grand total of 130 transactions completing worth a combined value of £43 million, bringing the year total to a whopping 684 transactions worth over £200 million – figures we have not seen so high since 2013 when the transaction value was as high but, as one would expect, the number of transactions was lower at 626. On the bonds front, June boasted 92 bonds of which we estimate that 56 related specifically to property purchases whilst the rest were more than likely refinancing where possibly some people have decided to stay put and either extend their home or simply obtain better finance packages. This brings the year total to 476 bonds worth a total of £172 million – compared with 482 worth £151 million this time last year. Let's hope this trend in transaction numbers continues but, more importantly, let's hope that real progress in the next quarter can be made with helping people get on to the property ladder. #17. Light up your life with effective lighting in your home Words Polly Tapper

Light and bright is clearly the way we now want to live. More of us are opting for design in our homes that maximises the use of open space and glass and allows light to flow unhindered into living areas. With this objective in mind, lighting design has become centre-stage and a lighting budget is a must for any new renovation project or build. Just like you wouldn't start colouring in without having an outline first, lighting for your home should be considered during initial planning stages. Before you get started, you need to understand the sources and direction of any natural light. For example, a room that is lit by from the south could enjoy warm and bright light all day, whereas light sources from other directions may be patchy and require enhancement with electrically sourced light. The next step according to Katie Le Tissier, Interior Designer and Showroom Manager at Acorn Interiors, is to consider that “you will need two types of lighting, ambient and task.” Task lighting comes first and is the practical kind of lighting. The use of the room will dictate the requirements. For example, in your living room you may need lighting for reading or in a kitchen, this is the lighting needed for cooking. After planning for your task lighting, you can then start to play with ambient lighting. Ambient lighting helps to reveal the texture and depth of the room and to play up any architectural features or special objects. This is where art meets science and a designer will use the tools of different lighting technology working with ceiling, floor and wall lighting and plug-in lamps to balance light, shadow and reflection. The scattergun approach of installing downlights has been surpassed by a more sophisticated approach where the lighting source is either hidden, or itself a feature and different sources of light combine to create an overall vision. Katie adds, “layering of light is vital to be able to create an interesting and dynamic space, while still being able to change the mood easily”.

To create a visual point in the room, keep in mind that our eyes will be drawn to the brightest part of a room. So if you're already working with an existing lighting scheme, Katie suggests that layering is the most effective way to improve an area’s lighting and create a more inviting space. She also advises that pendants can be a great way to break up a space and also act as a decorative feature. Another critical element of lighting is control. This covers everything from where you place the switches, which lights you can subdue with dimmers and also any technology platform you use to control your lighting and other aspects of your home’s environment. As Katie explains, “you want to be able to change the mood at a flick of a switch from a vibrant living space to a romantic dinner setting.” So if you're interested in upgrading a space in your home or if you're starting from scratch with a new build, consider putting aside some budget for lighting. Acorn Interiors offer a design service and can provide a full lighting plan, or help you choose an appropriate fixture for an existing space. They stock some of the leading British pendant lighting designers, including Tom Raffield and Tom Dixon. Similar in first name and their shared love of the pendant-style light only, Tom Dixon favours metallic and bold shapes for his pendant designs. He also plays with organic shapes and reflection. On the other hand, Tom Raffield works with steam bent sustainable wood, which is woven into intricate, and generous natural shapes through which the light escapes, creating its own patterns of shadow and light. They also stock TALA, an LED bulb design company, with environmental ethics at its core - not only did they craft their beautiful bulbs to be energy efficient and to fit a variety of fittings, so that you can replace traditional bulbs to lessen your energy consumption by up to 90%, they also plant 10 trees for every 200 units sold.

THE RISE IN THE COWORKING MOVEMENT Words Lara Todd

The way that we work is changing. The coworking movement is on the rise globally and is causing many to re-think how the environment they’re in can help encourage productivity. It’s a trend that has spread far and wide. In London, Madrid and São Paulo, Google have a coworking space called Campus. Closer to home there is The Hub in Jersey and it has arrived in Guernsey with the Digital Greenhouse. The growth in coworking is partly due to globalisation, companies are no longer based in one central office and instead employees are spread worldwide, while still being able to communicate thanks to increasingly sophisticated technology. Workers are no longer choosing to sit in noisy coffee shops and are instead favouring more work orientated locations. The coworking movement is becoming more popular with an ever growing number of freelancers which the industry body IPSE estimate generate £109 billion a year. While it is common for freelancers to work from home, the perks of joining a coworking space are endless. Here are 6 benefits that stand out...

NETWORKING

Most people that use coworking spaces are freelancers or small business owners who would not have the chance to meet people if they were based at home, even just working a few hours a week at a coworking space will allow you to meet so many new people!

COST

For new businesses or freelancers, finding a suitable office space to rent can really break the bank. Most coworking spaces are extremely affordable and you won’t have to worry about additional costs like heating and electricity.

FLEXIBILITY

Lots of coworking spaces will have extended access so you can work at a time that suits you best with no repercussions if you need to be at home to let the boiler man in or feed the goldfish. It also works well if you are away for meetings and need somewhere to work from that’s not a hotel room or noisy cafe!

PROMOTION

Coworking spaces will normally have lots of members who are potential new clients or business contacts and they will aim to link members up where suitable. They will also list you on their website and help promote events and products.

#17. AUGUST 2017. THE FUN ISSUE

PRODUCTIVITY

Working from home means pets and children running around, or possibly a lack of motivation and switching the TV on! If you work in a coworking space you won’t have any of those distractions and will be in an environment that helps to inspire creativity. Officevibe report that 60% of users are more relaxed at home since coworking provides a work/ life divide.

COMMUNITY

Become part of a community. A lot of coworking spaces will have events for members to help connect members, this community atmosphere is something that the type of people using coworking spaces may not otherwise have and is a great way to be involved with people from all sorts of backgrounds and experience. If joining a coworking space is something you would benefit from then take a look at our website: digitalgreenhouse.gg or call us on 701010.

NEW STREET MANAGEMENT LIMITED ACQUIRES LIBERATION MANAGEMENT LIMITED Independent trust and corporate fiduciary service provider New Street Management Limited has acquired Liberation Management Limited in Guernsey. The acquisition, which has received regulatory consent from the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, will see Liberation’s Guernsey-based employees remain with the business and join the New Street Management team in their Les Echelons offices, whilst Bruce Currie will join the board at New Street Management.

RAY & SCOTT LTD, GUERNSEY HAVE WON A COVETED UK JEWELLERY AWARD

The results of the UK Jewellery Awards 2017 were revealed on 29th June at the London Hilton, Park Lane, where the jewellery industry elite came together for a night of recognition and celebration of the sector’s achievements. Ray & Scott Ltd, Guernsey have won Watch Retailer of the Year and were praised by Retail Jewellers expert judging panel for their enthusiasm, professionalism and continuing to evolve in a very competitive market. The store on the Bridge, St Sampsons were mystery shopped by the judging panel and scored impressively for the ways in which they market, present and sell watches. The UK Jewellery Awards are the most admired and relevant awards in the jewellery and retail industry. The awards provide industry recognition. Martin Search, Managing Director, Ray & Scott Ltd, Guernsey said: “The 25th anniversary edition of the industry’s leading awards event, has been nothing short of phenomenal. A fantastic accolade to win Watch Retailer of the Year! My team and I are extremely grateful to our loyal customers, friends, colleagues and, more importantly, the industry”.

New Street Management, an ownermanaged business, has grown steadily since its launch in 2014. This acquisition will increase its total number of employees to 30 and will consolidate the company’s fiduciary services offering which includes the establishment, ongoing management and administration of companies, trusts, foundations and family office services. Liberation Management is an independent fiduciary group with offices in Guernsey, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The Luxembourg and Dutch offices will continue as separate entities and will be unaffected by the New Street Management acquisition. Simon Graham, Managing Director of New Street Management, commented: ‘This transaction is an important step forward in our company’s exciting evolution. Our previous year-on-year growth has been organic but we are confident that the combined business will benefit from the synergies on offer between ourselves and Liberation Management and we firmly believe that this acquisition will benefit our clients and staff. ‘Growth is necessary to meet the challenges of servicing our clients’ complex structures throughout Europe, the Middle East, South America and the Far East, as well as being able to meet the increased regulatory and reporting requirements that face the financial services sector.’ David Rowlinson, Managing Director of Liberation Management, commented: ‘We started discussions with New Street Management earlier this year and it quickly became apparent that both sides felt this would be an excellent match. We are delighted that our staff and the management team will continue to work with our existing clients as part of the New Street Management team.’

OVER 75 SAFFERY CHAMPNESS PARTNERS TRAVEL TO GUERNSEY FOR 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Over 75 Saffery Champness partners, from offices in the UK and Europe, gathered in Guernsey last week to celebrate the firm’s 40th anniversary. Their visit coincided with the firm’s annual partners conference hosted by the Guernsey office which welcomed partners from England, Scotland and Switzerland. One of the visitors was London-based consultant Clive Nicholson who established the Guernsey business in 1977. Since then the firm has grown remarkably and is now one of the largest independent fiduciary service providers on the island, employing more than 120 people across its trust, funds, tax and accountancy business. During the visit the partners were joined by the Guernsey staff at Octopus Bar and Grill for a drinks reception before heading off to a private dinner. On the final night the partners enjoyed a special 40th anniversary party celebrating Guernsey traditions. The event featured a traditional Guernsey country fayre with crown and anchor games, wild flowers by The Little Torteval Flower Company, mobile bar service by Aperitif and Haut Maison, and performances from local musician Josh Brown and Guernsey band ‘City Limits’. Saffery Champness managing director Nick Batiste said: “The firm has come a long way since 1977 and we are proud of our well established roots within Guernsey’s financial services industry. It was an honour to be joined by all the firm’s partners on this special occasion. “Meeting partners regularly is really important for our Guernsey management team to not only discuss our objectives but how we can continue to build on our success and achieve further growth.”

MOURANT OZANNES ADVISES AIM AND TSXV LISTED MARIANA RESOURCES LIMITED ON £166.9M TAKEOVER Mourant Ozannes has advised longstanding AIM and TSXV listed client, Mariana Resources Limited (Mariana), on its takeover by Sandstorm Gold Limited (Sandstorm) via a Guernsey scheme of arrangement. Mariana is an exploration and development company with a portfolio of gold, silver and copper projects in Turkey, South America and Côte d'Ivoire. Sandstorm is a gold streaming and royalty company, headquartered in Canada. The transaction values Mariana at £166.9M and the offer price under the Scheme (being a combination of cash and Sandstorm shares) represented a premium of approximately 84.4% to the closing price of 59.5 pence per Mariana share on AIM on 25 April 2017 (being the last business day before the announcement of the takeover transaction). The Scheme will result in Mariana shareholders owning approximately 18.3% of the enlarged Sandstorm group. The boards have stated that they believe the combination will create a leading mid-tier streaming and royalty company. Mariana CEO Glen Parsons commented:

"We believe the transition for the Hot Maden high grade Gold-Copper project to Sandstorm, being the main reason for the combination, will continue to add significant value for shareholders and we thank Mourant Ozannes and the team for their considerable effort in getting this transaction completed in a very efficient manner". Mourant Ozannes Partner and Advocate Helen Wyatt led the team advising Mariana, assisted by corporate Counsel Alex Davies, with fellow Partner and Advocate Abel Lyall assisted by litigation Counsel Jamie Bookless. Mariana is also advised by Jan Mellmann and Jenny Hodges of Watson Farley & Williams LLP in London. Helen said: "We have acted for Mariana since incorporation and are proud to have worked alongside the board, and onshore counsel Watson, Farley & Williams, for the past 10 years. Our team has built a strong reputation for cross-jurisdictional mergers and acquisitions transactions, and it's a great result for all involved when shareholders are able to realise value while remaining invested in the company they have helped to build." This transaction follows closely on the heels of Mourant Ozannes' successful opposition to the sanction of an oppressive scheme of arrangement in the Guernsey Court of Appeal which, coupled with other successful public and private takeovers in the past few years, firmly establishes Mourant Ozannes as the leading legal advisor in Guernsey for high-level friendly and hostile mergers & acquisitions transactions.

YOUNG PEOPLE TURN TRASH INTO TREASURE WITH THE YOUTH COMMISSION AND PRAXISIFM Young people in Guernsey can learn how to turn trash into treasure during creative workshops organised by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney and sponsored by PraxisIFM.

#17. AUGUST 2017. THE FUN ISSUE

87

The workshops, which will be delivered in 16 sessions by trained youth workers at the Youth Commission’s youth centres, focus on reusing waste to create new, practical items. PraxisIFM is funding the scheme which will give young people the opportunity to develop an understanding of environmental issues in a hands on and engaging way using the reduce, reuse and recycle model. PraxisIFM Trust Director, Jeff WilkesGreen said: “It is great that we are able to support these important workshops for young people to help teach them a range of new skills in a fun and inventive way. “Hopefully these sessions will increase awareness of the importance of recycling with the young people taking part and help them to identify when waste can be re-used and give them the creative tools to make it into new and exciting items.” 26 young people took part in a workshop on Friday 16 June at the Youth Commission youth centre at Les Ozouets Campus. During the session young people learned how to turn used milk cartons into wallets and purses and old vinyl into working graffiti clocks. All the products used in the workshops are sourced locally. The CEO of the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, Kerstin Neason, said: “These workshops will give young islanders the chance to exercise their creativity to benefit the environment which is fantastic and they would not be possible without funding from PraxisIFM, so we are extremely grateful for the company’s support.” The Youth Commission launched the ‘Trash to Treasure’ recycled arts initiative at the Arts Seafront Sunday on 4 June when more than 200 young people took part in the free workshop. As with all Youth Commission youth centre activities, young people can take part in the sessions for free at the Youth Commission’s six youth centres around the island from 23 June (activity dates may vary across centres). The youth centre timetable is available here: http:// www.youthcommission.gg/copy-of-youthcentres-and-clubs

Hopefully the guys and girls who work for us would say exciting and rewarding. At Sarnia we pride ourselves in our staff and make sure they all understand how important they are to the company. Sarnia has given me great opportunities over the 8 years I have owned the company and I can count my work colleagues as personal friends outside of work which is something I am proud to say.

Guernsey is a competitive market in which to attract and retain staff so we can never be complacent. We’re a (very) socially active team and as the hours we work are not your normal 9-5, flexibility has to be there when someone needs personal time to run errands or that important haircut during the working day. We support staff in their hobbies out of the office and actively encourage our staff to pursue a healthy lifestyle away from the office.

What do you as a company stand for?

What was your best personal mistake?

It’s all in the name, we’re Sarnia Estate Agents and we work hard for local people to find the home of their dreams or property to rent. We may not be the flashiest, oldest or have the biggest building but we’re the best at getting your property sold or let.

Any mistake you can learn from has to be seen as a good mistake in my eyes, I was always told to take ownership of your mistakes, learn from them and make sure you don’t repeat them.

How does your company contribute to island life?

As an island what should we do more of?

We have always championed local charities and support them in any way we can. For a relatively small company we have raised almost £500,000 for local charities through our Property Lotteries. For the past 4 years I have been the Chairman of The Lords Taverners raising funds for disabled and disadvantaged children of the bailiwick which has been a really rewarding role and something I am very proud of. We actively support the local schools with their works experience programs and our door is always open for advice when it comes to all things property.

Encourage new business and welcome new people with open arms. There seems to be a resistance to change on the island and I think we should be more open minded and forward thinking. What makes you love Guernsey? Where do I start?? It has to be one of the best places to live. When you take a minute and step back from the stresses of day to day life you start to appreciate just what a little gem Guernsey is and what it has to offer. To sum it up, Guernsey is a beautiful and safe island with a strong community spirit.

Invest with Sam Content is King All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, or so the saying goes. The proverb, made famous by the infamous 1980s horror movie The Shining, suggests that a life without time devoted to enjoying activities outside of work can quickly become rather boring. This is a concept that I am sure most of you would agree with! Whilst there are a whole host of industries people turn to for their leisure requirements, one of the most lucrative is the video game market. In 2016, global gaming revenues came in just shy of the $100 billion mark with 2.2 billion active gamers (according to data provider Newzoo). Avid gamers will know there is significant rivalry between the main console producers – each keen to maintain their position as the most technologically advanced system. However, from an investment perspective, it may surprise you to learn that we are somewhat indifferent when it comes to debating the merits of the hardware specifications adopted by competing platforms. There are generally two reasons for this. The first is that the console platform market now accounts for a significantly smaller percentage of global gaming revenues that it has done historically. The advent of smartphones combined with innovation such as augmented reality (Pokémon Go anyone?) means that this is now the most popular medium for gamers; at least in terms of the contribution to total revenues. This is a trend that looks highly likely to continue, with the latest predictions indicating that 50% of global revenues will come from the sale of smartphone or tablet games by 2020. The second reason, which is very much linked to the first, is that you can have the most technologically advanced console in the world but without the plethora of games to accompany the hardware, at best, all you have is an overpriced DVD player (and let’s

SAM CORBET, Ravenscroft Investment Management be honest, it’s unlikely to be long before they also go the way of the dodo and then you really are left with nothing). If superior graphics processing capability was the defining criteria for successful consoles then the widespread adoption of smartphones as a platform for gaming is unlikely to have taken off. This is a concept that Japanese video game maker Nintendo appear to have grasped. Despite generally being perceived as the underdog among the big 3, none of the other players come close to matching Nintendo’s vast array of intellectual property. When it comes to content, Nintendo, alongside its arsenal of loveable misfits, is undoubtedly king. Ignoring the sense of nostalgia I feel, when reminiscing on the time spent playing Nintendo N64 classics (Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Snowboard Kids and the Ocarina of Time), the popularity of this console, even today, serves as a testament to the overarching importance of producing quality content – which in Nintendo’s case is its library of unique games and world famous characters. In essence, Nintendo essentially becomes platform agnostic and this is a prime example of how the Company is able to remain relevant long after the hardware (that its rivals continually obsess over) becomes redundant. As the shift towards mobile based platforms continues, this should position Nintendo favourably against its less content-affluent competitors. As investors, this ability to adapt to the changing environment and ultimately, survive the test of time, is one of the main reasons we like Nintendo as a prospective investment. Owners of both our Huntress Global Balanced and Huntress Global Growth funds have exposure to the Company through their underling holdings in Lindsell Train’s Global Equity Fund and, in a smaller quantity, through Polar Capital’s Global Technology Fund.

In 2016, global gaming revenues came in just shy of the $100 billion mark with 2.2 billion active gamers (according to data provider Newzoo). For anybody who is keen to witness Nintendo’s brilliant content in action, we welcome everyone to join us in the Market Square on the 8th and 9th September, where we will be co-hosting an event, alongside our friends at Just Games, in support of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation. Not only will you be contributing to an excellent cause, but there will also be a highly sought after Nintendo Switch up for grabs! Many of you will know that the latest console from Nintendo is almost as elusive as the golden bunny which periodically frequents the basement in Mario 64! More details will be announced in the coming weeks and we look forward to seeing everybody there.

THREE AT SAFFERY CHAMPNESS NAMED AS CITYWEALTH FUTURE LEADERS Three employees of Saffery Champness Registered Fiduciaries in Guernsey and Switzerland have been listed in the 2017 Citywealth Future Leaders 100. The list is the publication’s third annual compilation of rising stars under the age of 40 in the global private wealth industry. Greta Allman and Nick Ford are both senior trust managers in the Saffery Champness Guernsey office while Paul Tucknott is the managing director in the Swiss office. They are three of the 20 listed in the trustees category and all three were also included in the 2016 list. Ms Allman was recently promoted to the role of senior trust manager after joining the firm in 2013 as trust manager of a specialist Middle East family office team. A source commented on her ‘professionalism’ and commended her ‘highly proactive, thought-led, high quality and efficient service’. With more than 17 years’ experience in the fiduciary sector, Mr Ford has worked his way through the ranks at Saffery Champness from trainee trust administer to senior trust manager. He manages one of the firm’s five fiduciary teams and sits on the business development committee. ‘Nick’s recent promotion is a reflection of his professional ability and involvement in the future development of the firm,’ said a source. After a short period in a private bank trust company, Mr Tucknott

returned to Saffery Champness’ Geneva office in 2012, joining the company’s Swiss Board soon after, and was recently promoted to the role of managing director of the business in Switzerland. He has overseen significant growth of the Geneva office which is one of the largest independent fiduciary businesses in the jurisdiction. Those listed were selected after extensive editorial research and following recommendations from industry peers, charities and ultra high net worth clients. The list recognises the study and commitment that has enabled them to advance in the industry. Saffery Champness Registered Fiduciaries, which employs more than 120 staff in Guernsey and 20 in Geneva, is one of the largest independent providers of fiduciary services on Guernsey and this year celebrates its 40th anniversary in the island. Saffery Champness managing director Nick Batiste said: “We have a strong culture of developing the people in our business to enable them to achieve their full potential. CLAIRE HOLLIDAY APPOINTED AS A DIRECTOR AT MARTEL MAIDES Martel Maides, one of the island’s oldest-established and best known estate agencies, has appointed property negotiator Claire Holliday as a Director. A born and bred islander with experience of working in the UK, Claire has fulfilled several roles within the agency and her promotion is part of Martel Maides’ continued development. Her appointment cements her long working relationship with Martel Maides which began when she joined as a receptionist nearly 20 years ago and then progressed through various departments within the agency. ‘Claire has superb people skills and has handled several roles within the 18-strong team, most recently as an open market consultant. We are delighted to have her on the board. Her depth of experience and wholehearted enthusiasm for helping people when they are buying or selling are just part of what make her a real asset to our business,’ said Staff Director Richard Fox. As she takes up her place on the board, Claire can draw on insight gained from time spent on local market sales, lettings, management procedures and the open market. ‘I have always respected the professionalism of the Martel Maides’ brand and how the company positions itself in the market, calmly and objectively helping people with the big milestones in their lives – whether it be finding a new home, selling their existing one, or perhaps advising on an investment purchase for someone’s pension,’ said Claire. With the sun shining and moisture gleaming off the swelling apples GSYLife visited the home of Guernsey cider, Roquette HQ in the Fauxquets Valley. What a gorgeous place to work! James Mellor runs the business, “We started planting trees in 1998 and now have 5,500 specialist cider varieties. The production areas have grown massively over the years. First we were fermenting in 200 litre tanks then 5,000 litre and now 20,000 litre and we have capacity to hold at total of 200,000 litres.” That’s a lot of cider. Quieter at this time of year, there’s much more to come later not just for the team but islanders to be part of their famous ‘Apple Swap’, “The harvest time, mid-September to mid-November, is a very exciting time as the yard is bursting with apples and the sweet smell of juice and fermentations fills the air. This year we are hoping for a bumper harvest of our own and we also process up to 15 tons of apples, which we receive on our apple swap Saturdays from the public of Guernsey.”
