Thousands have lived without love, not one without water. — W. H. Auden

Home is where the Water is... Words Jessamy Baldwin
My skin’s hot with the afternoon sun’s rays, I’m gazing out at the Les Hanois Lighthouse across a millpondlike stretch of sea from L’Eree beach and my toes are cool with the lapping tide. I’ve popped back to the Rock for the weekend and I’m feeling refreshed, present and content. Cue sigh. Water has always been a sanctuary for me – lakes, rivers, the sea, a hot bath, a deep swimming pool; it’s where I’m happiest and feel most… me. And I’m not alone. It’s human nature to seek out large expanses of water. It’s not surprising though, given that for millions of years, humans and our ancestors before us have needed water to survive - or at least benefited from its presence. While so many of us bang on about our love for all-things-aqua, there’s a perfectly plausible and scientific explanation behind our attraction. I hate to burst your bubble, but let’s take the plunge! Neuroscientist Michael Crawford of the University of North London argues that once humans separated from apes and left the forests of Africa, they stayed close to rivers and beaches where they began to eat fish and seafood. He claims the increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids helped to promote brain growth, and that humans’ intelligence increased significantly after we sought out water. There’s no denying that water draws us in and fascinates us. In fact, I don’t think I could live anywhere there wasn’t a river, lake or the sea nearby. Without any of the above, I feel quite claustrophobic in fact. Thankfully however, water is the most omnipresent substance on Earth and, along with air, it’s the primary ingredient for supporting life as we know it. There are approximately 332.5 million cubic miles of water on Earth—96% of it salt water. What’s more, water covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and 95% percent of those waters are yet to be fully explored by mankind. Maps of the world’s population show that the majority of us today live close to water – 80% to be precise. Whether it’s on the edges of lakes, alongside the ocean, near to rivers, next to streams or on islands - we gravitate towards H2O. Over half a billion people owe their livelihoods directly to water, and two-thirds of the global economy is derived from activities that involve water in some form. Moreover,
approximately one billion people worldwide rely primarily on water-based sources for protein. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleansing, working, exercise and travel. According to The Cambridge Water Company, the average person in the UK uses 150 gallons of water every single day. Around 45 litres is used in just a five minute shower! Our intrinsic relationship with water goes far deeper than economics, food or proximity mind you. Our ancient ancestors came out of the water and evolved from swimming to crawling to walking. Human foetuses still have “gill-slit” structures in their early stages of development, and we spend our first nine months of life immersed in the “watery” environment of our mother’s womb. When we’re born, our bodies are approximately 78% water. As we age, that number drops to below 60% — but the brain continues to be made of 75% percent water. The human body as a whole has almost the same density as water, which enables us to float. In its mineral composition, the water in our cells is comparable to that of the sea. Science writer Loren Eiseley describes human beings as: “A way that water has of going about, beyond the reach of rivers.” We are inspired by water. Hearing it, seeing it, smelling it in the air, playing in it, walking next to it, painting it, surfing, swimming or fishing in it, writing about it, reading about it, photographing it and creating lasting memories along its edge. Water drives many of our decisions and desires. From the seafood we eat, times spent with friends and family, our most romantic moments, where we live, the activities or sports we enjoy and the ways in which we travel or relax. Archaeologist Brian Fagan says: “Water is something that humanity has cherished since the beginning of history and it means something different to everyone.” We all have our own unique relationship and set of memories with water. It’s where we came from originally and it’s where we naturally flock to recharge, rehydrate and reconnect. Marine biologist Wallace J Nicholas states: “We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what’s broken,” To the beach?

Meet Odo
UPFRONT / PET HERO

Odo is a much-loved tortoise. She is about 55 years old, and has been with her current owners for the last eighteen years. She lives outside with a nesting box on the patio, and roams the garden where she feeds on leaves and flowers that she finds there. At the end of May her owners noticed that something was wrong… Odo had gone off her food, she seemed unsettled, and was scraping her bottom shell on the garden patio. She was also digging holes in the garden, and when her owner went to find her, Odo just looked at her in such a way that her owner knew that there was something wrong. And her owner had a pretty good idea what the problem might be as Odo has done this before – she thought Odo was egg-bound.

care for your pets and we can undertake many procedures on the premises as well.
Tortoises are fascinating pets, and can stay with you for a long time – Isabelle Vets have a few tortoises registered with them that are over a hundred years old! Female tortoises may try to breed and produce eggs even when there is not a male tortoise with them. After shedding the eggs from the ovary, if the eggs are not laid they can build up in the oviduct (a structure like a womb); this may be due to an obstruction (for example a bladder stone), misshapen eggs or pelvis, a lack of a nesting site or low calcium levels (the most likely cause in this case). The tortoise is then said to be egg bound. In Odo’s case, medical management worked well, but if this does not work, then surgery is indicated. This involves cutting through the underneath shell or plastron, but there are risks associated
The site is also home for the state of the art, ‘Computed Tomography (C.T.) unit’ which is linked to a specialist imaging centre in the UK to provide rapid and accurate diagnosis of many conditions that more routine procedures would find hard to diagnose. But what was she searching for? - the owners put the eggs that she had passed in the hole, Odo felt them there and it seems that she was then satisfied that all was well, as she has not been back to the hole since. Odo is our Pet Hero for this month because she patiently allowed us to examine her and inject her without retreating into her shell and refusing to come out!

OUR HERO OF THE MONTH IS...
GUERNSEY'S FIRE AND RESCUE Words Samata Russell Image Lauren Hunt
Firefighters are perhaps the most classic heroes of all time; running through smoke into the heart of danger when the rest of us are running away. Their bravery and willingness to put themselves at risk to save others is a beautiful thing to behold. I was lucky enough to spend a morning with Green Watch of the Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service. Lead by Watch Commander Matthew Roger, the tightly knit team of 12 work a shift system with three other watches coded by colour - red, white, and blue. The guys live in a permanent state of active readiness. They train hard to be physically fit and are always scoping out potential hazards across our public places, such as the airport, the harbour, the hospital, schools and restaurants. ‘We have to be ready to go at a moment’s notice and we have to be intimately aware of the protocols around different places where a fire might be. We spend time staying on top of all our equipment and do regular drills so each member of the team knows exactly what to do before something actually happens. We do regular assessments of key public places; it can be mentally challenging to routinely keep all that information top of mind, especially when thankfully emergencies don’t happen that often,’ says Matthew. The team invite me to take part in a drill to explore a simulated burning building. I don heavy boots and flame retardant gear, a helmet and breathing apparatus before following Oliver Patch and Kerrin Batiste into the room, which billows with smoke. It’s pitch black and I am immediately disoriented and honestly a little bit frightened. I can feel the strength and surety of the two men beside me though as they guide
me to move across the room, feeling for burned out or unstable flooring as we go. We crouch to talk, where the smoke is the thinnest and the visibility best. There is a casualty dummy at the back of the building. Kerrin has the most air left so he is assigned the heavy job of carrying the dummy back to the warm fresh air outside. Adrenaline pumps through my veins even on a simulated event. The energy of the team is high. Each guy knows his role and performs it with a calm but heightened efficiency. I can feel how close these guys are and how they need to be. Teamwork is essential here. This is life or death. ‘We need to know our men well. We need to know when someone is tiring, or when they need to step back. Firefighting can be highly stressful and it is important that we control the situation to limit and prioritise, what we call our ‘spans of control’, to achieve the most efficient critical decision making performance. People are terrified and shouting at you while you have to be on top of radio communication, checking out where flames appear to be escaping a building and how that will affect the guys inside. We all have our limits and so we need to be aware of when someone is reaching theirs,’ says Matthew. The psychology of the team and the way they interact is at the forefront of the Watch Commander’s mind. ‘We’re like a second family. We spend so much time together and we need to know each other really well. I don’t have time for people falling out so we do competitions and fun drills - that usually sorts people out,’ says Matthew. The watch’s remit is surprisingly broad. It’s not just fires but car crashes, chemical incidents, babies stuck in cars, advising on fire regulations for building projects
#16. JULY 2017. THE AQUA ISSUE
and other community projects, including the latest partnership with St Johns Ambulance Service. ‘We are working on a new initiative so every time someone on the island has a cardiac arrest we are alerted and immediately head there alongside the ambulance. Sometimes we arrive first and that quicker response time can make a big difference,’ says Matthew. The fire service have a skill that the ambulance teams can use . They are strong and so can perform heart compressions over long periods - an activity that can be physically demanding - and help carry stretchers into the ambulance. ‘When people tire the compressions can become shallower and evidence shows that it’s important to keep them strong. We can relieve paramedics who can then focus on airways and other more technical aspects. We can also turn the ambulance around for a faster getaway and help carry the casualties out of high rise or awkward buildings, says Matthew. With the physical demands of the job in addition to the grueling shift system, I am told that being a firefighter is more of a challenge for someone past 50. Crew commander Bernard Nicolle is retiring at the end of June , at age 51. He says that to be a firefighter you need certain qualities. ‘You need to be efficient, physically fit, able to work in a team and comfortable with autocratic ways of working. There is no time to step outside protocol in an emergency. Ex service men are often very good firefighters,’ says Bernard. At every moment of every day there is a team of men whose sole purpose is to ready themselves to protect and save you. For me that is a beautiful and comforting thought.

The couple had spent time on the ward with their daughter and established the charity as a thank you and to improve the environment for other families in the future. ‘As many families will know, the care given by the doctors and nurses on Frossard Ward is incredible. After being on the ward with our daughter, we realised that there was a real need for an investment in the facilities which would make a huge difference to families, often at a very difficult and stressful time,’ said Mrs Gallienne. ‘The garden could be a valuable space for both youngsters and their families but it is just a patch of grass at the moment and can’t be used by anyone. We want to transform it into an area where children can play and relax, and where parents can get some fresh air and have a few moments
to themselves.’ Since it was established, Friends of Frossard Ward has transformed the play room, created a dedicated parents room, purchased new fold out beds for parents so they can sleep in the same room as their children and paid for a simulation doll. ‘Improving the facilities on the ward had to be a priority but we always had the garden in our plans as having a dedicated outdoor space will make such a difference to both the youngsters and their families,’ said Mrs Gallienne. The plans include play equipment for younger children and a seating area for teenagers and parents and will cost around £35,000. Credit Suisse has chosen Friends of Frossard Children’s Ward as its charity of the year and all the money it raises will be used for the new garden. ‘Friends of Frossard Children’s Ward is a wonderful charity and there was overwhelming support from Credit Suisse’s 200 staff when it was chosen as our charity of the year. We have had a number of fundraisers already and are in the final stages of planning our main challenge,’ said managing director of Credit Suisse Private Bank Paul Annegarn. Managing director of Credit Suisse Trust Christoph Walker added that it was a charity close to many of the team. ‘Credit Suisse has been part of island life for 30 years and so many of our team have experienced the fantastic care given by the staff on Frossard Ward. Knowing that our efforts will help make things a little easier for patients and their families in the future is a big incentive to raise as much as we can,’ he said. Ward matron Julieann Wilkes said they would be asking patients to be involved in the final design. ‘It’s an abandoned area but one which can provide a valuable space for our patients and their families. The Friends of Frossard Children’s Ward have done so much for us and we will never be able to thank them for the improvements they have made. I can’t wait for the garden to be finished,’ she said.
BUY A BULB WHEN YOU DO YOUR SHOPPING the Channel Islands Co-operative Society is hoping to raise thousands of pounds towards this year’s Christmas Lights Appeal. The Society is launching a Buy A Bulb campaign in all of its Guernsey stores from Monday. It has been timed to follow on from an islandwide letterbox appeal from Guernsey Post, which has so far raised just over £19,000, bringing the current total raised to £34,200. Shoppers will be asked to buy a bulb and will receive a pin badge to recognise their donation. Tanya Dorrity, community officer for The Channel Islands Cooperative Society, said she hoped that enough money could be raised to keep St Peter Port shining this Christmas. ‘We are delighted to have collaborated on this community project with both Guernsey Post Office and the St Peter Port Christmas Lights Appeal. The Christmas lights give so many islanders a huge amount of enjoyment at Christmas time and it’s hard to imagine what Town would look like without them. As a community retailer, we wanted to play our part by offering the St Peter Port Christmas Lights Appeal a platform where the money needed can be raised,’ she said. ‘Every day across our stores, we see thousands of shoppers and so hopefully when they come in for their weekly shop, to fill up their cars with fuel or just pop in for a litre of milk, they will make a donation and help ensure the future of the Christmas lights.’ The appeal aims to raise money to improve the infrastructure of the lights and provide new displays for Church Square, Market Square, Smith Street, Fountain Street, the High Street and Le Pollet. A minimum of £39,000 a year is needed for the basic management, storage and upkeep. But to extend and enhance the display, around £45,000 is needed. Jax Robin, chair of the St Peter Port Christmas Lights charity, said she had been overwhelmed by the community support. ‘We are so heartened that The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has recognised our need for community fundraising this year and given every customer the opportunity to donate and help us to ensure that St Peter Port sparkles at Christmas this year. Of course, the more money we can raise this year, the smaller the challenge next year and so we won’t stop our efforts once we have enough for 2017 as we want Christmas lights in Town every year.’ More information on other fundraising events can be found at www. christmaslights.gg where donations can also be made online.

Waitrose adds 23 new sandwiches and salads to its Good to Go range. To keep midday mealtimes interesting, Waitrose has introduced 23 new products to its Good to Go range, including chia seed flatbreads, gorgeous grain salads and sandwich thins under 300 calories. Almost half of the range is vegetarian, featuring a meat-free take on a New York deli favourite.
Waitrose studied emerging food trends to create the new Good to Go products. Alongside American and Mexican, there are nods to Greek cuisine with ingredients such as broad beans, dill, capers and olives. A lot of attention has been paid to diversifying the breads used in the sandwiches too - such as bloomers, rye, thins and open flatbread. For those looking to keep calories in check, Waitrose has added three sandwich thins, all under 300 calories. Varieties include Egg and Smoked Ham Thin, Cheese Ploughman’s Thin and Roast Chicken Salad Thin. Grains are hugely popular right now so feature in many of the supermarket’s new salads. Go ‘al desko’ with the King Prawn and Black Quinoa Salad. Black rice and black quinoa create a striking colour base when you add king prawns and finish with a mango and miso dressing. Also new to the range is the Avocado, Feta and Rice Salad.
“Eating well is important to shoppers, who are looking for fresh, nutritious and beautiful foods with lots of colour. So, wherever possible, we’ve tried to make your sandwich one of your five a day. We’re using chia seeds in our wraps and grains in our open sandwiches. And with an increasing demand for meat-free options, we’ve reached the point now where almost half our range is suitable for vegetarians.” - Simona Cohen-Vida, Waitrose Product Developer

The Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation Words Karen New, Trustee Our Guernsey Charitable Trust was formed on the 25th November 2011 and was launched in memory of the late Ray Lowe, with a main focus of providing financial and other support to young Guernsey people participating in sport. Allied to that objective, is an aim to help youngsters to develop not only their talent, but their positivity, self confidence and ability to act as part of a team. Since our Foundation was launched we have supported a number of individual young sports people who may not otherwise have been able to pursue their sporting ambitions. In 2016 alone we supported sports people and teams to the value of £23,000, and together with our commitments already made till the end of 2017, our funding has exceeded £130,000. Over the past 12 months the Foundation has been able to help fund these worthwhile causes, which includes, but is not limited to: Guernsey Football Association - Female Football Development Officer - Joelle Pengelley We are coming to our third and final year supporting a Female Football Development Officer who continues to make tremendous strides in attracting more young players to the game. Joelle continues to work with schools and local community groups to increase the number of opportunities available for women and girls to take part in football. The Trustees are continually impressed with Joelle’s enthusiasm towards engaging more young girls into the sport. We were also pleased to hear that the girls she is inspiring in Schools will be eligible to represent Guernsey in the Island Games when it returns to the island in 2021 and fielding a team of girls to enter the competition is her long term target going forward. Guernsey Rugby Academy - We continue to support the Academy as they aim to engage more boys and girls in Rugby here in the Bailiwick.
The Trustees were pleased to see the Colts U18’s squad pick up the Beau Sejour Trophy at the 2016 Sports Commission Sporting Achievement Awards in January for their U18’s continued outstanding performance. Oscar Webber also won a trophy to celebrate his outstanding achievement as a para-sport athlete with a learning impairment, which reinforced to us that the Academy are putting our funds to good use ensuring that it benefits those who need it most. Guernsey Velo Club - Last year we provided them with funds to allow them to purchase a few sets of race wheels for young up and coming riders to benefit from the use of them in local and offisland competitions. Guernsey Tigers Bowls Club - We have supported the travel costs of the U18 team who travelled to Scotland in April 2016 to compete in the Tri Nations. Guernsey Swimming Club - Laura Le Cras - Now part of the British Performance Pathway, breaking personal bests and setting island records, she is definitely one to watch for the future. We have supported Laura by subsidising the travel costs she incurred by representing Guernsey in a national competition. Judo - Lewis Bourgaize - We enabled him to attend training camps with the English National Squad training days. We followed his progress whilst he was at the championships on Twitter. Alderney Boxing Club - We subsidised the travel costs involved in sending a number of junior boxers off island to attend competitions and coaching sessions here in Guernsey. Guernsey Secondary Schools Football Association - We have recently agreed to support their team travelling to the Gothia Cup by subsidising the cost of travelling to Sweden for the competition. The Secretary of their Association assures us, from that as previous

MUG SUMMER RACE SERIES Photography Pierre Bisson / gsyphoto.com Saturday 20th May saw the first ever paddle sports race in Guernsey, as the MUG Summer SUP Series began. The Guernsey Paddle Club teamed up with Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) to bring paddle sports racing to the island this summer and help spread the sun awareness message. Michael Richards, a MUG council member, said: ‘MUG has always been a forward-thinking charity, and when the opportunity arose to sponsor a racing
series for paddle sports including SUP, one of the fastest growing sports in the world, we jumped at the chance. It’s the ideal platform for us to raise awareness of male cancers and the important summer-time, ‘cream up before it shows up’ message. The MUG Summer SUP Series will run from May to September, with one race held each month. MUG were lucky that the Guernsey weather played ball for their first race, as the sun was shining and the beautiful clear blue Pembroke waters were calm, perfect conditions for the 14 competitors to take on the short technical course. The races are open to everyone with the results being split into three age categories, adults, masters and veterans, as well as board type. Men had to complete three laps of the course and women two. The first over the finish line made great time, completing the course in just over half an hour. Michael Richards of MUG, had a dramatic paddle and sprint finish going head to head with another competitor, Steve Sharman, with their times differing by only 67 milliseconds. #16. JULY 2017. STEP GUERNSEY SUMMER SOCIAL
Every year our members’ events grow in popularity. Our primary objective is to provide education and training to fiduciaries, but we believe that social networking events are an essential component in keeping the sector fresh, engaged and energised. We create go-to events in the Guernsey finance industry calendar with our relaxed but professional approach.
Photography STEP Guernsey Social Event SubCommittee
We organised this social evening in a sophisticated and sought-after venue to enable our guests to network in a relaxed manner whilst finding out more about how we complement the Fiduciary Industry.
On Thursday 1st June STEP Guernsey hosted a summer social event at the newest restaurant in Town: The Slaughterhouse. Our aim was to bring together potential and existing students, members & business associates of Committee members, employers & professionals for a “Trust Open Day” in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. As a not for profit organisation we were extremely grateful to ZEDRA for sponsoring this event.
This year STEP Committee Members were on hand to share their knowledge and experience and to discuss various topics such as “exam techniques”, “networking skills” and “Guernsey Finance updates”. We were also grateful to have had representatives from the training service providers, Guernsey Finance, Locate Guernsey and our Sponsors on hand too. It was another popular and successful event and we look forward to future events in the 2017 calendar hosted by STEP Guernsey.

GUIDE DOGS Guide Dogs Guernsey Branch attends a number of events and holds collection days throughout the year. We are always looking for volunteers to help on a regular or ad-hoc basis.
DID YOU KNOW?
1.
Guide Dogs recently held a showcase in Guernsey in conjunction with the Guernsey Blind Association where people had the opportunity to meet with a local Guide Dog owner, to ask questions and learn more about the positive benefits of having a Guide Dog. In addition, a Sighted Guiding course was available for anyone who wanted to learn fundamental skills for guiding a person in the local community.
Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss. By 2050, there could be nearly four million.
2.
Every hour, another person in the UK goes blind. When someone loses their sight, Guide Dogs is here to make sure they don’t lose their freedom as well.
3.
We rely on donations to continue our life-changing work. Every pound raised makes a difference to people in the UK and Guernsey living with sight loss.
On Saturday 5th August, the Guernsey Branch will be holding a collection day at Waitrose Admiral Park and Rohais. We look forward to seeing you on this day where you can find out further information about our work in the community and upcoming events. GUERNSEY WATERS
A GIFT WE CAN ALL SHARE Guernsey Swim Adventures is a small bespoke open water swim provider. The idea born from two friends’ experiences of Guernsey’s stunning local scenery from a watery perspective. Jacqui Hunt and Jennifer Roussel are both ASA level 2 Aquatics teachers, who over recent years have enjoyed the waters around Guernsey. Along their journey they have been captivated by the scenery and marvelled at local wildlife both in and on the water… they could not throw off a constant feeling that it would be fun to share these experiences with others. Jacqui has always loved the water from diving and swimming to wakeboarding. However tennis dominated her life for many years and it was with worn out knees she turned to swimming. She is familiar with all of the Guernsey Bays having swum around the Island in several sections and to Herm and Sark on numerous occasions. She was awarded the fastest newcomer trophy for her impressive 17km Windermere Swim and last Summer won bronze in her age group in the British Open Water Championships in the Serpentine. Jennifer has been involved in teaching swimming for over 10 years. She has always enjoyed swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. More recently Jennifer has taken to paddle boarding with ease. She took on a 40km scenic adventure, paddling from Shepperton to Putney down the River Thames as part of a charity event then went on to win the ‘Battle of the Rock’ paddle board event in Jersey all in her first season on the water. GSA started with six pilot swims last August and thanks to the enthusiasm and trust of the swimmers these six swims grew to twenty before the season was out. They feel very grateful to the swimmers who took that leap of faith in their new venture with many new friendships being formed over a mutual love of open water.
“Our 2017 season kicked off in early June with weekly swim groups including two Introduction to Open Water courses. Introduction distances building from 1.4km to over 2km. We love watching swimmers grow in confidence and swim to bays they didn’t know existed. We enjoy encouraging and supporting swimmers to move out of their comfort zone whilst staying safe, allowing them to swim far without fear”. GSA also run swim groups catering for longer distances from those competing in a 1.9k in Guernsey Granite Man to those taking part in the OSS Dart 10km Marathon Swim. To compliment these courses GSA will be offering some one off Adventure swims in late July, August and early October. Adventures will vary from swimming breaststroke in search of hidden bays to long coastal swims linked by trail walks. “We have been delighted by the variety of enquiries we have received. As well as distance swimmers we have been approached by groups of friends and individuals who are keen to conquer a variety of challenges from swimming out of their depth to learning the fundamentals of front crawl ”. Sessions may include discussion about tides, technique, timing and training tips usually followed by tea. As well as guided swims and lessons this Summer GSA are introducing a series of distance events sponsored by Butterfield Bank (Guernsey). The series offers various distances from 1.0km – 4.5km and will be held at Fort Grey, Petit Port and Pembroke, details can be found on www.entrycentral.com. For swimmers looking for iconic challenges GSA are organising a Cancer Relief Guernsey to Herm Swim with both individual and team events and an overnight Lihou Island trip with adventure swims.

GSA will be teaming up with GSY SUP to run a fun swim paddle event in September and with a local cycling group for a relaxed cycle swim event. They are also hoping to confirm use of an outdoor pool in town for lane swimming, enabling office workers to arrive at their desks refreshed and focused. “ Safety is very important to us … our logo is the fluke of a whale tail, meaning ‘ Safe passage over Water ’ in Maori . We like to keep groups small allowing us to provide a more personal approach and keep everyone safe ”. Both guides are very familiar with local tides and weather conditions and try to find the best bay for each swim. They both hold recognised First Aid, water safety and life saving qualifications. For swimmer safety and comfort they have kayak support for all group sessions. Jacqui and Jennifer believe that with Guernsey’s large variety of bays and huge tidal range no one swim is like another. “Swims always feel different depending on the time of day, the weather and the reason for the swim. One day you might swim to escape emails and phone calls; the washing and cooking ! Other times you might swim to go fast or far; to win the race or reach another bay. Maybe you swim to conquer the fear of the cold deep water, rocks, seaweed or what lurks beneath”. As well as all of these reasons GSA encourage everyone to find some time to enjoy a little bit of blue space… in the peace and calm that open water offers; to relax and embrace a moving meditation.

STAY SAFE, BE SEEN & ENJOY! PLAN - know the tides and weather conditions. TELL - friends or family where you are swimming. WEAR - a brightly coloured swim cap. Cconsider using a tow buoy and wearing a wetsuit early and late season. TOGETHER - swim with company ..either in, on or by the water. WARMTH - bring warm clothes, a woolly hat and a warm drink for after the swim…water below 24 degrees is classed as cold !!
They both agree that whatever your reasons to swim, being immersed in open water you feel physically and mentally alive, healthier and at one with yourself and nature. You emerge with tingling salty skin… ready to engage with life and face the day.

One the most defining factors of ‘Roons’ – a business set up by Adam Le Gallez (19) and Remy Laine (20) that produces wax for your surfboard - is its emphasis on carefully sourced ingredients and environmentally friendly packaging. Remy and Adam point out that every year 8,000,000 metric tonnes of plastic is thrown into our oceans meaning by the time we reach 2050 the sea will be inhabited by more plastic than it is fish. Both guys are here to chat not just about the importance of wax for you surfboard, but about what makes Roon’s such a unique, sustainable and passionate brand. Words Ellie Cooper

LIFESTYLE / SPORT
Tell us a bit about yourselves – Are you both originally from Guernsey? Remy: As a day job I work as a data analyst. I love to be outdoors and have interests in not only surfing but anything to do with the sea. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junky. Adam: I am born on Guernsey and I work from my bedroom as a freelance cartoonist. Also very interested in the outdoors, music and space. Remy and I have known each other since higher education (Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre). What inspired you both to set up your own business? Both: We both liked the idea of having our own brand and getting our names out, we spotted a gap in a fairly saturated market and ran with it. The name of the brand ‘Roons’ reflects our outlook on life. Do you ever see yourselves moving away from Guernsey? Adam: Definitely, Remy loves the idea of moving to Brisbane Australia whilst I’d love to move to Los Angeles and further my career in animation. What is it about the island that you like best? Both: The best thing about the island that you are always next to the beach, even though we have lived here all our lives we are still finding new places to explore. What have you found hardest? Has anything come as a shock? Both: We have found perfecting the recipe for the wax extremely challenging, realizing how tiny differences in the mix can make a huge difference when in the water. For a surfing newbie – describe why wax is a crucial element of surfing? Both: Wax is what gives you traction on your surfboard, it’s what comes between your feet and the slippery fiberglass of the board. When popping up on the board it gives you the grip that you need. What type of wax should we be using in Guernsey? Both: In Guernsey the water rarely gets above 16C, however in winter it’s much cooler. Most Wax brands use the scale Very Cold, Cold, Cool, Warm, Mild Tropical and Tropical. For Guernsey we tend to go between Cold to Warm, Cold in the winter and Warm in the summer.
What is the process you go through to make your wax? Both: We begin with melting white beeswax and coconut oil in a double boiler. At the same time, we start melting pine rosin (solidified pine tree resin) which melts at a higher temperature than the wax and coconut oil. Once all ingredients reach a certain temperature we pour the rosin in and stir like heck. When it’s all stirred in we carefully pour it out in to 24 molds and let them cool. Once cooled we package them in their wrapper and they’re good to go. Have you had any funny moments during the setting up of the business? Remy: Covering most of my mum’s kitchen in wax! Do you surf yourselves? Both: Yes we do, love it. When did you start surfing? Adam: Remy first learnt to surf back when he was 14 at Guernsey Surf School and bought his first board when he was 18. I first tried surfing during a programme at school. I actually only purchased my first board this year, and then went on to decorate it myself. What makes your wax different to others? Both: Unlike most waxes ours contains absolutely no petrochemicals, only completely natural ingredients. We’ve both eaten a small amount of it to prove our points! It’s also stickier, locally made and exclusively the only one made in The Channel Islands. Tell us a bit about the ‘all natural carefully sourced ingredients’ Adam: Remy spoke with all our suppliers to be sure that the ingredients are really sourced sustainably. Beeswax, Coconut oil and Tree rosin are all such raw ingredients. …And the packaging is made with recycled paper – is that important to you guys, too? Both: There really is no excuse not to be using recycled paper these days, it’s no more expensive and is just as good as regular paper. Trees make up a big part of Roons, our clear plastic like wrapping is actually made from tree pulp, the Rosin is of course tapped from pine trees and the coconut oil is from the coconuts on palm trees. So we respect the trees a lot and any opportunity to use recycled paper rather than contribute to the global log trade, we like. If you had to take one music track with you to a desert island what would it be? Remy: Izebella – Jimi Hendrix. Adam: Lovers Eyes – Mumford and Sons If you had to take one surfboard to a desert island what would it be? Remy: A long board as they’re so relaxing to ride and I could use it as a boat to fish off of. Adam: “A hoverboard so I could get home” What life mantra do you live by? Remy: I don’t like to get too comfortable otherwise I know I’m not learning new things or being adventurous. Adam: ‘Pale Blue Dot’- is a picture I came across of earth taken from about 6 billion kilometers away. It puts into perspective how small we and all our problems really are.

WHAT'SUP GUERNSEY.. PADDLE BOARD YOGA IS MAKING A SPLASH! Words Polly Tapper Photography TOBY LE RAY & ALEX CHAMBERS
Picture the sun shining, sea gulls lazily skimming the water and plodding the beach, a few dog walkers pacing the shores and not a sound of your mobile phone or other device. This is the setting for the Guernsey Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) yoga classes.
there’s no need to worry about being out of your element on (and quite possibly in) the water.
The classes are run by Guernsey SUP with yoga instructor Alice Marshall and are held Saturday mornings during the summer months at Pembroke Bay. Alice explains to me, “Mornings are the stillest time and the weather systems haven’t settled in. It’s quiet on the beach and so peaceful. There’s no need to energetically set the scene with candles, music or incense. The natural landscape sets the scene. This is when Guernsey comes into its own”. So, if you’re looking for a different way to experience Guernsey and the beauty of its coastline, Guernsey SUP yoga may be worth a try. But can anyone do it? According to Alice, “anyone can do it, if you have or don’t have a yoga practice”. I suggest that it sounds to me like something not to be taken too seriously. Alice agrees, “You’ll see that everyone is just holding on, me included. It’s a real laugh”. But for this land-loving yogi, is it really a good idea? “Come prepared to fall in” says Alice, when I ask her if it’s safe to do yoga on the water. To explain ‘safe’, what I really mean is, isn’t it freezing? Alice explains, “Don’t worry. Brrrr, it’s the English Channel, but you’ll be wearing a wetsuit, so it’s fine. Once you fall in, the fear factor goes because you realise the worst thing that can happen is you just get wet”. Needless to say, safety is a priority for Guernsey SUP, which is a registered school of the British SUP Association (BSUPA) and all their instructors, including Alice, are registered instructors. It also helps to know there are no sharks in the water and that Alice and Guernsey SUP believe it’s important that the whole experience is enjoyable, so
It’s also perfect for the fine weather sportsperson. “If it’s windy and choppy, it won’t work”, stresses Alice and she tells me that they coordinate the timings and the season around the weather, but that also a little bit of movement is actually a good thing and this has to do with one of the key physical benefits of SUP, core strengthening. “Everything is core, even cat and cow pose [that is the pose where you’re on all fours and move your back from an arch to a u-shape] involves the core, but it also depends on the mood of the ocean”, explains Alice. So essentially, the calmer the ocean the less core involved but given you’re balancing on a board on water, there will always be some engagement of the core involved. I ask Alice what her favourite pose is, “Pigeon [that’s the pose where one knee is bent in front of you on the ground, the other extended behind you], because the movement of the ocean gets into the hips. Headstand is also great for the core and Savasana [lying down on your back] is amazing because the waves gently rock you and it doesn’t get more peaceful than that”. So, it looks like there’s a lot to love about this latest form of yoga. SUP yoga hasn’t been around for long, it’s thought to have started in 2009, but it’s already gaining a popular following especially among yogis who are looking for something a little different and a new way to practice yoga. SUP has the added benefit of helping you to refine your alignment so that you stay balanced on the board, and also by helping you to keep your core switched on. So, whether new to the practice or more experienced in yoga, SUP yoga has something to offer. I know I’m convinced to give it a try, even with the danger of falling in the Channel!

WATERPROOF TECHNOLOGY for those adventure filled summer months
Words Jessamy Baldwin
A soaked phone, watch or camera traditionally involved frantic rice burial and the inevitable forking out for a costly replacement. Spills, splashes, waves, rain, showers or swimming pools – if there was moisture around, your devices were treading a (thin) tightrope over a watery abyss. The first waterproof smartphones and tablets came onto the market back in 2013, progressing on from chunky waterproof cases and rugged mobile phones designed to withstand rough conditions. Fast forward to 2017 and the waterproof technology options are endless. There are phones, speakers, watches, cameras and fitness trackers that can survive a dunk in the jacuzzi or spilled pint at the pub. Some are even designed to capture water based experiences and track water based exercise. In this article, we’re bringing you a selection of the latest waterproof technology. What are you waiting for? Let’s jump in!
PHONES Waterproof - or at the very least water resistant - is fast becoming a flagship fixture on the mobile phone spec sheet. Sony’s Xperia Z line was the first to the table in 2013, but it was Apple’s iPhone 7 and Samsung’s Galaxy S7 that ramped up the waterproofing standards back in 2016.
Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017)
iPhone 7 Plus (2016)
Dubbed ‘the best smartphone in the world’ by many and for good reason. The S8 has IP68 dust and waterproof rating and is waterproof up to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes. Apart from the high price and slightly irritating biometric unlocking, the Galaxy S8 does offer an exceptional mobile phone experience. The large screen is a real turning point in flagship phone design. The camera and slick performance work brilliantly under the finger too.
If you want the best iPhone, the iPhone 7 Plus is it. It has an IP67 dust and waterproof rating and is waterproof up to 1m (3.3ft) for up to 30 minutes. While the smaller iPhone 7 has a good camera, the iPhone 7 Plus features a dual-lens camera that lets you zoom in 2x with no loss in resolution or detail. There are rumours that the iPhone 8 could be released in September this year. The handset is heavily tipped to retain the waterproof design of the iPhone 7. However, this may be increased to a more water-tight IP68 rating, to fall in line with its rival the Samsung Galaxy S8.

CAMERAS If you're off on holiday this summer, chances are you're going to get close to some water, whether it's a hotel pool or the open sea. Unfortunately, most cameras won't thank you for taking them anywhere near water. Fortunately, there are cameras on the market designed to help you capture your aquatic adventures.
Go Pro Hero 5 Session
Nikon Coolpix AW130
The Hero 5 Session will appeal for its smaller form factor compared to GoPro’s more traditional cameras, making mounting it to trickier positions a real plus. It combines 4K video, one-button simplicity and voice control. Best of all, it’s waterproof without the need for external housing – which has since been copied by the Hero 5 Black. You can utter commands such as "GoPro take a photo" or "GoPro start recording", and the camera will obey accordingly.
The ideal choice if you want to go deep underwater, the AW130 comes fully-loaded with a host of features there's a terrific GPS system, interactive world map and Wi-Fi connectivity, plus an altimeter and underwater depth gauge to boot. The AW130 also offers high resolution and can function down to a depth of 30m - as far as an Advanced Open Water diving certificate will get you.

FITNESS TRACKERS There’s a fitness tracker for everything these days, whether you’re a hardcore athlete training for a triathlon or just a commuter who wants to track your walk to the station and back. But whilst most trackers are designed to give a decent indication of the steps you’re taking, only a select few can record your activity in the water and turn that into useful information.
Fitbit Flex 2
£69.99 from fitbit.com Fitbit’s first tracker for swimming is an upgrade on the company’s first wrist-based tracker. Waterproof to depths of 50m, it remains a light and unobtrusive product. Once you’ve enabled swim tracking in the app and set the pool length the Flex 2 will track your laps, pace, distance and time in the water. It’s worth noting that the better your swimming, the more accurate the data will be – if you’re stopping to rest regularly or constantly switching stroke mid-length, the Flex 2 can get thrown off its game somewhat. It’s not the most advanced on the market, but it’s affordable and gets the job done.
Garmin Vivoactive HR £239 from www.garmin.com
Swimming, cycling, running, golf or skiing, if you do it, the Garmin will track it. Used by many professional athletes, the Vivoactive HR is both a fully featured fitness tracker and a multi-sport GPS sports watch, making it without question one of the most comprehensive fitness devices out there. You can go down to depths of 50m and the Vivoactive HR will track time, stroke count, laps and distance, giving you a detailed summary of your swim. It will also give you a SWOLF score – how many seconds it takes to swim a length added to the number of strokes required. It’s sunlight-readable and has a high-resolution colour touchscreen. You can customise the face design, receive smart notifications and even coaching if you want. It also has eight days of battery life in training mode or 13 hours using GPS. If you’re serious about sport, you can’t beat it.
Apple Watch Series 2 £369 from www.apple.com
Along with adding built-in GPS, waterproofing was the other headline feature for the Series 2 when it was first announced by Apple. Able to track both pool and open swimming, it follows distance covered, lengths and average pace, and can distinguish stroke style as well. During the swim, the touchscreen is inactive, but you can raise your arm to check in on real-time progress. Data is synced to the Apple Activity app, but there are a handful of third party swimming apps that support the added swim tracking features for more advanced insights. Waterproof for up to 50m.
SAFETY DEVICES The Kingii Wearable
£70 from www.kingii.com (priced in US dollars at $89.99)
Kingii is a wearable wristband that contains a personal flotation device. You activate the wristband to launch the flotation device, and it shoots up towards the surface of the water. The device stays inflated for 48 hours if necessary. It also comes with a compass and whistle. While it may not be the most attractive wrist wear for the beach, it could save your life. Perfect for surfers, young children and those who don’t feel too confident in the water.

Photography Pierre Bisson / gsyphoto.com Ready, set, paddle! Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) has teamed up with the Guernsey Paddle Club and Alan Jenner, the owner of the Guernsey SUP School, to bring paddle sports racing to the island this summer. As well as growing the sport, organisers want to help spread a sun awareness message. MUG has always been a forwardthinking charity, continuously looking for innovative ways to get people in the community thinking about their health. So, when the opportunity arose to sponsor a new sporting event that will encourage people to get active this summer, the charity jumped at the chance. Stand-up paddle boarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, having grown by 120 percent in the past three years. Guernsey now has over 200 paddle boarders, and that number is only set to increase as the sport appeals to everyone from extreme adrenaline junkies to seniors looking for a relaxing hobby. Anyone can give it a go. Now with the addition of racing on Guernsey, it's a great time to try out the sport.
Participants lined up along the beach, paddle boards under their arms, ready for a sprint start. They launched into the water to begin their paddle out around the first of the three buoys. The wind behind them during the first leg of the course provided the perfect opportunity to make up time, before battling their way against a gusting wind, to and around the third buoy.
(40 - 51) and veterans (51+), race and leisure stand-up paddle boards.
There was a great atmosphere on the beach as family and friends came down to cheer on and support the competitors. This kind of support is something the organisers hope to see more of as the series progresses.
Alan Jenner, the owner of the Guernsey SUP School and organiser of the race series, is fully aware of the dangers of skin cancer and hopes the events will help raise awareness of how the disease can be prevented and spotted early.
Alex Fuller was first over the finish line with a blistering time of 32 minutes 56 seconds, making a smooth landing and surfing a wave inshore on his 14ft race board, before sprinting through the flags. The first of the women to make it over the finish was Alice Digard with an impressive time of 38 minutes 29 seconds.
MUG’s sun awareness message, ‘cream up before it shows up’, is back for summer. To spread this every competitor is given a free mini suncream at sign up, and there is a one-litre tub at every race for people to use to ensure that everyone is sun safe out on the water.
All competitors compete in the same watercraft race at the same time, with the men doing three laps and women doing two, results are then split into board class and age bracket, adults (18 - 39), masters
Mike Richards, a MUG council member, is enthusiastic about the upcoming series, stating: ‘It's a great platform for MUG to engage with the community and promote a healthy hobby. It has been widely proven that exercise helps reduce the risk of some cancers and this is a fun way to enjoy Guernsey’s beautiful waters.’ The MUG Summer SUP Series will run from May to September and one race will be held each month, the first of which took place at Pembroke in May. The sun was shining and the crystalclear water was as calm as a lake, perfect conditions for the 14 competitors who came down, boards at the ready, to take on the short technical course set out in the bay.
#16. JULY 2017. THE AQUA ISSUE
Every race in the series is open to everyone and is not only limited to stand-up paddle boarders, but surf skis, canoes/kayaks and prones are also invited to participate, with separate races for each category of watercraft.
August will see the showcase ‘MUG Race’, which will be a sprint from Vazon to Cobo. At the end of the race there will be a family barbecue on the beach for everyone to enjoy.

For those who demand the very best, the pre-eminent luxury yacht brand Sunseeker offers exceptional and imaginative design, master craftsmanship, revolutionary materials and innovative technologies whether you’re seeking a sports performance model or leisure cruiser. The British brand was founded in Poole, Dorset in 1969 when such companies were unchartered territory in the UK, and whilst it has undertaken a voyage of evolution throughout the years (now exporting circa 140 yachts per year to more than 45 countries), the founding Braithwaite family are still heavily involved and the core values remain the same. In an age of automated assembly and digital production, Sunseeker are rightly proud that skilled craftsmanship lies at the very heart of Sunseeker’s seacraft, with each and every vessel being handbuilt and hand-finished. The firm employs over 2,000 highly skilled designers, engineers and master craftsmen. From the early years when a Formula One driver requested a leisure boat to accommodate a full width sunbed to more recent requests for storage for a golf buggy to options for towing an aquatic sea plane, the in-house team of boat builders ensures that every customer’s desires and whims are catered for and the focus is firmly on how the owner wishes to enjoy their boat. The name, Sunseeker, is synonymous with luxury & high performance and instantly conjures up aspirational images of enjoyment, leisure and fun- but what’s it like to work for the Company? We caught up with Guernsey-born Sunseeker Sales Broker, Matt Palmer to find out what the role entails…

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BROKER
HAVE YOU EVER HAD SOMEONE JUST RING YOU UP AND BUY A BOAT?
Due to this being one of the busiest times of the year, I end up travelling every week, far and wide to assist clients with all their boating needs. And for those who think it's all private jets and helicopters, please may I stop you there, as I type from my Easyjet flight en route to Nice. Although I must admit that I did splash out on an exit row seat! Early starts are the norm, a car usually picks me up at around 4am to whisk me off to predominantly a London airport and then on to the destination of the boat in question. Due to the nature of the product, this could be global, but the vast majority of the boats are lying in the Western Med, South of France being a traditional favourite, however, Mallorca and Ibiza are becoming the en vogue cruising grounds. There are effectively two roles I play as a Broker, listing a boat for sale, on behalf of a client and assisting a client with the purchase of a boat, either brokerage or new build. If I'm listing a boat for sale on behalf of a client, there are various formalities which need to be completed before we start the process in earnest, such as the requisite title documentation. Having professionals working behind the scenes at Sunseeker Brokerage gives the client huge confidence and reassurance, as we are more-oftenthan-not dealing with the highest priced asset the client owns. Once a listing agreement is signed, we can then kick the marketing machine into action and engage professional photographers, videographers, models, helicopter pilots, although drones have largely taken over from this form to capture running shots. This all gets tied together to produce the media for selling the boat which we then list on our hugely successful website www. sunseekerbrokerage.com, together with a whole host of other boating sites and print media. Many people assume that we only sell Sunseekers, but that is a myth, we have over 300 boats of all shapes and sizes, it really is a fantastic platform. Should the client be looking to purchase a boat, the first objective is to meet with the client and their family to ascertain the individual requirements and use for the boat. Many clients are new to boating, so it really is imperative to steer them in the right direction and manage expectations. Although I would love to see a brand new Sunseeker 131 Yacht lying permanently in Guernsey, I would always feel duty bound to explain the challenges of such a request! Once we have agreed on a desired criteria, based at first instance on size, age, but most importantly, budget, I will submit a presentation of available boats for the client to peruse. The client will then whittle these down to ideally one or two boats, however, this is not always the case. It's always intense spending all day with clients, fielding a barrage of technical questions, whilst driving/flying for long periods to the next viewing, but that's what makes it such a rewarding vocation. There's absolutely no greater feeling than handing over a boat to a client who is beaming ear to ear and getting texts and emails describing what they're up to on their cruising, you really do become part of the family.
I'm still waiting for a client to call up and order a boat on the phone, it does happen, but very rarely and certainly not to me, but then again, I'm not sure it would sit right with me, as I prefer the process of getting to know the client and like to think I can add value to the experience.
MARK TWAIN FAMOUSLY COINED THE ADAGE THAT THE TWO BEST DAYS OF BOAT OWNERSHIP IS THE DAY THEY BUY IT AND THE DAY THEY SELL IT, HOW ACCURATE IS HE? For anyone who subscribes to the adage that the two best days of boat ownership is the day the owner buys it and the day he sells is quite simply deluded. I champion anyone to spot an unhappy owner whilst they're anchored off Shell Beach during the summer boating months, some owners are all too quick to think of a boat in monetary terms when they come to sell, but when pushed they will admit that they have had many years of unforgettable money-can't-buy life experiences. With this said, one must be realistic when buying a boat, there will be on-going costs for suitable maintenance and repair, I communicate this from the outset and we can give pretty accurate budgets for new owners, it's just not worth being unrealistic, the figures come out in the wash and you would end up losing a client and friend. The industry is too small to be anything but honourable and respectful, the rotten apples are quickly dismissed. Also as a proud Guernseyman, I like to think that although we tend to be stubborn, it's in our blood to be open and honest...although at times too honest! We also insist that the boats we buy/sell are surveyed prior to purchase, this ensures that all aspects of the boat are duly checked for any defects, or issues. This then allows the client to confidently proceed with a purchase, or indeed walk away.
STRANGEST QUESTION A CLIENT HAS ASKED? I had a client recently ask whether anyone had fished off the back of their 115 Sport Yacht, one of the larger yachts in the Sunseeker fleet, to which I said no, owners were always too precious about their boats and particularly the teak! Anyway, last week I received a photo message of the client in question on the bathing platform of his 115 Sport Yacht, 35m in length, holding a 6ft short billed spearfish. I always love a client who knows what he wants and defies convention. Essentially our clients are buying into a lifestyle and it's up to them to live it as they see fit.
FAVOURITE SUNSEEKER MODEL? It has to be the Predator 57, it just looks how the name suggests and she's good for 36knots, which I can only describe as "gliding" due to her incredibly capable hull. Marry that with a fully retracting hard top and patio doors and you only have one winner. I just look forward to seeing more of this hugely vestige model in local waters, but fingers crossed you will very soon!

GUERNSEY FISHERMEN "THE LAST OF THE HUNTER GATHERERS" Words Paul Chapman Photography Etienne Laine
Surrounded as we are by water, it’s no surprise that many a Guernseyman has long plied his trade at sea. The fishermen’s catches have kept our restaurants supplied and helped Guernsey gain a reputation for excellent seafood. Some fishermen have made a very good living from their chosen profession, and there’s a certain romantic image attached to a life at sea, and the sea itself. But despite all this, Guernsey’s fishing industry is in decline. “The average age of a fisherman in Guernsey is over 50,” says Richard Keen, a local commercial diver. “Sadly, there’s very few young recruits into the industry. You can’t recommend it to people unless they’re really serious, really good, and they’ve got some financial backing.” To illustrate this, Richard tells me that a “decent crabber now is half a million plus, a new one is £1,500,000.” On top of this, the “average age of the vessels in Guernsey is 40 plus. That’s not a vibrant industry.”
out of business for a while...but the English say ‘if we start making exceptions for certain areas, everybody else will want them.’ ” There is a perception among the fishermen that there is a lack of support and interest in the industry from the States. “We don’t get any help from our government. Not necessarily financial, there’s just really no interest or help... nobody ever speaks to us, talks to us, all they want is statistics.” Richard continues, “there are simple things that the industry needs, and needs to talk about, because we all want a sustainable fishery, and there are things we can do without money, it just needs to be talked about.” To illustrate his point, Richard explains that, as there is concern about diminishing bass numbers (amongst others), he has been trying to get the States to bring an expert on bass over to the island to talk about current bass stock levels and the future, but “nobody’s interested.”
"The average age of a fisherman in Guernsey is over 50"
Richard knows what he’s talking about; now 67, he started commercial diving when he was 16 and has remained in the local industry ever since. According to the Historical Diving Society, he’s “probably done more air diving than anybody else in northern Europe.” Richard dives for spider crabs, brill and turbot amongst other things but his main focus is on scallops, of which he estimates he has caught “nearly 2 million.” Along with the prohibitive cost of buying a boat, there is the work itself. “Everybody thinks it’s a wonderful life, and it is, but there’s a lot of hard work. People don’t think about the early mornings in the winter when it’s freezing cold and blowing a gale and you need to go and shift some gear, and it’s very long hours...it is quite a hard life.” Guernsey’s fishermen have to abide by a bewildering array of rules, quotas and size limits imposed by the British government, regardless of whether they are relevant to Guernsey seas. “We think they’re our waters out to 3 miles or 12 miles, but in fact they’re British waters, and Britain is telling us exactly what we can do or can’t do.” New quota controls come into force in October this year with more following in January, and they are expected to have a serious effect on some fishermen’s ability to earn a living. As Richard bluntly puts it, “It’s going to put the trawlers out of business. And they’ve been going quietly
As well as having the worry of dwindling fish numbers and an apathetic government, there is also some concern as to what the effects of Brexit may be as most of the fishermen’s catches are sold in France. “We might be hit with more tariffs,” explains Richard. And unfortunately, he’s not expecting any political assistance along the way. Thankfully, it’s not all bad news: “our seas are still healthy. I’m diving every day and I don’t see any particularly nasty things happening.” And there is demand for our fishermen’s product: “the restaurants are desperate for local fish. And when they can’t get it and have to get stuff from England... rubbish.” Interestingly, Guernsey gets through a lot more crab now than it did 30 years ago. “You never used to see crab in dishes…but now they can get ready picked local crabmeat which is fresh every day.” Richard estimates that 2 tonnes of crab a week is taken locally in the summer. As Richard succinctly puts it, “we are the last of the huntergatherers.” Fishermen work very hard to keep us supplied with seafood, but if we don’t want to sacrifice our fishing industry, or take steps to protect what’s in our waters, we’re going to lose something very valuable. And that would be a terrible shame.

Beside the Seaside Words Astrid Mitchison, www.skindeepbeautyblog.com
Marine ingredients have long been used by beauty companies for their skincare benefits. For example, seaweed is thought to possess powerful anti-ageing properties. It’s particularly worthwhile for those who suffer from sensitivity or rosacea to incorporate seaweed containing products, as the wonder ingredient can help to reduce redness.
SKIN Start with a refreshing cleanser such as The Body Shop Seaweed Cleansing Gel Wash (£7.50), which is designed to remove impurities and is aimed at those with combination skin. When it comes to moisturising, the cult bestseller from British spa brand, Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream (£64), has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin’s tone, firmness and boost hydration levels. As the name suggests, the “hero” ingredient is Mediterranean algae, Padina Pavonica and it’s this, combined with floral and anti-oxidant rich ingredients which deliver impressive results in a cream which feels like a treat to use. What’s more, we love that it’s also now available in an SPF30 version to truly protect against premature ageing. What to do on those days when the weather is too miserable to permit a beach visit? Take time out to indulge with a pampering face mask. One of the most innovative products we’ve come across recently is Origins Maskimizer (£16.25), a mask primer designed to be spritzed onto skin prior to applying a face mask. Is it an essential step? No, but it’s a fun addition to a home-spa session. It contains a marine algae complex and is designed to help hydrate and soften skin so it’s in optimal condition to be able to obtain the most benefits from a mask. When it comes to choosing a mask, we’ve been impressed with The Organic Pharmacy Purifying Seaweed Clay Mask (£37.95), which is highly recommended for congested and blemish prone skin. The clay helps to draw out impurities whilst seaweed calms redness. Alternatively, try the wallet friendly Super Facialist by Una Brennan Salicylic Acid Anti Blemish Pore Purifying Clay Mask (£9.99). It’s a detox mask to help rid skin of impurities and contains pore-clearing salicylic acid, clay and mineral rich Dead Sea mud, along with moisturising shea butter and avocado oil to prevent skin drying out. For the ultimate in indulgence, check out Darphin Stimulskin Plus Serumask (£95), a hybrid that combines the benefits of the brand’s iconic serum with a mask. Ideal for mature skin, it contains powerful anti-ageing marine ingredients and precious Sea Emerald to redefine texture and leave skin firmed, with the appearance of lines and wrinkles diminished.

Toning seaweed extract and an invigorating blend of essential oils give this shower gel an indulgent, botanical fragrance and we love that it won’t leave skin feeling dry or stripped following use as the natural formulation omits “nasties” such as sulphates. We’re also long-time fans of Crabtree & Evelyn’s spa-inspired La Source range which has been created taking inspiration from the restorative powers of the sea and boasts a fresh aquatic fragrance. La Source Refreshing Body Wash (£16) contains anti-oxidant rich green seaweed and brown algae extracts along with mineral-rich dead sea salts. Fans of natural beauty products should check out Heaven Salt Glow (£37) which was created by celebrity facialist, Deborah Mitchell and incorporates both salt and organic algae and kelp. Salt Glow can added to a bath on its own to help relieve tension or used in combination with Salt Glow Oil as an exfoliating massage to help eliminate toxins. Alternatively, try Neal’s Yard Remedies Seaweed Salt Scrub (£18.50), a mineral rich body care product containing seaweed and sea salt, along with uplifting grapefruit and ginger essential oils. Importantly, both exfoliators are micro bead free meaning that they’re “ocean friendly”.
HAIR
Given the prevalence of post-swim and sea hair care products, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s an area of beauty in which to avoid marine inspired ingredients. Not so. Vitamin rich sea kelp helps to quench, thicken and strengthen hair, properties which OGX have harnessed in their Sea Mineral Moisture range- the Shampoo and Conditioner (£6.99) are impressively high quality and represent good value for money. John Frieda have also utilised kelp’s beneficial powers in the aptly named, Beach Blonde Kelp Help Deep Conditioning Masque (£5.89) which is an intensive treatment for dehydrated and damaged hair. It’s just the ticket for hair which has been bleached by the sun or otherwise! Another ingredient worth looking out for is sea salt, which adds texture, bounce and volume, as Lee Stafford Sea Salt Crystal Shampoo (£9.99) proves. It’s most commonly found in wave sprays though. Fake surfer girl cool hair, without having to brave the chilly waters of Vazon or Cobo, by spritzing a salt spray through your tresses. Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray (£19.15) is a cult bestseller for good reason. It may be pricey but the contents of the iconic neoprene inspired bottle help to create salty, textured, effortlessly lived-in hair and a little goes a long way. For a wallet friendly alternative, try Toni & Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray (£7.49) which delivers on the claims of adding body and tousled waves, whilst also providing a light hold to styles.

#16. JULY 2017. THE AQUA ISSUE
LIFESTYLE / TRAVEL
When the chance arose to visit Croatia, we of course jumped at the opportunity. As Toby and I had never been there before we were so excited to see what the beautiful coastal paradise had to offer. We were able to fly directly to Zadar Airport from Manchester, (great for a day’s shopping much to Toby’s delight) and then enjoyed a stunning 40 minute drive through the mountains to our hotel. The still orange tinted water accompanied by a piercing purple sky made for a wonderful introduction to Croatia, and started the week as it was to continue, fantastically. Toby loves the chance to be able to photograph new places, may that be small English Towns or idyllic Swiss Villages, he loves the challenge of adapting to new places and being able to achieve ‘the shot’. I just love being able to submerge myself into different cultures, tasting new food, experiencing local traditions and just enjoying being somewhere other than our lovely but small island.
Apart from enjoying the amazing beach next to our hotel, we were keen to explore the Paklenica National Park which was again, conveniently, only a short walk from our hotel. The hike in total took around 4 hours but it was completely worth it. The breathtaking views alongside the tranquil fresh water creeks made it a day to remember and a nice break from resting by the sea. I can’t recommend it enough, may you be an avid rock climber or simply enjoy a gentle stroll, you MUST visit! The nearest town to us was about a 15 minute walk (at a slow strolling pace) called Stari Grad. It’s very small, but full of great restaurants and lovely to walk around. Especially walking along the harbour in the evening, with a quick stop at a local ice cream stall to enjoy a scoop or two, whilst the sun goes down. No matter where your passions lie, whether it’s in photography, fitness or just having a good old fashioned chill, then Stari Grad is definitely for you!

MAISON DU QUAY ANDREW PATTON At 17, working behind a bar underage for a friend (don’t advise this), it became part of my social life. So I decided when I moved off to university that I would pursue this as a permanent job following my studies. After several years working in cocktail bars I went to bar school to further my bartending knowledge, which convinced me that this was going to be my career. I did a short stint back in Ireland helping a friend set up a few bars and then made the decision to move to China. I went with a friend of mine and created a European style cocktail bar and restaurant in Shenzhen. During my time there my interest in Asian produce and styles grew, which has influenced me in most of the menus I’ve created to date. Now, after two years in Guernsey I have partnered with Ricochet Group in developing the business Maison du Quay. This venue currently consists of our first bar the Mirror Bar, which specialises in fine wines, nibbles and possibly the largest Gin menu on the island with 48 Gins and growing and Maison du Vin, a wine retail wine shop with over 300 wines. My next project is to open our final stage, our second bar called Cuckoo, a quirky cocktail bar and Guernsey’s first speak easy coming very soon. Keep watching this space.

It would have to be a Negroni..something simple and probably one of my favourites to drink as well.
I KNEW I WANTED TO WORK BEHIND A BAR WHEN: When I was at uni I took a bar job to help with bills as the night life scene had depleted my student loan. So after the experience I had gained it then became the profession I was most interested in.
FAVOURITE DRINK TO DRINK: A glass of Spanish red.
MOST UNUSUAL DRINK REQUEST: We have a regular who always comes in and drinks gin and coke which I find strange even though she assures me it's lovely.

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN A BAR: I like the fast paced environment and getting face to face contact with customers. Spending time in an office would not be a great fit for me!

Movies Dunkirk
21 July in the Mallard. Starring: Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles Allied soldiers from Britain, Belgium, Canada, and France are surrounded by the German Army on the beaches of Dunkirk and evacuated in Operation Dynamo between 26 May and 4 June 1940, during the early stages of the Second World War. Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar) new project tackles the experiences of Dunkirk from three perspectives – land, air and sea, in one of the most anticipated movies of the summer.
Despicable Me 3
30 June in the Mallard. Starring: Kristen Wiig, Jenny Slate and Steve Carell. I know this movie technically came out last month but it’s pretty much a July movie so there you go! There’s no denying that kids love the Despicable Me movies, and adults don’t mind tagging along either. Why? Because they are downright hilarious. In the third instalment, Gru gets into some sibling rivalry when he meets his long-lost, charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist. Perfect for entertaining the kids (and you) on a rainy summer holiday afternoon.

oldie but a goodie - The Linnet Bird
2004 by Linda Holeman 'For you, I will write of it all - part truth, part memory, part nightmare - my life, the one that started so long ago, in a place so far from here...' India, 1839: Linny Gow, a respectable young wife and mother, settles down to write her life story. To outside appearances Linny is the perfect colonial wife: beautiful, gracious, subservient. But appearances can be very deceptive. Richly descriptive and mesmerising from the start, The Linnet Bird is a spellbinding story of love, loss, family and adventure.
new - the bookshop at water's end
11 July 2017 by Patti Callahan Henry Beach read alert! Bonny Blankenship's most treasured memories are of idyllic summers spent in Watersend, South Carolina, with her best friend, Lainey McKay. Amid the sand dunes and oak trees draped with Spanish moss, they swam and wished for happy-ever-afters, then escaped to the local bookshop to read and whisper in the glorious cool silence. Until the night that changed everything, the night that Lainey's mother disappeared. Now, in her early fifties, Bonny is desperate to clear her head after a tragic mistake threatens her career as an emergency room doctor, and her marriage crumbles around her. With her troubled teenage daughter, Piper, in tow, she goes back to the beloved river house, where she is soon joined by Lainey and her two young children. During lazy summer days and magical nights, they reunite with bookshop owner Mimi, who is tangled with the past and its mysteries. As the three women cling to a fragile peace, buried secrets and long ago loves return like the tide.

Haim’s new album ‘Something to Tell You’
7 July The long awaited sophomore album from popular American sister trio can be yours at long last. Sparkling yet moody pop rock sounds make ‘Something to Tell You’ the perfect summer soundtrack. Explaining their perfectionism to NME magazine and why the follow-up to 2013’s debut ‘Days Are Gone‘ took so long to finish, bassist Este Haim said: “We write and produce everything ourselves, we don’t have writers sending songs via email.” The humble LA band played Glasto in June and are set to play Reading & Leeds next month.

11 July GOT (as it’s commonly referred to these days) follows powerful families, kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men, all of whom are playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne. The upcoming season seven of the massively popular show may be shorter than previous seasons (seven episodes), but this one is said to pack a serious punch. Few plot details are known but if you’re an avid fan, you’ll want to tune in. According to broadcasters, the coming series promises a "brutal, bloody and wintry return to Westeros". Some of the show's film locations included Iceland (where North of the Wall scenes are filmed), Croatia (where King's Landing is set), Seville in Spain (where Dorne is shot) and Northern Ireland (where the Riverlands and Winterfell are based).
friends from college (netflix)
14 July The eight episode comedy series revolves around a group of friends from Harvard who are facing down their 40s. Ethan, Lisa, Sam, Nick, Max and Marianne have interwoven and oftentimes complicated relationships with one another, and the series explores old friendships, former romantic entanglements and balancing adult life with nostalgia for the past.

WOW THE YEAR IS FLYING BY FASTER THAN ANY OTHER YEAR, I KNOW THAT CAN’T BE THE CASE BUT IT SEEMS LIKE IT. I am very pleased that Island FM is again involved in the Customer Service Awards 2017. We are proud to be involved but it goes further than that. Celebrating Excellence in anything is a good thing, but recognising exceptional customer service is something that I feel very passionate about. Unfortunately receiving bad service is still far too common, and of course this can take several forms but the experience for the customer is just awful and so we should all do what we can I believe to embrace good customer service and to recognise its importance and indeed its increasing importance in the world of business. There is no place for poor customer service in business. Now at this point I do have to admit that we are all human and one of the few guarantees in life is that we do make mistakes. There is a clear distinction between a mistake, and poor customer service. As humans though we are naturally very quick to often complain when the service we receive and indeed expect falls short. I am not sure that will ever change. However we can certainly shout more about the good experiences we encounter on this beautiful island and I have to say there is so much to celebrate (thank goodness!)
I have had the pleasure for the last few years of being one of the Judges for the awards and I always leave the judging room after several hours of deliberation and a few gallons of caffeine feeling very motivated and excited. There are simply thousands of people that take the effort and the time to recognise and vote for some of the great people and teams on our island that simply go well beyond the call of duty, repeatedly. As I get older I am sure I get grumpier (ask my work colleagues and fiancĂŠe!) but it does seem that there are people of all ages that help make the experiences of so many people, good experiences. As Customers we should always be treated like we are the most important people in the world. We are! As people responsible for the execution of good customer service we should take the role and responsibility very seriously indeed. As Guernsey prepares itself to celebrate these awards shortly, it is a great time to reflect on all the fabulous customer service that goes on. Well done to everyone that goes the extra mile. Well done to all those who end up getting nominated. Congratulations to those that win an award. What you do impacts how people are made to feel and good customer service is infectious so THANK YOU.

THE GOLF CLUB
ST PIERRE PARK HOTEL
Set behind the fir trees at St Pierre Park Hotel there has been a major development in progress. Unless you have been lucky enough to have a peak at the site you may think that this is a small refurbishment project, only when you drive through the new entrance on Rohais de Haut, will you see the scale of the project. It is an ambitious project born out of a love of golf, and a genuine desire to get Islanders playing the sport. Managing Director & PGA Coaching Professional Matt Groves has long dreamt of an environment that would encourage the people of Guernsey (both young and old) to take up the sport “for too long golf has been under-represented on the island. Poor practice facilities and limited initiatives have led to a demise in participation. The Golf Club @ St Pierre Park will change that, and we hope will inspire everyone to take up the game.” The Golf Club @ St Pierre Park will be the home of various exciting components. All designed with one thing in mind… participation. GSYLife was lucky enough to be taken on a tour of the new facilities.
The new Driving Range @ The Club is an obvious place to start. The imposing new structure that houses the two-tier range is set to be one of the best driving range facilities in the South of England. The old range has been demolished and completely rebuilt and now features 3G target greens. The length of the range has also been increased, meaning that all clubs can be used without limitations. The booths are all heated and benefit from floodlights, meaning that the facility is usable 365 days a year. Local golfers can also benefit from “ball tracking” technology on all booths, allowing detailed analysis. As well as the state-of-the-art driving range, there is a floodlit practice area, and an academy only range. The Golf Club is the home of Guernsey Golf Academy. The aim of GGA is to encourage all ages to get involved in golf. The academy runs various initiatives such as adult beginner courses and junior golf camps. Ready Steady Golf is aimed at the younger players and aims to get children as young as 4 involved in the game. The golf course itself has seen significant improvements in the last 18 months. The Greens are now some of the finest in the

Channel Islands. Brand new 3G boxes have been added on every hole, giving players a consistent and authentic playing experience whatever the weather. The Golf Club will also boast a Golf superstore. The Golf Club will be the home of the well-established golf retailer JamGolf. The store will be the largest in the south of England and will carry many items of stock that will not be available anywhere else on the island. Having been awarded the title of official TaylorMade performance centre (one of only 4 in the UK), JamGolf@ The Club is the perfect place to get custom fitted golf clubs. TaylorMade were so impressed with the new facilities that they dubbed it “one of the best in Europe”.
new Restaurant; 19 Bar and Grill. With a south facing terrace overlooking the golf course, the new venue is sure to be a favourite for golfers and non-golfers alike. Head chef Neil Maginnis (formally head chef at La Fregate Hotel) will aim to bring his style of sophisticated cooking to the venue. The opening of 19 Bar and Grill also marks the return of Marvin Odillard (formally of Le Petit Bistro) as restaurant manager. There is little doubt that The Golf Club @ St Pierre Park Hotel is set to be a revolution for golf on the island. However, more than that it offers a facility that Islanders can be proud of and one that is set to be a family favourite for years to come. The facility is due to open in full on July 28th.
Pirate Bay Adventure Golf is the final piece of the golfing puzzle, offering children (and adults) the chance to play 12 holes of exciting, interactive and challenging adventure golf. The course features many tricky obstacles to negotiate; including a coiled snake, an active volcano and rowdy pirate bar. Golfers of all ages are set to enjoy one of Guernsey’s premier attractions. As well as the golfing facilities, the centre will boast a brand-

rubis Soap Box Challenge 30th july 2017 the rubis soap box challenge will return to Guernsey at the end of July, and is looking to grow in spectacle from last year's inaugural event. Run as part of the Guernsey Motor Festival, the Soap Box Challenge debuted in 2016 on an exciting course run from the Bordage, through Fountain Street and finishing in Church Square, in the heart of St Peter Port.
Around 30 Soapboxes competed in last year's event, and the creations for the event were truly spectacular. A Guernsey Bus, a huge egg, a rocket, racing cars and trikes were just some of the crazy machines on display. The winning team at the first event was The Greenhouse Project, with Brad Guille, Tony Duquemin and the fastest driver on the day Ryan Langlois, astonishing the crowds with their commitment over the jumps. They will be returning this year to defend their title! For 2017 the event will be bigger and better than ever and should provide even more thrills than last year's event, as the course will be moving to a new venue, namely St Julian's Avenue in St Peter Port! There is a fantastic new track planned, and with a better gradient, it will provide a more challenging course, with more twists and turns, re-profiled jumps and more fun! The course will begin at the junction with Candie Road, finishing just down from the Swan Inn at the pedestrian traffic lights. This will be a spectacle that you do not want to miss, so head down to St Julian's Avenue on Sunday 30th July and prepare to be amazed! This will be one of the events in the Island this year, and there will of course be excellent vantage points for spectating!

Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.
'YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT' ‘You can’t always get what you want’ – could be an estate agent discussing the price of a vendors property. In fact, it’s the title of a Rolling Stones track on their 1969 album. Keef ( Richards) & Mick ( Jagger ) were no estate agents ( Imagine if they were …..), but the sentence has a ring of truth in the property market, as well as life in general. Whilst we would always like to get the highest possible price for all our vendors there comes a time when a ‘satisfactory’ offer gets them onto the next property, and on with life. Always hanging on for the very top price – in this market – might mean hanging on for a long time ! Often the onward purchase can be achieved at a lower price than anticipated. It pays to aim high but at the same time be pragmatic as to offers that come along. The market is busy for realistic asking prices and a bit of a desert for prices set too high.
Keith Enevoldsen, Partner Keith Enevoldsen entered into Guernsey's property market as an Open Market negotiator in the eighties and joined Martel Maides in 2001 as a Local Market negotiator. He became department manager in 2003 and a Director of the Company in 2004.
Martel Maides was established over 40 years ago and has become Guernsey's most comprehensive estate agent for the sale, letting and management of property in Guernsey, Channel Islands. We are the only multi-disciplinary local agent with true expertise in each area of the property spectrum in the Island. Our team includes experts in Local & Open Market Residential Sales and Lettings, Property Management, Commercial Property, Retail and Industrial, Property Auctions and Field Sales, Fine Art and Chattels Auctions.
To continue with the Stones song, the lyrics carry on to say ‘ but sometimes you might get what you need’. Wow - these guys could have been estate agents ! Yes you might just get what you need ( the right offer that is ) – to get you onto the next house purchase or move. So if you’re selling -- be ambitious and ask what you want – but be realistic too – be prepared to accept what you need.

the long and thick of it
CREATIVE FLOORING FOR YOUR HOME Words POLLY TAPPER
Long and thick planks are currently one of the go-to products to create a more rustic, and period look for your home. But with technological advances, and style innovation, flooring choices are anything but one dimensional. As one of the largest visual canvasses in your home, flooring should not be overlooked as a means to create or overhaul the look in your home. Whether you’re after a beachy look, a floor to show off contemporary design features and minimalist furniture, the neutral palette of the Scandinavian style or a sleek and elegant finish, you’ll find an array of flooring finishes to suit. In trend at the moment is grey flooring. This can be created using a variety of textures and materials, such as polished concrete which need not be stark when offset with warmer furnishings and vibrant oriental rugs; or slate and vinyl tiles and even floorboards with a grey stain. With such an abundant choice, you need to think practically. Dan, Partner from Guernsey business, Carpet and Flooring Solutions, suggests the following key considerations before choosing a new flooring, “the suitability of what [you’re] using the room for and which products suit [your] needs best…and price; how much [you] need and what [you] want”. Carpet is also following the grey tone trend with carpet remaining popular, particularly for bedrooms and living areas where people prefer warmth underfoot and a softer look overall. Of course, carpet also comes in variety of styles, but thick and luxurious carpets are in. When it comes to the choice of materials, budget is a key factor. Dan says, “wool is [more] expensive. Man-made [carpets] come with stain resistant [coatings] like Scotchguard”. Some floor coverings more common in the past have also made a come-back. Cork flooring, popular in the mid-20th Century is again popular due to its easy-to-clean and mildew resistant properties and the different textural look it offers. Also back in style and harking back to the 17th Century when they furnished the floors of Versailles, parquetry floor is now sought after for its elegant, yet interesting design. Whilst herringbone remains a popular pattern for the wooden slats, chevron and the use of different
toned woods are other parquetry design options gaining attraction in recent times. Regardless of choice, it’s important to keep flooring in sync with the style of the room. But this doesn’t have to be in a traditional sense. For example, dark floorboards, whilst traditional, can wonderfully offset contemporary furniture, brightly coloured upholstery, metal and light stone. Whereas a blonde wooden floor, such as sustainable bamboo, creates a lighter and more relaxed beachy feel. Keep in mind the desired texture of your floor. Strongly textured surfaces, such as wire-brushed raw floorboards work best with tall ceilings and white walls. If you opt for a patterned tile, or pebbly finish, like a terrazzo, keep the rest of your palette muted. This means walls, cabinetry and furniture. However, don’t feel you need to be too minimalist – an occasional strike of colour with a featured accessary, such as a vase, painting, or lighting fixture can work well and create a little more drama in the space. It’s also okay to combine materials and contrast materials between rooms – just keep the carpet out of the bathroom, as this is a definite no-no, no matter what the style book you’re reading from. So if you’re in the mood to change your home’s look don’t forget the floor space. Changing the material of the floors not only makes a huge difference to the look and feel of your home, but can also add value. The sky’s the limit in flooring choices these days, so stick to durable and sustainable materials (remember you’ll be walking on them day in, day out) and a style that you can easily update where desired. This is why floorboards tend to appeal, as they can be stained, white-washed and even painted to create a different look. If you’re sprucing up a home for sale or rental, keep the floors practical. You might be lucky to find some hardwood or cork flooring underneath old and tired carpets that you can simply spruce up a little. Alternatively source more neutral and hard wearing coverings. This way the potential owner or tenant can add their own personality with wall art and accessories and won’t be turned off by a potential clash of style.

JUDITH SHELDON has become the latest addition to the Sarnia estate agent team. Judith moved to Guernsey almost 12 years ago with her husband Phil and their three children. Originally from Norfolk, Judith settled down on the island with a job in finance looking after a large property portfolio. However, when the opportunity arose to join another local estate agent she jumped at the chance, in addition to her personable character and infectious smile! So what makes Judith an exceptional new asset? In her own words, “Experience certainly helps when dealing with awkward situations that come up. I’m
very comfortable mediating between both parties ensuring that both have a happy outcome.” It’s this positive approach and manner that attract Judith’s clients to her and ingrain the strong relationship between property manager and landlord. “Keeping both tenants and landlords happy and making sure the best possible result is achieved.” Property Management has changed over the years and without constantly reviewing the management, landlords can end up losing out on rent with poor management due to unhappy tenants, “we’ve found that tenants are wanting more of a ‘home’ in which they can stay for a longer period, which means sometimes tenant demands and standards are higher.” And now Judith is part of the Sarnia fold, how is she finding it? “The team have welcomed me with open arms and I’m fondly called ‘Mumma Jude’. They’re a lovely bunch of people to work with who work hard for everyone. We enjoy a good laugh and socialising with each other after a hard day’s work.”

GOWAN 24 MANAGER AT DELOITTE
What made you choose to work for Deloitte? I moved back to the island three years ago, before which time I worked for BAE Systems in London as a project manager in their security consulting business. Upon moving back to Guernsey, I spent a great couple of years working for the Financial Investigation Unit, in the fraud department and subsequently the Financial Intelligence Service, which is part of the Guernsey Border Agency. I was keen to work for an international company again and to get back into project management. Deloitte has a great reputation: for the range of work it offers, the expertise of their employees and their commitment to flexible and agile working. I have a young family so, for me, the ability to pursue an exciting and rewarding career while balancing family life was very appealing. What does your average day look like?
INTERESTED?
Why not contact Kevin on kpinel@deloitte.co.uk or 01481724011
I wouldn’t say that there’s an average or typical day – that’s what I like about it! I work in the advisory team, which focuses on a variety of areas, including risk and regulation, transactions services, restructuring and insolvency, forensic, fintech, controls and strategy.
My day could involve working on a client project, briefing the senior management team on a recent regulatory development, participating in industry working groups to influence the shape of new legislation, attending conferences, delivering training or developing reports on relevant topics to share with our clients. For example, I recently spent the morning preparing a report on the impending General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), looking at how we might help our clients demystify and comply with the new legislation.
What professional training do you undertake? There is a phenomenal amount of internal training available at Deloitte, both for “hard” skills such as data analysis for example, and “soft skills” such as communication and delivering presentations. I will shortly be undertaking some forensics training in the London office to hone my e-discovery and forensic review skills. Aside from the formal training, I also learn a huge amount from my colleagues: there are so many subject matter experts, both within the Channel Islands offices and across Deloitte globally. Where is your journey taking you? I’m keen to develop my project and change management skills further and apply these to our client engagements. I have an interest in all things cyber-related, so am seeking to specialise in that area. Ultimately, I think that a lot of our work aims to make Guernsey an attractive place to live, work and do business, so I would like to feel as though the work that my team and I have done has contributed towards that goal. what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? It’s helpful if you have a broad range of experience, are open-minded and willing to get involved in lots of different projects. Everyone in the team is friendly and approachable, and I would advise anyone who is starting their career or looking to change roles to come and have a chat. MORE ABOUT

ISABELLE VETS' SECOND HOME
WITH HYDROTHERAPY ‘Isabelle Vets L’Islet is there to provide all pet owners at the north end of the Island with an excellent consulting facility with easy access and great parking. It is not replacing anything at the main Route Isabelle Practice but supplementing it with additional consulting facilities and of course the excellent CT and hydrotherapy units. There will be on site at least two veterinary surgeons, a qualified veterinary nurse, a qualified hydrotherapist, your friendly reception staff and often a C.T. trained veterinarian. Full anaesthetic facilities for the C.T. and minor procedures will be available. The premises are disabled friendly and families visiting with their pets are welcome. Parking can take up to twenty cars so there should be no competition parking with shoppers or other businesses.
Computed Tomography C.T. is a 3D form of x-rays with a lot more sophistication. The large ‘doughnut’ of the C.T. unit rotates around the patient taking slices of x-rays that are absorbed and computer translated into two dimensional images of the body. Multiple slices are taken and these can be generated into a 3D image. This sophisticated equipment can look inside the body in a unique manner and help diagnose many previously un-diagnosable conditions. C.T. is diagnostic for many procedures from tumours, to foreign bodies, to bone reconstruction. Isabelle Vets are using the services of a specialist radiographic imaging company called VetCT to help provide specialist reports in many cases. The images are sent to this company by a dedicated broadband connection and their specialists prepare a report and reply back within 24hours. Pretty smart!
Hydrotherapy and Rehabilitation The hydrophysio therapy system is extra-large to accommodate the largest of dogs and has treadmill angulation allowing for uphill walking. The concept is that pre-warmed water in combination with pre-determined water depth, treadmill speed and angulation allows positive therapy to increase blood flow, stimulate nerve response and muscle function. The team of three trained and qualified hydrotherapists will help your dog achieve improved locomotor capacity.
Hydrotherapy has many uses: Isabelle Vets senior hydrotherapist is a trained rehabilitation veterinary nurse and is particularly skilful in getting post operation or post trauma cases back on their feet again. If your dog has a bad back, an old cruciate injury or torn a muscle, then hydrotherapy should help speed recovery and reduce pain. Many cases that we will be asked to help will just be old and arthritic dogs. Hydrotherapy is great at helping pain control, maintaining joint function and stimulating muscle development to support damaged tissues. You will be surprised at how many dogs love the warm water exercise and thoroughly enjoy their rehabilitation sessions. Isabelle Vets encourages owner’s to be involved with the sessions and clients are invariably happy with the excellent facility and staff.

ESTERA CONTINUES EXPANSION PLAN WITH WITH HERITAGE FINANCIAL SERVICES ACQUISITION PEA SPONSOR GUERNSEY LADIES VOLLEYBALL TEAM Private Equity Administrators (PEA) is to sponsor the Guernsey Ladies Volleyball team at this year’s Gotland NatWest Island Games. The company, which administers private equity fund structures offshore and onshore, has bases in Denmark and Guernsey as well as Sweden where the event is to be staged. Peter Toyberg, PEA Group Managing Director says: ‘The Island Games is a fantastic event which attracts thousands of spectators to watch around 2,500 athletes from 24 different islands competing in 13 sports. It is all about teamwork and striving for excellence which here at PEA we relate to very strongly. It is great for us to underline the connection our offices have in both locations and we wish the Guernsey Ladies Volleyball team the best of luck.’ The reigning champions in ladies and men’s volleyball are Saaremaa who won gold in both events in Jersey in 2015. This year’s island games draw will see Guernsey face Saaremaa as well as Hitra, Jersey and hosts Gotland. Guernsey Captain Carla Marley says the funding is a great enabler for the squad: ‘The costs involved in playing team sports at an international level can be prohibitive, especially in the current economic climate. We are extremely grateful for the financial support PEA has given us and we hope that we can do them and our many supporters proud on the court. ‘
Leading global fiduciary and administration provider, Estera, has acquired the Heritage Financial Services Group (HFSG), an independent business providing third party fund administration, depositary, trust and corporate services in Guernsey, the UK and Malta. HFSG employs approximately 100 people across three jurisdictions and all employees will remain with the business and become part of the Estera team. Farah Ballands, CEO of Estera, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome HFSG to the Estera family; a team with an excellent reputation in client service, a value which is core to Estera.’ ‘This transaction, together with our acquisition of Guernsey-based Morgan Sharpe earlier this year, is central to the expansion of our funds service line, whilst also expanding jurisdictional choice for our trust and corporate clients,’ concluded Farah. Ethan Levner, Estera Group Head of Corporate Development said: ‘The funds market is a strategic priority for Estera and the acquisition of two leading fund administration businesses so far this year demonstrates our commitment to building an international presence in this segment. RECORD ILS GROWTH SETS THE STAGE FOR ZURICH INSURANCE MASTERCLASS Against the backdrop of record growth in the catastrophe bond and insurancelinked securities (ILS) market, Guernsey will be staging its fourth annual ILS masterclass in Zurich to share industry expertise on emerging risk opportunity for ILS managers and investors.
Schroders; Florian Heimann, Risk Consultant at AIR Worldwide; Stewart McLaughlin, Executive Director at White Rock; Nick Bugler, Partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher; Mark Helyar, Of Counsel at Bedell Cristin Guernsey; Rob Proctor, CoFounder and Chief Executive at Securis. Moderators are Fiona Robertson, Editor of Trading Risk, and Adrian Ladbury, Editor at Commercial Risk Europe. Registration for the Thursday 6 July event in Zurich is now open at the event website.
Guernsey Finance Chief Executive Dominic Wheatley said: “As international fragility and uncertainty increases, the ILS market blossoms and Guernsey, with its 50 years of international insurance experience, has always taken an industry thought leadership role in this asset class. At this year’s ILS Insight event, we will again be challenging conventional ideas.” Twelve Capital Managing Partner, General Counsel and Deputy CEO Christoph Buerer is the event’s keynote speaker. A leading figure within the international ILS space, Mr Buerer also serves as a nonexecutive member of the board of directors of Ikano Re, a reinsurance company controlled by the Kamprad family - the founders of Ikea. Mr Buerer will be followed by two panel sessions. Topics to be dissected by the panels will include:
THE GUERNSEY GOLF ACADEMY SUPPORTED BY ABN AMRO ONE OF BEST IN EUROPE NEW golf facilities in Guernsey rival any in Europe, according to a top golf brand executive. The Guernsey Golf Academy at The Golf Club @ St Pierre Park has opened, offering dynamic and entertaining tuition to adults and children. Sean Brady, director, custom and brand experience from TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Europe, said set up is amongst the best he’s seen.

Currently, there is a range of different courses available, including junior group and adult beginner classes. Group courses are a great way to introduce the basics of golf, in a fun and accessible environment.’ Younger players enrolled with the Ready Steady Junior Golf Academy will now be able to attend regular Saturday afternoon and Monday evening junior group classes. The children will have occasional use of a new, state-of-the-art Foresight golf simulator, which allows users to play many courses across the world and is unique in the Channel Islands. When practicing, the children will also be able to use the two-storey driving range with Pro-Tracer ball tracking and target greens. A greater competition element is also being introduced, in the now twice-weekly lessons.
The first quarter of 2017 saw 14 global transactions with $2.76 billion of risk capital issued – approximately $1.4 billion above the 10-year average. The outstanding market size of $27.19 billion is roughly $377 million higher than at the end of 2016, according to figures from the Artemis catastrophe bond & ILS market Q1 2017 report. The birthplace of captive insurance products like the protected cell company, Guernsey is now also a leading destination for ILS with the number of locally domiciled insurance entities growing from 804 to 835 by the end of 2016, a substantial year-on-year increase largely attributable to growth in the ILS market.

‘Over the last seven years, we have introduced many new faces to the game. With the launch of our state of the art facilities at The Golf Club we are well placed to help further grow golf locally,’ said Mr Sykes. ‘Having such great support from a local business leader such as ABN AMRO allows us to deliver many of our local initiatives, such as the recent Inter Schools Golf Cup at St Pierre Park, which saw more than 70 children participating in the programme, helping open the golfing doors to all,’ said Mr Sykes. Graham Thoume, managing director at ABN AMRO, added: ‘We have seen the number of young people playing golf increase over the three years we have supported the youth sport in the island. The new facilities at St Pierre Park are a fantastic springboard to open the sport up to even more children and adults. ABN AMRO is pleased to be able to support this new venture.’

PAUL ANNEGARN What is it like to work for you? As a manager I like to enable people to be the best they can and to take both responsibility and accountability with direct management support. Considering that we spend most of our working week in the office, I like the environment to be as serious but enjoyable as possible. It’s important to me to have a good, collaborative team. That means an open communication at all times. What do you as a company stand for? Credit Suisse is a leading wealth manager with investment banking capabilities and a strong presence in its home market of Switzerland as well as across Europe. In Guernsey, we rely on a very strong financial services ecosystem: a robust regulatory framework, competitive taxation, world class law firms, accountants, auditors and consultants, as well as a highly educated and skilled workforce. As a manager, I encourage the desire to innovate and drive progress with a supportive style across the whole management team. Every member of the team should feel supported and fulfilled in the workplace..
CEO and Branch Manager
How does your company contribute to island life? Credit Suisse has been in Guernsey for over 30 years and employs about 200 people. We are committed to developing individual skills, qualifications and careers for our team. We work with school-leavers and graduates to provide the training and experience they need to move into specialist and/or management roles. We support many charities and organisations and all of our employees are given a day’s leave to undertake community support. We’ve been the sponsor of the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. This year, our staff have chosen Friends of Frossard Children’s Ward as their charity of the year and we have set ourselves the target of raising £25,000. How do you ensure your employees are happy? We have a significant programme of staff engagement which includes family fun days, charitable events (including a fundraising triathlon in and around Havelet Bay), a choir, dress down days on Fridays and a host of other events initiated by our employees. However, it’s also critical that staff and managers understand
#16. JULY 2017. THE AQUA ISSUE
the importance of their daily contributions and how they fit into the bank’s goals. We therefore spend a lot of time communicating with our staff to make sure that they feel connected with the bank’s objectives. What was your best personal mistake? Not trusting people enough in the early part of my career. I soon learned that I must have the courage to allow individual staff or managers to tackle an issue in a different way. The outcomes can often be surprising and encourage a better performance of those entrusted with decisions. As an island what should we do more of? It’s important to constantly address the balance between maintaining traditions and way of life whilst adapting to the ever-changing world and not giving up on core values. What makes you love Guernsey? Island life! The fantastic sense of “family” in the community coupled with a beautiful natural environment. My wife and children really appreciate the sense of security and support they experience every day in Guernsey, as do I.etter.
Invest with Sam Water water everywhere “Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink” is a line (well, two actually) from the 18th century poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, penned by renowned British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. If you’d have told me all those years ago that I’d be taking inspiration for an article on investments from the line of a poem I was forced to study as part of my English GCSE I wouldn’t have believed you – yet 10 years later here we are! For those of you who managed to escape the torture of having to critically appraise (a phrase that haunts me to this day) what I can only describe as the world’s longest poem, the basic synopsis consists of a Mariner who retells the story of a horrific journey he had previously encountered to a wedding-guest (why a wedding guest you ask? Good question – answers on a postcard please). Essentially, the Mariner’s crew became cursed (and eventually died of thirst) after he mistakenly shot an Albatross, which had been sent to guide them through the thick fog and dying winds. Like the Mariner’s crew, who yearned for drinkable water, the demand for fresh water globally continues to grow significantly – aided by an ever increasing population and improving demographics as more people transition into developed(ing) economies. The existence of such characteristics is particularly important for us at Ravenscroft. Our investment process is centred around investing globally, which is designed to shield our investors from any geographicallyspecific political or economic events (the outcomes of which we have no control over or ability to predict) and thematically, where we aim to identify long-term trends, such as the above, and use this to our investors’ advantage by acquiring, high-quality, companies that should benefit from the natural tailwinds provided by these known traits. In that regard, water, as a theme, makes a compelling case for investment.
SAM CORBET, Ravenscroft Investment Management In 2016, bottled water consumption exceeded carbonated soft drink consumption (soda) for the first time in the United States. The continued emergence of the more “health conscious” consumer looks set to preserve this trend. Whilst this may sound like a “no-brainer” investment opportunity it is important to note that the major players in the bottled water market tend to be your consumer staples conglomerates – Nestlé (the largest bottled water producer in the world), Danone, CocaCola and PepsiCo all immediately spring to mind. Whilst we are happy to own (and do) a number of these names, bottled water is usually only a small part of a much broader product portfolio and, for us, water is not likely to be our primary reason for investment in these global brand names. As a result, those looking for a “pure play” on water will have to venture elsewhere. Unfortunately, from our perspective, this is where investment in water comes unstuck. Perhaps the most obvious stepping stone from bottled water is to explore the opportunity investing in water distribution companies (or the installation of the infrastructure behind them – pipes and pumps) offers. These areas present problems for us on two fronts. Firstly, these types of companies are primarily domestically driven with concentrated revenue streams and, as a result, they fail to satisfy our global criteria. Secondly, the investment management team generally dislike utility companies. We make a cognisant effort to avoid owning them because of the potential threat government intervention has on the profitability of the underlying businesses. One of the qualities we look for in the businesses we invest into is the ability to maintain margins by having strong pricing power. The level of regulation participants are subjected to (even among the, privately-listed, predominately water distribution companies) allows the
Government the opportunity to introduce tariff caps and this severely undermines a utility company’s pricing power. As a result, the exposure these types of companies offer fails to whet our appetite. If you exclude the aforementioned exposure, what you are left with is a bucket of niche, principally technology lead, companies. Whilst we like a number of these names, the opportunity set within this space is so small that we have been unable to find a fund that offers us enough diversification without significantly replicating the exposure to companies we already own as part of our global brand holdings. In this regard, we can’t help but feel a bit like the wedding guest in the poem, who started the story optimistic (on water as an investible theme) and left “a sadder and wiser man” (after struggling to find a fund that meets our stringent investment criteria). Whilst our search continues, until we are able to overcome this hurdle we will remain as “sideline investors” – tortured by the existence of water, water everywhere nor any fund to suit.
If you want to discuss investing with Ravenscroft Investment Management, then please feel free to call a member of our team on 732769.

Jo has over 20 years of marketing experience with a particular focus on digital strategy, digital marketing and data driven marketing. Before working in her own agency in the UK, she gained extensive experience in senior positions within some of the world’s top marketing agencies (including WPP) during her time in Australia and London. She brings with her a thorough technical and strategic understanding of how targeted digital marketing can yield positive results, either independently or alongside more traditional print or broadcast media. Jo said: ‘ Having begun my career in Guernsey in the early 2000s, I decided that it was the right time to make a permanent return to the island and bring with me my wealth of experience to support local business within the Channel Islands. I will be helping clients to identify their challenges and work with them to demonstrate how digital can play a role in solving these.’ Group Managing Director of BWI, Chris Betley said: ‘Jo joins us at an exciting time as companies are increasingly looking to maximise their marketing spend in innovative and measurable ways online. Jo has worked with a broad range of clients from start-ups to the Premier League, together with many global international brands. We’re absolutely delighted she’s back in Guernsey, bringing such highcalibre experience to share and are confident that with Jo’s additional and possibly unique experience, we will now be in a stronger position to offer online solutions, supported by our creative and marketing teams in Guernsey and Jersey.’

The BWCI Group are pleased to announce the appointment of Diana Simon as our new Managing Partner. With the continued growth of the firm, the Group has decided to divide the Senior Partner and Managing Partner roles, in order to spread the workload between two partners. Stephen Ainsworth, who has performed both roles until now, will continue as Senior Partner. Diana Simon has been a partner of the firm since 1991 and has led the personnel activities of the Group as HR Partner. She is a pensions specialist and also leads the Pensions Consultancy team. She will combine her advisory role to clients in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the UK and internationally with her new Managing Partner role. Diana said: “I am looking forward to my new role and working with BWCI’s experienced management team to continue to maintain the high level of service that we provide to our clients and to implement BWCI’s plans for future growth”. Stephen Ainsworth added: "It has been a privilege to have been Managing Partner ever since our Guernsey Office was established as a small branch of a London firm of consulting actuaries in 1979. Because of our talented team and the loyalty of our clients, BWCI has developed enormously over the years and I have every confidence that this will continue under Diana's leadership. We have been working closely together to transition responsibilities over the last year. Consequently, the changes should not have any impact upon our client services. I am pleased that my partners have asked me to continue as Senior Partner and to remain part of the management team." We wish Diana every success in her expanded role and thank Stephen for his major contribution in developing the Group to become the largest actuarial consultancy in any international finance centre globally.

WORKSPACES as the lifeboat heads out to sea on an errand of mercy, whether to assist some souls in danger, or even on exercise, some might watch it disappear into the distance and idly think “Hope it’s not too rough or - I wonder where they’re bound?” Few consider what lies behind the scene. Ensuring that 40 odd tonnes of boat, with 2,500 shaft horsepower will instantly do what is asked of it in any weather , is quite a challenge and the embarrassment of “ It won’t start” is not an option when somebody’s life may be at risk and every second counts. The St Peter Port lifeboat sits on its mooring, day in day out, powerful, impressive, ready to go. The man quietly responsible for this is the Station mechanic Carl Bisson. A crew member since 1995, he knows what it is like to abandon the Sunday roast or playing with the children to answer the call. His family knows what it’s like waiting for him to come home on a dark and stormy night. A marine engineer by profession, with a wide range of experience, Carl ensures that the lifeboat is always ready for action. This includes monitoring a wide range of boring yet important details, such as ensuring that all the lifejackets are in date, in good working order and inspected. Many items of equipment have expiry dates, whether they be flares, rockets or even the self-heating meals carried. Hundreds of items of equipment and parts all need to be ordered, in place, tested and accounted for. A place for everything and everything in its place. We expect him and the volunteer crew to be brave and professional. Just as well - as he’s proudly committed to being the best. Photography Tony Rive
