Light up your life with effective lighting in your home Words Polly Tapper

Light and bright is clearly the way we now want to live. More of us are opting for design in our homes that maximises the use of open space and glass and allows light to flow unhindered into living areas. With this objective in mind, lighting design has become centre-stage and a lighting budget is a must for any new renovation project or build. Just like you wouldn't start colouring in without having an outline first, lighting for your home should be considered during initial planning stages. Before you get started, you need to understand the sources and direction of any natural light. For example, a room that is lit by from the south could enjoy warm and bright light all day, whereas light sources from other directions may be patchy and require enhancement with electrically sourced light. The next step according to Katie Le Tissier, Interior Designer and Showroom Manager at Acorn Interiors, is to consider that “you will need two types of lighting, ambient and task.” Task lighting comes first and is the practical kind of lighting. The use of the room will dictate the requirements. For example, in your living room you may need lighting for reading or in a kitchen, this is the lighting needed for cooking. After planning for your task lighting, you can then start to play with ambient lighting. Ambient lighting helps to reveal the texture and depth of the room and to play up any architectural features or special objects. This is where art meets science and a designer will use the tools of different lighting technology working with ceiling, floor and wall lighting and plug-in lamps to balance light, shadow and reflection. The scattergun approach of installing downlights has been surpassed by a more sophisticated approach where the lighting source is either hidden, or itself a feature and different sources of light combine to create an overall vision. Katie adds, “layering of light is vital to be able to create an interesting and dynamic space, while still being able to change the mood easily”.

To create a visual point in the room, keep in mind that our eyes will be drawn to the brightest part of a room. So if you're already working with an existing lighting scheme, Katie suggests that layering is the most effective way to improve an area’s lighting and create a more inviting space. She also advises that pendants can be a great way to break up a space and also act as a decorative feature. Another critical element of lighting is control. This covers everything from where you place the switches, which lights you can subdue with dimmers and also any technology platform you use to control your lighting and other aspects of your home’s environment. As Katie explains, “you want to be able to change the mood at a flick of a switch from a vibrant living space to a romantic dinner setting.” So if you're interested in upgrading a space in your home or if you're starting from scratch with a new build, consider putting aside some budget for lighting. Acorn Interiors offer a design service and can provide a full lighting plan, or help you choose an appropriate fixture for an existing space. They stock some of the leading British pendant lighting designers, including Tom Raffield and Tom Dixon. Similar in first name and their shared love of the pendant-style light only, Tom Dixon favours metallic and bold shapes for his pendant designs. He also plays with organic shapes and reflection. On the other hand, Tom Raffield works with steam bent sustainable wood, which is woven into intricate, and generous natural shapes through which the light escapes, creating its own patterns of shadow and light. They also stock TALA, an LED bulb design company, with environmental ethics at its core - not only did they craft their beautiful bulbs to be energy efficient and to fit a variety of fittings, so that you can replace traditional bulbs to lessen your energy consumption by up to 90%, they also plant 10 trees for every 200 units sold.

GOAL50 AND THE CAPE FLATS Words Ellie Cooper For most of us, three hot meals daily and the opportunity to live life without too much consideration of our health, except in a wellbeing sense, is something we take for granted. Britain is used to living with ease, so much so that we barely wear out old clothes before we buy new ones. We eat too much, we throw away too much – in 2015 Britain binned 15 billion pounds worth of food - we have a silly number of electronical devices and on top of those things we are showered with opportunity. Not having the option to go to school is something no local child has ever had to comprehend and – hopefully – is something no local child will ever have to comprehend.

For those born in the Cape Flats of South Africa though, life is not so handily presented on a plate. Crippled by violence, drugs, unemployment, and crime, every sunrise brings with it a new potentially life-threatening challenge. The physical absence of fathers is now considered the most significant family and social problem facing Africa, with many fathers abandoning their role in the home, utterly disconnecting themselves from their families and leaving behind a void in their offspring’s life that is ripe for exploitation. Those living in the Cape Flats have been greatly helped by Guernsey based charity Goal 50, a charity set up by Nigel Pascoe with the hope of supporting the Great Commission United (GCU), a non-profit making Christian soccer academy set up by Mario Van Niekerk in 2001. On his inspiration for setting up Goal50 Nigel Pascoe says, ‘For a number of years, I had been involved with a football charity which was connected with Plymouth Argyle FC. I was in Cape Town for the World Cup in 2010 and took the opportunity to look at some soccer schools in the Cape Town area. I wanted to see what the infrastructure was like and to see what support was needed for the future. I guess it was a combination of my love of football, my Christian faith and my business background. When I met Mario Van Niekerk, he told me of the dream he had for his soccer school and I thought he deserved help. He was doing the most amazing things in his community in the most difficult of circumstances. My philosophy is to try and make a positive difference in people's lives’. Mario Van Niekerk, a former gang leader, turned his life around and took a vow to commit to preventing others from succumbing to the same lifestyle as he once had. Since this turn around he has arranged 50 tutors and coaches to go into schools in Heideveld and work with them to improve participation as well as literacy. Deciding on football as a universal language to gift children with important tools such as integrity, perseverance, creativity and a strong work ethic, Mario, the GCU and Goal50 now reach even further beyond a soccer academy by offering hot food, valuable training in life and work skills and drug rehabilitation services. Feeding programmes across the Cape Flats area of Capetown, in Khayelitsha, Heideveld, Langa, Nyanga, and The Ark have provided 220,000 meals since 2014 and it is anticipated that by 2017 a further 125,000 meals will have been provided. For many families, this is the only hot meal they will receive per week. One hundred and ten heroin addicts are currently going through a biblical rehabilitation programme supported by Goal 50 and a further three hundred and ten men who are Aids or HIV positive, abused or drop-outs find temporary shelter here, too. Goal 50 has made a commitment to provide one meal for these 420 men on a monthly basis. What’s astonishing about this centre is the fact that its record is actually better than any government funded organisation. In November 2014, Goal 50 also purchased a property to be modified as a safe home, a project that will provide training to caregivers, pay for supplies and provide elementary education and life skills. A day centre is also on the agenda, with Goal 50 hoping to utilise land purchasing opportunity in Heideveld to create a centre that will benefit 100 children daily, allowing parents to work whilst their offspring develop and learn in a safe environment. It is hoped this will further reduce the temptation for young people to enter into a gang-led lifestyle by setting them up with priceless attributes for the next stage of life.
