Roof design may not cross your mind when you’re thinking of renovating or building a new home, but recent advancements in materials and clever architecture mean it’s now a serious design consideration. There’s no need to do what convention dictates – you can have aesthetics, extra space in your home (without extra footprint) and make environmental and power saving gains and it’s all down to a single surface area – the roof. David de la Mare, Managing Director and Chartered Architect from Guernsey business, DLM Architects helped shed some light on this fascinating area of design and how it fits in with his design ethos. Whilst “from a practical perspective the roof is water-proofing for the house,

that roof works. There’s more space and cost-efficient ways to adapt the existing house, from a design and energy point of view”. If you want to create a particular look for your home, your roof can have a dramatic impact on overall aesthetics. The good news for Guernsey homeowners is that there’s no material that’s off limits. The mild climate here gives license to be creative and create a home far from the norm. In David’s experience, he’s worked with a huge variety of materials including zinc, copper, coated materials, wood cladding and thatch and tries to incorporate reclaimed materials or materials available already on the site to minimise cost and create a visual feature out of the roof to fit the home. “Every project is unique and

there are so many other opportunities”. David goes on to explain the benefits to be gained not only through aesthetics, but also by providing environmental benefits, such as using the roof to collect solar energy or to provide thermal benefits. “Whilst the typical roof structure in Guernsey is the pitched tiled roof, there are a lot of benefits with the flat roof.” Some of these benefits include minimising overhang and therefore shadow on your own grounds or your neighbours’ and using less materials because the surface area is smaller, thereby reducing cost and also minimising heat loss and gain.

The key benefit of the slate is that it incorporates the solar capturing properties in the material, without the need for panels, making the pricing comparable to normal slate, as David puts it simply, “you’re buying one product, but it’s doing two things”.

“There are a lot of ways to harness everything we already have in terms of thermal gains and ventilation and how that can affect how our homes operate just through the way we design our homes, rather than adding more cost. This is something we focus on as a practice. Every house is unique to its own site, setting and environment and should be designed as such, so as to maximise its potential in its site”.

WAVING HELLO TO A NEW WAY OF AIR TRAVEL If there is one topic guaranteed to cause a debate then it’s inter-island travel. GsyLife caught up with the newest entrant to the market - Waves.

When entrepreneur Nick Magliocchetti moved to Guernsey last year, he quickly established that one of the biggest challenges islanders were facing was a lack of choice with air travel and the absence of an airline which truly meet the needs of the community.

‘But using technology, we can exceed those requirements and at the same time, use that technology to make booking and check in as quick and easy as possible.’ Club Waves, uses the same KYC approach which financial institutions follow before they take on a client. All passengers will need to complete a pre-flight identify authentication and security check which will be securely kept for future flights.

‘I spoke to hundreds of people in the first few months of being in Guernsey from taxi drivers and waiters through to friends and business people and asked them what frustrated them about island life. The same thing kept coming up time and time again and so I saw the opportunity and started bringing together a team which could deliver a solution,’ he said. The solution is Waves, a technology led, on demand air taxi service, which during September will start operations using two Cessna Grand Caravans. 2-CREW arrived on island in August and is being used for training, medevacs and freight with 2-SOON launching the passenger service. Its brand new aircraft, to be named 2-WAVE, will come from Wichita in America and will also be used for passenger travel between Guernsey and Jersey. Waves plans to apply for licences to expand its operation to France and the UK in 2018 with demand and when more aircraft arrive. Waves' aim is to revolutionise inter-island travel by having a flat rate of £65 one way to and from Jersey, 20kgs of baggage included and the ability to carry pets, sports equipment and freight. In his pre-Guernsey life Nick has used technology to transform failing business and so it comes as no surprise that technology will be evident in every step of the customer experience. It’s even created its own tech-based system to ensure that pre-flight security will be industry leading. ‘We are regulated in the same way as every other commercial airline and in order to get our air

‘Because the security checks are done in advance, when passengers come to board, we will simply verify their identity using smartphone technology. Every flight will have two pilots and so one will do the pre-boarding security check while the other readies the plane for departure and it means we can have minimal turnaround time and a 15 minute check in,’ he said. The technology being used by Waves is being developed in-house and will also allow the company to communicate quickly and easily with passengers. ‘If there is fog then we can let passengers know not to come up so that they can either stay at home or the office or enjoy a bit more holiday time. We believe the investment we have made in technology will ensure we have unrivalled security and unparalleled customer service.’ A customer experience manager will join the Waves team in September and they will then look at adding benefits to Club Waves including a club lounge in their St Peter Port office, where the team is based. It now employs 20 people including two in Jersey, where the company will also have a base. A number of pilots have already joined the team but having committed to having two pilots for every flight and recognising that qualified pilots with the flying


experience Waves is stipulating are not readily available in the islands, it has decided to continue investing in the islands by launching the Waves training academy, which will see its first student intake join next year. ‘Not everyone has the finances to fulfil their passion for flying and so we want to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a commercial pilot with Waves. It’s possible they will never have been in a cockpit before or that they have done multiple flights, it doesn’t matter, they just need a passion and a commitment to helping Waves realise its ambitions of serving islanders,’ said Mr Bisson. Simon Crook, who is based in Guernsey and is a senior training captain at Virgin Atlantic Airways, is Waves’ aviation advisor. ‘Waves have demonstrated again that they are a very forward-thinking and innovative airline prepared to set up their own academy. We are already in contact with major training providers to ensure we recruit the right people and offer first class training to our future pilots. We will try and use as much of island resources as we can thereby supporting the local economy and providing an exciting and rewarding career for local people,’ said Captain Crook. Recognising the growing interest islanders have in Waves, the company is launching a new website, have on-going active social media channels, have introduced a regular newsletter and been involved in a number of community events including the West and North Shows and the Harbour Carnival.
