I hope you are all well and keeping cosy as we head into the colder winter months! I have enjoyed some lovely autumn walks this year, with my trusty hound of course! The blackberries seemed to arrive particularly early this year and I was delighted to gather several containers full, which are now safely packed into my freezer for winter treats! I also collected a large bag full of sloe berries which were in abundance this year. These are also in my freezer and I must make some time to sort them out. Apparently Sloe Gin is easy to make and very delicious, maybe I could just about get some ready for Christmas or perhaps I have missed the boat on that front ! Either way, it will be fun to give this a go! As well as berries, the acorns and conkers seem to be plentiful too, and the squirrels are happy it seems. They have been busily collecting and burying/storing them away in secret hideaways for winter feasts. I do love the autumn months. The colours and the light if caught on the right day, can be spectacular and with all the beautiful countryside around Surrey we are very lucky to be able to witness magnificent colours as the leaves change, often from our windows in many cases. November is of course a time to remember; 11th November marks the day that WW1 ended — at 11am, on 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. So let’s all pause for two minutes at that point, to remember the fallen. Over recent years November has also become the month when many grow a moustache to mark ‘Movember’ and raise funds and raise awareness for men’s health. I’ll be keeping an eye out for some new ‘tashes over the coming months! Keep well and please do remember: ‘Hands/Face/Space’ Wash your hands regularly, especially when you return home. Cover your face with a mask when going into public spaces and keep a good distance from others. We need to keep on with these new rituals, especially in the winter months. I look forward to being back with you for our December/Christmas issues. With Warm Regards,

Ros x

Is a DIY Will worth the risk? Willyouactuallysavemoney? One of the main reasons for preparing your own Will is to avoid incurring the costs of either a solicitor, a Will writer or an online service provider. You might save money up front, compared with using a professional service, but if you get anything wrong, you could be storing up costly complications for your family and friends to resolve, when they come to put your wishes into effect. Equally, they have no one to blame but you if things do not go smoothly in resolving any issues and it could slightly sour otherwise happy memories, having to unravel a bit of a tangled web that could have been avoided. Is saving money worth it? Using a professional service gives you the peace of mind that things will be left in order on your death. The benefit of this is a personal decision. You will not receive any advice in terms of whether what you are doing is the best option, any pitfalls about what you are implementing or how things might be done better. You can only truly judge the benefit of the advice once you have received it, but knowing that you have made the right choices can be just as valuable as realising you could have made mistakes.

deal with who would inherit if they died tomorrow. But what if any of your beneficiaries have died before you? Have you accurately defined everyone in your Will? For example, stating“my children”or“my grandchildren”would not automatically include step-children or step-grandchildren which may or may not be your intention. Do you have pets, and do you need to make arrangements for them? Items like jewellery or cars can be a valuable part of an estate and leaving particular things to certain people may mean you wish to“even things up”, but might not be sure of the best way to do this. You might be thinking of your estate in terms of particular assets and want to leave your property to one beneficiary and the rest of your estate to another; this is fraught with risks and needs careful drafting to accurately reflect your intentions. Should gifts in your Will be free of or subject to tax and expenses (and mortgage), what does it mean if you say nothing about these things? This is a case of not knowing what you do not know and why taking advice is important. How we can help you

As simple as it sounds, incorrect signature of Wills is the main reason Wills are either not valid or there are extra hurdles to go through once you have died, to prove that the Will was validly executed.

At TWM, we offer initial meetings to discuss what you are thinking in terms of your Will, with no obligation to proceed. We will provide you with a fixed charge for preparing a Will, based on your wishes, for you to consider. You have nothing to lose, other than some of your time, in discussing things and seeing if using a professional to draft your Will might be good value for money.

Often people do not consider the“what ifs”and

HOW CAN WE MAKE CHRISTMAS 2020 MERRY? With all the trials that British residents have been through this year, the thought of Christmas marred by various levels of Covid-19 constraints is saddening. So, we have to find ways to create and spread holiday cheer and joy with the freedoms we still have. One idea for brightening up our world in this “new normal“ situation, is to decorate the outsides of our properties more than we have generally done in the past, to provide cheer to neighbours and passers-by at a socially safe distance. One of my successful bids in the online “silent auction” (of some of the contents of the Allen home & garden) was the extensive collection of Christmas decorations. Among which was a display including some large shiny red bells and berries, the size of which I first thought ought to go onto the front of a school or other public building. But I’m now thinking of putting them onto my front fence, for a big and beautiful display. I hope other people may feel and do something similar. If people would like to send photographs of their Christmas decoration efforts to us, we will include the best of them in our next newsletter.

Wishing to sell some of the recently acquired decorations to make a bit more money for the Cheryl and Roy Allen Memorial Fund for the LRA, we hope to have a Swan Centre Barrow on Saturday 7 November, from 10am to 4pm. If we do, the Barrow will display “pre-loved” tree and house decorations, as well as new Christmas cards, gift wrapping and crackers, all at low prices. In addition, there will be new or as-new toys and games which will make good seasonal gifts for the young or young at heart. These can be won by playing a simple game. This 7 November sale may be followed by more uses of the Swan Centre Barrow on Thursdays, Fridays and/or Saturdays during the month of November, hopefully finishing the first week of December. Please let us know if you like our outside decoration idea and if you can come to (or perhaps volunteer to help with) our Christmas Barrow days. Or with any other ideas for how to make our Christmas merry, please contact me. Also watch for our Personal Health Responsibility Stall in late November. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

What is the future for the ARA?

Over the past few years, readers of this page will have seen that, from time to time, we have made an appeal to residents asking for volunteers to join us on the committee. Those appeals have met with varying degrees of success but it has often been the case that, as soon as a new volunteer has joined us, someone else has stepped down thus maintaining the status quo. Although the Association’s Constitution allows for a committee of 16, the ARA’s Standing Committee is currently made up of just 10 people and we are in dire need of some fresh blood to continue the Association’s work and ensure its survival. A number of committee members have been in place for 20 years or so and been dedicated to working on Ashtead’s behalf but all of us, regardless of length of tenure, would love to be able to start handing over our work to new people, otherwise we risk the Association’s demise. Fresh thinking and new energy are vital to any organisation and that is what we are seeking. We are currently working on a redesign of our website, which we hope will give it a fresh, modern look but we would very much welcome some help with that work from anyone with skills in that field. We would also love to become more social media savvy so, again, help, please! To remind you of some of the work we have done over the years, or been instrumental in effecting:

• Installation of lighting on Woodfield (Northcott Way) to make it a safer walk from the station to Barnett Wood Lane.

• Extending the pavement on the North side of the railway to make crossing Woodfield Road safer.

• Getting higher lights erected on the iron footbridge (aided in this by Tim Ashton) to make this passage safer.

• Reviewing all Planning Applications in Ashtead and making representation to the Council.

• Persuading the Woodland Trust to divert

construction lorries away from Park Lane and Farm Lane and encourage all visitors to the site to use the “Derby” traffic route.

• Organising the annual Ashtead Spring Clean. • Sponsoring Ashtead Tree Wardens. • Organising the cleaning and repair of the War Memorial at St. George’s.

• Supporting the fight to get a pharmacy back in The Street.

• Maintaining an up to date web site. • Ensuring planned level crossing closures are

arranged to minimise disruption for residents, whilst obtaining free parking overnight in the station car park and a car placed available to ferry residents home.

• Obtaining an off-peak parking tariff in the station car park.

• Planting and maintaining the station car park flower beds.

• Leading the fight to try to ensure the Green Lane rail crossing is not closed.

• Persuading Network Rail to improve the Lady Howard crossing.

If any of the kind of work listed above matters to you, then we need your help to ensure its continuation. We know that one committee member will be standing down next year and, in all likelihood, I will be standing down as Chairman and that role will be vacant. The Association is very much in need of your support so, if you are interested in learning more, I’d love to hear from you at chairman@ashteadresidents.org.uk. Glynis Peterkin Chairman

COMMUNITY AWARDS In recent months many people in our community have been working long and hard to help those less fortunate than themselves. It was a privilege therefore R giving some recognition last to witness the FRA month to two individuals in Fetcham who have made a real impact in this most difficult of years.

DONATIONS TO SCHOOLS The FRA R has also been very pleased to make some cash donations to our tw t o local schools – Oakfield Junior School in Bell Lane, and to the nearby Fetcham Village Infant School. We presented cheques for £500 to each of the schools, which will help fund resources such as books and other learning equipment.

Our chairman Tim Waller was delighted to present Community Awards to Paul Barker and Tyrone Patterson. Paul has proved to be a truly inspirational volunteer. In March he started Community Coronavirus Care, using Facebook to quickly gather together dozens of like-minded volunteers. He set up a helpline to answer the calls for help from the vulnerable, the house-bound and those whose livelihoods had disappeared almost overnight.

Donating sums such as this has only been possible because of our increased membership this year. So a special ‘thank you’ not just to those of you who renew every year but also to residents who have gone to the trouble of subscribing for the first time. The funds you give us will always go back into the Fetcham community t.

Tyrone Patterson is the proprietor of Greenwise, the greengrocer and café in Fetcham village. He began delivering fresh food boxes in the village and his store became a lifeline for many people who were unable , or too fearful, to shop at the big supermarkets. We heartily thank them both.

VILLAGE PLANTERS The geraniums continued to flower well through September and October, but by the time you read this they will have been replaced by winter pansies, which should take us through to spring next year. It’s been a challenge this summer to maintain the planters, not least in getting them through the dry spells. We are very grateful to Squires of Cobham for kindly supplying this autumn’s batch of plants and compost at a generous discount.

KEEPING UP TO DATE

It’s easy to be cynical and suggest that manufacturers are creating their own consumable market for their product by creating a “life cycle” for their goods. Microsoft, for example, publish their product life cycle to help customers plan better. This can be found on www.docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle/products If you are an Office 2010 user you may be surprised to hear it is coming out of support on 13 Nov 2020. This means no updates, no support and its security will not be current or relevant. Again, you may say this is just manufacture “up-sale talk”. Do you recall very recently there was a huge discrepancy in the incorrect reporting of the daily Covid-19 Virus cases by nearly 16,000 cases? The sole reason for this inaccuracy was because Public Health England used an out dated version of Excel files to collate the figures. The version type they used only had a certain file capacity range of around 65,000 rows. Had they been using the newer file type, this figure is more than a million rows, the daily figures would have been more accurate? It was because of this discrepancy that the figures were misreported by a dramatic amount. We are not saying you have to be filling every corner of your spreadsheets to see these problems, but this was a very real situation.

Microsoft have just announced that if you are using their Office 365 product on a Mac you have to be using the macOS v 10.14 or above, to receive the updates from November onwards To ensure your Windows 10 version is up to-date go to start > settings > update and security > windows updates > then check for updates. In certain situations you may have to install earlier updates before adding the latest version. This process sometimes taking several hours to complete, so be patient! Since March we have seen a huge increase in the requirement to improve the wifi broadband coverage across your home to ensure there is sufficient coverage for all users. A range of products which are based on the mobile phone broadcasting technology called MESH, have provided an easy to install, cost effective solution, which is full expandable to cover the largest of properties. The devices are intended for user installation, so no special tools and tricks are required. As we provide full solutions, we have also “wifi’d” customers gardens, out-houses and pool rooms. Should you have a need of this nature, please do enquire for further details We support thousands of customers – why don’t we support you?

HOME WANTED! Damson & Forest

15 week old Damson (female tortoiseshell) and Forest (male) are looking for a very special home together. They came in as stray kittens from a colony of cats and were around 10 weeks old when they came into care. The progress they have made, particularly Damson, is very impressive and she is growing into a confident and cuddly cat. Forest remains wary and whilst he will happily interact with humans he knows, he is cautious of new situations and people. As a pair they balance each other well and with the right home and some love and patience we are really hopeful Forest will learn to be more trusting. However, we are looking for an understanding home who would be happy to accept him for who he is. They are well on the way to a full physical recovery and now need to take the next step of their journey into their forever home. A full medical history will be provided to any suitable potential adopter. If you feel you can give Damson & Forest their ideal, well deserved forever home please email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk

If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead The Secret Service…

Sewers are a secret service, hidden from view but vital to all our livves. If they didn’t work, society as we know it would rapidly collapse. They have been around in some form since Roman times, with thhe current ones mostly designed and built in the Victorian era. No one o really thinks about them and no one really cares about them. We just flush and forget. Since they were installed the population has increased several times over. In Ashtead, it has gone up from 1,881 in 1901 to 14,169 in the 2011 census. Since the systems were first built, we have also started to put all sorts of different things down the drain and hence into our sewerss. Many of them simply should not be there. Almost all sewers in the UK are gravity driven meaning they slope gently down-hill and flow like a river. The gradient is set to carry pee, poo, paper (the 3 P’s) and water safely to the treatment works, perhaps with a pumping station in between. However, when we put anything else into the drain, for example fats, oil and grease, we risk causing blockages leading to potential environmental catastrophe.

KEEP OUR S EAS PLASTIC ONLY FLUS H PAPER, POO & PEE!

Blocked sewers lead to sewer flooding. Imagine being in your bathroom, having just finished your business and instead of it disappearing it suddenly starts pouring back out. It may have happened p n d tto some m off you – a hhorrendous rr nd experience for any householder. Less visible is the wider impact when sewers flood into the environment. Most UK sewers are designed to overflow through combined sewer overflows (CSOs) as a safety device in case of extreme weather. However, this means untreated sewage flows into water courses. In the case of a blockage this will be concentrated, untreated sewage and may lead to the death of aquatic life in rivers. Flushing anything other than the three P’s, or tipping lots of fats down your kitchen sink can also have extreme consequences. Over time, so-called ‘fat bergs’ can build up, usually in urban areas. These resemble large concrete-like lumps made mostly of fat, held together by a matrix of wet wipes, sanitary towels, tampons and other debris. They block the sewers and cost many thousands to remove. Even wipes that are labelled as “flushable” can cause these problems. They disappear around the U-bend but do not get far. According to an article by SurreyLive in March this year, 700 Guildford sewers had to be cleared in 2019 due to everyday items blocking them. It is vitally important that we think carefully about what goes down our drains and toilets in order to protect the environment. Please only flush the 3 P’s - Pee, Poo and Paper. Also consider what you are putting down your kitchen sink and dispose of oils, fat and grease in the food-waste bin. Look after your sewer and keep The Secret Service in good working order! MOLE VALLEY W.I.

In these very strange and challenging times it was really great to have our first monthly meeting since March in September not in our usual venue but using technology and Zoom. Our president Ann Layman introduced members of the NW Surrey branch of the R.S.P.B. who talked to us on the birds of Surrey. The talk was interesting and entertaining with amazing photos. Having managed this event without too many hiccups we will now be having Zoom meetings every month. The next is California Dreaming. Our subsections have been meeting within the Covid guidelines. Our gardening groups have had to split into two groups, our knit and natter ladies have been

meeting in gardens, our bridge group meet using Zoom and our ramblers have been out most weeks around Bookham Common, Polesden Lacey, Ranmore and Headley Heath. Unfortunately we cannot make any plans for visits currently but will continue to do all we can to make our WI happy and fulfilling. June Webb www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk

Ashtead WIng WI group meet on the second Monday of the month from 8pm to 10pm Currently meeting virtually

Next meeting 9th November 2020

Have you wondered what Ashtead WIng get up to at their member meetings and interest group gatherings? Find out by joining us virtually at our November meeting for an overview of our year of speakers, foodie tastings, favourite books read, crafts made, walks taken place, theatre trips enjoyed and more … ! New members and guests always welcome. If you would like to join this virtual meeting, please send an email us at ashteadwing@gmail.com or visit www.ashteadwing.co.uk

ASHTEAD W.I.

For the September meeting, Ashtead W.I. was very lucky to gather for a ‘live’ meeting, well spaced and extremely safely looked after by our committee. We had an excellent speaker, Marion Dante, on Dropping the Habit, her life as a nun for 34 years. 36 people were able to attend, and despite needing face coverings, everyone could tell we had a lot of smiles going on underneath the masks. However, despite the success of our September meeting in the Hall, Covid-19 has thwarted our plans to hold our normal meetings face to face for a little while. The good news is that we secured another online presenter for our October Zoom meeting. This was Helen Naylor, a member of the City of Westminster Guide Lecturers Association, with her talk entitled ‘The Spirit

of Westminster - Gin from the Slums to the Savoy’ and its many faces & places in between. Of course we were wondering how many of our members might be tempted to have a little tipple while enjoying Helen’s talk! This evening was the 47th birthday of Ashtead W.I. so, perhaps at home we were also able to raise a glass to all these years of a very happy and successful W.I. Our co-President Lilian Baldwin did however, need to send out a warning to everyone about the ever-present online scams as a reminder to us all to be very aware of current threats. It seems that Zooming will be the only way we can hold meetings for a while, so will hope this can be arranged for our November meeting, which will include the AGM. The Arts Society Ashtead – join us on ZOOM We are a thriving Arts Society with a membership of 300, providing stimulating arts-related lectures and cultural visits and tours, at home and abroad. Traditionally our lectures have taken place on the 3rd Tuesday morning of each month at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, but that has not been possible in the present circumstances. Throughout this period we have been keeping in touch with our members through regular newsletters, by email or hand-delivery for those without that facility. Since July we have been staging monthly live online lectures using the ZOOM app, which were enjoyed by many of our members on-screen in the comfort of their own homes. We have viewed lectures on the subjects of Antiques, on an amazing Renaissance lady called Isobella D’Este, and on Rene Lalique’s Art Deco glasswork and jewellery. These were much appreciated by our members who took part.

S R G

Our lecture for November will be: November 17th John Singer Sargent: Much more than a modern Van Dyck by Frank Woodgate On November 13th, we will also be providing access to a “Virtual Tour of Shakespeare’s London” (organised by the East Surrey area of Arts Societies) Although hoping to resume live lectures in the hall as soon as possible, we will continue to provide monthly live online lectures for as long as necessary. In 2021 we are also hoping to organise four visits to places of interest, as well as two cultural tours (to Berlin and to Krakow).

ASHTEAD

For details, see our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk We welcome visitors and new members, who can join in an online lecture for a fee of £5 by sending a request to tas.ashtead@gmail.com.

WE’RE OPEN!!

We are really pleased to announce that Ashtead Library is now open for browsing. Following 2 weeks of click and collect services only, from 1st September we have been allowing customers to come into the library and look for titles from the shelves. A really warm welcome to all of you who have managed to come and visit us since then. We look forward to seeing more of you in the coming months. Come and collect your books Currently reservations are free so if you do not want to browse you can order on-line and just come and collect your books and issue them in the normal way. If on-line is not your thing we have a new service called “Ready Reads”. You can email or ring us to request books for you. If you give us an idea of what sort of book you would like, we will select the books, issue them and they can be collected with no fuss from a trolley near the entrance.
