Despite the difficulties this year has brought us all, the festive season is a time so many of us look forward to, and we really do hope that some restrictions will be lifted over the Christmas period to enable families to be together. But, if we are unable to meet up with all of our loved ones, enjoying a virtual Christmas catch up, or a long phone call filled with love and laughter will mean the world. For many elderly folk, the techie options may not be available, so do think about any elderly neighbours you may have, living alone, especially at this time. A phone call on Christmas morning could make their day … or even a small Christmas gift left on their doorstep could really lift their spirts. It’s not about a fancy big expensive gift, but rather a sign that someone cares. At the time of writing, England is in a second national lockdown, but most businesses are much better prepared than the first time around. Thankfully, our local tradespeople are on the whole, able to carry on working safely with social distancing and in many cases, PPE. Your support for them is greatly appreciated. Once this lockdown has lifted and we are able to venture out to local retailers, hairdressers, beauty, leisure, hotels, pubs and restaurants again, they will all be more than ready to welcome you back! There has been much personal loss and anxiety this year, and it is important that our communities continue to pull together to help each other and those that are vulnerable. One thing that has become apparent is that 2020 has been a year for learning to appreciate what we have. We send our love and thoughts to everyone this Christmas and wish you a very Happy New Year, thank you so much for your continued support, see you in 2021! With Warmest Seasons Greetings,

Do I need a Will? While the answer is anyone over the age of 18 should have a Will, for the reasons discussed in our previous article Why make a Will? in October’s issue of A&L Local, there is arguably a case for asking: do you need a Will; is it essential? You own a property
suchasyourparents, siblings, nephews, nieces or cousins. You may want to know this will happen on your death, rather than being reliant on your spouse’s Will (if they have one) doing this for you on their death; otherwise their blood relatives will inherit on your spouse’s death and nothing that was once yours will pass to your side of the family. You have children
Solely Ifyouownapropertyinyoursolename, youneedaWillto ensurethiscanbedealtwithefficientlyonyourdeath. Eveniftheequityisminimal;duetoyourmortgage, youstillwanttoappointtherightpeopletodealwith maintainingit, sellingit, clearingthemortgageand distributingtheequitytothepeopleyouwanttoreceiveit. Jointly If you own the property as joint tenants, the surviving joint owner will solely own the property on your death; so, if you are the survivor, you become the sole owner and need a Will for the reasons above. If you own the property as tenants in common, having a Will means you can choose to leave your interest to your co-owner, or to other people of your choosing. You have savings After someone has died, most banks and building societies will only release funds above a certain level (typically £15,000) on presentation of a grant of representation. This is a much easier process for your family to navigate if there is aWill. You are married Ifyouaremarried, butdonothavechildren, andyoudie withoutaWill, yourspousewouldreceiveyourentireestate. Youmaywantsomemoneytogotootherfamilymembers,
Whether you are married or not, if you have children a Will is the only way to provide for them in the way you think appropriate, at the time you think appropriate. If you are married and have children, without a Will, your children may receive assets on your death, when you may wish everything to go to your spouse. Equally, you may want your children to receive more or less than the rules set out. If you are not married to your partner and have children, unless you have a Will, anything in your sole name will pass to your children.Your partner may not receive anything, subject to what you own jointly and how you own it together. You have significant assets In this case, how the rules on intestacy (the rules that apply to distribute someone’s estate on their death when there is noWill) operate are rarely efficient in terms of InheritanceTax and, if you have assets that exceed £325,000 in value, it is worth having aWill to make sure that there are no nasty tax surprises for your loved ones. AtTWM, our expert Private Client team are here to help you and we offer an initial consultation with no obligation to proceed, so that we can discuss with you the things you should consider and help you think about your choices and options. If you need advice, please get in touch and we will be pleased to assist.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
It is at this time of the year that we advise residents of the festive activities about to take place in Ashtead. However, as we all know, Christmas will be a rather different experience this year, particularly as we reflect upon the past nine months. Unfortunately, there will be no Christmas Shopping Evening in The Street which is so disappointing since it is an opportunity for folk to enjoy the generous hospitality of our local shop keepers and other business people. On the other hand, let us take time to reflect upon how well we have been looked after during these troubled times. The butchers, the bakers, the greengrocers and all the other shops and hospitality venues have been open every day as permitted; no shortages in Ashtead. Therefore, it is even more important to shop locally throughout the festive season, and beyond, to meet our household needs. And here we have some Good News:Shopping locally for Christmas gifts will be easier than ever this year with Mole Valley District car parks being free of charge for the three festive weekends in December. A real incentive to support your local businesses and enjoy what our village has to offer. Every Mole Valley car park will be free of charge on 5th/6th, 12th/13th & 19th/20th December. The parking machines will be signed to show the free parking dates, but the machines cannot be turned off. Any money inserted, or paid using the RingGo App will be donated to the MVDC Chairman’s three charities: the Leatherhead Youth Project, Belong and PSDS. 10 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2020
Also, we are sorry to report there will be no Scouts Christmas card post this year. Last year over 1,350 cards were collected and delivered in Ashtead generating nearly £500. In total, the Epsom Scouts raised over £2,500 in 2019 and sadly they will be out of pocket by around this amount this year — a decrease in fundraising opportunities that is a reality for charities up and down the country. For as long as anyone can remember the Woodfield Entertainers have provided laughter and fun to young and old alike with their Christmas Pantomime at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall. Sadly, that cannot take place this year but the Woodies have plans to stage it in 2021. During perhaps the most challenging year that many of us have experienced in our lifetime, we are once again indebted to the outstanding help provided by our team of Road Stewards. With their dedication to the ARA our newsletter Ashtead Village News has been delivered to members and the annual subscriptions collected. Thank you all so much for your support which we extend to our members. As the year draws to a close, our Chairman and Standing Committee wish all the residents of Ashtead a very Merry Christmas, a Christmas that we hope can be celebrated with family and friends. And here’s to a truly healthy and peaceful New Year that holds some hope for a return to our normal lives. Roger Bennett Planning Office

A QUIETER CHRISTMAS Despite the restrictions the FRA remains committed to bringing some sparkle to the village this December. Our regular Christmas event, along with our popular Santa’s Grotto, cannot take place. But we still have a handsome tree, thanks to Squires at Stoke D’Abernon, and it is being generously hosted once again by Harringtons. Our planters are also lit up thanks to the efforts of our Brighter Fetcham team. The absence of a public event caused us to try and think of new ways in which we could help the community. Care home residents have been facing particular issues around seeing their families and loved ones. So we have been in touch with the Bellsgrove care home in the village, and they told us that Tablet computers for communicating with friends and family would indeed be very welcome. We have therefore used FRA funds to source two additional 10-inch Tablets for residents’ use, and the staff have assured us that they will be on hand to assist the less technically confident. We are also working this Christmas with those who are providing food supplies to the many families and individuals
who have suffered sudden and unexpected losses of income. LAND AT FETCHAM SPRINGS Our autumn Newsletter, delivered free to all residents, highlighted one of the less well known aspects of the field known as Fetcham Springs, between Raymead Way and the Mill Pond. We are grateful to Professor Patricia Wiltshire, a hugely experienced forensic ecologist (and also an Independent Councillor in Ashtead) for pointing out the area of fen, or wet woodland, in the north of the site. She describes this as a ‘rare habitat’ worthy of more investigation. We sincerely hope that SES Water, which owns the land, will facilitate this in the coming months. Pockets of land such as this are unusual within our built-up area, and learning more about its biodiversity can only be a good thing. SUBSCRIPTIONS It’s not too late to renew your subscription for this year and to give us your email address so we can keep you informed. HOME WANTED! Chloe
Chloe is an adorable mature female tabby who came into care because (for no apparent reason) her owner no longer wanted her. She spent most of her time outside and was unkempt; her fur was in a bad state. As you can see, with some much deserved TLC her fur is back to normal and she is a beautiful cat. Despite her previous neglect she is so gentle and is a bit of a ‘purr machine’. She loves being stroked and brushed; she simply loves being loved. She would be an ideal companion for an older person. If you feel you could give Chloe the loving home she absolutely deserves, please call Sue on 0208 390 3165. or email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to www.justgiving.com/Epsom-Cats-Protection

FIND YOUR WIRELESS HAPPY…. We appreciate this Christmas may not be a frantic as some due to current circumstances, but this is no reason to suffer poor and slow wifi connection, yes this could be upstairs in the kids bedrooms or in the study. There is a product which is low in cost, simple to install, works brilliantly and offers some really useful features-which really makes you ask “why did I not do this before?” The specific product I am referring to is the TP Link Deco E4 - 3 pack and costs just £160.00 As its name implies the kit consists of 3 units (transmitters), one unit plugs into your router with the other two units linking between themselves, usually they are positioned in areas near where you have signal weaknesses. phone/tablet app, which helps you setup the units quickly, and offers many useful facilities like “bedtime” mode, which turns the wifi off at predetermined times and days of the week, you also can setup different Wifi active times for different devices, for example your 10 year old child can only have wifi access until 7pm where as your 16 year old child’s device can have access until 10pm. The system uses “MESH” technology and this in short means that as you move between different areas the transmitters cover, the transmitter with the stronger signal will take your connection to ensure you always have the strongest and most resilient connection. This also means you have the same wifi network covering the whole property, making the connection of devices much simpler. We have sold many of these units and have been impressed with how simple they are to setup by many non technical home users - usually they are up and running within 10 minutes. We best recommend the use of the free smart
With some of the apps you can also “content control”. This can block access to unsuitable websites from specific devices by category like “adult content” or “firearms content”. You also can specify specific websites you may want to block by typing in the website address. Should you require any further help of information on this product, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Is it just me?
‘…but if I stop flying/ driving/ eating meat, what difference will it make?’ Have you ever heard that as a reason for not taking personal action on climate change? It sounds reasonable, since there are over 7 billion people on the planet and you’d think the actions of one individual would have about as much effect as trying to empty a swimming pool with a teaspoon. But there is a very good reason why you are far more influential than you think you are… It may seem counter-intuitive but homo sapiens is a very cooperative species. We live in families, groups and cultures where we support each other, share resources and exchange ideas. It’s these traits that have led to us developing all sorts of technologies, some good, some less good. And it’s because of our social style of living that we need to get on with each other and ‘fit in.’ It can be embarrassing if we make a ‘faux pas’ in public. It’s these feelings that nudge us towards being ‘socially acceptable.’ Children learn all manner of social behaviours from their parents. Teenagers want to be part of their peer group and signal this by dressing in a similar way. And even adults adopt the norms of their social groups, whether they know it or not. It’s important to be aware of agencies that try to manipulate how our social brains work for their own ends - for example, advertisers, political campaigners, bloggers, online sales companies, writers in Local publications (!) But some social influences can be very positive. Customers at a US cafe who were told that 30% of Americans had started eating less meat were twice as likely to order a meatless lunch. An online survey showed that of the respondents who know someone who had given up flying because of climate change, half of them said they flew less as a result. Households are more likely to install solar panels in neighbourhoods that already have them. Community organisers trying to encourage people to install solar panels were 62% more successful in their efforts if they had panels in their own houses. Social scientists think this sort of effect happens because we constantly evaluate what our peers are doing and we adjust our beliefs and actions accordingly. When we see our neighbours taking environmental action, like conserving energy, we assume that people like ourselves also value sustainability and are more likely to act. Which brings me back to emptying pools with a teaspoon…when we do things individually to preserve the health of our planet, the result can have a domino effect. It becomes less like bailing out with a teaspoon and more like finding the rope attached to the plug that blocks the pipe that drains the pool and getting friends and neighbours to help you heave it out. What may start with a trickle can then build to a torrent if we all pull together. So it isn’t just you! ASHTEAD W.I. November is AGM month for Ashtead W.I. so had to be carried out differently this year, with much extra work for our Committee, needing to send President’s, Treasurer’s and Secretary’s reports out online, as well as by post to members who weren’t able to zoom with us. However, we’re very pleased that our co-Presidents Lilian and Marilyn are willing to stay in post, and welcomed Janice Smith to our Committee, as sadly Helen Steel needed to step down. It’s good to know that Helen will still be looking after us in future with her wonderful cakes. Our thanks to Amanda Edge of Bookham Belles WI who looked after our voting papers. Harry Styles and Emily Turner were our online speakers, both from the Cyber Awareness & Security Team of a leading bank, giving us details of really useful tips and they stressed our need to maintain security to avoid the many online scams from the UK and overseas. Particularly noted
were separate and very strong passwords, saving our work, 2 factor authentication, and updating devices. Traps to lure us in were The Emotional, The Urgent, Topical, Unusual and Unsettling calls, so hopefully we can be aware of all these if they come. There was a lighter finish to our evening when two of our members showed us some delightful crafts which had been occupying them over lockdown, perhaps giving us ideas of things to try in future. Our next meeting will be on the 16th December, still zoomed, but we are encouraged to dress for the occasion — all things bright and festive! More info can be found on: www.ashteadWI.co.uk
FROM SANDRA BROWN
Fetcham W.I.
Since our last Meeting in March we have kept in contact with our Members via emails, phone calls, and Newsletter, and can’t wait to meet up again sometime in the New Year. Thanks to Karen and Pat we now have a website: www. fetchamvillagewi.btck.co.uk and look forward to adding forthcoming events and attractions, a selection of speakers, and generally introducing an online access to Fetcham Village W.I.
An important milestone is that we have decided to take the opportunity of an afternoon slot for future Meetings, and think that this may well attract ladies who do not like to go out of an evening. When we are able to resume the new time and date will be the second Thursday of the month (except August) at 1.30 – 3:30 pm in Fetcham Village Hall. If already interested, and would like to have a chat, please contact Mrs. Maureen Webb, President 01372 842498 Meanwhile, we send you seasonal greetings and wish you health and happiness in the year ahead.

MOLE VALLEY W.I. November is annual meeting month for WIs and forty members joined our Zoom meeting. Online voting for committee and president had already taken place with Jill Jackson of Bookham Butterflies acting as teller and there are no changes. Meriel Sexton reported back on the interesting Farm to Fork talk by Ian Jones from Hill House Farm arranged by the Surrey Federation. In March Ian was in despair as the lockdown meant he could no longer do his usual business to hotels and restaurants. His wife stepped in and together they started a successful online delivery service. There are more SFWI online events coming up including a Blue Badge guided tour of St Paul’s Cathedral. Sue Scott was thanked for laying our poppy wreath on Remembrance Sunday. We then went on to the business of the meeting and reports from our treasurer, president and secretaries.
It is amazing how during very difficult times we have achieved so much while always adhering to Covid guidelines. We then held a quiz again the first one on Zoom. We will be having Zoom meetings for the foreseeable future and have a Christmas musical event in December. June Webb www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk
