I do hope you manage to celebrate the festive season safely, or in fact managed to celebrate safely, depending on when you are reading this, and although it’s been different for many of us this year, I hope that you still had a lovely time. A quiet festive break is anticipated for us all here at ‘Team Look Local’ and we are very much looking forward to having our “Works Christmas meal” as soon as it is safe to do so in the New Year. We certainly have much to catch up on, having not actually been in the same room for about a year! It will also be wonderful to welcome back our lovely Look Local designer Kirsty in January, after 9 months of maternity leave, following the safe arrival of baby Ayla. There will certainly be big celebrations when we finally get back together! I for one, can’t wait to get that vaccine! Hopefully by the time this magazine hits your door mat, many of you will be ready to have your shots and looking forward to life starting to feel a bit more normal again! We certainly can’t wait to have a good selection of events and meetings to include in our pages once again. Let’s keep everything crossed and please do, watch this space! In the meantime, we are delighted to bring you a great selection of local businesses and services for you to tap into as required. Your continued support is, I know, very much appreciated by all our advertisers who never fail to amaze me with their enthusiasm and keenness to serve our local communities. Here’s wishing them all an easier and prosperous 2021. We wish you, our fabulous readers, a great month and a wonderful New Year too. So until we return next time… Warmest Regards,

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OF THE YEAR 2019
To all of our lovely customers (existing and potential)… What a year we’ve all just experienced and I mean it when I say I hope this message finds you well. Most of 2020 has been an unsettling and unprecedented time for us all and I wish you, your families and friends the very best of health through the festive period and on into 2021. I would like to thank every single one of our customers for their support throughout the year, whether it’s just words of encouragement, a visit and a chat or a purchase made when the opportunity arose. When I started Amanda aged 18 many years ago I set out to offer exemplary customer service, this I like to think I have achieved and maintained since, and is something seldom seen on the high street today. I truly believe a combination of real personal service with first hand knowledge about our stock, enabling you to choose the perfect outfit, combined with the labels and collections we offer have enabled us to outlive the very big names that have fallen in womenswear retail recently. Please continue to support us in the future, without you —our customers— we could not survive, and if you’ve never ventured through the door before please give us a try. Our friendly staff are there to help and advise, or if you would prefer, leave you to browse at your leisure. Despite the challenges 2020 has thrown at us we have some exciting news and developments for 2021 - but more about that in the New Year. To be amongst the first to know more, if you have not already done so, please subscribe to our email newsletter - we won’t inundate you with emails, just a few each year — and you can always unsubscribe at any time. Just visit www.amandafashions.co.uk and scroll to the bottom of the page and fill in the very simple form. At the time of writing, our doors are open and we look forward to seeing you in the shop. If there’s anything we can help you with, feel free to call or email us. All that is left for me to say is, stay safe, fit and healthy, enjoy Christmas as far as possible, I hope that you do manage to see family and friends, and here’s to beating Covid 19 in 2021. Mandy Dawson and the whole team at Amanda. P.S. I almost forgot to say…

Wills Guide: The role of an executor and who to choose Executors are those named in a Will who are responsible for administering the estate of someone who passes away. This is a hugely responsible role and it is well worth giving careful thought and consideration as to who you think will have the ability, time, and is willing to accept the responsibility of this role. What surprises most people is that you do not need the consent of the person you choose to name as an executor in your Will. Certainly it is sensible to speak to those you wish to appoint in this role to make sure they are happy to take up the appointment as, otherwise, when the time comes, they could step back from the appointment. What does the executor have to do? The executor has the responsibility of dealing with the entire estate administration to distribution. It can be a demanding role involving not only practical issues, but can also involve complex financial/tax transactions. An executor can be held personally liable and there are strict timescales to adhere to, particularly with regard to the payment of tax and submission ofTax Returns. Furthermore, the executor may also have a dual role as aTrustee, particularly if there are minor or vulnerable beneficiaries, so the duties and responsibilities may run for many years. Who to choose? It is sensible to choose more than one executor so that the responsibility can be shared. You should consider having a substitute executor named, so they can step in if one of your first named executors is unable to act. Often, parents wish to choose their adult children as executors, but should bear in mind that they may find the responsibility too much at a time when they
have suffered a bereavement. Another consideration is if there has been, or may potentially be, any friction between children, then it would not be sensible to appoint them, as they will be required to work closely together throughout the administration and reach many unanimous decisions - which, at a time of bereavement, could cause additional stress and place pressure on possibly already delicate relationships. You should also consider the age of the person(s) you wish to appoint. If they are a similar age to you or older, then they may be in their latter years and in ill health at the point of your death. Consider also whether the person(s) is going to have the time to devote to the role. If they lead a busy family and/or working life, then it is probably not going to be sensible to appoint them. What are the benefits of appointing a solicitor as my executor? Due to the responsibility of the role, and to take the burden from your loved ones, you may wish to consider appointing a professional executor to handle the administration and as the point of contact for your family and beneficiaries. The further benefits are that they will have on hand expertise to handle all aspects of the administration, including acting asTrustees if required. They will also make certain that time limits are adhered to for maximising tax savings for claims of relief, in relation to the sale of property and shares. They will also be able to advise on potential Deeds of Variation to mitigate inheritance tax. AtTWM, our expert Private Client team are here to help you and we offer an initial consultation with no obligation to proceed, so that we can discuss with you the things you should consider and help you think about your choices and options. If you need advice, please get in touch and we will be pleased to assist.

SHOPPERS IN COLD WEATHER BRING WARMTH & CHEER TO CHRISTMAS SALE Readers will recall, from our page in the November edition, that the LRA was set to use one of the barrows in the Swan Centre on 12th November to sell “pre-loved “ Christmas decorations for charity. Alas, lockdown descended upon us and we had to postpone the sale. However as soon as lockdown ended we resurrected our plans and had two sales, one on Thursday 3rd and then again on Saturday 5th December. The weather on Thursday 3rd was appalling, but being situated under the roof canopy next to Boots front doors, the barrow was at least out of the rain. “Comfort breaks” and hot coffee offered by the Swan Centre Management Offices were gratefully accepted by the LRA helpers. Saturday 5th was considerably better weather, but even then, standing in the open for a good portion of a day at this time of year is certainly not for the faint-hearted! In contrast to the cold weather, the reception from the public on both days was most warm and welcoming, and virtually all of the stock was sold. The fact that the proceeds were going to homelessness charities no doubt caused more people to stop, and certainly receipts were much enhanced by many customers declining their change or making outright donations. As a result, total takings were £310.
This money, together with a donation from the LRA Allen Memorial Fund, will be given to the two charities selected: The Meeting Room, Graham Peddie’s organisation (ex PitStop), long term helper of the homeless, providing Christmas Dinners for many homeless and distressed people; and Leatherhead Start, managed by Angela Carter, which houses local homeless adults, providing them support to regain stability and move on to more independent accommodation. Sylvia Harper, who read our last month’s A&LL page, has donated many bright & cheerful outdoor decoration installations, and her friend Monica Bond gave us a 6-foot artificial Christmas tree which we were able to pass on to Leatherhead Start. Thanks to these ladies and to Look Local for enabling these connections to occur with their publication. LRA would also like to thank the Swan Centre Management for use of their barrow, table and support in setting up our stall, and of course, especially all those generous shoppers who bought decorations and made donations. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
THE MOST MISUSED PHRASES IN THE MODERN WORLD I am sure we could all think of several contenders: Track and Trace is one that springs immediately to mind but my ‘favourite’ is New and Improved! Consider, for example, the new and improved Epsom traffic system, and the new and improved phasing of traffic lights. Being of a certain age, I speak from experience when I say that nothing gets easier, except perhaps, for some, the afternoon nap. In the ever renewing and improving world of managing our finances electronically, we have to remember a PIN to get access to our cash, and then, having put away the non-electronic scrap of paper on which it is scrawled, we have to hide what we are doing from the cameras in the sky. Looking at our bank statements online gets harder as we have to jump through more electronic security hoops to prove we are who we say we are. Please don’t think I am a Luddite; I just don’t want to fix things that aren’t broken. Standing Orders are a good example: with just one instruction, electronic or written, you can set up your £2.50 ARA annual membership subscription to be paid on 1st February each year and then not have to remember it again! There are advantages to this almost forgotten mode of payment for all concerned: a) You will not be in danger of forgetting whether you have paid or not, so, ‘just to be on the safe side, better pay now’ i.e. twice. b) Your hardworking Road Stewards will know, before they deliver our publications, that they don’t need to trouble you for the cash you probably don’t have to hand as we all did in pre-contactless payment days and, in the present pandemic climate, you won’t have to risk opening your front door to a caller. c) The Association will have a better idea of how many newsletters to print, thus saving money and waste.
Some will ask why we don’t use Direct Debits. The reason is the charge that the banks impose, which for a £2.50 payment is simply not acceptable. ARA’s Road Stewards have done a magnificent job this year, and have managed to collect about 70% of our expected income (as at 7th November) but our changed environment means the move away from cash has really accelerated, and about 400 members have paid online this time. The difficulty with that in a ‘normal’ year would be the random nature of the dates that payments are made, which leaves Road Stewards uncertain as to their road’s current position and the Membership Secretary firing emails off to them several times a week. So, do please consider setting up a Standing Order payable on 1st February, making sure your reference is in the correct format: Sort Code: 30-80-33 Account No.: 19412868 Account Name: Ashtead Residents’ Association Reference format: Your house name/number and postcode The 2021 Census Speaking of opening your door to a caller, this is an early alert that the 2021 census will take place on 21st March 2021. Community Engagement Teams will be going door to door to ascertain that you are set up to complete the census online, whether you prefer to complete a paper copy or whether you need any assistance. More details to come in the New Year. And finally To end with another 3-word phrase, which we hope, with the arrival of vaccines, is not an inappropriate one: ‘Happy New Year’ to you all. Tony Mansell Membership Secretary

Looking ahead If there was ever a year when we wish to look ahead to better times, then 2021 is surely it. But as any driving instructor will tell you, a brief glance in the rear view mirror isn’t a bad idea too. Amid the hardship and headlines of the pandemic, ‘community and locality’ are themes that have come to the fore. As a community organisation the FRA finds this very welcome. Many people have been moved to volunteer in ways that the pessimists about modern life would never have imagined. Community Coronavirus Care (for which the FRA gave its founder Paul Barker a much deserved Community Award) is simply one example. Others took to their sewing machines to make PPE. Shops and restaurants went above and beyond on behalf of their customers. People knocked on the doors of elderly neighbours and we drove our cars a lot less. So if in 2020 you found yourself ‘tuning in’ to local affairs, and ‘tuning out’ from the London commute (or commuting anywhere) please carry this with you into 2021. Subscriptions and support for the FRA
grew substantially in the past year and this will help us continue to stand up for Fetcham. The ‘in tray’ has rarely been fuller. We have further representations to make over the writing of Mole Valley Council’s Local Plan. In particular, making sure that the wildlife-rich open space of Fetcham Springs is conserved for future generations. We will be doing all we can to support the Greenhouse project in Cock Lane - the most exciting community building scheme in the village for many years. We will be continuing to make the case for enhanced GP services in the village, together with the revitalised Molebridge Practice in Cannonside. And we will be pressing for a greater say on which of our roads should be re-surfaced, and when, by Surrey County Council. So there’s much to do, but we can’t step into 2021 without expressing our thanks to the FRA Events team for organising the Christmas trees and lights in the village this past month. Fingers crossed we can look forward to seeing Santa back next December!

THE ARTS SOCIETY ASHTEAD Here’s wishing you a Happy 2021 and hoping that it will be a very different year to 2020, eventually ASHTEAD returning to something approaching normality t.
Our online lecture for January 2021 will be:
The Field of Cloth of Gold by Jo Mabbutt
We are a thriving society with a membership of 300, providing stimulating arts-related lectures and cultural visits and tours. Normally our lectures have taken place on the 3rd Tuesday morning of each month at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, but that has not been possible in the present circumstances. Throughout this period, we have been keeping in touch with our members through regular newsletters, by email or hand-delivery for those without that facility. Since July, using the Zoom app, we have been screening monthly online lectures, as well as providing access to some “Virtual Tours“ of places of interest. These were enjoyed by many of our members on-screen in the comfort of their own homes.
26 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JANUARY 2021
In 2021, depending on the applicable regulations, we are hoping to organise four visits to places of interest, as well as two cultural tours (to Berlin and to Krakow). For details, see our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk We welcome visitors and new members, who can join in an online lecture for a fee of £5 by sending a request to tas.ashtead@gmail.com.

moroccan-style tray-baked chicken ingredients 1 large onion, sliced 2 garlic cloves, sliced ½ lemon, thinly sliced (knobbly end discarded) 400g can chick peas, drained & rinsed 350g carrots, halved or quartered lengthways (or left whole if they’re small) 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Bart Blends Ras El Hanout 8 British chicken thighs, trimmed of excess fat Handful flat leaf parsley leaves Handful coriander leaves 4 tbsp natural yogurt (Serves 4)
method 1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Place the onion, garlic, lemon, chick peas and carrots over the base of a large roasting tin. Sprinkle with the oil and scatter with ½ the ras el hanout. Season and toss together to coat. Arrange the chicken thighs on top of the vegetables. Season the skin and sprinkle with the remaining ½ tbsp ras el hanout. 2. Roast for 25 minutes, then lift the chicken from the pan and toss all the vegetables. Return the chicken, baste with the juices and roast for another 15-20 minutes until golden. Ensure the juices run clear and there is no pink meat. 3. Scatter the chicken and carrots with the herbs, and serve with the yogurt, plus some couscous or flatbread, if liked.
cooking tip Ras el hanout is a Moroccan blend that works a treat in chicken dishes. It includes black pepper, ginger, coriander, smoked paprika, allspice, cardamom, mace, nutmeg, turmeric, cayenne, cloves and rose petals!

How has the Ashtead Rotary Club coped in 2020 during this period of pandemic? Very positively is the summary as we continued to hold weekly meetings every Thursday at 8pm on Zoom, albeit without the pleasure of socialising in the Cock Inn at Headley. We have enjoyed many fascinating speakers both of general interest and those representing charities we donate to. The main misfortune has been the cancellation of Ashtead Village Day which is our main source of the income we deploy in supporting both local and international charities – typically £20,000. Village Day is of course also a great opportunity for the many local organisations to fundraise and indeed for everyone to come together. Fortunately through prudent financial management we have kept some reserves from the good years and hope to make donations just over half of our normal giving.
Rotary. A separate donation has already been made by the Club. Many other charities have been helped and the Christmas Street Collections went ahead in December in the village. One excitement is the news that in February we will be celebrating the foundation of this club 40 years ago. Ten individuals who are also celebrating their 40th birthday next year were able to obtain a matching £100 for their chosen charity
A few of our Rotary initiatives in 2020: ‘Shop Local’ and ‘Fiver Fest’ both of which boosted local shops in Ashtead at a difficult time. We launched a Just Giving campaign for the Beirut disaster which is still running but with an expectation of raising up to £1000 from the public which will be matched by
Finally we welcomed a new team of club officers in July – pictured left. Date of Ashtead Rotary Village Day 2021 is Saturday 12th June. For more information about Ashtead Rotary Club – how to help us and how we distribute our charitable giving, please look at our website or email our Secretary on ashteadrotary@gmail.com Brian Griffin 42 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JANUARY 2021

Many local clubs are presently not operating. That’s not the case with Ashtead Probus! Catching up via Zoom during lockdown 1 with members we hadn’t seen for a few months demonstrated that the technology g was a viable method of keeping the club going and our programme of talks was reactivated. These have since covered The trial of Penguin Books (for publishing Lady Chatterley’s Lover), the story of The Great Exhibition 1851, the origins and history of gin in the UK, an insight into what lies beneath the streets of London, the life of Ernest Shackl k eton and what happened on the ill-fated Endurance expedition, rounding off the year with the history and highlights of Kew Gardens.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead New Year’s Resolutions/ Revolutions! utions!
I think we are all getting increasingly aware of and concerned about climatee change. I recently read What we need to do now for a zero-carbon future by Chris Goodall. It’s firmly based on science and is a plan to get the UK to neet zero, including some changes we can make personally. Here are some of theem.
1
Homes account for about 15% of the UK’s emissions, mostly through burning gas in central heating boilers. Improving insulation is the best and a cheapest thing that will keep you warm but cut your gas bill. Make sure youur loft has between 250-270mm of snug lagging. Fit insulating strips around badly fitting exterior doors and use a thick curtain on a swing pole to stop drafts; plug any air leaks from unused fireplaces or draughty skirting boardss. Turn down the thermostat (and put on an extra jumper!) Turn off radiators in unused rooms. Switch to a renewable electricity supplier.
2
Cars create 16% of UK’s emissions - so drive less and walk/cycle insteadd if you can. Public transport and car sharing are a particular challenge with the current Covid pandemic but hopefully by next summer we will be able to do both safely. In 1990 transport was one fifth of the UK’s domesticc greenhouse gas emissions but it has now increased to one third. This is in spite pite of the increase in sales of electric cars and better fuel efficiency. Some of the growth is due to increased SUV ownership. If you have to buy a new car get an electric one if you can afford it, but it’s greener to keep your existing car while it’s still working. And don’t buy an SUV!
3
Flying adds a further 7% to the UK’s emissions. Shockingly, the UK has the highest number of international air-travellers, 8.6% of the world’s total, 126.2 million passengers every year. Resolve not to take short breaks by air – hen or stag do’s, parties and weddings all encourage large groups to take short flights. Just as much fun can be had in the UK and it would help our economy recover. Trains and ferries are a comfortable and more interesting way to travel.
4
Food production generates a quarter of the world’s emissions. Eating meat is a significant issue. Beef has the highest impact closely followed by lamb and imported shellfish. The production of 1Kg of beef releases 25Kgs of greenhouse gases. Switching to a more plant-based diet is probably the single most effective way to significantly reduce your carbon footprint.
5
Fashion accounts for about 3-4% of the UK’s carbon footprint. The average Briton buys 18kgs of clothes each year causing almost half a tonne of greenhouse gas pollution. Virtually no clothing is fully recyclable and very little is used for a second time. There are no easy solutions apart from us all buying fewer clothes and wearing them for longer, so consider hiring or sharing especially for special occasions.
