So answer me this, why is it that the summer always feels so much shorter than the winter? Maybe it’s because there is so much going on locally to fill our days and keep us busy, who knows! Once again the Leatherhead Lions Donkey Derby will be held at Polesden Lacey. This is a fabulous family day out with so much going on. Proceeds will go to local charities; this year they will be focused on Local Youth Projects, such as Leatherhead Youth Project, Scouts & Guides and Ashtead Youth Club. More details within. We hear from Mole Valley District Council that they are putting forward Dorking and Leatherhead’s Historic High Streets for the opportunity to receive funding through Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zones scheme. Find out about that on page 20. In other news from MVDC, and in conjunction with Ashtead Tennis Club, we are delighted to hear that there is a new defibrillator at the club. A potentially life saving piece of equipment and certainly reassuring to have in place. The Leatherhead Theatre celebrate their 50th anniversary and invite you to join their ‘Picnic on the Plaza’ on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th August. There will be performers and musicians to enjoy, so why not pack your lunch, grab a deck-chair from your shed and join in the fun! Let’s hope the sun shines! As well as all this, The Swan Centre in Leatherhead will be hosting a selection of ‘Fun Days’ throughout August; ‘Magic Mondays’ and ‘Terrific Tuesdays’ with performances at set times throughout the day, details can be found within. There will also be Arts & Craft tables and Sand and Water play. How lovely, I’m sure these will prove to be very popular and will be much enjoyed. I wish you all a wonderful month, until next time, take care...

Making sure you get the most of your personal annual tax exemptions Local expert Joanna Soteriou at TWM Solicitors explains why now is a good time to review the annual tax exemptions available to you as an individual. Giving thought to how best to use your annual tax exemptions now means that later in the year, you can benefit from all the appropriate exemptions and reliefs that are available to you. You will avoid having to rush things when 5 April looms, or worse, finding then that you are not in a position to make the most of your tax free allowances.

• ensuring you fully utilise the ISA allowance of £20,000, as you will not pay Income Tax on the income or Capital Gains Tax on any gains generated by the assets held within the ISA going forward

You may have seen reports that the Office of Tax Simplification are recommending a review of the current annual Inheritance tax allowances. This is because the allowances are considered by many to be overly complex, therefore it is important to be aware of what they currently are, how they apply to you and whether you can utilise them.

• contributing £3,600 per year to a stakeholder pension for each of your children or grandchildren, irrespective of their earnings and whether they are employed and/or

In terms of Inheritance Tax planning, you can make use of: • your annual gift exemption of £3,000 (plus a further £3,000 if you did not use that exemption last year) • the small gifts exemption of £250 per individual • the marriage exemption: this is £5,000 for a child, £2,500 for a grandchild or great-grandchild and £1,000 for anyone else • charity exemption on gifts to charity and/or • normal gifts out of your surplus income. Looking at Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax, this could be:

• placing the Junior ISA allowance of £4,368 into a Junior ISA for each of your minor children or grandchildren

• transferring assets to your spouse if they are subject to Income Tax at a lower rate. Needless to say, tax is not the only thing to consider when you are giving assets to children or grandchildren or transferring assets between you and your spouse. It is a good time to review your income and expenditure needs in later life, and also to consider the impact any gifting or ownership changes will have in relation to your estate on death and the terms of your Will. We offer free Will review appointments and can discuss with you the basics of any gifting for Inheritance Tax planning purposes at that meeting. Any tailored advice that may also cover Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax would be charged based on providing a report for an agreed fixed charge following an initial informationgathering meeting.

MOLEBRIDGE GP SURGERY - The withdrawal of the application to close Fetcham’s only remaining GP surgery is very welcome news. The Molebridge practice had said that its Cannonside surgery was no longer financially viable, and it wanted to concentrate its services in Leatherhead. The Fetcham Residents Association made its strong opposition to the plans very clear, in meetings and in a letter to Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group, which needed to approve any closure plan. The Molebridge practice says it will be working with the CCG to ensure it can serve local patients, now and in the future. However, we are not complacent. We hope there is now a breathing space to tackle the underlying issues which led to the closure plan. The FRA also hopes that this is an opportunity to look again at the longer term needs of our growing, and ageing, population. SPEED CALMING - We had a very constructive meeting in mid-June with an officer from Surrey County Council to discuss the proposals for a 20mph e

O

speed limit, and enforcement measures, in Bell Lane and School Lane. There is widespread support for the scheme, which is designed to reduce average speeds in the vicinity of Oakfield School and the village Infants School. However, we did want to ensure that the road tables proposed for Bell Lane will be sited in the most effective places, and surface water drainage will be adequate. It is possible that by the time of publication, the roadworks needed to implement the scheme will be underway. We are grateful to Surrey Highways for taking the trouble to meet us on site and answer our queries. MEMBERSHIP - We are only as strong as our membership, and we thank everyone who has renewed their FRA membership this year. Although our very modest subs were due on April 1, it is certainly not too late to either join for the first time, or to renew. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Recycling in Mole Valley All recycling collected in Mole Valley is taken to Grundon’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Leatherhead where it is separated manually into glass, paper and the different types of metal and plastic before onward transmission to recycling processors. It takes very little to contaminate a recycling load and, due to current market pressures and stringent regulations, recycling collected from residents is scrutinized more than it would have been previously when it reaches the MRF. The tolerance level at the MRF has reduced and has led to whole loads being rejected if they contain any non-compliant materials such as tetra cartons, food, nappies (soiled nappies in recycling? Really?), wood, polystyrene, toys, etc. Every time this happens Mole Valley incurs a charge so, on collection day, the Amey crew is required to perform a visual inspection of our recycling bins. If a bin contains any non-complaint items, the crew attaches a hook-on to the bin listing the correct items to be placed in the bin as it isn’t always possible to list the exact offending item. Any resident who would like to discuss contamination or the items in their bin which meant it could not be emptied, should contact Customer Service in Mole Valley by telephone on 01306-885001 or by email at info@molevalley.gov.uk. Items such as textiles and small electrical goods that are collected in addition to items in the recycling bin should be put into clear plastic bags so that the Amey crew can easily identify whether they are recycling compliant. You may also notice black bins with blue lids appearing around the place; this is the new-look recycling bin. It’s been decided that it is more cost-effective to use black bins for both landfill and recycling and differentiate between them with

14 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - August 2019

different colour lids. This doesn’t mean that we will all gradually find our green recycling bins replaced, rather newly issued bins will be black and blue and only if your current recycling bin needs to be replaced will you find yourself the owner of a new style bin. Recycling or Landfill? There has been some confusion over whether or not black plastic can be recycled; it cannot and it should go into a black sack for landfill. However, Mole Valley has decided that, given the confusion that can arise over this, it will accept black plastic in recycling bins and it will be removed for landfill when it reaches the MRF. So, no more worries about whether or not you are doing the right thing with black plastic - either bin will do, albeit the landfill bin for preference. There can also be confusion about the universal recycling symbol on packaging as it often suggests something can be put in the recycling bin when it is not accepted by the local authority. It is the case that whilst some materials are technically recyclable, not all of these materials can be accepted by the MRF. If you are in doubt about any item, you can check whether or not it is recyclable by visiting the Mole Valley website at http://www.molevalley.gov.uk/ and clicking on “Bins - What goes in them” under the “Bins & Recycling” heading. Type the item you’re not sure about into the search bar to find out which bin it should go in. Alternatively you can visit the Recycle for Surrey website at https://www.surreyep.org.uk/what-todo-with-an-item/ where you’ll be asked for your postcode and then, again, simply type the item you have a query about into the search bar. HOME WANTED! Sammy

Sammy was a very frightened, thin and matted little stray who had been living for several months in bushes in a car park. Understandably it took some time for him to gain confidence but he has now blossomed into a very sweet and very affectionate cat.

Because of his background Sammy will need a quiet home with patient owners and no other animals. If you feel you can Sammy the loving home he so desperately deserves please contact Rosemary on 01737 350307 Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

DOUBLE BID FOR HIGH STREET HERITAGE ACTION ZONES SCHEME

Mole Valley District Council is putting forward Dorking and Leatherhead’s historic High Streets for the opportunity to receive funding through Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zones scheme. This scheme is a new £44 million fund which will allow Historic England to work with partners to find new ways to champion and revive our historic High Streets. Councillor Clayton Wellman, Cabinet Member for Economy said, “This is a great opportunity for Mole Valley to support two of its heritage rich town centres. “Leatherhead, Dorking and other High Streets across the district are similarly affected by the dramatic changes in the retail market impacting High Streets across the country. This new scheme is targeted at historic High Streets, specifically those with designated

conservation areas like Dorking and Leatherhead. “If successful the funding could be spent on the regeneration of historic buildings and the associated public realm. This would aim to act as a catalyst for improving wider social, cultural, environmental and economic outcomes. It could also go towards a cultural programme to be developed with our communities and local cultural organisations and designed to encourage local people to engage with the heritage on their High Street. “Part of the application process requires us to show we have support from the local community. Visit www. molevalley.gov.uk/HeritageActionZone to get involved. “We will continue to ensure that Mole Valley District Council participates in opportunities to support our town and village centres.”

I have listed some Typical issues we have dealt with recently: o During the last month we have saved a business user who had their laptop stolen, we were able to get them back and operational in a day, having restored all their user data from our cloud, we changed all their passwords ensuring the old laptop couldn’t be accessed o We have cleansed countless machines- usually where software has accidently been down loaded o We have given hundreds of machines Healthchecks to ensure they are running as quickly and as efficiently as possible o We have upgraded many machines with Solid State Hard drives, for a significant performance boost o Passwords have proven to be a major problem for many customers and we have recovered many accounts where the password was unknown or had become locked out or inactive o Our engineers have ensured that customers machines are working efficiently and have not been compromised following a range of scam calls from “Microsoft” and/or “BT/Talktalk” o Wireless networking problems have been resolved remotely when the printer can no longer be accessed o Windows 10 has been upgraded on some machines where previously Windows 7 was installed to overcome the forthcoming issue of Windows 7 going “End of Life” next year Whilst most of our issues are dealt with via remote connection or over the phone taking less than 10 minutes to resolve, we also have issues which take much longer, maybe where all the software is corrupted and needs to be rebuilt, this can take hours for our engineers to complete, but you are not charged any extra for the time we spend. We have no limit on how many times you can call us, although some customers do adopt a sheepish “err…hello it’s me again” attitude as they feel slightly embarrassed about the number of calls they make! By having Total Care, we also offer a best endeavour’s tablet and smart phone resolution service and assistance Free.

POEM CORNER Holiday At Audrey’s Chailly, nr Montreux. July 1990 “It’s awfully hot - or is it me? Where’s the loo? I need ice tea!” Your “house guest” has left behind Certain phrases that spring to mind Plus memories of stoning plums And puzzling over conversion sums, Of aching limbs and blisters sore From evening swims and walks galore, Of noisy redstarts feeding young Waking before the day’s begun, Thirsty plants to be kept alive, Picking parsley and pinching chives, Trips to Villars, mini hikes, Brushes with those mountain bikes, Frantic efforts - “I must look smart” For a certain party that failed to start. Trips to Nestle - once in shorts With panic change so thoughts Of those in corridors of power Could concentrate for another hour! Some memories are bound to pass But certain ones I know will last:Of mountain views that combine Such peace and beauty that time Stood still and I gasped in pain As tears in my eyes I gazed again. Memories of evenings spent Over lazy suppers in quiet content, Of friendship, laughter and serious chat, Of looking forward and looking back. You made me feel so welcome-a big mistake For I fell in love with your mountains and lake, And have this urge to come again Just to make sure the view’s the same. So thank you for everything, Audrey dear, I’ll be back, if invited, another year!

The Best Bargains

39

For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

LEATHERHEAD DIVISION GIRLGUIDING

Photo L - R: Alison Morris, Charlotte Nimmo, Deborah Scrase, Wendy Amer, Jane Luff, Sue Prior (front), Vicky Leonard (rear), Sharren Bridges

Eight local Girlguiding leaders recently received long service awards during a special event at Bookham Guide Headquarters. Between them, the ladies have amassed an incredible 125 years of service to local Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units. Jane Luff received her 40-year award. Having gained her Guiding warrant in 1979, she has continued as a volunteer leader of several units in Leatherhead and currently runs 5th Leatherhead Brownies. Jane has run many Brownie holiday and activity days for the girls and has also taken on other roles in Girlguiding, including County Outdoors Adviser. Sharren Bridges and Deborah Scrase were each rewarded for 20 years’ service to local units. Sharren started as an Assistant Leader with Brownies, then went on to run 1st Bookham Guides. Sharren runs a really active unit, encouraging the Guides to be out of doors as much as she can. She has organised camps where the girls have slept in hammocks, cooking in the woods, campfires, and much more. Deborah was the Assistant Leader for 5th Bookham Brownies, then went on to become the unit’s Leader

28 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - August 2019

in 2007. She gained her Holiday Licence, and took the Brownies away. She now supports other units who need an extra pair of hands at any meeting. Other local leaders to receive long service awards were: 10 years: Alison Morris (5th Ashtead Brownies), Wendy Amer (2nd Leatherhead Brownies and District Commissioner), Sue Prior (2nd Fetcham Rainbows), Vicky Leonard (1st Effingham Guides). 5 years: Charlotte Nimmo (5th Leatherhead Brownies) Leatherhead Girlguiding is looking to recruit more adult volunteers to help local Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups enjoy weekly meetings and special activities, which help them reach their potential. Helping to run units in Bookham, Fetcham and Effingham, you’ll inspire many young girls onto bigger and better things. No previous involvement in Guiding is needed. If you are able to donate some of your time, contact Christine Moss on ggleatherheaddivision@gmail.com for more information.

‘LEAVE YOUR WALLETS AT HOME’ Cheese & Wine Evening

Local charity Action in Africa told its Surrey benefactors to leave their money at home at their latest event. This long established Ashtead charity has been supporting education, health and building projects in a remote area of north western Tanzania for over 20 years. The Leave Your Wallets at Home Cheese & Wine Evening was not only a celebration of the charity’s achievements, but to show appreciation for all the support that it has been given through the decades. Vice chair Tina Rayburn visited the isolated community of Nyaishozi in April, where she was accompanied by veteran cameraman Timothy Forder. He helped her document the work of the charity. A private screening of the resulting film was held, along with a buffet supper at St Michael’s Church Hall in Ashtead. Tina says, ‘Our fundraisers are always very well supported by local residents and it is through their generosity that Action in Africa has flourished to become the thriving charity it is today. We felt that it was time to put on a rather unique event, whereby we tell donors to actively leave their wallets at home!’. The short film describes the projects currently underway, including providing

36 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - August 2019

solar panelling to supply lighting and the charity’s comprehensive education sponsorship programme for children and young adults. In addition, it covers our feminine hygiene programme - the distribution of long lasting kits to female students, as sanitary products are scare in the area. The Action in Africa committee feels that photographs, newsletters and films help their supporters understand exactly how the charity works and that photographic evidence inspires confidence, which in this age of uncertainty, can be no bad thing. This informal social evening was, ‘Roofed out - such a success that it may become an annual event’, as Tina puts it…’we are a tiny charity - just four volunteer trustees, we are always trying to think of novel ways to attract attention and endear Action in Africa to new sources of support’. We are passionate about the work we do and want our sponsors to feel the same way – to be proud that they help us and look forward to the next newsletter. For more information about the charity (including a link to the film) please visit www.actioninafrica.org or Facebook/Action in Africa.

MOLE VALLEY’S 50TH

PUBLIC DEFIBRILLATOR INSTALLED

Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and Ashtead Tennis Players Club recently installed the district’s 50th Public Access Defibrillator (PAD). Situated at the front of the clubhouse, this small device can save the life of someone who has gone into sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock to restart the heart. MVDC has been working with local communities and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) to install PADs throughout the district since 2016. The machines provide clear visual and verbal instructions, making them easy for anyone to use in an emergency. Every year in Britain around 30,000 people are struck by sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital. If victims aren’t treated properly, more often than not cardiac arrests are fatal. Every minute without defibrillation reduces a victim’s survival rate by seven to ten per cent. If a defibrillator is used within three to five minutes of cardiac arrest, survival

rates jump from six per cent to 74 per cent.* Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure, Councillor David Draper, said: “The figures speak for themselves; defibrillators can make the difference between life and death. As part of our commitment to increasing the health and wellbeing of our residents, we are delighted to continue our ongoing scheme of installing these life-saving devices throughout the district. We’re not stopping at 50, and are currently looking into where else they should be.” Working with the British Heart Foundation and SECAmb, MVDC has run more than 50 free emergency life support skills courses for Mole Valley’s communities, training more than a thousand residents. These courses, named Heartstart, cover a number of areas, including how to use a PAD, give CPR and how to tell the difference between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest. FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. JUNE REPORT You could have heard a pin drop as Angela Young told the true story of two very important people, namely her great grandmother and the Able Seaman who met in Lifeboat No. 8 the night the Titanic sank. Outing to Worthing saw sunshine and just a few clouds - a lovely surprise following days of relentless rain. 34 of us enjoyed our time there, with an almost obligatory ice cream cornet and flake before boarding the coach back home. On the 25th we hired the Reading Room for Pat’s annual Strawberry Tea. Luckily I arrived early and met with the cleaner. She in turn did not know we had booked the

hall, and had almost decided to varnish the floor visions of numerous shoes stuck tight, with fireman’s lift exits crossed my over imaginative mind! A caution sign had been prepared to allow us to alert the traffic on this busy road, and all was announced a resounding success, no mishaps, and the 23 ladies attending arrived safely home. Marion’s first garden safari and Jane’s third pub lunch were both greatly enjoyed, and bought the busy month to a close. We meet at 7.30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month (except August) in Fetcham Village Hall. Do call in. MAUREEN WEBB

ASHTEAD W.I. JULY MEETING REPORT Our July evening meeting was wonderful, with tables set for ‘A Day at the Seaside’ and many members dressed for the occasion. One very brave lady wore her swimming costume for a while, and another arrived in full rain-gear, ready for all eventualities! We enjoyed themed quizzes, bucket & ball games, bingo, sticks of rock, etc. and were allocated seaside towns - Brighton, Worthing, Margate, etc, so of course there was a certain amount of competitiveness amongst us. This was a really fun event which we thoroughly enjoyed, and many thanks to our committee who went to such lengths to arrange it for us all. Back to what goes for ‘normal’ we were pleased to

hear that, as usual, our always successful produce stall at Ashtead Village Day raised another remarkable sum for our W.I. funds, as did last month’s plant sale. It’s really heartening that we are always so well supported in all the efforts for our W.I. The Garden Group have been given a plaque by the daughter of one of our previous long-standing members, Joan Ashbee, to place at the garden beside the APMH which they are looking after. This area is always a pleasure for people to see as they arrive at the side entrance. Looking ahead, a visit is planned for August instead of our usual meeting, details were given for the many sub-groups, date for a lunch and details of an Emlyn Downs evening in October. Our next meeting at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall will be on Wednesday 4th September, 7.15pm for 7.30pm, with Mrs Jackie Simmonds telling us of her ‘Life as a Tiller Girl’.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Make friends with your stuff… What do you value most highly? Partner? Children? House? Car? Favourite old photo? A flower given to you by a special friend? It’s easy to see why we value people, but harder to think why we value ‘things’. We all are different and the reasons I value something may be completely different to why you value the same thing. For example, I love our car, she is called Miss Lovely although when we first got her ten years ago my husband named her Miss Expensicus! She has her own personality, randomly opening the windows, or her locks freezing up on a cold winter’s morning. But despite these minor irritations, we wouldn’t trade her in, she’s part of the family. But contrast this attitude to a ‘petrol head’ (Top Gear has a lot to answer for) who wants the latest model and upgrades a good car every year for the latest version , I just worry about the cost to the environment. When we give things a personality, ‘anthropomorphise’ them, we often value them more. Film-makers Disney have made this an art form - they take humble ants, for example, and give them human characteristics to help tell the story. I am sure there are many of you who cringe at this idea of Anthropomorphism but I find it helps me value things that I would otherwise carelessly discard and replace. Many of us have a favourite cooking knife or a pen; I have a favourite G & T cut glass tumbler which was a birthday present. My husband likes his tea in a very old and chipped mug (pictured) given to him by a grateful client years ago. Neither of us could replace those easily because of the emotional attachment. If we valued ‘things’ more we wouldn’t want to ‘throw out the old and buy more stuff’ so if you don’t already, why not try giving some of your ‘things’ names and personalities and see how much more you start to value them? A few weeks ago I started making Ecobricks (https://www.ecobricks.org/) by collecting non-recyclable plastics and stuffing them into a plastic bottle. Apart from reducing what goes into our black bin to practically zero, I now value even these plastics. They often need to be washed and dried but I don’t mind because I am doing something useful. In the 1940s we had to value every last scrap of food, paper string etc because of the war effort. The reason now is different but our government has declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and to make a real difference, we must be on a ‘war footing’ to save our planet from the consequences of runaway human over-consumption. So many of our environmental problems could be solved if we showed how much we care for Mother Earth by valuing all the ‘things’ we are lucky enough to have. Treat them all as your friends, even that ‘useless’ plastic packaging! Caroline Cardew-Smith website: www.transitionashtead.org.uk email: info@transitionashtead.org.uk

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Allison Ferns visits the Leatherhead Museum

BBC Radio Surrey presenter Allison Ferns dropped by at Leatherhead Museum on the first of this year’s special Craft Days for children at the end of May. This was the first major event at the 17th century Hampton Cottage in Church Street, Leatherhead, since it reopened following the first structural refurbishment in some 40 years. The Museum is owned and operated by the Leatherhead & District Local History Society. With microphone at the ready, Allison interviewed Friends of the Museum Robin Christian and Lin Hampson, together with actress Suzanne Page from Horsham who appeared for the third year running in costume. Suzanne has twice played the role of dressmaker Hilda Hollis, Hampton Cottage’s last private resident before it was sold and converted to the museum in the late 1970s. Last year Suzanne appeared as a Suffragette to mark the centenary of votes for women since 1918. Another actress, Anna Bird from Crawley, made her second Craft Days appearance while dressed as a washerwoman and was especially popular with

children who helped her with the washing. Allison Ferns also interviewed Museum volunteers in the garden as they entertained the young visitors. Listeners to Radio Surrey were treated to no less than eight minutes of live coverage on her regular chat show which starts at noon every Monday to Thursday and lasts all afternoon. The Hampton Cottage recording on 30 May can now be heard on the BBC website some two hours and 40 minutes into the show. The weather was fine on both days, the first time that the annual Craft Days had been organised during the schools’ half term break. The Museum was busy but not overcrowded with 17 adults and 15 children on the Thursday and 17 adults, 26 children on the Friday. Leatherhead Museum is run entirely by L&DLHS volunteers and is open free of charge to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. For more information email museum@leatherheadhistory.org or go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Plastics in the Garden By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham looks at the lure of plastics in the garden.

I expect many of you who watched the recent BBC War on plastics have been having a long hard think about the issue of plastic. I’ve been feeling guilty and have worked out that there is an inverse relationship between convenience/cost savings and being good for the environment. The cheapest most convenient choices I make tend to be worst for the environment! I have very good intensions but it takes consistent effort to reduce plastic properly and you need to be organised. Packing lunch the night before and keeping water bottles filled with water at the simplest level and even making my own oat milk to try and eliminate those hateful tetra packs! It’s a messy and slow business being environmentally conscious and reducing plastic and I suspect it’s going to take a while. Even my favourite organic veg delivery does use some plastic in their packaging and I know they are much better than the supermarkets. So how are we doing in the garden with plastics? At least we have the greenery in our favour and every new garden involves planting more and improving biodiversity. BUT there is still a lot of unnecessary plastic in many things in the garden. It’s not the first time I have thought about my own business and specifically the dreaded plastic pots. They are

62 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - August 2019

convenient and can be reused, but of course many are not reused completely and many end up in landfill. Sadly no commercial growers I use will take them back and reuse them because of risks of plant disease (so they say), so the best I can do is take them to the local garden centres so people can reuse them. This is simply not realistic with large jobs and really they shouldn’t be used in the first place and there should be an alternative… I’m putting pressure on my suppliers and apparently I am not the only one. The horticultural trades association has made a decision to move to a taupe coloured pot which at least can be recycled. Apparently the black ones are made from polypropylene so would be recyclable but the colour black can’t be seen by the sorting machines. The best news so far is that one of my favourite nurseries is trying using paper pulp pots which sound interesting. Of course my mum has been growing her beans in newspaper for years and its brilliant since you plant it in its pot! Some plastic products are more obvious than others and happily I have never been involved in designing a garden with a plastic lawn or a plastic deck and I am firmly against them. The idea of replacing even the ‘green bits’ with plastic would make a green footprint change colour entirely…. Plastic furniture is also a serious concern since it tends to have such a short lifespan since it discolours

Home & Garden and becomes brittle with weathering and soon breaks. Much of it can’t even be recycled. I have been shocked to find that recently the world has gone mad for rattan garden furniture. Because its called ‘Rattan’ I don’t think people realise its ‘plastic’ and it has been so widely sold that there are few gardens without it and there is currently no way of recycling this furniture. Sadly it’s another example of escalating plastic use overtaking the supply chain, without much thought for the environment. I was looking in John Lewis and was amazed to find there was no wood on display at all (in Kingston) - consumers don’t even have the choice of a natural biodegradable material for their garden furniture. We need to stop buying plastic furniture quick whilst there is still a choice of a biodegradable option. Of course I do appreciate that some of the plastic used to make the products are recycled and so this is a way of holding on to our waste plastic (possibly better than shipping it all off to the Philippines) but of course eventually this plastic will have to be disposed of and it is NOT recyclable at the moment. This means the plastic furniture you buy today thinking it’s ok could soon be joining land fill. Then there are the concerns about all the plastic fibres which degrade and break down as micro plastics, presumably into our gardens or wherever we chuck them. The whole thing is rather scary but of course the furniture is cheap and cheerful and very convenient and we are in the midst of a crazy throw away society. If we want to make a positive difference we need to be better informed and less convenience/ cost driven, we need to choose carefully so we buy once and it lasts us, this is good for the environment but not good for sales and its increasingly hard to do since so many companies have fallen for the cheap fix of plastic and it’s harder to find alternatives to plastics. I’m not giving up though! Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. There are a number of ways to improve the diversity of bird species visiting your garden: Increase the number of bird feeders with a variety of seeds and nuts. Keep topped up and clean regularly to stop diseases spreading. If you want a better look at the birds, install a bird feeder with a roof. This will help them feel safe from predators like sparrowhawks and they’ll spend longer on the feeder, providing great photo opportunities. Niger seeds will attract Goldfinches, Siskins and Redpolls. Sunflower seeds are a favourite of tits and Greenfinches while mixed seed will attract species like buntings and finches which feed on split grain when fields are left fallow. A fresh coconut half is great for Long-tailed tits and Starlings. Try leaving seed heads on a few flowers and herbs in the Autumn. Add bird baths or water features, even a pond with a shallow area, so your visitors have somewhere to bathe and drink. Remember to change water and clean bird baths regularly. Include some spiny and berry producing trees like Hawthorn, Blackthorn, or Pyracanthus as a stand-alone tree or part of a border or hedge. Mixed native hedges are a wonderful addition for food sources and safe places to nest.

DECLARING A CLIMATE EMERGENCY IN MOLE VALLEY

An Extraordinary Council meeting was called on Tuesday 18 June where the consequences of rising global temperatures was recognised and a pledge agreed. In addition to making its own commitments, Mole Valley District Council will work with residents and businesses and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Councillor Claire Malcomson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “The ultimate consequence of us continuing as we are will mean we devastate our planet. We have to act now. I am pleased that, with support across the chamber, we were able to declare a Climate Emergency and put ourselves in a position of influence to help make a difference. We are committed to empowering residents and businesses to do the same. “We are uniquely placed as a local authority to lead the way in our district and put ourselves forward as a blueprint for others to follow. First and foremost we must recognise that, as a council, we are not blameless either. We have committed to review the way we do

things as we strive towards carbon neutrality. This will inevitably involve changes limited not only to ourselves, but those that provide services on our behalf. Time is of the essence and, while we would want to achieve this earlier, we will do everything in our power to become carbon neutral by 2030. “There is nothing more important than the journey we are about to embark on. We must work with Surrey County Council at a local level and lobby the Government to act before it is too late. The changes we put in place over the next decade and beyond will not only benefit the local environment and biodiversity in the district, but it will deliver economic and wellbeing benefits, creating jobs, savings and market opportunities. “Our priority now is to put plans in place so that tangible actions can be developed and monitored to ensure progress is made to help protect the local environment in the long-term. I am proud our council voted unanimously to do this and am looking forward to the hard work ahead.”

AUGUST BOOK REVIEWS One Night at the Jacaranda by Carol Cooper (Fiction) What an extremely entertaining book! Dr. Carol Cooper started by writing medical texts about parenting and multiple births, in 2013 she moved to fiction with masses of success. One Night at the Jacaranda is a humorous and raunchy story about a group of thirty-something experiences at a speed dating event. The book is fantastically written, bouncing from each individual’s perspective, progressively exposing their history and mind-set that dictates their current view on love and sex. I particularly enjoyed Cooper’s humour throughout the book, and, unlike ‘Shades of Grey,’ the sexually explicit scenes remain light hearted and relevant. This book would be enjoyed by anyone looking for a fun read and enjoys laughing about the dating scene. I enjoyed Bridget Jones and would highly recommend this book for anyone who looks for similar light-hearted fiction with a humorous approach to dating.

Little Bookham in World War 1 by Vivien White (History) Vivien is a researcher of local history who composed an exhibition of Little Bookham in WW1 for the centenary of the Great War in 2014. This exhibition was extremely well attended with around one thousand people passing through, many of whom, had said that they required more time to read through the vast amount of information and the suggestion of publishing a book was thrown to Vivien. This fantastic account of how WW1 impacted Little Bookham is very easy to follow and adds some personal stories about local families who served in the Great War. The photos included in the book are beautiful and Vivien’s knowledge and love of the area is very much felt throughout the book. This is a wonderful present for someone who used to, or currently, lives in the area, or for anyone with an interest in local or military history. Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut (Fiction) It was with Slaughterhouse 5 that Kurt Vonnegut, after several failed attempts, was finally able to make sense of his wartime experiences. To devastating effect, the novel blends science fiction with an account of his capture at the Battle of the Bulge and subsequent internment in an underground slaughterhouse in Dresden (where he survived the allied firebombing of the city). Written in the direct, emotionally detached yet often beautiful style that is Vonnegut’s hallmark, Slaughterhouse 5 is by turns bleak and blackly humorous yet heart-warming and hopeful. It is by any measure a masterpiece.

MaryFrancesTrust launches Leatherhead LGBT mental health peer support group ahead of Pride in Surrey Leading Surrey mental health charity Mary Frances Trust is partnering with PRIDE IN SURREY to launch a new LGBT support group for adults in Leatherhead, to help address specific LGBT mental health needs and offer peer support. With recent figures revealing that half of LGBT people have experienced depression in the last year and one in six have attempted to take their own lives, mental health support dedicated to the LGBT community is needed more than ever. Patrick Wolter, CEO, Mary Frances Trust says: “There are currently no mental health support groups for the LGBT community in this part of Surrey, so we really wanted to start one. And with Pride coming to Surrey in August, we knew it was the perfect time to do it. We’re delighted to have Stephen Ireland from Pride in Surrey on board. He is a fantastic advocate for our cause and thanks to him and Pride in Surrey, we hope to reach as many LGBT people as possible and raise the profile of this support group.” The new LGBT Support Group will take place at Mary Frances Trust’s offices in Leatherhead on the third Thursday of every month between 7pm and 9pm, starting on 18th July 2019. It is open to anyone from the age of 18, living in Surrey with a mental health condition, either diagnosed or undiagnosed. Patrick Wolter, member of the LGBT community himself and a trained mental health professional, will facilitate the group alongside Stephen Ireland, Founder and Chair of Pride in Surrey, alongside LGBT volunteers. Stephen Ireland, Founder and Chair of Pride in

78 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - August 2019

Surrey says: “When Mary Frances Trust approached me about starting a LGBT support group in Surrey, I knew I had to get involved. I am very passionate about supporting the mental health of the LGBT community as I know going to support groups, meeting people like me who wanted to feel better, helped me to come out of an all-time low, when I was younger. While there is more LGBT recognition and acceptance than ever before, there is still so much work to be done in terms of supporting, educating people and reaching equality.” The LGBT support group will be about meeting people with shared experiences and identities, supporting each other in a safe, friendly, nonjudgmental environment, breaking loneliness and isolation by sharing coping strategies. Over time, members of the group will also build up their own programme of activities and courses that Mary Frances Trust will run to support their mental health and emotional wellbeing. In the near future, the charity hopes to launch other LGBT groups in the areas where it operates: Banstead, Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell and Mole Valley. The charity, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, will also take an active part in the Pride in Surrey event on 10 August in Woking to spread awareness of the LGBT mental health support available, free of charge in Surrey. PRIDE IN SURREY is taking place on Saturday 10th August in Woking. Both the parade and park are free to attend. Sheep Worrying NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

As you all know, a significant part of Mole Valley is rural in nature and, wherever you actually live in “The Valley” you are never more than a stone’s throw away from farmland. One area of concern that we are noticing recently is a marked increase in incidents of “sheep worrying”. This is where injury or distress has been caused to livestock on agricultural land by a dog. Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953, if a dog worries sheep on agricultural land, the person in charge of the dog is guilty of an offence. In fact, even if a dog is not actually chasing sheep or causing visible “distress” it is still an offence if the dog is not on a lead in an enclosed area where sheep are present. If the offence is proven, it can carry a fine of up to £1000. According to Sheep Watch UK about 15,000 sheep are killed each year by pet dogs, when dogs are off the lead in field with sheep or other livestock. This does not include the many attacks which go unreported each year. These attacks can be devastating for farmers who lose their livestock, their impending offspring and their future income all of which can affect their

80 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - August 2019

working lives. Sadly, we are finding that, despite the fact that the vast majority of people living in rural communities understanding how they and their pets should interact with livestock, some people simply don’t follow the normal rules. This means keeping their dogs under control at all times, ideally on a lead and not walking their dogs in places where sheep are grazing. Another issue we have noticed again recently is that cars passing horses on the highway are not always slowing down sufficiently to avoid “spooking” the horses. The only place that horse riders are not allowed to ride is on public footpaths, so it is perfectly permissible for riders to be on roads that are shared with cars, motorcycles and cyclists. A horse riding colleague has also asked me to mention that sometimes, with the best of intentions, cyclists come up behind a horse rider very quietly, presumably to avoid making the horse nervous? She has suggested that, in fact, it would be much better if cyclists could call out that they are behind so that the rider has time to make sure their horse is fully under control. I hope that this information will be of some interest?

Epsom Medical Equipment Fund Celebrates 40 Years of Fundraising for Epsom General Hospital

In 1979 Bess Harding had a dream: to purchase a CT Scanner for Epsom General Hospital and it happened due to the support of the local community. It was the decade in which Epsom & Ewell Council had a local lottery and through the Herald Newspaper, asked the public how the £30,000 raised should be spent. Bess suggested a CT Scanner for Epsom General Hospital, not realising that back then they cost £230,000. Running costs at the time were £2,000 per week which the hospital could not afford. Dr. Kirsten Younger has been a Consultant Radiologist at Epsom Hospital for over 27 years and is now reaching retirement age. She reflects on how much Bess’s Medical Equipment Fund has done over the years to support and enhance the service to the local community. “When I arrived, Epsom had no CT Scanner. Bess defied all odds to fund raise that whopping £230,000 to purchase our first ever CT. This was a remarkable achievement and really put our hospital on the map. Actor Brian Blessed was our chosen celebrity to officially ‘open’ the scanner, a day to remember.” Since then Bess has raised huge further sums of money to buy ultrasound machines and a whole

new Xray room (£70,000). Looking back over those 40 years the fund has been running an extraordinary £5 million pounds has been raised and spent on equipment. “The benefit to the local community, to whom we owe a huge thank you for their support over this period of time, has been enormous,” says Bess, who has a small band of volunteers. Equipment is always needed, of course. Donations are welcomed; cheques should be made out to Epsom Medical Equipment Fund and sent to 32 Tealing Drive, Ewell, Surrey, KT19 0JS. Sign up to our newsletter which can be accessed via www.emef.org.uk; on the Contact page there is a form to complete which will ensure you receive a copy bringing you up to date on what the fund is doing, forthcoming events and important health notices. LEATHERHEAD LIBRARY

15th August, from 2.00 to 3.30pm and all abilities will be welcome. The idea is to continue meeting up regularly, perhaps to work together on a joint project for charity or you can work on your own project. We’d like to share ideas and have a friendly chat along the way. If you haven’t already got a project to work on at the first meeting, then just bring along a basic sewing kit and a small piece of fabric and we’ll do some handstitching. Naturally we can direct you to our stock of high quality reference books to help you get started on your new hobby and to develop it further. Finally, some of you will have noticed that we’ve now got a jigsaw for you to work on when you visit the library. Some of our borrowers have found it very relaxing!
