How can that be? I feel like this year has simply flown by, faster than ever. In my mind it’s about March! One of my favourite seasonal treats that we have included this month is ‘Glow’ at near-by RHS Wisley Gardens. This event promises to dazzle you with giant botanical inspired light installations. The enchanting trail is themed around the four seasons and should provide a wonderful winter outing. I am hoping to visit myself at some point in December, tickets are selling fast so I’d recommend that you book sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. See page 48 for details. We have so many other festive events included this month; our pages are simply overflowing with things to do! And on a non-festive note, we are delighted to bring you news of the Dorking Camera Club annual photography exhibition which will be held at Denbies Wine Estate. Stunning images from their members can be seen in this free exhibition. If you like photography I highly recommend a visit, see page 38 for details. This season can bring a whole array of emotions, most are warm and happy but for some, this can be a difficult time of year. If you are struggling to come to terms with a bereavement, St Mary’s Church, in partnership with Princess Alice Hospice, will be running a Bereavement Cafe from 8th January 2020, and thereafter, on the first Wednesday of each month at St Mary’s Church Hall in Fetcham. I’m sure this will prove to be a source of great support to many and how wonderful that it is so local too. See page 36 for more information. Local charity The Meeting Room support homeless, socially isolated and vulnerable people all year round by providing day-time drop-in centres locally. And Christmas Day is no exception, a free Christmas lunch will be available at Fetcham Village Hall so if you know anyone who might benefit from this amazing service, please do let them know. More details can be found within. Wishing you all a wonderfully festive month, we will be back in the new year as we enter our sixteenth year in print! With Best Regards,

Coping with Christmas when you are divorced or separated

Sarah Houston of TWM Solicitors discusses some hints and tips for separated parents on how to manage the impact on children during the festive season.

Coping with divorce or separation in isolation is hard enough. Adding parental responsibility to the equation can often exacerbate the stress, anxiety and uncertainty even further. All this is even harder still, if you are approaching particular times of the year, like Christmas. Like anyone, children need support. Any separation or dispute can have far-reaching and profound effects on children, regardless of how old or young they are. Christmas Day is traditionally a family day. Children look forward to opening their presents and enjoying the festivities with their family. For separated families it is not quite that simple, and discussions need to be had as early as possible about how this festive time should be shared between two households. At TWM Solicitors, in addition to offering the highest standards of client care, we also pride ourselves on being empathetic and providing our clients with helpful strategies to manage the impact of a separation or divorce, not only upon themselves, but also upon their children. Here is a summary of what some of those strategies are, which can be adapted for children of any age, and which you may also find helpful in planning arrangements for children in the run up to Christmas:

• Try to avoid comparing this Christmas with how Christmas was prior to separation. Change can be positive

• Talk to your ex-partner about arrangements

for Christmas as far in advance as possible. It can be difficult trying to sort arrangements at the last minute. It is likely to intensify tensions between the two of you, which may cause the children to be anxious about Christmas

• Once you have worked out arrangements

with your ex-partner, consider communicating these with the children together, in order to demonstrate a united approach. Try to alleviate any worry the children may have about dividing their time between parents at Christmas

• It’s important to be positive for the children,

but don’t suppress your feelings. You may find it helpful to confide in a family member, friend or a family therapist about how you are feeling

• Always do what you think will be best for your children and don’t feel pressured to please others around you

• Don’t feel pressured into buying presents you

can’t afford - set a budget and don’t try to compete with the other parent. The children will be more interested in having a happy and relaxed time with you both at Christmas.

If there are any safeguarding or welfare concerns, you are advised to obtain advice immediately. If you need any discreet advice or legal assistance in relation to separation, divorce or children matters, please do not hesitate to make an appointment and come in to see us.

PLANNING APPLICATIONS - Many of us find it hard to keep up with all the latest planning applications in our area. If development is being planned by our immediate neighbours, we can expect to be formally consulted. But if the development is slightly further away, we may not know about it until decisions have been taken, and it is too late. Fortunately, help is now at hand in the shape of a very good tool on the FRA’s new website. It shows at a glance the locations of ALL current applications in the Fetcham area. It’s been developed by our planning guru Richard Bradfield, in conjunction with Tekmate in Fetcham village, who are building the new website for us. Applications are located on a map, and if you zoom in on any area, the details and links appear to the full application on the Mole Valley website. Underneath the map on the same page, Richard has created a colour-coded list of the applications which immediately shows their current status. For example, applications may be ‘newly published’, ‘awaiting

decision’ or ‘approved’. Each week, the FRA receives lists of new applications, and status updates on existing ones. You can of course access this information for yourself on the MVDC site, but we think you will find this new tool much faster. Just visit www.fetchamresidents.co.uk and click the Planning tab on the menu bar. SANTA’S GROTTO - Don’t forget it’s our Christmas event on Saturday 7th December! It’s at Fetcham village shops in The Street close to the roundabout. Santa will be in his grotto from 2 to 4pm, courtesy of RJ Clinic. There’ll be a fabulous tombola, mulled wine, face painting, and biscuit decoration too. Because of the uncertainty over the start of work at the former Tudor Motors site, we have reduced the number of stalls this year, and there will be no road closures. LITTERPICKS - Support is going from strength to strength. Meet at Greenwise 10 am, equipment provided. Coffee afterwards. Next dates: 15th December, 12th January, 16th February.

With the very best organic coffee, hand made food and a great space for the community to relax, AllSaints is a coffee shop with a difference. But it’s not just our coffee or food that makes a difference; it’s our staff. We support local young people aged 16 - 21 by preparing them for the world of full time work. We do this by providing employment, training, and counsel through which they gain the confidence and ability to make that step themselves. In 2019 a number of young people have had their lives transformed by the work of AllSaints; young people who are part of our community – young people who you know. In fact, we’ve just celebrated our fifth birthday and the fifteen youngsters who, during that time, have had their lives transformed by AllSaints. But in order for AllSaints to be able to continue to invest in these young people we need your financial support. Please, if you believe in our vision of transformation through employment, do think about making a monthly donation to AllSaints.

If you’re a local business, organisation or individual who would like to support AllSaints, then please get in touch through the email below and we can send you some more information. If you fancy the best cup of coffee in the area, then please just drop by any time Monday to Saturday, 8.00 am to 3.00pm; it’ll be great to see you! AllSaints is owned by Leatherhead Youth Project. HOME WANTED! Mia

Mia was found living as a stray. She is all black, half Siamese and has a stumpy little tail. She is chipped but not registered to anyone. She has been vaccinated, de-flead and wormed. Her teeth have been done, as they were in quite a bad state. We don’t think she can have been straying for long as she is very friendly, trusting, loves a cuddle and her coat is in very good condition, sleek and shiny. She loves her food and has been getting extra to try to fatten her up a bit. She loves playing with her fishing rod, and laser pen toys. She seems tolerant of other cats. If you feel you can give Mia her well deserved forever home please call 0345 260 1387 Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is. 31

Goodbye Windows 7 On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in a matter of days Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced. What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you Beat the rush - act now

Local Charity Organises Film Screening to Raise Awareness and Funds

An audience of 217 adults and teenagers gathered to watch a special PSDS screening of award-winning independent film, The Peanut Butter Falcon, at Leatherhead Theatre, who were hugely supportive of this event, on Monday 28th October. The screening was organised to celebrate the work of Zack Gottsagen, an actor from the USA who has Down syndrome, making his acting debut in a lead role in a major film. This special celebration was also timed to coincide with October being Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Special guests in attendance included Epsom resident, Andrew Self, who appeared on hit TV show The Greatest Dancer last year, and Mencap Campaigns Team member Ciara Lawrence, who lives in Ashtead and is a wonderful advocate for individuals who have learning difficulties. A number of PSDS members and their families were in the audience, along with friends and supporters including representatives from local Rotary Clubs and other groups working with young people with learning difficulties. 17-year-old Ross, a member of the PSDS High5 and 5Club activities filmed a special introduction to the film and was delighted to see his work on the big screen at Leatherhead Theatre. Ross (pictured with PSDS co-founder Helen Shiers, her daughter Thea and Councillor Mary Huggins, MVDC Chair) is studying Digital Media at Crawley College and has his own aspirations to become a great film maker too. We are also delighted to report that the event raised over £500 for PSDS. PSDS Co-founder, Helen Shiers, commented: “We are thrilled our screening of The Peanut Butter Falcon was so popular - we only had two weeks to make it happen. Jennai and the team at Leatherhead Theatre were so helpful and enthusiastic about showing the film. We have received lots of very positive comments about the film and we are sure it will go on to win many more awards! It is so important to see a role model who has Down syndrome on the big screen and be inspired by his achievements. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of Zach Gottsagen in the future and other actors who also just happen to have Down syndrome. The more inclusion the better!” ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - DECEMBER 2019

ASHTEAD TOWNSWOMEN’S OCTOBER MEETING

Nationally, the Townswomen’s Guild originated in 1929 from the Suffragist movement and adopted the colours of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies - red for courage, white for faith and green for hope. Our Patron, the Princess Royal, came to the 90th birthday celebrations earlier this year at the AGM at Cheltenham Racecourse. Several hundred members from around the country attended, many in 1920’s ‘flapper’ style dress. Ashtead Evening Townswomen’s Guild was formed in 1945 and celebrated its 74th birthday at a meeting at the end of October with a birthday cake, beribboned in TG colours. As is our tradition, this was cut by our President for the year, Sylvia Wade. Members thoroughly enjoyed an informative and very amusing talk on ‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf

People’, by Vanessa Scott who was accompanied by her ‘Hearing Dog’, Ellis. Vanessa had a hearing deficit from birth and subsequently became profoundly deaf. Six years ago, she was given a cochlear implant that has given her some hearing for sounds close to her. Ellis is her second ‘Hearing Dog’. Her first, Jet, has retired and is now ‘King of the sofa’ at home. Vanessa described how puppies are trained to be hearing dogs over about two years. She demonstrated how Ellis attracts her attention and leads her to the source of safe sounds such as the doorbell, cooker timer, mobile phone texts etc. His response to warning sounds, such as a smoke alarm, is different and he signals caution to Vanessa. Ellis responds instantly to verbal commands and non-verbal signs. Vanessa’s adult children have left home and her husband often works overseas so Ellis, a black labrador, is her constant companion and gives the family peace of mind when she is home alone. Our next meeting, on 27th November, will have a Christmas theme with songs from Steve Jones, mince pies and a tree decoration competition. There will be a jewellery stall to raise money for our charity for the year, The Princess Alice Hospice. Ashtead Townswomen’s Guild meets in the Ralli Room of Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month (except August and December). Visitors and new members are always very welcome. Contact Chairman Val Crowhurst - 01372 276423 or 07982 432650 or Vice Chairman Di James - 01372 273948 or 07927 886457 for more information.

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. OCTOBER REPORT The October meeting started with the sad news that Madge Fuller had died. She was a very long time member of our W.I. and a Service in her memory was held on 12th November at St. Mary’s Church, Fetcham. An invitation to Fetcham Infant School Harvest Festival was announced plus an update on our growing number of Christmas knitted angels. After the main agenda popular National Trust volunteer and house guide, June Davey, told us of Clandon and the Onslow family; she also talked of the devastating fire and progress for the future. Another of her subjects is West Horsley Place and this has been diary noted for a future booking. The Dorking Halls Autumn Federation Meeting was very informative, and Speakers included Tom Hart Dyke and Simon Thomas. Knit and natter and

our yoga classes continue into next month, and we have two more pub lunches to enjoy courtesy of Jane. Eight ladies representing our W.I. went to the Mole Valley quiz. It was a good evening and an annual event. The Emlyn Downs meeting on the 23rd saw several of us attend an Edwardian Evening tea party, and Downtown style entertainment with singing and anecdotes from Katherine Collett. Other booked activities include a Day Out in London for the Greenwich Christmas Market with river trip, tour of the lights and dinner; also Edible Treats on a Nov Saturday morning, and a session of Marmalade Making early in the new year. Meeting on the first Wednesday of the the month (except August) in Fetcham Village Hall, at 7.30 pm. We’d love to see you. MAUREEN WEBB

MOLE VALLEY W.I. NOVEMBER MEETING REPORT Fetcham Village Hall was full of warmth and welcome on the evening of Tuesday 12th November, in spite of the wet and windy conditions outside. Our meeting was opened by our president Ann Layman. Then followed the AGM. Ann was returned as president for another year and we are pleased to have a full committee. The president’s report was a good reminder of the very full year we have had. Outings, picnics, and interesting meetings have been enjoyed by members. Our nine interest groups have continued to flourish, with gardening having to expand to a second group. Ann continued by

thanking the committee and all members for their friendship and support. There followed an interesting and informative talk by Christina May on the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead, where some of our members volunteer. We discovered classes and services that some of us had no idea existed within the community. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45pm. ASHTEAD W.I. NOVEMBER MEETING REPORT This evening we held our AGM and were very pleased to welcome W.I. friends Jill Elliott and Sheila Webber who came along to help us through the election of our Committee. It doesn’t seem possible that Ashtead W.I. was formed 46 years ago, and is still wonderfully alive and thriving! Thank goodness for the move back to the large hall. We were also able to welcome some visitors, who would have been able to hear more of what Ashtead WI is all about. As is customary, there were reports from our officers on the very happy and successful past year of our W.I. with well-deserved thanks to all who help with its smooth running. After many years on our committee we were sorry that one of our members was standing down, but pleased another newer member was elected. We had a fun quiz later in the evening, a huge display of colourful blankets we had been making for the Rainbow Trust, and after suggestions from our

members, it has been decided to send a donation to the Chase Children’s Hospice charity this year at Christmas. Of course, in December we will be Carol Singing in the Green Lane area of Ashtead, collecting for the Princess Alice Hospice, and we hope local residents (particularly children!) will come out to join in with our carols and make a contribution to such a good cause. Also looking ahead, there will be our Christmas lunch to enjoy together, as always getting to know other members more informally. We have been hearing about the many future events in 2020 so there is much to look forward to. Our December meeting will be on Wednesday 4th, 7.15 for 7.30pm in Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, when we will have a Secret Santa, be making Christmas Trees, and looking forward to greeting any visitors. (A reminder that our January meeting will be on Weds 8th as we don’t plan to be there on the 1st!).

WHAT’S ON

With the longer hours of darkness our thoughts turn to the preparation and celebration of Christmas. This year The Arts Society Ashtead will be selling a gift card for £15, entitling the recipient to attend any four of our monthly lectures during 2020. We look forward to welcoming the recipients from January onwards. The people who create art in its many guises are themselves often little known, but The Arts Society Ashtead always embraces more than just the art itself, as was the case in October when we were given a fascinating lecture by John Benjamin (BBC’s Antiques Roadshow) on the amazing life and work of Harry Murphy. From humble beginnings Harry Murphy was to become one of the finest jewellers and silversmiths of the 20th century.

For further details of our lectures, visits, and tours please go to our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk

We hope you will be tempted to come along to our lecture in January 2020 on the subject of Tapestry, where you will be warmly welcomed. Our monthly meetings (held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month) take place at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, 09.30 for coffee and biscuits, 10.30 for the lecture. There is a visitor’s fee of £5, but first-timers are welcome as our guests. The Society would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and we look forward to meeting you soon.

There is such a thing as a

FREE CHRISTMAS LUNCH Every week the charity The Meeting Room, runs daytime drop-in centres for homeless, socially isolated and vulnerable people living within our communities. They offer them a warm, safe and friendly environment where they are made to feel welcome and have a chance to eat, relax and socialise. A free hot nourishing mid-day meal sustains the body, while talking, playing games and other activities help to break through isolation. By listening to clients and gaining their trust, they try to help them by signposting them to agencies or professional bodies for help. 60 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - DECEMBER 2019

Everyone is welcome and a referral is not required. Each year they organise a free traditional Christmas Day at Fetcham Village Hall. If you or someone you know are interested in attending or if you would like to volunteer please contact them on 07413 978422 or themeetingroom123@gmail.com or just turn up. Christmas Day 10.30am - 4pm. There will be a free full Christmas lunch to enjoy, entertainment, good company and a very warm welcome. For more information visit our website: themeetingroom.biz.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Our House is On Fire! Back in mid-October, Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests had been going on all over the world for a week. London had been seriously disrupted again with roads blocked. Mothers even staged a ‘breastfeeding’ protest in Whitehall with their young babies to highlight that they will be the ones to suffer if action is not taken to stop carbon emissions from rising and the world heating beyond the ‘safe’ 1.5 degrees recommended by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). I have been asked many times why I joined the XR protest when it inconveniences hundreds of working people and anyone trying to get around in London. I have huge sympathy, but I feel that the message is just not getting through quickly enough about the climate emergency facing us. When I had my first child I was worried about the state of the world and how it would be when he grew up. The science about carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels was highlighted in 1990 (nearly 30 years ago!) by the IPCC First Assessment Report. Organisations like Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the World Wildlife Fund have raised awareness of the impact of pesticides on our countryside and the effect on wildlife of deforestation, but actions to correct this damage to our environment is just too slow. My son is now thirty and despite claims by climate deniers and fossil fuel industry lobbyists, the science is now accepted. In 2008 the Climate Change bill was passed, and there has been investment in solar and wind power which now accounts for nearly half of the UK’s electricity production. But eleven years later the Committee on Climate Change’s report is stark: ‘The UK action to curb greenhouse gas emissions is lagging behind what is needed to meet legally-binding emissions targets. Since June 2018, Government has delivered only 1 of 25 critical policies needed to get emissions reductions back on track’ and the State of Nature’s 2019 report: STOP PRESS: ‘Our statistics demonstrate that the abundance and distribution Talk by a member of the UK’s species has, on average, declined since 1970 and many metrics suggest this decline has continued in the most recent of Dorking Climate decade. There has been no let-up in the net loss of nature in the Emergency group UK.’ at APMH 4th XR protests this year have been effective on some levels - in April parliament unanimously declared a Climate Emergency December 8pm. a clarion call to action you would think - but so far we’ve seen Free entry, no ticket no new initiatives, regulations or meaningful government funds needed committed to ‘the emergency’. We can do our bit - drive and fly less, eat less meat, buy fewer ‘things’, repair, re-use and recycle, but we need government and business fully committed to make major infrastructure and cultural changes. If you want to join the XR protests, do that, if not, make yourself a ‘nuisance’ and keep the issue alive in your community - talk (firmly but politely!) to friends and family who don’t ‘get it’ yet. Write to people with influence, do whatever you can. But don’t look back and regret doing nothing when ‘our house is on fire.’ Caroline Cardew-Smith website: www.transitionashtead.org.uk email: info@transitionashtead.org.uk

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

HOW CRIME INVESTIGATORS USE ARCHAEOLOGY TECHNIQUES In a recent lecture to L&DLHS members at the Leatherhead Institute, forensic scientist Professor Patricia Wiltshire explained how techniques long used by archaeologists are now also applied in criminal investigations. They include examinations of pollen grains, spores and fungi as well as botany and studies of insects, soil and both human and animal bones. Professor Wiltshire has appeared in many crown courts to give critical evidence in criminal trials. She explained how Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometry reveals birthplaces of individuals and their movements. Isotopes become incorporated into teeth, bones and hair, and studying body parts allows archaeologists to determine pre-historic human movements. Isotopes of nitrogen and carbon also demonstrate what people ate. So isotopic analysis is now used to provide details about murder victims and DNA is one of the most important techniques used in criminal investigations. Estimation of time since death is critical as it can also narrow the search for missing persons. Re-growth of trampled stinging nettles established the time the Soham child murder victims had lain in a ditch. In a London murder case, budding

bramble stems and fungi growing on detached leaves provided an estimated time of death between the end of September and beginning of November. Skeletal remains were assigned to a victim who had disappeared on 16 October. This window helped police limit their search in the missing persons database. Professor Wiltshire’s methods had on numerous occasions identified the exact day of an event, afterwards corroborated by the criminal’s confession. Forensic science can prove innocence as well as guilt. In another case the deceased had been given a drink made from two hallucinogenic plants and a man was arrested for manslaughter. However Professor Wiltshire analysed items from the victim’s home and his gut which showed he had taken so many other drugs that no-one could be sure what killed him. The accused was cleared of manslaughter and convicted only of possessing a Class A drug. L&DLHS monthly lectures start at 8pm with drinks and refreshments served from 7.30pm. Entrance is just £2. Safety in the Garden 2 By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham continues to looks at issues of safety in the garden. This time looking at water and how to reduce and manage the risks. Water can be a hazard in the garden, from swimming pools to ponds and it’s even possible to drown in just 2cm of water. If you are worried I think it’s best to avoid open water in your garden. Accidents involving water in gardens, whilst terrible, are very rare but we still need to be careful and design out the risks as much as possible. Top designer tips:Swimming Pools should be fenced off from the main areas of the garden with child safety locks and a safety cover. I would always advise against a pool being situated right up next to the house where a fence would not be possible or very unsightly. Pools look beautiful when open on a sunny day, but with the cover on (most of the year) they look less attractive. Water features with open water should be carefully located out of the main routes around the garden so the risks of walking in are reduced. I know this sound obvious but I once visited a garden where the pond was adjacent to the house and you had to creep around it to get into the main garden. Raised ponds are less likely for someone to step in to by mistake, but can be dangerous as children may try to walk around the edge.

Black metal or plastic grates can be used to cover the surface of the water in ponds to reduce risks for children and these can be barely visible if just below the surface. These can be cut to any size or shape too. A raised water bowl is fairly safe but a child may still fall in face first, so even this presents some risk. A temporary cover can be put over the water if needed. Water features with water running down a wall or over a sphere with a covered reservoir are safe (as far as I know). Just make sure the water is treated and well maintained and no one drinks the water! I do hope this doesn’t put you off completely if water is something you really want. Risks can be managed and reduced with good design, but everyone needs to make their own decisions about the risks. Certainly when our children were young we did not have any water features and for us I think this was a good decision as our children loved taking risks. DECEMBER BOOK REVIEWS FLIP! On the Edge by Trevor Stubbs (fiction) -Newly Released 31/11/19 In a strange London clinic, a group of teenagers who’ve all been suffering from ‘Flips’ into another dimension, are being experimented on by a crazed scientist. The professor, obsessed with winning a Nobel Prize, seems not to care what harm he causes the youngsters as he investigates the strange phenomenon affecting them or about the evil aims of the organisation he works for. The kids decide that submitting to the professor’s probing is the only way they’ll learn the truth about Flips, but then disaster strikes... This is a perfect present for any young adult who enjoys reading, they will certainly get hooked so be ready to purchase the rest of the trilogy! The Shadow Courtesan by Willow Woods (fiction) -Newly Released 31/11/19 When her home was destroyed and her family was murdered, Reina swore she would never return again. But now, over a century later, she finds herself back in Tenebrae, which has been taken over by vampires who’ve enslaved the human population. Although now undead herself, Reina is an outcast among the vampires of Tenebrae and is soon given an impossible ultimatum by the very man who murdered her family. Woods is an extremely gripping writer, anybody who enjoys dark fantasy and tales of the undead is sure to be enslaved by this novel and thirsty for their next hit by Willow Woods… every avid fantasy reader wants to find this book in their stocking! The Woman Behind the Waterfall by Leonora Meriel (fiction) This beautifully written story is told through the eyes of a seven year old girl in Western Ukraine. A story about a young girl’s relationship with her mum, and about how her innocence evolves as she learns dark family secrets that stretches across three generations of women. The writing style of this book is absolute poetry with some powerful, thought provoking lines utilised well within the story. It is frequently described as a ‘page turner’ from the beginning and I would agree that it kept me intrigued throughout. This is a fabulous Christmas present for someone who enjoys beautifully written, thought provoking novels, a special gift that will remain with the reader for far longer than the time spent reading it www.bookpotato.org / 01372 879362 / Unit 25, The Swan Centre, High Street, Leatherhead, KT22 8AH

Home Security NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

When considering what to write about this month, it would have been so refreshing not to feel the need to focus on an issue that still continues to cause immense distress to people when it happens. I am speaking, of course, about burglaries of domestic dwellings - as well as thefts from garages, sheds, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. Sadly, it is so often the case with burglaries that many homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in they gain easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all, cases we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level. Even when rear windows and doors have been locked - but the keys have been left in the locks or clearly visible nearby - we have found that burglars have gained easy access simply by breaking some glass and turning the key!! Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to a would-be burglar. Apart from the obvious guidance to ensure that homes and property are locked up securely, it is often the case that a property that looks unoccupied is a more vulnerable target than a home that looks as if there 82 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - DECEMBER 2019

is someone at home. That is why I emphasise, once again, the benefit of using timers to bring on lights when you are not at home. Ideally, you should have lights coming on in different rooms at different times to mirror, as much as possible, your normal patterns of movement. Basic timers are relatively inexpensive and there are now digital timers that can be fitted over many types of wall light switches Also, I would reiterate that, as the dedicated Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley, I can offer free, impartial and cost-effective advice that can help to protect your home and property and make it more secure. That is probably the most rewarding part of my job and I feel strongly that it is  important to help people make their homes and property more secure and less vulnerable to being targeted by a burglar. All you have to do to contact me is to call 101 and ask to be put through to me by name. My extension number is 30809. Alternatively, you can call my direct line on 01483 630809 or email me at Neil. Clarke@surrey.pnn.police.uk. I always focus on practical advice that is cost-effective and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not endorse specific companies but can guide you towards what should meet your needs.
