If you’re intending to be around the local area during the summer months, there are a whole host of fabulous events to enjoy! We’ve packed as many into our pages this month as we possibly can and I hope you are able find at least one that takes your fancy! You could WIN a great prize this month; we are delighted to offer not 1 BUT 2 fabulous prizes in our Summer competitions! • A family ticket for a day out at Chessington World of Adventures. • A family ticket to see a local production of Alice in Wonderland performed by the Immersion Theatre Group. Good Luck to all who enter! We enjoyed a great afternoon at The Ashtead Rotary Village Day in June, the weather behaved and a great time was enjoyed by all. A beautiful traditional carousel dominated the Fun Fair and over a hundred organisations were represented on the field full of activities for everyone’s enjoyment. There was also music, theatre, dance and a superb falconry display, all headlined by jaw-dropping Stunt Riders in the main arena. I hope you like our photo coverage of this great event. As well as this, the Leatherhead Duck Race took place the following day, and so many little plastic yellow ducks floated off down the River Mole, certainly a sight to see! Turn to page 62 for this. I’m signing off now, but I do hope you all enjoy a great month. I’m hoping for a sunny one as I am getting married in a few weeks time! With Best Regards,

5 problems to avoid when selling a property This month, local expert Stephen Morris discusses matters that frequently appear when selling residential property. Sales can be held up by issues that are not perceived as problems during ownership. Below are some common problems which often arise: 1. Building regulations Extensions whereby building regulation consent is obtained but not the final Building Regulation Completion Certificate can have a consequence. The buyer may insist you obtain indemnity insurance/retrospective certificate from the council. Do ensure you arrange for the council to inspect the work on completion and issue a certificate. Do not assume your contractor will do this for you. 2. Building regulations consent
• FENSA certificate for double glazing since
and building regulation consent. Note the covenants on the Land Registry title when you buy the property. Consent may be required from the beneficiary of the covenant for works before you carry them out. If you do not obtain the consent, indemnity insurance may be required to cover against the risk of enforcement action for breach of the covenant. It may not be possible to obtain consent as the beneficiary of the covenant is untraceable and in which case indemnity insurance may be the only choice. 4. Landlord consent It is usual for landlord consent to be required for any alterations to leasehold property. If not obtained, it is likely a buyer will insist you obtain retrospective consent from the landlord.
• Gas safety certificate for boilers installed since
You must approach the landlord for consent for any alteration works before you carry them out. A deed of variation of the lease may also be necessary.
• ELECSA or NICEIC certificate for electrical work
5. Failure to obtain build over consent
1 April 2002
1 January 2005
since 1 January 2005.
If you do not have these certificates, your buyer will likely insist you pay the premium for indemnity insurance. You must ensure your contractor is a registered installer who will issue the appropriate certificates on completion of the work. The certificates should also be registered with the council. You should keep these documents in a safe place. 3. Restrictive covenant consent Potentially required in addition to planning permission
Building an extension or conservatory over a public sewer or within 3 metres of the sewer? A build over agreement from the local sewerage authority is required. Failure to obtain this means the sewerage authority can remove the structure without compensation. If this is not in place, a buyer is likely to insist that indemnity insurance is obtained. At TWM Solicitors, we have a dedicated team of experts who can advise you on all aspects of residential property. We would be pleased to assist and discuss your requirements without obligation.

MOLEBRIDGE GP SURGERY - Our chairman Tim Waller has been holding a series of meetings in recent weeks to assess the impact of the proposed closure of the Molebridge practice in Cannonside. The focus has been on establishing whether the closure is absolutely necessary, and if so, what can be done to help the hundreds of Fetcham residents who will be affected. It’s being proposed that patients can switch to Molebridge’s main surgery in Kingston Road, Leatherhead, but for many this will be much less convenient. Any closure must be approved by the Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which will examine the surgery’s claim that the Fetcham branch has become financially unviable. It’s expected there’ll be a final decision by the CCG in July. In the meantime, anyone who thinks they may be affected by the proposal, should complete the practice’s patient survey. The results of this will be taken into account by the CCG. 20 MPH SPEED LIMIT - We are looking carefully at proposals by Surrey County Council to put in place e
O
ars service to the 0 ye vil r8 la g ve
a 20 mph speed limit zone along Bell Lane and the Street, in the vicinity of Oakfield School and the village Infants School. To help enforce the lower limit, the County Council is proposing to install raised tables at points between the roundabout at the junction with Lower Road and Fetcham Village Hall. We have been having discussions with council officials about the exact siting of the speed tables, and the implications of the measures on adjoining roads in the village, such as School Lane and the Cobham Road. The council hopes to complete the work over the summer school holidays to minimize disruption. BOX CATERPILLARS - There have been reports suggesting that the destructive Box caterpillar is arriving in numbers in Fetcham. If you are not aware, these non-native green and black grubs can quickly devastate your precious box hedges and topiary. Please examine your box bushes carefully, removing any caterpillars and then spray with a suitable pest controller. More information at www.rhs.org.uk/advice/

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
Future Mole Valley (the new Local Plan) The installation of the Liberal-Democrat cabinet at MVDC following the Council elections last May, means that the Councillors taking over each of the portfolios need some time to review the plans and policies that were being worked on by the outgoing portfolio holders. You will no doubt have heard that a review of the Local Plan is not the least of the portfolios under review and the cabinet is now considering if it wants to move in the same direction as was being proposed its by predecessors. This has resulted in a delay to the public consultation on the Local Plan, which was previously scheduled to begin on 24th June but is now postponed until the autumn and is currently planned to take place from 21st October to 1st December 2019. This means that we will all have to wait another few months to learn which sites are going to be proposed for development across the District over the years up to 2033. It seems that we must look forward to a summer of continued speculation on exactly where all the new development is likely to take place. What joy!
neighbourhood policing structure and an internal MVDC need to streamline enforcement activity. In its first month, the JET has been involved in the following types of action: • liaising with local residents to gather intelligence on local issues resulting in visits to local “hot spots” • investigating abandoned vehicles – most had not been abandoned and had simply not been driven for a long period but two that resulted in removal, including a damaged car that had been left for weeks in a ditch following a road accident, although the car’s owner did stump up the costs for its removal. • one unauthorized encampment. • 13 fly tips were visited, although only one contained material that enabled the team to identify its original owner and so set up an investigation. If you want to report an issue to the JET, you can call them on 01306-885001, email them on ASB@ molevalley.gov.uk (emails are checked daily) or else go to the “Report it” section of the MVDC website at: http://www.molevalley.gov.uk/index. cfm?articleid=17455 and click on the relevant box.
Joint Enforcement Team Earlier this year, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) established a Joint Enforcement Team (JET) to work in partnership with the Police and other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour and other nuisances in our communities. The team comprises three people: Ian Slogrove, Helen Baker and John Fruen, two of whom have a police career behind them and the third who has received extensive training in dealing with conflict situations. The creation of the JET was driven by an increase in reports of antisocial behaviour, changes in the
Transform Leatherhead For those interested in developments on the Transform Leatherhead project, there are two public exhibitions scheduled to take place in July: • 4th July, from 2-8pm at The Leatherhead Institute • 6th July from 10am-4pm at The Swan Centre People visiting the exhibition will be invited to have their say on the Leatherhead High Street improvement proposals. In addition, there will be a detailed update on the progress of the Traffic Modelling Study. Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

LOOKING FOR
DOG
LOVERS!
I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.
Would you like a little extra income? Roz Bourne phone: 01372 453047 | 07969 196 227 email :kt@waggingtailsuk.co.uk www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/kt/carer-enquiry

JULY BOOK REVIEWS The Story of the Huguenots - A Unique Legacy by Joyce Hampton (Historical) This is a substantial read and packed with information. The Huguenots were an adverse religious group of people dating back to 1517, when Martin Luther began challenging the Catholic church, thus beginning the Protestant Reformation. This book examines the rise of Calvinism, wars of religion, revocation of the Edict of Nantes, and the global diaspora of the Huguenots; events that had a massive impact on defining the Christian denominations as we know them today. I was particularly impressed with the number of academic references throughout the book to validate the information. I also enjoyed the personal element to this factual literature, giving extracts from specific family histories and how events impacted these families. For me, this book was comparable to a TV documentary which offers comprehensive historical information along-side a palatable description of the events that occurred Forever Loved: Eve’s Story by Joanna May Chee (Young Adults/ Christianity) A beautifully written fictional memoir of the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Chee has taken the biblical text and key messages to create a memoir from the perspective of Eve. Primarily, this is a story about a father’s love for his daughter and how God’s love for us all is demonstrated within scripture. This book is unique and, despite no surprises in the events that take place, it remains a very enjoyable read. There are three sections; the author describes her personal experience of Christianity, followed by her ‘story of Eve’, then finalises with an invite for the reader to reflect on their faith, encouraging a closer relationship with God. I would suggest that this is an ideal (or essential) gift for someone who is new to Christianity, teenagers and young adults who are exploring their own beliefs and biblical concepts. No Way Out by Major Adam Jowett (True Crime/ Military autobiography) This war-based autobiography is an outstanding story that keeps you gripped right from the first page. Mayor Jowett writes an exciting and emotional account of his experience in Afghanistan, when leading a military mission whereby the town of Musa Qala was to be protected at any cost. The troops were inexperienced and ill prepared with limited ammunition and resources. There are clearly some deep political concepts to this book, but primarily I found this to be an astonishing story of leadership and tales of courageous soldiers who have not received the recognition they so clearly deserve. This is a fantastic book for anyone who enjoys military autobiographical stories, action packed reads or war politics. It’s a ‘Sunday Times Bestseller’ and this powerfully told story certainly deserves the extremely high reviews that it has been receiving.

The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7
On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 6 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.
What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, upto date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

Free Courses For the Computer best online prices, it’s a really good
idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.
If you are over 55 and live in the Mole Valley area, you Shops & Services can use Age Concern’s free computer courses based in either Dorking or Leatherhead. For further information about the society & the programme for next year, take a look at our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk
Hopefully by the time you read this the weather will reflect the summer season as we continue our 2019 programme of lectures as well as visits & tours. Lectures enjoyed so far have covered an interesting range of subjects from ‘Catherine the Great’ to ‘Architectural Trompe L’ Oeil’ & we look forward to our next lecture ‘Australian Rock Art’ in July. We seek a diverse range of subjects to both entertain and inform members, we do not focus solely on fine & decorative art. The first of our visits & tours has been a great success & our next visit is planned for June to Taplow Court & Dorney Court with the opportunity to meet the Head Gardener at Taplow Court & tour the grade 1 listed Dorney Court, a magnificent stately home, which should prove to be a thoroughly enjoyable day out. Our Society has a keen & active involvement in the local area, especially in primary schools & works with artists to encourage school pupils to enjoy art in a fresh new way. Visitors will find a welcoming atmosphere including coffee and biscuits & enjoy a great lecture given by a renowned expert as well as meeting & making new friends. We meet in the Peace Memorial Hall on the 3rd Tuesday (except August), doors open at 09.30 for the lecture at 10.30. The charge is £5 for nonmembers but first-timers may attend free as our guest.
Bookham Wine Club
Explores Californian Wines on Monday 8th July 2019 BWC’s July meeting welcomes wine expert Deborah Zbinden when she reveals the fascinating history of Californian wine making. Since Spanish missionaries first produced wine for Mass in the 18th Century, wine making has survived many ‘ups and downs’ and today, produces a great number of excellent wines. Californians, they say are serious about wine, and relaxed about everything else! Wineries are California’s second most popular tourist destination only Disneyland has more. The best wines come from the Pacific Coast and the famous Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and Deborah will be inviting members to taste six of them - three white and three red. Later in July, Friday, 26th, in co-operation with the Association of Wine Educators, BWC will be holding a special Summer Event; a tutored wine tasting of 25 wines, led by Heather Dougherty. A Hog Roast & music follows.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead What’s for dinner tonight? It seems sometimes that we obsess about food. Not surprising, I love eating, it’s a very pleasurable thing to do. And we obviously need to eat to live. There are endless cookery programmes on TV, being a celebrity chef is now a thing and hundreds of books are written about recipes or the latest diet craze. It feels like an information overload - but does it help you decide what is best for your health and the environment, particularly in regard to the vegan/carnivore choice? Let’s see if I can bust a few myths… Myth 1: We should all be vegan to protect the environment. It’s a great idea to eat less meat and dairy products as doing so decreases the emissions from agriculture and allows more people to be fed from smaller area of land. But none of us needs to eliminate meat completely unless we want to. Some animals feed on grassland that’s not suitable for crops so they have a role in converting things we can’t eat into things we can. And meat and dairy add variety to our diet. But a diet with more vegetables, nuts, pulses etc can be good for your health and the environment, so why not try being a selective carnivore, and try to buy ethically sourced, organic meat if you can. Myth 2: We need to eat lots of protein and meat is the best source. We do need to eat protein but the average person only needs about 50g per day. You’ll need more in some cases eg if you are a training as an athlete but most of us manage just fine on the average intake. Meat is a good protein source but so are nuts, legumes, soya beans, eggs, even bread contains some protein. On a normal balanced diet, it is quite hard not to get enough protein. And if you eat more than your body can use on a daily basis, it will end up being flushed down the loo. Myth 3: There are some nutrients you can only get from meat. Vegans need to take a vitamin B12 supplement but Iron is the thing most meat-eaters worry they will miss out on if they move to a more veggie diet. Although it is more easily absorbed from meat, you can still get plenty from legumes, nuts, grains and many vegetables. Lots of sports people are vegetarian or vegan, from Lewis Hamilton to Novak Djokovic and they don’t seem to lack energy! I’m not vegetarian but I do consciously eat less meat than I used to. And when I do eat it, I avoid beef, the worst for greenhouse gas emissions, and usually go for chicken or pork. It’s a modest change of diet but far from feeling restrictive, it has increased the repertoire of what we cook at home. What’s for dinner tonight? I’m going to surprise myself! BEAUTIFUL SURREY LOCAL COMPANIES TO SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS
Pub on the Pond (Stamford Green) by Cathy Walter
As part of the regular Ashtead summer scene, residents will be familiar with the popular annual Art Show staged at the APMH in early August every year. This year the artists from Ashtead Art Group have
reason for extra celebrations. The Club is thrilled to announce the participation of two local companies as part of a drive to encourage pride in the locality. Michael Everett & Co. Estate Agents, based in Ashtead and other Surrey towns and Jones’ Creative, designers and printers of Leatherhead will be sponsoring a new prize category at the Summer Show for “Best Local Scene” in addition to their generous sponsorship of the annual Judges Awards for all subjects and media. The club hopes visitors to the Show will be delighted with these reminders of the beautiful area in which they all live as well as enjoying the talents of so many local painters. LEATHERHEAD DUCK RACE GOES SWIMMINGLY!
This year’s River Mole-based celebrations took place on Sunday 9 June from 1pm and saw hundreds of people of all ages soak up a day packed full of entertainment both on and off dry land in Leatherhead. On a day of glorious sunshine and perfect fast-flowing river conditions for the ‘contestants’ to partake, excitement on the banks and on Leatherhead Bridge grew as the day’s festivities progressed. The races took centre stage, with a total of eight - all sponsored by local businesses - tote races taking place including, for the first time, a pub-themed race which was won by the duck owned by The Kings Arms in Dorking. The hugely popular family-friendly annual event is organised by Surrey Hills Community Radio, The Swan Centre and Mole Valley District Council. The day saw the Show Choir adding a musical

atmosphere to proceedings, a BBQ organised by the Running Horse pub, a model railway and a number of organisations’ stalls and storytelling set up on the river bank. The popular charity swan race also made a welcome return. All proceeds went to Leatherhead Parish Church’s ‘Making History Project’, with a little over £350 raised. The day culminated in the mass duck race, with crowds gathered to excitedly cheer on their sponsored ducks. The event raised approximately £4,000 towards future Leatherhead town centre events and local charities. Thanks go to event volunteers from Surrey Hills Community Radio including river bank and bridge marshals, Surrey Search & Rescue, St John Ambulance and cadets, the Show Choir, and Surrey Society of Model Engineers.”

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. MAY REPORT We were very pleased to welcome two new visitors and we hope that they will return next month. Secretary Sylvia’s clear and concise explanation of the two Resolution subjects were extremely well pitched, and voted on. She will be travelling to Bournemouth as our delegate for the June NFWI Annual meeting. Treasurer Pat had received a lovely phone call from long standing member Madge, who recently moved to Essex, and her news was relayed to the members. The plan that we lightened the more formal Resolutions meeting by way of refreshments, then Anne’s bingo extravaganza, had been well thought out. Missing was the knowledge (until mid way through) that our state of the art ball carrier and board catered for numbers up to 75 and our
64 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - July 2019
cards showed numbers up to 90. We would have still been there now waiting for the higher ones to be called. Thank goodness for Gwyneth who put us out of our misery and earned her table a fistful of Flumps. This one and only game took 40 minutes. Our pub lunch in May is proving popular and will be held on the 15th. Marion’s garden safari was also well received and names were soon on the roving board to indicate interest in this seasonal event. Sheila announced the range of items likely to be at her annual auction, and early details of the August barbeque and June strawberry tea appeared in the monthly newsletter. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month (except August) in Fetcham Village Hall at 7.30pm and visitors are most welcome. MAUREEN WEBB
W.I. Meetings
ASHTEAD W.I. JUNE MEETING REPORT A good start to the evening with all kinds of plants waiting to be purchased from well laden tables, and a reminder for us all that the Ashtead W.I. Garden Group will be looking after the gardens around our Peace Memorial Hall, with funds for this assisted by the plant sales. They hope everyone visiting the hall will enjoy the colourful displays. We were again pleased to welcome two new members this evening and all recent new members have been invited to a ‘get to know you’ gathering soon. Proceeds from our last month’s book sale have gone to our sisterorganisation Associated Countrywomen of the World. Looking ahead, members will be soon be seeing the Arundel ‘Carpet of Flowers’ and a future outing is being planned for August instead of our monthly meeting. Dr Geoffrey Mead of the University of Sussex told us about the many different attractions of coastal resorts, starting with the well-to-do visiting Wells to drink the ‘healthy’ waters in many parts of the
UK, including Epsom of course, and from there people went to coastal areas for their health - in the 18th C for sea water (yes, to drink), the 19th C for the sea air, and the 20th C for the sun. We were taken to places via horse & carriage, paddle steamers, trains, then cars, and we learned about the origins of piers, their destruction and sometimes regeneration. This was a social history of pleasures and entertainments at coastal areas around the country for people over hundreds of years. As a follow-up to this evening, next time we have been asked to come ready for ‘A day at the Seaside’ (and to bring a pencil!) so we wait to see what summery delights our members find in their wardrobes, hoping the July weather will be favourable. We finished with our excellent raffle prizes and news of our many sub-groups. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 3rd July, 7.15 for 7.30, with a reminder in advance that as always, there will be no August meeting at the hall.
FROM SANDRA BROWN
MOLE VALLEY W.I. JUNE MEETING REPORT Ann Layman, our President, welcomed all members & thanked people who had brought craft items they had made during the year as well as single roses. These items would be judged by our speaker later in the evening. Birthday wishes were given to those who had a birthday in June. We have a few social activities later in the year: Farm to fork: a presentation given by a local farmer, as well as a cream tea in July; Trip to Vintage Essex on 2 October will include a ploughman’s lunch & rides on old buses; Quiz evening on 19 October which will include a hot meal and desert. After a short break, our speaker on the subject of “Beside the Seaside” took us on an interesting & humorous nostalgic trip down to sea & sand from Scarborough, Blackpool & onto Brighton. In 1630, a spring was found in Scarborough & people rushed in to the sea & came out feeling rejuvenated. King George IV was advised for health
reasons to go to Brighton to drink the sea water & stayed in Brighton Pavilion. In 1938 the Holiday Pay Act was introduced which enabled people to get two weeks paid holiday, accommodation & self catering was required and so Butlins & Pontins were introduced. Piers were built for entertainment, the longest of which is Southend. Punch & Judy shows were put on the beach for the children, of which there are only 6 registered shows still in existence. Chocolate flake cones, Blackpool rock, woollen swimming costumes (remember them!), & picture postcards were all introduced. We meet on 2nd Tuesday of the month at Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45; our next meeting being held on 9 July on Scams and Frauds. We have various activities, badminton, knit and natter, rambling, scrabble and mah-jong to name a few. Further details are on our website www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk From Carol Murray

ASHTEAD TOWNSWOMEN’S MAY’S MEETING REPORT
We had a friendly and cosy meeting in the Ralli room as usual. There was a copy of the ‘small guilds constitution’ on the tables to be read and voted on at the end of the meeting. The Chairman and Vice Chairman had heard about this when they attended the’ Chairman’s at home’ in Birmingham on 21st March and found it very interesting. We were given dates for Carol Services and other events. We had good feedback from the cream tea at the Garden Centre in Cobham and information about a coach trip to Worthing in September. We have our Summer Lunch in August and other events to come. Our speaker for the evening was Angela Young whose great grandmother Noel was on the Titanic. The talk was called ‘The Aristocrat and the Able Seaman’ and it went on to describe how these two people would normally not have met as they were on very different social levels. Angela went on to describe the conditions around the sinking. The Marconi wireless equipment has broken down but one of the operators managed to mend it or the number of people lost would have been even
worse than it was. She followed on to tell us that Thomas who had been an able seaman for 10years with the White Star Line was commanding Lifeboat no 8 which Noel was in. He found out she knew about boats and asked her to take the Tiller. He also noticed she was very good at comforting distraught passengers so asked her to do this. They were at sea for 8 hours not knowing where they were, but eventually rescued. This was a tragedy with the loss of many lives of the passengers and crew. Maritime law was changed so that all ships had to have wireless equipment and be open 24hours a day which it had not been before. Lifeboat accommodation would be based on number of passengers and crew not on tonnage as before. Watertight compartment to be redesigned. It was a fascinating talk and showed us how some of the myths about the Titanic came about. We followed with refreshments and more business, ending up with the vote about the ‘small Guilds constitution’ which was passed. Val Crowhurst 01372 276423

HOWARD BADMINTON CLUB IS PROUD TO BE
CELEBRATING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. In May the club held a Celebration Dinner at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club. We were delighted to welcome our President and founding Chairman Peter Turner, as well as many past and present members. Fifty years ago, Badminton was played with wooden rackets and was not yet an Olympic Sport. Today Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the UK - ranked 4th after Football, Cricket and Rugby. Badminton is a great way of keeping fit. education classes. Such was the demand for these evening classes at The Howard of Effingham School, that a limit of two years tuition was imposed on those attending. In response to this, the Howard Badminton Club was formed in 1969, to cater for those wanting to continue playing and develop their skills. As demand grew, new sections to the club were added, playing in mainly single court venues in and around Leatherhead. In the 1990s, the club consolidated all of its sections and moved to the newly built sports hall at Downsend School.
It keeps hearts happy Regular play is great for keeping hearts healthy, conditioning and strengthening the heart muscle, reducing hypertension and limiting the risk of blood vessels clogging.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
Using LIDAR to reveal Hidden Civilisations & Iron Age structures Light Detection and Ranging or LIDAR involves using light beams projected from drones to discover hidden evidence of long lost buildings and settlements invisible at ground level. Archaeology researcher Krystyna Truscoe gave a fascinating lecture on the subject to the Leatherhead & District Local History Society on 17 May. Krystyna, who has worked on aerial photograph and mapping projects since 2005, is currently using LIDAR sources for research at Reading University into the landscapes of Iron Age settlements in England. She mentioned two recent projects covering historic settlements in the Maya region of Guatemala and structures near the famous Angkor Wat monuments in Cambodia. LIDAR data revealed previously unknown
Silchester lidar mosaic
ancient settlements over an extensive area of the central Maya Lowlands, identifying 61,480 ancient structures. Evidence was found ranging from small rural settlements to large urban areas. In Cambodia, LIDAR surveys had found that Angkor Wat was merely the epicentre of an immense settlement complex, with elaborate engineering works designed to manage water and mitigate monsoon rains. A LIDAR survey measures distance through the time taken for a pulse of light to reach and return from a target. Airborne LIDAR uses a pulsed laser beam, measuring between 20 and 200,000 points per second. These points combine to build an accurate, high
resolution model of the ground and the features on it. The aircraft typically flies at around 800 metres above ground level and a laser beam is transmitted in pulses, allowing a swathe of about 600 metres to be surveyed during a flight. Measurements at 2-metre intervals or closer allow a detailed model of terrain to be created. LIDAR can survey entire landscapes. It produces 3D data accurate to within a few centimetres and can model terrain hidden under woodland canopy. Grassland is very susceptible and it is particularly valuable in improved pasture where features are heavily denuded. On moorland too it can be useful and on arable land it can show heavily denuded earthworks hard to survey on the ground. Surface geology needs to be considered, particularly in flood plains. Success in wooded areas depends on type of tree cover and time of year. A project of especial interest was The Chase Through Time which explored the Dolebury Warren Cannock Chase area of outstanding natural beauty in Staffordshire. Many previous generations had left their mark on the land but much was hidden in woodland and heath. Historic England and the county council undertook an archaeological survey using LIDAR which revealed the bases of huts where soldiers trained before being sent to the front. The site was re-used during World War 2 as a location for armoured vehicle tests. For more information on the Leatherhead & District Local History Society go to www.leatherheadhistory. org or visit the Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage in Church Street which has now re-opened after refurbishment.

Gardens are for Sharing By Selina Botham
Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham describes her latest revelation about greens… Sadly progress has been slow on my own garden (mainly due to the busy-ness of the season) and I’ll need to wait until I have more to report before my next instalment. Clients gardens always take priority and there is so much to do work-wise at this time of year. Despite the neglect, much is looking good and blooming beautifully but there are too many weeds popping up and I am still leaving the newly formed beds to lie fallow so I can deal with the brutish plants I had grown under the old willow where nothing else survived. So….I’ve been looking slightly further afield for inspiration and have just returned from a beautiful walk around the village and up Telegraph Hill. The evening light as it dapples across the path which leads from the end of Old Claygate Lane is always such a pleasure with the views across the field and today a stunning wild rose to compliment the fresh greens. How can I say it? The greens are staggeringly ‘green’ at the moment, with the Oak trees such a perfect shade of my favourite colour this evening. It’s such
70 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - July 2019
a blessing to have greenery around us and I was particularly aware of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place. I took time to appreciate the open grass and stately Oaks at the top of Telegraph hill and also the open grass and pretty trees of the Roundway. These green oases of communal green space are really special and we are so fortunate that our local council still just about has enough money to keep them maintained. Of course the benefits for the wider environment, (for birds and bees and air quality) are all just as important as the pleasure they give us. I also noticed all the front gardens I passed full of flowers and greenery and enjoyed the beauty of them too. Is it just me or do roses seem particularly beautiful this year? I was driving past a truly spectacular combination of deep red with pure white climbing roses in a front garden in Chessington yesterday evening too and noticed a young man stopping and looking and smelling one of the blooms. It made me so happy I nearly stopped and had a chat with him - but I realised (just in time) that that would probably embarrass him and put him off gardens for life! But it was nice to know that it’s not just me with my garden designer’s eye who stops and looks and appreciates a flower or two. So be encouraged when you are planting your garden, it’s not just you who will benefit from your garden but your neighbours and friends and passers by may just notice and stop to touch or see of smell your roses. I think what I realised today, is that gardens are for sharing! Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. WHAT’S ON DURING JULY/AUG
CINEMA SCREENINGS UNDER THE SUMMER’S SKY
CHILDREN’S STORIES IN A BEAUTIFUL SETTING
THIS August, join Painshill for cinema screenings in their stunning landscaped gardens. The Serpentine Lake and Gothic Temple will make an incredible backdrop for two of the best films of 2018. On Friday, August 16 they will be showing Bohemian Rhapsody and on Saturday, August 17 they screen A Star is Born. Winner of four Oscars and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Bohemian Rhapsody stars Rami Malek in an extraordinary performance as singer Freddie Mercury. In an enthralling celebration of Queen and their music, the film follows the band’s meteoric rise, their revolutionary sound, Freddie’s solo career and chronicles the band’s reunion and one of the greatest performances in rock history. In A Star is Born four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper and music superstar Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic souls coming together, on stage and in life. Theirs is a complex journey through the beauty and the heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive. Films will start at 8:30pm but the gate will open at 7.00pm leaving you plenty of time to also enjoy the garden. Bring a picnic along or purchase food and light refreshments. There will be a fully licensed bar on site. Tickets are £16 and they are on sale now! Book on the Painshill website at www.painshill.co.uk.
THIS summer, Cat’s Grin Theatre Company bring entertaining and enlightening productions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows to the beautiful landscape gardens of Painshill, Cobham. How mad is the hatter? What does the dodo do? Questions are answered and answers are questioned in a deceptively simple, yet highly original re-telling of Lewis Carroll’s classic on Saturday 3rd August and Saturday 10th August. Audiences are introduced to many of the extraordinary characters that our eponymous heroine encounters during her wanderings in Wonderland. Hold tight for rolling heads, rocketing sneezes, skimming plates and darting jam tarts. Kenneth Grahame’s unforgettable assembly of animals are lovingly re-created with the Cat’s Grin Trademarks of wit and style on Sunday 4th August and Sunday 11th August From an idyllic riverside setting to the final battle for Toad Hall, this enchanting interactive production about selfless friendship is told with high energy, humour and audience participation. What better setting to enjoy these stories than the award-winning Painshill landscape. Tickets are £12.50 for adults and £10 for children and they are on sale now! Book on the Painshill website at www.painshill.co.uk.

Insects are the foundations upon which all wildlife relies on to survive. We are often asked how to increase the numbers and variety of wildlife in gardens big and small. It’s very simple, just increase the insects and the rest won’t be far behind. Establishing insect biodiversity in your garden is easy and there are several ways to achieve this: leaving dead wood for beetles, building insect hotels, creating a pond, planting trees or growing wildflowers. Dead and decaying wood in shaded and undisturbed areas creates vital habitat for insects including the endangered stag beetle. These magnificent creatures are a joy to watch and a guaranteed way to get kids excited about native wildlife. Since WWII 97% of our traditional meadows and grasslands have disappeared. This has made life particularly difficult for our native bees, hoverflies and butterflies who rely on the variety of food that wildflowers offer them. Wildflower is versatile and low maintenance, working easily alongside mown lawn or as a green roofing material on the countless unused shed roofs and structures in our gardens. A patch of wildflower, regardless of size, will make a massive impact to our insects as well as being a beautiful addition to your garden.

Summer Crime NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
The summer months should be a time to be enjoyed by everyone but, sometimes, things can be spoiled by a few people behaving inconsiderately. It is easy to assume that this is all the fault of young people on school holidays but that is not always the case. Parties and barbeques in gardens are an enjoyable feature of summer (when it’s not raining!) but they can cause annoyance to neighbours if they carry on into the late evening and night on a regular basis. Some people have young children who need their sleep! As a general courtesy, do consider telling your neighbours if you are planning a party, or perhaps invite them to come along too!! In most cases, noise nuisance is not really a police matter and should be reported to Environmental Health Officers at Mole Valley District Council. We do, however, receive a number of calls every year from disgruntled neighbours and members of the public when a party gets out of hand and could result in a breach of the peace. Alcohol is nearly always a contributory factor when police have to get involved. If young people are out and about going to parties, please try to ensure that these events are supervised by adults and that there is a control on alcohol being available. It is not a good idea to give young people a few beers to take to a party as it is illegal for them to be in possession of alcohol under the age of 18. If police were to stop them, the alcohol will be
confiscated and poured away. Parks and recreation grounds are also intended to serve the whole community and it can be intimidating if large groups of people gather on them without warning and behave inconsiderately. If anyone feels intimidated or threatened in any way, do call the police on 999. Some communities have already asked police to consider anti-social behaviour on local recreation grounds as priority issues and we will always try to attend if possible. Littering can also be a problem on recreation grounds and on local streets in general. If reported to police we normally refer the matter to the relevant person at Mole Valley District Council. It is tempting on occasions to challenge littering when you see it happening but do consider your own safety and we would never recommend anyone putting themselves in a position where they could receive abuse. If you have any concerns with regards to littering please contact Mole Valley District Council on 01306 8855001, or online at www.molevalley.gov.uk At the risk of repeating ourselves, do please remember to remove any valuables from your car when you are out and about for the day. Opportunist thieves are known to target car parks at beauty spots and they know it is common practice to hide things under the seats and in the glove compartments. Please take all your valuable items with you if you are on a day out - hiding them in the boot is not an option! As always, if you need to contact your local policing team, call 101 and ask to speak with the officers for your local area. You can also email the team for Mole Valley on molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk. If you have an emergency to report, always call 999

We were delighted to welcome staff from Woodlands School to the library last month as part of a team building exercise. They taught us how to say simple phrases in Makaton such as “Good Morning”, “Thank you” and “How can I help you?” We hope to welcome some of the children from Woodlands School to the library in the future or visit them at school. Don’t forget! This year’s Summer Reading Challenge - Space Chase - launches on Saturday 13th July. Get ready for an out of this world adventure helping ‘The Rockets’ family track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! Children can sign up at any Surrey Library from 13th July and then read at least six library books of their choice over the next two months. They will collect special stickers and other rewards along the way - all for free. Special craft events are also planned
