Summer is certainly on the way, and I’m wondering if it will be as warm as last year? What a busy month June promises to be! Ashtead Rotary Village Day is on Saturday 8th June this year. I’m sure it will be a fabulous day. There will be a whole host of attractions including Stunt Riders, Cherished Cars, Falconry and Maypole Dancing to name but a few…. More details can be found within, do see our centre pages. I’ve put in an order for the sun to shine, so fingers crossed! As well as this, we include details of many other wonderful events taking place locally, these include the ‘Bookham Open Gardens’ which takes place on Sunday 16th June, the Leatherhead Duck Race, and a concert by Ashtead Choral Society too! We are delighted to welcome ‘The Book Potato’ book shop to Leatherhead town centre. Owned and run by co-authors and owners Tom & Carrie, this is a delightful new addition to the town. Specialising in supporting independent authors, as well as stocking an eclectic selection of other contributions for your enjoyment - see pages 24/25. Tom & Carrie have kindly offered to provide us with monthly book reviews which I very much look forward to sharing with you. I know many of you will join me in thanking Be Kassapian from ‘Be in the Kitchen’ for all the fabulous recipes that she has provided us with over the past year or so. Be has decided to take a break from being featured in the Ashtead & Leatherhead Local due to her demanding schedule which now also includes a fair chunk of time spent studying. We wish you all the very best Be, and we really appreciate all the culinary inspiration you’ve sent our way. xx But do not despair, we wouldn’t leave you recipe-less! So to carry on where Be left off, we are delighted to welcome Jackie Mazur of ‘Delicious Dishes’ to our pages. Thank you for joining us Jackie, we are looking forward to your contributions over the coming months… On a different note, We are very happy to be launching our beautifully refreshed, and shiny new Website this month! If you have a moment do pay us a visit at www.looklocalmagazine.co.uk. We hope you like it. Wishing you all a great month, and a Happy Father’s Day to all you local Dads too !

Property issues for couples on separation Local expert Mark Stevenson at TWM Solicitors explains some of the issues to consider when dealing with the family home in relation to a separation, divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership. Our conveyancing teams work closely with the family lawyers when it comes to advising or dealing with the family home. This may relate to the protection of rights where one party is not on the title of the family home, dealing with a transfer of equity or sale or advising on other aspects such as Stamp Duty Land Tax. A transfer of any property subject to a mortgage will require the lender’s consent. It is common place these days for the mortgage lender to have a note entered on to the title which prohibits any transfer or dealing without their written consent. When a relationship breaks down it is important to find out what the lender will or will not agree to at the outset. The Family Proceedings Rules require a lender to be served with any Court application involving a property subject to a mortgage. The Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) rules are complex and often have an effect that a person was not expecting.

For example, a married couple separate but do not embark on formal proceedings to end their marriage. The family home is in Mr A’s sole name which he is going to continue to retain. Mrs A decides to purchase a flat worth £250,000. Mrs A has never owned property registered in her name. Mrs A believes she is a first time buyer and can claim relief, meaning a SDLT bill of zero. She is mistaken. The Finance Act 2003 states that a purchaser will be liable to pay a surcharge on a purchase as her spouse would. Mrs A is “connected” to Mr A by virtue of marriage, therefore Mrs A would be liable to the higher rate which is a SDLT bill of £10,000. Further, if an interest in a property is held by a child under 18 (which necessarily has to be under a trust) then that interest is treated as if it were bought or held by the child’s parents which can also have adverse tax consequences on the parents sending them into the surcharged rate if they purchase a property and are not replacing their main residence. For further information, please contact Mark Stevenson, Partner in our Leatherhead office.

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK

CHAIRMAN’S FAREWELL We enjoyed a successful AGM in the Village Hall in April with more than 160 Fetcham residents turning out. But there was sadness too as this was the last AGM presided over by Susanne Taylor, our Chairman for the past three years. She has much to be proud of, and we have much to be thankful for. Susanne brought huge energy and commitment to the role, always seeking answers from local official bodies on our behalf, but also finding the time to champion environmental causes such as the Mill Pond and the Splash. She also did a fine job in building links between the FRA and other local voluntary organisations. Members of some of these groups have joined our committee, so under our new Chairman, Tim Waller, we are well represented to meet future challenges. None of this is possible however without the continuing support of our members. Our apologies then to those of you who came to our AGM but were e

unable to get a seat. We mustered all the chairs the hall could offer, but we promise to do better next time! On the subject of saying sorry, the AGM was notable for the gracious apology delivered by one of our guest speakers, Zoe Channon of the Surrey Wildlife Trust, over the plans put forward last autumn for a ‘glamping’ site in Norbury Park. The scheme provoked more than a hundred letters of protest. Zoe told us that although the plan was intended as a way of generating income, it was not well thought out and she apologized for the whole approach. We are also grateful to our other speakers, notably Inspector Karen Coyne of Surrey Police, and Mole Valley commander, who highlighted the spate of vehicle crime which has hit our area. Many people renewed their annual membership on the night, but if you have yet to do this, please don’t forget. It’s easy to fill in the Join and Renew form below, or alternatively go to www.fetchamresidents. co.uk and follow the link to membership. Thank you.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Ashtead Tree Wardens At this year’s Ashtead Village Day on Saturday 8th June, Ashtead Tree Wardens will again be sharing a stall with Ashtead Residents’ Association. We will be running the popular “Tree of the Year” competition and would like your nominations in advance, please. Your nominated tree needs to be in Ashtead and can be on public or private land but, if the latter, it must be clearly visible from a road or path. We need a photo and location of the tree and, on 8th June, we will invite residents to vote for their favourite. Last year’s winner was the Norwegian Maple in Moat Court and the 2017 winner was The Murreys’ Oak. It is suggested that if millions of trees were planted globally, and rain forest destruction halted, it might help to offset global warming by locking up carbon dioxide. The Woodland Trust is working hard to produce native saplings with the aim of increasing the amount of forested land in the UK to 19% from its current level of 13%. Unfortunately, as fast as new trees are being planted, others are being felled. In recent years in Ashtead, many mature trees have been lost from our streets and, while the Tree Wardens work hard to plant new trees to replace them, there is very little land available and planting is mostly restricted to grass verges. Many residents would like a tree planted outside their house but the process we must go through to get the various permissions is laborious and time consuming. We have worked tirelessly with Surrey County Council to establish protocols to streamline the process, only to find that the policy has changed again this year, and we now have to liaise with Mole Valley. There are 40 applications in the pipeline and we apologise for this further delay to anyone hoping to have a tree planted soon.

14 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - June 2019

Although residents are not allowed to plant in verges without permission, you can of course plant in your own garden, and we can offer advice on suitable tree varieties and planting. It is also important to plant UK-grown trees because so many pests and diseases have been imported. A number of pests are threatening our native trees, such as the Oak Processionary Moth; leaf miner on horse-chestnuts; and Ash dieback, a virus that is killing ash trees, many of which are being felled as a precautionary measure. There are many websites detailing all the horrors that are threatening our trees, affecting biodiversity and habitat and, if the trees die or are felled, contributing to global warming. We all need to be alert for any activity to remove trees, unless they are dangerous. In an emergency, Mole Valley Council can protect them with a tree preservation order (TPO) as a planning application needs to be submitted and approved before a tree with a TPO can be felled. If you know of a tree that offers significant amenity value to our community, we can discuss with MVDC whether a TPO might be placed on the tree for its long-term protection. Every second Monday of the month, the Tree Wardens spend a few hours tending to trees in open spaces and on verges. If you know of any trees that would benefit from some care and attention, or you would like to join us and help with our work, please do get in touch. Please contact us at treewardens@ashteadresidents.org.uk with your favourite tree nominations, offers of help, or queries. Christine Kerton and Keith Lelliott Ashtead Tree Wardens

Tom Carter, from Bookham, and Carrie Bevins, from Fetcham, started bookpotato.org in 2018. Our online shop was set up as a platform to sell independent titles alongside the well known, mainstream ones (we have access to sell over 6 million titles through our wholesalers, so most traditionally published books are easily obtained within 1-3 days). We are very proud pioneers of specialising in indie (independent) titles, we ensure they are all a good standard prior to a selling agreement, and are extremely excited about the quality of the indie books we are offering. A new year and a new opportunity landed in our lap. The sad news about Bartons Books closing, presented an opportunity for BookPotato to fill this much loved independent bookshop void in the Leatherhead community. We had not really intended on opening a physical shop that soon after starting BookPotato, and the finances were tremendously tight due to this. However, we have received an overwhelmingly positive response from the Leatherhead community, as well as the Local Council and Peter Snell himself (retiring owner of Bartons Books); the opportunity was simply too good to miss! We have every intention to continue supporting indie authors and illustrators, but can now expand to support local traders and to give all ages of the community a place to come and enjoy books, get support in creating books, and to share experiences.

24 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - June 2019

We currently offer: • All independent titles are cheaper with BookPotato than Amazon. • If you find a book cheaper in another high street location, we’ll refund the difference. • Quiet Reading Areas. • Pre-loved books. • Computer Creative Design Courses - ClubKuler facilitate these fun and creative courses that supports learning for school aged children through books and technology, enhancing outcomes in line with the national curriculum and allows them to create their own t-shirt or mug. • 10% discount for all local book club members. • Upcoming events, book readings and signings for all ages - sign up to Hot Potato News! to be kept up to date on what is coming up. • Teas, coffees and cakes coming VERY soon! we invite you sit and enjoy any book in our pre-loved section while enjoying a drink and cake, then simply return the book to the shelf or buy it as you leave. We’re child friendly, dog friendly and massive supporters of the Leatherhead Theatre and the Local History Society (we are able to offer local history titles that are not currently available on Amazon). We offer fantastic discounts to schools and nurseries when using BookPotato for books and our in-house computer creative design courses.

JUNE BOOK REVIEWS Natir Whitebridge: A Grain of Respect by Ameel Koro This book certainly tackles some difficult and dark subjects and the author does not shy away from graphic detail. This beautifully written story describes Natir’s ongoing abuse as a slave in the hands of some hideous characters. Natir, herself, does come across as a little naïve at times but this does not take away from the reader being completely captivated by her and her horrendous situation. The author is very talented at ‘world building’ and the characters are all well developed, the story is certainly unique and I simply couldn’t put this book down. I am looking forward to reading the next in this series when it is released. This book is for someone who enjoys a darker, more intense read. Fans of Outlander or Game of Thrones should definitely read Natir Whitebridge. A Salute to Fetcham - The Story of a Surrey Village in World War One by Lyn Rozier and Janice Steel The book is a tribute to the people of Fetcham a small village of about 450 people during the great war. The painstaking research of photos and press clipping gives the reader an insight into how this small village sacrificed members to the armed forces, and supplied many volunteers who served as nursing orderlies in the military hospitals. The school log gives an insight into the daily life of the village children and the lessons they would have been taking. This book also follows the tragedy of the Fetcham rector’s son who was to lose his life serving with the Coldstream guards, and then the rector himself whose ship was torpedoed off Egypt while serving as army Chaplin. Prague Spring by Simon Mawer (new release) This is a very interesting read. Set in Prague during 1968, Mawer offers insightful details of a real historical event using fiction. This is a beautifully woven story about two couples, British hitchhikers from Oxford who decide to travel through Europe on a whim and a British diplomat and his Czech lover, who find themselves immersed in the political events of Prague Spring, a period of political liberalisation in Czechoslovakia lead by Dubcek. The story starts a little slowly then gathers pace and momentum, building suspense and keeping the reader absorbed in the events while also examining what people are willing to risk for their freedom, and for others. This book is very well written and would be enjoyed by anybody who is interested in the social and political events of this time.

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

Personalised email and economical upgrades ... Recently a number of large volume email providers have closed their services usually due to the cost of providing the service being too great for any rewards which may be returned. These companies include O2, Tesco and Which. You may be asking what benefit could the email providers be gaining? The general answer is a simple oneyou give them permission to “read” your emails and provide contextual advertising, this is agreed in their terms and conditions when you sign up to their service. This is the reason why the likes of Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo are keen for your email traffic, for example- if you are in correspondence with someone about a holiday - you may see banner adverts usually in your web browser from holiday firms, the holiday firm would have paid for this advert or “impression”. This is evidence of contextual advertising. Changing your email address and notifying your contacts can be headache, to mitigate a recurrence of this, a way around it is to purchase your own email address - also know as domain name. Once bought this address is yours forever (assuming subscriptions are maintained) By way of example let’s say your name is Jane Walter, you could purchase (subject to availability) the domain name “walter-family.co.uk”, and your email address could be jane@walter-family.co.uk. The beauty of this arrangement is that this is yours forever and should the suppling firm decide that email isn’t their “thing”, you can move it to another provider. You may be thinking this arrangement is expensive and exclusive to companies, but you would be wrong. To purchase the domain name and have it registered to you for 2 years is only £35.00 (+vat)- then it is necessary to have the email service added, and this can be a little as £25 per year. For less than the cost of filling your car up with fuel you have an email address and email service for life, additionally you can add further email accounts for mum, dad, the kids and so on. Low cost computer upgrades The thought of moving all your data onto a new machine can cause palpitations to many. A way to avoid this is to upgrade your existing machine. Windows 10 and Mojave are reasonably accepting when it comes to running on old hardware. To remove the frustration of a slow running machine, a great option is to replace your current hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSDs), the performance boost is impressive and is said to be upto 20 times quicker- which is pretty astonishing. SSD’s have fallen greatly in price so the cost of the upgrade and us to copy all your data to the SSD could be way less than buying a new machine. Please call for more information. This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

25th Anniversary Celebration

On Thursday 25th April at Woodlands Park Hotel, Dyscover celebrated it’s 25th Anniversary (Actual birthday 27th April) They were celebrating 25 years of Dyscover, a local specialist aphasia charity, set up by the charity’s founder and president, Gill Jackson MBE to offer people with this life changing, long term and complex speech & language condition, on-going support. Friends and supporters of Dyscover attended the afternoon tea fundraiser. The 118 guests included Mayor Shweta Kapadia and her husband, Consort Ramesh Kapadia from Elmbridge, Chairman Raj Haque of Mole Valley District Council and Mayor and Mayoress Neil and Ann Dallen as well as original volunteers and very early beneficiaries of the organisation. Guests enjoyed a Pimms and elderflower drinks reception with jazz musicians ‘Rag A Jazz’ playing in the background. Traditional afternoon tea was served after a brave and humbling presentation from Suzie Cope, who

30 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - June 2019

described to the audience how acquiring aphasia at aged 45 has impacted her life and family and how with the support of Dyscover she has been able to overcome many of the barriers this condition presents and is now able to volunteer for Dyscover as a ‘Buddy’ to new beneficiaries joining one of Dyscover’s speech therapist led support groups. The tea was accompanied by some singers who enlivened the audience, ready for an auction which included a 3 ball at Wisley golf club, a champagne canal trip and Cocktails at Zedel Brasserie in Soho. The celebration ended with a fantastic raffle with both the auction and raffle raising over £1800! Dyscover were thrilled with the local support this event generated and are keen make strong community links in and around Leatherhead following their HQ move to Leatherhead Court in 2018. Ashtead Good N E I G H B O U R S

Heard the name but not sure what we do? I was the same until a few years ago and recently retired with a few spare hours in a busy “retirees” life, I began to delve a little deeper and this is what I found! Ashtead Good Neighbours, or as we know it, AGN, is a voluntary organisation started nearly 15 years ago and managed by a Team of ten volunteers but with the huge support of another 145 “active” volunteers. These volunteers very kindly donate a few hours of their time each month to help Ashtead residents who are in need of “neighbourly” help to mainly drive and accompany them to hospital appointments, the GP, a chiropodist or dentist. Once a month, AGN volunteers host a Sunday “tea party” for 6 AGN Clients who live on their own and may be lonely at weekends. These few hours give them the opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of others over “tea and cake”. In 2018, AGN completed 1748 jobs for 365 clients and without volunteers, these lovely people would certainly have struggled.

Are you a driver with a few hours to spare each month? Volunteering for AGN is enjoyable and certainly fulfilling. Your commitment is flexible and there is no pressure to carry out any job unless it suits you. Our volunteers come from all age groups and a few hours, on an occasional basis, makes a huge difference to the local community and, as a volunteer, know that you will meet some interesting people with fascinating stories to tell! Most volunteers opt to carry out one or two jobs per month. To find out more about AGN, take a look at our new website:

“We in the Rotary Club of Ashtead are delighted with the coverage we receive in the A&L Local for our various activities. Clearly Ashtead Rotary Village Day is our major event and our biggest charity fundraiser but we also appreciate coverage of our other initiatives and in particular we like the opportunity to communicate details of the good causes to which we devote the monies we raise. The magazine really lives up to its slogan - ‘Never underestimate the importance of community’”

Word reached us here at Look Local, that The Swan Inn Pub in Claygate had been taken over by the popular London chef Jose Pizarro recently, so we went along to find out more. Upon arrival we were met by General Manager, the lovely Huw Johnson, who was previously managing Jose’s Bermondsey Street restaurant before moving to run The Swan. The bar area is very roomy, the tables well spaced and has a very relaxed feel. There was a gentleman sitting quietly with his drink and working on his I-pad, another sitting reading the paper, a small group of friends having a drink and sharing some Tapas, and others just having a drink and a chat. Whilst you can sit and eat anywhere in the Swan, the main dining area is offset from the bar and you can prebook these tables. The Swan has a really lovely traditional English pub feel with a modern twist and the menu reflects this.

The menu is inspiring and very flexible. Our lovely waitress for the evening, Kaz, was very knowledgeable and was able to talk us through the menu choices. Mostly made up of a wide selection of tapas there are a handful of more traditional menu choices with a special Jose twist, such as Fish & Chips. Whilst we waited for our meal to arrive we nibbled on Gordal olives stuffed with blood orange, and ciabatta with a bowl of olive oil for dipping. Heaven! We had chosen the Presa Iberica (100% acorn fed Iberico pork) with baby potatoes, pimenton, to share and a selection of tapas. Our meal arrived and we sampled the delicious delights that this lovely pub has to offer complimented by a bottle of the house red Syrah Cuvee. It really is a lovely way to share food with friends. We finished our meal with a bowl of Spanish strawberries served with vermouth vinegar, white chocolate & pistachios (Yes! That really does work!) and Almond & Prune tart served with Sherry

cream. A family of four was on the table next to us, a couple with their two young daughters. What a lovely way for them to eat out and no doubt accommodate all the differing appetites and tastes that a family has. Comfortably busy, the pub offers a relaxed atmosphere, flexible dining, excellent food and great service. In addition to all this there is a really lovely outside seating and eating area. It feels like a secret hideaway. Enclosed by high fencing and walls it is a surprisingly peaceful area despite the busy road nearby. This area also brings extra culinary delights! There is a char grill alongside a Green Egg (a smoker and charcoal barbecue) and a Paella stand. The paella stand has a wood fire in the centre, similar to a fire pit, (where the paella pan can stand) and is surrounded by a cast iron griddle for cooking all the components for your paella. These fabulous additions to the core menu will mostly be in use Friday evenings, Saturdays and

Sundays, weather permitting. Roll on Summer I say. I cannot wait to go back when the weather is better to try this part of the inspirational dining experience The Swan offers. Part of the garden will be available for private hire, so you could have your very own Paella party with your private chef for the event! Mmm! When’s my birthday? Also available for hire is a private dining room upstairs in the pub that seats up to 16. There will be special events coming up, with music, dancing etc. One of these will be a dinner on 10th July to celebrate Jose’s new book “Andalusia”. I cannot recommend a visit to the Swan enough. We had a fabulous evening and are planning a return visit very soon. Our thanks go to Huw and his team for making us so welcome. Girls HOPE for new Leader ARE YOU INTERESTED?

The 24 members of 1st Ashtead Guides are hoping for a new leader, as Pauline Dulake, who has led the group for the past decade stands down. The group of 10 to 14 year olds meet every Tuesday evening in term time and enjoy a whole range of social activities and fun together, from cooking to outdoor adventure, and also work for Guides badges which build their skills and confidence. Without volunteers to help and lead, Guides units such as this one will struggle to continue. Pauline says: It is such an enjoyable role, to be with these girls, seeing them develop into independent souls over the years is such a pleasure. As a leader, the benefits for me have included being able to share my skills and interests and inspire the girls to try new activities. I have

also treasured the friendship of the Unit leadership team. The new leader could be an individual or friends who want to do some volunteering in the community together. I am sure they too will get so much out of it, as well as allowing this great group of girls to continue Guiding. While there is some planning involved, the team of leaders across the various groups share ideas and are assisted by a great deal of resources from the Guide Association. If you are interested in this role, which begins in September 2019, or would like to hear more detail or come along to a meeting, please email us at: mail@ashteadgirlguiding.org.uk or register your interest here: www.girlguiding.org. uk/get-involved/become-a-volunteer

Member Society of

THE ARTS SOCIETY

In April, 49 members experienced the first of our two cultural tours, namely to the historic city of Lincoln. In addition to visiting the wonderful historic city itself with its stunning Cathedral, we squeezed in some fascinating places en-route, such as the charming town of Stamford, Burghley House, & the National Memorial Arboretum (see the photo of members at Lincoln Cathedral). We enjoyed the first of our four visits this year to places of interest, namely to Standen & Saint Hill Manor on 9th May, & we are also looking forward to a visit to Taplow Court & Dorney Court on 12th June. The Arts Society has been very active in promoting arts projects in Ashtead’s primary schools. In April Angie helped the pupils at West Ashtead Primary School to produce fish themed models, which the school fired in its own kiln.

For further information about the society & the programme for next year, take a look at our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk

Visitors will find a welcoming atmosphere including coffee and biscuits, and enjoy a great lecture given by a renowned expert. We meet in the Peace Memorial Hall on the 3rd Tuesday (except August), doors open at 09.30 for 10.30am. The charge is £5 for non-members but first-timers may attend free as our guest.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead To burn or not to burn? That is the question. What is the most sustainable way to deal with your green garden waste? The options are to burn or compost it in the garden, or to use the Council’s brown bin system and get it composted at an industrial site. There is some debate as to whether the actual best option for the material in the brown bin system is for it to be burnt in an incinerator for heat and electricity generation as this avoids methane production in the composting process, or to be industrially composted – but that is not for us here. Unfortunately, there is no clear answer between composting at home or using the Council’s brown bin system, but having a bonfire in the garden is definitely the least sustainable option. Bonfires avoid the production of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas), but do create a local nuisance (smoke and large particles causing poor air quality.) If you really must do this then as a minimum stick to MVDC’s recommended practice of limiting the time (after 6.00 p.m.) and frequency and burning only dry material (see https:// www.molevalley.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=17776 ). And making sure it is fully extinguished before leaving it!! The issue for many of us is whether to compost at home or use the Council’s food waste caddie and brown bin system. Where cooked food waste or meat residues are concerned, the caddie system helps keep biodegradable material out of the general waste system (and this helps avoid methane emissions from the landfilled waste) and minimises the chance of rodent problems in any home composting operation. However, for most of us where garden waste is concerned the answer depends on how much time and space we have for home composting in a corner of the garden. The brown bin system is reliable and produces a good quality compost that can be used for soil improvement and in some cases goes into commercial peatfree compost products. But for anyone who has the space, home composting has many advantages and there are numerous options on how to do it depending on the investment you want to make in it. Two simple home-made wooden bins are the absolute base line (one being filled, the other maturing) with added benefit if you can get access to the bins to occasionally turn the contents over (it speeds up the process). Beyond that there are many levels of sophistication from wormeries to hot-bins and rotary drums. If you want to get some good advice then have a look at what Essex County Council have put together, see https://www.essex. gov.uk/Environment%20Planning/Documents/Home_Composting.pdf. Whatever you decide to do, even with green garden waste, go with the waste management hierarchy first, try to minimise (bit difficult in gardening), if not, re-use; failing that, recycle (home composting, the Council brown bin and the green waste bin at Randalls Road counts as this) and as a final resort, dispose (which is your bonfire!) W.I. Meetings

ASHTEAD W.I. MAY MEETING REPORT We were pleased to be back in our main hall again this evening to browse through our well filled book-sale tables, and to welcome 2 visitors, as well as Judith Bartley, President of Leigh W.I. who will be our representative at the AGM in June. This year’s Resolutions are ‘Don’t Fear the Smear’ and ‘A Call Against the Decline of Local Bus Services.’ These were discussed and voted on, with Judith to vote for amendments if necessary on the day. Many thanks were due to some of our committee who organised a most enjoyable day visit to Hatfield House. Another planned outing will be to the Carpet of Flowers in Arundel. We certainly got to thinking about what we were wearing this evening, when our speaker, Mrs Jo Mabbutt, explained why and how colour can affect us. We were taken from ancient cave paintings and natural dyes in early fabrics, through mediaeval minerals with egg - tempura, through time to today’s use of adverts where subliminal power of

colours is evident. Blue is used by many health organisations and implies authority and reliability, red raises the heartbeat, is powerful and confident, orange shows adventure and social communication, purple is a ‘royal’ colour, and used by one of our favourite chocolate producers who have bought a specific colour purple number. It seems we need to take care where we use specific colours in our homes, and which ones we chose to wear! After our break, with more time to again browse through all the books, we had details of the various special interest sub-groups, our come-along lunch and then our raffle, which included many very pretty plants which had decorated our tables. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 5th June, 7.15 for 7.30 at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, when our Garden Group will be holding a plant sale. The speaker will be Dr. Geoffrey Mead on ‘Resorting to The Coast’.

MOLE VALLEY W.I. MAY MEETING REPORT

Our President, Ann Layman welcomed everyone to our May meeting. After general business was concluded and birthday wishes given to those who had a birthday in May we moved to the presentation, by our member Margaret Barnes, of this years resolutions. The decline in local bus services and Don’t fear the smear. Much discussion was generated by both topics. This was followed by a break for tea. After tea we were treated to an entertaining demonstration, again by one of our members Stella Phipps, on planting up different containers with various plants. These included an ancient saucepan planted with herbs, a terracotta bowl

planted with sempervivums and a pretty cage with trailing summer plants. This was followed by a plant sale of plants grown by members. Our members recently enjoyed a visit to the Houses of Parliament and are now looking forward to a visit to Hurst Castle at the beginning of June. We are a friendly group and welcome new members. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Fetcham Village Hall 7.45. We have various activities, badminton, knit and natter, scrabble and rambling to name a few. Further details are on our website www. molevalleywi.btck.co.uk/ From Linda Hicks

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. APRIL REPORT The April meeting celebrated our 64th birthday with Committee supper and a toast. Anne surprised us all with a table of home made Easter boxes containing a colour foil wrapped egg as a gift for everyone attending. Sheila took time to promote her annual Auction which will be held on the 10th May. Numbers were discussed for Betty’s regular Worthing outing where we have the company of some of the Fetcham Townswomens’ Guild. Our speaker was the well regarded Jonathan Jones who came dressed as Rudyard Kipling and told his life as if in the first person. We travelled through his difficult childhood and appalling grief when he lost first one of his daughters, and later

his son during the Great War. The narration was interspersed with poetry and ended with the thought provoking ‘IF’. As well as the popular Brass Band concert, Jane held our first pub lunch and 16 of us gathered at the Old Plough, Stoke D’Abernon. A seasonal newbie for next month is Marion’s garden safari and it is hoped that several will be visited. At our May meeting Resolutions will be the key subject, followed Mr. Jonathan Jones by refreshments and Anne’s light hearted Bingofest. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month (except August) in Fetcham Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Do pop in to say hallo - it could be the start of an enjoyable adventure. MAUREEN WEBB

HOME WANTED! Pedro

Hello!! My name is Pedro and I’m around five years old. Not much else is known about my background as I came in to Cats Protection after being hit by a car. I had a few broken teeth and a concussion but luckily that’s all. I was scared of people at first but now I love human companionship. I love my food and enjoy nothing more than a comfy lap and lengthy grooming sessions. I also have a playful and inquisitive side; I love playing football with my toys and if you leave a box or cupboard door open, I’m sure to jump in. I am very affectionate and sociable; I wouldn’t like to be on my own all day. I’m a bit of a sensitive soul and I need a quiet home with no small children or other cats. Once I know that I’m safe with you, I’ll be your best friend for life. If you feel you can give Pedro the loving home he so desperately deserves please contact Sue on 020 8390 3165. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Worms, Ashes And Bones: From Darwin To Today At Abinger EMMA CORKE, former president of the Surrey Archaeological Society, fascinated the Leatherhead & District Local History Society by talking about discoveries on the Iron Age and Roman site at Cocks Farm, Abinger. Emma’s great great grandfather, Thomas Henry Farrer, bought Abinger Hall at Cocks Farm in 1875. His gardeners soon discovered the remains of a Roman building on the site and archaeological excavations in the following year uncovered six rooms, including one with a coarse-tessellated floor from Roman times. Farrer was friends with Charles Darwin, the founder of modern understanding about evolution of species, and Darwin’s son Horace married Farrer’s daughter Ida. In 1880 Horace produced a plan of the Cocks Farm site. Darwin himself was interested in investigating the role of earthworms in movement of ancient stone structures. Nothing more was done until a tree uprooted in the great storm of October 1987 was seen to have the corner of a stone-built room in its roots, together with painted wall-plaster and fine tesserae. Three years of excavation in 1995-97 by Surrey Archaeological Society found a large late- Roman building, which led to the site being declared a

76 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - June 2019

Scheduled Ancient Monument. So many questions remained that in 2009 English Heritage gave permission for five more years of excavation on the buildings, which has found a multi-phase, probably courtyard, villa. The work has revealed artefacts from the Mesolithic period from 12,000 to 3000 BC onwards and provides evidence that the site was occupied and farmed continuously from the Neolithic through to the 19th century. Thirty Iron Age grain storage pits, one of them 3.4m in diameter, indicate that the site was the centre of a thriving network of farms in that era.

The owners in the Roman period were clearly rich but we can only speculate who they were, how they made their money or how they used the villa. The team has found remains of sacrificed animals and many human cremation burials. The 2016 excavation revealed five complete calf skeletons. The first guess was that they were an ancient sacrifice but carbon dating shows they were buried around the Tudor or Stuart periods. Possibly they died of rinderpest and were buried to protect the rest of the herd. For more information on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Adventures with Mud By Selina Botham

n ha ! r t ht pe ig ea etr Ch arp c

time had come to replace all the rotting fences too and work on the important background structure of the garden. It was ‘freeing’ to gain this extra space and light and to reconnect with the further views from our garden. I should have done this years ago.. I thought to myself… The pond and garden room and deck will stay intact and some of the paths and terrace are still part of the new plan, but the lawn will be levelled and re-turfed and I’m excited to be planting new flower beds and new trees. Part of the new design is inspired by a river and there will be a ‘bare foot path’ which will meander through the ‘river’ planting of silvers, whites and blues. The textures underfoot and the soft planting around will make this a sensory experience and a place to connect fully with nature. I’ve also designed another surprise feature which I’ll share in the months to come. It has been an experience to go though the process myself and I’ll share the highs and lows of the transformation with the Look Local readers, so you can follow the development of the new garden from devastation to new life. In the early stages the mud was terrible and the progress seemed slow and painful. I always suggest to clients that they keep one of the water colour visuals of the design handy so they don’t lose hope through this part of the build and I’ve done this….still the mud is really bad… Here are a few photos of the clearance. More to follow in subsequent articles as the new garden takes shape. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk and her facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham shares her own experience of garden transformation. When our beautiful mature weeping willow tree suddenly died of Honey fungus disease in September last year we realised that the time had come for a change to our own garden. We’d opened our garden under the National Garden Scheme in 2015 and also for local ‘open garden’ events and it had even been featured on BBC Gardener’s World. We really loved it and had thought it couldn’t be better, however when the willow died I knew I needed to think again. I decided to follow my own advice (usually given to clients) and rip out the huge leylandii hedge as well as a 3m high and wide laurel hedge which surrounded the garden on two sides. This was wasting lots of space and causing a maintenance headache which we’d put up with for years. The

CHARITY QUIZ TITLE

(photo shows 'Densa', winners of a special 'Curry & Quiz Night' held at Fetcham Tandoori on Thurs 25th April 2019)

On Thursday 25th April 2019, over 50 enthusiastic quizzers took part in a special Curry & Quiz Night at the Fetcham Tandoori Indian restaurant in Fetcham. After four challenging rounds of ten questions each, on subjects ranging from ‘General Knowledge’ and ‘Colours’ to ‘Current Affairs’ and ‘Drinks’, together with a special 20-point picture round on Surrey landmarks, ‘Densa’ emerged triumphant out of the ten teams taking part, with a very impressive score of 47 points out of a possible 60, narrowly beating ‘The Vincibles’ and ‘Quiz Grayling’s Party Boat’ into joint second place, both with a score of 43 points. ‘The Dribblers’ picked up the booby prize for coming last, albeit with a still very respectable score of 30 points. As well as the quiz itself, everyone present enjoyed an excellent two-course Indian meal and a raffle

helped to raise £800 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Rainbow Trust, the two charities chosen for support by Councillor Raj Haque during his year as Chairman of Mole Valley District Council. Event organiser and Quizmaster, Simon Edmands, said he was very grateful to everyone who took part in the event, together with those people who very kindly donated prizes for the raffle. For further information about the Motor Neurone Disease Association, please visit www.mndassociation.org. For further information about the Rainbow Trust, please visit www. rainbowtrust.org.uk.

Crime Reduction NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

In spite of many people taking sensible precautions to protect their homes and property, we have seen a disappointing rise in the number of reports received relating to domestic burglaries. The key points to remember is that burglars like to work unobserved and as quickly as possible. Most burglars tend to be opportunistic; i.e. they see a vulnerable property and take a chance on seeing if they can gain easy access to steal. The majority of burglars gain access from insecure premises via the ground floor at the rear of a property so; the simplest deterrent is to make these common access points as secure as possible. Obviously, this means ensuring that doors and windows are securely locked when you are not at home but there are some other simple things to consider which can make your home less “desirable” as a target. The first is the external visibility of your home. A clear line of sight from the roadside to the front of your home is a natural deterrent as there is a reduced opportunity for a burglar to work unobserved. Also, the installation of some simple dusk till dawn lighting at the front of your property removes pools of shadow which are very popular with burglars who want to avoid being seen. I don’t mean motion activated high intensity lighting - just low-level lighting that provides good visibility and conveys an impression that your home is occupied. Side gates need to be high enough to deter climbing and preferably secured with bolts or a padlock lower down on the door or gate, to minimise the chances of someone being able to lean over and unbolt the gate. Avoid placing wheelie bins near back gates too, as they make a very useful climbing aid.

Consider registering your property on a free National database such as Immobilise. This is a secure system where you can register any of your property and even upload photographs of items. Check out Immobilise.com or contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team, who can provide guidance and practical support in getting you started with registering your property. You could also consider using forensic property marking on any items of value, from laptops and bikes to paintings and jewellery. When any items are recovered from suspects of burglaries, it is checked to see if there is any forensic marking on items and this is a really helpful way of getting items returned to their rightful owners. With garden sheds, always make sure that they are locked and secured, preferably with a sturdy padlock and consider painting any gardening equipment with your postcode and house number. This makes items far less desirable to a would-be thief. If you are considering installing an alarm system, I would suggest that you get a few quotes and check out the advice available on the National Security Insepctorate’s website www.nis.org.uk, which can give impartial information about the various types of alarm systems that are available. Even a simple audible alarm, with clear signage to show that you have a security system in place is an excellent deterrent. If you would like further advice or even a free, impartial home security review then you can always contact me direct, either by phone to 101 Extension 30809, or by email to Neil.Clarke@surrey.pnn.police.uk

Regular users of Leatherhead Library will be gladdened to hear that the scaffolding and builders cages have gone! After months of work to repair the roof on the next door Register Office, access to the library, the disabled parking bays at the front and customer parking to the rear should all be much easier from now on! Good timing! We’re hoping lots of younger readers will soon be helping Surrey Libraries celebrate the 20th anniversary of our regular Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme will be SPACE CHASE, chosen to mark another important anniversary, 50 years since the first moon landing in 1969.
