You’ve gotta love this month! It signifies the beginning of spring; the clocks go forward on 29th and the trees are just about to burst into life after the dark winter months. What’s not to like? Let’s hope the worst of the weather is behind us this year! Leatherhead has certainly taken a bit of a bashing recently, with two awful storms hitting hard. The River Mole even making it to the national news when it’s banks burst in February when Hurricane Dennis took its toll. Coincidentally, we are delighted to include an interesting new weather feature for you this month too, welcoming local resident Bob Pritchard to our pages; Bob has been a career ‘weatherman’. Having been interested in the weather since a young age, he went on to work at the Met Office for many years, with 25 years in broadcasting the weather forecast on Radio 4 and Radio 5 live. He took early retirement 16 years ago but has remained very active in the subject. He was the editor of Weather Magazine (published by the Royal Meteorological Society) for five years and still writes monthly weather summaries for them. Bob has kindly offered to bring us regular weather related features. Thank you Bob I look forward to learning more... There is plenty to discover within our pages this month; great news from MVDC about their ‘Mole Valley Re-Fill Scheme’ which you can read about on page 18. As well as this, we have news about a fabulous initiative to take books to those who can’t make it to a library themselves. Read about Surrey Libraries Direct. Also included is information about a wonderful Patchwork Gardening Project; who are holding a free entry event which sounds lovely. The garden received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2019 and is well worth a visit and deserves some local support. See page 44 for details. If you fancy a night out, the ever popular ‘Ashtead Movie Night’ is coming up soon and Mr John Griffin has a treat in store with a fabulous Easter production too! (see page 49 for this) Details on A Mother’s Day Market are also included, that’s on page 51, in fact our pages are crammed with fabulous local events which I will leave you to discover for yourselves... Wishing you all a great month and remember to remember your Mothers on 22nd, Mother’s Day.

A CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY - It’s rare that we have not one, but two, consultations affecting our area taking place at the same time. Big plans for housing and health which stretch beyond the next decade could hardly be more important. We strongly urge you to follow the links below and make sure your views are heard. First, we have the Mole Valley Draft Local Plan the proposed development blueprint for the whole district until 2033. This identifies possible sites, including green belt land, for almost 5,000 new homes. Fetcham is earmarked for 55 of these, because we have relatively few sites. But our immediate neighbours in Leatherhead and Bookham are being asked to accommodate a further 2,000 between them. This is bound to have a big impact on our roads, schools and health services. If you haven’t already, please read the documents at futuremolevalley.org and make your voice heard before the consultation closes on March 23. Second, we have the consultation by Epsom and St Helier Hospital Trust on its plans for building a new £500m acute hospital. The preferred plan is to build

on a new site at Sutton. Epsom, the nearest major hospital to Fetcham, will stay, but without it’s A&E unit and maternity services. Although Epsom will retain 85% of its current services, life threatening conditions will be treated at Sutton. The options of siting the new hospital at Epsom or St Helier are also set out. Again, we are being asked to register our views, and you can do so at improvinghealthcaretogether. org.uk TUDOR MOTORS’ SITE - Mole Valley council issued the final Approval notice for the site on January 30, so as you read this in early March we would expect demolition work to have begun. It’s been a long and frustrating saga for residents and traders, but we trust we are, at last, on the way to seeing a high quality building on this prime site in the centre of the village. The development will provide eight 2-bed flats on the first and second floors, with a further four onebed affordable units on the ground floor with retail space. It is also a condition of the planning consent that a new pedestrian crossing is provided across the Cobham Road next to the building.

PRIMA DON NA

When was the last time you had a bra fitting... or perhaps you’ve never had one? Lingerie is the foundation of any outfit, yet it is well known that 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. A perfectly fitted bra can alleviate health problems, accentuate your waist and even make you drop a dress size! It will not only change the way you look, we guarantee it will make you feel amazing too. Victoria’s Little Bra Shop in the heart of Dorking, Surrey (est. for 6 years) is the go-to place for all your lingerie, swimwear and nightwear needs. Run by mother and daughter, the duo recently won the prestigious award of Best Boutique Style Lingerie Shop 2019 in the UK. Established in 2013, Vanessa and Victoria attribute their growing success to their professional, friendly and

caring approach. Fiona, from Hello Dorking, visited the boutique for a fitting in their upstairs boudoir: “This beautiful award winning boutique, really is very special. The stylish shop feels like a bedroom with well coordinated decor, big beautiful mirrors, vintage wardrobes and velvet curtain changing rooms. As I try on a few lovely bit and pieces, we discuss the world of women’s lingerie. We agree that underwear should feel like a second skin and make us feel really confident and content with our body shapes. It is great to have such an amazing shop on Dorking High Street where we know that we’re getting the very best care and attention.” If you would like to be fitted, please don’t be anxious but pop in to see the girls, no appointment necessary, and they will be delighted to meet you with a warm welcome guaranteed. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

15th Annual Ashtead Spring Clean

Saturday March 28th ARA has been organizing an Annual Spring Clean in Ashtead since 2005 based on a litter pick and now, if you walk round Ashtead you will see far less rubbish strewn around. A small army of local residents helps enormously during the year by regularly picking up litter as they are out and about. We are aware that the verges of surrounding main roads are a disgrace, but these are unfortunately outside our jurisdiction. This year we will be holding the litter pick as usual on 28th March but we would also like to change the emphasis of the Spring Clean. We all know that both Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and Surrey County Council have no spare cash and, while the verges still get mown, the cuttings are left on the pavement or gutter, composting down nicely to make a perfect medium for weeds. A different version of the Spring Clean would be to work with your neighbours in your own road, to tidy the verges and gutters, clean the road sign and cut back any foliage obstructing the pavement. Please let us know if you are doing your own local spring clean. We also need you to be our “eyes” and note and report the location of graffiti at graffiti@ ashteadresidents.org.uk and also let us know of any barriers or signs left behind after road works. There is also other work to do all the year round. • Ashtead Independent Cllr Alan Reilly has a squad of Alley Cleaners, all local residents, who cut back vegetation, and tidy the alleys. Contact him on 01372-802489 to assist or to report an overgrown alley. • Ashtead Tree Wardens have permission to prune verge trees where sight lines or pavements are obstructed, but only up to a height of 6ft. Contact them at treewardens@ashteadresidents.org.uk to join them or to report locations where street trees

need attention. If you would like to join a LITTER picking group near you on March 28th, please go to one of the venues listed on the ARA website ashteadresidents.org.uk (click on Spring Clean 2020 in the What’s New column) where there will be an ARA member or Local Ashtead Independent Councillor to meet you. For all litter picking activity wear boots or strong shoes, and bring thick protective gloves: bags, Hi Viz vests, and litter pickers will be provided. The rubbish bags will be collected from each area and brought back to the APMH car park. If you are working in the centre of the Village, please bring your bag back with you to the recycling area of the APMH car park. Coffee Special The landlady of our village pub, The Brewery Inn, has once again generously offered to host a get together in the back room of the pub, for anyone who has taken part in the Spring Clean. Tea or coffee will be served from 11.45 free of charge. Please join your ARA Committee members and Local Councillors there, after the work is done, and also meet other Ashtead residents who care about the Village. Please put the date in your diary now. Saturday morning, March 28th. If you have any queries or comments, please email springclean@ ashteadresidents.org.uk or call 01372-273393. Local Plan Public Consultation Please don’t forget to respond to MVDC’s public consultation on the draft Local Plan. The consultation closes on March 23rd so please visit https://futuremolevalley.org/ to have your say on what is being proposed on development in Ashtead. Please also let us know your views by emailing fmv@ashteadresidents.org.uk Christine Kerton - ARA Spring Clean Co-ordinator Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

New Water Refill Points Unveiled in Dorking & Leatherhead Mole Valley District Council Tackles Single-Use Plastic Waste.

Two water refill points were unveiled at the Swan Centre in Leatherhead and St Martin’s Walk in Dorking on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 February 2020 by Mole Valley District Council. Hundreds of reusable bottles were also handed out to passers-by in and around the shopping centres to help raise awareness about the importance of reducing single-use plastic waste. The refill points were funded by Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and the Surrey Environment Partnership, of which MVDC is a member. Representatives from both organisations, the shopping centres and SES Water were at the giveaway events to help raise local awareness of the wider need to tackle avoidable plastic waste. The installation of the first water refill points in Mole Valley means that, together with over 65 local businesses across the district that have signed up as Refill Stations, the opportunity for members of the public to access free drinking water has been given a huge boost. This most recent environment-related milestone forms part of MVDC’s local initiative, Refill Mole Valley. For information about Refill Mole Valley, the list of Refill Stations and details about how residents and businesses can help support the fight against plastic waste, visit www.molevalley.gov.uk/refill.

Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2020

Councillor Claire Malcomson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “I was delighted to be a part of the unveiling of the first two water refill points in Mole Valley, together with our partners Surrey Environment Partnership and SES Water. It was lovely to see members of the public filling their reusable bottles at the refill points, and I am sure they will see regular use; particularly with the warmer seasons coming soon. We will continue our work to eliminate avoidable singleuse plastics from MVDC-owned properties for the benefit of our environment.” Richard Keel, Deputy Manager at the Swan Shopping Centre, said: “The Swan Centre is pleased to be the chosen location for the fountain and to be part of this exciting and community-focused initiative between Mole Valley District Council, SES Water and Surrey Environment Partnership. I am sure that this facility will be welcomed by many users and also be a valuable asset in our effort to reduce single-use plastics.” Susannah Powell, St Martin’s Walk Shopping Centre Manager, said: “St Martin’s Walk Shopping Centre is proud to partner with Mole Valley District Council and SES Water in supporting an initiative to reduce single-use plastic water bottles, with a newly installed water filling station providing free highquality water to the public.”

NEED A NEW MACHINE?

What to look for when buying a Computer As Windows 7 has now come to the end of the line, you may be looking for a suitable replacement. We provide new and used Windows and Mac based solutions. When buying a Computer or Laptop there is a whole heap of jargon that people throw at you with an expectation that you should know what they are taking about - SSD’s, Ram, MHz, Wifi, HDMI and so it goes on. We have always felt this a very rude way to treat your fellow man, so yes, we can talk jargon with you but we can also talk in finest English to ensure your needs are best met. Initially, we will discuss with you what your needs are and what you want to do with the computer, and if there are any things you would like to do but are currently unable to like photo editing or creating that family video you have been promising. Here are a few pointers that you might appreciate knowing about, before you buy your new machine. The key componentsThe Processor or the CPU is the engine that powers the PC. It is advisable to buy the best that you can, as CPU’s are costly items and are not efficient to change or upgrade at a later stage. If your needs are for basic Word processing and Excel type work, plus some Internet browsing and email handling, a basic Intel, Core i3 CPU or AMD Ryzen 3 CPU would represent a good choice. If you are looking for something a bit more capable, a good all round home machine, we would usually advise either an Intel Core i5, i7 or i9 CPU. Being still more powerful, reflecting a similar numbering scale, Ryzen 5, 7 and 9, with the 7 and 9’s often reserved for more intensive power hungry activities like Virtual reality, Graphics or game play. There are model variations with in these CPU’s - but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Memory or Ram - The more the better, but this can usually be retro fitted. 4Gb of Ram is considered the bare minimum, going beyond 8Gb is often unnecessary for everyday use. The latest, fastest DDR4 memory is today’s standard fit and moves the performance of the machine on significantly, when compared to its earlier

counterparts, and will offer solid performance for years to come. Hard drives - TThe conventional mechanical hard drives have been using the same technology for around 20 years. They are very economic, have huge storage capacity but can be slow. Upgrade to a Solid State Hard Drive (SSD) and the performance is phenomenal. They work at 1520 times faster than the mechanical drives, they are more reliable (as they have no moving parts), but they cost more and have less storage capacity than the older type hard drives. If you need to store loads of data, a great solution is to have both in a machine. The SSD runs the Operating System and Programs and the mechanical drive stores your data. Graphics cards - Game players, photo and video editors and graphics users are better served by having a dedicated graphics card installed, in some cases the graphics card can cost as much as the computer. In most cases, using the onboard graphics is sufficient and should you wish to upgrade the graphics this can sometimes be retrospectively added into a PC, but unfortunately rarely on in a laptop. Operating System - Windows is the dominant system here, with Windows 10 being the preferred choice, as it works in a very efficient manner and is the industry dominant product. Unlike earlier versions Microsoft have stated that Windows 10 will be the operating system of the future, with the program being revised via updates rather than a distinctly separate new version. To date, we are on the 9th major version with a new edition being scheduled for the first half of 2020…. and yes, the updates are free of charge. Should you be using a version of Office, we would urge you to buy a new version of Office, if your current version is earlier than Office 2016, as Office 2013, 2010 and earlier have all come to the end of their mainstream support. Many customers think that the only way to purchase the new version is via an annual rental scheme, but this is not the case. We have the perpetual version for sale, and usually this provides a more economic solution.

This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Do You Enjoy Getting Lost In A Book But Can’t Get To A Library? There are few things that compare to the joy of getting lost in a really good book, or chatting about what you have just read. But what if age, ill health, mobility problems or caring responsibilities make it difficult for you to get to a library? Library Direct can help. Surrey Libraries and its dedicated volunteers work hard to make sure the library service can reach everyone, by allowing individuals to once again select their own books, and have volunteers deliver them right to their door. It is a free service for those who struggle to access their Surrey Library and comes with additional benefits such as extended loan periods and no overdue charges or fines. This offer also extends to audiobooks and large print books. All that clients need to do is let their volunteer know what they would like to borrow and then sit back, relax and wait for the books to be brought to them. In addition to having complete access to library stock, this services also helps to combat isolation by providing companionship. Volunteers will often stop for a drink and chat, and in many cases, form friendships with the people they are visiting. The service has helped change the lives of countless individuals. One Library Direct client says, “I can’t get out very much so the service is invaluable to me.” Another says, “I have always been a great reader so I am grateful to still have access to books.” As well as supporting individuals in their homes, we offer an opportunity for a variety of ‘community settings’ such as care homes, nursing homes, long term in-patient wards and rehabilitation centre, to provide a library service to their residents. This works with the setting choosing a variety of books online and then collecting them from an agreed Surrey library. We currently have volunteers looking for more clients in the Mole Valley area! If you think Library Direct is suitable for you or someone you know, you can now register for the service online. To register for Library Direct, or for more information, visit our webpage www.surreycc.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can call 01483 543 599 or email libraries@surreycc.gov.uk.

Whenever we are faced with a crisis in any area of life, reactions tend towards hype, then hysteria, with panic not far behind and all sense of perspective so easily gets lost. The undeniable trend to a warmer climate provides a clear example, with almost every weather event viewed with alarm. It sometimes seems that there is a belief that we never used to get ‘extreme’ weather. The link to extreme weather from a warming climate is at best tenuous. Floods have made the news this winter, but these are extremely common events in this country. Some of the worst include those of spring 1947 (when days of heavy rain following a snowy winter led to catastrophic floods over a wide area), September 1968, when older readers will no doubt recall the severe flooding from the River Mole following a weekend of torrential rain, and the very wet autumn of 2000 when large areas of the country were underwater for days. There are numerous only slightly less severe examples from earlier years. And we should remember that changes in land-use (including building on flood plains) are present-day factors - not to mention a media looking for every hint of such events when some earlier ones received little coverage.

WHAT’S ON

‘NOT THE EASIEST PLACE TO MANAGE – JUDEA!’ Pontius Pilate has never been a popular character, especially around Easter! Now he tells his own version of the events before and after the crucifixion of Jesus. First we see the tough, ruthless Roman Prefect, sent by his superiors to manage Judea which he describes as, ‘this god-forsaken hole!’ Then we learn about his problems dealing with awkward characters such as the Jewish religious leader, Caiaphas, and the difficulty of governing an unruly people. Even Claudia, his wife, causes him complications! Having begged Jesus to heal their son’s crippled foot, she has become a follower of ‘this man.’ Of course, Pilate doesn’t believe a word of it, despite the proof of his own eyes. At last comes the fateful meeting with Jesus, the significance of which Pilate does not fully appreciate until long after having washed his hands. By the end he is, perhaps, on the way to becoming a believer himself. Kenneth Clelland sees his 45-minute one-man play, ‘A Delicate Balance’ as his most important work. John Griffin says, “I think it is the most important rôle I have played. I want to bring it to as many audiences as possible.”

THE THREAD OF LOVE Copyright Sarah Lott, February 2020

www.thememorybook.co.uk sarah@thememorybook.co.uk | @thememorybook | facebook/thememorybook 01372 373844 | 07957 598348 Mothers have amazing stories to tell and hold many precious childhood memories safe. Why not capture some of those memories and discover a little more about your own wonderful mother or grandmother? Just give me a call for a chat. There are lots of ways I can help. MY MOTHER I love my mother. First it was a love Based on needs and warmth Then it turned to rebellion A fight against an image Of what I might become. Today I see that image In my own reflection And I am proud. I am wiser now. The relationship between mother and child is a complex one, shifting and changing as the years pass. Having written Life Story Books for many clients over the last few years, I’ve learned that mothers are also daughters, friends, sisters, wives, lovers, grandparents and great grandparents. They are adventurers, home makers, professionals and protectors. Their memories make them who they are and shape the lives of their own families. I’m very close to my mother. Over the years, the dynamic of our relationship has changed and our roles continue to evolve. The thread of love between parent and child expands and contracts with time and circumstance. Sometimes it stretches nearly to breaking point. However, if the thread is strong enough, the elasticity keeps the connection safe until it’s ready to tighten again. Childhood love is supremely selfish. A child sees his or her parents in one dimension and the unconditional love that mothers show their children can often only be understood when those children become parents

themselves. From an adult perspective parental love becomes three dimensional and can be seen from all angles. Parents become people too. Like most children, I went through phases of being irritated by my mother; teenage rebellion compelled me to argue and dismiss her suggestions and support. I thought I knew best. I was determined to enter womanhood Shops & Serviceson my own terms and without reference to the complexities of her life. I tested the strength of that elastic thread but I was puzzled. However hard I pushed away, the thread refused to snap. When I married, the thread grew shorter again and I was so proud to be able to share my happiness with her. I started to see things through her eyes and began to appreciate the new dimension in our relationship. Once I had children of my own, I needed my mother and pulled on the thread with as much force as I had pushed on it before. Together, we made and shared memories and became co-conspirators in the game of motherhood. In all this, my mother was wise enough to keep the thread at an acceptable length for both of us. Not too tight but tight enough. Now that my children are testing the strength of their own threads, I try to let the elastic stretch. It’s difficult but I can only trust that our relationship will be all the better for it. My mother has shown me the way. As the years go by, her thread grows ever closer and I now care for her as she cared for me as a child. I cherish her memories and her stories and our time is increasingly precious. I wish all those mothers out there a very happy Mothers’ Day. 32

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

CATHY BRETT: TALE OF TEENAGE PEN PALS The first lecture of 2020 was given by local resident, the author and illustrator Cathy Brett, who told a tale of teenage pen pals. One was her grandmother, Agnes Bentley of Dundee. Cathy inherited her photographic archive and diaries when she died in 2001. Fifteen years later she discovered seven tiny snaps showing A g n e s ’s teenage pen Agnes Mary Anne pal friendship with Mary Anne MacLeod from the Isle of Lewis who would later give birth to no other than US presidential candidate Donald Trump! Cathy posted the pictures on FaceBook. Journalist Torcuil Crichton was working in London as correspondent for Scottish newspapers. Cathy met him and in August 2016 his article about the pen pals appeared in the Daily Record. Back in 1926, Agnes, age 14, had won a painting competition and appeared in the Dundee Courier. She had received a letter from a Mary Ann MacLeod, also 14, of Tong, near Stornoway who suggested they become pen pals. They started exchanging photos. Mary Ann’s father was the village postmaster and most of Lewis consisted of crofts and poor fishing villages. In Dundee, Agnes lived with her parents in a poor tenement but was bright and secured a

high school scholarship. Mary Ann wrote, complaining of loneliness when all of her nine siblings emigrated. In early 1930 she wrote to Agnes saying she was also leaving to join her sister in New York. Age 17, the two girls met for the first time in Glasgow before Mary Ann sailed off to America. Agnes was then at St Andrews University. They continued to write and exchange photos and gifts even after Agnes won a scholarship to a German university. In 1933, she moved there but met Mary Ann in Glasgow a second time the following summer as both girls prepared to settle abroad. They spent the day shopping and Mary Ann bought a gift for her new boyfriend, Fred Trump. They parted and would not meet again for over 60 years as the letters stopped during World War 2. Agnes married a student in Germany, had two children and remained there until the war ended. She then returned to Britain, remarried and settled in London. Mary Ann meanwhile married Fred and gave birth to Donald. In 1995, Agnes spotted Mary Ann in a late night TV programme showing her living in Trump Tower, New York. She wrote to her old friend, got a swift reply and met Mary Ann at London’s Dorchester Hotel. Their third and last meeting. Neither lived to see Donald Trump become US President. ASHTEAD

Visit our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk for details of our lectures, visits, and tours.

In February The Arts Society Ashtead held its AGM, presided over by our new President, Barbara Lyner. Tributes were made to our retiring President, Joan Cooper, who was the founder Chairman in the early 80s, and has been our President for the past 15 years. This was followed by our monthly lecture entitled “Mad Men & Artists: How the Advertising Industry Exploited Fine Art”. It was intriguing to see how familiar works of art had been used, or abused, for commercial advertising. The first of our five visits this year to places of interest will be to our local stately home, West Horsley Place, on 22nd April. We are looking forward to our two cultural tours, in the Springtime to the Malvern area, and in the Autumn to Yorkshire. In 2020 we will continue to support our young generation by engaging local primary schools in exciting arts projects, namely the creation of themed ceramic objects (e.g. bees, fishes). We will be working with the 5th primary school, as well as a local Beavers group. We will also be conducting “Trails of Discovery” for local school children, based on St Giles’s Church. We hope you will be tempted to come along to one of our forthcoming lectures, where you will be warmly welcomed. There is a visitor’s fee of £5, but first-timers are welcome as free guests. We look forward to meeting you soon.

A BUSY TIME FOR

ASHTEAD ROTARY CLUB Following a most successful Christmas Party for senior citizens in December at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, Ashtead Rotarians and friends moved into action on the Saturdays before Christmas to carry out their annual street collections in Craddocks Parade, Barnett Wood Lane and The Street. A grand total of £1847.12 was collected and grateful thanks are extended to those who were so generous in donating. A donation of £1500 has been made to the Friends of Ashtead Youth Centre. The Centre has recently experienced a cut in the financial support it receives from Surrey County Council and substantially relies on donations to continue their excellent work with young people. Excitement is building as the Club begins preparations for its big event which is Ashtead Rotary Village Day which will take place this year on Saturday 13th June at the Queen Elizabeth Playing Fields in Barnett Wood Lane. The Club meets on Thursdays at the Cock Inn in Headley Village and visitors are welcome to most meetings. Contact Brian on 01372 275 860.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Thinking of Going Electric? What types of Electric Vehicles are available? Sales of electric vehicles are increasing. New registrations of plug-in vehicles have risen from 3,500 in 2013 to over 227,000 by August 2019. These figures include pure electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs). Choosing which type of EV is right for you varies from person to person, according to your lifestyles and preferences. Fortunately, there is an ever-increasing range of models, with manufacturers competing to produce both hybrid and pure EV models. Currently, the Mitsubishi’s Outlander is taking the lead as the most popular hybrid while the Nissan Leaf has been the UK’s best-selling plug-in electric car every year since 2013. The initial cost of purchase remains higher than equivalent petrol models. However, the government offers a grant for many new plug-in vehicles, depending on their cost, up to a maximum of £3,500. Why should I Go Green? Drivers are looking to replace petrol or diesel cars with electric vehicles for good reasons. As well as environmental benefits, research from King’s College, London and UK100, suggests that in London, bad pollution days led to 87 extra cardiac arrests and 251 people being admitted to hospital for asthma or strokes per year. Many EV owners will want the convenience of charging at home. The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) is currently offering a grant of £500 off the cost of purchasing and installing a home charging point. For journeys greater than the range of the car’s battery, drivers will need to make use of the public charging network. Rapid chargers enable a car to be charged in the time it takes to grab a coffee and check your phone messages! What are some of the pros and cons? In these early days, drivers need to be aware that current charging points are operated by different firms. Drivers may be put off by the range of accounts, apps and fuel cards required in order to make payment and it means that some planning is needed to avoid ‘range anxiety’. This sounds more complicated than it is and for regular journeys, you get to know the location of charging points and their payment method. To some extent, the higher purchase price of an EV is off-set by lower running costs. Car Magazine’s excellent comparison survey of several pure EVs with hybrids shows that the Renault Zoe costs 6.1p per mile with the Nissan Leaf at 4p per mile, about a fifth that of running a petrol car. Also, pure EVs are exempt from road tax and both servicing costs and insurance premiums are lower. New technologies come with new challenges. As yet the charging network is not ready for a sudden increase in demand. The batteries needed require lithium, an element which is already in short supply and one which involves a high level of environmental damage. To help our health and that of the planet, we need to keep finding new solutions as well as using old ones, such as walking and cycling!

W.I. MEETINGS

MOLE VALLEY W.I. JANUARY MEETING REPORT

It was a dark and very stormy night but our intrepid ladies made it to Fetcham Village Hall for the first meeting of 2020. The meeting was opened by our president Ann Layman. Everyone was wished a Happy New Year and birthday wishes went to those who had birthdays in January. Business was fairly brief but a series of upcoming events were read out and members were encouraged to sign up for them. A basket display of flowers was given to Liz White in appreciation of all her hard work on the committee. She was standing down due to ill health. After tea our speaker was introduced. Peter

Thompson, a retired barrister. He gave a very humorous talk about the jury system, interspersed with funny anecdotes, how women were eventually allowed to sit on a jury and how the upper age had been extended over the years. You could now sit on a jury up to your 76th birthday. Visitors are always welcome. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45pm. Details of all our outings/groups or programme details can be found on our website www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk

ASHTEAD W.I. FEBRUARY MEETING REPORT

There was a warm welcome for everyone on this cold evening, though with the sad news that one of our very long-term members, Betty Hudson, had recently died. Betty had been a very involved and enthusiastic member and will be much missed. Plans are in place for coming W.I. events and outings, along with news of proposed Walking Netball to take place with other local W.I.s This evening’s speaker was Jennifer Harkins from the Woodland Trust, on ‘Standing Up For Trees’, which it seems we really need to do! We learned that Native Woodlands have been on British Soil since the Ice Age, Ancient Woodlands are classed as undisturbed since 1600 and Naturalised Woodlands have been brought in by humans. We have lost so much wood over time, one example being

thousands of trees needed to build HMS Victory, and Britain is very much behind other countries of Europe in its woodland cover. The Woodland Trust was founded in 1972 and its aims are to Protect, Restore, Create, the latter being relevant to our local Langley Vale site and what is planned for it. Jennifer gave us a lot of information on this including a proposed orchard for local fruit trees. Volunteers are needed of course and many come from all over the country to help with planting. Our evening closed with info about our various sub-groups and monthly lunch, and our 4th March meeting will be at 7.30 in Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, when we will hear from Michelle Ernoult ‘Around the Beehive and Candle Making’. W.I. MEETINGS

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. JANUARY REPORT

The first meeting of 2020 was delayed by one week otherwise it would have taken place on new year’s day. There were several absentees indisposed and unwell so their newsletters were hand delivered to ensure continuity. Pat renewed memberships and distributed the yearly programmes, Sylvia read through the Resolutions, and votes were counted. Sheila concluded the angels story, and Heather promoted the January Pose panto, at the Old Barn Hall. Rosemary kindly introduced Susan last month and she has since joined, bringing her knowledge and enjoyment of W.I. from the Norfolk area. With Beetle Drive at the

ready we ended the first part of the evening, then followed a hectic three quarters of an hour. A prize was given to outright winner Janet; Betty taking a reward for least numbers but excellent effort. The remainder of the month includes W.I. marmalade making, and most importantly our January Christmas lunch on the 12th which will be created by Pat and Janice in the Rumble Room. We meet on the first Wednesday in the month (except August) at 7.30 pm. Fetcham Village Hall. Visitors are welcome. Further information from Maureen on 01372 842498. MAUREEN WEBB

Salut Spring!

It’s almost time to wave Winter goodbye and welcome the Spring! Hopefully weather conditions will make it a warm welcome, so why not head outside and give your garden a spring clean? Perk up your patio or driveway by power-cleaning them. Mulch borders, feed perennials and clear leaves and moss. Aerate your lawn, sweep in some sharp sand and add a good fertiliser to give it a boost. If your lawn is beyond reviving, it may be more time efficient and costeffective to replace it completely. You can update bare borders and reshape them at the same time. Complete your makeover with a new patio, or extend an existing one to create extra space for entertaining, dining and relaxing outside. Installing a BBQ or outdoor kitchen will help to get the most out of your garden and ensure you spend quality time outdoors. Don’t forget to refresh tables and chairs by giving them a good clean. You can take your furniture from shabby to chic in just one afternoon. Remove dirt and cobwebs from wooden or wrought iron furniture with a stiff brush, before cleaning thoroughly and restoring the finish to its former glory. Invest in some new cushions or accessories for an instantly stylish update. Hopefully 2020 will be a year of plenty. Plenty of good weather and plenty of good times in your garden!

Mother A mother loves right from the start, No matter if her children are near or far apart. A mother gives never-ending love. She gives us comfort and peace like a beautiful dove. For us she will always do her best, Even when we put her patience to the test. She wipes our tears, Chases away our fears, Encourages us to follow a dream, No matter how far fetched it may seem. Her gifts can never compare to any other. I am so honoured to call her my mother. Looking back on another year, I was so lucky to have a mother so dear. So Mom, on your special day, relax and enjoy And always know that I couldn’t have asked for any other More incredible person to call my mother. I love you, Mum! Happy Mother’s Day

HOME & GARDEN

The 5 Natural Elements By Selina Botham Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham thinks about the 5 Natural elements water, earth, fire and wind and how they relate to gardens. This month taking a look at ‘earth’ and its importance in garden design. All gardeners will know that the earth (soil) you have has a huge impact on how your garden will look and how well plants grow. Soil is precious and fundamental for life. In the times when everyone had to grow their own food, I am sure it was more highly valued. As we become more eco aware and planet responsible I am sure we will start to treat it with more care. It is certainly something to check if you are buying a new build house. Soil is made up from weathered rock and mineral particles like clay, sand and silt and organic matter which is decomposing animal and plant matter, plus microorganisms. It’s a complicated ecosystem in its own right and soil takes years to form and develop. If you have good soil either in your own garden or at an allotment it will be because you or previous owners have tended and improved the soil over the years. This will reward you with plants which grow well and fruit and veg which taste amazing. Topsoil is the top layer and will be between 150-300 mm thick. This is the layer with the organic matter and all the organisms. Below that, the sub soil is inorganic and a lighter colour. The sub soil may be sandy and free draining or in the case of clay it is water retentive. Clay soil, if mistreated, can become compacted even from being walked on when wet. After a building project often large areas of a garden have been damaged by the works and need careful rectification as part of the

72

new garden creation. If the soil structure has been destroyed it will take a lot of work to repair it. Because soil is a living ecosystem, worms and microorganisms also need time to grow and do their work. When you understand the soil layers, it’s a relief to realise that as long as the sub soil is well structured and can drain and is inorganic, it’s only the top 300mm that you need to worry about and there is a lot that can be done to improve topsoil using the no dig method. Or I have had good results with digging in grit, gravel, sand and compost to help ‘lighten’ heavy topsoil. If that is not feasible or if you need more soil then you can buy in topsoil (only use a reputable supplier and purchase soil which is tested to British standards). The type of soil you have can be analysed and categorised and it will be suitable for a certain range of plants. It’s often good to look at your neighbours gardens to see what plants are thriving. There are plenty of places to go for extra help like the RHS, Gardening - Which and many of the garden centres do have leaflets with plant suggestions according to soil type. If you employ a garden designer they will examine and test your soil and choose plants that will be suited to your soil as well as the sun/shade conditions in each bed. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk and her facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

Purse Theft NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

The theft of bags and purses and mobiles from unsuspecting people whilst shopping is an ongoing issue, which also affects residents of Mole Valley from time to time. The general presumption is that elderly ladies are the main targets for this type of crime. If this is your view you would be wrong everyone is a potential target. As a resident of Mole Valley myself, I regularly do my shopping in local stores and shops and, wearing my Crime Reduction Advisor’s hat, have researched the risks that I have seen on a fairly regular basis. The following are just some of my observations, built up over the past month when I have been out shopping with my wife and seen for myself how easy it is for the would-be thief to get some easy pickings. A gentleman walking down the aisle in a supermarket with his wallet protruding from the back pocket of his trousers is an “easy picking” - even for a bad thief. Even better for a thief, if the gentleman also keeps his mobile in a back pocket!! Two mums engrossed in conversation, their babies playing happily. Both of the mums I saw had their bags perched on top of their trolleys - open and with purses on full view. Yet another easy target. If they must leave their bags in the shopping trolley, I just wish that they were zipped up or closed properly - perhaps with the chain from the trolley wrapped around the strap several times as this would make is very difficult to steal without being noticed. Then I see an elderly lady struggling to reach a box of washing powder on the top shelf, but can’t see her bag. Where is it? I offer my help and get the washing powder down for her from the shelf. I then see that

82

Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2020

she has her bag over her shoulder and close to her body with the clasp facing inwards. This is great to see as it would prove much too difficult for a thief to bother trying to steal, particularly when there are easier targets around. This got me imagining a scenario that could have occurred. One of the mums with her baby goes through the checkout with her shopping and finds that her bag has been stolen. Her purse was in the bag so she has no means to pay. She then goes to the car park to find that her car has been stolen, because the keys were in her bag. She’s carrying her baby, because the baby’s pushchair was in the car. She can’t call her friend to pick her up, because her mobile phone was in her bag and so was her address book. When she finally gets home, she can’t get in. Yes, you guessed it - her door keys were in her bag. I know that seems a bit extreme but it could be a possible outcome if a bag is stolen. Add to this the inconvenience of stopping bank cards, contacting insurance companies and changing door locks and you can then see the importance of looking after your personal belongings when out and about. I hope that this gives some of you food for thought? Email: Neil.Clarke@surrey.pnn.police.uk Telephone: 01483 630809 Call 101 for all non-emergency policing matters. Call 999 if you have a genuine emergency requiring the attendance of the police (e.g. a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger). WALKING BUDDY WANTED My partner Lin has a rare, progressive, dementia condition (Posterior Cortical Atrophy). One of its effects is that she is now “visually impaired”. She lives for walking, but can only achieve this now by being accompanied.

WE ARE LOOKING TO EMPLOY SOMEONE, PREFERABLY MONDAY TO FRIDAY, WITH ADVANCED EMPATHY TO PERFORM THIS TASK. IDEALLY IT WOULD BE FOR 3 OR 4 HOURS EACH DAY, MORNING OR AFTERNOON.
