As we step slowly towards summer and slowly out of lockdown, it seems there is a feeling of optimism in the air. The longer days and hopefully brighter weather certainly lift the spirits, as well as being able to see our family and friends outside again, after months apart for many. It is all positive and very welcomed! The benefits of the vaccine are filtering through now, so here’s hoping we are moving ever closer to a more normal situation again. Picnics and country walks are popular pastimes so let’s hope for a summer like last year, to provide maximum opportunities for enjoying these simple pleasures. At the time of writing, the non-essential shops are on the verge of opening again; what a truly difficult time it has been for so many businesses. Please do support our local shops and services as they start on the road to recovery, and what a joy it will be to shop local again for non-essential items as well as the essentials of course! Locally there is certainly an increase in activity and finally after months without any local events, we are able to include some ‘What’s on’ pages in this issue! Not quite at the level they used to be just yet, but at least it’s a start! We hope to build on these pages as the lockdown limitations continue to decrease over the coming months. There are a number of local productions to consider as well as a few open days which may be of interest. Please do also take a look at the feature we have on page 24 about the changes which lie ahead for Ashtead Youth Club. This much loved local club has provided a safe place for young people to meet and develop friendships for so many years, I even went there myself, back in the day! Maybe you can help as it heads into this new chapter and hopefully continues to offer much needed support to the younger members of the community post pandemic? So all in all, a promising month ahead which also includes a couple of Look Local Birthdays, for Michelle our Assistant Editor and Kirsty our super duper designer! I am buying a property do I also need to make a Will? Whether you are buying a property alone or with another person, purchasing your first or your fifteenth home, planning on living in it or letting it out: whenever you acquire property, you should consider whether you need to make or update your Will as a result. Fundamentally, your Will determines who receives your estate when you die. This includes any property you own solely or as tenants in common with someone else. For many people, their property is their most valuable asset and it is all the more important to ensure it passes as intended on death. If you die without a Will, the future of this asset becomes uncertain and the intestacy rules will dictate which of your closest relatives receives your estate. This could mean that some of your loved ones are left without. My situation is simple - do I need a Will? If you own property, it is always worth considering putting a Will in place. Making a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property, money and other possessions after you die, as well as providing an effective means of planning for inheritance tax (IHT).

The inheritance tax rules for people who own property and who wish to pass it to their descendants have recently changed. Yes, you should review your existing Will to make sure it is still appropriate and reflects your wishes. You may find that in your current Will, you made a gift of a property you no longer own, or that the Will was drafted when your estate was lower or higher in value and needs to be updated to reflect the change in circumstances. You may also find that in your current Will, your estate could inadvertently pay more inheritance tax than is necessary, because it was drafted before the changes were made to tax rules, regarding gifts of property. cherry & vanilla custard tart ingredients Plain flour, for dusting 215g frozen Cooks’ Ingredients Pastry sheet, defrosted 4 British Blacktail Free Range Egg yolks 75g caster sugar 250ml double cream 1½ tsp Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Extract 400g can essential Waitrose Black Cherries in Light Syrup, drained Fresh nutmeg, to grate over

method 1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Unroll the pastry sheet and put it on a lightly floured surface. Roll so that it becomes slightly thinner, until it’s large enough to fit a 20cm fluted tart case (ideally about 3cm deep). 2. Carefully lay the pastry in the tin, prick the base, then line with baking parchment and baking beans. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove the parchment and beans* and bake for another 5 minutes; set aside to cool for 5 minutes. 3. Lower the oven to 170˚C, gas mark 3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar, then whisk in the cream and vanilla extract. Scatter the cherries into the tart case and pour over the cream mixture. Grate over a little nutmeg and bake for 45 minutes-1 hour until set with a slight wobble in the centre. Cool to room temperature (or chill overnight) before serving. *(Do not eat beans that have been used for blind baking)

A COMMUNITY CHAMPION Very sadly the FRA lost one of its own last month. Linda Tippelt was a true community champion not just for us in Fetcham, but for many others whose lives she touched much further afield. When the River Mole flooded dozens of Fetcham homes at Christmas in 2013, it was Linda who realised that when the immediate crisis was over, some serious campaigning would be needed. So it was she who set up the Leatherhead and Fetcham Flood Action Group to make sure that flood protection was given the attention it deserved. We were delighted when she agreed to join the FRA committee. She had an unerring ability to identify uncomfortable truths, or to put the difficult question. Among many other roles, she was at various times an Olympic Gamesmaker, a school governor and a great contributor to the life of St Mary’s Church. She died on Easter Monday at the Princess Alice Hospice, Esher. Her spirit for community volunteering will be missed not just by the FRA, but by many others too.
NORBURY PARK SAWMILL - At the time of writing the sawmill gates will be closing and we have little idea of what will be coming next, and when. It’s a familiar landmark to many of us, and we warm to the crafted oak products it produces. However, Surrey Wildlife Trust, which owns the business, has decided that it no longer fits with its core conservation activities. That may indeed be so. But what concerns the FRA is the less than transparent way in which the SWT came to its decision, and how it was agreed with Surrey County Council to close the business with just six weeks notice. This was a conversation that we, and many others, were not asked to join. But maybe we should have been, as a petition opposing closure attracted a huge response, more than 4,000 signatures. It could be that many of you are feeling that you would like more of a say in decisions such as this. ASHTEAD YOUTH CENTRE Opening for Business
We have all been affected by the impact of the pandemic. Our community has pulled together through multiple lockdowns to help protect the physical health of our friends, families and neighbours. This unified act of selflessness has come at a cost; economically, socially and mentally and could be felt for many years to come, by our younger generation. In April 2021, following reductions in local authority funding, Surrey County Council are transitioning the management of the Ashtead Youth Club building, staffing and delivery of Youth Work to the Friends of Ashtead charity. We are looking for local organisations to come on board with us as our “Foundation Partners”, playing an instrumental role in relaunching a much needed service to support our local young people as they recover from the pandemic and develop those skills and aspirations that will be the cornerstones for the success of their futures. The Friends Charity will be launching the ‘Ashtead Young People’s Hub’. They will be re-introducing drop-in youth work (within covid safe practice guidelines) and welcoming back a number of groups who support a wide variety of people across our community. We also expect to welcome a new group 24 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2021
who will be supporting young people with disabilities and their families. The Youth Work Service will continue to take an inclusive approach where every young person is welcome and can benefit from what we hope to offer. We will continue to focus energy and resources on those young people who need a little extra support to find their way and achieve their full potential, and we will try to support their families on this journey with them. Our initial focus over the next couple of years will be supporting young people to recover emotionally and developmentally from the impact of Covid. We will look to encourage and nurture their ability to develop their employability skills as they enter an increasingly fragile economic market as young adults. As a beneficiary of these services when I was a teenager, I know how valuable it is. Since becoming a father, it breaks my heart to think that our kids may not get access to the same opportunities. Once the pandemic is under control, they will need safe spaces to re-establish their friendships, catch up on lost time and have access to a listening ear and professional advice, if they need to. THE STORY OF THE GRANGE The Grange Centre in Bookham provides homes, skills, social opportunities and care for some 130 adults with learning disabilities. The site in Rectory Lane pre-dates 1600 and was the subject of a fascinating online lecture by local historian Vivien White to the Leatherhead & District Local History in March. She showed how the original building Grange house 1910 was a yeoman’s house, was then used as cottages for farm labourers, was transformed into a gentleman’s residence in the 19th century, and was sold to the School of Stitchery and Lace, forerunner of the present charity, in the 20th. The 500 years of its history are filled with human interest stories and Vivien hopes to complete a book on The Grange later this year, if archives open to allow her to complete the research. In the meantime, Eloise Appleby, today’s chief executive officer of The Grange, is currently training hard for a sponsored 95Eloise training with The Grange Scottish Walking Team 2019 mile walk in Scotland in late June to raise funds for the charity. It was hit hard by the Covid-19 restrictions and she will be walking the West Highland Way. Vivien’s 45-minute talk explained why The Grange has always technically been in Great Bookham although situated right on the boundary with the neighbouring parish of Little Bookham. She used historical maps to show that while jutting into Little Bookham, it was probably built on that spot to be close to the strips of 34 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2021
land in common fields overlooked by and belonging to the original owner. One early owner was Henry Collins, a rector of Little Bookham church half a mile away. He was the son of a mercer from Kingston-upon-Thames and probably the first rector of the church with a university degree, bought with a legacy from his father. He died in an epidemic leaving a wife and young family. After the children grew up, the property was sold to a local yeoman.

It was occupied by farm labourers until the late 18th century when a rich London gentleman, Henry Seawell, who was already renting a house nearby, bought it together with the land. His great-grandson developed the building into a substantial residence and gave it the name The Grange. This he sold to a wealthy London solicitor, Arthur Bird, at the end of the 19th century and Bird extended the house. He also bought other property in Bookham and even had the route of Rectory Lane moved in order to give The Grange a lawn in front of it and a grand entrance. The School of Stitchery and Lace, established to give employment to nurses injured in the First World War, moved there in 1938. The name changed in the 1970s and it became a registered care home in the 1980s, encouraging disabled adults to live more independent and fulfilling lives. Spring is a time where we see many injuries and re-occurrences of old injuries in our clinic due to that sudden urge to get out in the garden, to play that first round of golf or start a new exercise regime (this will be especially pertinent this year as lockdown gradually lifts)
So when the Spring time comes; 1. Be mindful about yourself and your posture. 2. Change your activity often (weed for 15 minutes, mow the lawn for 15 mins, dig for 15 mins) and then rest for 15 minutes. Gather your thoughts, gather your aches and pains and re-assess. 3. Bookham Wine Club A virtual journey through the Rhone Valley with wine expert Heather Dougherty
Zoom played its part again in April when club members joined Heather Dougherty on a virtual tour of the delightful Rhone Valley and its vineyards. Heather, a leading wine expert, journalist and educator is always happiest exploring the classic wines of France, and as one of only three Certified Rhone Educators in the UK, she was the perfect host to lead us. Our journey was rich in detail, as Heather described the Valley’s demanding terrain, and how the vineyards (probably the oldest in France) produce a range of grape varieties that are planted and carefully managed across the Northern and Southern areas of the Rhone Valley. The diversity of the wine-growing areas, due to the complex soils and variations of the Mediterranean climate, give the Rhone Valley wines their unique character. Mostly reds, the wines of the Rhone are
divided into three colours. In the north, robust but fine reds and aromatic whites. In the south, more fullbodied reds, expressive whites and round and fruity rosés. Sweet wines complete this large range. Before our meeting, members were provided with a ‘shopping list’ of wines to purchase and taste during the presentation - and this worked well for members with an extensive range of wines at prices to suit all pockets! WEDNESDAY 12 MAY 2021 AT 7.30PM May 2021 commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte. We are delighted to be marking this occasion with a talk on Zoom by Carole Petipher entitled:
‘The Collections of Napoleon and Josephine at the Chateau de Malmaison’ What was it that made Napoleon and Josephine one of the most followed couples in history? These questions can be answered giving a true insight into their characters by exploring the collections at the Chateau de Malmaison. The Estate, which was bought by the couple as their private retreat, away from the Pomp and Ceremony of the Official Residences, was made into a National Museum in 1905 amassing a huge collection of their possessions. Paintings, personal objects, complete room layouts, and some magnificent pieces of porcelain are just some of the things on display. So far so good with the “Roadmap to Normality”. We are a thriving society with a membership of 280, providing stimulating artsrelated talks, visits to places of interest, cultural tours and special events. Normally our talks have taken place on the 3rd Tuesday morning of each month at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, and we are looking forward to the time when that can be resumed. Throughout the three lockdowns we have been keeping in touch with our members through regular newsletters, by email or handdelivery for those without that facility. Since last July, using the Zoom app, we have been screening monthly online talks, as well as providing access to some “virtual tours” of places of interest. These were enjoyed by many of our members on-screen in the comfort of their own homes. On the 18th May we will be holding our Annual General Meeting online via Zoom, to be followed by our talk entitled
“Passionate Potters: from de Morgan to Leach”. Because of the AGM, this meeting will regrettably not be open to visitors.

Eastwick Park Ornamental Dairy
Built in 1806, the dairy stood close to Eastwick Park manor house in Great Bookham (demolished 1958). The larger building is the dairy where cream and butter were produced, whilst the smaller one is the scalding house, which provided the heat needed as part of the cheese-making process. The buildings were situated in a dell in order to gather heavier, colder air around the dairy. Turville Kille (18981997) described how as a boy before the First World War he would ‘go down steps into the dairy where on a hot summer`s day the difference of temperature was unbelievable. The right hand side of the room was tiled with blue and white tiles and there was also a solid angular slab on which stood bowls of cream, jugs of milk and joints of meat for the Manor House’. After the First World War and the breaking up of the estate, dairy farming ceased and the dairy became redundant. By 1976 it was dilapidated and placed on the English Heritage list of buildings at risk, then Listed Grade II in 1990. Readers may recall seeing the decaying dairy in the garden of a bungalow near the junction of Eastwick Road with Lower Road, Great Bookham. Further deterioration occurred until the Leatherhead & District Countryside Protection 44 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2021
Society appointed conservation architects to develop a scheme for restoring the buildings. It was agreed in 2011 that the owners of the property within whose garden the dairy had survived would donate it to the Weald and Downland Living Museum. The Society then made a significant grant towards the cost of its dismantling and transport to the Museum, where it has now been skilfully conserved and rebuilt as it would have been when new. Founded in 1929, the Leatherhead & District Countryside Protection Society exists to, among many other things, champion ‘meritorious buildings’. It has been very pleased therefore to learn that the Surrey Industrial History Group has awarded the Weald and Downland Living Museum its 2021 Conservation Award for the expert restoration of the dairy. leatherhead & District Could Leatherhead U3A Be For You? There have been many troubling events to digest over the past year, but some good has also emerged from Covid’s dark shadow. A particular bright spot has been embracing the digital technology available to keep our clubs and societies operating. Leatherhead U3A has been no exception. We’ve been using Zoom for many months to keep our regular monthly meetings going. We’ve had some fascinating speakers recently telling us about Gilbert & Sullivan, Victorian Leisure and revisiting a 1960s Greyhound Bus Tour of the USA. We’ve also introduced Zoom Coffee Mornings and Afternoon Teas to give our members more opportunities to meet up and have a chat with
friends. Of course, the U3A isn’t just about social gatherings. We have over 30 special interest groups ranging from Antiques and Collectables to Bridge, Local history, International Relations, Table Tennis, Craft and many more. We have over 250 members but we are always pleased to welcome new ones. Our May monthly talk is by Adrian Joy and is on the setting up and running of a Turkey Farm in Horsley. March heralded a lighter note, a comedy quiz hosted by TV sketch writer Bob Sinfield on the life and times of Bob Monkhouse. April was nostalgia month with a look at the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and this month we’ll hear about the work of Customs Officers. In June our subject is Impressionist Paintings. LOCAL RSPB GROUP Dorking and District
The local RSPB group for Bookham, is a friendly group that provides members with a range of bird watching walks and relevant talks. We are all looking forward to the restrictions being lifted, but we have continued through the lockdown with a series of really interesting talks via Zoom and occasional 1 to 1 socially distanced walks. Over the last few months we have got together for occasional “coffee mornings” on Zoom and had talks on Ospreys in Cumbria; a French nature reserve in La Brenne; an introduction to bird watching session and a talk about visits to Estonia and Madagascar; all supported with some 48 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2021

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead The Power of Money When you think about climate change and environmental damage, does money come into your mind? Maybe the cost of mitigating the impacts, clearing up the flooding from extreme weather events or major environmental damages. Maybe the cost of people researching climate change or working to put in place strategies to mitigate its impact. Maybe you’ve never thought that your money and choices of what to do with that money could have an impact on the future of our planet. Sustainable consumer - if you are on the hunt to buy something, cost is always a criteria when comparing products. Why not add Sustainability to your criteria list and really understand how the selling party is managing their environmental and climate change impacts? As a consumer, you have the power to demand sustainable products and practises from your supplier. Look for products with labels from reliable organisations that evaluate the impact of each item. A few examples include FSC, CarbonNeutral®, Waterwise, GOTS, Rainforest Alliance Certified, and Fairtrade. Ask yourself three questions - Can I make do without it? Can I make it myself? Can I buy second hand? If not, then think about 7 key sustainable criteria when making your selection - Materials, Energy Content, Delivery, Efficiency, Durability, Disposal and Packaging. To find a sustainable product each of these areas, across the lifecycle of the product need to have as small an impact as possible. Sustainable investor - Do you know the investment portfolio for your bank or how your pension provider is investing your money? Are they managing their climate related risks? If you are not sure, ask the following questions of any organisation managing your money: 1. What are its investment criteria and does it invest in unethical sectors? This will illustrate where they will
or will not invest your money (e.g. no to tobacco, yes to healthcare) Explore the sectors within which the organisation will invest to ensure it excludes any you would not be comfortable with. 2. Is it fossil fuel free? Moving your money away from fossil fuel investment can greatly reduce your carbon impact. 3. Is there transparency?
