I hope you enjoyed a relaxing Easter break? Mine was filled with family meals, a spot of gardening and some lovely long walks with the dog, oh and a little bit of chocolate too! Just about perfect I’d say! As is often the case, there is so much going on locally this month I simply can’t fit everything into my little message, but here are a few high-lights to whet your appetites, with plenty more to discover as you turn our pages... Amanda Fashion from Ashtead High Street, recently held their Spring/Summer Charity Fashion Show, it was a great event, hear all about it on page 6. I enjoyed an over-night stay at the spectacular Beaverbrook Hotel a few weeks ago. This is a stunning local venue, with quite an amazing past! It was an awesome treat and I hope you enjoy reading about my visit. It’s Competition time again folks! This month, you could win a pair of tickets to visit The Hampton Court Flower show! Good Luck to all who enter. This is a lovely day out so don’t miss out. News also of the much anticipated Leatherhead Drama Festival which promises to have a packed schedule this year. You simply can’t miss their eye catching details on page 16! Leatherhead Museum Free Family Craft Afternoons are back this month, these are very popular so if you’d like to attend, please do book your spaces early to avoid disappointment, see page 48 for more info. An important date for your diaries for next month is Saturday 8th June, when the 36th annual Ashtead Rotary Village Day takes place! This is such a popular local event and you can save a few £’s by purchasing your tickets in advance. See inside for details. Finally, we are delighted to announce that, having been nominated, we have recently won the Corporate Live Wire, National Award for Innovation & Excellence! Wow! How wonderful! I think this means we are innovative in an excellent sort of way! Whatever it means, we are delighted to take that!

Wishing you all a fabulous May,

AMANDA 2019 SPRING/SUMMER FASHION SHOW

At the end of March, Look Local went along to Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall where Amanda Fashions of Ashtead was holding their biannual Fashion Show. This is a hot ticket event and always a sell out. Twice a year Amanda holds a fashion show to launch the coming seasons clothing ranges and raise money for charity. We had a fabulous evening, enjoying the chance to preview the Spring and Summer seasons clothing ranges that will be available from Amanda’s in Ashtead High Street. There was a welcome drink, interval canapes, a raffle and a chance to catch up with friends, old and new and we were entertained throughout the evening by a wonderful pianist named Basil. The evening was opened by Jill Jackson, President and Founder of the evening’s charity, Dyscover. Dycover is a local charity, based in Dorincourt on Oaklawn Road in Leatherhead and celebrated it’s 25th Anniversary in April. The charity provides long-term support and opportunities for people with aphasia and their families. Aphasia is a communication disability that is caused by damage to the language processing centres of the brain,

6 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

most commonly through stroke. It can affect the ability to speak, read, write and understand what’s being said and is a very frustrating and isolating condition. Aphasia can be mild or severe, depending on the type and extent of damage to the brain. Dyscover operates its vital services throughout Surrey and South London. Daily sessions are led by professional speech and language therapists and are designed to help people to adjust to living with aphasia. Members are helped to develop strategies for communicating, maximise abilities and provide help and support for partners, carers and other family members. For more information about Dyscover go to www. dyscover.org.uk Amanda and her team including friends and family acting as hosts, models, backroom support, etc managed to raise £3000 with the event. So well done to all involved. It really is a great evening out. If you haven’t been before, look out for the September date for a chance to preview the Autumn Winter collections. To view all the outfits from the show please go to www.amandafashions.co.uk

SURREY FIRE AND RESCUE Surrey County Council is consulting on a proposed £3 million of cuts to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, in particular by closing a number of fire stations at night. While Leatherhead Fire Station is not subject to a night closure, Fetcham residents may wish to consider the potential impact of night closures in Cobham (Painshill) and Banstead, and at Guildford which will lose its second appliance at night. It follows that our own single fire engine will have to provide increased out of area cover, and could result in us having to wait longer for a second appliance if one was required. The council report says current night cover is more than needed, and it wants to spend more money instead on prevention work and community safety. While we appreciate that Surrey County Council is required to make budget cuts we think Fetcham residents should look carefully at these proposals. Consultation closes on 26th May, here is the link: h t t p s : / / w w w. s u r re yc c . g ov. u k / p e o p l e - a n d e

OAKFIELD OUTDOOR LEARNING On 4th April Oakfield Junior School officially opened its Outdoor Learning Area along with staff, friends of the school, parents, pupils and the FRA. The outdoor area consists of wooden shelters, a willow hut, a water and sand learning station and plantings. The plantings were carried out by the students incorporating learning experiences such as measuring growth on a chart, seeing how vegetables grow plus many other aspects of gardening. The students have planted various fruits & vegetables and have even made jams & chutneys. All the staff at Oakfield worked hard on this project, also involving the students in the planning process. The school now hopes to add a green house, and potting shed. Anybody who would like to help with these projects please contact Oakfield at: parent@oakfield.surrey.sch.uk

Japanese knotweed

The Government has issued guidance on invasive plants such as Japanese knotweed, and it states that not only have you got to prevent invasive non-native plants spreading on your land, you also must prevent harmful weeds on your land spreading onto a neighbour’s property.

What is it?

Japanese knotweed is an invasive, non-native plant that can cause physical damage to buildings and land, which in turn affects the value of the property, and can be expensive and difficult to eradicate or treat. You can be fined up to £5,000 or sent to prison for up to 2 years if you allow contaminated soil or plant material from any waste you transfer to spread into the wild. The most commonly found invasive non-native species are:

• Japanese knotweed • Giant hogweed • Himalayan balsam • Rhododendron ponticum • New Zealand pigmyweed. Why is it a big deal? When you are buying a property, you will receive a Property Information Form filled in by the seller. There is a standard protocol question on whether the property has been affected by Japanese knotweed and if so, whether there is a management plan in place. The form does not ask about other invasive plants. However, if the seller states there is not Japanese knotweed and there is, this may not necessarily be relied upon. Building insurance may not cover for Japanese knotweed if it is found. Policies usually state the owner has to do everything they can to prevent

damage to a home, and ignoring the presence of a plant may mean that any claim is denied. Some mortgage lenders have made changes to their requirements for Japanese knotweed. For example, Coventry Building Society need to be informed if there is Japanese knotweed present within the boundaries of the property and is within 7 metres from a habitable space or that it is causing damage to outbuildings, structures, drains, paths, boundaries walls, or fences. The recent case of Williams v Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd [2018] EWCA Civ 1514 shows that the Court of Appeal accept that Japanese knotweed is a serious issue and this could raise further claims. In this case, the claimants were owners of two semidetached bungalows in Wales that backed onto a railway embankment which had been infested by Japanese knotweed. The claimants brought a claim of private nuisance against Network Rail. The Court of Appeal decided that Japanese knotweed can be an actionable nuisance. If you are concerned about Japanese knotweed on the property you are purchasing or a neighbouring property, then do talk to your solicitor. There are a range of options available, including indemnity insurance, or having a specialist knotweed survey and assessment. If any work has been done to Japanese knotweed to eradicate it, it is worth considering using a specialist company that will provide a guarantee. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Community Funding & Grants available from MVDC For your Community Organisation The Scouts have received a grant from the Thomas Flack Trust Fund towards building more storage for equipment needed for their activities. Do you have to have the Scouts high profile reputation for benefiting the young people of our community to get a grant? The answer is: No. You don’t need the high profile. If your organisation does things that are good for the community, it is already on the first and most important rung of the ladder. Where does the money come from? Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has designated funds within its budget, even in these straitened times, and is the administrator for other funds. Funds come under several headings: • Capital Fund • Small-grants Community Fund • Thomas Flack Trust Fund • Annual Revenue Grant If your organisation delivers valuable services to Mole Valley residents, you need to consider if it is consistent with MVDC priorities as outlined in the Corporate Strategy. If that sounds like the quagmire of bureaucracy read on. Where do you find the MVDC Corporate Strategy? As is usual these days the answer is “On the website” www. molevalley.gov.uk. If you think your organisation meets the Corporate Strategy, you might like to check out your chances with the responsible officer at MVDC (01306 879 338 or grants@molevalley.gov.uk) or go straight to form filling. You can complete an Expression of Interest form online and MVDC will be in touch within 5 days. Funding requests must: • Show how they deliver improvements in at least one of the MVDC Strategy priority areas. • Show that they have community support. • Work collaboratively with other agencies, organisations and individuals. • Raise funding from as many sources as possible. • Demonstrate that a grant will help to attract or unlock

funding from other sources. Remember the MVDC officers are there to help, as are our local Councillors Who has received grants in the past? The Scouts, as mentioned above. Community Capital has helped Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall and The Dell. The establishment of a choir, disabled charities and support for mental health groups are all examples of those who have benefited. Most funds have a decision making calendar, so check for submission deadlines and dates of grant-awarding committee meetings. For Community-wide Infrastructure Another source of funding is the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) that is charged on new developments. All local towns and villages receive a percentage of the CIL paid in their locality; for most it will be 15% but, because Ashtead has a Neighbourhood Development Plan in place, our allocation is 25%. The wider CIL pot is split between MVDC and Surrey County Council to spend on infrastructure across the District and County as is deemed necessary or required. CIL funds allocated to Ashtead are available to our community to use to address issues arising from the demands that development places on our local facilities and infrastructure: that could mean improvement, maintenance or new provision. MVDC will consider all applications for CIL funding in consultation with our local Councillors: evidence of wide community support for an application would also be key. All information about the Neighbourhood CIL and how to apply for it can be found under the Benefits and Grants section of MVDC’s website but if you have an idea for a project, the best place to start is by contacting Rod Shaw at MVDC who can tell you what, if any, CIL funds are available: email him at rod.shaw@ molevalley.gov.uk or telephone him on 01306-885001. The scope is wide. The money is there so go for it Ashtead! Peter Stanyard - Committee Member Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

BEAVERBROOK Hotel and Spa

Once the home of press baron & politician Max Aitken, aka Lord Beaverbrook, this beautiful hotel sits in the foothills of Box Hill, between Leatherhead and Dorking. Set in 400 acres of Surrey countryside, it’s the perfect setting for this local gem. The recently refurbished country house still has a wonderful feel of belonging to someone special. Not surprising as it boasts an impressive history, which also includes many awe-inspiring guests, from times gone by. As you pass from one reception room to another, you will spot a selection of fascinating wall art including a framed poem, written especially for Lord Beaverbrook, by non-other than Rudyard Kipling himself! The glassdomed lobby is home to a Grand Piano and a stunning Gerhard Ritcher tapestry which hangs on the wall. Photographs from WW1 & WW2, depicting scenes from when Lord Beaverbrook was a cabinet minister, also make for interesting viewing.

The grand historic family home has been so tastefully transformed and so beautifully designed by Susie Atkinson. It’s very in keeping with the era, yet weirdly up to date as well: How did she do that? Open fires & comfy sofas with views over the gardens and beyond to the beautiful North Downs. The library houses leather bound books galore, with walls of original wooden paneling. The first UK home cinema is still in place where many war-time planning meetings were held, this is now available for hotel guests to watch a selection of films from the comfort of deep red sofas. You really can imagine Sir Winston Churchill standing by a window watching the night sky for German planes en route to London. He apparently spent much of the war here with his friend and fellow cabinet minister Lord Beaverbrook. Other celebrity guests included Charlie Chaplin, HG Wells, W. Somerset Maugham, Ian Fleming, Wallis Simpson, Elizabeth Taylor, Joe & Rose Kennedy and Dame Rebecca West. We were

certainly in good company then! On our arrival, we were given a warm welcome, our car was parked for us and our cases discreetly delivered to the Dame Rebecca West Room! A stunning and large room with a roll top bath in one corner. The hotel offers 18 rooms, which are individually styled and named after the former prestigious guests as mentioned above. One of these being ‘The Dowager Suit’, formerly Lady Beaverbrook’s room, it has many antiques and even a Louise Bourgeoise artwork. The large roll top bath is perfectly positioned by a window for views over the countryside, out towards Dorking. This is no ordinary hotel. All the bedrooms have luxurious bathrooms, Apple TV, a Coffee Machine, a mini fridge, stocked with complimentary soft drinks and a few tempting snacks, and a bottle of Sipsmith Sloe Gin too! The Garden House and Garden Cottage offer a further 11 rooms; these are Victorian in style and there is also a cookery school in this building! And 6 more rooms are due to open in early 2020, located in the Coach House. At about 7.30 pm we started our evening at ‘The Parrot Bar’ a stunning room with an amazingly well stocked art deco bar; we both enjoyed a ‘Spitfire Collins’ a

14 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

mix of Vodka, peach and elderflower with ginger and lemongrass undertones! This was served with shelled pistachio nuts & olives. A delicious spring aperitif. The hotel’s main restaurant is not quite what you might expect; it is in fact, a Japanese Grill. Under the watchful eye of Ex Nobu head chef Maruyama Taiji the menu is authentic with a modern twist. We started our meal with a Garden Salad which would pass as a work of art in itself, to accompany this, Lobster Tempura with Wasabi Mayo and Jalapino Shiso Dressing. Totally amazing is all I can say. Next up, a shared plate of Chef Selection, melt in the mouth, Sashimi, beautifully tender and perfectly light. For our main courses I chose Corn Fed Chicken with Teriyaki sauce & sliced truffle and my guest opted for Koji Monkfish, with Yozu Soy, sautéed mushrooms, and porcini powder. To accompany these, Broccoli with Kimchi Mayo and steamed rice. A feast we will not forget in a very long time. Each dish was perfectly prepared and the fusion of flavours sent our taste buds into over drive. We enjoyed a bottle of chilled Chablis with our meal, which went beautifully with the Oriental cuisine. There is an amazing wine selection to choose from, which would please even the most demanding connoisseur I’m sure.

To finish our meal a ‘Tasting Plate to Share’ which included small portions of Hibiscus Chocolate Fondant with Raspberry Sorbet, Matcha Tiramisu, Lemon Curd Scorched Meringue, and a Caramelised Banana Cake with Coffee and Dulce de Leche Ice Cream. If you like good food, you have my word, you will not be disappointed. This was an exceptionally good meal. We slept very soundly in our four poster bed with it’s super soft white sheets. However, our treat was not over yet! We woke the next morning looking forward to the Hotel Spa experience… The Spa is in a separate building just next to the Hotel; The Coach House, so named because it used to be just that… Striking glass design by Brian Clarke runs through the whole building, it’s bold for sure, but works very well. The Spa has a selection of sumptuous treatment rooms, a large steam/ice room and relaxation area, a Boutique and Apothecary, a delightful Deli Restaurant where food is served between mid-day and 5pm, a stunning indoor swimming pool and a large heated outdoor pool too, which was just about to be opened for the first time when we visited. The top floor of the Spa is devoted to a state of the art gym, where personal trainers are available if required. The large changing rooms were ‘top notch’ each locker housed a big fluffy

white robe and flip flops, the large shower cubicles would match any top hotel room with clean white floor towels placed outside each shower. There were plenty of big mirrors and hair-dryers available and all immaculately clean. My treatments certainly lived up to the venue as well. To start, a 90 minute, full body Biodynamic Bodywork Massage. Which apparently embraces a full range of therapeutic methods, an effective treatment for relief of many physical, neural and psychological conditions. It blends Western Science with Eastern philosophy and was, by far, the best massage I have ever had. To follow I was treated to a ‘Therapi Honey Facial’. This treatment uses the regenerative and healing properties of honey and propolis products from Therapi, to cleanse, massage, treat fine lines and stimulate collagen. It left my skin feeling radiant and deeply nourished. A wonderful facial, and super relaxing too! Like the hotel, this is no ordinary Spa! We had the most amazing stay, the staff we met were all charming and looked after us so very well. Thank you all, for making our stay so special. We will certainly not forget the time we stayed in the house of Max. Is it any wonder this hotel was named as ‘The best Hotel in the UK’ by The Times? www.beaverbrook.co.uk | 01372 569 799

Leatherhead to provide new home for Surrey Police Headquarters Surrey Police have purchased the former Electrical Research Association and Cobham Industries site on Cleeve Road Leatherhead where they will create a new HQ and operational hub. The new site will bring together teams from the current Guildford HQ, Woking Police Station, Reigate Police Station, the Roads Policing Team and Tactical Firearms Unit. The move is part of an estates project designed to deliver long-term savings for the Police and new efficient ways of working. Councillor Vivienne Michael, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said “We are delighted to hear that the new Surrey Police HQ and operational hub is to be based in Leatherhead. The new purpose

built headquarters will be designed to enable Surrey Police to better meet the challenges of modern policing so this is very good news for Leatherhead, for Mole Valley and for Surrey as a whole.” Councillor Simon Edge, Cabinet Member for Prosperity, added “The planned move by Surrey Police is great news for Leatherhead and complements what we are aiming to achieve with Transform Leatherhead. With a considerable number of staff moving into the new HQ it will help increase footfall in the town and bring investment to the area. The choice of Leatherhead was based on its key central location within the County and good transport links, assets of Leatherhead we are keen to highlight.”

Heads, Shoulders, Hands ... & Computers? Help with taking care of yourself while you use your computer

Have you ever considered just how much time you spend working on your computer? Whether it be sitting at a desk or having a notebook on your lap in front of the TV, the average person spends hours a day in front of their computer and at some point it can take a physical toll on the body. These days repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are not uncommon and they can have a lifelong impact. Which is why it is important to have yourself set up in the best way to avoid it. The first consideration you should make is the eye level of your screen. Your monitor or notebook should be positioned, so your eye level lines up with the top of the display, at arm’s length away from your body. This way your neck can be relaxed, not needing to strain or have your shoulders hunch over. In stock we have a variety of height adjustable monitors, these are really easy to adjust the height and even tilt the monitor and are especially great if the computer is shared, that way whoever is using the machine can adjust it for themselves. Using a notebook at eye level can be a little trickier, but it is equally important. There is a preference these days to use notebooks on our laps or lying down and if you stop and look at yourself you may find you are hunched over trying to look at the screen. Having a notebook stand will lift your machine up and allow you to sit with a straighter back. Avoiding strain on the shoulders, neck and upper back, all round so much better for you and your computer too as this will give the machine better airflow and prevent overheating. Typing and mouse movement is a very common cause of RSI and there are some easy steps that can help you combat RSI. A mouse mat with a wrist support can aid in resting your wrist at a better angle or there are a variety of more ergonomically designed mice for less strain on the hand. This is the same for keyboards, adding a palm rest or purchasing a keyboard with one can make a massive difference for your wrists and support them better while you type. Finally though none of us want to hear it, sometimes the best way to take care of yourself is to take a break from the screen, with so many hours spent staring at it you are straining your eyes and your body. Just taking five to ten minutes away from the screen, stretching your body or going for a short walk can make a big difference to your overall wellbeing. This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Have you seen this south-west sky: its red-cheeked clouds and puffed-up breast that, reaching Ashtead, hears the Rye, whose soft persuasion bids it rest? When other pretty shires are near, why does it pause precisely here? Here where Surrey’s fringes skirt at London’s bustle, hemmed with green, the motorway takes all its hurt away to places less serene. Here’s where cares and woes transform to quiet calm amid the storm. “Howzat?!” the leaping fielders cry my daydream snaps at this ado. The umpire’s finger gives reply which satisfies my question too. It points to heavens that overglide where Ashtead, love and peace reside.

FRIENDS OF

Registered Charity 1178

Friends of the AshLea Medical Practice is a new charity whose goals are to enhance the NHS service you receive at both Gilbert House and Linden House and enable your Practice to give better care to its patients and the wider community. The Charity is managed by 6 Trustees - 3 Medical Staff from the Practice and 3 AshLea Medical Practice Patients. A member of the administrative team acts as Secretary to the Trustees. As a result of very generous donations and the reason for setting up the Charity, we have so far raised over ÂŁ6,000 which has enabled us to initially purchase the following items. : 4 higher, padded chairs (2 in each surgery). These are already being much appreciated by patients who find it hard to sit/stand from a lower chair and the arm rests give added support. : A new Blood Pressure Machine for the waiting room at Gilbert House. You may have noticed that there are currently two there but one is rather old and prone to needing costly repair. When that happens again, it will not be repaired. Blood Pressure machines are available in both surgeries and no appointment necessary!

A B

30 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

Instructions are with the machine and then hand the print-out to reception (with your name and date of birth on the back) and your records will be updated. : A Dermatoscope - a hand-held polarised magnifying light to look at skin lesions to assist with possible diagnosis of cancers. : An additional 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitor. This much needed BP Monitor will enable patients to be assessed as quickly as possible which, in turn, leads to a faster diagnosis and peace of mind. The Charity’s next project? The aim is to fund another Micro-suction Machine which helps many patients with severe hearing problems due, in part, to a build-up of ear wax. It is a common problem and another unit will help to reduce waiting lists across the whole community. Every little bit helps and the Trustees and all involved in this new Charity are most grateful for, not only the donations received to date, but the ongoing support of all its patients. For further information, see our latest newsletter or visit our ppg stand at ashtead village day on the 8th June 2019,

spring to life smoothie

In my new life, as I study naturopathic nutrition, teach at the Leith’s School of Food & Wine, run teenage courses and welcome private clients into my kitchen in the gaps - I need to be full of energy and zest for life! Victoria Boutenko, whose book ‘Green for Life’ is awesome, has lead me to enjoy a daily green smoothie for the past month. She is adamant that we need masses more fresh bitter greens in our lives and that they need to be whizzed in a high-powered blender with lots of fruit to make them palatable. Vitamix or nutribullet in hand and you’re off…. I have been adding fresh ginger and turmeric root to the mix, both amazingly powerful in themselves and think its fab - give it a go!

ingredients Banana Peeled orange (no pips!) Juice of ½ lemon or lime (to taste) 1” fresh ginger, peeled Huge handful of kale or spinach leaves (stalks removed) 1” fresh turmeric (often a bit fiddly to peel, so I just wash it!) Water w: WWW.BEINTHEKITCHEN.CO.UK

recipe No need for a recipe as such, just stuff your blender with the following ingredients, adding water up to about half way and whizz. Don’t forget to taste it, sometimes you might want to add more fruit (another or orange or a pear perhaps). It should be zingy, brilliantly green and delicious! note: interchange green leaves with parsley, celery,

romaine lettuce etc - but don’t use Spring Greens - they are far too hard core even for me!!! e: BE@KASSAPIAN.COM

Could Sailing Float your boat? SUCCESSFUL LOCAL CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

After a fantastic response last year the Channel Sailing Club in Ashtead is again throwing open its boats for new members to go yachting. It is joining the Royal Yachting Association’s prestigious ‘Push the Boat Out’ campaign in May. This year the club’s initiative is aimed not just at people keen to try sailing for the first time, but also those who want to return to the sport as well as dinghy sailors thinking of moving to bigger boats. The Channel Sailing Club welcomes those who might like to enjoy a ‘taster day’ on a yacht in the Solent - completely free of charge. You don’t have to be a member of our friendly club, but we hope you will join if you like your experience on board. If you’re interested in our ‘Push the Boat Out’ programme come along to one of our Wednesday social evenings in May. We meet at 8pm at Ashtead Cricket Club in Woodfield Lane, Ashtead KT21 2BJ. The RYA’s Push the Boat Out is about getting out on the water and discovering sailing near you. Nearly 400 UK venues are involved with Push The Boat Out 2019, offering an opportunity to experience the joy of sailing or windsurfing in May. The Channel Sailing Club was launched more than 40 years ago in Ashtead by a group of sailors who lived in or nearby the area.

Most members’ yachts are on the south coast, principally in the Solent, where exciting racing and friendly cruises take place. The Channel Sailing Club is aimed at sailors of all abilities, from novices to salty sea dogs. And you don’t have to own a boat to be a member. It aims to provide experience at sea and be a vital meeting point for people who either love sailing or want to learn. Many of the 190 members - who live far and wide - have gained RYA qualifications at the club. Membership is just £30 a year and newcomers are offered friendly guidance from an experienced member who can explain what goes on, answer queries and help make introductions to other members. While there are about 50 members with boats, many people happily sign up as crew for lively racing and relaxed cruising events along the south coast. Sailing activities include: * Social rallies, typically in ‘home waters’ that include a BBQ or dinner in a yacht club. * Experience weekends which involve structured activities such as helming, mooring and safety awareness. * A thrilling yacht racing programme. We also help members join in non-club events such as the famous Round the Island race. Come along to see why we are so successful! For more details visit: www.channelsailingclub.org

HAMPTON COURT PALACE GARDEN FESTIVAL

©RHS / Anca Panait

From 1st to 7th July, The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) largest flower festival will return to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. With an abundance of beautiful gardens and plants on display, the festival will bring together thoughtprovoking designs to highlight the power of plants alongside plenty of inspiration for visitors to grow a garden they love. A new Global Impact Gardens category will address challenges we face in today’s world through plants and design, whether they are social, economic or environmental issues, with this year welcoming two first time designers. The Forest Will See You Now by Michelle Brandon will highlight the benefits of trees, recreating a forest contained in an oversized packet of pills as it champions nature as a medicine in the 21st century. Also demonstrating how nature is imperative to happiness in a digital age, Seonaid Royall’s Believe in Tomorrow will reconnect children with nature. Other gardens will embrace sustainability. Designer Tony Woods and Thames Water will highlight the need to take care of our water resource. The Thames

Water Flourishing Future Garden will demonstrate how gardeners can encourage biodiversity, reduce water use and prevent flooding. Last year’s Best in Show designer Matthew Childs will also highlight the environmental benefits of getting a Smart Meter with Smart Energy GB. The RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival will run from 1 – 7 July. The exclusive Preview Evening* held on Monday 1 July is the perfect opportunity for those wanting to be one of the first to experience this year’s gardens. For further information or to buy tickets, please visit the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt

Repair & Fresh New Look for Leatherhead’s High Street Feature Working together, Mole Valley District Council & Surrey County Council have recently completed works to repair the pedestrian ramp & ornamental ironwork feature on Leatherhead High Street.

Councillor Simon Edge, Cabinet Member for Prosperity said, “We are delighted that this High Street feature has been much improved. The ramp surrounding the beautiful iron works created by local artist Lucy Quinnell of Leatherhead’s Fire and Iron Gallery has in recent years, been difficult to keep in repair. It was letting the town and artwork down and the broken tiles were a safety issue. The ramp has been given a much needed interim repair in response to community and business concerns. “We worked closely with our colleagues at Surrey County Council to see these works completed. Mole Valley District Council used developer contributions to pay 50% of the costs and Surrey County Council funded the balance through the Mole Valley Local Committee and managed the contracted works. The works, included removal of the slate panels, many of which were damaged or missing, and their replacement with a simple, easily maintained, painted render. The works also included some minor drainage improvements and a pressure wash of the Yorkstone paving.

62 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

“We are pleased that the ramp is now a safer and more attractive feature of Leatherhead’s High Street. These works were a necessary cost-effective interim solution whilst medium to long-term plans are agreed for Leatherhead’s Town Centre as part of the wider Transform Leatherhead initiatives.” Mole Valley Local Committee Chairman and SCC Councillor for Leatherhead and Fetcham East, Tim Hall added, “Transform Leatherhead is a long term project. This repair, 50% of which was funded through the Mole Valley Local Committee revenue maintenance budget, is an investment in the street scene at the High Street/Bridge Street and North Street Junction for the short to medium term, which is an important gateway and centre point to the Town. All the research shows that a better street scene adds to the footfall and viability for a town like Leatherhead. So this is aimed to boost confidence in the town.” Find out more about Transform Leatherhead at www.transformleatherhead.com.

ASHTEAD W.I. APRIL MEETING REPORT It was a very cosy April gathering as we were back in the Ralli Room for a one-off meeting, and again we welcomed another new member to Ashtead W.I. Many of us had very much enjoyed the wonderful ‘Calendar Girls, The Musical’ recently, a hilarious and thought-provoking afternoon together, and we have Hatfield House to look forward to later this month. Also, Ashtead were pleased to announce that one of our members, Carol Day, would be the new Emlyn Downs Convenor. There will soon be a new members evening, and plans are in place for Ashtead Village day in June. It seems we can all agree that ‘Everyone Has a Story to Tell’, the subject of this evening’s speaker Pat Mitchinson. Pat had worked for the BBC and helped arrange the origins of the very popular series Who Do You Think You Are? from its very early days as a magazine recording family history reminiscences. When the TV programme was planned, few celebrities were interested in appearing, though of course were applying in great numbers as it very quickly took off, but none of the participants are told in advance about what has been found. Pat reminded us of some highlights, such as Frank Gardner being traced back to William the Conqueror, and Danny Dyer being directly descended from Edward III, though many were much less fortunate. Tracing histories is extremely time-consuming, it takes a researcher at least a year of research for each celebrity shown and of course we were intrigued to hear about some of the secrets and scandals which had arisen during all the research. Some members will now be looking at the BBC website for hints & tips on how to go about our own family history. After our break we had information on our sub-groups, Easter raffle, and a reminder that there would be a book stall at our next meeting in the main hall on 1st May, 7.15 for 7.30 when our speaker will be Mrs Jo Mabbutt on ‘The Power of Colour – its Impact on our Lives’. MOLE VALLEY W.I. APRIL MEETING REPORT Our meeting was opened by Anne Layman who welcomed two visitors. There were reports from recent events which had been enjoyed and an update on future trips. We have outings going to The Houses of Parliament, a City Safari and Hirst Castle which includes a stop in the New Forrest for afternoon tea. Our Homecraft group had a Quilling evening a new skill for most of us but very enjoyable. We were also advised that the Leatherhead Operatic Society are performing a musical based on Jack the Ripper! Our speaker for the evening, Graham Horn, enlightened us on “Tales of a Blue Badge Guide”. Graham focused on the training required which takes 18 months, 500 hours of study and

lectures and trips on alternate Saturdays during this period. At the end of all this there are four categories of exams which all have to be passed. Blue Badge Guiding is a professional qualification and was started in 1950 in preparation for the Festival of Britain in 1951. Mole Valley WI meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45. Cloud Watching By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham has been discovering the joys of cloud watching. Since the sad loss of our willow tree, one of the unexpected benefits has been that we can now see more of the sky in all its glory. Our back garden faces northwest and so we get some fabulous evening skies. And it’s not only the sun sets and the effects on the clouds all around, some nights there are bands of dark and light across the sky and silhouettes of strong clouds or bands of light and dark within the Skyscape. Other nights the stars are bright and equally beautiful. During the day I’m noticing the clouds too and concentrating on some cloud watching. The size, texture and movement of clouds is fascinating and of course if you are trying to be mindful and enjoy the moment, watching clouds is a great way to connect with nature and stop and relax during a busy and stressful day (or any day for that matter). All this is leading me to think of new ideas for garden designs. I’ve installed an outdoor bath (all properly plumbed in with hot water) so I can lie in the bath and look up through cherry blossom to the sky and down the path to far views of the trees on telegraph hill and the sky above.

68 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

I’d also like to use a frame through which to view the sky and I’d like to design a roof with a perfect hole within to provide a fixed frame to the sky. I’ve also got some ideas to try for a periscope feature so you can easily get a skyward view as for most of us lying down during the day is not really feasible. I’m fascinated by the Japanese idea of Cherry Blossom viewing: what a wonderful idea to grab a picnic rug and lie down and admire the blossom. It shouldn’t just be for one week though, so if it doesn’t happen to be the right time of year for cherry blossom, you could try cloud watching instead. Perhaps a portable empty picture frame would work as a way of framing a view and capturing the movement of the clouds which is so mesmerising. Instead of chucking that old picture frame I think I’ll take the glass out and give it a try. Now it’s just a case of taking the time to stop and stare. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. Well Spring has truly sprung at AllSaints with two new young adults entering our wonderful social enterprise eager to learn both on the job and with their one to one sessions with a tutor and two leaving after completing their training. The biggest achievement for them and for us is seeing their new found confidence which has grown & developed, with our nurturing, over the past 13 months. They also left with an NVQ in Customer Service plus Functional Skills - Level 2 in English & Maths. One took it even further and added a Functional Skills Level 2 in ICT. If the individual is willing there is an extensive list of subjects open to them. Our apprentices join us often with few or no qualifications and can be be lacking in both confidence and self esteem. We offer them a fantastic work environment in which to learn & thrive. Working at each individuals pace, we take them through all aspects of customer service involved in a coffee shop. Learning to handle cash, food preparation, stock rotation, barista skills, presentation & hygiene standards and generally how to handle the public!! We enjoyed a fabulous training session recently from the incredibly passionate team at Beanberry Coffee who are based in Woking. We only serve Beanberry Coffee as they support our beliefs, are a small local company and the Javascript house blend we serve is

also organic. The passion & knowledge which oozes from the Beanberry team is incredible. Being that we serve their coffee it is also in their interest to give us regular training to ensure we get the ‘recipe’ correct in terms of coffee to water ratio, brewing temperatures and time. We may write an article at a later date all about the coffee. It really is quite fascinating and after having worked with such a fabulous product it quickly turns you into a coffee snob without you realising it!! Other news from AllSaints was the great success of our first ‘book swap’. What a great way of recycling a great read you have had for another. Enjoying a freshly made coffee whilst you browse. We are planning on having the larger book swaps on the first Saturday of the month but for those who are regulars may have noticed we have a rather lovely old pine bookcase that has appeared. The selection of books on it is slowing growing. Please feel free to pop along and swap some of your own for ours any day that we are open. Likewise please feel free to read one whilst relaxing as you savour one of our coffees, loose leaf teas or smoothies. We hope to see you soon and remember, every purchase you make at AllSaints helps us to continue supporting local young people in Leatherhead. Thank you for your support and let’s continue to #createchange together! Tina & Nicki

Leatherhead Probus

fabulous Fundraiser

In April, Look Local were invited to join Leatherhead Probus Club for lunch at Tyrells Wood Golf Club. Whilst Probus meet every month, this particular event was a fundraiser in aid of the Lord’s Taverners charity. The Lord’s Taverners is the official charity for recreational cricket and the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity. Its charitable objective is to ‘give young people a sporting chance’. Attending the lunch were many members, their wives and guests as well as several celebrity Lord’s Taverners. See how many you can name from the photograph shown! After the chance to have a drink and a mingle we all sat down to a superb 3 course lunch. I was seated with a lovely group of people, some members and some Probus guests and we all had a great time chatting and exchanging news and views. The celebrities were all seated on their own table and by the looks of things they were all having a great time catching up with each others news. They obviously all know each other well and appeared to enjoy themselves as much as the rest of us. I felt very honoured that we had our very own celebrity on our table (See photo). Yes our very own Jimmy Greaves aka Jack McClean. According to Jack’s wife, Betty (on Right in photo) he gets asked for his autograph

72 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

wherever they go. An obliging gentleman, Jack always says Yes!. Responding “I’ll be happy to sign my autograph for you, but I’m not Jimmy Greaves”!! For our interest and entertainment, the guest speaker was Inspector Ken Wharfe MVO, ex-SAS and the police protection officer responsible for Lady Diana and subsequently Princes William & Harry. His talk was amusing and enlightening. He spoke eloquently about his time with the princess and whilst he was quite discreet with his anecdotes, we did get a glimpse into his world as it was then! At the end of the afternoon there was also the chance to buy his book and have it signed (by Ken Wharfe, not Jack!!). As part of the fundraising there was an auction and a raffle, with some fabulous prizes up for grabs. The event raised over £4000 for the charity. An amazing amount! Well done to Leatherhead Probus and there supporters for raising such valuable funds for such a great charity. Leatherhead Probus is celebrating its 50th year this year. They meet for lunch on the first Tuesday of the month at Tyrells Wood Golf Club. If you are interested in joining or coming along as a guest contact Jon McCarthy on 07947 361 406 or email membership@probusclubleatherhead.org.uk

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Memories of Ashtead A Surrey Village in World War II

After this year’s AGM in March, Leatherhead & District Local History Society Chairman John Rowley and Ashtead school archivist Patricia Jenkins told the story of how they researched and eventually published their book Memories of Ashtead in World War 2. They explained how it gradually took shape as a result of research and interviews over several years beginning in May 2012. At that time John contacted M e r e d i t h Worsfold, son of a well-known builder of homes in Ashtead before and after the war. The initial enquiry was specifically about flat concrete Edwardian house roofs in Albert Road but from August 2013 he and Patricia began framing ideas for the book. They began collecting available local resources such as the Ashtead Residents Association’s own on-line record A Village; school logs and memoirs, and wartime marriages from the St Giles Church Marriage Register. They investigated the Ashtead War Memorial page on the L&DLHS website, the L&DLHS map of local bombings, other contemporary maps and aerial photographs, and official war diaries of the Royal Norfolk Regiment and the Canadian Signals Corps, the two primary military units billeted in Ashtead during World War 2. In November 2013 they contacted Ann Williams, née

78 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - May 2019

Astridge, daughter of a well-known Ashtead family, in Calgary, Canada, and she helped with extensive research and interviews of veterans and the British girls who had married them and emigrated after the war. From July 2014, John was busy transcribing details of some 40 such weddings of local women and the following year he and Patricia hit the jackpot when they secured typed records of the Canadian War Diaries. From then on it was a matter of continuous interviews and contacts with anyone and everyone with a story to tell about wartime in Ashtead. Ev e n t u a l l y the book emerged from this long process at the end of 2018 and went on sale soon afterwards. Copies are available from local bookshops and from Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage, Church Street following its refurbishment. For more information on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Book Reviews May ‘What Red Was’ by Rosie Price (Hardback, £12.99) This is a remarkable debut - I devoured it. The set up - a charming family and an outsider - will be familiar to any avid reader but what Rosie does with it is subversive and astonishingly good. The two main characters Kate and Max meet in their first term at university and become inextricably entwined - she the outsider beguiled by his apparently glamorous family. A traumatic event at a family party in London and its consequences drive the story.

‘The Parisian’ by Isabella Hammad (Hardback, £14.99) The Parisan illuminates a pivotal period of Palestinian history through the journey and romances of one young man from his studies in France during World War I to his return to Palestine at the dawn of its battle for independence. Set against a landscape of political change that continues to define the Middle East this is an extraordinary and richly imagined debut.

‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ by Liane Moriarty (Paperback, £8.99) This is a locked-door mystery. The nine perfect strangers of the title converge on a remote luxury health resort, Tranquillum House, where they’re promised not just rejuvenation, but reinvention. The strangers are all unhappy with their physical selves and despite the restort’s hefty price tag, Moriarty creates ways in for people from a variety of backgrounds. The differences matter because soon after the retreat begins the group is asked to observe a “noble silence”. The silence envelopes the group as it becomes increasingly clear to readers - even those who have never set an unpedicured toe in a spa - that they should be bolting for the exits. This is again a hugely enjoyable read from Moriarty with a sense of foreboding that builds right until the end.

Princess Alice Hospice extends helping hand for bereaved people, thanks to Surrey Freemasons

People dealing with loss and grief will be able to access new bereavement services across Surrey, thanks to a generous grant from Surrey Freemasons. Following bereavement, even with support from family and friends, people often feel lonely with no one to talk to. Until now the Hospice’s 1:1 and group bereavement support has been available only to the loved ones of people cared for by the Hospice. It has become apparent the need is greater than that; most people do not need 1:1 support, they just need someone to talk to. That is why the Hospice is nurturing and growing a Community Bereavement Support service open to everyone. This service will be developed in collaboration with the people using it and delivered across the Hospice’s 600sq mile care area, at a range of times and locations, by trained and supported volunteers. Princess Alice Hospice will work in partnership with local community groups to create a sustainable network of community bereavement support providers, with the ambition that any bereaved person in the care area will be able to access the social support they need. The £20,000 grant to Princess Alice Hospice from Surrey Freemasons comes through the Masonic

Charitable Foundation (MCF), and Hospice UK collaboration, which is funded by Freemasons, their families and friends from across England and Wales. Rosie Noble, Princess Alice Hospice Families’ and Carers’ Lead, said: “We’re very grateful to Surrey Freemasons for their generous grant, which will enable us to open up more bereavement opportunities across our area to include people whose loved ones were not under our care.” Ian Chandler the Head of Surrey Freemasons said: “I’m very pleased we’ve been able to assist Princess Alice Hospice. They do an outstanding job helping people with terminal or life limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families through very difficult times”. £300,000 is being provided to individual hospices across England and Wales via Hospice UK, the national charity for hospice care. MCF is partnering with Hospice UK to develop and extend bereavement support services in hospices. Last year, the partnership funded nine grants and this year this has risen to 17. Contributions from Freemasons to hospices have exceeded £13 million in England and Wales since 1984 and are continuing to increase at a rate of £600,000 a year.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Making new Connections Two years ago, I began making connections as to how my behaviour affected our world and started to reduce my impact on our planet. In 1950, the population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic. In 2016, 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons. It is estimated that only 9% of all plastic ever made has been recycled, the rest still exists. I started cutting out obvious plastic by buying from farm shops and avoiding packaged products like crisps, yogurts and bottled drinks, buying plastic-free alternatives where I could, giving up what I couldn’t. Having milk delivered to the door to avoid single use plastic bottles. I still couldn’t avoid it, wholefoods, personal care or cleaning products came with pointless packaging and single-use plastic. I couldn’t find anywhere to buy sustainably locally so I thought about how to start my own shop selling them. I researched the products I wanted to offer and looked for local suppliers, got them onboard and encouraged them to reassess how they packaged their products. I soon understood that the problem was bigger than just plastic. Humans are having a significant impact on all aspects of the environment. Climate Change is happening, and it is caused in the main by deforestation, farm animals (mainly cows and sheep) and the mining and use of fossil fuels. Trees are being felled in the Amazon rainforests to provide land for increased beef production at a rate of 27 football fields a minute. This reduces the planet’s capacity to remove harmful gases whilst increasing levels of methane and speeding the loss of bio-diversity in the area. Between 1990 and 2016, 500,000 sq. miles of forest were lost, an area bigger than South Africa. Statistics from 2017 indicate the UK should be able to meet its energy demand by using greener sources; a third of energy used was generated cleanly. The government however has stripped back green incentives and instead they are planning to mine more fossil fuels and increase nuclear power generation. The human population has increased by 130% over the last 50 years, yet freshwater fish and land species have declined (0% and >50% respectively) and 40% of the natural forests have been repurposed for agriculture. Not only are there more of us, but we also each consume more than we used to. Ultimately, my aim is to create a better future for my son. It is currently projected that by the time he is in his late thirties, there will be water shortages, food shortages, dead oceans, polluted air, ozone depletion, global warming, civil unrest, species extinction and humans themselves could be facing their own extinction. I am hoping the words written here inspire you to make changes, making your own connections and see that we can all make a difference to the future for generations to come. Family Gardening Festival Returns

TO RHS GARDEN WISLEY

Green-fingered half term fun from 25 May to 2 June 2019

©RHS /Helen Yates

The Family Gardening Festival is back at RHS Garden Wisley this May half term (25 May-2 June), with a variety of gardening themed activities set to entertain. Throughout half term there will be: an interactive Music Maze playground, with percussion instruments made from entirely recycled materials; wildlife themed sculptures from the Surrey Sculpture Park; microscopes for visitors to take a close look at tropical butterflies, woodlice and ladybirds; and the Laura Wall ‘Goose’ Trail, encouraging children to go on an adventure with the lovable Goose character to look for birds and shapes in the clouds and to splash in puddles. From 25 to 27 May, there will be a variety of wildlife themed activities, including mini pond making demonstrations, a lion and tiger LEGO® ‘make and take’ workshop, RSPB bird spotting walks, and a bookable Goose reading and drawing workshop with Laura Wall (26-27 May). From 28 to 29 May, there will be flower-power themed activities, including forest bathing, seed sowing, pot decorating, and floral arrangement workshops by renowned florist Jonathon Moseley, with a Tudor-

inspired twist. From 30 May to 2 June, there will be plot-to-plate themed activities to inspire young visitors to get handson in the mud kitchen and mini sensory gardens, plus take part in bookable Grow, Cook, Enjoy! workshops. Throughout the week, RHS Garden Wisley will host local societies, such as Surrey Bees, the National Vegetable Society and Hedgehog Society, who will be sharing inspiring information and providing fun activities. Belinda Betts, Head of Site at RHS Garden Wisley, said: “The Family Gardening Festival provides the perfect opportunity for families to get back to nature. Here at RHS Garden Wisley, we have planned a whole host of greenfingered inspired fun to encourage everyone to discover the benefits of gardening and spending time together in the great outdoors.” Normal garden entry applies; events and activities are suitable for all the family. Dog Safety 2019

The internet and social media can offer a frenzy of scare stories of people stealing/poisoning dogs and it is not uncommon for the police to receive calls from dog owners worried about stories of travelling criminals targeting dogs or leaving chalk marks outside properties where there are dogs inside. Wellmeaning people share these stories to make others aware but, sadly, often only spread “urban myths” that cause dog owners unnecessary stress and anxiety. Here are some basic precautions that dog-owners should always consider:• Never leave your pet tied-up unattended; such as outside shops for example. • Make sure your dog is wearing a collar and ID tag when in a public place, as you are now required to do by law. Include your surname, telephone number, address and full post code and if there’s room, put ‘microchipped’ on the tag if your dog has a chip. • Ensure your dog can be permanently identified by its microchip or tattoo. A microchip is normally sufficient to identify your pet if it does become lost or stolen. • Ask your vet to check your dog’s microchip every year to ensure your details are accurate and up-todate. • Clean tattoos with surgical spirit regularly. • From 6 April 2016, all dogs must be microchipped and registered to an approved database by the time

they are eight weeks old. Puppies can usually be microchipped from four weeks of age depending on their size, so ensure this is done as soon as possible. • Keep all documentation relating to your dog(s) in a safe place. Include clear photos of front and side profiles of your dog. Make a note or take a picture of any unusual markings. • Be cautious when choosing someone who will care for your dog(s) while you are at work, in hospital or on holiday. Be clear about when the dog will be handed over and who will collect it. • Use a registered boarding kennel or professional dog carer with documentation to this effect unless you know someone who is trustworthy that will care for your dog in your absence. • Train your dog not to go out of your sight on walks. Use an extending lead if the dog does not comply. Vary your walk times and routes. • Beware of strangers who show interest in your dog and never give any details about your dog. Don’t allow strangers to have their photograph taken with your dog. • Ensure your garden or yard is secure. Check it regularly for wear and tear or gaps. It should keep your dog in and trespassers out. Keep your dog in view when it goes out into the garden and don’t leave it unattended. Also - some more generic advice about staying safe can be found here www.surrey.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/ violence/stay-safe/ Basically subject areas include - Be prepared; Be assertive; Be aware; Trust your instincts; Make a plan; Be vigilant.
