As ever, we’ve had our work cut out this month gathering & collating so much fabulous local information to present here in our little pages. This includes news from Mole Valley District Council who have joined forces with the ‘not for profit’ organisation ‘City to Sea’ to push a fabulous National initiative locally. ‘Refill Mole Valley’ allows you to re-fill your water bottles at various top up points around the area, cutting plastic waste with each fill-up! This is such a great initiative and can save you some £’s too! See inside for details, that’s on page 28. As well as this, we are delighted to bring your attention to another Happy Health Day. Following the success of just such a day in Ashtead last year, this will take place at The Letherhead Institute on 2nd November - so see the website for more information which can be found on page 29 within. News from Mole Valley Probus is also included, as they welcome in their new Chairman for the year. This busy club are the only local Probus group to now welcome lady members! I was delighted to hear that Dame Judi Dench is now a patron of Mole Valley Arts Alive! Apparently Dame Judi lives in Surrey and this is obviously something close to her very talented heart. Leatherhead Town Centre will be the venue for a ‘Spooky Family Night’ on Thursday 31st October. See page 45 for more information on this. Other events this month include a Film Night in Ashtead, an Autumn Fayre in Leatherhead, a Somerset Maugham production ‘For Services Rendered’ performed by the Ashtead Players, and an Art Exhibition at St John’s School with stunning work from Leatherhead Art Club. There are also details of many more great events and things of interest going on around the area but space does not permit me to mention all, I will leave you to discover for yourselves…… Wishing you a great month, and do remember that the clocks will be going back on Sunday 27th October, so let’s all enjoy the last few weeks of light evenings in 2019. Until next time, take care,

Do not let the conundrum of choosing Guardians prevent you from making your Will At TWM Solicitors we understand that choosing Guardians is not an easy decision. Our local expert Adrienne Young suggests some factors you may wish to consider when choosing Guardians, and explains why this decision need not delay putting a professionally-drafted Will in place. Having children is one of the major life events which can prompt people to consider making Wills. However, many parents don’t get round to finalising their Wills because they struggle to know who to name in them as Guardians. Guardians are the people who become responsible for children in the sad scenario that both parents have died before the children reach age 18. Most parents appreciate the significance of their choice of Guardian, but this can lead to them stalling and not finalising their Wills. Clearly, choosing Guardians is a huge decision not to be taken lightly. Emotional as well as practical matters need to be considered. A few of the factors you might want to consider include:
• Location – do the Guardians you are
considering live locally to you, or would they be willing to move? This can mean that your children can remain at their current schools and maintain their existing friendships.
• Do you have a similar parenting style to the people you are considering nominating?
• If you have more than one child, would your children be able to stay together?
• Would the people you are considering have
the time and energy to raise your children to adulthood?
• Do the Guardians you are considering have
other children of similar age to yours? This may or may not suit your children.
• Are your Guardians willing to take your children on? Strictly speaking, you do not need to get their permission for the appointment, but it is almost always sensible to let them know that you are thinking about nominating them.
• Would your children be happy with your
choice? The older they are, the more weight their opinion has.
This may not be an easy decision, but if you are struggling to choose suitable Guardians you should not let this put you off making a Will. Few people know that it is possible for you to appoint Guardians in a separate Deed, either before or after you have made your Will. This means that even if you have not made a firm decision about the Guardians you want to nominate, you can still go ahead and put your Will in place; Guardians can be appointed separately, at a later date. This Deed has the same level of authority as an appointment in your Will. If you have young children, you should consider including trusts in your Wills so that their inheritance from you is managed appropriately by Trustees of your choice. If you do not make a Will, your children can simply inherit outright at age 18, which may well be totally unsuitable. This is an important reason not to delay in putting professionally-drafted Wills in place – and if you have not decided who to name as Guardian, you can do this later on.

MOLEBRIDGE GP SURGERY - We remain hopeful there will soon be greater certainty about the future of the Molebridge GP surgery in Cannonside. Since the application to close the surgery was withdrawn earlier this summer, work has been going on behind the scenes to put the practice on a more secure financial footing. We trust these efforts are now bearing fruit, and the FRA will do whatever it can to support the future of GP services in the village, easily accessible to residents. LITTERPICKING - Thanks to FRA committee member Patty Harrison, this is going from strength to strength on Sunday mornings. It’s a great way of doing something positive for the environment, and getting to know people in your community. If you want to take part (and enjoy a cup of coffee afterwards) everyone meets outside Greenwise at 10am. Litterpicking sticks, gloves and bags are provided, and it’s remarkable how much is collected in the space of an hour. It’s remarkable too how
satisfying picking up rubbish from your local streets can be. Next litterpicking dates are October 27th, November 24th and December 15th. WEBSITE REBUILD - There are changes underway at fetchamresidents.co.uk. With the help of the experts at Tekmate, we are updating the site to make it more secure, and more of an active resource for the village. We hope it will become the main way for residents to join or renew their membership and there will always be something of interest on the site. In the meantime, please bear with us while we rebuild. HELP NEEDED - We’re currently looking for talented Fetcham people to keep the FRA’s admin in tip-top shape. We’re in need of some more secretarial help, and someone to replace our long-serving treasurer, Alan Pooley, who’ll be standing down in the spring. If you would like to know more, please contact our chairman Tim Waller on Chairman@ fetchamresidents.co.uk.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
The Rail Crossings Ashtead’s crossings over the railway are a habitual subject but this article deals specifically with the three pedestrian crossings over the tracks and the incidents outlined below will show why it is worthwhile, and necessary, to address the subject once more.
Following these incidents, Network Rail set up CCTV monitoring on Green Lane and in a one week period identified cyclists crossing the rails without dismounting, joggers with headphones on and dog walkers using loose extended leads with their animals not under close control – and this was before the The three unmanned foot crossings are at Lady schools went back and daily crossings increased. Soon after the fatality at Lady Howard and the nearmiss at Green Lane, another pedestrian who was crossing at Lady Howard simply stepped in front of a train. This time they were distracted by listening to music on their headphones and concentrating on their phone, and not their safety. LOOKING FOR
DOG
LOVERS!
I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. TECHNOLOGY & I.T.
The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7
On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 2 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.
What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has joined forces with not-for-profit organisation, City to Sea's, national Refill Campaign and established a local initiative, Refill Mole Valley. So far, MVDC has been backed by SES Water and a number of business partners and local groups. An estimated 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are bought across the UK each year, resulting in substantial amounts of single-use plastic waste. The wider Refill Scheme aims to cut plastic bottle use by tens of millions each year, in addition to substantially increasing the availability of high-quality drinking water. MVDC is calling on local businesses and volunteers to help spread news of the Refill Mole Valley Initiative and sign up to the scheme themselves. Businesses offering passers-by the opportunity to refill their bottles with water at no cost could see an increase in footfall as they will be listed as a Refill Station on the free Refill phone app so their establishment, complete with refill window sticker, can easily be
Tracey Harwood, Fetch’em from the Cupboard
located by anyone on the go. Regional Refill Coordinator, Mala Nathan, said: "Every time we refill a re-usable bottle instead of buying and throwing away a single-use bottle we not only reduce the amount of plastic and fuel being used we save a bit of money and help clean up our towns and open spaces too. We're so excited to see the launch of Refill Mole Valley which will make it easy to look out for the stickers or check the Refill app to find out where you can top up your water bottle for free." Businesses across Fetcham, Leatherhead & Ashtead who have already joined up include Fetcham Park House, Cook Ashtead, Fetch’em from The Cupboard, Costa Coffee, Greggs, Amici, The Penny Black, Fire & Iron. Lots of other businesses across Mole Valley are getting involved so just look out for the Refill sign. We look forward to more over the coming weeks and months. FOUR WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR ANXIETY Wellness practitioner Emma Wright explains how you can deal with anxiety and take control of your life that you have been in this situation before and you got through it, and you will again - positive self-talk can be a great help.
1. IDENTIFY THE SYMPTOMS When you feel anxious or panicky, the symptoms can be terrifying. They can include tightness in the chest, rapid breathing, raised heart rate and dizziness. Anxiety is usually caused by a build-up of adrenaline which your body can’t cope with – you then become even more anxious, creating a vicious cycle. It almost feels like your body is under physical attack. By learning to recognise when you are feeling anxious, you can identify exactly what is going on and take steps to reduce anxiety, such as deep breathing, or even just removing yourself from a situation. The more often you do this, the easier it will be to reduce your anxiety levels. 2. STOP IT BEFORE IT STARTS When you are feeling anxious, there are steps you can take to reduce it, but you can also stop it before it starts, by identifying the cause or trigger. Do you get anxious in certain circumstances, such as having to do a work presentation, or in crowded public places. If you find that there are times you regularly get anxious, then avoiding them might be a solution in the short-term. If you can’t avoid them, then there are steps you can take such as breathing techniques, meditation and even self-hypnosis. It’s also worth remembering
3. LEARN TO RELAX When you feel anxious, it’s like your mind and body are going at 100 miles an hour. The good news is that we can train our minds (and our bodies) to relax. One of the most effective ways is through diaphragm breathing, which helps slow down your breathing and heart rate. You can practice this both when you are feeling anxious or if you know a stressful event is going to come up. With a relaxed, clear mind, you can empower yourself and take charge of your life. 4. BE KIND TO YOURSELF If anxiety is part of your everyday life, then self-care is vital. Get regular movement and exercise to flush away unwanted adrenaline from the body. Eat natural foods, unprocessed foods and drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they are known to increase anxiety. Get outdoors and interact with people more, and spend less time with IT and gadgets. Don’t overload yourself. Simple is good.
HOW CAN I HELP YOU? I regularly help my clients deal with anxiety and offer a range of services to reduce it both in the short and long term, including Hypnotherapy, Massage, Shiatsu and Reflexology. Do you care for someone who is becoming forgetful or know a carer who needs time off? The Conservatory Club may be able to help. Mid Surrey Dementia Care Trust has owned a conservatory adjacent to the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead since 1995, initially to provide premises for the Alzheimer’s Society to run a small social club there for people in the early stages of living with dementia. The Trust took over full operation of the club in 2003 and in 2019, the Club’s work was recognized when it was among Surrey’s short-listed nominees for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Conservatory Club has two main aims: • To help people with memory difficulties to retain their communication and social skills in a relaxed environment. • To provide relief to carers from the demanding responsibilities of caring. The Club Manager is responsible for the daily running of the Club, which is open from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. The Manager, supported by a volunteer, helps members to participate in social interaction and activities in a relaxed environment, and close contact is maintained with carers to ensure that a member’s wellbeing is paramount. The daily charge is currently £20 and this includes lunch, refreshments and participation in Fairfield Centre special events and classes, if they are appropriate to our members’ needs. If you think membership of the Club could help, please call Pauline Simons (Club Manager) on 07913-707704 or email: info@midsurreydementiacare.co.uk. The Club could not operate without the help of volunteers, each of whom assists on one day a week. If you think that you might be able to help us by volunteering, please contact Pauline Simons using the contact details above. a poached salmon celebration centrepiece Ask the fishmonger for a whole side of salmon with the pin bones and skin removed. (serves 10-12)
ingredients - (A fish poacher is ideal, but can also be poached in a large roasting tin with water to cover the bottom and covered tightly in foil. A temperature food probe is useful if you have one. ) Add to the water the following: • 2 x bay leaves • 1 Lemon • handful of black peppercorns • 1 cucumber • 1 lemon sliced • drizzle of any oil. • watercress
method
1. Bring the water to the boil until steaming, oil the surface the salmon is going to cook on with a
pastry brush. Then place the whole side of salmon on the water or in the poacher. 2. Steam on the hob on a medium heat for 15-20 minutes. The thickest part of the fish should be 55 degrees centigrade for the fish to be just cooked. If you prefer your salmon cooked well, continue cooking until the temperature is 65 degrees centigrade, but the fish will be drier. 3. Remove from the heat and slide onto a long serving platter to cool. 4. Cool for one and a half hours max then dab juices up with some kitchen roll. 5. Peel the cucumber every other strip so that it is stripey then slice very thinly. 6. overlap the cucumber slices from one end of the fish to the other and cut the ends off the lemon. Cut through lengthwise then lie flat side down and slice thinly to decorate down along the cucumber 7. Garnish with watercress or rocket.

DAME JUDI DENCH BECOMES ARTS AL!VE PATRON
National treasure, BAFTA winner and seven-time Oscar nominee Dame Judi Dench will be this year’s Arts Alive festival patron. Dame Judi, who lives in Surrey, is “delighted” to lend her name to Mole Valley’s community arts festival, which this year, in honour of the legendary British actress, has a theatre and film theme. Supported by Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and taking place throughout October, Arts Alive is the biggest arts festival in the South East. As well as film and theatre, there will be music, literature, dance, painting, poetry, modern and traditional crafting and horticulture. Many events are free to attend or under £5 a ticket. Film screenings include Hidden in Plain Sight on Thursday 31 October at Dorking’s Green Room theatre. This event features a series of films shot in the Surrey Hills by local, nationally-acclaimed artists and filmmakers. Theatre includes writer and street performer Nick Casssenbaum’s big-hearted Edinburgh Festival smash hit Bubble Schmeisis at The Stepping Stones pub on Friday 4 October. Theatre and cinema Dorking Halls will also once again be putting on a number of events during the festival, including screenings of productions by the National Theatre, the Royal Opera and the Bolshoi Ballet. They will also host the Wilderland Film 44 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - OCTOBER 2019
Festival on 21 October, which features groundbreaking short films that provide unparalleled insight into some of the world’s most incredible wildlife. The launch event for Arts Alive will take place in Leatherhead High Street on Saturday 21 September from 10am to 12pm. This year, the celebrations will be led by theatre company Cabareilidh, who combine staged folk cabaret with a traditional Surrey ceilidh. There will also be activities for children including face painting and a knights’ battle, courtesy of the medieval festival that will be happening in Leatherhead on the same day. More information will be announced soon. Councillor Stephen Cooksey, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: “We are delighted that one of Britain’s greatest actresses accepted Arts Alive’s invitation to be festival patron. This is fantastic news for our local arts festival, which is incredibly now in its 23rd year. MVDC is proud to support Arts Alive; it is a unique opportunity for the community to come together and engage with the arts.” See the full line-up of events in the festival brochure, which comes out at the end of August. Events will also be listed online at www.arts-alive.co.uk.

CELEBRATING 70 YEARS! Our autumn production, For Services Rendered by Somerset Maugham, now considered one of his best plays, focuses on the after-effects of World War 1 on a provincial middle-class solicitor’s family and their friends. We first meet the Ardsleys in their Kent home in the late summer of 1932. A tennis party is in full swing and the family seems to be managing well. Only through the battle-blinded eyes of young Sydney do we begin to see some hints of the tensions and anxieties below the surface. In reality, each character is fighting for survival, dealing with the war’s challenges and blows as best they can, but the younger generation can no longer live in the footprints of their elders and must find new ways of living in a society significantly changed. For Services Rendered has been called “a masterpiece of textured dramaturgy” and “a counterblast to Noel Coward’s Cavalcade”. The play is particularly extraordinary viewed in retrospect: the lessons of WW1 written clearly across the lives of characters who, less than a decade later, would find themselves at war again.

ASHTEAD W.I. SEPTEMBER MEETING REPORT Back from our Summer break we welcomed four visitors to our September meeting one of whom was visiting us from Arizona. Our speaker Jackie Simmonds still with the poise and elegance of a dancer told us about her life as a Tiller Girl. She joined the troupe at the age of seventeen and appeared on TV programmes such as Sunday Night at the London Palladium and the Billy Cotton Band Show. The girls trained hard to perfect their synchronised dance routines but had great fun in spite of being forbidden to socialise. In their time off they did charity work opening garden fetes etc. During her long career Jackie had worked with many of the top entertainers such as Morecombe and Wise and Jimmy Tarbuck. She recalled how on one occasion she had shared a cream bun with Bob Hope. However by the 1970s things changed in the
entertainment business and the public wanted more modern acts such as Pan’s People so the Tiller girls were disbanded. It was the end of an era. Jackie went on to join the Black and White Minstrels and then on to a career as an actress. Jackie persuaded some of our members to join her to practise some synchronised dance moves but our kicks were not very high and we were anything but synchronised! In the future we are looking forward to a Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy at the end of September and the Emlyn Downs Group are hosting an Edwardian Evening in October. Our next meeting will be at 7.15 for 7.30 on 2nd October when Ian Currie will tell us about “The History of Weather forecasting.” Please see our website at: www.Ashteadwi.co.uk

MOLE VALLEY W.I. AUGUST MEETING REPORT Our annual picnic was held at the King George Vth Hall. Our President, Ann Layman, welcomed everyone & greetings were given to members who have recently had birthdays. Maureen Underdown was thanked for hosting the successful Garden Party. Members were reminded of forthcoming events & outings. These include a Quiz Night, Theatre Trip & a sightseeing outing to Essex. This was followed by a most enjoyable talk by Jeff Rozelaar entitled “Bacon & Bagels”. He gave a fascinating account of his years growing up near the Tower of London. Many of us could relate to the early school memories. He entertained us with songs from his childhood that many of us could
recall fondly. He also amused us with anecdotes of later occurrences in his life. Tea was served after the talk & we were treated to a delicious spread of homemade sandwiches & cakes. Thanks were given to the members who had worked hard preparing the food. Our monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45pm. We have a range of other activities including bridge, gardening, rambling & badminton. New members are always welcome, further details can be found on our website www. molevalleywi.btck.co.uk From Carol Murray
FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. AUGUST REPORT Although we did not hold our usual W.I. meeting in August we did arrange a barbeque on the first Wednesday afternoon. We were invited to stage this at Pat and Eric’s lovely garden in Fetcham. Attended by 30 guests the rain held off until we were seated and served, then the heavens opened and we got drenched. The niceties of birthday greetings to Pat and Annie had to be informally made, and the proposed raffle abandoned before we had even sold any tickets. In spite of all this the food as always was excellent, we had great skills from Eric, Keith, Shane and Keith on the hot coals, and everyone enjoyed themselves as we roamed from garden
to marquee to house depending on the deluge. It goes without saying that half an hour after the last person had left the sun shone relentlessly. Two Garden Safaris were enjoyed this month and the green fingered amongst us can really say that we are seeing our plots with fresh eyes and lots of new planting ideas. Speakers for 2020 have been booked and these are all new to our W.I. Next meeting is on Wednesday 4th September, 7.30 pm in Fetcham Village Hall. The speaker, Victoria Hislop will be speaking of India, and we will feature our postponed raffle. Do come and say hello. MAUREEN WEBB

LEATHERHEAD PROBUS LIVES ON!
Probus is a club for men who are retired but with active minds who want to meet socially each month - first Tuesday in Tyrrells Wood Golf Club - for an excellent lunch with speaker. We welcome members from Leatherhead and surrounding areas including Ashtead, Dorking and Bookham/Fetcham. Leatherhead is one of the oldest clubs in UK founded 50 years ago - when most of the current members were just starting out on their careers! We will be celebrating this birthday in November. The success of the club is a result of the quality of the after-lunch speakers. In recent years we have also been entertained by celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainment. Bob Willis, Rob Andrew, Chris Tarrant, Bernard Gallagher, Sir Richard 62 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - OCTOBER 2019
Stilgoe, Sir Michael Parkinson and others all come to mind. Chris Cowdrey will be with us in April 2020. Although membership is currently men-only, ladies are invited to social events and are invited to hear interesting speakers. Our Christmas lunch is on 3rd December when our entertainer will be Ian Gallagher, a truly outstanding singer with a wide repertoire including Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis etc. If you are interested in joining this Club, do send us an email today - Jon McCarthy membership@ probusclubleatherhead.org.uk 4543. You will get a friendly reception when you come along to any event.
MOLE VALLEY PROBUS CLUB Another Bookham man elected chairman of the Mole Valley Probus club.
At their July AGM Chris Thomas of Little Bookham, left in photo, took over responsibility from Ron Burge of Great Bookham as Club Chairman. Chris heads a progressive and active club, previously for retired professional and business men, but now also welcoming ladies with a similar background. The only local Probus Club in the area to do so. The Club has some seventy members, but still room for a few more. We have a monthly lunch, with a topical speaker, and a raffle to support our charity fund. Since the club started in 1992 we’ve so far raised some
£40,000, which we have donated to charities based in Mole Valley area. We have monthly walks, starting with coffee and ending with a pub lunch, and popular coach, and river boat outings where up to 50 club members and their partners enjoy a day visiting places of interest, or a major London concert or spend a day discovering historic parts of London. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
Fascination guaranteed with this programme of talks Another really varied selection of topics is scheduled for the last quarter of the year in the monthly lecture series organised by the Leatherhead & District Local History Society. The talks, all scheduled at the Letherhead Institute on the third Friday of each month, will kick off on Friday, 18 October with The British Hedgerow - Past and Present. Professor Pat Wiltshire will outline how the hedge came to be and how its management and exploitation have influenced the nature of the local landscape. She will also discuss the natural history of hedges and their Patricia Wiltshire importance for biodiversity. As well as being a keen L&DLHS member, Pat Wiltshire is a renowned expert on the relevance of nature in forensic science. Her new book, Traces has been described as ‘part rhapsody for the natural world and part lecture on forensic science’. It demonstrates how a deep understanding of both is integral to the success in solving crimes. On Friday, 15 November, Jane Lewis of Surrey History Centre will talk on Fashion and Folly, describing how people have done alarming and bizarre things over the years to enhance their beauty and be regarded as fashionable. Our ancestors’ clothes and makeup were seriously dangerous. They went to extraordinary lengths to be ‘à la mode’. Finally on Friday, 6 December, the L&DLHS 66 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - OCTOBER 2019

will hold its traditional Christmas Miscellany of three shorter talks preceded by seasonal cheer and refreshments. This year, Society chairman John Rowley will introduce Commander Alexander ‘Alastair’ Guthrie Denniston of Ashtead. A wartime code-breaker, he headed the Government Code and Cypher School, forerunner of GCHQ. L&DLHS archaeology secretary Nigel Bond will follow up with a review of the Test Pitting project at Rowhurst, one of Leatherhead’s most historic centres, last May. He will reveal what was found, its significance for historical knowledge of the area and what may happen next. The programme will end with Society stalwart Bill Whitman presenting a short photo and film programme entitled Walking in Leatherhead. This was shot by Gill Whitman, mainly on the town meadow. All of the talks start at 8pm in the Letherhead Institute in Leatherhead High Street with drinks and refreshments served from 7.30pm. Entrance is just £2.00. For more information about the L&DLHS and the Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage in Church Street, go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.
THE CIVIL SERVICE RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP
Serving Your Community
Group members at a recent meeting at the Fetcham Village Hall
For over 50 years the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship (CSRF) has provided a forum for friendship and companionship within local communities around the country. As the charity celebrates the contribution its local groups make to the organisation’s services, CSRF Chief Executive David Tickner paid a visit to the Leatherhead group which offers a busy programme of activities which are open to any local retired person Established initially as a charity to support former civil servants and their dependents it has evolved in recent years to offer services to those in later life. These currently include a local community group network, two national befriending schemes (Phone Buddy & National Visitors Network) and information and advice. The group network provides a valuable service to retired and older people within the community offering an important forum for friendship and companionship, educational speakers and leisure activities. The Leatherhead group has been running for over 40 years and is keen to attract new interest from any retired people within the town and local area. I visited the Leatherhead group for their monthly meeting earlier last week to show our support of the incredible dedication and commitment of
our group volunteers. All our groups are run by volunteers, many of whom spent their whole careers in public service. The group is run by former civil servants Barbara West, Anne Thomson and Gwen Hoad who all worked in various government departments during their civil service careers. They are a good example of the many group leaders we have across the country who have been instrumental maintaining our group in Leatherhead. As a charity, the CSRF receives no government funding. We rely very much on fundraising activities and donations to support our work. Our 2019 Connecting Our Communities initiative is designed to recognise and celebrate our group networks contribution to community life with the intention of raising awareness of their activities to hopefully attract new people along to their meetings. More Information The Leatherhead group meets on the first Friday of the month at 10am at John Rumble Hall, Fetcham Village Hall, The Street, Fetcham KT22 9QS. All local retired people are very welcome to attend. You can find out more information about the group online at www.csrf.org.uk/leatherhead or by contacting Group Secretary Anne Thomson on T: 01372 373258 or E: anner.thomson@talktalk.net ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - OCTOBER 2019

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead How Green is your Garden? I am a keen gardener. I have just finished reading “Merry Hall” by a once-famous gardening writer Beverly Nichols who lived in Merry Hall in Agates Lane in Ashtead in the 1950’s. His rather florid story telling is interspersed with some nice gardening advice and humour. But amongst it, there are things which are relevant today, such as importing plants from abroad without licence and taking them from the wild – definite no-no’s today - and concerns about species loss and control of pests and plant disease. But he also presciently expresses concern for the impact of some of his means of controlling insects, plant disease and weeds. Thank goodness the armoury of toxic and hazardous chemicals that were then widely used have been largely superseded by less harmful (both environmentally and human toxicity) materials – sometimes not so effective but safer. We are definitely better off without DDT, creosote and mercury and copper salts in our gardens and on our flowers and vegetables. But what of the other things we regularly use in our gardens such as peat-based compost, plastic flower pots, slug pellets and weed-killers? All of these have been given some publicity over the last couple of years as we are forced to, or are pressurised, to move away from what we have found effective. Are the new alternatives up to it, and if they are not then what can you do about it while trying to be environmentally friendly and legal? Peat for example - the government and gardening organisations all agree that the use of peat should be phased out and replaced by sustainable and if possible, locally sourced alternatives; for peat extraction has significant ecological and climate change impacts. The quality and consistency of peat-free media has been improving in recent years, so much so that the RHS is stopping selling peat-based compost this year. Black plastic plant pots are an issue - black plastic can’t be recycled - but thank goodness there are changes afoot to tackle this in terms of material and colour of these pots to improve the recycling options. One big question for gardeners, now that the summer has turned wet, is how to control slugs and snails as “blue death” metaldehyde slug pellets are to be banned? The ban was due to start this summer for gardeners, but has just been overturned by the courts. However, many stores have stopped selling metaldehyde products, so what to do? The pet and environmentallyfriendly alternatives that are being offered are based on ferric phosphate, aluminium sulphate, bio-control nematodes, and barriers like copper tape and wool pellets. They seem to work! One area that is still pretty controversial is that of the use of weed-killers – particularly those based on glyphosphates like Roundup and Resolva. There is much debate about their environmental and human safety. But that’s probably for another time – the environmentally precautionary answer is do not use them unless you really have to and then only sparingly. OCTOBER BOOK REVIEWS The Love Detective by Angela Dyson (fiction) What if your friend asked you to investigate her boyfriend one day? Would you do it? Could you do it? Well the main character of ‘The Love Detective’ has no troubles whatever, as Clarry Pennhaligan becomes an amateur sleuth. This novel is fun, with many distinct characters and fun scenes leaving their mark on the story. The book also has a cheeky side to it that only a female writer could get away with. While this book is a light read to begin with, our main character starts getting caught up into the darker world of life. A perfect holiday read for sunny weather. The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor (fiction) Told from the perspective of Eddie Adams, this novel shifts between two differing timelines; his childhood in 1986, and present day. The initial glimpse into his childhood begins harmlessly, transporting you to the innocent life of a group of 12 year old friends in the 80’s. However, their lives take a turn for the worse, and in the present day the events of that past resurface. We follow present day Eddie having to try to solve the mysteries of his past, as Tudor slowly reveals events to us. This is the sort of book that is permanently on your mind because just as soon as you think everything’s falling into place, something else goes wrong and it falls apart all over again. Completely unpredictable and thoroughly enjoyable! The Happiness Trap by Dr. Russ Harris (non-fiction) This ‘self-help’ book has been a best seller for many years and, as a fellow anxiety sufferer and previous mental health nurse, I highly recommend it. The popular ideas about ‘normal’ levels of happiness are misleading, inaccurate, and, as Harris explains, directly contributing to the extreme increase of stress, anxiety and depression that we are experiencing in western cultures; creating a ‘psychological trap’ whereby the more we strive for happiness, the more we increase anxiety long-term. Harris offers very simple and easy-to-use methods to combat stress and anxiety in the immediacy, using the mindfulness skills of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The explanations in this book are so easy to understand so is suitable for any level of knowledge of the subject (and when you’re actually experiencing such symptoms it’s harder to absorb information so ‘easy-to-follow’ info is essential). It was deemed as ‘groundbreaking’ back in 2008 but remains completely relevant and essential skills to have today. www.bookpotato.org / 01372 879362 / Unit 25, The Swan Centre, High Street, Leatherhead, KT22 8AH

“If you like, I can fix that guttering for you - for cash?” NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
Hearing that kind of phrase is, for some reason, more common towards the latter part of every year. Perhaps, with winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of ongoing work we do already, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. Distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting as they prey on people’s trust in “authority”. For example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the 80 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - OCTOBER 2019
house to “carry out checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Rogue traders tend to be people who offer to carry out work for cash, quite often for sums of money far greater than is actually justified. Examples could be, repairs to “leaking” guttering, replacing ridge tiles, repainting windows and sills, cutting back hedges and other general maintenance work. Many of these people are not even competent to carry out work of this kind and apply pressure to get the customer to go to their bank to draw out the large sum of cash in payment. You can always contact Trading Standards to ask for names of reputable organisations that will carry out work for a fair price. In short, traders who offer to carry out work for cash uninvited should be viewed with some suspicion. You have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who calls at your home uninvited. If you are ever put in this position and feel in any way vulnerable, please call the police on 999.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE - We hope the junior readers who completed the Summer Reading Challenge enjoyed the different books they read! Ashtead Library has been extremely busy handing out certificates to all the children who completed the challenge by reading six books over the summer break. Well done! Keep an eye out for our Halloween Event, details will follow shortly on our website.
Are you aware we have a Digital Buddy every Thursday 2-4pm? - A digital buddy is able to help with computer queries, using a library PC, your own laptop or tablet. If you would like any computer related help, then please book a slot at the desk or ring 0300 200 1001 and ask for Ashtead Library. WEEKLY RHYMETIME SESSION - This is a great opportunity to have fun with your baby/toddler through rhythm, actions and singing and introduce children to all the library has to offer. The Rhymetime session is available on Friday 10:15am for 30 minutes. Places are limited so please arrive early. Do you have an hour to spare on Friday morning? We would love to have another Rhyme Time Volunteer. Please look on line or come to see us at Ashtead Library. Keep an eye on our twitter account @AshteadLibrary for upcoming events and activities.
Congratulations to all the children who completed our Summer Reading Challenge before they went back to school last month. We hope it has helped to maintain your reading skills over the long break. Now, if you are already looking forward to halfterm, we’ve got some craft activities planned on Thursdsay 31st October, 2.30pm - 3.30pm. We’ll be making macramé hanging plant holders with those able to tie the knots, while younger children can decorate a little pot. Tickets are £1 per child from the Help Desk. This month, on 2nd - 16th October, Leatherhead Library is also holding an exhibition of wildlife photography by Jenny DeSoutter. The exhibition forms part of the 2019 Mole Valley Arts Alive programme. Jenny’s pictures were all taken in
this area, with beautiful close up shots revealing the wonders of nature around us. The exhibition moves on to Dorking Library 17th October – 1st November. Do you have a couple of hours to spare on a Thursday morning? We would really welcome a temporary volunteer to help us run our two Rhyme Time sessions for our youngest members. We run a half-hour session at 10am and another at 11am. It’s been said that ‘a library card is a powerful weapon to change lives’ (Val McDermid on Radio 4). Today you don’t even need your library card if you can download the Library app on to a smart phone! Please support your local library. Leatherhead is open every day except Sundays and Mondays, 9.30am - 5pm.
