I do hope you have all enjoyed a good summer and that you’re feeling refreshed and ready to step into the new autumn season… Here’s hoping for an ‘Indian Summer’ as the schools head back to start the new term and the more senior students head off to Uni or work experience, Gap Years or even new jobs! It’s always a time of year for new beginnings and I wish you all the very best with these adventures, whatever they may be! As always, there are lots of events to look forward to locally, this month, so please do take some time to cast your eyes over our ‘What’s On’ & ‘Regular Events’ pages. As well as these, Heritage Open Days will be taking place during September, so do see details on pages 82/3. We are also delighted to include this month, information about a ten week course for improvers from Leatherhead Bridge Club, and on a different note, details of a comedy fundraiser taking place at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, see page 54 for details on this. Epsom General Hospital’s Neuro Physio Department were recently presented with a brand new specialist hoist, by the Mayor of Epsom, on behalf of the Epsom Medical Equipment fund. What great work these fundraisers do for our local hospital, and in turn, for us. Read all about this within. I wonder if like me, you are considering the option of an electric car? We hear from Tony Cooper who kindly reports on his first year as an Electric Vehicle owner! I think this simply has to be the way forward if we stand any chance of saving our precious planet. See Tony’s report on the Transition Ashtead page. If you are interested in local history, do have a go at our competition on page 80. A fabulous little book, ‘Surrey’s Military History” provides a fascinating window into events, people and places and you could win a copy. Good Luck to all who enter. Wishing you all a great month, until next time...

A home for life - providing for your pet’s future If a dog is a man’s best friend then making sure that they (or any other pet) are provided for if something happens to you will be a priority for all animal lovers. The good news is that you can make provision in your Will for what will happen to your pet when you die. However, it is not possible to make a gift to your pet, so it is important to take advice so that a correctly drafted clause can be included in your Will to name someone you would like to take care of them. The first consideration is who you would like to look after your pet. Once you have decided this, it is sensible to discuss with that person whether he or she would be happy to take on this responsibility. Another consideration is funding the care of your pet for the rest of their life including food, pet insurance and future veterinary and boarding costs. It is possible to make a gift to whomever you have requested to look after your pet, to cover the costs of their future care. This gift can be conditional on that person taking over responsibility for your pet. However, professional advice should be sought to ensure that the correct wording and clauses are used. Additionally, you should consider providing in your Will not only for your current pet but also any pets you may have at the time of your death.

It is also possible to name a substitute beneficiary to care for your pet in the event that your first choice is unable to do so, or dies before you. If you cannot think of anyone who could look after your pet, there are many animal charities that run free schemes to rehome and provide for them. If this is something you are considering, we can work with you and your chosen charity to incorporate the right clause into your Will to reflect your wishes. Some charities also have schemes that you join independently of preparing your Will, in relation to the future care of your pet. Providing for your pet(s) in your Will is the best way to ensure that they will be looked after when you die. However, consideration should also be given to what will happen to your pet if you become unwell or lose mental capacity. Preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney for your property and financial affairs is essential for this, as it allows you to give authority to your attorney to manage your affairs and finances. This means that making provision for your pet and tasks such as paying for vets’ bills or for temporary care can be dealt with by your attorney. We will be pleased to advise and assist with any aspect of matters mentioned above.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

“Slow News” time... If it wasn’t for Boris and Jeremy slugging it out, travelling the country and appearing on TV being grilled by hugely overpaid inquisitors, it would be what’s known as a “Slow News” time. This is normally when the newspapers are filled with pictures of carrots and potatoes looking like wellknown or even less well-known celebrities! It’s the same in Ashtead, and we’ve not had the dubious pleasure of having Boris and Jeremy seeking our endorsements. So what can I tell you? We have a new party running Mole Valley District Council, but this publication frowns upon political commentary so “nuf said!” The good news is that at long last we are going to get a Puffin Crossing on the A24 by Bramley Way. Back in 2016 two ladies (let’s call then Julia and Jayne – ‘cos that’s their names) with children at the Greville School, approached the Residents’ Association asking for our assistance in making the crossing of the A24 safer for parents and children going to The Greville School, or crossing the other way to The Burrows Nursery. At Bramley Way the road only had a small pedestrian refuge in the middle of the A24, and a mother with a small child in tow, perhaps with a smaller sibling in a pushchair felt understandably very vulnerable with cars and lorries travelling on each side at speeds up to (and occasionally in excess of ) 40mph. They wanted a proper light controlled pedestrian crossing, and ideally the 30mph zone moved further back towards Epsom past Craddocks Avenue. This would also make it safer for vehicles emerging from Park Lane. Their pressure, and support from Chris Townsend (Surrey County Council Councillor) and Peter Stanyard (then a Mole Valley Councillor) enabled the proposal to go before the 10 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

Local Committee where support for their crossing scheme was formally sanctioned and funds allocated. The area is a tricky one to have a crossing being just after the brow of a hill and near to the exit from Bramley Way. These things move at the inevitable snail’s pace and have to go through all sorts of hoops before a road drill is even picked up, but now at long last it seems during the August school holidays a new Puffin Crossing is to be built. The 30mph zone fight is ongoing, but has the support of all Ashtead Councillors. We just need to change Surrey Highway’s mindset that prevention is better than the alternative. As all the good news bulletins say - “In other news…..” the iron footbridge across the railway was closed for a week much to the consternation of the many residents who use it each day to take their children to the nursery in Woodfield, or to the shops, or in the other direction, to The Common. After much fruitless enquiry it was left to one person who was fortunate enough to have made some good contacts in Network Rail to discover what was going on and when it would be re-opened. And re-opened it was in the timescale predicted with replaced woodwork, new non-slip coverings and with the rainforest cut back on either side. In hindsight, as we have pointed out to Network Rail, it would have been better for them to have told us their plans, then we could have published the news on the interweb. And finally (no, not a dog skateboarding) any Road Steward reading this who has not collected their road subs, it would be appreciated if this could be carried out quickly so our Membership Secretary can put the Accounts to bed for another year. OAKFIELD SCHOOL - It was a great pleasure for the FRA to once again make bursary awards to pupils at Oakfield. Every year we sponsor two awards, with one child in each class receiving an Amazon gift token. The John Piper Award recognizes excellence in presentation, and the Growth Mindset Award recognizes perseverance and the ability to challenge themselves and learn from mistakes. The awards were presented at the Celebration Assembly in July by FRA committee members Patty Harrison and Sylvia Oliver. We also had the chance to see the progress of Oakfield’s outdoor learning area, now featuring some impressive vegetables, which was also supported by FRA funds. HERITAGE OPEN DAYS - No less than two historic properties in Fetcham are opening their doors this year as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme. On the evening of Friday September 20th, Fetcham Park House will be showing off its recently restored Louis Laguerre murals. Painted 300 years ago, these

murals have been the subject of painstaking work this summer by expert restorer Paul Tsangari. He will be on hand to talk about the project, together with local historian Vivien White who will describe Fetcham Park’s colourful history. On the weekend of 14th and 15th September there will also be a chance to explore St Mary’s Church, Fetcham. There will be guided tours of a building where worship has been taking place for a thousand years. For more details, go to the MVDC website and search for Heritage Open Days. MEMBERSHIP - It’s still not too late to renew your FRA membership for this year and of course we always welcome new subscribers. It’s faster and easier to go to our website www.fetchamresidents. co.uk and follow the membership link, but you are also very welcome to use the printed form below. The more members we have the stronger we can be in standing up for Fetcham’s interests, so thank you for your support.

MAKER OF EXTRA-ORDINARY CAKES MOVES BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN IN EPSOM After 5 and a half years away in Hampshire, successful cake business, The Daisy Cake Company has returned to where it all began in Epsom.

The Daisy Cake Company was founded by Bronya Seifert 9 years ago and built its name at events such as The Banstead Countryside Day and those held at The Children’s Trust. The Daisy Cake Company became a well know name around the area and attended wedding fairs and produced customer cakes for all kinds of events and occasions. Five and a half years ago Bronya moved to Hampshire to be closer to her family. She opened a shop, won local food awards and became the go to place for spectacular and extra-ordinary cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and every other kind of occasion. Bronya said “Hampshire has been good to The Daisy Cake Company. But now it’s time to move back to where it all began. The Hampshire Cake Studio is established and will continue to run under the guidance of our Head Baker, but it’s time for The Daisy Cake

Company to come home to Epsom.” Since being away Bronya has honed her skills and now produces fantastic and extreme cakes from beautiful wedding cakes to extra-ordinary, gravity defying celebration cakes. Sugar flowers are her passion, but sculpted and carved cakes make her excited about how cake can push the boundaries between art and food. LOOKING FOR

DOG

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

Would you like a little extra income? Roz Bourne phone: 01372 453047 | 07969 196 227 email :kt@waggingtailsuk.co.uk www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/kt/carer-enquiry

Business Grade Support for Home and Small Businesses users

For several years we have been providing a very effective support solution tailored specifically for the home and small business users. In short we provide the Industry leading Internet security software (Webroot), automatic data backup to our secure cloud, unlimited telephone and remote fault resolution, free workshop engineering labour, and assistance on “how can I do this” on most main stream applications for PC’s, Laptops and Apple Mac computers and notebooks. We call this solution Total Care, as that is what it does - provide Total Care. For an annual cost of £150.00 including VAT, we look after all your IT needs (for one device). I have listed some Typical issues we have dealt with recently: o During the last month we have saved a business user who had their laptop stolen, we were able to get them back and operational in a day, having restored all their user data from our cloud, we changed all their passwords ensuring the old laptop couldn’t be accessed o We have cleansed countless machines- usually where software has accidently been down loaded o We have given hundreds of machines Health-checks to ensure they are running as quickly and as efficiently as possible o We have upgraded many machines with Solid State Hard drives, for a significant performance boost o Passwords have proven to be a major problem for many customers and we have recovered many accounts where the password was unknown or had become locked out or inactive o Our engineers have ensured that customers machines are working efficiently and have not been compromised following a range of scam calls from “Microsoft” and/or “BT/Talktalk” o Wireless networking problems have been resolved remotely when the printer can no longer be accessed o Windows 10 has been upgraded on some machines where previously Windows 7 was installed to overcome the forthcoming issue of Windows 7 going “End of Life” next year Whilst most of our issues are dealt with via remote connection or over the phone taking less than 10 minutes to resolve, we also have issues which take much longer, maybe where all the software is corrupted and needs to be rebuilt, this can take hours for our engineers to complete, but you are not charged any extra for the time we spend. We have no limit on how many times you can call us, although some customers do adopt a sheepish “err…hello it’s me again” attitude as they feel slightly embarrassed about the number of calls they make! By having Total Care, we also offer a best endeavour’s tablet and smart phone resolution service and assistance - Free. This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989. 26 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

A BOOST FOR BEES, BUGS & BUTTERFLIES ON NORTH DOWNS Surrey Wildlife Trust launches appeal to fund new project for pollinators

BumbleBee by Jon Hawkins

BumbleBee by Jon Hawkins

Despite its beautiful landscapes, Surrey has one of the fastest declining wildlife populations in England with a third of its species now either extinct or in danger. In addition, since 1945 the UK has lost more than 80 per cent of its chalk grassland, which is why it is so important to preserve this important habitat in Surrey. Andrew Jamieson, Project Development Manager at Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: “Chalk grassland habitat, like the North Downs, supports so many species it is sometimes called Europe’s tropical rainforest. So we are taking decisive action to reconnect and revitalise this stretch of countryside so bees, bugs & butterflies can breed & prosper. Our aim is also to work with local communities so that gardens, open spaces & school grounds support more wildflowers & pollinators.” Every £1 donated to the appeal could unlock £10 in match-funding. For example, £50 donation could generate £500, which could help equip a volunteer group with tools for removing invasive scrub, run a 30 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

bee themed school grounds project or recruit & train a group of volunteers to survey pollinating insects. Since 1900, the UK has lost 13 of the 270 species of bees in the UK. There is only one honey bee species, but the UK has 24 bumble bees, most of which have been recorded in Surrey – although these have declined steeply in the past 25 years & some species are now locally extinct. There are also 224 species of solitary bees which come in many colours, shapes and sizes. Surrey also has around 40 resident or regular migrant species of butterfly & many important longer distance pollinators – particularly of wildflowers. In recent years Britain’s smallest butterfly, the Small Blue, has been restricted to isolated patches of chalk grassland in Surrey where Kidney Vetch, the sole food plant for its caterpillar, is found. All of these species need our help here in Surrey. To make a donation to the Surrey Wildlife Trust Bees, Bugs and Butterflies appeal visit surreywildlifetrust.org/donate

THE MAMMA MIA! EXPERIENCE HITS ASHTEAD You are invited to a charity event with a difference!

34 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

Photos by: Andy Carter

23 July 2019... An Ashtead church is being transformed into the stunning Greek island of Kalokairi for a family community event like no other. Bringing together local talent - actors, singers and dancers - Saturday 5 October is going to be a night to remember. So, stock up the popcorn and get ready to meet Ashtead’s very own Donna, Sophie, Sam, Harry and Bill as the film comes to life before your eyes! Hosted at St George’s church on Barnett Wood Lane, this screening of Mamma Mia! will also transform the whole church to capture scenes from the film, as guests are invited to soak up the holiday atmosphere ahead of watching the film, and enjoy live acting of particular scenes throughout. As well as delicious Greek meze food, guests can learn the dance moves for Dancing Queen - taught by exStrictly pro, Hanna Haarala - plus enjoy live music with a 70’s vibe from local band Junction 9 and Ashtead’s singing group, Glee Club, who will smash a selection of famous Abba hits. Ashtead resident Hannah Underwood has designed the event to raise funds for Leatherhead-based charity Happy Child International, which has been working with vulnerable children in Brazil for 25 years. Hannah says: “This is the third cinema experience we have hosted and we are looking forward to a really

fun and successful night for local families. My aim has always been to bring the community together in a fun, creative way, to celebrate local talent and make the most of the opportunity to raise some ‘money, money, money’ for a great charity. “We hope those with tickets will dress for the occasion and put on their dancing shoes for a night as fun as the stage show and film itself.” To join in the spirit of the evening, guests can dress in beachwear or party clothing for their special place as guests of Sophie and Sky for the wedding of the year! Jennie Sullivan from Happy Child commented: “We are delighted to have the local community supporting us and the opportunity to raise awareness of our work in Brazil.”

The Mamma Mia! Experience runs from 6.45pm on Saturday 5 October at St George’s Christian Centre. Tickets cost: £17.50 adults and £10 children (limited places) aged 14-17 years. Food included in ticket, bring your own drinks. All profit will go to Happy Child International. Tickets are available from reception of St George’s Christian Centre or by emailing mammamiasecretcinema@gmail.com. We hope you can join us to have the time of your life dot, dot dot!

ASHTEAD OVER 60’s LUNCH CLUB

HELP NEEDED Ashtead’s ‘Over 60’s Lunch Club’ meets every Thursday in the Ralli Room of Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall (except in August). Members are served a 2 course, traditional meal followed by a cup of tea. Doors open at 11am for pre-lunch tea and coffee and the meals are served at 12.30. There are 5 cooking teams each of 5/6 volunteer cooks & they produce meals on the same Thursday each month. We need new teams for the first & the fourth Thursday of each month as from September. At the moment, steak & kidney pie is offered on the first Thursday & cottage pie on the fourth, both with a seasonal pudding. The choice of food is very much up to the team but we aim to offer the type of meals that those living on their own are not likely to tackle e.g. like the meals above or roast pork which the third team offer. If you feel that you could help us or if you would like to come along to a session to see what happens then do please email or phone Di for further details: Tel: 01372 279501 or email: di@clivestirling.com

SEPTEMBER BOOK REVIEWS Frolicksome Women & Troublesome Wives by Barb Drummond (non-fiction) This is a very entertaining non-fiction novel about the true-to-life wife selling that occurred in England. Drummond will make you laugh as well as feel completely appalled and insulted by such a breach of human rights. Her work is an extremely insightful representation of something that was common place in society, yet not well reported in newspapers of that time. This book is not for ‘man-hating feminists’, but clearly covers very difficult feminist issues, which are sadly still mimicked today in many of the political events across civilised communities. A fantastic read for anyone who enjoys a factual novel that challenges our views of society. The Quiet American by Graham Greene (fiction) This novel was first published in 1955 but continues to be an enjoyable read with themes that hold their relevance today. The story is narrated in the first person by journalist Thomas Fowler. Set in Vietnam, Greene tells the story of the breakdown of French colonialism and the early involvement of America in the Vietnamese War. This is a terribly sad and dark tale of a love triangle between three people, which could be viewed comparatively, to a love triangle between three Countries. Despite the intensity of the subject, Greene delivers some very humorous and witty lines. The novel can be summed up as having the optimism of the Americans, but the pessimism of the English. For those who have only encountered Greene through this book, we would suggest ‘Can we borrow your husband’, a collection of short stories that has readers laughing out loud on the Underground. The Many Lives of Adam Capello by M W Taylor (fiction) A very well written book that offers ‘food for thought’ in every chapter. Taylor has a wonderful ability to create a fictional reality that is completely believable. The story is based around the idea that we all have past lives and that the memories of those past lives can be accessed, the concept of this experience is normalised in modern society. We follow Adam Capello as he goes through a process of remembering the many lives he has experienced, the difficulties this presents for him, and his development and emotional growth. This is a thoroughly enjoyable drama about human responses and abilities to cope in challenging circumstances, a modest story that is free from ostentation. www.bookpotato.org / 01372 879362 / Unit 25, The Swan Centre, High Street, Leatherhead, KT22 8AH

W.I. MEETINGS

MOLE VALLEY W.I. JULY MEETING REPORT Our meeting was opened by Carol Murray, our Vice President. Carol and Sue Crawford then read a report from Fay McGregor, who was our delegate at the NFWI annual conference. Leatherhead Community Centre had requested more volunteers to help with refreshments for the ‘Ride London’ event on the 4th August. This proved to be a fun but busy day. Sue then gave details of how members could get involved in the 2019 resolution campaigns ‘Don’t Fear the Smear’ and ‘A call against the decline in local bus services ‘. We had a few outings to look forward to in the coming weeks including a Garden Party on 24th

July. A theatre trip has been planned to see ‘ 9 to 5 The Musical’ as well as a ‘Vintage Essex’ trip on 2nd October. We then welcomed Steve Roberts to the meeting for an interesting and informative talk on Scams & Fraud. He was a police officer for 30 years so had extensive knowledge of his subject on how to keep ourselves safe from scams on line, phone and in person. His mantra was ‘stop, think and check’. Good advice for us all. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45 pm. Further details are on our website www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk From Patricia Teasdale

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. JULY REPORT A return visit from Royal History Teacher Colin Parrish was slick and very informative, and told us of Queen Caroline, Wife of George IV. On a July trip to the Weald and Downland museum we were delighted to photograph Whittaker Cottages, formerly at Ashtead by the railway, and now resited and with authentic country garden in this Sussex venue. Close by stands the nearly completed but once derelict Eastwick Park Dairy and Scalding House, which originally stood close to Eastwick Park, Great Bookham, at 1 Eastwick Drive. New speaker auditions at Godstone tempted four of us

to spend the day. There were a good selection of interesting presentations, ending with an outstanding violinist. Three popular garden safari’s now under our belts, a chatty and enjoyable Pub lunch at the Bell, three sessions of yoga, and knit and natter brought us up to the holiday month of August. We resume our September meeting on the 4th when we welcome back Victoria Helstrip, this time to speak about India. We meet at 7.30 pm in the large Fetcham Village Hall, The St, Fetcham, Leatherhead KT22 9QS. Visitors are most welcome. MAUREEN WEBB

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead My year with Zoe or Owning an Electric Car A year ago, I wrote here about buying an EV (electric vehicle) - a Renault Zoe. Now I’ve driven it for a year I can tell you about using one, so here goes. It’s about electric only vehicles, not hybrids. Climate Impact I bought an EV to reduce the climate impact of travel. The carbon intensity - the CO2 emissions per KWh - of UK electricity production now has almost halved since 2010 (info from Defra). This means that the climate impact of driving an EV is now perhaps a quarter of that for a newish PV (petrol car). But the CO2 cost of building an EV is 60% more than for a similar PV (source Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership). So, roughly, buying an EV and driving it 100,000 miles creates 15 tonnes CO2, (9 in manufacture and 6 in use), while for a PV it’s about 25 tonnes, (5 in manufacture and 20 in use.) Driving. Driving the car is easy and enjoyable, and feels different from a PV in that: - there are no gears, so it’s more comfortable at low speeds and easier to observe low speed limits. - when you take your foot off the accelerator, the dynamo cuts in and you start generating electricity, which feels a bit like braking. And you notice the hills! Driving from Headley down to Ashtead the batteries end up fuller than at the top. There is a big difference in fuel consumption and range between summer and winter. The advertised range of the Zoe was 250 miles in summer with perfect driving. In practice I get about 230 miles in the hottest weather and 120 -140 in the coldest. Maintenance costs are very low because it’s simpler than a PV. Long Journeys and charging away from home. This needs careful planning – and I haven’t yet done it. Friends have just been on a leisurely 3000mile 2-month tour of Britain in a slightly older Zoe, and this section is entirely thanks to them. There are 3 charging speeds - slow, fast or ultra-fast, so a full charge for the Zoe can take anything between 1 and 6 hours. They recharged at pubs, hotels, car parks, supermarkets, community colleges and ferry ports. Charging the car gave them natural journey breaks which they used for snacks or meals, and visiting museums, art galleries or libraries. To plan charging stops, they used ZapMap, a website which shows all the chargers in the UK, which connector type(s) they provide (there are 3 or 4 in common use), their speed, whether they are in working order, whether they are in use now and which company provides them. In Scotland, all chargers are provided by Charge Scotland - it’s £1 to set up an account, and the electricity is free. In England and Wales there are ten or more companies and a full charge can cost around £3.50. For some you need an app, for others a company card. My first year with my Zoe has been trouble-free and enjoyable. And, although I still use the train for many journeys, it’s great to be able to reduce the carbon footprint of my car travel. LEATHERHEAD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION UPDATE After the incredible sporting weekend of 14 and 15 July it is maybe time to lower blood pressure levels, and what better way to do it than to plan to come to some of the events organised by the LCA over the next three months. September and October can be very good months for walking and Peter Humphreys has been arranging routes through countryside, riverside and parkland. They are designed to be easy paced, without steep gradients and they take place each month, the shorter ones on the first Wednesday of the month and the longer ones on the second. His first ‘shorter’ walk goes to Capel and the second to Sheepleas. His first ‘longer’ walk is at Peaslake and the second at Compton, and all the walks have pubs or cafes near at hand! Please phone Peter for full details - 01372 378347. There will be walks in October, November and December but not January. Liz Meikle has arranged her Autumn series of Art/ History lectures on each Wednesday in October, except the 23rd, and the 6th and 13th November. Lecturers are Rosalind White on Contemporary British Sculpture, and Kadinsky; Jessica Saraga on ‘Classical Composure or Radical Ravings, and William Blake; Paul Pickering on ‘Angels in Art’; and Gail Cunningham on Styles of the 60’s. The lectures are open to all, £7.50 per lecture. Further details are on the LCA website Gwen Hoad is again presenting her recorded music afternoons at 2pm on the third Wednesday of each month starting, appropriately enough, with Colours

of Autumn by Pam Barton. A cup of tea is included in the admission, £2 for members and £3 for nonmembers. The visits planned by Rosanna are for a London Walk in September, a visit to Chichester in October and exploring the new buildings at Wisley in November. As a ‘carrot’, Rosanna has obtained a number of tickets for the Tutankhamun exhibition in February - watch this space! David Hanson has tickets for two concerts at the Festival Hall which are ‘Mendelssohn and Mozart’ on 20 October, and the popular ‘Grand Christmas Classic’ on 15th December. Please call in at the Institute for all the details and to pick up an application form, or go to our website. Don’t delay as these are very popular concerts and tickets are limited. Don’t forget that all the usual regular ‘Tea and Talks’, Scrabble, Social Bridge, Book Clubs and Table Tennis and Snooker will be starting again in September. For full details of all these events and to find out what else is available at the Institute, such as the hiring of rooms for meetings, or courses during the Autumn. Please call in, it is the last building at the top of the High Street, where you can pick up the latest newsletter. Or visit our website www.leatherheadca.org.uk. Trudy, the Administrator is in the office from 9am - 12pm everyday and is always happy to answer any questions on 01372 360 508. FROM FRANCES PRESLEY

HOME & GARDEN

Adventures with mud By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham gives an update on her own experience of garden transformation. Since the loss of our mature weeping willow, the garden has been redesigned and the new Garden built during the winter. I’ve been making slow progress with the planting since clients gardens have inevitably taken priority and spring is one of the very busiest times of year for a garden designer. The planting has gradually taken shape and just last week the planting was completed. The outdoor bath has been a great success and even in the colder evenings of spring it was like a warm cocoon and the views of the garden and the sky have been really enjoyable. In the hotter evenings, a cooler bath has been just right. Something I believe in really strongly is the importance of connecting with nature and being immersed in the garden and as far as this idea goes it certainly ticks those boxes. Positioned under the flowering cherry tree, so that the views up through the white blossom were particularly special in April. The bath can be enjoyed in all weathers; a cool breeze when you’ve been in a hot bath is perhaps a less extreme take on the Swedish idea of a sauna followed by snow? It’s a new idea so might not appeal to everyone. The oval lawn is already successful and it has been a real treat to enjoy thick green grass of the newly laid turf. I am sure daisies and selfheal will soon be back and they will be most welcome, but in the meantime the mower is certainly earning its keep. I’ve been 66 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

experimenting with colours and have used reds and burnt oranges yellows and mauves and even a claret red. Some of the old planting has been preserved as this area was adapted rather than newly designed, so there is already a sense of maturity in much of this upper level of the garden. The main terrace is adjacent to the lawn and faces south west to make the most of the afternoon sun. A couple of new steps lead from the grey sandstone set path down to the curved gravel path which takes you to a seating area. Hidden in a small copse of silvery willow (salix exigua) is a small terrace that can be used for morning coffee in the sun or as a shady afternoon hideaway. The barefoot path is the newest part of the garden. Here a textured path with sand gravel and rocks provides a barefoot experience, with a river of planting alongside which is inspired by the flow of a river. Blues, greys and soft tactile grasses make the ripples of the ‘river’. The idea is that it will be a

sensory experience of full emersion in nature. The flowers are all chosen for bees and butterflies too and this area ajoins the existing pond so will be a haven for people and wildlife. At the moment it does look newly planted, so I’ll add photos to instagram and facebook as the planting develops. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons. co.uk and her facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

HOME WANTED! Socks

Socks is a handsome Ginger/White 5 year old, neutered boy who sadly has had to come into care. He was being beaten up by the cat next door to where he lived so he took it upon himself to move to a very large Garden Centre in the country. Obviously this situation could not go on so he had to leave his wide open spaces and come to Cats Protection in order to be cared for properly and to find a new home. Socks is a very friendly and sociable cat who loves his food, and he would love nothing more than to be 'out and about’ again. He would love a large, safe garden and a family that have experience of owning a cat. If you feel you could give this lovely handsome boy his forever home please call Sue on 020 8390 3165. Over Coffee today my reflections have been on Love and fear, two completely opposite realms that are at war with each other. If you’re a leader in business, education, politics or any sector you will know the power of words and how you can come from a position of fear or love. What we are seeing here at All Saints is that love is the harder option but the most transformative. Love isn’t soft, it isn’t lovely, it’s a constant choice, it’s sacrificial and is victory weapon in this world at war. So this is what happens when you stop to have

a coffee at All Saints, It’s good to put the technology aside and reflect every now and then, we hope you’ll join us soon. As many readers know, All Saints Coffee shop is a social action project, there to provide young people with employment but also to serve the residents of Leatherhead and Ashtead with the finest organic coffee in Surrey, let alone the cake Martin - All Saints Manager All Saints Church, Kingston Rd, Leatherhead KT22 7BT

As summer leads into autumn we can look forward to the beautiful display of autumnal tints heralding the start of a new and exciting programme of events and lectures beginning on 17 September with the fascinating restoration of Windsor Castle after the devastating fire in 1992. By the time you read this article we will have also returned from a six-day guided tour of Vienna, (1-6 Sept) visiting various famous landmarks, to learn more do please go to our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk then select the ‘Visits and Tours’ tab. We are always offering a warm welcome to new members, with tea, coffee and biscuits, at our monthly meetings (usually held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month) at the Peace Memorial Hall. Doors open at 09.30 for the lecture at 10.30. There is a small charge of £5 for non-members, but first-timers may attend free as a guest. Ashtead is a thriving community and our Society is a great way of meeting new people locally, so why not come along. Our third visit of the year at the end of July was at two locations: firstly, we visited The Musical Museum at Kew before travelling to Syon House (see photo). It was a full but very enjoyable day for all. Our next full day visit will be to the D Day Museum at Portsmouth on 24th September. The story of D Day is told through the memories and artefacts of people who were part of this momentous event.

Britain is home to four snakes: Adder, Grass Snake, Barred Grass Snake and the endangered Smooth Snake. Our island is also home to three lizards: Common Lizard, Sand lizard and a legless lizard that looks like a snake, confusingly named a Slow Worm. Grasslands, meadows and heathlands are a favourite of reptiles. Grass snakes are also accomplished aquatic hunters and will often hang around ponds feeding on Frogs, Newts and even Fish. Most reptiles love Compost heaps both to live and Grass Snakes will often lay their eggs in them. Only the Smooth Snake and Sand lizard require specialist heathland habitats to survive. So get that compost heap going. Not only will you be getting free compost, you will also be creating a habitat for a range of reptiles and a nursery for those little snakelets! Reptiles prefer to live away from people. They are very sensitive to vibrations in the ground and humans are very heavy footed. Reptiles are cold blooded and need to bask in the sun to warm up and be active. This gives us our best chance of seeing these beautiful and misunderstood creatures. Place down small sections of corrugated iron for reptiles to bask in and tread carefully and you may see some of our beautiful reptilian neighbours.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Retrospective Exhibition Of The Work Of Leatherhead Artist Anthony Hill The works of Anthony H i l l , the local artist who devoted his retirement Anthony Hill with his depiction of the church fire. and talent to raising funds for local causes, are currently being celebrated in the first major exhibition at Leatherhead Museum since its refurbishment earlier this year. Anthony, who died in 1997, and his wife Helena held regular exhibitions of his paintings which were very popular in the local community. Many people have lent their paintings to the Museum for the exhibition. Based at the 17th century Hampton Cottage in Church Street, the exhibition opened on Saturday, 20 July and runs until the end of Heritage Week on 22 September. As an architect, Anthony had an eye for the beauty of buildings. Many of his paintings feature them in all sizes from his garden shed upwards! He preferred the small and vernacular to grand buildings and also painted many landscapes. His line drawings feature familiar local landmarks including Leatherhead Parish Church, Line drawing of Hampton Cottage Sweech House on Gravel Hill, the White House in Church Road, and of course H a m p t o n Cottage itself. As well as his architectural career, Anthony’s life included war service in the Royal Navy and 17 years as 78 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

an Anglican priest. The exhibition includes examples of his maritime work as well as both urban and rural settings from different parts of the country. He was churchwarden in Leatherhead in 1989, at the time of the fire which nearly destroyed the parish church. He was among the first people on the scene and one of the HMS Malaya in 1943. paintings in this exhibition shows the fire as he first saw it in the north transept. It has pride of place in the church vestry. His architectural expertise was invaluable in the subsequent repair and restoration. Watercolour of Leatherhead Bridge

Leatherhead Museum is run entirely by L&DLHS volunteers and is open free of charge to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. For Heritage Week it is also open on Sunday 22 September from 10am to 4pm. For more information email museum@leatherheadhistory.org or go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

LOCAL AUTHOR DELVES INTO SURREY’S MILITARY HISTORY

Since moving to Surrey in 2006, Paul Le Messurier has developed a keen interest in the local and military history of the surrounding area and the county of Surrey. After a career in business, he has now turned his attention to research and writing and has produced several articles on local history including a series on the Home Front during World War 2. Located immediately to the south of London, between the capital and the English Channel, Surrey has long played a significant part in the defence of the nation. During the Civil War, Surrey was firmly on the side of the Parliamentarians. From their base in Farnham Castle, they controlled the vital Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, near Guildford. The threat to the country during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars led to the construction of a line of semaphore signalling stations through Surrey to provide a fast communication link between London and Portsmouth. The line was replaced in 1822 by semaphore towers, some still existing today. In the late 19th century a 72-mile ring of fortified positions was established from Guildford through Surrey towards Kent and Essex, known as the London Defence Positions. In World War 1 The Queen's Royal West Surrey and the East Surrey Regiment lost over 13,000 men between them. On the first day of the battle of the 80 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

Somme troops from the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment were waiting for the signal to go over the top. To encourage his men, Captain W.P. ‘Billie’ Nevill provided them with footballs which they kicked as they made their way across no-man’s land. Captain Nevill was killed but his men went on to capture the enemy trenches. During World War 2 Surrey was home to several RAF fighter squadrons. Due to its proximity to London, Surrey residents were to suffer at the hands of the German Luftwaffe during the blitz. Parts of Surrey, together with Kent and Sussex, became known as ‘Bomb Alley’, with Croydon suffering more damage than any other district during Hitler’s flying bomb campaign. “Surrey’s Military History” is a fascinating window into Surrey’s military history. It gives a terrific insight into the events, people and places that are Surrey’s Military Heritage. A thoroughly good read. £14.99, www.amberley-books.com

ERITAGE OPEN DAYS IN MOLE VALLEY Heritage Open Days is a national celebration of local history, architecture and places. It is now the largest voluntary heritage event in England. Communities up and down the country organise a range of events to celebrate those characteristics that make their cities, towns and villages special and unique. All events are free and take place between 13th and 22nd September. In Mole Valley a booklet of over seventy events is now available from local libraries, National Trust properties, Dorking Halls and Leatherhead Institute for example. This is a special year for Heritage Open Days as it celebrates its 25th birthday. Back in 1994 Leatherhead took part in an embryonic event to test interest in the idea. 25 years later and Heritage Open Days has come of age. Last year, across England, 5,517 events attracted 3.1 million visitors. 49,000 volunteers were involved and an estimated £20 million was added to local economies. At the launch of the 25th Heritage Open Days in June, Hilary McGrady, Director General of the National Trust, said: ‘Over the last 25 years, Heritage Open Days has inspired millions of people to connect with amazing historic places on their doorstep’. Here in Mole Valley businesses, voluntary 82 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

organisations and societies, chartable bodies, local historians, Mole Valley District Council, the Arts Society, local museums, The National Trust and Mole Valley District Council work together to produce an extensive programme. Heritage Open Days provides local communities with an opportunity to showcase the knowledge and enthusiasm of people for their particular building, area of local history or their love of the unusual and quirky. Even after 25 years there are stories that have yet to be told and places that have yet to be visited. On this, the 25th anniversary, for the first time events are spread over 10 days, to give visitors an even better chance to visit more places. So, what is on offer during those 10 days? Appropriately, the national theme is People Power, celebrating the power of local people and communities to bring about positive change. Nowhere is this better demonstrated in Mole Valley that in the rescue and restoration of the wonderful, little Providence Chapel right in the south east corner of Mole Valley and open during Heritage Open Days. Across the Mole Valley hundreds of people are responsible for looking after historic buildings or open spaces of cultural or historic significance. These can vary from churches to caves, windmills to museums and barns to country houses.

People Power is also about the individuals of power and influence: people such as Lord Beaverbrook of Cherkley Court and Thomas Hope of Deepdene. There are opportunities to learn more about both these significant figures. From the 17th Century the Pilgrim Fathers are representative of another grassroots movement started by those who sought a new life of religious freedom in America. 400 years ago they sailed on the Mayflower and their story is told through the members of the Mullins family who sailed on that voyage and whose house still stands in West Street. The triumphs and tragedy of this family and their legacy, which is still celebrated in the USA today, is told through a children’s trail and guided walk. A special commemorative art installation will be placed in West Street in recognition of the link between Dorking and the early Pilgrim Fathers. This year a number of events celebrate the power of maps to tell the story of change. Mole Valley on the Map is another theme that allows visitors to understand the changes that have occurred to their towns, villages and countryside through the medium of maps. Another way of looking at it is to acknowledge the people, places and events that

have raised the profile of the District and made us different, newsworthy or even nationally important. This year’s launch event looks at maps as art works. A talk by Caroline Walker considers the life and work of architect and graphic designer, MacDonald Gill, known for his pictorial maps including those of the London Underground. The Charles Close Society for the study of Ordnance Survey maps visits Great Bookham to provide a fascinating insight into the development of maps. Heritage Open Days this year could not pass without a mention of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Leatherhead Theatre, former known as the Thorndike Theatre. The exact date when the theatre was opened falls during Heritage Open Days. Two celebratory talks at the theatre highlight the importance of the theatre and its place in modern theatre design, followed by an exploration of the life of the remarkable and wonderful Dame Sibyl Thorndike. Whatever age you may be and wherever you live in Mole Valley, there is something to capture your imagination during Heritage Open Days in fun and engaging ways. Visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk or pick up a programme booklet to find out more. ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

Crime Reduction NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

September brings changes for many of us. Returning to work after a much needed holiday, going back to work or school; or even starting at a new school or college for the first time. This can be a very stressful time, when normal routines are disrupted and new routines have to be established. What has any of this got to do with crime reduction? It’s a fair question. The point is that it’s very easy to get caught up in all these changes and to forget the simple precautions that you would normally take to safeguard your possessions and property. It’s easy to forget to secure windows and doors when leaving the house in a hurry. Remembering to lock your car when it is parked and taking all items of value with you! All of these are things that you have probably got into the habit of doing automatically but it is easy to be distracted when there are so many other things on your mind at the time. It only takes a simple lapse to give a perfect opportunity for someone to take advantage and to gain entry to your home or your vehicle and to make off with things that are really important to you. During the summer months, many of us will have been gardening on a regular basis. Sometimes, it was tempting to leave equipment, such as mowers and garden tools out, rather than locking them away. We always receive a significant increase in reported thefts of quite valuable garden equipment over the sumer months, often from their being left out or being put away in insecure sheds. This remains a problem at this time of year. It’s also worth noting 86 ASHTEAD&LEATHERHEADLocal - SEPTEMBER 2019

that would-be burglars will often make use of your tools, ladders etc to gain entry to your home. Many of you will also be doing last minute shopping before returning to work or school. Please keep your purses and wallets safe when you are out and about. It is easy to be distracted and it only takes seconds for an “expert” to deprive you of your cash, credit cards, driving licence and, if they are all together in a bag, your car keys and other personal possessions. Think of the inconvenience and unfortunate consequences of this happening to you! Always keep your handbag, purse or wallet close to you and never leave your bags unattended when you are out shopping. Also, be aware of who is around you when you are using cash points outside banks and ATMs. Quite a few people are tricked into being distracted by someone when withdrawing cash. Sometimes, you will have been seen entering your security code and then the card is taken while you are distracted and it can then be used to withdraw cash or pay for items using your account. Always make sure that no one is watching when you are entering your PIN code and do not respond to anyone approaching you while you are doing this. If they are genuine, then they will be happy to wait a few seconds while you complete your transaction. None of this advice is meant to cause anyone undue concern. It is just a reminder to do everything possible to avoid the additional stress of having to deal with a theft or burglary, when there is plenty already going on in your lives to keep you busy.
