I hope you enjoyed a great break over the festive period and that your new year has started well. For me, it’s not been so great! I’ve had a nasty spell of flu which knocked me for six and I’m only now, starting to get back on my feet. I hope you have managed to avoid the inevitable New Year germs! On a positive note, isn’t is great to gradually see the lighter evenings returning? Our days will soon feel so much longer with Spring just around the corner. Our February magazine brings a selection of interesting information for you, including a little competition to win a great CD! New artist Alice Merton has a great voice, I’m sure you’ll enjoy listening to her debut album! Good Luck! You may remember that previously we have included articles about a locally based, international education development charity called Aprender. We are delighted to include an update on the work of Phil Hawkins and Rachael Underwood, we hope you enjoy this inspirational article about a recent trip they took to Brazil! Fabulous work you guys. We also have news from MVDC about their spring public forum on Transform Leatherhead, as well as an up-date on the Swan Centre Car Park renovations! We recently received an invitation to join the judging panel at Denbies Wine Estate for their annual Art Competition, what an honour! Michelle enjoyed her visit and was very impressed by the high quality of entries. See how she got on inside. With spring just around the corner, it’s a perfect time to year to plan your garden for 2019! See our great feature from RHS Wisley and get your veg rotating! Also worth a look this month, we have inclusions from the Leatherhead Bridge Club, Leatherhead Rotary, Fetcham U3A, Ashtead Peace Memorial, Leatherhead Museum, 4 local WI groups, & Transition Ashtead to name but a few! Wishing you all a great month and maybe even a little romance around the 14th ! Until next time…. Adios Amigos!

TUDOR MOTORS SITE - Regrettably, the latest application by Stonegate Homes for the redevelopment of this site in the middle of the village has yet to be considered by Mole Valley’s Development Control Committee. It was expected to be heard in December, then in January, but failed to appear on the committee’s agenda. It hasn’t been clear why the consideration of the revised plans has been so delayed, but in recent months the planning department has been facing a considerable workload. We sincerely hope this project will move forward at the February planning meeting. ASH DIEBACK - By the time you are reading this, work was expected to have begun on the removal of Ash trees from alongside the pathways and bridleways of Norbury Park. The work is being organised by the Surrey Wildlife Trust in consultation with Natural England, Forestry Commission & Surrey County Council. The works will remove Ash trees within e

Kit was the President of Fetcham Residents’ Association from 2005 until last year, and served both as a district councillor and chair of Mole Valley District. She was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey, was a leading campaigner on the environment, and a board member of the South East Regional Development Agency. She also found time to found the Family Line Surrey charity, and be the Organist and Choir Conductor at Fetcham’s Church of the Holy Spirit, where her funeral took place on December 22nd. She is survived by her husband Jack, and children Joe and Kate. She will be hugely missed.

What are the implications of a successful appeal against dismissal? At TWM Solicitors, we regularly find ourselves advising both individuals and employers about appeals against dismissal. The implications of appealing are not widely known, but can have significant consequences. A string of cases in recent years have considered the effect and established some important principles. It makes a lot of sense for employees to appeal against decisions to dismiss them, after all, it promises at least the possibility that the employer will reconsider and reverse the dismissal. Appeals are also encouraged since, in some circumstances, awards for successful claims of unfair dismissal can be subject to reductions of up to 25% if a right of appeal has not been pursued. Inevitably some individuals only appeal against their dismissal to maximise the money they might recover if they successfully pursue a claim of unfair dismissal they may have no genuine desire or intention to return to their job. However, matters are not quite so simple. The Court of Appeal decision in Roberts v West Coast Trains Ltd is the leading case. This, and other subsequent cases, have developed a clear principle that when an employer decides an internal appeal against dismissal in favour of an employee, this revokes the dismissal. The effect is to erase the dismissal and the employment relationship is treated as if it had existed throughout. This applies even if the employee does not in truth wish to continue in employment. Although the cases have involved contractual appeals, it is likely that in fact the contractual status of the appeal process makes little difference. The case of Salmon v Castlebeck Care (Teesside) Ltd again concerned a contractual right of appeal, but the Employment Appeal Tribunal commented that it is implicit in any internal appeal that success will negate the dismissal regardless of whether the appeal is governed by a contract.

The implications of erasing the dismissal are significant. The employee can no longer claim unfair dismissal - there is no longer a dismissal. However, the employee may respond by resigning to pursue a claim of constructive unfair dismissal based upon the employer’s conduct, since the history of what has taken place is not erased. If so, the employee will be responsible for establishing that there has been a fundamental breach of contract that justifies resigning and treating themselves as constructively dismissed and that dismissal will then also have to be accepted as unfair by an Employment Tribunal, if the employee’s claim is to succeed. There are further interesting aspects to the case of Salmon v Castlebeck Care (Teesside) Ltd. It was decided that upholding an appeal has the effect of erasing the dismissal without the need for an express direction to reinstate. Just as significantly, this becomes effective as soon as the appeal is decided, which can mean that the dismissal is erased before the employee is even made aware. Employees and employers alike therefore need to consider very carefully how to handle appeals against dismissal. If you are thinking of submitting an appeal against a dismissal, or if you are an employer potentially dealing with an appeal, our Employment Law team have the knowledge and experience to advise you and will be very pleased to assist.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

ARA membership and subscriptions Aren’t people funny? (Can I say that nowadays, or am I guilty some sort of ‘-ism?’) We come in various shapes, sizes, and colours, and with differing politics, principles and beliefs. ARA’s dedicated Road Stewards (‘RSs’) are, of course, no different, but in very general terms one could divide them into two broad types; either ‘getting on a bit’ or relatively young, with professional careers and/or young families. These latter seldom stand still; they whiz around their area delivering Ashtead Village News (AVN) but may find it difficult to return to collect subscriptions from members who are out when they first call. The former group, by contrast, have or can make time to deliver AVNs, collect subs, and have a chat with a member about local issues, the state of the country, the weather, or whatever. It is that contact which many members value, and RSs find rewarding. Some RSs are a little uneasy about asking for, and carrying, money. Mostly, they don’t mind calling a few times at the same address, frustrating though it may be. Whichever group they are in, all RSs have one common characteristic; they are fundamental to the continuing strength of ARA membership, which, in turn, maintains the credibility and influence of the Association and the respect of local politicians at District and County level. A recent example has been finally persuading the Woodland Trust to use the ‘Derby route’ for access to the new Centenary Wood in Langley Vale and discussions are continuing about the location of the car-park and its entry/exit point. ‘Tempus fugit,’ however, and oh, how it fugits with age! Each year a few RSs decide that they can no longer continue helping, and each year ARA recruits some new Stewards. However we still have some key roads where we need RSs to maintain membership levels and continue our influence in local issues.

12 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - February 2019

Not only does time flee - times change. Cheques are now virtually extinct and fewer people have cash at home, all of which necessitates offering alternative methods of subscription payment. Are you someone who is always out when your RS calls? Is when s/he calls never a good time? Do you have hardly any cash in the house? Perhaps you wish to be a member of ARA but have recently lost your RS, or there hasn’t been one in your road for some time? If any of these applies to you, ARA hopes to make it easier for you to subscribe by providing an ‘ARA Members’ bank account. You can pay your yearly £2.50 subscription directly into the account either by using your banking app. or by setting up a Standing Order to pay the subscription annually. It will be necessary to pay this in advance, so that arrangements can be made to get your copy of AVN delivered on time. The Lloyds Bank account details are: Sort Code - 30-80-33 Account No. - 19412868. The payment reference will allow the ARA to correctly identify the payee, so please use your House No/Name and the second part of your postcode, for example ‘Thistledome 2ES.’ Standing Orders should ideally be dated 1st February, so you need to ‘get a wriggle on’ but I am sure we can manage a couple of days’ grace this time. Finally, if you think you might enjoy being a Road Steward, don’t be shy, do get in touch at membsec@ashteadresidents.org.uk or call on the ARA mobile 07877-565377. MATHS IS STILL MATHS TWO PLUS TWO IS STILL EQUAL TO FOUR

“I just can’t help Thomas with his reading! Can you believe he’s only in Year 2 and it’s too difficult for me?!” - If you heard this at the school gate you would probably be quite shocked. However, substitute the word ‘reading’ with ‘maths’ and this statement becomes much more acceptable. “Maths scares me”, “I was never good at maths”, “I’m not surprised she struggles with maths - she takes after me” - all examples of statements I’ve heard at the school gates. And my personal favourite - “Maths is so different now, why did they make it so complicated?” The truth is that maths is exactly the same as it has always been, but the way it is taught in schools today is different; different but not more complicated. Our generation learnt maths by rote. We were shown the method and told to practice it until we got it right. This is probably the reason that maths has got such as bad press with us because there wasn’t a backup plan if you didn’t get it. Today our children explore maths, they are provided with many different ways to solve problems, and the wrong answer isn’t a big red X, it is the basis for a discussion on other possibilities. Some amongst us may think that it is a ‘fluffier’ methodology, but research has shown time and time again that we all learn in different ways and therefore it makes sense that we offer up more than just one way to do something. I liken it to a journey - you start at ‘Q’ the question and you get to ‘A’ facebook twitter instagram: @themathsmum

the answer. We were told that we had to go the quickest route and use a car. Our children get the option of using whatever route they want and on whatever mode of transport takes their fancy. They might choose to go the scenic route on a scooter. It might make the journey slightly longer and seem a more complicated but ultimately, they get to the same destination and will remember the experience. The ‘new’ way maths is taught means that our children aren’t scared of maths. In fact, ask most 5 & 6 year olds and they will tell you that maths is fun. They have a much better understanding of numbers and by Year 4 will be able to do things in their heads that you or I would take to our smartphone to work out. So how do we support our children with their maths homework? Firstly, try not to force your way, on them - they might not be ready to drive yet! We need to open our minds to the alternatives, take time to understand the new methods and terminology, be prepared to take the scenic route… you never know, you might like it and begin to think that maths is fun too. Karen McGuigan, aka The Maths Mum The Maths Mum helps parents to help their children succeed in maths by providing insight and guidance on how maths is taught today to our children. Courses are run locally. Check out the website for more details www.themathsmum.co.uk

CANNELLINI BEAN SOUP with CAVOLO NERO & VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

Detox – now is the time to think of this, January is just too hard! Be aware of the ‘juicing detox’s’ - the liver needs cleansing and it must have a full spectrum of nutrition in order to do so…. hit the veg and fruit in a multi-coloured way and all will be good! I doubt I need to comment on refined sugar, dairy, caffeine, gluten and alcohol intake to give your systems a rest! This recipe is adapted from Rose Gray of the iconic River Café in London, it ticks all my boxes for February. I often add some chorizo and/or smokey bacon bits to keep the boys happy!

COOKING METHOD

INGREDIENTS 225g/8oz cannellini beans, soaked overnight in cold water 2-3 cloves garlic, chopped 3 tablespoons olive oil 6 tablespoons chopped fresh flat leaf parsley sea salt & freshly ground black pepper 20g/ ¾ oz butter 150ml/ ¼ pint chicken stock (ideally brown - made with roasted bones) 200g/7oz kale or cavolo nero, washed and finely shredded For the dressing: Extra virgin olive oil

1. Drain the soaked beans & transfer to a large saucepan. Cover with cold water, bring to the boil & simmer until tender. Drain & reserve the liquid. 2. Heat the oil in a large saucepan & cook the garlic until softened but not coloured (20mins). Add the parsley & beans & cook, stirring until the beans are well coated with the mixture. 3. Heat the butter & stock in a large pan, add the cavolo nero, cover with a lid & braise for about 8 mins. 4. Meanwhile, put three-quarters of the beans in a food processor with 250ml/8 fl oz of their liquid, & briefly pulse (you do not want a puree). Add more liquid if necessary, but it should be thick. Return to the whole beans with the cavolo nero & stock & season with salt & pepper. 5. Serve in large soup bowls, drizzled with a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil.

Computers and Bathtubs Not the most logical connection, so stick with us…. Frequently we are asked how long does a PC, Mac or tablet last for? Their reliability is very good as you will see…but what affects the devices performance is the complexities of the current software and security systems that are an integral part of the operating system on the device, also the mixture of different applications and programs a machine can accrue during its life. Additionally, a machine that was designed for the market 8 years ago would be a very different technicality and specification to a modern-day machine. Yes, the machine can be upgraded to squeeze some more life from it, but it is often a compromise, and the cost of upgrading the machine can be half the cost of a replacement device, also, you get the prospect of greater reliability, newer technology, and much improved performance with a new machine. Looking at the reliability, there is a graph called a “bathtub” graph (see below), which plots the average reliability of a computer (and most electrical items) against time. This indicates the device may have some reliability issues when it is first supplied- this is typical as the electronics may have a manufacturing issue which wasn’t detected during post manufacture testing, once this has been overcome there is a long period of uninterrupted reliability, then as the device starts to age, typically this is around 7-9 years of age, when it starts to become less reliable, where eventually this becomes a terminal issue

Reliability

Poor

Good Newer

Time

Older

Considering this, if you want a really cost-effective solution, then buying a refurbished high spec machine could end up being a worthwhile exercise as they still have a lot of reliability ahead of them, and they also will be significantly cheaper. We do have used PC’s, Apple iMac’s, Macbook’s and iPads from stock- they have all been fully refurbished and upgraded where necessary, with prices starting as low as £50.00 it could be worth considering? This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

Annual Art Competition at Denbies Wine Estate

Winner Jilly Butcher with Bridging the Gap Over the flowery dell by Janet Bryan

Memories of Grandma by Imogen Hartridge

Well, in our time we have been asked to judge vegetables, plants, dogs, hanging baskets, stalls at various village events, groups dressing to a theme, window displays etc! (thankfully never babies, way too much pressure!) So when we were asked to help judge the Denbies Annual Bacchus Art Competitionpiece of cake! Not!! Such a high standard of entries and talent left me with the difficult task of deciding the winners. Thankfully I was not alone!! Upon arrival I was shown up to the gallery where I met our fellow judges (pictured), two of whom were last years winners. Debbie Green from Bookham who won the 2018 judges vote with her beautiful painting of the Northern Lights and Grace Ellen a Surrey based artist who won the 2018 People’s Choice with her inspiring landscape painting. After introductions and a cup of coffee it was down to business. So what do I know about art? Not a lot, but I know what I like!! It was not without a little apprehension

that I went along to Denbies last month. The theme this year was “Bridging the Gap”, which could be interpreted in anyway the entrants chose. The judges spent time, separately (no collusion!!), studying the exhibits, choosing their favourites and scoring them accordingly. All the works were of an extremely high standard and with so many different styles, techniques and interpretations of the theme, this was no easy task. After a morning of deliberation we were invited to join Gill White of Denbies (and fellow judge) for lunch in the Gallery restaurant while our scoring was collated and the winners announced. It was particularly lovely to talk to our group over lunch, three of whom are regular judges for this event (Gill White, Graham Muncy & John Cawdell) and could relate their past experiences. Also, to sit with the two winners from last year and discuss the different techniques we had seen and the pros and

cons of the different mediums used. It has certainly given me a much greater appreciation of art than I had before. I love art, but as I said, I don’t know much about it, but I know what I like. Now I am even more in awe of people who produce these amazing works of art than I was before. Debbie and Grace said they had found it very interesting being the judges for a change and that it has given them a better insight into how art is viewed. It was interesting when we collated our marks with the lovely Tiana from the events team, to discover that we had mostly all selected the same pieces in our top ten. No dissent amongst the judges then!! So whatever our individual thoughts and reasons for choosing particular pieces it was a very fair result across the board. The overall winner of 2019 Bacchus Art Competition was Bookham based Jilly Butcher (pictured) with her amazing photograph of a spider

and it’s web - “Bridging the Gap”! Runners up: in second place was “Over the flowery dell” by Janet Bryan, an intricate piece in applied fabric, painted and stitched, and third place went to Imogen Hartridge “Memories of Grandma” an emotive oil painting. Well done to all the entrants. From someone who struggles to draw a stick man, your abilities will forever remain a mystery to me!! My thanks go to you, my fellow judges and Denbies for your invitation and hospitality. It was an immensely enjoyable and memorable day. If you would like to enter the Denbies Bacchus Art Competition 2020, the Theme is “On The Edge” and details of how to enter can be found on the Denbies website: www.denbies.co.uk Denbies Art Gallery is always open and worth a visit. There are art displays and exhibitions throughout the year.

Swan Centre Refurbishment Phase Two Begins

The second phase of refurbishment to the Swan Centre, Leatherhead, as part of Transform Leatherhead, will begin on January 14th. This phase will see the completion of works to make the car park more user-friendly and the replacement of the goods and passenger lifts. The car park works will include fresh signage, improvement of the ramps on Levels 5 – 6 and the installation of new parking charge machines. In addition to pay and display using cash, the new machines employ a flexible check-in, check-out system for credit, debit card and Apple pay users. Users paying by card will no longer have to predict their length of stay, within the 4 hour limit, on arrival. The car park will remain open and operational during the works and there will be Traffic Marshalls on-hand to direct users. Councillor Simon Edge, Cabinet Member for Prosperity, said: “Mole Valley District Council is undertaking these refurbishments as part of

42 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - February 2019

our Transform Leatherhead initiatives aimed at rejuvenating, expanding and transforming Leatherhead town centre. The first phase of work, completed on time in early November 2018, has been very well received. It included the creation of stylish new toilets and improvements to Levels 1-4 of the car park. “This second phase is divided into two parts, the car park works which will be completed by the end of February and the lift works which will be completed by the end of June. “This will be followed by a third phase of works which will take place from June to September 2019 and will include the reconfiguration of the stairwell, new external branded signs and the creation of a brand new retail space within the centre. All of this work is intended to act as a catalyst to help revitalise the High Street by making it easier for people to park and shop, or enjoy the restaurants, cafés and activities in Leatherhead.” Keep up to date with Swan Centre works progress at www.molevalley.gov.uk/swancentre

RHS Calls for Wartime Veg Plot Photos The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is calling on people to submit photos of their wartime vegetable gardens as it gets ready to mark 80 years since the outbreak of World War II and the Dig for Victory campaign. The charity will display advisory material and wartime propaganda that inspired people to grow more food to supplement ration-book diets at its library and gardens in the autumn and will include photos of families’ own gardens and allotments. The RHS began working with the Ministry of Agriculture on the Dig for Victory campaign at the point at which war broke out in 1939, having already begun making detailed plans in preparation for war in

1938. Advice was distributed via pamphlets, leaflets and exhibition packs that toured towns and villages across the country and included guides to cultivating

vegetables all year round, the storing of produce and making a compost heap. With wartime shortages gardeners had to show a great deal of ingenuity, creating vegetable plots in unlikely places. Employees at the Wolsey Motors in Birmingham made cloches out of scrap car windscreens for their workplace allotment. By 1943 it was estimated that around 55% of households were growing fruit and vegetables and their efforts made an important contribution to the nation’s health. Fiona Davison, Head of Libraries and Collections at the Royal Horticultural Society, said: “RHS information and advice helped get a nation growing at a time when food supplies were at an historic low. Many are likely to recall parents and relatives turning previously unloved plots into efficient and prolific green spaces. We’re asking the public to share those pictures and memories with us so we can celebrate the contribution of gardening to our wartime history.” Photos and additional information for the Dig for Victory exhibit should be sent to libraryenquirieslondon@rhs.org.uk. Dig for Victory will be on display at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon, RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex and RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire from 14th October – 17th November. The Owners of Cherkley Court, Leatherhead The owners of Cherkley Court, the mansion outside Leatherhead, featured in the Leatherhead & District Local History Society’s first lecture of 2019. Now a luxury hotel named after the second of two historical owners, Lord Beaverbrook, it may claim the most fascinating heritage of any local building. Abraham and his brother George, a Liberal MP, both believed that education provided better citizenship and Abraham implemented the principle in Leatherhead. Cherkley’s beautiful house, tropical greenhouse and grounds were often open to visitors and this continued beyond his death as his daughters followed suit. The Canadian newspaper tycoon William Maxwell Aitken (1879-1964), later Lord Beaverbrook, could hardly have been a greater contrast. He bought Cherkley in 1910 after the Dixons’ daughters moved away. Helping the local community was never again a priority although he was there for over half a century. There have been three separate owners since construction in the 1860s: the Dixons, the Aitkens and their Beaverbrook Foundation, and now the hotel company. Abraham Dixon (1815-1907), the wool manufacturer who built Cherkley Court 1866-1870, is known as one of Leatherhead’s great historical benefactors. As soon as he arrived with his family in 1871 he took an active interest in local affairs and donated large funds to the community. Years later aged 77, he masterminded and funded creation of the Letherhead Institute. A millionaire at 30, Aitken decided business opportunities were greater in Britain and, through contacts, won a seat in Parliament. Suspicions

among fellow MPs continued when he was also given a knighthood. As owner of the London Evening Standard and the Express newspaper group he built these into populist propaganda vehicles, claiming the world’s largest circulation of any paper. In both world wars he held office as a government minister, backing first David Lloyd George and later Winston Churchill but each time soon moving on. Cherkley Court had ticker tape machines with news continually arriving and banks of telephones ringing. When he was there, Beaverbrook could be found firing off memorandums, leaking gossip, and barking orders down the telephone to terrified editors. Leatherhead residents interviewed after his death consistently stress his unpopularity. Thomas Lewis (1904-1996), whose father had worked in Venthams Garage when it built horse-drawn carriages, said Cherkley had been happy under the Dixons but Beaverbrook removed flower beds and just had contractors cut grass. Half of the place was turned into offices. Leonard Rogers (1906-1988), a footman for Beaverbrook, said the tycoon only came from London at weekends to use the house to entertain well known personalities, especially actresses. The Aitkens retained Cherkley Court until the mid1990s when it was taken over by the Beaverbrook Foundation. This later opened 16 acres of formal gardens to paying visitors in 2007 but it was sold again to the firm Longshot Cherkley Court which fought a long battle with campaigners before the estate was converted into today’s hotel and golf course.

ASHTEAD W.I. JANUARY MEETING REPORT There was a warm welcome & Happy New Year wishes to us all to start our first meeting of 2019, and we were advised of the 6 Resolutions to decide which of them would go forward for more discussions, and eventually to the national AGM in June. Ashtead W.I. voted for the support of rural bus services for suburban and outlying areas. Our Christmas lunch in December was a great success, as was our Carol Singing evening in Ashtead, raising a very impressive sum for the Princess Alice Hospice. Thanks were given to all those involved, as well as, of course to the Ashtead residents who we encountered during the evening, giving generously, and the many children who joined in with the carols. Our speaker was John Negus, an extremely knowledgeable speaker and author on plants and gardening. He enthusiastically took us through a year of flowering garden plants with beautiful photos, and throwing out questions to us all, just to keep us on our toes! He was happy to answer questions, and gave a lot of advice on gardening problems - what grows where, when to cut back, etc. We learned that roses had now been developed from old and new varieties, giving perfume and disease resistance. While asking yet more questions, he happily gave out packets of seeds to those offering the right answers. Even as an extremely modest gardener, I found the evening fascinating and so enlightening. This was a colourful and optimistic evening to start our New Year. Our W.I. will be having a get-together coffee morning in February and an outing to Hatfield House is planned for the spring. Some walks and our monthly lunch have been arranged, groups will be recommencing, and we finished the evening with a rousing Auld Lang Syne. At our 6th Feb, 7.15 for 7.30 meeting the speaker will be Biff Raven Hill, on The Wartime Housewife. FROM SANDRA BROWN

Ashtead WIng is part of a new generation of WI’s. We meet on the second Monday of the month from 8pm to 10pm in Ashtead Baptist Church Hall.

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. DECEMBER REPORT Our recommended entertainers were the Anchor Ukelele Band based in Byfleet. Their funny and seasonal themed presentation encouraged lots of audience participation, with tunes and banter enjoyed by all. The main meeting followed afterwards, and included Sheila’s update on the huge success of the angels project - the grand total knitted by our ladies were 140. These have been photographed for posterity, and will be delivered to Leatherhead Parish Church in good time for Christmas. Betty’s 90th birthday was celebrated with a gift and card, and a tasty committee supper did us proud. Anne’s card and crafts sold well, and the raffle table groaned with a mix of items. Distribution of newsletter and Christmas cards were a major accomplishment thanks to Pat and Sheila. The Christmas lunch board (January 13th) was handed round and within a very short time Janice had collected 36 names of those wanting to attend. A lucky dip gift as each member departed ended a memorable December meeting. We take this opportunity of wishing you a happy and healthy new year. If you are free on the first Wednesday of the month (except August) you will find us relocated into the large Fetcham Village Hall. Each meeting starts at 7.30 pm and finishes around 9.30 pm.For more info please contact Rosemary 01372 376906 or Maureen 01372 842498. MAUREEN WEBB

MOLE VALLEY W.I. JANUARY MEETING REPORT What a busy meeting we had! All members were wished ‘Happy New Year’ by President Ann Layman and those with birthdays were sung ‘Happy Birthday’! Subscriptions were paid, volunteers were found to make cakes for our February birthday meeting, members signed up to go to the council meeting, London Safari walk and Emlyn Downs lunch all to be held in March. Our annual jumble sale takes place on Saturday 16th March at the Village hall from 2.00pm with a 50p entrance fee. Any jumble can be brought to the hall from 9.00am. Lorraine Spindler from Leatherhead Museum told us all about Leatherhead during First World

War along with slides taken of the town with its many shops and the countryside with many soldiers billeted here during this time. She said that the sound of the guns being fired at Ypres could be heard in the town and surrounding area. There was a fire station near the war memorial, Red House was an Auxiliary Hospital and there were allotments and a drill practice area in Forty Foot Road. Our next meeting, our 54th Birthday meeting, takes place on February 12th at 7.45pm at Fetcham Village Hall when Valerie Fry will entertain us. Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Making your house more energy efficient – Loft Insulation 25% of heat is lost through the roof in an uninsulated house. Insulating your loft is an effective way to reduce heat loss and your heating bills. It lasts for many years and pays for itself many times over. If the loft is easy to access and has no damp problems, it should be easy to insulate and you can do it yourself. Where the loft joists are regular, you can use rolls of mineral wool insulation. The first layer is laid between the joists, and another layer is laid across the joists up to the required depth. The aim is for 270mm of mineral wool insulation. If you plan to use the loft for storage, you will need to lay boards. Unfortunately, if you only insulate between the joists before doing this, the insulation won’t be thick enough. To get 270mm, you need to raise the level of the floor so you can fit enough mineral wool beneath the boards. You can do this by fitting timber battens across the joists, or using purpose-built plastic legs that fit on the joists and support the new floor. You need to leave a gap between the insulation and the boards to stop condensation under the boards. The mineral wool should not be compressed as this this will reduce the insulation value. Insulating the joists will keep your house warmer, but make the roof space above colder. This means pipes and water tanks are more prone to freeze, so they will need to be well insulated. If your water tank is not close to the loft hatch, ensure that there is a safe path to it. You should also insulate the hatch and draught proof its edges. An alternative way is to fit the insulation between and over the roof rafters – the sloping timbers that make up the roof itself. Rigid insulation board can be fitted between rafters, or foam insulation can be sprayed between them. Both of these approaches will normally need a professional– this is not an easy DIY job! In this case the roof space will be warmer than with standard loft insulation, so freezing tanks and pipes are less of an issue. Also, you can board the floor for storage without having to raise it. But as well as insulating the roof, you will have to insulate any walls and chimneys in the loft space. If you leave these uninsulated, then the heat can bypass your new insulation. Insulating at rafter level is considerably more expensive than most standard loft insulation at joist level. If your loft is hard to access, you can have insulation (mineral wool fibre or other approved materials) blown into awkward spaces by a professional. Flat roof insulation nearly always requires professional input as does anything where there are damp issues. You can find professional help though the National Insulation Association (NIA) https://www.nia-uk.org. For more general information on insulation and other home energy efficiency measures see -Energy Saving Trust http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk. We do need to reduce our energy use in Mole Valley homes and produce less greenhouse gases to make a contribution to achieving a reduced climate change target of 1.5oC! THE DEVIL IN DISGUISE Copyright Sarah Lott, January 2019

www.thememorybook.co.uk sarah@thememorybook.co.uk | @thememorybook | facebook/thememorybook

It was everywhere you looked. It was in everything. It was dangerous, it was evil and it had to be removed on a permanent basis. This seemed to be the message for 2019. Sugar was the devil in disguise. A chocolate devil appeared to Ruth in February. The search for a tin of tomato soup led to his discovery. Only Ruth knew that he was at the back of a corner cupboard in the kitchen. She could feel him beckoning to her, daring her to open the door and find him. He wore red, white and gold, he was shaped like Father Christmas and he was made by Lindt. He wore a tiny gold bell that rang the tune of temptation… The children had quickly snaffled their own Christmas chocolates but there was still an abundance of the stuff around the house several days later. Ruth’s new year’s resolutions were no chocolate, no processed food and a dry January. She was also going to go out ‘speed walking’ every morning. The ‘no chocolate’ resolution had initially caused her a bit of a dilemma. How was she going to prevent temptation? It seemed obvious. They had to eat every bit of chocolate in the house by the 31st of December… Ruth’s resolve was initially very strong. This was probably due to a complete and overwhelming feeling of nausea, caused by eating three boxes of chocolate in four days. The first week went brilliantly. She ‘sped walked’ round the local roads, she fed everyone healthy meals and not even a drop of alcohol passed her lips. She was beginning to feel virtuous and even bought a book on sugar free cooking. The children’s ‘Frosties’ were banned and their orange juice was rationed. The second and third week went ok. She was now speed walking every other day but felt this was a more realistic regime and she bought a fitness dvd

62 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - February 2019

to do at home. She’d started to drink white wine spritzers because they were very diluted and she just had to have a drink when Sam’s mother visited for Sunday lunch. A bottle was opened and it would have been rude not to join her mother-in-law. The mellow sensation the wine brought was just a bonus. By the end of January, Ruth was walking twice a week and only drinking at weekends. She’d tried to cook a few of the sugar free recipes but the children refused to eat them so she’d reverted to some of her tried and tested meals. Sugar free muesli and natural yoghurt had been a complete failure. Ruth’s greatest achievement was that no chocolate had passed her lips. She’d indulged in a few neglected toffees from the recesses of her car’s glove compartment but no Shops & Services chocolate at all. The sudden discovery of the bell carrying ‘tempter’ in the cupboard took Ruth to a state of turmoil. Whenever she entered the kitchen, her taste buds tingled in Pavlovian reponse. She could almost taste the velvety texture. She started to dream about the chocolate Lindt kittens she’d been given as a child by her Aunty Vera. One rainy afternoon she just couldn’t take any more. Ruth wasn’t proud of her actions that day and knew she’d regret them. The devil in the cupboard was removed and placed ceremoniously on the still cellophane wrapped fitness dvd. It was then beheaded with fervent enthusiasm and consumed with relish. Ruth would start again tomorrow. Happy New Year! I’m planning to hold some life story workshops this year for anyone who wants to write their own life story. If you’re interested, please get in touch! 32

Garden Buildings By Selina Botham

Whether you’d like a rustic potting shed, smart greenhouse or a garden office; the position as well as the size and finish of the building are all vital. Do you want plenty of space for a games room or a cozy hide out for one person to get away from it all.The hobbies and interest of our clients are as varied and interesting as they are and we’ve designed structures such as a woven shelter for a swinging day bed (pictured), a his and hers/radio and potting shed, a photographers studio, a bespoke log store, and even a rustic shack complete with green roof. We’ve also located sheds and summerhouses, pool houses and bin stores and bike sheds, all sizes of gardens. The key to success, as with anything garden design related, is to work out what you want and then to ensure that it fits with the plot and the rest of the garden. Once a building is in place you won’t want to move it so it needs to be right. If its role is as a feature/focal point then it should be carefully placed to enhance the main views or lead you through the garden If its a utility building then its

70 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - February 2019

really important to get location right so it can be screened or even tucked away out of sight. There are also planning rules which need to be followed and sometimes planning permission needs to be obtained. You’ll also need to think about how you will want to access your new garden building and how often and in what sort of weather. If you want to be inspired to sit out in your beautiful summer house in the winter on a sunny day you’ll probably want a path rather than a route across soggy grass. If however you want to lounge under a rose covered pergola, this will probably only be accessed on a sunny day, so you may be happy to walk across the lawn. If you’d like some help with designing you garden and perhaps including a garden building (or two) then do contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk. or take a look at our facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons or follow us on Instagram @designsforallseasons.

The Berlin-based, British singer songwriter Alice Merton gets ready to release her much anticipated debut album MINT, which includes the singles ’Lash Out’, ’Why So Serious’, ’Funny Business’ and the platinum selling ‘No Roots’, on 18th January 2019. After garnering much attention with the explosive self-release of her debut single 'No Roots', Alice Merton has gone on to build a strong international fanbase, reaching 250M streams and 150M YouTube views so far, with ‘No Roots’ certified Platinum in 7 countries, reaching the Top 10 single charts in 10 countries and recently going GOLD in the US. MINT stands as a testament to Alice’s autobiographical and heartfelt writing, with driving rhythms underpinning catchy choruses and themes of female empowerment and unavoidable insecurities of youth, and her sense of independence; illustrated by the fact that, as well writing and recording the album herself, Alice set up her own label with her manager to release the record, and has produced a series selfdirected music videos as part of the campaign. In the US, partnering with label Mom + Pop Records, Alice has continued to build on the success of ‘No Roots’, touring with the likes of Vance Joy and The Killers, featuring in Billboard Magazine and

performing on both Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight’s Show and James Corden's The Late Late Show, as well as receiving a nomination in the 'Best Rock' category at the Teens Choice Awards. Closer to home, Alice has played sold out tours in the UK, featured on Tom Odell's latest single 'Half As Good As You', with radio support from Annie Mac and the Matt & Molly Show on Radio One and Radio 2, as well as coverage from MTV, Nylon, 1883 Mag and others. Tour Dates 17-Mar - Bristol, Thekla 18-Mar - Leeds, The Wardrobe 19-Mar - Manchester, Manchester Academy 2 22-Mar - Glasgow, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut 24-Mar - London, Scala www.AliceMerton.com Twitter: @AliceMerton Instagram: @AliceMerton www.Youtube.com/AliceMerton

General Crime Daytime Burglaries

Over recent years, I have become increasingly aware that burglaries are taking place during daytime hours, rather than in the evenings after dark. In the past, I have tried to emphasise the importance of making your home look occupied if you are away or going to be out during the evening. I have always (and still do) recommended the use of timers to bring on lights in your house, preferably in a staggered pattern to convey and impression of occupancy and movement. Daytime burglaries, however, generally appear to be opportunistic in nature and when an insecurity can be found in the property, enabling the burglars to gain access to the ground floor of your home, preferably at the back of the house. It seems that would-be burglars actually knock on the front door or ring the bell to see if anyone is at home. If the occupant answers, they will ask for directions for somewhere local and be on their way. If there is no reply, they then look for ways to get in. It is very important, therefore, to restrict access to the back of your home. If you have a side gate, please make sure that it is bolted securely, preferably at waist height on the inside. A padlock is also a good idea. If your side gates and fencing are not very high,

it’s worth considering adding some trellis on top to deter climbing. Also, remove any climbing aids, such as wheelie bins, keeping them on the other side of the side gate except on collection days. You could also consider filling in any gaps in your perimeter security with some defensive plants, such as pyracantha, holly, berberis or hawthorn. If there is no soil in which to plant these prickly shrubs, they can be grown in large pots, weighted down at the base with two or three bricks. It is nearly always the case that, if you make it difficult for someone to gain entry they are likely to leave and try somewhere else. Obviously, the sight of a visible intruder alarm is always going to be a strong deterrent. Modern alarms are much more reliable than may have been the case years ago. Many are wireless systems and current legislation relating to noise pollution means that they have to re-set after 20 minutes of a “false trigger”. I often suggest that, if you are looking into having an alarm installed you should consider asking for some quotes from local smaller firms. To me, this makes sense as it is important for local businesses to develop and maintain a good reputation. From experience, I have also found that local companies can offer very competitive pricing.
