Snow drops, multi coloured crocuses and bright yellow daffodils are all putting in an appearance in my garden at the moment; so good to see. It’s also time to prune, so go mad with your secateurs why don’t you! We welcome you Spring! If you’re looking to get away and relax, why not consider treating yourself to a fabulous cruise? The Surrey Cruise Show is coming to Denbies on 20th March, why not pop along and find out all about what’s on offer? See page 7 for details. We are happy to include an update from Ashley Medical PPG this month and a date for your diary if you wish to attend their up-coming AGM. See this on page 28. Mole Valley District Council invited us to attend a ‘Virtual Dementia Experience’ recently. Michelle went along and was quite taken aback by her experience. What an amazing training tool this is, I hope you find her account of the visit as interesting as I did. You may remember, a few months back, we reviewed a lovely poetry book by local lady, Ana Sampson. We are happy to include another piece about her most recent work entitled ‘Ten Poems for Breakfast’. We have lots of other interesting bits and bobs for you to discover this month too, the What’s On pages are bursting with events so we hope you can find something which takes your fancy! Wishing you all a good month,

Spanish assets and Inheritance Tax At TWM Solicitors, we are often asked about the situation of expatriates who have purchased a property in Spain with a view to retiring to Spain, or who are already living in Spain but still own assets in the UK. The EU Succession Regulation (650/2012) came into force on 17 August 2015, under which Spanish successions are governed by the law of the last residence of the deceased, unless they made a Will opting for the law of their nationality (i.e. England and Wales) and this is important because it avoids the “forced heirship rules” which form part of the Spanish succession laws.

The choice of a particular Succession Law does not affect the charge to Inheritance Tax, which remains different in each country.

A British citizen could make an English or Spanish Will to cover their worldwide assets, or separate Wills for each jurisdiction.

Spanish Inheritance Tax is charged on the basis of “Tax Residency” of the beneficiary (not the deceased), which depends on having a permanent residency in Spain and spending more than 183 days per calendar year in Spain. If the beneficiary is a tax resident in Spain at the time of the deceased’s death, they would have to pay Spanish Inheritance Tax in connection with all of the assets they inherit worldwide; if they are not a tax resident in Spain at that time, then they only have to pay this in relation to the inherited assets which are based in Spain.

A Spanish Will will be valid, and admitted to Probate, in England and Wales if it was prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Spanish law at the time of its execution, as English Law regards this as being valid here. One argument for having two separate Wills is that the administration can proceed separately in each country, rather than one having to wait for the Will to be proved in the other before it can begin. When a British citizen makes a Spanish Will but already has an English Will in place, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that the Spanish Will does not inadvertently revoke the English Will; this can be avoided by showing a copy of the English Will to the lawyer preparing the Spanish Will.

In England and Wales, the deceased’s domicile would determine whether Inheritance Tax is to be paid only on the deceased’s UK assets or on their worldwide assets.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Planes, Trains and Automobiles Firstly planes. Ashtead residents will have received through their door a consultation flyer regarding changes to Heathrow Airport and new flightpaths. If approval is granted for a third runway at Heathrow, this will mean differing flightpaths to those we experience now. To alleviate noise disturbance, the use of runways will be switched around to “ensure local communities have breaks from aircraft noise.” They plan changes to the way some planes arrive into Heathrow using the existing two runways, and they will need to change flight paths for arriving and departing aircraft should the go-ahead be given for an expanded airport. The website www.heathrowconsultation.com allows you to enter your postcode to see how the changes to flight paths might affect you, and also has a link to the Consultation itself allowing you to give your views. The ARA’s web site also contains the same links. It is important that as many people as possible contribute to this consultation. By the time this magazine is distributed there will be a very short window of opportunity to complete the feedback, which closes at 11.59pm on Monday 4th March. Also on the “Planes” subject is the newly published Green Paper entitled “Aviation 2050. The future of UK Aviation.” This weighty document seeks to set out a roadmap for the air industry. Those with sleep problems can read all 200 pages by visiting https:// assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/ uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/ file/769695/aviation-2050-web.pdf. Having read though some of the document we were struck by comments on “Environmental impacts” where it acknowledges disturbance from aircraft has negative impacts on health and quality of life of people living under flightpaths. However the thrust of the whole document appears aimed at the aeroplane industry and airports, ignoring other

10 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - March 2019

“aircraft” such as helicopters. Residents of Ashtead will be all too aware of the loud, reverberating noise from relatively low flying helicopters that, during the summer especially, become the bane of everyone’s life. The ARA has written to the British Helicopter Association who responded with “We are sympathetic to people impacted by the helicopter transits but as the Minister points out there is nothing in law which takes into account noise pollution from aviation.” There are controls regarding flying height and the avoidance of controlled airspace around airports, but nothing with regard to noise. We see this Green Paper as perhaps a means of getting legal requirements in place to replace the present “advisory” code. Trains (and by implication – automobiles). Some 18 months ago Network Rail raised the topic of closing the Green Lane foot crossing resulting in an outcry from residents. EACH DAY, 221 trains use the tracks and an average of 297 pedestrian foot/cyclist crossings take place. It is a heavily used crossing. Once again, it seems Network Rail is looking at this crossing with perhaps a view to closure. The ARA maintains that it is an established Right of Way and has been for over 100 years. Surrey County Council’s definitive map shows it as a Right of Way. Despite the train traffic, it is a safer route to school than running the risk of car accidents on the school-time-congested roads of Woodfield Lane and Barnett Wood Lane. We have a statistician working to produce meaningful figures disproving Network Rail’s risk assessment and will vigorously fight any future closure proposals. Save the Dates This year’s Annual Spring Clean will take place on Saturday 6th April: full details of arrangements will be in next month’s magazine. The Association’s AGM will be at the APMH on April 24th at 7:30pm. David Baker Webmaster and Transport

TUDOR MOTORS SITE - At the fifth attempt, plans for the redevelopment of this old garage site in the centre of Fetcham were finally approved by Mole Valley councillors in early February. The new plans addressed the concerns raised in the previous failed application, in particular altering the roof to a traditional pitched profile to make it more in keeping with surrounding buildings. Fetcham Residents Association has welcomed the approval of the plans which will provide 10 twobedroom apartments with some retail space on the ground floor. Three of them will be classed as “affordable” units. While the FRA expressed concerns over aspects of the development, it supported the views of most of the village traders, and residents, who wished to see the uncertainty over the site resolved in a positive way. The FRA has also received assurances that there is likely to be pedestrian access across the parking area linking the The Street and Cobham Road. This will help pedestrians who want to avoid crossing at the e

roundabout junction – a significant benefit. FLOOD DEFENCES - There is much disappointment at a decision by the Environment Agency to rule out a flood alleviation scheme for the middle Mole. The Leatherhead and Fetcham Flood Action Group (LAFFAG) was told that a proposed flood water storage option on the field next to Raymead Way and Cannon Grove would not provide protection from both ground and river flooding. It would therefore fail to meet the criteria for funding. The problem is the presence of natural springs under the field which contribute to the flooding, although the main source of excess water after prolonged rain is the river itself. The flood action group is seeking further meetings to press its case. The springs in the field, owned by SES Water, are also thought to be the main cause of the persistent pooling of water on the footpath from Mill Lane alongside the railway. LAFFAG is urging Surrey County Council, which is responsible for the path, to examine whether raised walkways could be installed.

HOME WANTED! Teddy, Buster & Boris

Teddy, Buster and Boris came into care as their owner had been taken into hospital long term. Unfortunately it was some time before we were aware of the situation and were able to rescue them; as a result the boys have been very unwell but with lots of care and support are on the path to a full recovery. They are calm, friendly and very handsome. Teddy is older than the other two boys and whilst their relationship is unknown they are all very attached to each other. Teddy comes as part of the package and if I was an estate agent I would describe him as " viewing essential to appreciate full potential". The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles.

Music Matters

You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain Whatever you doorthisservice March, you don’t can forget on a else product get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what to thank your Mum-for everything! the going rate usually is.

Updates, Security and Protection... the importance of updating and protecting your computers Getting updates to your computer and mobile devices core operating system and programs is so important as the updates protect you against the latest threats. When applying any updates this can be a lengthy process, which your device will (usually) do for you automatically and often the device will require a restart. We have seen instances where the updates do not apply correctly for whatever reason, in one instance an Apple iMac had all its data wiped and we had to go through a costly data recovery process to recover the data. The moral to the story here is ensure you have a current backup of your data. Just last week there was a Windows update that caused the machine to lock and blue screen, the entire process to self-resolve the problem took about 2 hours to return a working machine, and involved a number of very laborious restarts. The dangers of not having your machine updated far outweigh the risks of taking the updates. Windows 7 is scheduled to go end of extended support on 14 January 2020 Windows 8 is scheduled to go end of extended support on 10 January 2023 As a general rule, Apple will keep their most current two versions of software alive and will retire anything older, using this yard stick V10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave) are the most recent versions We have also seen a significant increase in the number of hacks coming via older versions of Internet Explorer. This could be in the guise of a banner appearing on your screen saying you have been caught viewing illicit material and will be reported unless you pay a ransom. These messages are intrusive and indicate that there may be someone logging your keystrokes, meaning your security is at risk. Our advice here is to download and use an alternative internet browser- which is still updated like Google Chrome or Firefox

We are now hearing more about data breaches as they occur, all a part of last years GDPR regulations, but it estimated that 3 billion email account passwords are compromised and on the dark web, if you have had the same password since 2017, we strongly encourage you to change your password, and include upper case, lower case. numbers and punctuation symbols, as a guide this website offers you an indication of how long it will take a computer to crack your password. https://howsecureismypassword.net/ This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Ashlea Medical

Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG)

It was a big day for the AshLea Medical Practice when in September its PPG organised “A Family Health Day” in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall to celebrate both the 110th birthday of the Practice and being awarded the national “PPG of the Year 2017”. We were well supported by many local voluntary organisations and charities. Several committee members are due to “retire” this year and we are looking for new members to take our successful PPG forward in the future. It’s not an onerous role and it certainly does not require any previous medical experience. We meet about six times a year and try to represent patients’ views, experiences and ideas to the Practice and other NHS organisations. You would be welcomed by a friendly, good humoured team!

28 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - March 2019

This year we are holding our AGM on Thursday, 25th April at the Fairfield Centre, Leatherhead (next to the Swan Centre). We will be open from 7 pm for tea/coffee/cakes and a chance to meet the PPG Committee, and the meeting will start at 7.30pm. Parking is available on site. We are delighted to say that, after the formal part of the evening, we will welcome Community Police Officer Bob Apperley and Crime Reduction Officer, Neil Clarke, to be our guest speakers. We are sure this will be extremely interesting and lively presentation! All patients of Gilbert House and Linden House surgeries are welcome. If you would like further information, please email ashlea.ppg@talktalk.net or call Richard Garrard on 01372 817 190.

The Difficulty with Dementia Difficult to understand, difficult to talk about, difficult to deal with. With one in two people now likely to get cancer at some point in their life and with so much information available, we seem much more able as a society to be able to talk about it, understand treatment regimes better and be more able to support friends and family who have it. Every year 325,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. Every year 850,000 people are living with Dementia. And yet, as a society, we still seem to have difficulty truly understanding what sufferers of Dementia are experiencing and how best to support them and their carers on a day to day basis. At the end of January, Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC’s) Mole Valley Life team hosted Virtual Dementia training sessions in Leatherhead, giving staff a new and immersive insight into how they might better understand and support local residents who suffer from the diverse symptoms described as Dementia. Look Local were very privileged to go along and join them. The “Virtual Dementia Experience” took place in a specially converted “bus” which has been designed

38 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - March 2019

and medically assessed to provide the closest possible experience as to how having Dementia may feel. We were all fitted out with special aids to help replicate certain conditions that people with dementia experience. Glasses that replicated macular degeneration. Gloves that mimicked neuropathy and the lose of fine motor skills. Shoe inserts that also mimicked neuropathy and the feeling of discomfort and pins and needles that led us to “shuffle” to minimise the feeling. Head phones that “piped” conversations and other noises and replicated the lose of ability to “filter” sounds and how certain noises became magnified. It was truly alarming when a siren went off in our headphones. Several of us actually screamed out loud. Not a usual reaction for any of us. During the session the trainer tried to “feed” me with some soup. I couldn’t comprehend what he was trying to do, so when he brought the spoon up to my mouth I hit out. A completely automatic reaction, but not a “normal” reaction for me. He meant me no harm, but the “dementia” made me feel invaded, threatened and scared. I was given a shirt to button. With the lose of

my fine motor skills it was hard enough to find the buttons themselves and impossible to find the button holes. I could feel myself becoming increasingly frustrated, panicky and quite frightened. Even more so when the trainer tried to take it off me. Was he trying to help me? I didn’t think so. Again, I felt under threat, that he was angry with me for not managing to do the buttons up quickly enough or at all as it turned out. I snatched the shirt back. He took it off me again. I snatched back again and a tug of war ensued. The problems we experienced trying to carry out simple, every day tasks was quite frightening. After the session we were asked to describe our feelings; disorientated, frustrated, isolated, angry, vulnerable, aggressive, frightened, upset. Jerry the trainer from Xperience Training Ltd was amazing. He was so good during the debrief in explaining why we had been experiencing some of the things we did, how we could better help people with dementia cope with every day tasks and reduce some of the things that create difficulties for people suffering from Dementia. There is so much to learn about this subject and so much that I could impart

in this article that I just don’t feel I can do justice to here. Whether you know someone with Dementia or not, you undoubtably will at some point, or you will have contact with a Dementia sufferer whilst out shopping, or at a train station etc.. The statistics speak for themselves. So here is my plea to you. Visit http://www.molevalleylife.co.uk/ for more information on the many services and support that you can access in Mole Valley. Visit https://www.training2care.co.uk/ Just reading about what training they provide will give you an insight and tips on how to support a Dementia sufferer, and if you are a company in the care industry or one that has contact with the general public or if you just want to provide your staff with valuable life skills, do please consider arranging some training. And finally, look up PK Beville. She is the American founder of this training programme. There are lots of videos to watch surrounding this training and she gives incredible insights into understanding Dementia sufferers and literally turns the myths on their head. Let’s, between us, make a start at taking the difficulty out of Dementia.

CHICKEN RAGOUT with PORCINI and PANCETTA

This stunning recipe is written by Ursula Ferrigno, an amazing lady who I work with at the Leith’s School of Food & Wine. She is an inspirational author and teacher and her passion is even more excitable than mine! The recipe has quite a few ingredients in it, but worth every second - it will see you through ‘til the heat of the sun arrives in April. Ursula serves it with her divine home-made gnocchi and if you’d like to know more, then join me at Leith’s!

INGREDIENTS

COOKING METHOD

2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 50g unsmoked pancetta, cut into small cubes 4 skin-on, best quality, large boneless chicken thighs cut into fork friendly chunks 100g pitted green olives 3 fresh bay leaves 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tbsp tomato puree 125ml dry white wine 50g dried porcini (soaked for 10 minutes in cold water; reserve the soaking water) 100g chestnut mushrooms 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped 150ml chicken stock Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper A handful of flat-leaf parsley

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook until golden. Add the pancetta and cook for about 6 minutes.

w: WWW.BEINTHEKITCHEN.CO.UK

2. Add the chicken and fry for 10mins, then add the rest of the ingredients, except the parsley & parmesan cheese. Simmer, covered, for 30 mins. Stir occasionally, adding a little of the reserved mushroom soaking water if the mixture becomes too dry.

3. Taste the sauce, adjust the seasoning if necessary and add the parsley. It should be flavoursome and a good consistency, not too thick. If it is, add some water.

4. Pour the hot chicken sauce over cooked gnocci and serve with Parmesan cheese, if desired. e: BE@KASSAPIAN.COM

FETCH’EM FROM THE CUPBOARD IN ASHTEAD TOO!

Fetch’em from the Cupboard originally teamed up with Greenwise in Fetcham in July 2018, and together they are now bringing the best of both worlds to Ashtead Village too. Both shops give their community and surrounding areas a vital resource to enable them to reduce their plastic use and overall carbon footprint. The concept and execution are simple; reuse what you already have by bringing your own containers and buying your foods and cleaning products, plastic and packaging free. You can now buy organic grains, pasta, cereals, beans, pulses, nuts, dried fruit, seeds, toothcare, body care, cleaning products and more. The Ashtead shop will also have loose frozen foods, a

plant milk machine and a flour mill. Our self-service scale is designed to weigh your container before you fill up and then offset the weight once you have; you only pay for what is inside. If you forget your container or you are popping by in a hurry, the trusty brown paper bags can be used, however we encourage you to bring your own containers to reduce waste and use of natural resources. Help is at hand if you need it - so please just ask! We have number of talented Surrey based suppliers now, including chocolates by Artisinal Vegan (Cobham), soaps by Tahmasso (Ashtead), skincare by Puremess (Guildford), dried plant based snacks by Cut and Dried (Ockley), shaving products by Norse

(Kingston), reusable Kitchen products by Pegasus Gifts (Woking), finally coffee and tea by the experts at Cupsmith (Farnham). From the rest of the UK, we have toothcare by Georganics (West Sussex), zero waste cleaning products Fill by Ideal Manufacturing (Northampton) and grains and seeds grown in the UK by Hodmedods. We are also welcoming new suppliers - made to order bread by Plantissimo (Sutton) and reusable personal care products by Tiny Human (Capel). We are working with more local companies to bring you even more products which are home grown, high quality and value for money. By working closely with our suppliers, we ensure we are bringing you the eco-

friendliest products we can and at the lowest possible price. If you have a product you struggle to get plastic free, then challenge us to find it for you - it is likely others find it just as frustrating too! The actions of each of us, working together in our communities, will be what helps to turn the tide on plastic. BBC Young Musician to perform with Epsom Symphony Orchestra on Saturday 2nd March 2019 at The Epsom Playhouse

Epsom Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, on Saturday 2 March, will entertain with the famous Scheherazade, a solo by an award-winning young musician, as well as raising funds for The Children’s Trust new music therapy. Starting at 7.30pm at Epsom Playhouse, the concert ‘Legends of Romance’ will feature Scheherazade,

which describes the adventures of Sinbad the Sailor in glittering musical colours, as well as Tchaikovsky’s ‘Francesca da Rimini. Also, Matilda Lloyd, aged 22 years, who won BBC Young Brass Player of the year 2014, will perform the Trumpet Concerto by Artunian. The concert will also support The Children’s Trust, whose guest speaker will give details of the new music therapy offered by the charity. The Music Therapy Campaign focuses on how music can help a child with brain injury reconnect with the world around them. Music therapy, which is completely voluntary funded, can inspire a child with brain injury to walk, talk and smile again. Claire Wood, Music Therapist at The Children’s Trust, said: “It cannot be understated quite how much music can lift a person’s mood and transform a situation, but for children with a brain injury, music can have a life-changing influence. When a child has a brain injury, they often lose the ability to move and communicate, to focus, or do anything for themselves. Music can help to inspire and motivate a child with brain injury to reconnect with the world around them and relearn the skills they’ve lost.” Tickets are available from The Epsom Playhouse Box Office on Tel: 01372 742555. They cost £15 each (£13 senior citizens and students, £5 children). For more information on the local orchestra please visit www.epsomsymphony.co.uk. Book Reviews March

‘Asymmetry’ by Lisa Halliday (Paperback, £8.99) On a Manhattan park bench Alice, a young editor, is charmed by Ezra, a much older and well-known author. Their differing ages and finances begin as a playful setting for a connection which grows beyond their initial light-hearted meetings. Halliday writes their relationship from the outside; we are observers. At Heathrow, economist Amar is detained by immigration on his way to Kurdistan. Intelligent and patient, he talks us through his experience first-hand, exploring the practical and emotional delicacies of immigrant life in the US, and family visits to Baghdad. Halliday’s narrative versatility and the many other lives glimpsed in Assymetry open up a wide, rewarding and complex world.

‘In Your Defence’ by Sarah Langford (Paperback, £8.99) Sarah Langford, a bannister, skilfully demonstrates the workings and failings of the underfunded family court system. In each chapter we follow a different character, meeting people from all walks of life. Langford seamlessly weaves us through the law’s process and procedures, and the everyday rituals and routines of barristers. The gripping storylines of each individual are told with heartache and humour, high drama and quiet pain, along with her own feelings as she defends them.

Chéri’ by Colette (Paperback, £7.99) The recent film about Colette’s life is a great reminder to enjoy the delicacy of her writing. Here she explores with wit and poignancy the conflicting demands of society, self-interest and the heart. For six years Chéri, a beautiful young man, has been living a life of idle indulgence with Lea, an elegant courtesan approaching the end of her career. Parted by Chéri’s suitable marriage, the lovers blunder through denial into the realisation of the depth of their loss amidst the deliciously artful malice of society friendships.

Speaker: Inspector Ken Wharfe MVO “Guarding Princess Diana” on Tuesday 2nd April 2019 at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club

The Probus Club of Leatherhead has organized a range of Celebrity Lunches over the past few years. These Lunches have created high interest locally and have raised funds for various Charities; and we hope April will be another such triumph. Inspector Ken Wharfe will be a most interesting speaker and one whose background is with the Royal Family. This SAS trained Officer from Scotland Yard’s elite special operations was in charge of the round-the-clock security both at home and abroad for the late Princess Diana and the two Princes - William and Harry. He organised a range of itineraries for eight years. Ironically, the Princess decided she did not need the experience of Ken Wharfe and his police security team and cancelled their professional back-up - just a few weeks before her death!! The Inspector has a fund of stories - some funny - some very sad. He is an experienced enthusiastic speaker - albeit sometimes a little indiscreet - who

will be thoroughly entertaining. The Queen made a personal gift to Inspector Wharfe in recognition of his service to the Royal Family and appointed him as a Member of the Royal Victorian Order and she asked him also to organise the security of the St. Paul’s Memorial Service for Princess Diana. Funds raised at this event will go to the Lord’s Taverners Charity whose aim is to give disabled and disadvantaged youngsters a chance to participate in sport by providing specially adapted wheelchairs and minibuses. Guests, including ladies, would be made very welcome this Celebrity Lunch. Tickets will cost £40 each and early reservation will be essential. MOLE VALLEY W.I. FEBRUARY MEETING REPORT It is our birthday, 54 years old, and there are banners around the hall with the words “Happy Birthday” on them. We were greeted with a glass of red/white wine or juice which started off the evening very well. Ann Layman, our President, opened our meeting by welcoming everyone to the meeting as well as 4 visitors. She then went on to wish our WI a happy birthday as well as the members whose birthdays are in February and we sang happy birthday to them all. After a brief business we then welcomed our entertainment for the evening in the way of “Wind and Words”, Clarinet and Poetry with Chris Hooker and Valerie Fry. As it is our birthday and Valentines Day this week, they directed their entertainment to “Let There Be Love” by playing various tunes, many of which we knew, and poetry to the Romantic (or not) theme. It was a very enjoyable evening. After our romantic entertainment we then had tea/ coffee and cake and carried on with the business.

Our annual jumble sale takes place on Saturday 16 March at the village hall from 2pm. Any jumble can be taken to the hall from 9am. Our WI will be going to Calendar Girls - The Musical in Woking on 28 March, and we were given notice of 3 new outings this year - Houses of Parliament on 26 April, Hirst Castle on 4 June and Vintage Essex on 18 September, all of which sound very interesting. Throughout the year we have various activities available for members - badminton, bridge, homecraft, bookclub, rambling, knit and natter, mah-jong and scrabble. ASHTEAD W.I. FEBRUARY MEETING REPORT We were pleased to welcome 3 visitors to our February meeting, and had reminders of our coming coffee morning, the Emlyn Downs AGM and lunch in March and also the Surrey W.I. Council Meeting at Dorking. An outing is proposed to Hatfield House in the Spring, and we had final details of our Calendar Girls outing to Woking Theatre, which a large group of us are much looking forward to. Biff Raven Hill, our speaker this evening, gave a remarkable insight into the lives of her mother, grandmother, and indeed herself, all needing to be extremely strong, resourceful women, living their lives before, during and after the two world wars. It seems their menfolk did not live up to expectations with all the practical aspects of their lives, so thank goodness the women had learned to cope with the difficulties. We heard of Biff’s grandmother’s banana (parsnip!) sandwiches, and mock duck (lentils!), how they made and altered their own clothes, and kept baby equipment to use down the generations. Hearing Biff’s reminiscences of knitted swimming costumes was absolutely hilarious, and she produced 12 domestic items (some making us shudder!) for a light-hearted quiz. We enjoyed pouring over the very many exhibits she had brought along – magazines, medical equipment, kitchen gadgets, etc. from wartime days. Good news – Biff has finally met a man who cooks, cleans and sews the wife she always wanted! As always, we finished with info on our sub-groups, our coming monthly lunch, and the next meeting which will be at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall on Wednesday 6th March when our speaker will be Angela Young, on ‘The Aristocrat, The Able Seaman and the Tragic Sinking of the Titanic’. FROM SANDRA BROWN

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. JANUARY REPORT Our regular newsletter started by thanking the many members who braved an early January evening to indulge in the annual Beetle Drive. Best wishes were sent to those who were unwell or indisposed. It was good to welcome visitor Rosemary and we hope she will come again. Sheila read out a thank you letter relating to the angels project, and her daughter Heather promoted the Pose panto. Treasurer Pat made great inroads into the business side of things with renewals and new memberships. Secretary Sylvia carefully explained the proposed 2019 resolutions which were then voted on to start this annual process. This was our first meeting back in the larger hall for some time and all did not go to plan. The necessary small tables were in the other hall and had to be accessed via the car park on reluctant trolleys. Added to this the two lady manoeuvre bringing the tea trolley down from a higher level plus steps to consider, then the ‘workings’ of the stage located microphone cupboard! As many of us know, so much goes on behind the scenes before a Meeting that an appreciative insight now and again is never a bad thing. The Christmas lunch on 13th January catered for 36 members and was an exceptional success thanks to Treasurer Pat and her assistant Janice. If you would like to visit us please note we meet on the first Wednesday of the month (except August) at 7.30 pm in Fetcham Village Hall. MAUREEN WEBB

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Hampton Cottage Gets A Historic Makeover Scaffolding currently around Hampton Cottage at 64 Church Street, home of Leatherhead Museum, marks the first major refurbishment work at the 17th century building since its formal opening to the public in October 1980. Built at some point between 1649 and 1682, the cottage was bought by the local history society in December 1976 to house its growing collection of artefacts and then underwent transformation of its external timber framework. Although the upstairs had survived surprisingly well, the ground floor level had badly deteriorated and the whole building had to be suspended on jacks while footings were dug out and all the outer walls underpinned. This time the upper timber framed parts are being restored. The Museum is due to reopen after Easter on Thursday, 25 April. The cottage was a private residence as recently as 1975. Dressmaker Hilda Hollis was still working there then from her front room with her cat Poppet lying in the sunny position in the bay window. It had been her family home for the previous 56 years since moving in as a child with her parents William and Maria Barnard in 1919. William’s brother had rented the cottage for the decade before that.

William, former coachman to Thomas Cook, founder of the tour operating firm, ran a business taking people to and from Leatherhead station. Frank Hollis, a cousin, moved into the cottage when he married

72 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - March 2019

Hilda. They were there during World War 2. Frank became superintendent of the Leatherhead telephone exchange and maintained a shed in the garden where he recharged the accumulators for wireless sets in his spare time. Hilda’s parents lived there too until their deaths and Frank and Hilda remained there until his death in 1973. Two years later Hilda moved into a Leatherhead care home where she died in 1977. She left Hampton Cottage 100 years after it had been bought for £135 from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in December 1875. The new owner then, widow of a local brewer, was already living at the adjacent Devonshire Cottage. After her death in 1886, both cottages were left to a niece, Caroline Ockenden who moved with her large family to Devonshire House and is thought to have named its neighbour after her former home at Little Hampton, Sussex. An 1895 photograph shows Hampton Cottage with the name Duke & Ockenden Ltd above the upstairs front window. It seems the company, which made drilling rigs, was using the downstairs front room as an office. A magazine advert from March 1909 reads “Wallace A Ockenden, Artesian Well Engineer and Waterworks Contractor. Pumps and Pumping Machinery. Hot and Cold Water Fitter. Church Street, Letherhead.” Go to www.leatherheadhistory.org for more information from the Leatherhead & District Local History Society.

Spring Gardens By Selina Botham

Spring has sprung and the sap is rising and everything is growing fast. It’s a time to really enjoy the spring treasures in your garden and look forward to the summer as plants burst back into Photo By: Sean Ellis life. If your garden is under control then spring brings so much pleasure, but if tackling the garden is still on your list of things to do, spring can feel overwhelming. It’s at this time of year that I get those urgent phone calls - “Help my garden is a mess - I don’t know where to start!” My first advice is, don’t panic and don’t rush into anything. I have visited too many people who had rushed into a patio, steps and even walls and summer houses, often at great expense, only to find they had made a big mistake. Not many people have the money to start again and there is often little that I can do once the hard landscaping is done. As with everything the best people may be too busy to help you immediately (landscapers and designers tend to be booked up several months ahead) and the design process takes time. Time is needed to work out what the needs are and also what the garden already has to offer. The creative process of ideas and discussion is something to be enjoyed as ideas develop. If your garden needs money spent on it then you’ll want it to be a lasting investment and not something that doesn’t quite work for you. A designer will help ensure that the garden is what you want and works

76 Ashtead and Leatherhead Local - March 2019

practically too. It’s a good idea to start thinking about what you do want and perhaps collect a few pictures of your favourite gardens or looks, or even your favourite plants at the garden centre. Don’t agonise too much though as your designer will only use these pictures to understand your tastes and won’t be ‘copying exactly’. Think about practical needs and requirements too:do you like to sit out in the shade or the sun to eat? Would you like to use your garden mainly for entertaining or for wandering and quiet retreat. Do you long for a water feature or a space to cook outside? Gardens can be nostalgic too, a particular flower or a shady path might remind you of childhood. As a designer it’s always such a pleasure to find out these things and then incorporate these important details into my clients gardens. It’s a fun process and leads to transformation. Ashtead author edits new anthology that encourages people to start the day with a poem “Ten Poems for Breakfast” certainly one of the more unusual ones. I’m a passionate believer in the power of poetry and I was inspired by the idea of encouraging people to start their day by reading a poem (rather than by looking at their phone, for example!) Everyone needs something to set them off on the right foot before they get caught up in their busy daily routine.” In the course of the anthology we find Billy Collins buzzing around his house after several espressos and Lani O’Hanlon walking barefoot to the hen-house to collect eggs, both relishing the quiet solitude of being up early and contemplating the day ahead. For others, the first hours of the day are to be shared with loved ones; slices of toast flying from the toaster provide a vivid childhood memory. The selection also includes three brand new poems that were chosen by Ana as winners in Candlestick’s national breakfast poem competition. Even if you’re not a morning person, these tender and beguiling poems are a reminder that there’s always something very precious about the start of a new day.

One of the most original and successful anthologists at work today has chosen the poems for this enticing new mini-anthology. Ana Sampson has chosen poems that introduce us to all manner of morning delights and remind us that it can never be too early in the day to read a poem. Ana says: “I’ve edited a fair number of anthologies, but this was

For further information about the society & the programme for next year, take a look at our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk

The Arts Society Ashtead held its AGM on 19th February, at which the existing committee was re-elected for another year. We then enjoyed a fascinating lecture entitled “Opera, The Melting Pot of Culture”. Other lectures over the winter months have included “Edouard Manet and His Milieu” and “The Art of Stained Glass”. As the weather warms up, so does the pace of our activities. We have four visits planned over the Spring, Summer and Autumn months, including Standen and Saint Hill Manor, Taplow Court and Dorney Court, The Musical Museum and Syon House, and The D-Day Museum Portsmouth. Two cultural tours are planned, namely to Lincolnshire, and to Vienna. Finally in October, a Special Interest Day on the subject of “Enigmatic Art” - sounds fascinating! Further information can be seen on our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk. Visitors are most welcome at our monthly lectures in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall (3rd Tuesday, 09.30 for coffee, 10.30 lecture).

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead What on earth is true? Is eating a tomato an ethically good choice? This was a dilemma in an American sitcom, ‘The Good Place’ (not seen it but read about it!) which is about the characters having their moral actions scored to see if they deserve to go to a fictional ‘Good Place’ in an afterlife. In the story, eating tomatoes is a healthy choice, scoring positive morality points but loses points due to industrial farming methods, carbon-emitting transport and underpaid labour, giving an overall negative morality score. The sitcom’s storylines neatly demonstrate how our choices can so easily lead us to cause harm unknowingly, even if we have the best of intentions. But can we all be sufficiently well informed to make the ‘best’ choices? A survey of attitudes to genetically modified (GM) foods showed that people who were most concerned about the dangers of these products were those who knew least about them. The report claimed that the less people knew, the more opposed they were to scientific consensus ie that GM foods pose little environmental or health risk. This is in line with an observation by the naturalist Charles Darwin, who commented that “Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge’, an idea more recently described as the Dunning-Kruger effect, which talks about the notion that ‘those with little expertise think they know it all.’ So I’d like to suggest that we all have a duty to find out what we can about environmental issues, particularly things that affect our day-to-day choices of what we eat and how we spend our money and leisure time. What can we do to reduce our personal carbon foot prints? It’s not easy - we live in a complex world, in the era of fake news and sponsored, biased research with contradictory information coming at us all the time. The internet is awash with information of every different shade of opinion. And that is the problem, opinions are not the same as facts. So, is it possible to make choices that are good for ourselves and the planet amid all the confusing contradictions? Here are a few pointers that may help… 1. Check the source of info. Celebrities, business people and politicians may well have an agenda that isn’t fact-based. You wouldn’t ask a plumber to fix your teeth, so why would a lawyer or journalist, for example, be an expert on environmental issues? 2. Be critical. It’s easy to get caught out by snake-oil salesmen and scammers, so pause and think before you believe what you read. 3. Has the information got more than one credited source? Or is it hearsay, anonymous or just an opinion? 4. Use your common sense – does it sound right? Going back to eating tomatoes, one way to get a higher ethical score would be to grow your own… But don’t believe me…check out other sources of information too! Chris Ellis website: www.transitionashtead.org.uk email: info@transitionashtead.org.uk

Burglaries and securing your home this spring Let’s hope that, by the time you read this, we will be starting to see some warmer weather and, perhaps, even some decent sunshine? As we move into spring and look towards summer, it’s important to remain vigilant about the security of your home. It’s tempting to leave your doors and windows ajar to let some air in, but a refreshing breeze may not be the only thing you invite into your house. Unwelcome guests such as opportunists and sneakin burglars could enter your property through these insecurities. Due to the seasonal increase in burglaries it’s so important to be extra careful during the summer months. In three out of ten burglaries the thief doesn’t even have to break in, they gain entry through an open door or window. Burglaries have been known to take place when the home owners are in, or out in the garden. Unfortunately, some Mole Valley residents may well become victims of this type of burglary this summer. Surrey is one of the safest places in the country, but Surrey Police is continuing to crack down on burglary in the county. To ensure we keep burglary to a minimum, it is important that you take these simple steps to make it harder for opportunist thieves to get away with their crimes. Please ensure that when you go out, even for just a few minutes to see a neighbour or pick up the children from school, lock all doors and close ground floor and easily accessible first floor windows. If you

have an intruder alarm, then please set it. When you lock up at night check that all ground floor windows are closed and preferably locked. If you have a bedroom on the ground floor and like to leave a window open for air, fit a security stay which allows ventilation with security. Also, it is traditionally a time when people go away for short breaks and holidays. If you’re leaving your property empty, try to reduce any giveaway signs. Cancel deliveries, cut your lawn and ask a friend or a neighbour to pick up your post and generally keep an eye on your property. It’s also worth setting timers to bring on lights inside your home in a staggered pattern to convey an impression of movement and occupancy. Nowadays, there are even timers that will fit over normal wall light switches and they can be programmed to bring on the lights very much like a timer for central heating. If you have internet access, you could search for “timer switches for wall lights” to see examples of what is now available on the market? It’s always wise to be alert, but during the summer months we all need to pay a bit more attention and check that windows and doors are secure when your home is unattended. It is possible to let the air in and keep the burglar out. Don’t make it easy for the burglar, taking a few sensible precautions to keep them out, will ensure they are the ones that are left hot and bothered.
