Who said British Summers are awful? It’s certainly a scorcher this year isn’t it! As World Cup fever and Wimbledon tennis all seem like a distant memory, I wonder if this year will be etched in our memories like the last big heat wave summer of 1976 ? Global Warming or just a fluke heat wave year, I wonder? I read about an environmentally friendly, air con system the other day, which involved running water over a big pile of terracotta pipes… it cooled the air hugely and looked very pretty too. Not quite sure how one could install this in an office situation but it sounds like a good plan! I expect it may take a few years to perfect but it’s good to know there are planet saving, non conventional options being investigated … Anyway, we have an action packed magazine for you this month with coverage on some more wonderful local events. As you turn our pages do look out for Spiderman, who along with the new, very brave Chairman of MVDC, and others, launched themselves off the top of St Mary & St Nicholas church in Leatherhead recently, all in aid of their Making History building project. Well done to all who took part. I’m sure this was a really fun day. I hope you enjoy reading our restaurant review on pages 48/49. The historic Beaverbrook Hotel has a few restaurant options but on this particular evening the beautiful ‘Garden House’ restaurant was the subject of review; a hidden local gem right on our doorsteps. If you fancy a treat, you will not be disappointed; the location, the atmosphere, the history, the setting, and of course, the food are all fabulous! The hotel are kindly providing us with a great competition prize this month too… This will, I’m sure, be a much enjoyed prize for the winner; Champagne Afternoon Tea for Two at this stunning local hotel. See page 64 for details of how to enter. Good Luck ! We enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon at The Grange in Bookham recently and we are delighted to share some wonderful photos of their 80th Anniversary event. This is such a lovely local charity and we are always happy to support them. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all who attended and the sun-shine certainly added to the occasion. If you have children who enjoy being a little creative, the Leatherhead Museum have a number of free craft sessions running during August, see page 36 for details. Children must be accompanied by an adult btw. That’s about it from me this month. Until next time, do take care. Best Regards,

Ros

Pay in lieu - the new tax rules The tax treatment of monies paid by an employer to an employee in lieu of notice changed on 6 April this year. In doing so, an artifice much loved by employment lawyers will disappear, as local expert Patrick Stewart explains. The pay/compensation distinction Some employment contracts do not include a right for the employer to terminate the employee’s employment immediately and pay monies in lieu of notice. In such circumstances, where an employer does just that, he will be acting in breach of contract by not allowing the employee to work out the notice. Monies paid to the employee in lieu of notice will not be treated as income but as compensation for that breach of contract. As such, prior to 6 April, such monies were not taxable in the hands of the employee up to a limit of £30,000. Contrast this with a case in which the contract of employment does include a right to make a payment in lieu of notice (a ‘PILON’ clause). Payments made by an employer to an employee pursuant to that clause will be treated as income from the employment, and taxable in full, together with liability for employer and employee National Insurance contributions. The changes For dismissals which occur after 6 April 2018, payments in lieu of notice – whether pursuant to an express PILON or compensation for breach of contract – will be taxable and subject to employee and employer National Insurance

contributions. HMRC have devised formulas for calculating the taxable element. It is worth noting that for these purposes, pay does not include overtime, bonuses, commission or benefits in kind. If the contract does not include a PILON clause, these sums could be paid without tax. Why have a PILON? The principal reason to retain a contractual right to pay in lieu of notice is to avoid the employer being in breach of contract by dismissing early and paying a lieu sum. If the employer is in breach in this way, then it can put at risk the enforcement of post-termination restrictions in the contract. For that reason it remains sensible to retain a PILON clause in a contract of employment, especially when dealing with senior staff for whom the benefit of post-termination restrictions are valuable. Looking ahead, in April 2019 there will be further changes under which employers will have to pay employer’s National Insurance contributions on ex gratia payments which exceed £30,000. There will be no such charge to the employee.

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK POTHOLE PETITION With potholes being one of our biggest complaints from residents, we have been recently made aware of the following statistics which might go someway to explaining the situation and suggests that perhaps Surrey is not getting it’s fair share of government funding?. Surrey apparently has almost 3,500 miles of roads with over 4.8 million miles travelled on those roads per year. The recent Pothole Fund announced by the Government saw Surrey get £1.8m, whereas one of our neighbouring counties received £2.9m, and a quiet west country area was given £4.4m. The question being raised is, should the calculation give more weight to traffic flow and level of usage?. e

There is a call upon the Government to reform the Fairer Funding Formula to ensure there is enough money for road repair and up-keep. At the time of writing there was 3,515 signatures. At 10,000 signatures the government will respond to this petition. At 100,000 signatures this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945 Ashtead’s Favourite Tree 2018 At this year’s Ashtead Rotary Village Day, Ashtead Tree Wardens again asked residents visiting ARA’s stand to vote for their favourite tree. This year’s winner, photographed by Maurice Bethel, was the maple tree in Moat Court. Bonfires By the time residents read this, I expect we’ll be moaning about the wet summer weather – well it is the school holidays! However this piece is being written after days of scorching weather in June and huge wildfires on the moors in Yorkshire and Manchester. We still have a lot of problems with bonfires in Ashtead, despite there being a gradual improvement over the last 30 years. The availability of the brown-lid garden wheelie bin has stopped many using bonfires to burn their garden waste, and the availability of the (still free to dispose of ) garden waste area at Randalls Road has also reduced numbers. However, while some residents do still enjoy having a bonfire, in this present hot weather this is not only dangerous in that flying hot ash could trigger fires but it can be very upsetting to neighbours who have their doors and windows open to try to cool down the house. There is also a potential health hazard from the smoke, which can cause distress to anyone with asthma or other

breathing problems. If you have a regular problem with bonfires, please report this to the Environmental Health Department at Mole Valley Council on 01306-885001. Councillor Patricia Wiltshire is leading the way to have more controls in place to prevent bonfires in builtup areas and her personal view is that nothing should be burned in the open air in towns and villages in North Mole Valley. Waste Collection Just to remind you, our waste collection contractors will be changing from Biffa to Amey on 6th August. The change arises from a consolidation of waste collection services across 4 local authorities, including Mole Valley, to form Joint Waste Solutions, saving £2.5 million a year. Although bin collection days are not changing, they may well be emptied earlier so make sure you put out them out the night before. Be prepared for some settling in issues, which should be quickly resolved, but do call 01306-885001 to report any problems, or email info@molevalley.gov.uk Fly-tipping To report any fly-tipping issues, please call Jackie LeesHowe at Mole Valley Council on 01306-79181. SUPER HEROS

RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHURCH TRANSFORMATION

As the crowd gathered to watch the sponsored abseil challenge at Leatherhead Parish church in late June, it was not only blessed with blue skies and hot sunshine, but the spectacle of Spider-Man and 35 others abseiling down the 67ft church tower. Local people from all walks of life participated in the charity fundraiser. Mole Valley District Council Chairman, Raj Haque, volunteered to undertake his first ever abseil to help ensure more people get to know about the church’s Making History project. Speaking afterwards he said, “I was a little bit nervous, but when I started down I felt more and more confident.” Helen, mum and member of the congregation, was also very pleased to be back on firm ground after her abseil. “The church has been incredibly kind and supportive of our family, especially in the last year” she said. “This is a small way of saying thank you and helping with a project that will restore and preserve our beautiful

14 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018

church for our local community for generations to come.” The event was well supported by local businesses too. The Swan Shopping Centre, Patrick Gardner, W.A. Truelove, Surrey Hills Community Radio and local pubs The Edmund Tylney, The Duke’s Head and The Plough all took part. The sponsored abseil challenge is set to raise £10,000 toward the Making History project, which will see the church floor, heating and audio-visual system updated, and the installation of toilets and a kitchen once sufficient funds have been raised. Do you really know what friends are feeling? That deep down inside they’re lost and screaming For help - a moment’s peace. Or moving towards a final release From relentless pressures on every side, Something snaps – and down they slide.

Perhaps in some future computer age Faces will be read like the printed page, With “despair” writ large for all to see, It’s growth denied in privacy. What would we do? What could we say? Now able to read, would we turn away?

MEMORIES OF FELPHAM Copyright Sarah Lott, July 2018

www.thememorybook.co.uk sarah@thememorybook.co.uk | @thememorybook | facebook/thememorybook Ruth wanted to take her children to the seaside at Felpham where she’d stayed with her Aunty Jean every summer when she was a child. She shouldn’t have gone back. She should have known that things would be different, that Felpham would be different. Her memories were pleasantly warped with time, warm and polished like the linseed caressed and much loved cricket bat they used for playing beach cricket. Nevertheless, early one sunny Sunday in August, the family packed up the car with beach toys and a picnic and headed off to the coast. Ruth could feel the familiar waves of childhood excitement as they got closer. Felpham, next to Bognor Regis, was a sleepy village in the shadow of the faded glory of its neighbour. Bognor once attracted wealthy elegance and even royalty but that elegance had faded, to be replaced with garish colours and holiday camps. Ruth’s visits to Felpham were reassuringly predictable. She knew the smell of the place, the texture of Aunty Jean’s candlewick bedspreads and the location of the shrimping nets. Her two older brothers shared one bedroom and she had a small room with a pretty little tapestry chair and, if she stood on her tiptoes at the window, a view of the sea. There was a cupboard in the living room which smelt of mothballs but contained cards, jigsaw puzzles and a frustrating wooden dice game called ‘Shut the Box’. The garden was a pretty handkerchief of lawn, surrounded by a low ornamental wall. Hopscotch paving led to the garden gate and out onto a quiet road towards the sea. Ruth used to go down this road in her flip-flops and towelling poncho, cunningly made by her mother out of an old towel with drawstring loops. There was a promenade along the top of the beach, lined with rows of beach huts in varying degrees of decay. Promenade is a grand name for what it was. Ruth had no interest in imagining elegant ladies with parasols and swishing skirts ‘promenading’ and taking in the sea air. The promenade for Ruth meant walks towards Bognor pier, via the ice-cream van for a ‘99’ ice cream. She loved the swirl of vanilla froth and would

24 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018

always squish her chocolate flake right down into the cone while the creamy stickiness trickled down her arm. Breakwaters divided the beaches. These were wooden posts and walls, leading into the sea - perfect for climbing on, digging beside, jumping over and hiding behind. High tide brought huge waves and the roar of shingle, as it was dragged by the force of the water and released with a resounding crash. Low tide was a very different affair, delicate and calm with rock pools and slippery, seaweed green rocks to explore. There was a ramshackle holiday house for nuns at the end of their road and Ruth used to take great delight in watching the pallid ladies emerge like penguins, wearing black swimming costumes and tightly fitting white rubber caps with chin-straps. Ruth and her brothers got to know many of the local children and spent hours playing ‘Cocky Olly’, a largescale version of hide and seek, covering several local roads. Ruth optimistically set up camp on her childhood Shops & Services beach with Sam and the children but the promenade wall was piled high with stones and the wooden breakwaters were broken or replaced with concrete slabs. The children had a great time but, for her, nothing was the same. She felt empty. Leaving Sam and the children to make a sandcastle, she retraced her steps towards her aunt’s old home, past the well tended bungalow where the nun’s house had once stood. As she walked up to the open gate, a wave of sadness engulfed her. She had no right to skip up that hopscotch path to the handkerchief lawn. Tears pricked her eyes as Ruth turned away and the gate behind her swung closed. It’s familiar creak and bang hit her memory like a lightening bolt. That was her gate, the gate that had signalled the arrival of players of ‘Cocky Olly’, the gate that had meant that she was on her way to the beach. Her gate hadn’t changed and her memories were as precious as ever. Ruth smiled as she returned to make sandcastles with her family. 32

Be in the Kitchen RECIPE

BANANA, RUM & COCONUT CREAM ICE CREAM Another speedy and fun ice cream recipe to enjoy when the moment strikes! Perhaps leave out the rum for the kids, but alternatively (and additionally!) soak a handful of raisins in the rum for a few hours and stir them in at the last moment. YUM! As always, this is a wonderful dairy-free ice cream, full of good things and much cheaper than Ben & Jerry’s! I have some wonderful new larder goodies in my little shop, do take a look, there are some great staples and special ingredients you might enjoy on your holidays!: beinthekitchen.co.uk/shop

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

4 bananas, cut into chunks and frozen overnight 1 x 400g tin full fat coconut milk, chilled for minimum 24 hrs 2 tbsp crunchy hazelnut or almond or cashew butter 1 tbsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp good dark rum, preferably Mount Gay (add more to taste if required!) Optional: a handful of raisins soaked in 2 tbsp rum for a few hours TO SERVE Maple roasted coconut flakes (from Be’s shop!)

1. Make sure you have frozen bananas! 2. Scoop the solid cream out of the tin of coconut milk into a food processor or high powered blender, reserving the leftover coconut water for a smoothie. 3. Add the frozen bananas and the remaining ingredients to the machine and pulse it until it becomes an ice-cream like texture. Add the optional rum soaked raisins now and pulse very briefly to mix in (but not chop up! 4. Enjoy straight away, I did!

The Best Bargains

39

For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

HOME WANTED! Raffy

Handsome Raffy came into care after finding himself as a stray on Box Hill. At first he was very traumatised and didn’t know who to trust but has steadily been making progress over the time he’s been in care and now trusts people he knows well. Raffy is estimated to be about 7-years-old but he plays like a kitten! He can act grumpy when people come to see him but this is only because he hates being in the cattery and doesn’t like the other cats. Raffy is looking for a quiet home with understanding and patient owners and no children or other pets. We know that in a loving and calm environment free of other animals Raffy would totally mellow out and become a lovely companion! If you feel you can give Raffy the loving forever home he so desperately deserves please call Rosemary on 01737 350307

QUINTESSENTIALLY ENGLISH with an Italian Twist

Nestled in the Surrey Hills, the Beaverbrook Hotel resides within 400 acres of beautiful countryside. Built in 1866-70 Beaverbrook’s story is one of English high society at its most charismatic. Defined by colourful personalities, power politics and literary greats, the heritage of Lord Beaverbrook’s erstwhile residence has taken on legendary status. But that was then… Today, Beaverbrook harnesses the energy and charm of it’s heritage and blends it with beautifully designed spaces and places in which to dine, unwind, rejuvenate and indulge. In the main house The Dining Room offers a casually elegant dining experience with a locally inspired Japanese menu with a modern approach to Japanese cuisine by Head Chef Taiji Maruyama that incorporates the freshest, natural & seasonal ingredients. The Parrot Bar mixes up unique and artisan cocktails and serves up wines or spirits from

48 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018

their vast drinks menu along with a tasty bar snack or two. With more developments due to be finished this year, there is something for everyone. Afternoon tea for one thing! See our competition on page 64 for a chance to win a Champagne afternoon tea for two, rumoured to be the best south of London! We recently dined at The Garden House, in the beautiful grounds of the hotel. Tucked away within a magical walled garden, The Garden House is the epitome of English country charm, overlaid with an Italian influence. So warm was the evening, that we chose to sit outside on the terrace to dine. Immediately, you understand the close relationship between the house, restaurant and kitchen garden, where the ingredients for many of the delights on offer are grown and freshly picked. For starters we chose the Seared Scottish Scallops with Guanciale & Chopped Romesco and the Terrine of

Loch Duart Salmon & Basil, White Carrot, Avocado & Horseradish Sorbet. Yes. That’s right! Horseradish Sorbet - which beautifully complimented the Salmon and was absolutely delicious. Our main courses arrived and we had chosen the Chicken Milanese & Black Truffle with local Farm Egg, sautéed spinach with a side order of Green beans & Chives picked straight from the kitchen garden, drizzled with lovely aromatic lemon butter and the Fish of the Day which was freshly caught Sea Trout on warm salad of sweetcorn and beans, with Josper grilled chilli brocolli. The flavours and textures all worked so well together and were beautifully presented on simple plain white plates which added to the wonderful rustic homely charm of the setting. We finished with Slow Baked Cheesecake with passion fruit and roasted white chocolate and Caramelised Sicilian Lemon Tart with raspberries and clotted cream. They were truly

melt in the mouth! The Garden House and kitchen garden is all set in rolling wildflower meadows. You are free to wander amongst it all and it doesn’t take much to imagine that you are deep in the heart of Tuscany. Should you wish to extend your absolute pleasure and enjoyment, there is also accommodation in The Garden House. Imagine waking up in this remarkable and peaceful setting. Ideal for a special occasion, a romantic weekend away or just a getaway from the hustle and bustle of every day life for a night or two where you are made to feel the most special of guests. We finished our visit with a hot infusion of fresh mint from the garden and a stroll through the garden and meadows. It had been a very relaxing evening and we will most certainly be back. So until next time…. Ciao Bella Beaverbrook! For more information: www.beaverbrook.co.uk

Health & Beauty

This month at BABEs is all about reducing our sugar intake.

WHO recommends no more than 6 teaspoons a day. But if breakfast is a small glass of OJ (5 tsps) and a 30gm’s of Alpen (2tsps) you are over the limit before you’ve left the house! Reducing your sugar intake means you will... Snack less, have more energy, sleep better, have much ‘calmer’ periods physically and mentally, reduce hot flushes and other menopausal symptoms, plus lose weight...and keep it off!

HERE’S A FEW TIPS TO KICK IT...

Eat good fats, low fat diets leave you craving carbs! Add avocados, olive and coconut oil to your diet. Get your sweet fix from fruit, berries are best. Swap milk choc for 85% dark, it has an 1/8th of the sugar Get label savvy! Yoghurts contain lots as does ketchup, pasta sauce, baked beans and cereals. 1 teaspoon = 4 grams so aim for less than 24gms a day Stop drinking your sugary drinks, infuse water with fruit to sweeten it instead.

MOLE VALLEY RUNNER S

It’s not every day a sporting legend joins your running group. Well, that’s what happened to the Mole Valley Runners when Dame Kelly Holmes visited them as part of her Join in June campaign. Through the powers of social media and endless shout outs, they were so fortunate that Dame Kelly decided they were worthy of a visit. And what an inspirational lady she is. In just that one run she has given all these incredible runners such a wonderful memory to cherish, full of positivity & inspiration. Their little running group has grown so much & got a well deserved pat on the back for all the hard work they’ve invested into it by getting this chance to run with the legendary Dame Kelly Holmes. Living in the Surrey Hills, they were able to take her on a scenic route from KGV Playing Fields in Effingham up to Polesden Lacey and back again. She loved the views here which we so often take for granted. Her enthusiasm and love for the sport was

infectious and they were all buzzing at the end. The visit from Dame Kelly topped off a fantastic month for Mole Valley Runners. They’ve become an affiliated running club, have now got a qualified running coach, three qualified run leaders and the group is going from strength to strength. Mole Valley Runners are passionate about not just improving physical fitness but also mental well being. They have Mental Health Champions within the group to help break down the stigma of mental health and to encourage people to run and talk. Joining a new group, possibly on your own, can be a major hurdle for a lot of people but they’ve got runners who have taken that step and not looked back. So, if you’re looking for a running club that is inclusive of all, whether you’re a beginner or seasoned runner, male or female, please join their Facebook page Mole Valley Runners.

LOSS OF LAND AT EPSOM GENERAL HOSPITAL

The future of Epsom General Hospital and its healthcare services will be the subject of engagement and consultation meetings over the next few weeks. But please be aware that 20% of the land and occupied buildings at Epsom Hospital are being sold off. We need to resist as robustly as possible this sale of our hospital’s land and resources. Two meetings were scheduled in Epsom for July so please demand that meetings are also held at Ashtead, Leatherhead, and Bookham. These meetings should also be held at a time when as many people as possible are able to attend. Please ring Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group (SDCCG)and ask when such meetings can be held for the convenience of as many people as possible. The person to ring is Jade Winnett (01372 201500).

58 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018

Her e-mail is jade.winnett@nhs.net. You can also send comments and questions to: www.improvingsurreyhealthcaretogether.org.uk/ feedback. We must act now, so please write to your elected representatives at local, county, and national level. Let them know your feelings about the location of the acute hospital. We need to have it at Epsom as it is the geographical centre of the catchment area. It is on the main bus routes, the main road, and main railway stations. It is a very convenient place for patients. More distant hospitals cost lives!! You must speak up now - write, e-mail, and get engaged. If you don’t, you will probably see Epsom General Hospital being downgraded. The ball is in your court.

Discover our heritage at The Grange in Bookham Saturday, 15 September 2018, from 11am - 3pm Uncover our history as the former School of Stitchery and Lace founded in 1938. Fetcham Charities Hits 100! Fetcham United Charities, which runs the Reading Room and the Fetcham Almshouses, celebrates its centenary this year. To mark the occasion, the Almshouse gardens and the Reading Room will be open to visitors on the afternoon of Saturday September 8th – the first of two national heritage weekends. You may have driven past their buildings on the way from Fetcham to Cobham. The Reading Room is the first building on your left immediately after the railway bridge. The Almshouses are opposite, on the corner with River Lane. Although the charity in its current ‘united’ form was founded in 1918, its origins go back to the seventeenth century with the founding of the local Henry Smith Charity in 1627 and the George Shiers Charity in 1685. These charities provided support to single women, local boys wishing to become apprentices, and to the poor of the village. Other charities funded the building of almshouses for local people in need. In total five charities combined one hundred years ago to form Fetcham United Charities.

Run by volunteer trustees, mainly appointed by St Mary’s Church and Mole Valley District Council, the charity ensures that the Almshouses and Reading Room continue to provide a benefit to local people. If you visit the porch of St Mary’s church, you can see the large stone which records the founding of the George Shiers Charity. Sir George was ‘Lord of Slyfield Manor’ near Stoke D’Abernon. The Almshouses Over the centuries, almshouses have provided an early form of social housing throughout England. There are almshouses in many Surrey towns and villages, including Ashtead, Bookham and Leatherhead. The original Fetcham almshouses were located near the far end of Kennel Lane by a chalk pit. The residents were allowed to sell chalk to help support themselves. However, in the early 1800s, four new almshouses were built on the site of the Reading Room - with living quarters on the ground floor and sleeping quarters upstairs. They housed families as well as the elderly. By the 1880s, these almshouses had fallen into disrepair

The old almshouse block

and needed to be replaced. Using local donations, five small almshouses were built in the ‘Abbottsfield’ opposite. The accommodation was cramped and basic. There was no running water and residents had to use an outside bathhouse situated at what is now the end of Monks Green. By the second half of the 20th century, these Victorian almshouses clearly needed updating. There was also the opportunity to create new homes through the building of a modern block of flats. Using existing funds and a loan, both these major works were carried out in the 1980s. Renamed ‘Morley Court’ after Eileen Morley - the Chair of Trustees who made it all happen - the old and new blocks can be seen in the attractive garden opposite the Reading Room. Eileen was later awarded an MBE for her ‘services to Fetcham’. Morley Court now comprises of ten self-contained flats providing social housing for single retired persons with local connections. Conveniently situated for the Fetcham shops, some residents have enjoyed living there for over twenty years. The Reading Room In the 1880s, rather than simply demolishing the old almshouses, the charities decided to turn three of them

into Fetcham’s first village hall with the fourth serving as a home for a caretaker. The funds to do this were generated by selling a strip of land to the company that was building the railway line to Guildford. The hall became known as the ‘Reading Room’ because one of its main uses was as a place where local educated ladies were able to read the papers to less fortunate, illiterate, villagers. In the 1980s the Reading Room was substantially renovated. The Caretaker’s House became the kitchen and hall toilets, a new room was added at the back of the main hall, and the garden was landscaped to provide more attractive surroundings. The Reading Room continues to provide a weekly meeting venue for local groups and is available for hire by local residents for family events such as children’s parties. Finding out more You can find out more about the Reading Room and almshouse accommodation by visiting the Fetcham United Charities website at www. fetchamunitedcharities.org. Better still, come and visit them on the afternoon of Saturday 8th September from 2.00pm. Refreshments available!

‘Over Hill, Over Dale’

MONDAY 27 AUGUST | 6PM

Vaughan Williams Singers, a new Surrey-based chamber choir, will give its inaugural performance at the beautiful National Trust house Leith Hill Place the childhood home of Ralph Vaughan Williams, in a concert on Monday 27 August at 6 p.m. marking the 60th anniversary of the composer’s death the previous day. The choir, which was founded in January this year, already has a wide repertoire, with a leaning towards 20th and 21st century works. It is believed to be the only choir named after Vaughan Williams, the area’s most illustrious musical resident, whose legacy has made a huge and lasting impact on its choral life. The programme for this concert features works, in a largely pastoral vein, by great 20th century British composers including Finzi, Moeran, Ireland, Stanford and Elgar, alongside a variety of other music and readings. Vaughan Williams himself is represented by his small masterpiece for unaccompanied choir, the “Three Shakespeare Songs”. As a contrast, the programme finishes with three songs by a contemporary American composer, Morten Lauridsen, from his suite Les Chansons Des Roses, sung in honour of his 75th birthday. The concert is entitled ‘Over Hill, Over Dale’, taken from the name of the last of the Vaughan Williams Shakespeare Songs. As well as being an apt summary

of the concert’s musical theme, the title is made particularly appropriate by the house’s magnificent and beautiful setting looking out over the North Downs. Talking about the concert Ian says: “We hope our audience will savour the unique combination of stunning views over the Surrey hills and music that reflects the very best of the English choral tradition.” Vaughan Williams Singers was founded jointly by its Musical Director Ian Assersohn and Associate Musical Director Amy Bebbington, two musicians with strong links to the Leith Hill area and its choral traditions, and they will be conducting and introducing the programme. The choir’s accompanist is accomplished pianist (and Ian’s wife) Jan Assersohn.

BOOK REVIEWS AUGUST

‘Only to Sleep’ by Lawrence Osborne (published 6th September, hardback £12.99) Philip Marlowe is back for one last case. He’s 72 and living in retirement in Baja, California. He’s persuaded to investigate Donald Zinn - supposedly drowned off his yacht leaving a much younger and now very rich wife. But is Zinn really dead? Is it an insurance scam - are the pair living off the spoils? Lawrence Osborne pulls this one off with aplomb. Hugely enjoyable. ‘Less’ by Andrew Sean Greer (paperback £8.99) Going anywhere to do anything may not be the most dignified career choice for a man approaching 50, but Arthur Less is prepared to be versatile. His boyfriend of 9 years is marrying someone else, his latest novel has been rejected, and Less is on the run from disappointment. So he accepts all the literary invitations he’s received from around the world - Japan, India, Germany, Morocco - credibility not required. The fine balance of humour, poignancy, travel, literary establishment backbiting and unrequited love is delightful. Genuinely funny, deeply moving. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2018. ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney (published 6th September, hardback £14.99) Normal People follows Connell and Marianne from the same small town in the west of Ireland but they are from different worlds. Connell’s mother works as a cleaner in Marianne’s family home. When they both earn places at Trinity College, Dublin a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. The writing feels very truthful and profound.

ASHTEAD 10K AND 2K FU N RUN

The 13th Ashtead 10k and 2k fun run will take place starting at 11am on Sunday 16 September, around Ashtead Common. The runs have become popular with local runners over the years, and offer a community-based, friendly out-and-back race over the gently undulating tracks and paths of this National Nature Reserve. The race is run with the kind permission of the Ashtead Common Rangers and the Corporation of the City of London. Entry for the 10k race is £15 (£10 less expensive than in 2017, to encourage the participation of more local runners) and entry to the 2k fun run is only £5. Although there is no maximum age for the fun run, there is a minimum age for the 10k of 15 years old on the day of the race. The Ashtead 10k is organised by Ashtead Running Group, and benefits Rianna’s Fund, the local charity that supports orphanages and schools in East Africa and India. Since its inception, the Ashtead 10k has raised over £13,000 for charity. The Ashtead 10k has been named as one of Britain’s best 10k races several times over the years.

The Ashtead 10k and 2k fun run also claim to be ‘Britain’s Greenest Races,’ with the environmental impact of the races kept as low as possible. Participants are encouraged to use low-carbon means of arriving at the race (such as train, cycle or even running), and all other aspects of the race have been carefully considered to keep their impact as low as possible. The race entry fee includes entry into the post-race raffle, where everyone gets a prize. Home-made cakes and other goodies are for sale at the race HQ, in the Ashtead Pelham Scout Hut. Despite its local and green character, the 10k race is seriously competitive. The male course record is by Nick Hodges (33), of Dorking and Mole Valley AC, in 34:32 (2009); and for the ladies, Katherine Wilson (28), 26.2 RRC, in 41:14 (2013). For anyone not in the know, these are seriously quick times! Having said that, all runners, irrespective of their times, are welcome at the event, which is one of the friendliest in the known universe. Search ‘Ashtead 10k’ to enter online.

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I MEETING REPORT

The June meeting was extremely well attended and included two new members and one visitor. Colin Parrish proved an exceptional speaker, loaded with facts and innumerable names. His subject, the Daughters of Queen Victoria, certainly a popular choice, and he has already been booked in for next July on a similar theme. On 12th June an outing to Worthing. World War Two Veterans, including Chelsea Pensioners, were also in this popular seaside destination on the day we visited. Started nearly seventy years ago by London cab drivers, their annual event included a traditional fish and chip lunch and ice cream treat. The gentlemen spent six hours in the vicinity of the pier, chatting and reminiscing, before their journey back to London which started out at 6.30 that morning. Our own little band of comrades, numbering 24, enjoyed a coolish and cloudy day but without rain. I think we all agreed

that this ‘first’ outing was a great success. Well done Betty and Pat. Fifteen knit and natterers arrived at Pat’s welcoming venue, and took full advantage of a bottomless teapot. Her neighbour had kindly contributed a wealth of craft items, needles and patterns – much appreciated. Surrey Centenary picnic at Wisley on the evening of 28th June, gave W.I. members, family and friends, the opportunity of viewing the pollinator trail. Our entry was named Merry Monarch, and these numerous exhibits formed an eclectic and amazing display of skilful craft and enthusiasm. We welcome newcomers to our friendly meetings which take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Rumble Room at Fetcham Village Hall.

FROM MAUREEN WEBB

Ashtead WIng is part of a new generation of WI’s. We meet on the second Monday of the month from 8pm to 10pm in Ashtead Baptist Church Hall.

We have a varied and exciting programme of speakers and events at our meetings. So far this year our speakers have included representatives from the Woodland Trust and Greenpeace and also a highly informative talk on gut health!

Our special interest groups are very sociable and very popular with our members. They include a Craft group, a Foodie group, two Book Clubs, a Walk & Talk group, a Theatre group, a Days Out group and more!

New members and guests are always welcome and we look forward to seeing you at a future meeting. For more details, please visit our website or contact us via email. Next meeting 10th September 2018

MOLE VALLEY W.I MEETING REPORT

Mole Valley WI members met for our monthly meeting where our president welcomed three visitors and conducted the business. We have trips arranged to go to Wisley for the Surrey Federation Centennial celebration and our very pretty butterfly for this event was displayed on the stage. We have other outings arranged for a trip to London to see the Christmas lights and also a trip to Gun Wharf Quays for a Christmas market. We then had our speaker Gill who captivated us by talking about her life in quilts. Gill made her first quilt from fabric of dresses her daughters had outgrown. She has made wonderful quilts and wall hangings ever since for her daughters’ weddings

and then ones for cots for each of her grandsons. Gill explained that every culture and country has a patchwork and quilting tradition. Although Gill has been quilting for over forty years she still attends workshops regularly for new ideas and inspiration. In recent years Gill and others have made quilts for injured servicemen at Headley Court, Combat Stress and for terminally ill children. There is information about on our website molevalleywi.btck.co.uk about our other activities. We always welcome visitors so please come along to our next meeting on August 14th, for some ‘Picnic and Pimms’ and Games.

ASHTEAD W.I MEETING REPORT

Hooray - our very thoughtful committee had provided us with very welcome cold drinks to start our meeting on this extremely warm evening. In June, Ashtead Village Day was again a big success for us, raising funds to support our W.I. over the coming year. Also in June, we also had a very good day for our outing to Portsmouth, visiting Fort Nelson, taking a boat trip around the harbour and walking some of the older parts of the town with our Blue Badge Guide. Another enjoyable time was had at Wisley where we joined other Surrey W.I.s in the evening to picnic, hear music, and look round the pinetum where over a hundred handmade pollinators were displayed (including our Ashtead Blue Butterfly of course). Henry VIII (otherwise known as John White) was our speaker this evening. He arrived with all pomp, majesty, and in full regalia to tell us about his father, Henry VII, brother Arthur, and really sad tales of tribulations with all his wives - despite being The King!! This year 6,500 members attended the W.I. AGM in

Cardiff, and we were very pleased to hear that nationally there had been 19,000 new members and 86 new W.I.s. The excellent speakers were Dame Stella Rimington and Huw Edwards. News was given of successful fund-raising for our Denman College, and this year’s Resolution on Mental Health Matters passed with 98% of votes. Future events for Ashtead will be a visit to Waddesden Manor in August instead of our monthly meeting, and a Surrey W.I. event at Guildford Cathedral in September marking W.I.s 100 years anniversary. Before closing the meeting a ballot was held as to as to whether to stay in our usual meeting room, or move to the larger main hall. Views were given on both options, and the result was that we will be moving to the larger hall on Wednesday 5th September, 7.15 for 7.30 when our speaker will be Yvonne Sanders on Canine Partners, and perhaps she will be bringing a canine friend along?

ASHTEAD WORKING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE

The lazy gardeners guide to boosting pollinators.

There are many initiatives to help pollinating insects - we all know that they are vital for our food security supply. David Attenborough recently emphasised again that humans would only have four years to live should bees become extinct, which is a sobering thought. One of the easiest ways to help boost pollinator numbers is to leave an area of grass in your garden unmown. We have three areas of long grass and at our recent open garden the most common questions were: did it need clearing, seeding, and should any plants be added? The answer is no, no and no! All you do is define an area, stop mowing it and have patience! Cut once a year in the late summer/ autumn after the seeds have set and make sure to rake off all the stalks etc to reduce the fertility of the soil. The first few years you will get the stronger grasses growing, which are lovely on a breezy day, but gradually these will reduce as the fertility decreases and flowering plants naturally colonise the area. Our three areas are all at different stages. The first was started by the previous owners so has been left for many years and consequently this has the shortest grasses and includes various types of clover, vetches and moon daisies; the second area in its fourth year is planted with spring bulbs - it was a wonderful field of zinging yellow buttercups and long grasses in early summer. As an experiment to make it ‘prettier’ in the last couple of years I have added a few plants including

74 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018

Camassia leichtlinii Alba, Orange hawkweed (Fox and cubs), and Ajuga reptans (bugle) which has spread from a nearby border. I was delighted last year when the long grasses attracted Small Skipper butterflies, their preferred habitat. My third area in the front garden is very badly drained and mossy. but get close up with a magnifying glass and mosses reveal their wonderful little flowers! I have added spring bulbs, Camassia quamash and primroses. I love this method of gardening, giving nature freedom to evolve and the plants to colonise to exactly the conditions in the garden – it saves time, effort and money. And you can just sit back and know you have boosted the food supply for visiting pollinators! NOTE. Following my last article about the environmental impact of pets I’ve learnt about a natural way of keeping your dog tick free - use vinegar on its fur: Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle and apply your dog’s coat before going out. Or rub the mixture into the dog’s coat after a bath, and you can add to their food. Drinking a table-spoon a day can be beneficial for humans too - adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your diet can help you lose weight, especially belly fat! SELINA CONSIDERS ‘WHAT MAKES A GARDEN SPECIAL?’

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham considers ‘What makes a garden special?’ I’ve been thinking about the differences between inside and outside and especially with all the demands of modern living I think that the garden becomes more crucial for our wellbeing. Being outside is completely different to being inside and there is something very special about it. You can see the clouds…and the vast expanse of the sky…feel the warmth of the sun and enjoy the sights, smells and touch of a green and changing space. I am sure we have all witnessed how different a child’s behaviour is when they’ve been playing outside and experienced ourselves how a breath of fresh air seems to clear your head. Being in a beautiful green space is so good for us and there is plenty of scientific research available that backs this up and shows how important a good quality green space is for wellbeing and healing. Glossy magazines seem to tell us that our gardens should be an extension of our homes, but I worry that they are somehow missing the point. We do need to make sure our gardens are easily accessible but, rather than making the garden feel like an extension to the house, I think it’s best to enjoy the difference. Here are my top tips for making more of your garden

as an important and different part of your home. Make the transition into the garden a specific experience to be enjoyed and not an accidental occurrence. Use a step or a change of material, perhaps plant a scented plant or have soft foliage to brush against or walk over. Create a green tunnel effect, planting both sides of the route out can be very effective. Create a focal point (or several) in the garden with destinations that you will want to reach, this will help to draw you outside. Use places within your garden to create an escape where you can retreat to. Enjoy the view back to the house and feel ‘away from it all’. Take a mini-break in your garden. Perhaps with a book and a cold drink. Lie there and enjoy nature and watch the clouds go by. Selina Botham an award winning local garden designer. The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018 83

Thousand year old mosaic landscape in North Downs to benefit from revival in traditional hedgerow skills Surrey Wildlife Trust wins National Lottery support to engage younger people in Hedgerow Heritage project A Surrey Wildlife Trust project to revive traditional hedge planting and laying skills in the local community has received initial National Lottery support* for the Hedgerow Heritage project. Made possible by National Lottery players, the project aims to involve thousands of local people in the restoration of hedgerows within the iconic landscape of the North Downs, part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Development funding has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help Surrey Wildlife Trust progress their plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant approaching half a million pounds in July 2019. The project to plant, protect and restore more than 80 kilometres of hedgerows in Surrey is part of a countywide strategy to reverse the fragmentation of the countryside and encourage stewardship of the landscape in the future. The project will engage thousands of local people,

84 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - August 2018

with a focus on young people from school children to youth groups, to take part in the project. The project will include hedge laying competitions, a family hedgerow festival and storytelling workshops. The project aims to pass on hedge planting and laying skills from local hedge laying societies to community volunteers, landowners, farm managers and public and private sector contractors. Well maintained hedgerows not only provide field boundaries, but also vital habitat for flora and fauna and enable species such as dormice, bats, insects and butterflies to travel safely across the landscape. Hedgerows prevent soil erosion and provide a natural barrier to reduce pesticides and fertilisers reaching rivers too. Andrew Jamieson, project development manager at Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: “We’re delighted to win this funding from the National Lottery players. It is an incredible opportunity to engage with local communities, to keep heritage hedgerow skills alive and pass on expertise from one generation to the next.” Surrey Wildlife Trust will be engaging with local community groups over the coming months to develop the project further.

SURREY POLICE NOTICE ABOUT BURGLARIES WHEN ON HOLIDAY

We have received a few reports recently of homes being targeted by burglars whilst the owners are away on holiday. Whilst any burglary is likely to cause considerable distress to victims, it can have the additional impact of ruining a well-earned break and having to come back to deal with the fallout of having been targeted by thieves. There are some things; over and above the obvious of making sure that all doors and windows are locked and secured, that can reduce the risk of this type of burglary. The following are some ideas to consider:• Don’t announce that you are going to be away on any form of social media. Although it’s nice to share with friends what you’re doing, it also advertises that your home is going to be empty! • Cancel any regular newspaper deliveries or (if you have an external mailbox) ask a neighbour to take in your post, so that the risk of giving the impression that no one is at home is reduced. • Make use of timer switches to bring on lights in your home in a staggered pattern, mirroring as closely as possible your normal movements throughout your home. One timer is not really enough to give an impression of occupancy. Ideally, I would suggest three timers – two downstairs and at least one upstairs. • Don’t leave any “climbing aids” at the front of your home, such as wheelie bins, which could be used to

climb over a side gate. Also, make sure that side gates are securely bolted and, ideally, the bolt should be at waist height and not at the top where someone could reach over and open it! • If you normally park a car on your driveway and there is not going to be any vehicle there whilst you are away, consider asking a neighbour to park their vehicle on your drive, to increase the impression that the house is occupied. • If you have an alarm system, please set it. A visible intruder alarm is one of the most effective deterrents against opportunistic thieves. Burglars do not want to be seen or heard and a visible alarm system tends to make them think twice! • If you are considering having an alarm system installed, I would suggest that you check out the National Security Inspectorate’s website – www.nsi.org.uk. You can enter your postcode and find details of local security companies who are accredited to the highest national standards. I would always suggest that you obtain two quotations before making any decision. If you are concerned about your home and property security, you can always request a free home security survey. This is available to any residents or businesses in Mole Valley. Contact 101 and ask to speak with Crime Reduction Advisor, Neil Clarke.

the property matchmakers Rufus has been inconsolable since Ruby’s owners sold their property and moved away. He has barely left the sofa. So, after discussions with the sales and rental property experts at Jackie Quinn Estate Agents, the only thing for it was for Rufus’ owners to move near to Ruby. There are many reasons people decide it’s time to make a move. It may not be on your radar just now, however, when the time is right we can sell your property and find another beautiful home for you and your pack.
