The vibrant autumn colours seem to have arrived a little earlier than normal this year, maybe that’s been caused by the scorching summer? Anyway, it’s looking very pretty around the villages and the conkers will soon be falling. Let’s enjoy the last few weeks of lighter evenings, before the time change slips us into early darkness…. (Clocks go back on Sunday 28th October) Very sadly, in late August, Goff Powell passed away. Goff had, for many years, kindly provided us with a whole array of fascinating local history features. I only worked with him for a relatively short time but he was always so lovely; a gentle and kind man is my lasting impression of him. It was an honour to know him and he will be greatly missed. We include a touching obituary from his close friend and fellow historian, Brian Hennegan, with a lovely post script from Zen George our previous editor who knew Goff for many years and has some lovely words to contribute. Our thoughts go to Goff’s family who I hope will find a little comfort in knowing how much we all enjoyed Goff’s contributions to the magazine. May he rest in peace. If you enjoy a spot of poetry do take a look at our book review on page 26. This lovely collection of poems would make a great gift to any keen poet, loving friend or relative or even for yourself ! Enjoy. We have another great competition within; the chance to win a family ticket to attend ‘The Railway Children’ at The Leatherhead Theatre as part of their up-coming Leatherhead Rep Season. See page 34 for that. As well as all this, we include coverage of a fund raising Crazy Golf event and some exciting news from the fabulous, near-by charity The Grange; a lottery funded Heritage Room is now open to the public at the Bookham charity. I had no idea of their Royal connections! Finally, I just wanted to thank everyone who entered our ‘Afternoon Tea at The Beaverbrook Hotel’ competition last month! We had an overwhelming response! Our lucky winner is listed on page 93, I do hope you have a truly lovely visit. All this and lots more within, I hope you enjoy our October issue. Until next time, do take care,

Ros

Landlords beware! Is your property EPC compliant? Since 1 April 2018, there is a requirement for any properties rented out in the private rented sector to have a minimum energy performance rating of ‘E’ on an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The regulations apply to new lets and renewals of tenancies with effect from 1 April 2018, and for all existing tenancies from 1 April 2020. Unless there is an exemption (such as the property is listed and upgrading the energy efficiency would be detrimental to the character of the building), it is unlawful to rent a property which breaches the requirement for a minimum E rating. Penalties up to £4,000 can be imposed for such breaches. The regulations apply to any domestic, private rented property which is required to have an EPC. If the property is exempt, then it must be listed on the PRS Exemptions Register – the property will be assessed and, once declared exempt, the exemption is valid for a period of 5 years. These new rules have come into force quietly, and it is likely that many private landlords are blissfully unaware that they are letting unlawfully - we are yet to see how the regulations will be enforced by the local authorities. Accordingly, not only those with existing properties, but those looking to buyto-let will have to be conscious of the EPC rating

at the time of initial purchase. Even those buying a property to live in should be aware of these obligations as they may wish to consider letting it out in the future. There are a number of schemes in place to help landlords improve the energy efficiency of their rental properties. For further information, you can contact your local authority, who will be able to provide direction in this regard. Another point for landlords to be aware of is that it will be considered an offence to withhold consent for any reasonable request from a tenant to improve the energy efficiency of their home. There is further guidance on the government website as to what constitutes a ‘reasonable’ request and on what grounds landlords can refuse such requests: https://www.gov.uk/ government/publications/the-private-rentedproperty-minimum-standard-landlordguidance-documents. Only time will tell how this will impact landlords, and ultimately their profits!

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Do you know how difficult it is to write a monthly article for this magazine? There are some months when the articles almost write themselves, Ashtead Spring Clean and Christmas, but even then you have to think and plan at least six weeks ahead due to copy dates and ensure you have accurate information. Plus you never know what’s going to be a hot topic six weeks ahead, or what, by then, is old news. For example the hot news as this is being written is the unwelcome incursion of Travellers to the Recreation Ground. It would have been extremely handy to have had second sight and written a warning article long before they arrived.Sadly, even having taken the Duracell batteries out of my bunny and put them in my crystal ball they seem to have expired and look as hard as I might I cannot see what topic will be on everyone’s lips at the end of September. The children will be back at school and the number of cars on the road will have tripled from now. There will still be roadworks in besieged Ashtead. There will still be traffic jams and road rage in the Leatherhead Road and Barnett Wood Lane. There will, perhaps, be even more cars parked in Woodfield Lane making it a one-lane race-track. The building works on the corner of Craddocks Parade may have started by then and we will all be moaning about the road restriction, the dust, the noise and the builders’ vans parked everywhere. So pick any one of those for your topic and write an article, only to find that in six weeks there is something completely unforeseen that is now the subject on everyone’s lips and featuring in the Facebook posts on Ashtead Parents or Ashtead Unhinged. Of course, whether on social media or

in general conversation, the cry is that “someone should do something about this” and, quite often, someone is very busy trying to do something - too busy doing it, in fact, to stop and broadcast about it! Being the age I am, I increasingly see elements of Victor Meldrew in me. I am easily irked! For example, those residents using the station may have noticed that the flowerbeds have begun to look increasingly untidy and weedy. Most people take it for granted that the flowerbeds plant and weed themselves but this is not the case and a few stalwart residents have tended them in the past. That is until February this year, when the Residents’ Association was informed that, due to an incident at another Southern Station, a full Risk Assessment is now required for any activity on station land, accompanied by a medical questionnaire for each resident participating in the activity. We dutifully submitted three sets of paperwork – one for gardening, one for the Spring Clean event and one for general weekly litter-picking. The authority for the Spring Clean arrived too late for that event and has already expired. The authority for the weekly litter-pick arrived in July and, after numerous chasing emails, we finally received the gardening authority in early August. Until then, we couldn’t weed, prune or even water the beds. It may be too late to save many plants but now we have permission we would welcome help from residents in trying to tidy and prune. Anyone wishing to help should email the webmaster on webmaster@ashteadresidents.org.uk. David Baker Webmaster, Highways & Rail

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK OAKFIELD SCHOOL - In August we decided to give £400 to support the school’s new gardening project. Children from each year group will grow vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, and hopefully acquire some green fingers in the process! The project links with the Design and Technology part of the curriculum. The money was needed to fund garden tools, growbags, seeds and bird feeders. We were also delighted once again to award bursaries, in the form of Amazon vouchers, to two pupils in each year group. The John Piper award is for good presentation of work, and the Behaviour for Learning award covers willingness, involvement and conduct. Congratulations to all the winners! plans from Stonegate Homes have been submitted in a new application and are now being considered by Mole Valley District Council. As before, the scheme allows for 10 apartments with a ground floor retail space. However, the new plans propose a less imposing pitched roof, more in keeping with buildings nearby. Public consultation has now closed, so we await a decision with interest. RIVER MOLE DISCOVERY DAY: Sunday 30th September, 12noon - 4pm - will be a great opportunity to learn all about our wonderful local river from experts and volunteers. P OEM C O RN E R RETURNING TO WORK If you’re feeling past your prime Returning to work is a trying time. The Office you knew belongs to the past, Everything now moves incredibly fast With row upon row of square machines Issuing orders on viewing screens. You can’t avoid the new computer That throws up data and tells the future, A faultless memory, nothing’s missed, With everything stored on a floppy disc!

A golden rule is, “Learn to Adjust, Watch your Hands, and Watch your Bust”, For new machines are so electronic And terribly sensitive, it would be chronic If leaning forward precipitated A chain reaction not anticipated, A wrong key pressed, it comes to a halt And angrily bleeps because of the fault. Your machine at home though out of the Ark, Never threw tantrums and refused to start! What you notice most of all Is the age of the people now in control, For youth and technology go together And at that “certain age” you wonder whether You’re able to cope? – But rest assured Employers like ladies who’re well matured, Efficient and friendly, prepared to adapt, Tackling all problems with patience and tact. These lines, of course, are senseless twaddle After running a home, the Office’s a doddle!! Isn’t it??

LOOKING FOR

DOG

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

Would you like a little extra income? Roz Bourne phone: 01372 453047 | 07969 196 227 email :kt@waggingtailsuk.co.uk www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/kt/carer-enquiry

SHE IS FIERCE Brave, bold and beautiful, poems by women. She is Fierce is a collection of inspiring poems written by women that span the decades, well centuries, actually. There is a richness to this collection of poems. They examine love, loss, nature, body image, friendship, mental health, resistance, joy; well life really. The poets are all ages, young and old, from various periods of our past and present and from all walks of life: Sojourner Truth, a slave, civil rights campaigner and so much more. Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple and another civil rights campaigner. Imtiaz Dhakar, a self professed Scottish Muslim Calvinist, artist and documentary maker. Farmer’s daughters, artists, lawyers, kitchen maids, aristocracy, accountants, a medieval visionary, online superstar and a microbiologist are just a few of the other walks of life that these women come from. It gives this collection of poems a depth and range of interest previously unseen. There is truly something for everyone. What makes this particular collection of poems stand out for me, is that it satisfies my unending curiosity about the story behind the story! At the back of this book is a section of short biographies about each author. I was able to read about them all and it gave me a window into their world that gave me a greater understanding of the their poems, what they meant and why they were written. This book is brought to us by Ana Sampson who is the author of many bestselling anthologies. Ana’s ‘day job’ is as a book publicist and she has worked with authors

26 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - October 2018

including Norman Wisdom, John Barrowman and Sir Roger Moore as well as brands including Wagamama and Green & Black’s Chocolate, on fiction campaigns and also on quirky bestsellers including Norwegian Wood and Where’s the Meerkat? Her first anthology, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud... And other poems you half remember from school, was published in 2009 and was the number 3 poetry bestseller that year. Four other anthologies followed. One day she looked for an anthology of poems by women to buy, assuming she’d be spoilt for choice, but discovered only rather niche titles: women’s war poems, or 19th Century women’s poems. There was nothing general that covered all eras. She decided to fill the gap herself! The result is She Is Fierce! She lives in Ashtead with her husband, two small daughters and two demanding cats, and says she loves living in Surrey! Ana can often be seen cycling on Ashtead Common with her family (not the cats, though!) She enjoys getting out into the countryside (as well as enjoying pub lunches in some of Surrey’s wonderful pubs!) Ana will be talking about her book at events including the Henley Literary Festival on 4th October(with poets Nikita Gill and Deborah Alma) https://henleyliteraryfestival.co.uk/hlf-eventsystem/she-is-fierce-brave-bold-beautiful-poemsby-women/ and Guildford Literary Festival on 10th October (with poet Polly Clark) http://www. guildfordbookfestival.co.uk/poetryevent/ Ana’s book is available from Waterstones and all good bookshops.

MOLE VALLEY

The Best Bargains

AGE Concern FREE COMPUTER COURSES

For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

If you are over 55 and live in the Mole Valley area, you can use Age Concern’s free computer courses based in either Dorking or Leatherhead.

NEW DAWN HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

The course runs once a week for 6-8 weeks. Topics covered will include: browsing on the internet, basic keyboard and mouse skills, using an iPad/Tablet, setting up and using your own email or skype accounts and how to shop on the internet as well.

2.30 pm – Sunday 28 October at Leatherhead Theatre

Those who already own a laptop or an iPad/Tablet are encouraged to bring that to learn on. Computers can be provided as well - it’s up to you!

FOR ALL YOUR COMPUTING NEEDS

Before coming to the course, you must register your interest by telephoning

THINKING OF CHANGE APPLE OPTIONS?

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

For many years we have been providing solutions based around Apple products, including full data transfer, system setup, installation and Total Care support. We offer the full range of machines including IPads, iMac, MacBooks and more, with most devices instore for immediate purchase. As their product range is wide and varied we can best interpret your needs to match the most appropriate solution. To provide a little more substance I hope the following guide is useful: They offer 3 version of the iPad, being the iPad Pro available in 2 screen sizes 10.5” and 12.9” all with varying memory capacities, the iPad with a 9.7” screen size again in various memory capacities, finally we have the iPad mini with its 7.9” display and 128Gb of storage Often we do have used and refurbished units which will work as new and offer you a real cash saving Moving onto the computers, Apple offer both notebook and desktop machines, the most popular

desktop machines are called the iMacs which are sleek all in one units and are available in two different screen sizes the 21.5” and 27”, within each model range there is a selection of options, for different processors, memory, hard drives and graphics cards

30 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - October 2018

The notebook range offers three distinct models, The MacBook, Macbook Air and Macbook Pro . The MacBook is very light weighing in 0.9Kg, having battery life of upto 10 hours with a 12” display The Macbook Air has a 13” display, weighs in at 1.35Kg, battery life is upto 12 hours Finally the MacBook Pro is the larger, more powerful machine with screen size options of 13” and 15”, a range of processors, memory and graphics options ensuring you have the best specification to suit your requirements We do advise installing an internet Security program like Webroot on the machine to maintain your protection, which can be added or is an integral component of our comprehensive support package called Total Care Programs like Microsoft Office and Photoshop all have specific versions optimised to run on the Mac- which again are all items we can supply Moving your current data from a PC to a Mac, or a Mac to Mac, is a task our engineers can carry out for you, we can even bring the machine to your premises and set it up in your environment too There is a lot of choice and we are happy to advise you on the best solution for your needs.

NEW KINGSTON ROAD PLAYGROUND OPENS IN LEATHERHEAD

The new pirate-themed playground at Kingston Road Recreation Ground was officially opened by the Chairman of Mole Valley District Council, Councillor Haque, on Friday 17th August. The winning playground design by Kompan, the play company behind the hugely popular Meadowbank Playground, was chosen following three public consultations held in 2017-2018. Work began on-site in early July and was officially opened 6 weeks later. The imaginative new playground has a range of fun and inclusive features, including: a pirates’ Crow’s Nest with slide, inclusive carousel, trampoline, zip wire, young explorers lookout tower, octopus see-saw and even its very own pirate’s parrots. Councillor David Hawksworth CBE, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “The completed Kingston Road Playground is a wonderful example of how Mole Valley can work with communities to shape

32 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - October 2018

the creative, inclusive and exciting play facilities they wish to see. The new features of the refurbished piratethemed playground provide children the opportunity to play, learn, imagine, and perhaps make new friends. We plan to continue to invest and promote recreation, leisure, and cultural facilities across the District to provide for residents of all ages, abilities, and interests.” To further celebrate this exciting new space, Mole Valley District Council supported Surrey Police and B@titude by hosting a family fun event, ‘Fun at Kingston “Wreck!” on Thursday 30th August at the Kingston Road Recreation Ground. Picnic’s, tea cups rides, games played and everyone enjoyed our pirate treasure hunt. For more information see www.molevalley.gov.uk/kingstonroad. At Kingston Road Recreation Ground the refurbished skate park designed by CANVAS will also soon be able to open. Work began in late July and was completed in September.

Leatherhead Theatre Competition Hidden behind a Leatherhead street-front is one of the best theatres of the 1960s. Access from the street is by way of a short corridor. A feature of the theatre is that all the foyer areas and the auditorium are accessible to wheelchairs. Standard now, this level of consideration of the disabled was outstanding when it opened in 1969, and won the building a new disability award in 1971. On the ground floor is the coffee bar. There is also a licensed bar open during evening performances and an area used as an art gallery and available to hire for exhibitions. As with many 1960s British theatres the auditorium seats are all on one steeply raked tier; unusually they are undivided by aisles, keeping the audience as a single unit. The auditorium is remarkably unaltered, with its original decor and its brick-tile walls with four expressive lighting slits curving out. Because of its thoughtful design and its relatively small number of seats, The Theatre is one of the most intimate and architecturally accomplished proscenium theatres of British modernism. Details of productions, opening and contact information can be found on: www.the-theatre.org

The Grange helps people with disabilities lead independent and fulfilling lives but we urgently need volunteers who could give up 1 hour a week to: • Drive a person to their work placements • Drive people with a disability to social and sports activities • Act as a buddy for a person with a disability

You probably have questions about mileage, insurance, using Grange vehicles, etc so why not call us for a chat on 01372 452608 or email info@grangecentre.org.uk Registered Charity No 207740.

The Grange open State of the Art Heritage Room funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund

We were delighted to pop along to visit the new state of the art heritage room, designed to showcase The Grange charity’s historic collection of needlework and its fantastic connection with the royal family. The room has just recently opened to the public. The new facility, located in The Grange’s Victorian main house in Bookham, has been funded by a £97,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and tells the story of the charity’s beginnings as The School of Stitchery and Lace, which was first founded in 1938, to its current role as a charity supporting people with learning disabilities and assisting them

to lead independent lives. The project has involved carefully preserving the charity’s historic collection of needlework, which included embroidered items made for the Royal Family, photographs, letters and books. there are numerous letters between The School and royal households which give a rare insight into palace life at the time. One letter is from Queen Elizabeth’s nurse ordering a copy of a dress and there are also hand-drawn designs for Queen Mary’s nightgowns. We will have more to report on this fabulous, new learning and heritage space, in our next issue.

CRAZY IN ESHER! On Sunday 9th September at Sandown Park Golf Centre in Esher, David Smith from Wishing Well in Bookham, along with his wife Michelle, their friends Viv Barlow & Beverlie Isaacs, and Val Woodward & Sam Janes from the Princess Alice Hospice charity shop in Bookham and team held a charity Crazy Golf day to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Over a hundred people paid to play and along with a Winner’s Post tombola and a luxury raffle over £1300 was raised. Surrey Hills Community Radio station came along and entertained the players with a wide range of music throughout the event. www.surreyhillsradio.co.uk David Smith said “I am delighted with the success of the day. People have been so generous with their time, money and donations and this has enabled us to raise a great amount of money for this worthy cause” As always, Bookham businesses, too numerous to mention, were extremely generous in donating prizes. A special mention has to go to Georgia, Beverlie’s daughter, whose employer Willian Reed Business Media in Crawley www. william-reed.com donated an amazing array of wines and champagnes which no doubt contributed to the success of the raffles. Thanks also go to Sandown Park Golf Centre who generously provided the facilities free of charge and donated a whole raft of prizes to enable people to enjoy their amazing facilities on another visit. For more information about Crazy Golf and other activities at Sandown Park Golf Centre go to: www.sandownparkgolf.com David and the team want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for making the day a great success.

Your Sanctuary is a Woking based charity which works to prevent domestic abuse and undo the damage it does to individuals, families and communities. We provide refuge for women and their children fleeing abuse, a community outreach service for women, men and children and a specialist helpline. There is also a strong focus on advocacy, education and support programmes which help survivors and their families to go on and lead lives without fear. We continue to experience a high level of demand; we rely heavily on our dedicated team of staff and volunteers; without who it would be impossible to deliver the support many so desperately need. Each Outreach Worker regularly supports 30-40 clients at any one time and we receive more than 200 calls to our helpline each month. Our refuge team support up to 13 women and their children at any one time. They arrive from all over the Country often with just a suitcase of belongings. Our Children’s Service – both in refuge and outreach – has continued to grow. Witnessing domestic

abuse can have a detrimental effect on children who may feel vulnerable and lack self-esteem. We encourage children to speak openly in a safe and nonjudgemental environment. Through both individual therapeutic sessions and group programmes, we are constantly learning more about the needs of the children and their non-abusive parent and how we can support them on their journey to recovery. We are very proud of this ground-breaking and innovative work which provides hope for the future. Like many charities, yourSanctuary is always looking for new ways to increase our funding and resources. To find out more about the work we do, then visit our website www.yoursanctuary.org.uk. If you need support, phone our confidential helpline (9am to 9pm seven days a week) on 01483 776822. If you would like to help fundraise then please contact Wendy Denty on 01483 776868 or email her on wendyd@yoursanctuary.org.uk. Help us to help more families going through desperately difficult times.

We are biologically programmed to eat more in winter, shorter days signalled our ancestors to start stocking up because food would be scarce. Our survival mode still kicks in these days, only there is no shortage of calories and we can just pop to Sainsbury’s!

Try this to avoid the winter layers…

1. A diet low in carbs but high in protein and fats will reduce cravings & snacking. Remember the more processed food you eat, the more you will crave. Eat REAL FOOD! 2. Get out daily, a walk in nature will fight off winter blues and stop comfort eating. 3. Use hearty soups to fill you up for longer – veggie ones as starters and meaty ones for a lunch or light supper. 4. Get your workouts done early so you have less time to make excuses! Or, join BABEs and we will keep you accountable! 5. Think of low sugar comfort foods that will take the edge off, my fav’s are 85% dark choc and Greek yoghurt with berries and mixed seeds.

When Nigel Lewis-Baker MBE was diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer in 2004 his first reaction was to go out and buy a sports car! Well you would, wouldn’t you? Whenever I bump into Nigel, he has always “just” jumped out of a plane, published a book, walked the length of the country, worn a dress, organised a fundraising ball…. You get the picture. Nigel is an inspirational man who meets life, with cancer, full on! I have known Nigel for a number of years but have never had the pleasure of hearing him speak, so when he was due to go along to the Bookham Bees WI, I jumped at the chance. And I wasn’t disappointed. He explained in his own, very positive and upbeat way, how he was diagnosed, the journey of his treatment and all the side affects. He grew breasts, gained weight, lost energy, and has suffered many other adverse effects of the various treatments he has undergone. In 2007 when the radiation and hormone treatment started to fail, Nigel was offered a place on a 14 month clinical trial under the research team at Guildford. When the trial eneded in 2008 Nigel decided to stay with the research team and Professor Pandha, rather than return to the oncologist. Through the ups and downs of the various trials Nigel has suffered many side effects and setbacks,

but he keeps a positive outlook on life. In 2009 Nigel co-founded, with his friend John Blackburn, Topic of Cancer, as a local support group inviting other patients and their families to meet and share their cancer experiences. In 2013 it became a registered charity raising funds and awareness for immunothereapy research being carried out in Guildford under Professor Hardev Pandha. His tireless fundraising knows no bounds as you saw at the beginning of this article. Added to which he gives talks to anyone and everyone who will listen and not just our local WI’s. Nigel gives talks and interviews on radio, television, occasionally c a m p a i g n s parliament and has appealed to NICE for new treatments. He has spoke to the United Nations in New York and with the All Party Parliamentary Group in Westminster. In 2014 he was honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his work with Cancer patients. If you would like to find out more about Topic of Cancer and the work that they do go to: www.topicofcancer.org.uk My thanks go to Nigel Lewis-Baker for an interesting and informative evening that he delivered with honesty, humanity and a liberal sprinkling of humour.

contrasting pictures of HISTORIC LIFE IN OUR DISTRICT

Polesden Lacey in Mrs Greville's day Three radically different stories are coming up about life in our district during the first half of the last century for the monthly lecture series organised by the Leatherhead & District Local History Society. The talks, all scheduled at the Letherhead Institute on the third Friday of each month, will kick off on 19 October with A Study of Country House Services at Polesden Lacey. A team from the Industrial Heritage Group of Fetcham U3A (University of the Third Age) will outline the research they have carried out themselves on the historic utility services - water, electricity and communications enjoyed by Mrs Margaret Greville and her guests at the great house outside Mrs Greville. Bookham. She lived there from Edwardian days right up to the Second World War, inviting the great figures of the day, including royalty to experience Polesden’s sumptuous conditions. To quote Mrs Greville herself, these made ‘Polesden Lacey fit for a maharajah’. By contrast, the lecture on Friday, 16 November will present a very different experience as Evacuee Edith Tomkins

64 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - October 2018

authoress Alice Graysharp reveals what happened when her mother, Edith Tompkins, was evacuated to Leatherhead as a child during the Second World War. Alice’s talk is entitled Out of the Frying Pan and follows the recent publication of her book The Keeping of Secrets about a working class girl from London who experiences the shock of life in a then largely rural society while Britain endures bombings and massive social disruption.

Tropical House with Abraham Dixon 1883 The December meeting on the 7th will present three short talks still to be confirmed but coming up on 18th January, the history society’s Newsletter editor, Tony Matthews, will present the story of Cherkely Court and its extraordinary owners - Abraham Dixon, founder of the Letherhead Institute itself, Lord Beaverbrook, the highly controversial media magnate and politician, and subsequent events culminating in today’s exclusive luxury hotel. All of the talks start at 8pm in the Letherhead Institute in Leatherhead High Street with coffee Lord Beaverbrook served from 7.30pm. Entrance is just £2. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

OBITUARY: GOFF POWELL (1939 - 2018) Goff Powell, lifelong Leatherhead resident and one of the town’s best known historians, died on Monday, 20 August aged 79 at the Princess Alice Hospice. He leaves behind his widow Maureen and their two sons, David and Brian. His close friend and fellow historian Brian Hennegan writes this tribute. Godfrey David Powell was one of life’s gentlemen, softly spoken, of generous spirit and caring. He was born in Ashtead but by the outbreak of the Second World War the family had moved to Ryebrook Road, Leatherhead. His parents and his elder brother Tom came from the valleys of South Wales where their father had been a miner. Goff’s formative years were spent in a community that looked out for each other and the friendships that were forged there were to last a lifetime. He was educated at All Saints School and Leatherhead County Secondary School (long before Therfield was established.) Goff had an artistic gift and attended Epsom Art College. His first job was working for a commercial art studio in London and he hoped to establish a career in the art world. However, being a certain age he ‘took the Queen’s shilling’, or to be more accurate had the Queen’s shilling thrust upon him! He spent his national service in the Royal Army Medical corps and found himself involved in book- keeping and accounting. Returning to ‘civvy street’ Goff worked for a number of well known local firms in a financial capacity. He studied and gained book-keeping and accountancy qualifications and his last appointment was that

of an instructor in this field at Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation Training college. Goff had many hobbies and interests. The Scout movement was always close to his heart and as well as being a young scout himself he became a cub and scout-master, later serving as an assistant district commissioner for the Leatherhead District. He was made an Honorary Scouter and awarded the Silver Acorn for Distinguished Service. In all, he gave over 40 years of service to the movement. Football was also a passion and he followed ‘The Tanners’ for over 65 years, not just as a spectator but also playing competitively for many years. Popular music was another interest. Goff’s involvement with the Leatherhead & District Local History Society was well known. He served on the executive committee and was at one time sales secretary. For many years he was also a steward and member of the Friends of Leatherhead Museum. Over the years he amassed a comprehensive collection of postcards, not only of local interest but of a more general nature. His generosity in providing access to them for other authors was always gratefully appreciated and he was a member of the Surrey Postcard Collectors Club. Goff was always in demand as a speaker for many local clubs and societies. He was a prolific writer of books and articles for various publications numbering well over 100. His books included Up The Tanners, a personal history of Leatherhead Football Club; The Inns and Public Houses of Leatherhead & District; Over the Bridge the Southern Side; and Over the Other Bridge. We are all the poorer for Goff’s passing.

“Goff was such a nice man. When I first started out as a fledgling publisher over 12 years ago, Goff gave me so much support with the Ashtead & Leatherhead Local, giving me lots of excerpts from his Inns & Pubs of Leatherhead & District, then latterly, the local history page which was always so well received by readers. I loved his rather mischievous sense of humour and how much fun he wrung out of life. He was quite simply, the kindest person I knew. I, along with countless others I am sure, will miss him terribly.” Zen George

ASHTEAD W.I. SEPTEMBER MEETING REPORT After a few years absence, we have moved back into the main hall at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, to accommodate our growing number of members, and found it decorated with ‘Welcome Home’ banners! Our visit to Waddesden Manor in August was a great success and we have more outings and events to look forward to in the coming months, including a Christmas outing at the end of November. There was news from the Emlyn Downs group of W.I.s who also have some forthcoming events which we hope to attend. Our speaker this evening was Yvonne Saunders, with friend Joan and Joan’s Canine Partners dog Norman, a black Labrador. We learned about the Puppy Partners for the puppies’ early days, through to advanced training, in total costing £20,000, when dogs would be able to help with very many tasks, depending on the nature of their owner’s disability. They have to be used to many every-day sights and sounds which involves a lot of work for the dogs and their trainers. Dogs usually retire at 9 years, and if possible, stay with families, along with a newly trained dog. Unfortunately the waiting list for dogs is closed now, and many more puppy parents are needed to continue this much needed service. As always, we had news of our sub-groups, and monthly come-along lunch. At our next meeting the speaker will be John Stirling, ‘From Toy Town to Buckingham Palace’. Of course because of our increased space, we will be able to welcome many more visitors and new members on Wednesday 3rd October, 7.15 for 7.30. FROM SANDRA BROWN

FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. AUGUST REPORT Rather than seeing August as a holiday month a social evening was planned in the Rumble Room. We were delighted that so many of our members were able to attend, and the theme was a selection of favourite music from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. Many requests were played thanks to D.J. John Hawes resplendent in emerald green sequinned jacket. Snacks and refreshments at the half way stage were more a mini banquet, and the large servery was indispensable as a base for handing round plates of goodies to the adjacent tables. Committee member Anne and Secretary Sylvia were our very own ‘Pan’s People’ and you could see several of the ladies itching to get up and join them if only they could. Knit and natter and yoga classes are having a break until September, but diary noted and extremely popular was the scrumptious afternoon summer tea in Pat and Eric Weetman’s beautiful garden. This took place on the 15th and saw 25 members seated at tables in the muted sunshine. The committee meeting took place at the end of the month and a full programme was discussed. Tea and a plate of freshly baked cheese scones jostled with paperwork covering the table, but all was not well - Maureen had forgotten to rub in the margarine and later found it hiding on the worktop. The scones tasted o.k. and this of course led to an amusing chat relating to cooking disasters - really, even though we are the W.I.! Our next main meeting takes place on the 3rd October, we meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Rumble Room at Fetcham Village Hall. Do join in. Rosemary on 01372 376906 or Maureen on 01372 842498. MAUREEN WEBB

MOLE VALLEY W.I. AUGUST MEETING REPORT As members arrived at our August meeting carrying plates of food to share with others, the committee were busy making up jugs of Pimms. Meriel, our president, welcomed us all to the ‘Pimms and Picnic’ meeting. Following the business when details of forthcoming outings, quizzes, lunches and Surrey Federation meetings were given, members tucked into the delicious food and Pimms. After the ‘picnic’ we all joined in with a game to find ‘pairs’ - a fun activity trying to locate our paired partner. There was a great deal of chatter and laughter once a ‘pair’ had been found. Members enjoyed meeting and chatting to each other. Next month, read about our meeting on Tuesday 11th September at Fetcham Village Hall at 7.45pm when Dr Nicholas Henderson returned to speak about ‘Fulfilment and Farce - Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves’. Further details of our meetings and the smaller groups who meet between meetings can be found on our website http://www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk/ FROM LIZ WHITE

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Do PV panels still pay? In 2011, I wrote about the advantages of installing solar panels (photovoltaic (PV)) to generate electricity at home. As we come to the end of the Government subsidy scheme (it is proposed to close in March 2019), I thought it might be useful to review the subject again. In 2010 there were about 20,000 Domestic PV installations in the UK. By 2013, as a result of the subsidy scheme, this had risen to 420,000 and by 2018, it was 850,000 - way beyond the numbers originally envisaged and the reason why the incentives were progressively cut. So, is it still financially beneficial to retrofit PV on your home before the scheme ends? It certainly is environmentally. For those who invested in PV in 2011, each kWh generated now earns 52.75p; but for systems installed in 2018, they only get 3.93p per unit. For the electricity exported (assumed to be 50% of what is generated) newly installed domestic systems also receive 5.24p, so they get paid roughly 9p for each unit generated. With domestic electricity currently costing us about 15p per unit to buy and PV systems now costing about ÂŁ6000 to install, why should anyone consider investing before the deadline? Well installation cost has more than halved since 2010 and the efficiency of PV panels has increased by about 15%, so you get a lot more power for your buck. There are now new technology add-ons that allow you to use a lot more of your own power and thus buy less electricity from your energy company. These range from relatively expensive storage battery systems (so you can store your electricity for night-time use), through to cheapish devices that divert excess generated electricity that you would otherwise export, to an immersion heater in your hot water system. These devices let you to use well over half of your own generated electricity, whereas our experience is that without them we only use about a quarter of what we produce and have to buy the rest from the grid. Reading the blurb on the websites of companies that install PV (far fewer than there used to be) there is still said to be a potential 6 to 9% rate of return on capital on a house that meets basic energy efficiency criteria. The Which? website gives lower, less encouraging numbers. It all depends on the assumptions you make and our experience is that the Which? website is probably nearer the mark. However, the income generated is tax free and index linked for 20 years, so there are distinct long-term pluses, particularly in the light of the continued escalation of energy costs and uncertainties over fiscal policies post-Brexit. Financially the situation is now nowhere as clear cut as it was 2011, but with interest rates staying pretty low, these rates of return with low risks may still be of interest if you have the capital available. In the UK about 2500 people per month are currently installing new systems. However, with the deadline of March 2019 coming up, if you are thinking about it, then it is time to make a move. We do need more renewable energy in Mole Valley! Barrie Mould website: www.transitionashtead.org.uk email: info@transitionashtead.org.uk

Music in Hosptials & Care (MiHC)

Music in Hospitals & Care (MiHC) is a national charity and this year celebrates 70 years of creating joy through interactive live music for people receiving care or treatment in healthcare settings. MiHC organises annually some 5,000 live performances across the UK. Each music session is presented by small groups of professional musicians who have been carefully selected for their high standard of musicianship and communication skills. These qualities enable them to relate not just to the physical needs but also the psychological and social needs of their audience. Their encouraging and empathic approach can stimulate all the senses. The benefits of a live performance are immeasurable. A stroke patient unable to speak sings along to a familiar song. The child attached to a heart monitor whose heart rate begins to return to normal as she listens to her favourite song being sung by her bedside. Medical staff often tell us how patients blossom during a MiHC concert. It is wonderful to watch people who seem expressionless begin to sit upright, their heads lift and their eyes begin to smile. Music is the most emotive of the arts and has great therapeutic properties. It has the capacity of tuning into our deepest feelings as well as having the power

to break down social and cultural barriers. A live performance can help reduce levels of anxiety, pain and depression as well as providing a great socialising activity. MiHC musicians bring more than just music to their audiences. They help to promote wellbeing, improve memory recall and stem mental decline. They do not provide miracle cures but they sensitively help to ‘bring the person out of the patient.’ Do join us to celebrate our 70th birthday: • Sunday, 28th October 3.00pm MiHC’s 70th Birthday Celebration with Toby Spence (Tenor), Christopher Glynn (piano) and Orpheus Papafilippou (violin) with Rimantas Vingras (piano) at Hendall Manor Barns, Uckfield • Friday, 23 November 2.00pm “Cake and a Concert” at Riverhouse Barn, Walton-on-Thames Local carers, healthcare groups, care homes and people in the local community who otherwise feel isolated will be invited to enjoy high quality live music, dance, tea and cake together. • Tuesday, 4th December 7.30pm at Peace Memorial Hall, Ashtead– Soundbytes Choir, come along and enjoy songs from pop, gospels, musicals and more. Entrance free – donations to MiHC For further information please visit: www.mihc.org.uk

SLEEPING ON AN ARGUMENT Copyright Sarah Lott, September 2018

www.thememorybook.co.uk

sarah@thememorybook.co.uk | @thememorybook | facebook/thememorybook Ruth was having trouble sleeping. She’d argued with Sam and was still wallowing in her fury. She was fed up with bickering children and a husband who took her for granted. Turning away from him she stared at the wall, trying to calm herself down. Her mind was a torrent of frustration, her eyes darted under their lids and her legs twitched with restless impatience. Then the snoring started. The deep relaxed rumble of a man in the depths of a peaceful slumber. In that moment she felt a wave of irritation engulf her. How dare he sleep?! How dare he forget their argument so easily, be so selfish and insensitive and then fall into easy dreams, without a care in the world? She turned over to watch him. In the soft glow of the television standby button she could see his nostrils, gently flaring to the rhythm of a steady snore. He was still handsome but crows’ feet were now creeping from his eyes and grey hair was spreading from his temples. Sam was always so vibrant and spontaneous. Ruth remembered the delicious lurching of her stomach when she first knew him, the sparkle in his eyes and the private jokes they shared. Life was an adventure and they were keen to experience it to the full. They used to take long hikes together and backpacked around Europe. Even when Ben came along they still managed to go walking, their chuckling son bobbing in a baby carrier on Sam’s shoulders. When Daniel and Sarah were born, life grew complicated. Sam’s job became more demanding and a mundane routine took over. When Sarah started nursery, Ruth went back to work but never achieved the promotions she’d hoped for and the days passed in a flurry of multi-tasking. Ruth looked at her husband lying beside her and wondered what had happened. They didn’t have a bad marriage. She loved it when they were out with friends. He would smile with his eyes and send his

72 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - October 2018

love across the room. He adored his children and was enormously proud of their achievements. Sam could still make her laugh and they accepted each other’s quirky ways. They had years of shared memories, which would always bind them together. Ruth thought back to the argument earlier in the evening. Sam had been sitting at his laptop in the living room. He was wearing earphones and working on a presentation for the following day. Ruth was cooking the evening meal in the kitchen. All was calm until Daniel and Ben started arguing over a new Xbox game. Ben thumped his brother on the back and Daniel retaliated, just as Sarah was walking past. A piercing scream echoed round the house as she got walloped on the shoulder. Ruth raced from the kitchen to see what was going on. Sam continued to stare at his screen, resolutely ignoring the mayhem while Ruth berated her sons and tried to calm Sarah down. By the time she’d confiscated the Xbox, comforted her daughter and Shops & Services returned to her cooking, the chicken was burnt and the water in the potatoes had run dry, leaving an acrid smell hanging in the air. Sam tried to explain that he was under pressure to finish his work and that another person losing their temper would only have made things worse but Ruth was too caught up in her frustration at the spoilt supper. Ruth now looked again at Sam. His face was as familiar as her own. He was still a handsome man, in spite of the greying hair. In fact, it rather suited him. She could see now that the crow’s feet were actually laughter lines and his mouth was half curved into a smile, even in his sleep. He opened his eyes and gave his wife a sleepy kiss. “Are you ok darling? I’m sorry about earlier. I really had to finish that presentation. Don’t be cross with me.” He snuggled up to her in the bed. “Supper was great. I was in the mood for boiled eggs anyway...” 32

BOOK REVIEWS OCTOBER

‘Eastern Horizons’ by Levison Wood There is a pleasing contrast in lazing comfortably while reading the adventures of a writer who, when there is a choice, tends to take the dangerous road. Levison Wood’s hitch-hiking journey from the UK to India at the age of 22 took him across hard terrain and politically volatile territories. This makes for an exciting narrative against a shifting historical background, with stories from Alexander to the explorers of the Great Game, post-9/11 upheavals and the turbulence felt today. No country is entirely stable, and in Eastern Horizons the reader feels the tremors at ground level through encounters with refugees and at borders not open to all. This book is a reminder not to get too dug in to our comfort zone and to relish our freedom to travel. Shortlisted for the 2018 Edward Stanford Award.. ‘All Among the Barley’ by Melissa Harrison The Mather family have worked the 60 acres of arable land known as Wych Farm for over 100 years, but it is 1933 and the devastation of the Great War hangs like a pall over the country. 13 year old Edie Mather is bookish, dreamy and lonely when Constance FitzAllen arrives from London to document fading rural traditions. Constance worms her way into the small farming community and what initially seems a benign interest manifests itself as something altogether darker and more disturbing. Melissa Harrison excels at writing about the countryside and her writing is reminiscent of Thomas Hardy. ‘After the Party’ by Cressida Connolly We first met Phyllis Forrester in prison, although for a long time it is not clear what she has done. The book then takes us back to when Phyllis and her children return from overseas and join her sister in a summer camp for ‘peace work’, which turns out to be a smokescreen for promoting fascist ideology. Phyllis and her family find themselves subsumed into the sinister world of Sir Oswald Mosley. This is a wellwritten novel and ideal for readers looking for something a little different.

CREATING SEATING SPACES BY SELINA BOTHAM

RHS Award winning designer Selina Botham of Designs for all Seasons discusses how to create that perfect seating space in your garden. Purpose - Think carefully about the purpose of your seating area. A large dining space will be great for entertaining, but not so good for an intimate supper for two, so its important to work out exactly what you do want and design according to your own specific needs. Don’t block important routes or views from your house with bulky furniture otherwise your seating space can create a barrier to the rest of the garden and you’ll wonder why you never seem to venture out into your garden. A secondary seating area will create another destination and encourage you to explore your garden. Consider if this will be a smaller dining space or a bench or sun loungers or even a hammock. A seating place can be a perch to just sit and momentarily enjoy an experience or a view, or it can be a comfortable place which involves you reclining and relaxing for a while. Everyone is different and so its important to work out what you want and need. Place - Often flexibility is needed and it’s a good idea to create seating spaces in different parts of the garden for use at different times of the day or in different seasons. Somewhere facing the morning sun will be lovely for morning coffee on a spring day and this can then double

82 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - October 2018

up as a shady spot in the afternoon in a heat wave. Think of the seasons too and how you could make the most of your garden all year round. It can be so nice to have somewhere sheltered to sit outside on a sunny winters day. I’ve had clients with beautiful greenhouses who use them in the winter as somewhere to sit and enjoy the winter sun. Atmosphere - The atmosphere of a seating place is affected by factors including its size, position, the materials used and also the adjoining planting. Lighting is also key so that you can use your seating spaces at night. Think about the atmosphere you want and design the seating spaces accordingly. A seating space always feels safer and more cosy if you have a backdrop of planting or a wall. Getting the seating spaces right in your garden is a key part of the whole design and if you need some help do consult a garden designer as a fresh pair of eyes and someone to help you work out what you want can be helpful for you. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Surrey. If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk, facebook Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons or Instagram @designsforallseasons

TO “TRICK OR TREAT” OR NOT??

However unpredictable the British weather can be, there are always some events that come around every year including, of course, Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night. No one should need to be reminded about basic personal safety if you are planning to be out and about to celebrate either or both events but I would like to make sure that everyone is aware that some people find “Trick or Treating”, in particular, not so welcome!! Some of the older and more vulnerable people in our communities do not like to answer their doors after dark. It can make them feel vulnerable and anxious. Of course, that doesn’t mean that all people feel like this but it’s worth remembering that, if a person doesn’t answer their door there may well be a very good reason? In recent years, many households indicate that they are happy to be visited by putting out a pumpkin lantern outside their front doors but not everyone does this, so it’s worth bearing that in mind. This is also a time of year when we generally see

an increase in “cold callers” offering to do household maintenance work for a cash payment. This preys on people’s concerns that, perhaps, their guttering might leak or some roof tiles may let in the rain over winter. Please do not ever commit to having work like this done by someone you don’t know. It may well be a perfectly genuine offer but, quite often, the job turns out not to be necessary and the amount being charged can be extortionate! You actually live in a “No Cold Calling” area and should not be bothered by this type of activity but it does still happen, so if you are not sure – please don’t open the door!!! On a totally different subject, as the days start to draw in, please remember to try to make your home look occupied if you are not going to be there during the evening. Using a few simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern, to indicate movement throughout your home, can help significantly in deterring opportunistic burglaries. The most simple timers are relatively inexpensive and are really worth the small investment to help make your home safer.

LEATHERHEAD

You’ll find rhythm and rhyme at Leatherhead Library, open Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am – 5pm Did you know...Babies and toddlers can join the library and take out books on their own ‘Pebble’ library card?

We also hold two half-hour sessions of ‘Rhymetime’ for this age-group every Thursday, at 10am and 11am. If weekdays aren’t convenient then we hold extra ‘Family Rhymetimes’ on the second and fourth Saturdays in the month at 11am. These are all free to attend but do arrive in good time to ensure your place. October 4th is National Poetry Day…You might wish to re-live your own school days and take a look at the collection of “Poems to Learn by Heart” by Ana Sampson. We have poetry for every occasion, both traditional and modern. “The Bees” is a collection written by the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. e-News…If you feel you are being left behind in the digital age, then you might like to register for our ‘Get Online’ event on Friday 19th October.
