We are delighted to report, that once again we have the honour of being the winners of a Corporate Live Wire Innovation and Excellence Award for Lifestyle Magazine of the year! It’s been a really tough year for all businesses, including us, so to win this award during a world wide pandemic is especially appreciated by us all at Surrey Hills Publishing Ltd. We are a very small team of three and it is wonderful to know our efforts and hard work have not gone unnoticed. We are, of course, very lucky to produce our magazines in such wonderful communities, and for that, we thank you, our readers, for making our magazines what they are. Without your amazing sense of community and contributions we would not be winners! So this award is for us all. Here’s to moving forward, and into better times! Lots to read about this month, including an interesting little feature from the local history group of Leatherhead U3A, which includes some facts and figures you may find surprising! You don’t need to be a history buff to find this fascinating. I’m sure similar data is reflected across the country as a whole, but it is especially interesting when it’s local. I wonder if nowadays there are more ‘Vape’ shops than there used to be ‘lighter repair’ shops? It’s great to include news from The Leatherhead Theatre Art Galley as well this month; they are now able to beam a wonderful selection of local art directly to a computer screen near you! Their virtual gallery is now running exhibitions for your enjoyment! Do see page 26 for more information on this. I hope you like the look of our recipe this month! It comes to us from a delightful new book by local lady, Ozlem Warren; Ozlem revisits her Turkish roots within it’s pages. In other news, we share information on The Green House Project which will hopefully provide local scouting groups with a much needed new centre in Fetcham. Please see how you can help them to reach their goal on page 44. As well as all this we have contributions from a lovely new Charity called Breaking Bread, also from many other local groups & organisations. It’s slowly starting to feel like the local area we know and love! Keep well, get your vaccine, wear a mask and eat some chocolate Happy Easter to you all! (not necessarily in that order!)

Lifetime Gifting by Attorneys and Deputies If you have been appointed as a property and financial affairs deputy, or if you are acting as an attorney under a property and financial affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for a relative or friend (known as the donor), you will realise fairly soon that this can be a challenging and time-consuming role. There are many things to consider when looking after someone else’s money. You may be considering making gifts of the donor’s money to family members, friends, charities, or possibly to yourself. There may be a number of reasons for considering gifts - it may be something the donor would have wanted to do, had they retained the ability to manage their affairs, or a gift perhaps contemplated to try and save inheritance tax payable on the donor’s estate. Permission to make a gift It is important to understand that if you are acting as an attorney or deputy, you do not automatically have authority to make gifts from the assets of the relevant individuals. If unauthorised gifts are made by an attorney, these may well be investigated at a later date by the Office of the Public Guardian. Attorneys can be ordered to produce an account of their dealings with the donor’s money and to explain the reasons for making the gifts. Attorneys may be ordered to pay the money back or, in some cases, an attorney can be removed and an independent deputy appointed by the court. HMRC also asks for details of gifts made by a deceased person, a copy of a power of attorney and whether court authorisation was obtained for the gift. The law relating to gifting by an attorney As an attorney, you have limited powers to make gifts of the donor’s money. An attorney can make gifts to friends and family of the donor on particular
occasions, such as Christmas or birthdays. The gifts should be reasonable in terms of size, taking into account the donor’s resources and all other relevant circumstances, such as income and anticipated outgoings. If the proposed gift is larger in size relative to the donor’s estate, or if it is not of a seasonal nature, then the attorney should apply to the Court of Protection for authority to make the gift. The Court of Protection has powers to safeguard vulnerable and incapacitated individuals, and to make decisions for those individuals. The Court of Protection also ensures that any decisions made on behalf of an incapacitated person are in that person’s best interests. If you are a court-appointed deputy, your powers are set out in the deputyship order. Typically, the authority of the deputy is similar in scope to that of an attorney. It is usual to apply for authority to make gifts of the donor’s money. In reaching any decision on authorisation of a gift, the court will look at all relevant circumstances before reaching a decision. This month Buy to Let Hunter are chatting to a client who uses his investment properties to finance his retirement: Paul was busy running his own fire safety business and never intended to become a landlord, but when his son went to uni Paul found his digs woefully lacking. “I borrowed money against the business and bought an old terraced house.” His little darling moved in whilst Daddy, in his spare time, did the place up, soon enabling more students to move in. It then dawned on Paul that he was making money on the student rentals, so he decided to cut his losses, focus on the Southampton lets and sold up the fire biz. But, as he became more (ahem) senior and less keen on being a landlord, Paul changed tack, sold all the student lets and invested in something more conventional: a cottage by the sea. “When I first bought it I just loved it, always imagining we would live there – a short walk to the town or beach and just a bike ride to the New Forest.” Paul took this new project on with gusto, with visions of his imminent retirement with his lovely wife, Pauline. But, once finished, Paul wasn’t ready to retire, so he handed the management of his perfect “holiday home” over to Buy to Let Hunter.
cottage became fantastically desirable. “Now I am converting the old art studio in the garden to a Summer house.” After a discussion with the BTLH team it seemed a no-brainer to make the small investment to get an even greater return. BTLH can help you find the perfect holiday home, too. Whether it is a place for your own retirement one day, or to use in the meantime in conjunction with renting out or if it is dedicated to guests is totally up to you. But staycations have never been more popular, so if you have been toying with the idea, the time may be now. And Paul’s plans for the future? “I’m too happy where I live now, too entrenched in a fabulous community and frankly too busy to retire!” laughed Paul – but it is nice to know the perfect bolt hole is there waiting for them should they make the decision to pick up their bucket and spade and go fossicking on the beach. In the meantime, Paul just cashes his cheques and plans his next holiday. Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
16th Annual Ashtead Spring Clean Saturday 17th April Last year’s Spring Clean was cancelled at the last minute as it was scheduled to take place just days after lockdown began on 23rd March. This year, we intend to get out there and clean up our village. We are aware that the verges of surrounding main roads are a disgrace but, not only are they beyond our remit, on safety grounds litter-picking can only take place on these very busy roads when Surrey Highways closes them for other Highways’ work. Within Ashtead, a small army of local residents usually pick up litter as they are out and about but, understandably, there has been a reluctance to do this during the pandemic. We are hoping that the combination of vaccinations and the slight easing of lockdown rules by April 17th will mean that residents will feel able to join in with this year’s Spring Clean, either by joining in one of our organised groups or in their own roads. This year’s litter pick will require observance of Covid guidance: • When you arrive at a meeting point, please remain socially distanced as you wait to receive the litterpicking equipment. • We will provide litter pickers, which we will clean before handing them to you. • We will provide Hi-Viz vests and will ensure they have not been touched for 3 weeks prior to the Spring Clean. • Please bring your own MASK for use while you are at the meeting point and collecting and returning your equipment. • Hand sanitisers and cleaning equipment will be available at the meeting point. Spring Clean near your home The verges do still get mown but the cuttings are left behind and compost down nicely to make a perfect medium for weeds. So, instead of joining the general litter-pick, perhaps you can work with your 12 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2021
neighbours in your own road to clean and tidy the verges and gutters, clean the road sign and cut back any foliage obstructing the pavement. Please let us know if you are planning your own local spring clean. Report It - We also need you to be our “eyes” and note and report the location of graffiti at graffiti@ ashteadresidents.org.uk. Please also report any barriers or signs left behind after road works by visiting our website and clicking on “Report It” in the Quick Links section on the home page. JOIN A LITTER PICKING GROUP on 17th APRIL at 10:00am Please go to one of the meeting points below where an ARA Committee member or Local Ashtead Independent Councillor will meet and brief you and issue the litter-picking equipment. • Ashtead Station car park • Outside the Football Club, near the pond • Outside The Greville Primary School in Stonny Croft • The corner of Barnett Wood Lane and West Farm Avenue • Outside St Andrew’s School in Grange Road • The corner of Craddocks Avenue and the A24 • Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, near the side door For all litter-picking activity, please wear boots or strong shoes and, in addition to your mask, please bring thick protective gloves. Black rubbish bags will be provided to you and then collected from each area and brought back to the APMH car park. If you are working in the centre of the Village, please bring your bag back with you to the recycling area of the APMH car park. Please put the date in your diary now: Saturday morning, 10am, April 17th. If you have any queries or comments, please email springclean@ ashteadresidents.org.uk or call 273393. FUTURE OF FETCHAM SPRINGS - It was very welcome to hear the assurance from SES Water in February that it has no plans for residential or commercial use of the land at Fetcham Springs. But at the same meeting, the company shared outline plans with the FRA which could mean quite major changes to the site, subject to the usual planning consents. It now appears that as companies everywhere are being compelled to reduce their carbon footprints, the land has taken on a new value to SES. By installing solar panels, and creating a renewable power source, the company can utilise the considerable acreage at Fetcham Springs to help it meet its net-zero carbon target. Most of us are probably unaware that because of extensive pumping operations, the water industry is a heavy user of power. So traditional water company land holdings, surrounding extraction points such as Fetcham Springs, have taken on a new significance. So what are residents, who are also likely to be SES customers, meant to think about this? The company has outlined plans for the creation of an
education centre on the land, and is keen to promote biodiversity, on a site which on the face of it has considerable wildlife potential. SES is also interested to know if residents would like improved access to the site. VIRTUAL AGM - Because the future of Fetcham Springs raises so many questions, the FRA is pleased that a senior SES representative has agreed to attend our virtual AGM on Monday April 26th at 7.30pm. We will be circulating joining instructions for the meeting to our subscribers, and on our website, nearer to the time. SUBSCRIPTIONS - Speaking of subscribers, it is that time of year again when we ask you to join us, or renew your membership. Fetcham Springs is just one of many important issues we are involved in on Fetcham’s behalf. So we need and value your support more than ever. Please visit www.fetchamresidents.co.uk or use the printed form below to renew. Our subscription year runs from April 1st.

Shopping in Leatherhead 1911 TO PRESENT DAY
The local history group of Leatherhead U3A have been looking into how Leatherhead shops have changed since the early years of the last century. We have used records between 1911 and 2019 and compared them. The survey covers the four streets radiating out from the centre-High Street, Church Street, Bridge Street
and North Street and included the Swan Centre. It should also be noted that the population of the town has grown from around 5500 in 1911 to over 11000 in 2019. This obviously added to the pressure on the town shops to try and cope with the increased numbers; hence the growth of the supermarkets. This is probably the same throughout the country. This is not an exact science because shops change in nomenclature and usage. For example, in 1911 there was a shop described as Chemist and Stationers, and in 1952 there was a cigarette lighter repair shop. Other examples are the demise of the shoe shops (8 in 1911) and now only one shoe repairer; butchers and greengrocers have disappeared completely, being replaced by the supermarkets and “on line shopping”. Interestingly the number of shops has increased from 104 in 1911 to 117 in 2019. The peak number of retail outlets was between 1972 and 1995 when there were 138 shops. Most people are familiar with the big changes. Charity shops grew up in the 90’s and are now dominant. Eating places have increased from 6 in 1934 to 22 today, reflecting the growth of eating out generally, an hotel in the High Street that does not sell food, and the increase in “out of town” offices who “bus” their workers in for lunch, sandwiches, etc. Some changes are less easily explained than others. For 20 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2021
example, why the decline in shoe shops to none today? Probably the most significant changes in shopping over the period are the growth of supermarkets and the development of on-line shopping. There has been a profound social change from 1911, when many women shopped daily, to the shopping today, either in weekly supermarket trips or on-line shopping. Another interesting change is the reduction of the number of doctors in the High Street and surrounding roads. This marks a move form the individual premises/surgeries in the town to out of town medical centres. In line with the modern fashion, the number of hairdressers (male & female) has increased from to in 1911 to 7 in 2019. Banks, building societies and estate agents had steadily grown until a reduction in the number of banks in the 2019 survey. This reflects mergers and the move away from branch activity with more emphasis on “on-line” banking. It is sad to see that some of the old traditional outlets such as blacksmith, ironmongers/hardware, tailors and even florists are now absent from the town.
This is a work in progress and we look forward to understanding more about our changing shopping landscape*. We have not included the development of Leatherhead Theatre, which is a story in itself. In our research we have used a number of various sources which include; Local directories, Goad maps, Ordnance Survey maps and local knowledge. David Wall & Mike Essex for the Local History Group. Feb 2020.
*The pandemic has increased online shopping at the same time as driving the desire to shop locally. Only time will tell what the longterm effects on our High Streets will be.

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

SEE YOU SOON...
We appreciate that this is a frequent holiday time chant, but its also very appropriate considering the last 13 months or so we have all been through. It is anticipated that from Monday 12th April we will be able to open our doors for general browsing and instore support. It will be great to return to a life we once knew. We look forward to seeing you then. Over the last 13 months we have been in close dialogue with many of our suppliers who have provided us with preferential supplies of equipment, when there were acute shortages generally, but there is an expectation that product shortages will continue maybe until Christmas 21, so be warned! Products which will continue to be in constrained supply are; tablets, laptops, graphics cards, printers and home networking products. We aim to maintain stock of these products, but demand is outstripping supply. Please call us to discuss your needs.
Preserving Memories…
We have seen a huge increase in the demand to have your memories saved and converted onto new media. This could be the conversion of video tapes onto DVD or into MP4 files for viewing on your smart TV, iPad or computer. So if you have any tapes or discs that you would like converted we are very happy to help. Also, in a similar light, we have converted many photo’s into digital form, again to make you memories more accessible and easier to share. Please ask for further details
Security- Password help…
Over the next few editions we will be running a series of articles on Security and how to improve/maintain the security for your setup and accounts in general. To login to a website or online account, most providers require a unique user name and password combination to identify its really you, in addition to this they may offer you the ability to use Multi Factor Authentication. This is often referred to as MFA or 2FA. Essentially this involves sending you a code or email to a secondary account or device, to assist in account verification. If you are offered this option, we would recommend you use it as it can enhance the security to your account and sometimes decrease the dependency on remembering the account password! Whilst we are on the subject of passwords, we are constantly being told not to use the same password for all accounts, but then this gives you a further headache of having to remember all the different passwords you have used. To help you with this you might find using a variable and a static piece of information will help you stay safe. To explain further - let’s say your Mum’s maiden named is “smith”. You could modify this surname to be the constant suffix of your password. So let’s change it to 5m1t4, so that this will always be the suffix of your password. Then you combine this with the first three letters of the website you are using, meaning your eBay password becomes eBa~5m1t4. Using this “code” will safely allow you to make a note of the password as being “eBa~mum”. You will know what this means, but no one else will.

ART GALLERY GOES VIRTUAL
The Leatherhead theatre has launched its monthly art exhibitions with a difference. The Gallery, previously showcasing artwork on the Theatre’s foyer and mezzanine walls, now takes on a virtual twist and features an array of talented artists from across Surrey and the local area. The artwork is displayed in a virtual 3D gallery and comprises of set pieces which vary in genre and inspiration. Curated by Gallery Coordinator, Emma, the exhibitions are free to view and are borne from the desire to support both local artists and our community theatre, one of the many theatres that has been hit hard during the Covid19 lockdown period. The Leatherhead Theatre Online Gallery offers an innovative approach to viewing artwork during the COVID Crisis. Visitors are welcome to view the gallery at their own pace, in the comfort of their own home, 24/7. Access to the gallery exhibitions can be found on the Leatherhead Theatre Art Gallery Facebook page: FB@LheadTheatreART and the option to visit previous exhibitions is also available through the site. Gallery Co-ordinator: Emma White explains “Whilst this cannot entirely replace exhibiting in realspace, we can offer a truly novel experience.” Emma added “Due to the current public health situation we feel positively motivated to offer an innovative solution by promoting both the work of local artists and The Leatherhead Theatre in a way that is easy to navigate and negates the need for social distancing.”
Our current exhibition – ‘Equinox’ runs from the 10th March to the 7th April 2021, followed by our Easter Exhibition, due to launch on 8th April. The Exhibitions are open to the public and free to view with all artwork available for sale with 20% commission to The Leatherhead Theatre. To purchase an artwork or to enquire about exhibiting with us or getting involved, please contact emma@the-theatre.org. The Leatherhead Theatre Art Gallery welcomes artists from all backgrounds and genres to submit their artwork for consideration.

Zesty semolina sponge cake in syrup Revani This months delicious recipe comes from a book by local lady Ozlem Warren called
‘Özlem’s Turkish Table’ It’s a stunning book filled with a wonderful array of mouth watering traditional family recipes and it is available from Amazon or online at: www.gbpublishing.co.uk/ ozlemsturkishtable (link includes a 25% discount on a signed book when you buy Ozlem’s embroidered Turkish Table apron).
Ingredients (Serves 6-8) 165g/6oz coarse semolina 200g/7oz sugar 45ml/3 tablespoons all-purpose/ plain flour 5ml/1 teaspoon baking powder 225g/8oz plain whole milk yoghurt 3 medium eggs, beaten 60ml/4 tablespoons light olive oil 10ml/2 teaspoons vanilla extract Zest of 1 lemon Juice of ½ lemon
Method
Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 First make the syrup, as it needs to cool down. Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan at a medium heat. Stir and bring the mixture to the boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to low and let the syrup simmer for about 10 minutes, uncovered. Add the lemon juice, mix well and simmer for another 5 minutes. Turn the heat off and let the syrup cool down while you make the semolina cake.
For the syrup:
Grease a square or rectangular baking dish 8in x 10in/20cm x 27cm with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Beat the eggs and combine with the sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat and combine well for a few minutes, until the sugar dissolves. Then add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil, yoghurt, semolina, flour, the baking powder and beat well. Stir in the vanilla extract, lemon juice and lemon zest and mix well until you have a smooth batter. Pour the batter into the greased baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, until the cake is golden brown. To check; insert a toothpick into the centre of the cake, if it comes out clean, that means the cake is cooked. If not, bake for another 3-5 minutes.
300g/10 ½ oz sugar 360ml/12fl oz water Juice of ½ lemon Ground pistachio nuts and desiccated coconut to serve
Using a large spoon, drizzle the cooled syrup all over the semolina cake. Let the cake absorb the syrup and cool down. Once cool, cut the Revani in square or diamond shapes; you can serve Revani with ground pistachio and desiccated coconut over the top like we do back home.

Easter holiday fun with the kids
I’m sure most parents are more than a little fed up with hearing the phrase ‘I’m bored….’ It’s been a difficult year for most of us, especially children/teens who have desperately missed their usual socialising at school and in their free time. Parents have tried their best to try to keep their spirits up by keeping them busy, but a whole year of coming up with new ideas can be a little draining for even the most inventive individuals. Here are a few ideas that you can try over the Easter break! 1. TakE a vIrTuaL TrIp – a number of museums, zoos and other organisations are offering virtual tours, one of our favourites is the Johnson Space Center – Boeing leads the tour through the Houston, Texas facility, covering the history and future of aerospace innovation. Have a search online for some interesting tours, most of which are free of charge. 2. pLay comE dInE wITH mE – ideal with teens, firstly decide on your teams and a prize for the winner(s), each team can then decide on a theme for their evening and create menus. You may want to record the preparation, the meals, and any entertainment, to show to friends or grandparents. At the end of each teams meal the guests score the chef out of 10, the scoring is kept secret – put score cards into labelled envelopes until the big reveal at the end.
5. gET crafTy – Easter gives us a whole host of new craft projects that can be undertaken, pompom chicks, egg cress men, egg decorating, easter bunnies, easter bonnets and cards. The list is almost endless and will provide hours of fun to both little and older children. If you can’t face the mess, then wait for a dry day and take the activities out into the garden. 6. BuILd a dEn – all you need is a large blanket, some sheets, and cushions. This is a fun activity for little ones to play indoors or outdoors and should keep them occupied for a little while. 7. pLay Board gamEs onLInE wITH famILy or frIEnds – play Monopoly online (available on iOS and Android – for a small fee) it has an online multiplayer mode that lets you play private games with another household. Get the app to play Uno or The Risk: Global Domination, free on both iOS and Android. 8. HosT a pampEr day – we all love a pamper day in our house, put your dressing gowns on and indulge. Light some candles, put soothing music on, make homemade face packs and scrubs, soak your feet in warm scented water and treat each other to a hand massage, manicure or pedicure for a real treat!
3. pLan an EasTEr Egg HunT – look online for inspiration for cryptic clues or novel suggestions for your hunt, 9. makE a TImE capsuLE – include things that you could also set up some fun you have done during lockdown, such as crafts, letters, activities such as a hula hoop pictures, thoughts etc. You could collate a scrapbook competition, egg and spoon together with pictures and memories from what you’ve To place anbunny advert therace, Directory telephone: 01443 race, hopinsack pin got up to and how you 204399 felt throughout the past 12 the tail on the rabbit or egg toss. months.

HOW TWISTED ARE YOU? Many people notice that one shoulder is higher than another, or that their hip on one side is lower than the other. This can sometimes be due to a ‘twist’ in the spine called a ‘Scoliosis’. Many people have a scoliosis and it doesn’t bother them at all, however others have niggles and aches in various places around the body and wonder why. When your spine is in line, and working at its best, you don’t tend to feel any sensations anywhere in your body, and are able to perform the tasks you need to on a daily basis. Scoliosis can affect small kids as well as adults, getting kids checked is really important to prevent future problems.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Building Back Greener “Build back Better” has become a trendy buzz-phrase. “Better” is very vague, so let’s twist it and talk about building back greener. Covid-19 has forced unimaginable changes in the behaviour of people and governments - drastic changes have been accepted as necessary. Many have suffered great hardship, notably those working in frontline services as well as those dealing with bereavement or loss of livelihood - but as a positive we now have a chance to build back greener - the climate crisis hasn’t gone away, and that’s just the worst of the many environmental challenges we face. However there are, unusually, two really good pieces of news on the climate front. Firstly, as we’ve seen, we - the world - the British people - Ashtead and Leatherhead residents - have all made these huge changes in our lifestyles: so it’s reasonable to assume that further equally big - and rapid - changes are possible in ways that we couldn’t conceive of back in 2019. And secondly, the climate science community have made a seismic shift in their forecasts. Namely they now think that if/when greenhouse-gas emissions decline to net zero, the warming process will stop very soon after, whereas until recently it was believed that warming would continue for several decades or more after stopping emissions. Many in the field were afraid to say how dire the situation really was. “Net zero” here means that there will be some remaining emissions, which will be balanced by CO2 absorption measures. Over twenty governments as well as the EU are now legally committed to net zero by a specific date. So where does that leave us? Still in an awful mess but with escape routes. Does this mean that we can pay a bit less attention to Climate Change? Absolutely not - it’s the reverse, but a good outcome is now realistically possible. So, it’s become even more important for all environmentally-aware people and organisations to work their socks off and reduce their own climate impact and that of everyone that they can influence - individuals, national governments, local governments, companies, trades unions, NGOs etc. All need to urgently make big changes. Personally, I’ll travel a lot less - often Zooming instead. Going to London will become an occasional luxury, as will foreign travel, by train or ferry, or conceivably in my electric car (I haven’t flown for ages). And why not set a net zero target for your family or household - the website familyclimateemergency.net can help. Whether your thing is greening the local road verges or greening your political party - any of them - get on and do it. Review and improve the insulation of your home. Walk or cycle everywhere you can. Enjoy safaris on YouTube, not in Kenya. Get an electric bike or an electric car - the recharging industry is expanding rapidly and at last moving towards standardisation. Even the Daily Express is joining in. See its Feb 8th issue or Google “Time for a Green Britain”. They’re campaigning for a cut in VAT rates on climate-friendly activities. Whatever you do, you’ll be helping build back a greener and more optimistic future! mole valley W.I. march report Our president welcomed 44 members to our regular monthly meeting. One of our gardening clubs is still holding online meetings. Eight gardening club members have spent several weeks in groups of two working hard clearing and preparing the ground on the Eastwick allotment. They are hoping to start planting soon. Rambling is hoping to start at the end of the month if restrictions allow. Our speaker, Debbie Lewington, by the wonders of Zoom spoke to us from her home in Spain where among other interests she is passionate about Flamenco dancing. Debbie left her banking career after twenty years to pursue a career in complimentary medicine. Her talk was entitled Iridology (the science of the eyes). Debbie explained that complimentary medicine comes under a huge umbrella and encompasses nutrition, massage, reflexology and many others. It has roots in traditional knowledge of herbs, vegetables and fruit. Debbie was keen for us to look to self-care which is even more important in our current world. Debbie explained that the eyes have certain characteristics that can map body parts and therefore can indicate health issues. June Webb

Visit our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk for details of our lectures, visits, and tours.
Let’s hope that the Government’s “Roadmap” will allow a return to something approaching normality. We are a thriving society with a membership of 250, providing stimulating arts-related talks, visits to places of interest, cultural tours and special events. Normally our talks have taken place on the 3rd Tuesday morning of each month at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, and we are looking forward to the time when that can be resumed. Throughout the three lockdowns we have been keeping in touch with our members through regular newsletters, by email or hand-delivery for those without that facility. Since last July, using the Zoom app, we have been screening monthly online talks, as well as providing access to some “virtual tours“ of places of interest. These were enjoyed by many of our members onscreen in the comfort of their own homes. Immerse yourself in the amazing history of Roman North Africa, as our online talk on Tuesday 20th April 2021 (at 10.30) will be:
Leptis Magna & Cyrene: Cities of the Sands We welcome visitors and new members, who, for a fee of £5, can join in an online talk by sending a request by email to tas.ashtead@gmail.com.
LEATHERHEAD
WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL 2021 AT 7.30PM We are delighted to be presenting a talk on Zoom by Julia Musgrave entitled ‘Caravaggio; Murderer or Genius?’ In the sixteenth century, Caravaggio’s style spread across Europe and gave rise to the international movement known as ‘Caravaggism’. Yet for many, Caravaggio is famed as much for his criminal record as for his art. Was it the violence of his times or his own violent spirit that inspired the dramatic lighting and intense naturalism of his work? 450 years after his death, this lecture follows the dramatic incidents of the artist’s life and looks at why and how his influence spread so far. Guests are welcome - if you would like to attend this talk, please contact Huw by email on theartssocietyleatherhead@gmail.com

Book Reviews APRIL 2021 ‘The Survivors’ by Jane Harper (Hardback £14.99) Jane Harper’s latest novel is set in the Tasmanian beach community of Evelyn Bay, a place that only comes alive during the summer. The title refers to a shipwreck. Kieran, who feels responsible for two deaths, including that of his brother in a fatal storm 12 years earlier, returns to help his mother move house. When the body of a woman is found on the beach, people start wondering if this is somehow connected to the earlier tragedies. Another great crime mystery and a compelling story of guilt and grief.
‘The Bass Rock’ by Evie Wyld (Hardback £16.99) In her first two novels, After the Fire, A Still Small Voice and All the Birds, Singing, both set in Australia and England, Evie Wyld wrote with the some intensity about toxic masculinity and emotional damage. Her latest novel The Bass Rock is set in Scotland and the action occurs across three time frames, while connecting to the themes of her previous work. The book is divided into several parts, each stepping from Vivian to Ruth to Sarah and then forwards into the future. The elegant structure of the novel and the delicate links between the three narrative threads lead, inevitably, to challenging reading, but as always with Evie Wyld this is a fascinating, well constructed novel well worth the effort.
‘Cunning Women’ by Elizabeth Lee (Hardback £14.99) In 1620s Lancashire the Haworth family are outcasts, dwelling beyond the village. A mother with an unruly son, conflicted daughter Sarah, and little Annie, the youngest of all. Many respectable villagers seek them out for plant medicine, while others require the kind of cunning aid that some would describe as witchcraft. As young Sarah Haworth grows into her gift and learns from her mother, she finds herself tempted not only by the strength of her power but also her longing for a normal life away from hunger and fear. This debut novel full of history, herblore, suspense and romance is published on 22nd April. 50 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2021

Supporting Ashtead and Leatherhead locals through the pandemic
We are a group of Ashtead residents sharing our gifts with other people in our community who need a bit of support right now. This all started a little bit by chance after a walk on the common. We talked about how we felt the need to reach out to other people in the community and be able to build relationships and support people who are going through a tough time. We talked about the frustration of wanting to make a difference and actually not doing much. One of our husbands is a chef and has many skills he could use to bless the community. We decided at that point that by joining our families’ skills together, maybe we could cook meals for families once a week and deliver them. We have now been cooking over 80 meals for over 20 families once a week. We have a rota of recipes and we cook the same meal for all the families each week. Our chef has kindly written out these recipes, which are straight forward and contain all the details of the ingredients and methods needed to cook a lovely home cooked dinner for these families. Our vision is that by cooking meals for people, we can build bridges with families who are struggling 56 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2021
in the community and show them love by doing so. Baked cakes provide that extra bit of love! More recently we’ve been able to fund an additional bag of groceries for every family each week as a result of raising enough money through a ‘gofundme’ fundraising drive. Our target is to reach £5,000 so that we can continue to provide these extra groceries throughout the remainder of this pandemic. We need to raise another £1,500 to reach our goal and keep these groceries going to the families. We’ve received a lot of very positive feedback about our work, not only from those families we support in the community but also from the volunteer families themselves. It’s given us a wonderful sense of purpose and there has been a real joy in giving. Please support us by either joining our team or helping financially by visiting: www.gofundme.com/breaking-bread-christmas

Bookham Wine Club
A virtual wine tour of the Loire Valley with Lits Philippou … During March and with the aid of Zoom, members enjoyed the delights of the Loire Valley from the comfort of their own homes. Lits, one of the club’s most popular presenters provided a magical and revealing tour of the region with a gallery of fascinating slides and a fact filled narrative. Before setting off, members were provided with a short list of wines to purchase and enjoy during the presentation. A Muscadet or a Pouilly Fume for white, and a Cabernet Franc from the Chinon/Saumer region for the red. The Loire Valley is UNESCO’s largest World Heritage Site and also France’s most diverse wine region in terms of terroir. Our trip took us along the 1,000km length of the Loire river from its estuary on the Atlantic coast to its source in Central France, where we discovered superb, diverse wines along the way. Plus views of the lush countryside sprinkled with fairy tale chateaux and grand Renaissance-era castles that tourists can visit. 58 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2021
While Zoom is not popular with everyone, it is a timely solution for members who wish to keep connected and entertained, and so it was for our evening with Lits. A further Zoom evening will be held in April with Heather Dougherty talking about the wines of Northern Rhone. Thereafter, it is hoped that garden meetings can be organised through the summer, with a return to the Old Barn Hall in September. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
GUY BYAM (1918 - 1945) At a recent online lecture, FRANK HASLAM told the story of BBC war reporter Guy Byam (1918- 1945) who lived in Fetcham and was killed in World War 2. The son of a Belgian army officer, Guy spoke several languages. When the war broke out he became a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve engineering branch. He was posted to HMS Jervis Bay, a pre-war liner being used for convoy protection. On 28 October 1940 it left Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a convoy of 38 vessels. On 5 November the German battleship Admiral Scheer sank it before attacking the convoy and destroying six ships. There were just 68 survivors of the 266 crew and among those rescued was Guy Byam. His mother got a telegram saying: ‘Got a ducking but safe and well. Home soon.’ It is thought he joined Combined Operations and took part in a raid on Norway. He lost sight in one eye, was invalided out of service, and became an aeronautics research engineer before joining the BBC French Service in 1942, broadcasting to occupied Europe. His voice and language skills were invaluable. He underwent parachute training and accompanied the paratroopers, also learning how to send his recordings back to London. He married Nancie Lockhart, a BBC studio manager, in 1944 and their daughter Michele was born that year. The family lived in Fetcham at an early 18th century house called The Salt Box. Now two properties at the corner of Lower Road and The Street, the house is still there, Grade 2 listed with its distinctive gables. On 6 July 1944 a report by Guy appeared in The Manchester Guardian. It concluded: ‘The people are pleased to see us. We apologise for bringing the 66 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2021
war to their homes...A dead paratrooper is laid out in the best bedroom, covered from head to foot with flowers.’ Soon afterwards he was at an American air base in Essex reporting the naming of a B17 Flying Fortress bomber, Rose of York, by Princess Elizabeth (later Queen). The aircraft had already done eight missions. In September he reported an RAF attack on the Tirpitz, the enemy battleship destroying allied convoys. Then he joined Operation Market Garden, the airborne attack to secure bridges over the Rhine in Holland. He was one of the last to escape at the end of the battle. The Surrey Advertiser reported: ‘Mr Guy Byam ....[escorted] our wounded to the hospital held by the Germans, and had to escape from an SS lieutenant who tried to capture him.’ Undaunted, on 3 February 1945 he joined a raid on Berlin with the American 8th Air Force, flying on the Rose of York’s 63rd and last mission. It was hit by flak and failed to return home, disappearing in the North Sea. The BBC book War Report said Guy’s ‘reports had all the marks of a great future in broadcasting’.
Nancie left The Salt Box and married another BBC figure, the later TV newsreader Robert Dougall, in 1947. The marriage lasted more than 50 years. He died in 1999 and Nancie a few years later. For more information on the L&DLHS go to www. leatherheadhistory.org.
