Have you noticed, the dark evenings are gradually fading? Each and every day, we gain over one minute of daylight. Spring is just around the corner and I for one can’t wait! More spring bulbs were planted in my garden last autumn and I am very much looking forward to welcoming their cheery blooms in a few weeks time! Do look out for a number of New Year discounts on offer this month, there is even a free hot drink for you and a friend. Find that voucher on page 15 ! Two competitions are included, and these are well worth entering; our Cash Prize Draw, see page 20 for details on this. And do take a peep at page 46 for the chance to win a pair of tickets to attend the ‘Banff Mountain Film Festival’ which brings a high adventure film to G-Live in Guildford and is also showing at The Dorking Halls. If you win, you can select which venue you wish to attend. The scenery is just breath taking and the action, for any skiing enthusiast, is a must see! As we head into the spring there are a number of local events which are certainly worth considering. We have info regarding a wide selection; these include concerts at the magnificent Menuhin Hall, always very enjoyable. A talk in nearby Bookham about the history of the Bayeux Tapestry. Information on local library services including the return of the ever popular ‘Rhyme-time’ and The Ashtead Friday market is happening on 11th Feb. See page 53 for the details. There is also plenty of Art Society action which can be found on pages 47 & 49. We have news from Mole Valley Runners and action packed ‘What’s On’ pages too ! I hope there will something of interest for most! Wishing you a great month, a Happy Chinese New Year and a Happy Valentine’s Day too! Until next time take care,

Why make a Will? Many people are aware that a Will is important; but most people do not have one and do not appreciate why it is as important as it is, both legally and emotionally for both you and those you leave behind. You care about your loved ones A Will makes it much easier for your family or friends to sort everything out when you die – without a Will, the process can be more time-consuming and stressful. You want to decide who benefits from what you leave behind If you do not write a Will, everything you own will be shared out in a standard way, defined by the law – which is not always the way you might want. You have people who depend on you Writing a Will is especially important if you have children or other family who depend on you financially, or if you want to leave something to people outside your immediate family. If you are unmarried and have children, this is particularly important, as without a Will, your partner may not receive anything on your death.

You want to be as tax efficient as possible A Will can help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that might be payable on the value of the property and money you leave behind. You want to protect what you have accumulated for the long-term security of those you want to benefit Writing a Will means you decide who will benefit from your assets, but you can also create a structure to provide for when and how this happens. You might not want your children or grandchildren to inherit at the age of 18, you may prefer them to be older. You might have loved ones with particular needs that need to be taken into account, and when and how they inherit from you. You may want to leave a lasting legacy that cannot be frittered away and will benefit future generations of your family. How we can help you Making a Will is not necessarily an easy task for all sorts of reasons, but we are here to help you begin that process by offering an initial consultation with one of our specialist Private Client experts with no obligation to proceed, so that we can discuss with you the things you should consider and help you think about your choices and options. To arrange a no obligation appointment, please get in touch.

‘TIDAL’ FOOTPATH

Some of you may know of those risky stretches of road in coastal areas which disappear under the waves at high tide. The approach can be nerve-racking. Is the water high or low? Should I have played it safe and gone the long way round? Well, here in Fetcham we have our own version of this, in the shape of the railway embankment footpath from Mill Lane to Cannon Grove. There’s no tide of course, but there’s certainly plenty of water most of the time. The hydrology of the area is not fully understood, so unlike the tide, water levels can be unpredictable. Unless you have waterproof boots, taking the long way round has been the safest option for quite a while. However, there is perhaps an opportunity now to solve the problem. In our autumn Newsletter we reported that Network Rail is planning major works to stabilize the railway embankment. The footpath will be closed for several months while it becomes a temporary haul road for heavy machinery. Clearance of vegetation could start

as soon as this month to avoid any disturbance during the spring nesting season. But the temporary closure of the footpath, and the money needed to restore it afterwards, raises the question of whether diverting the path would be a better long-term option. It seems likely that the existing path may always be at risk of flooding. Much of the path has now effectively become part of a ‘wet woodland’ adjacent to the railway. One possibility would be a diversion along the southern side of the woodland and within the Fetcham Springs field, owned by SES Water. We think there is an opportunity for all the parties - Network Rail, SES Water, Surrey County Council (rights of way) and the FRA - to work together. It’s good that a meeting between all these parties took place before Christmas. But we need a continuing discussion to establish whether diverting the path, temporarily or permanently, is at least a possibility. As for us residents, we simply want to keep our feet dry! This month we caught up with Blair Baker about her experience as a guest with Buy to Let Hunter. Buy to Let Hunter is a niche company offering investors a chance to purchase perfect small properties to rent on a shortterm, serviced basis in the dormitory suburbs. But who, I hear you ask, chooses to stay in a tiny house in Binfield? One of our guests, Blair Baker, recently had a chat with us about her experience as a guest with Buy To Let Hunter. How did you come to be staying in one of our properties? “We sold our house in June, on the very day we put it up for market! We were relocating as a family to the States and for that to happen, my husband needed a visa. Due to Covid his application was delayed. We found ourselves in a total pickle – we were advised to stay in an Airbnb and wait. We had no idea it would be for six months!” How has the experience with BTLH been? “When we found your house in Binfield, we felt so grateful and blessed. We were actually blown away: it was a proper home for us – with a garden for Shadow and a locked shed for us to use for storage.” What would you say to other people in your position? “This has been a major life transition and you have given us the opportunity to have a home, showing us flexibility and genuine Advertising feature

care, giving so much more than a roof over our heads: honestly, it has made all the difference! It provides the perfect stop gap for those who are stuck between life transitions, a true safe place for us to be in the midst of stress and turmoil.” Blair and her family are packing and hopeful to finally make the next step towards a new life together in Massachusetts with flights scheduled and a shiny new visa in hand. “We think we will leave next week – but now we have to take Covid tests, so everything is still somewhat up in the air… it’s like the most suspenseful storyline narrative ever, isn’t it! “Will they stay or will they go?” In the nicest possible way, we hope Blair, Shadow and her family leave for good! The owner of Blair’s serviced and furnished home has been earning twice as much in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a much-needed home and has a hassle free, flexible investment. If you would like to read about our other guests or investors to discover more about our business, please do read our series of interviews with them on the website.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Mole Valley Local Plan 2020-2037 Last October/November, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) published its Regulation 19 draft of the Local Plan that covers development in the District up until 2037. Although residents were invited to comment on this draft of the Plan, this was not so that any further changes to it might be considered as the draft as published is the one that will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in the next couple of months. Comments could only be made on the legality and soundness of the Plan and ARA’s response can be found on our website under Planning. For those of you who may not have seen the response, its conclusions were as follows: “ARA believes that the Plan is unsound for the reasons below: • The plan underestimates infrastructure demands arising from traffic, health requirements, schooling and flooding. • Insufficient attention is made to resolving existing problems. Funding and programming to address these problems are a prerequisite to development. Thus, the plan as submitted is not consistent with achieving sustainable development and is not consistent with National Planning Policy.”

about the easing of the planting rules. We are hoping for some positive news that will reassure Ashtead’s tree wardens that planting can resume so that they can fulfil this key aspect of their role. Ever since we learned in July 2021 of SCC’s commitment to the setting up of Community Groups to address specific local issues, ARA has been trying to get a group set up to address the subject of verge cutting. It has been an uphill struggle but by the time that this article is published, I am hoping that we will have had more positive news and that, together with Bookham, Fetcham and Leatherhead, we can get a group together of all interested parties so that we can listen to and understand each other’s perspectives on verge cutting, the issues arising and their possible solutions. That is to say: people who like their verges cut, those who support the “No Mow May’ initiative, those who support the Blue Heart scheme, SCC representatives, our local Councillors and any other interested parties - such as MVDC which is responsible for collecting the cuttings. My fingers are crossed that progress will have been made by the time that you are reading this - any news will be on our website.

Verges, Trees and Surrey County Council Both verge cutting and tree planting have long been subjects that we have pursued with Surrey County Council (SCC). On trees, we have heard nothing following the county-wide survey that was concluded in July 2021 except that, after listening to tree wardens from around the District (including Ashtead’s own), Surrey Highways promised to reconsider their very stringent rules about planting trees in verges. That promise was made some months ago and, at the time of writing this article in December 2021, nothing further has been heard

SAVE THE DATES! - Please make a note in your diary of the following dates: Ashtead Spring Clean - April 2nd Further details will be published on our website and in next month’s issue of this magazine. ARA’s AGM – April 20th Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall (COVID restrictions permitting). Doors will open at 7pm for a 7:30 start to the AGM. Details of the guest speaker for the 2nd part of the evening will be announced shortly.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Is online shopping environmentally friendly? One industry that is seeing significant growth during the pandemic is the on-demand delivery sector. Consumers are now accustomed to speedy home delivery of food, groceries and everyday essentials, sometimes in as little as 15 minutes. But is this an environmentally friendly trend? Is it better to leave your car parked and order groceries or meal delivery? Or to purchase your new gadget/essential DIY goods/clothes online and have them brought to you at home? The problem is complex and the answers very dependent on the details of the order, the delivery timing required, the amount of packaging used and the kind of transport used by the delivery company – also the need to take into account failed deliveries and returns! Some of these issues are described by the industry as “the last-mile conundrum”. There is no simple answer as the alternatives such as going to the shops (how far away are they and is public transport viable?), click&collect, using a dedicated drop box (like the two at Ashtead Station) need also to be considered, along with the type of item being purchased (fragility and perishability etc.). Buying goods online can be markedly better for the environment than in-store shopping for the basic reason that a single van can replace multiple car trips to stores, but the same is true for click&collect. These simple explanations get muddied if you mix your online activity with parallel visits to the shops. What’s more, if you’re shopping online, there’s a larger risk of fraud and other scams. However, there are some broad conclusions that can be drawn from the numerous studies, namely: Firstly: “Standard Delivery” is much more environmentally friendly than express delivery – it allows for far better utilisation of delivery vehicles. Secondly: Over-ordering and returning numerous items is not good. Thirdly: If there is a click&collect option for a nearby location and you can walk, that’s probably the best. Fourthly: Home delivery from a local supermarket is probably better than purchasing from a national retailer working from a warehouse only - because of the lower delivery mileage, but this is partially counterbalanced by the high energy usage in a local supermarket. Fifthly: For groceries, shopping locally and using your own bags - thus minimising transport and packaging waste - is by far the best. There is nothing simple in life - but we have a wide range of local retail shops, providing us with remarkable consumer choice without having to travel far. Let’s use them regularly!

How secure are you???? Almost daily our customers tell us about their fears and concerns about being forced into a digital world, where they do not have the knowledge nor interest to ensure they are fully protected. We have created a few simple checks for your protection. 1: Never click on a link within an email you have received- the email may purport to be from your bank but the scammers may be mimicking their appearance, and the link will take you to the scammers website where they ask you for your bank’s login credentials. 2: When you go to a secure website you should see a padlock logo in the address bar- like this and usually followed by the https, indicating the website has the https://www.tecres.co.uk/ highest level of security. 3: Ensure your computer is using up to date software, Windows 10 or 11, Mac 10.15 or newer. If you use MS Office the version needs to be newer than 2016. 4: Ensure you have a paid for Internet Security program on your machine, like Webroot, Bullguard, Norton or Kasperski. 5: NEVER use the same password for all your online activities. In recent years there have been some significant data breaches from the likes of British Airways, EasyJet, Yahoo, Facebook, Adobe, Linkedin and Hilton Hotels, where millions of customers records have been taken - if your user name and password were the same for any of these, then the hackers could have access to your data. Now you might, correctly, say “why does it matter that someone has your Easyjet account details?” In isolation it may not be very significant, but you may have stored your credit or bankers details on their system, and more significantly they will have your user name and password. This isn’t scaremongering, it is reality.

What can you do to protect yourself? There is a useful website named www.haveibeenpwned.com. By putting in your email address it will tell you how many recorded breaches of your email address have been recorded. If you try this random email address johnsmith@hotmail.com, it will tell you it has been compromised on 92 occasions and where this compromise came from. If you have been pwned what can you do? Change your email password twice in a week, and ensure your new password is not similar to the old one, ensure it has numbers, upper, lower case letters, and punctuation symbols in it. Try to have a different password for your major activities like email, shopping websites, finance websites. We realise that trying to remember all these passwords is close to impossible, so we have a solution to this, for £55.00 per year we can provide you with a corporate/ military grade password keeping program, where only you can see the details stored. This will work on your PC, Mac, smart phone and tablet. Please do ask for further information. As apart of our Total Care Support package we get asked to help recover users accounts details, or where their accounts have been hacked. In most cases we are successful, but can’t be guaranteed.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU … for the fantastic generosity of the people of Ashtead, Leatherhead, Fetcham and Bookham who supported our Santa Street Collections and our Wenceslas Winter Fuel Appeal this year! Our Santa Street collections totalled £10,330.11 a record amount in what we considered “difficult times” and the uncertainty as to how much cash might be around? How wrong could we be? We collected £331.00 by card payments, £4,380.00 in bank notes (594 pieces of paper), £5,619.00 in coin (16,236 coins weighing 241 pounds - 17.25 stone: 109.57kg) so a big thank you to our Treasurer and his Grandson Timothy for all the counting and banking. Our chosen charities for the street collections this year are The Princes Alice Hospice and The Grange at Bookham, (Disability 24 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - FEBRUARY 2022

services and support), Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance plus other local charities and families and individuals. On another note, our Wenceslas Winter Fuel Appeal has already raised £4,828.50 to date so again a BIG Thank You to all those people who feel they don’t need the Winter Fuel allowance and are happy to pass it on to those who do. We receive requests for support through Citizens Advice Bureau, Christians Against Poverty and other charities involved in helping those needing support. If you know of a family or individual experiencing “Fuel Poverty” or in need of support or would like to make a donation please let us know either direct at www.leatherheadlions.org.uk or through one of the organisations in the community. Your generosity allows us to help others less fortunate. THANK YOU.

Princess Alice and other Surrey Hospices Benefit from Year End Financial Grants Hospices provide care, to improve the quality of life of people who have been diagnosed with terminal illness. Whilst part Government funded, Hospices are also deeply reliant on grants and donations from other sources, such as the Masonic Charity Foundation (MCF). Princess Alice is one of several Surrey hospices which have just been awarded end-of-year grants by the MCF, receiving £1,940. The grants are being distributed via the Masonic Charitable Foundation, from money donated by Surrey Freemasons, and will be used to help provide end-of-life support to patients and their families. After a visit from the Surrey Freemasons Charity Team, Michelle Gullliver of Princess Alice Hospice said: “We are so grateful to the Surrey Masonic Team for their financial support through the pandemic and I hope we were able to demonstrate the difference this support has made through the most challenging of times, for both our team and the patients and families they have supported.” Princess Alice Hospice has been caring for people in our local communities for 35 years and the global COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped that. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Princess Alice has cared for more than 3,000 people. The Masonic Charitable Foundation has also awarded 227 grants this year, to hospices across England and Wales, totaling £600,000. Contributions from Freemasons to hospices have exceeded £15 million in England and Wales since 1984. 26 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - FEBRUARY 2022

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

THE CENTRE FOR MILITARY STRESS RELIEF Combat Stress, formerly known as the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society, has its headquarters today at Tyrwhitt House, Leatherhead. The building is named after Admiral Sir Reginald Tyrwhitt, society president after the death in 1931 of founder Sir Frederick Milner. But Milner House in Ermyn Way, Tyrwhitt House Leatherhead, now a conventional care home for the elderly, takes its name from Sir Frederick himself and formerly served stress victims from the military. This local association with stress relief featured in a pre-Christmas talk to the Leatherhead & District Local History Society by L&DLHS chairman John Rowley. He covered two angles – the history of what was formerly known as Frederick Milner House, and the story of ‘Pill Box Hero’ Captain Harry Reynolds, winner of both the Victoria and Military Crosses in World War 1, who afterwards became superintendent of Frederick Milner House. Sir Frederick, known as ‘the Soldiers and Sailors Friend’, established the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society in 1919 to campaign for shell-shocked veterans. He was among forward-thinkers who felt they should not be treated in asylums. In 1926, he bought what was then The Long House, Leatherhead, Frederick Milner House on behalf of the 30 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - FEBRUARY 2022

society and sought to actively engage military stress victims in a positive environment. He built a factory and market garden in the grounds which both provided them with wages and skills and raised funds for those unable to work. The grounds hosted fundraising garden parties and in 1932, the future King George VI and Queen Mother visited during a holiday at nearby Polesden Lacey. Captain Harry Reynolds (1879-1948), from Northamptonshire, had a military career dating back to 1901 in the territorials and secured a commission in the Royal Scots in 1915. In 1917 he Captain Harry Reynolds won the MC for actions under fire at Arras and then the VC for similar behaviour at Ypres where he led successful attack on a German pill box despite injury. He continued a military career after the war until 1927 and in 1930 joined the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society as superintendent of the Eden Lodge, Beckenham, moving in 1933 with his wife to Frederick Milner House. He developed various initiatives including marketing herbs, strawberries and honey locally, drawing on his own family farming origins. During World War 2, Frederick Milner House provided accommodation for bombed- out families as well as continuing its work with servicemen. Changes forced by new wartime conditions meant Harry and his wife had to move out and he left the society in 1942 although the family now lived in Skinners Lane, Ashtead. Harry died in 1948 and is buried at St Giles’ Church. For more information from the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

2021 - A fabulous year for

MOLE VALLEY RUNNERS

2021 was a fabulous year for Mole Valley Runners. Despite all of the uncertainty and challenges that Covid has brought, the club managed to grow and support all of the members brilliantly. The club offers 10 different types of run each week. From a 5k beginner run and walk group to a 10k continuous run. Running from venues such as Bookham Common, Norbury Park, KGV in Effingham, Denbies and Dorking Halls. The focus is always on enjoyment, so there is never any pressure on pace. There are both morning and evening runs, there really is something for everyone, all supported by a great team of run leaders. 2021 saw members achieve a huge number of personal goals, whether that was achieving 34 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - FEBRUARY 2022

their first 5k, running 10k continuously, earning their first medal, running in fancy dress, running their first marathon or even an ultra marathon. The club is incredibly supportive, with the members really cheering each other on and helping each other to achieve their goals. There have also been lots of fun activities like Bingo challenges, pub runs, fancy dress runs and Christmas lights tours. If you are looking to get into running in 2022, come along and give it a go, you’ll find us to be a very friendly group. For more information follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/ MoleValleyRunners or have a look on our website www.molevalleyrunners.co.uk #Support #Believe #Achieve #Run

HOME WANTED! Bomber

7 yr old Bomber is very ready to go to his forever home, which he so richly deserves after being in care for so long. He is very friendly and so chatty – he chirrups all the time. He loves his food and certainly needs more space to run around and lose some weight! Bomber has been given a ball into which biscuits are put and then he bats the ball around to make the biscuits fall out. He loves this ball! Bomber needs to be adopted by a household of one or two people who have had the experience of looking after a long term stray which can be so rewarding. He will become a lovely companion for someone but at the moment he is not a lap cat. He needs direct access to a secure garden, with no other pets and no children. If you could give Bomber his forever home please email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk or call 0345 260 1387.

Extraordinary life of Misia Sert: muse to Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard and Vuillard; patron of the Ballets Russes, concert pianist and fashion icon

Born into a Polish family, Misia was a virtuoso pianist taught by Gabriel Fauré, before marrying, the owner of the magazine La Revue Blanche. Painted many times by Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Eduard Vuillard (who was deeply in love with her), and Renoir (who wanted to paint her nude). Debussy and Ravel dedicated several pieces to her. She financed Diaghilev’s Russian Ballets becoming an integral part of the circle around Picasso, Stravinsky, Cocteau and Nijinsky. She was at the heart of modern art and music in Paris. For the remainder of 2022, The Arts Society Ashtead will be offering another packed programme, with our ever-popular monthly arts-related talks, as well as four visits to places of interest, a Special Interest Day, and other events. 11 February: Ashtead Pottery—Dr Anne Anderson

The main driving forces behind the creation of the company were Sir Lawrence and Lady Weaver, a highly influential couple of the time. The factory was in Ashtead village from 1923 to 1935; it was set up with the aim of providing employment for disabled ex-servicemen and at its busiest it gave work to up to forty men. Anne will tell us about the pottery and how it came to be so collectible.

mole valley W.I. january report Thirty-nine members attended our January Zoom meeting & Julie, our president, began by wishing us all a Happy New Year before moving on to the news & info. Unfortunately our lunch at Effingham Golf Club has had to be cancelled, but it has been re-booked for June 30th & a fundraising Quiz is planned for 14th May. Sue Bass wished a Happy Birthday to all members with birthdays in January after which Julie introduced our guest speaker, Nigel Bates, who has worked for over 40yrs with London’s Royal Opera House, including 17yrs as Principal Percussionist & 8yrs as the musical administrator for the Royal Ballet. As well as views of the opulent red & gold u-shaped auditorium, we were treated to short excerpts from ballets & operas which included a young Rudolf Nureyev dancing in the sword fight from scene from Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, during which the violins are required to play at incredible speeds, & The Toasting song from Wagner’s The Meistersingers of Nuremberg conducted by Bernard Haitnik featuring, in the last moments, Nigel playing the cymbal clashes. We watched Simon Rattle rehearsing Sophie’s Choice with the Berlin Philharmonic & a scene from the ‘Carry On’ film Raising the Wind in which the Royal Covent Garden Orchestra was conducted by an increasingly harried Kenneth Williams. Julie thanked Nigel for what was a truly enjoyable cultural evening. Mole Valley meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.45pm at Fetcham hall and welcomes new members. Home Security NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

When considering what to write about this month, it would have been so refreshing not to feel the need to focus on an issue that still continues to cause immense distress to people when it happens. I am speaking, of course, about burglaries of domestic dwellings - as well as thefts from garages, sheds, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. Sadly, it is so often the case with burglaries that many homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in - they gain easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all, cases we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level. Even when rear windows and doors have been locked - but the keys have been left in the locks or clearly visible nearby - we have found that burglars have gained easy access simply by breaking some glass and turning the key!! Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to a would-be burglar. Apart from the obvious guidance to ensure that homes and property are locked up securely, it is often the case that a property that looks unoccupied is a more vulnerable target than a home that looks as if there is someone at home. That is why I

emphasise, once again, the benefit of using timers to bring on lights when you are not at home. Ideally, you should have lights coming on in different rooms at different times to mirror, as much as possible, your normal patterns of movement. Basic timers are relatively inexpensive and can make a big difference in creating an impression of occupancy within a home. Also, I would reiterate that, as the dedicated Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley, I can offer free, impartial and cost-effective advice that can help to protect your home and property and make it more secure. That is probably the most rewarding part of my job and I feel strongly that it is important to help people make their homes and property more secure and less vulnerable to being targeted by a burglar. All you have to do to contact me is to call 101 and ask to be put through to me by name. My extension number is 30809. Alternatively, you can call my direct line on 01483 630809 or email me at Neil.Clarke@surrey.pnn.police.uk. I always focus on practical advice that is cost-effective and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not endorse specific companies but can guide you towards what should meet your needs.

FEBRUARY BOOK REVIEWS Ashtead Library has these books to reserve, so come & put your name down. Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2BQ

‘The Binding’ By Bridget Collins. A really intriguing idea for this story. A young lad, Emmett Farmer, is summoned to work as an apprentice bookbinder. It soon becomes apparent that the bindings are to store client’s memories – the bad ones they wish to forget! He discovers one of the bindings already has his name on it. As the reasons for them become clear, he realises that secrets and pain can be erased, but at what cost? The author trained at Lamda, she has produced two plays already and this story is so descriptive that visually it would make a fantastic film or play. Definitely recommended and perfect for young adults upwards.

‘Did you see Melody?’ By Sophie Hannah. Sophie Hannah is a thriller writer, mostly psychological thrillers with a slight twist. This book does not disappoint! The main character, Cara, takes a break at a spa and ends up getting involved in a long-established murder case by accident! In her hotel room she finds Melody, who was killed several years earlier. Is she really Melody? Why is she there? How is she alive...and how does this impact on Cara’s more straightforward life? This story is intense, gripping and a real page turner.

‘You and Me On Vacation’ - By Emily Henry. A warm and witty read with great characters – the perfect read in these trying times. I laughed out loud more than once and will definitely be searching out more by this author.

All books are available to reserve at Ashtead Library.
