Isn’t it amazing, that the little things we always took for granted, like inviting a few friends over for a meal or going out to eat, mean so much now? I enjoyed my first meal out the other day. We were lucky to pick a good day and so able to sit comfortably outside, and what a treat it was! Here’s hoping we can all enjoy a good summer of making up for lost time! It’s also really good to report that a number local events are starting up again and as a result we are able to include a few more each month. For the first time in over a year, we have even managed to put together a double page of ‘What’s on’ entries for you to see this month! Of course, these could still be subject to changes, so please do check before attending any events if possible, to avoid disappointment. It has, in my opinion, been a particularly difficult year for the young adults/teens … so it was especially nice to hear from local student, Sophie Prestwich with some tips on choosing the right University. First hand experience is always worth taking into account, I’m sure her tips will be helpful to many… I expect many of our readers have heard about, or been on the receiving end of, the great work done by ‘Mid Surrey Community Fridges’ over the past year… this fantastic local initiative received some very well deserved recognition recently in the form of a Queens Award … we send everyone who has been involved our huge Congratulations, what an achievement! I hope you enjoy exploring our pages and I wish you all a great month ahead. Warm Regards,

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

The ARA article in last November’s edition of this magazine was about the future of the Association, given our ageing committee and the lack of people volunteering to join us and take on the mantle of our work. Simply put, if more Ashtead residents do not put themselves forward to take up places on the committee then it will cease to be able to function at all. Why is it, I wonder, that there is not greater interest in seeing that the Association survives? Remember that our voice carries weight with both the District and County Councils and through that voice we are another conduit, working on Ashtead’s behalf, into those Councils. Don’t forget that the Association also works in Ashtead’s interests with other statutory bodies such as the railway companies and neighbourhood policing. If you think that our voice doesn’t reflect that of Ashtead residents then come and join us to make sure that it does. Our voice is heard… Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) Officers meet bi-monthly with the local bodies whom they consider to be representative of their communities and who have a broad perspective and awareness of what is going on in their own locality. In the south of the District, those bodies are mainly Parish Councils, represented by Parish Clerks; in the north, those bodies are the Residents’ Associations (RA) represented by the RA Chairs. Our voice is heard… The Association also works closely with the RAs in Bookham, Fetcham and Leatherhead and we act as a unit on all matters that affect each of us. Together we carry the voice of around 45,000 Mole Valley residents and our opinions are valued and listened to. Ashtead’s place in that unit is under threat if we do not manage to recruit willing volunteers to join the committee and 12 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JULY 2021

carry things forward after existing members cease to be able to do the work and step down. The Association has a constitution that defines its raison d’être and allows for a 16-strong committee. At present we number just 10 people, so that alone should indicate just how many areas of Ashtead life we are unable to cover. Could you be the person who could bring a perspective on schools, youth services, be our liaison with Ashtead’s business community, take on running our publicity and social media? Do you have any interest in, for example, planning or railways and could begin to take on some of that work from current committee members? I’m repeating below just a few of last November’s reminder of the work we have done over the years, or been instrumental in effecting: • Reviewing all Planning Applications in Ashtead and making representation to the Council. • Persuading the Woodland Trust to divert construction lorries away from Park Lane and Farm Lane and encourage all visitors to the site to use the “Derby” traffic route. • Organizing the annual Ashtead Spring Clean. • Sponsoring Ashtead Tree Wardens. • Supporting the fight to get a pharmacy back in The Street. • Ensuring planned level crossing closures are arranged to minimise disruption for residents. • Obtaining an off-peak parking tariff in the station car park. If any of the kind of work listed above matters to you, then we need your help to ensure its continuation. The Association is very much in need of your support so, if you are interested in learning more, I’d love to hear from you at: chairman@ashteadresidents.org.uk. Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

LETTING THE GRASS GROW Have you noticed something different about our roadside verges this year? That’s right - they’re looking longer, a bit messy and distinctly wilder. Well, before you start picking up the phone to the council demanding the arrival of the grass cutters, you need to know that this is no accident. It’s all about the buzz word of the moment “biodiversity” and everyone doing their bit to try and make sure we have more of it. We’re calling the initiative Fetcham Blue Hearts Wildflower Verges, and you will have seen some of the handmade Blue Hearts signs planted around the village. Clare Curran, one of our county councillors, has requested that three main road verges are not cut until the end of the summer flowering season. The Fetcham scheme is being masterminded by the FRA’s Caroline Cardew-Smith. She says the grass areas around the Bocketts Farm roundabout are doing especially well, with a whole variety of plants coming through including cowslips in May, and at the last count over 30 orchids. Many thanks too to some of the Badingham Drive

residents who have created a Blue Hearts area on the corner with Lower Road. There’s been much support for the scheme, and it’s clear that many residents who would normally be cutting their verges have decided to hold off, and simply let it grow. You can of course create your own ‘mini-meadow’ by leaving part of your lawn uncut. It’s amazing to see what comes up, and it’s lovely to see the long grass swaying in the breeze. What we often think of as ‘weeds’ are in fact wildflowers whose leaves and flowers are a vital insect food source. When these plants decline, insect numbers decline, and the aim is to reverse this very disturbing trend. By late August the areas of longer grass will be brown and setting seed. Mowing in August and leaving the clippings on the ground will aid fertility and spread seed for next year. If you would like to know more about the Blue Hearts scheme, or would like some advice on making your garden and verges more wildlife friendly, please email fetchambluehearts@gmail.com and visit the Wild About Fetcham site on Facebook. This month we asked Adrian, founder of Buy To Let Hunter, if he is still able to get a great deal for his clients who are looking to invest in property: “As a company who carefully curates and purchases accommodation for clients, we can see that house prices are clearly rising. The South East is currently increasing at a rate of 7.9% annually, which is actually ranking relatively low on the official countrywide chart - some areas have seen a 14% annual growth. The places we are sourcing for our clients are seeing 4-5% growth, which, we feel, is a good rate without creating a possible bubble. Slow and steady!” What about the potential oversupply of property and backlash as the market inevitably adjusts? “These areas we are buying in are generally protected against that, so whilst corrections might be possible in the market in general they are unlikely - or, I think, at the very least minimal in the right parts of the South East. I am sure that our instincts will prove correct, and I am quietly confident this gradual growth will continue and remain sustainable.” Are people’s pandemic fears impacting travel and bookings for the “serviced accommodation” and holiday lets this summer? “As lockdown starts to ease, we are thrilled to report that May has seen the highest occupancy so far this year: an astonishing 99.1%. We have also noted that the market is supporting slightly higher rental rates as well, so we are gently increasing ours in line with this trend. We have already seen a 10% increase and it’s continuing Advertising feature

to go up in June. As suspected, the boom for “staycations” is well established and our holiday home rates for the summer season are through the roof.” How are the projected returns for the serviced accommodation market? “While property prices have increased, we are still maintaining a healthy 10% ROI for our serviced accommodation clients. Finding the right properties may be harder, I am definitely having to work harder, but negotiating the right purchase prices is still possible. Nationally, 30% of real estate deals fall through; however with our no nonsense approach, BTLH has a better than 90% completion rate on properties at the moment - proving that great buyers are as important as a great price.” Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. From woodland foraging to factory floor, forgotten recipes to regional delicacies, MVDC is asking its festival community to explore the past, present, and future of Mole Valley’s culinary heritage and culture. The closing date for event registrations is 1 August. Once signed up, event holders can access a range of guidance, support and promotional materials. To find out more about Heritage Open Days 2021,

TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING A UNIVERSITY By Sophie Prestwich (local student)

It’s that time of the year again when some students start to think about applying for University. I am currently a second year psychology student at the University of Exeter and I remember going into the university choosing experience somewhat clueless. Open days are brilliant but they can be overwhelming so I have listed below some of my top tips surrounding University Open days and ultimately choosing a University that suits you!

the day to refer back to when you have seen all your selected Universities. The students will run the tours so ask them anything! They were in your position once too and there is truly no such thing as a stupid question.

1)

5)

Research and book the open days well in advance. Finalise your top 3-5 universities and look on their website for open day dates; although they are free they might require a ticket for you and your guardians to attend.

2)

Allow enough time to go around the campus and the local area. If you can, get to the university campus at the beginning of the day, it’s good to have plenty of time. Also have a look around the city or local area. You might be living off-campus in the second and third year, so work out if it is somewhere you can actually imagine yourself living.

3)

Take photos, go on the tours and ask questions. Take plenty of photos on your phone throughout

20 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JULY 2021

4)

Look at more than just the course. There is a lot more to University life than the course you choose. Look at the sports facilities, societies, nightlife and study spaces too! It might not be love at first sight! Everyone says “You can feel it in your bones when you see the University that’s right for you”. But to be honest that wasn’t the case for me and that’s okay too. It might only be upon reflection of all the open days that you decide the university that’s best for you, or it might take discussions with friends, teachers and family, just don’t feel under pressure to know straight away.

6)

Ultimately find the things that YOU like and that get YOU excited. After all it is you that will be a student for 3 or more years. I hope these tips help you on your way to feeling excited about open days and starting your university journey!

Scams, scams and more scams We have recently seen an increase in problems relating to email account passwords not being accepted. When we heard a worrying statistic that over £2b was stolen in UK scams last year. Yes £5.48m per day, £228,310 per hour or £3,805 per minute- just think about that for a moment….. It is not surprising that almost every day we hear of a new scam. Something purporting to be from one of the big tech companies like BT, Microsoft, Amazon, Virgin Media to name but a few examples. There is also an emerging cluster from delivery companies and government bodies like the tax man, who all apparently want to resolve the problem you didn’t know you had. The motive of the scammer is always the same- to gain access to your bank account, and/or your credit card details. Their approach appears to be consistent - they have detected a “problem” with your internet connection or, computer/ parcel delivery/ tax refund and you can help them confirm the problem, then they can solve the issue. Our advice at this point is to interrupt the scammer and suggest you will investigate the problem yourself. In some cases the caller will become quite persistent that they will resolve the problem for you, but you need to remain resolute and say you will investigate the problem yourself and hang up the phone. NEVER allow them to connect to your computer, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Because of the way the phone system works, there is a possibility that if you picked up your telephone receiver shortly after stopping the scammers call, they may still be connected to your line. To overcome this we would advise you to not use your phone for the next 10 minutes- this will force the line to disconnect from the last call, then you can make an outgoing call. Should you feel concerned about the problem you have been alerted to and wish to pursue the matter, firstly ask yourself: • Why would XXX (lets say Virgin Media) be calling me? • Do you have a Virgin Media service? • Would they have your phone number? (It is very unlikely that Microsoft would know it) Below we have listed below some useful contact numbers of the legitimate companies who supposedly has just called you, so that you can check the calls authenticity yourself.

If the scammer has connected to your machine they may have installed some software which will enable them to access and control your computer without your permission. We have also seen some scammers install malicious software which will delete your data in 7/14/21 days after the hack. Should you have any concerns we can ensure your computer is free from any unwanted software. The government have setup a website on this subject which is https:// www.actionfraud.police.uk/ Should you have any ongoing concerns please feel free to call or drop into the store for further information.

£18K GRANT TO SUPPORT SURREY CARERS A Leatherhead based charity, Crossroads Care Surrey, has been awarded a grant of £18,000 by Surrey Freemasons, to support their community volunteer, befriending and outreach support program. This is a project originally set up last year to support carers and those most vulnerable, living alone and isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic. The program supports carers, by helping them to build new friendships and connections within their own community, through befriending calls, developing online skills, and helping carers to connect virtually, so that they can learn to join online community groups and activities, as well as learning to do essential shopping and banking. For those who cannot get out because they are shielding or caring full-time, Crossroads Care volunteers will also help by picking up food shopping and helping with prescription medication collection. This grant is part of a wider £715,000 Freemasons project to help up to 33,000 adult, young and parent carers across the UK. This includes providing 870 young carers with respite through activities and breaks, while 760 young carers are being provided with essential items and life skills. Elsewhere, almost 100 schools are receiving assistance to identify hidden young carers and provide them with much

28 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JULY 2021

needed support. In total, more than 1,800 young carers are receiving advice, support, and information though this project. Paul Crockett, who works with the Surrey Freemasons Charity Team, says: “The opportunity to support organisations like Crossroads Care is hugely important to us. The community volunteer befriending and outreach program is a project that will resonate with our members, many of whom also volunteer and help within their local communities. Terry Hawkins, CEO of Crossroads Care Surrey, also said: “We are so grateful to Surrey Freemasons for the incredible work they do at a local level, raising vital funds to support the needs of those most vulnerable, including unpaid carers who are a ‘hidden group’ of unsung heroes, who take care of their loved ones round-the-clock. These funds will support our on-going work to recruit an army of volunteers, who help local carers to access services that complement existing respite care in the home and community in Surrey. This is the second grant we have received from Surrey Masons in recent years. They also support our caring families who have children with care needs to access respite breaks.”

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

CORSETS AND CAMERAS In the Society’s May lecture on Zoom, JANE LEWIS of Surrey History Centre used photographs from the 1860s to the 1920s to illustrate how clothing fashions developed for both sexes. She explained that people would wear their best clothes when posing for photographs yet these might last for 20 years or more, trimmed with new collars and cuffs, and were often out of date, particularly for less fashion conscious older people. A photo taken in 1885 showed an older lady seated before three other women, the younger two wearing fashionable clothes and hats. The fourth lady, also older, wore clothes from the 1870s while the one seated wore clothing fashionable in the 1850s and 60s. A second photo depicted a wedding in 1903, one occasion when bride and groom might wear new clothes. In this case a newspaper report said the bride wore cross lace and the bridesmaids carried crooks and wore soft cream satin dresses with shoes and sashes of emerald green. A photograph from the late 1860s showed a woman wearing a crinolette, a smaller version of a crinoline. Both were designed to be worn beneath a petticoat but this woman, a housemaid, had none and had probably borrowed the outfit from the photographer. Crinolines were widely worn over full sleeves. Hair was tied back into a smooth bun at the base of the neck and covering ears. Then the style changed and instead of the bell shape, the fullness switched to the back. But fullness was still considered necessary to make the waist look smaller so crinolines were replaced by bustles in the Ladies 1885

1870s with ruffles and trimmings. Women’s bonnets resembled hats except for the ribbons tied under the chin. They had a flowerpot design with elaborate feathers and trimmings. A photo showed women playing tennis in such hats and also wearing very tight corsets. One also had a very high collar. Such collars came in during the 1880s, influenced by Alexandra, Princess of Wales, who wore them to disguise a scar on her neck. Men’s clothes changed much more slowly. Dandies of the earlier 19th century gave way to men who simply looked respectable, rather than fashionable. Styles for tying cravats developed through the century but only military clothing could be used to accurately date a photo. High turnover collars were worn but neckties grew wider. Frock-coats became single breasted over waistcoats that sometimes had lapels. Eventually, matching three-piece suits were introduced, at first considered avant garde. In many earlier photos, tall stovepipe hats were probably borrowed from the photographer to denote gentility. Bowler and soft felt hats eventually came in various shapes and flat strawChildren 1885

boaters were worn for yachting and other sports. Young children of both sexes wore dresses until four or five years old, but boys tended to have less frilly clothes while girls were shown holding a doll or bunch of flowers. Boys might have books. In the 1920s, fashion changed with the advent of romper suits. For more on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

RJ CLINIC RESTORE • REJUVENATE • REPAIR

STEP INTO SUMMER

Summer is a time where we see many injuries and re-occurrences of old injuries in our clinic due to that urge to be out in the garden, or to play a round of golf or even start a new exercise regime (this will be especially pertinent this year as lockdown gradually lifts)

So when the sun comes out, please do... 1. Be mindful about yourself and your posture. 2. Change your activity often (weed for 15 minutes, mow the lawn for 15 mins, dig for 15 mins) and then rest for 15 minutes. Gather your thoughts, gather your aches and pains and re-assess. 3. A simple warm up to raise your body temperature (walking is fine). 4. Drink plenty of water. 5. Ice any known areas of concern and any stretches you may know or have been taught in the past for your condition afterwards (like knee hugs, or the pelvic bridge exercises).

But mainly - don’t over do it and seek advice if you start to feel any niggles or pain.

“Our passion is to get fast results, help you understand what is wrong and how to help yourself” We love helping people out of pain, if you have any questions and would like to know more, please just give us a call 01372 363 721 or email us on info@rjclinic.co.uk Check out our website www.rjclinic.co.uk

MID SURREY COMMUNITY FRIDGES RECEIVES THE QUEEN’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE

Mid Surrey Community Fridges (MSCF), a group of volunteers based around Dorking and mid-Surrey, has been honoured with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. MSCF was formed in 2017 to divert as much good food from landfill as possible, by making that food easily available to anyone who wants it. Now operating from eight sites across Surrey, each week MSCF distributes around 7.5 tonnes of food and welcomes around 500 people to take a bag of groceries and fresh produce. This award recognises the 136 generous, committed and hard-working volunteers who maintain a complex logistic system to collect food from supermarkets and other sources and distribute it. In particular, MSCF’s response to the Covid pandemic, when it worked closely with local agencies to deliver food directly to people in urgent need, was a factor in this award. Clare Davies, Founder and CEO of MSCF said “Our volunteers are the very heart and soul of Mid Surrey 36 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JULY 2021

Community Fridges and I am thrilled that they have been recognised with this award. It is their enthusiasm, kindness and selflessness that has enabled us to help some of the most vulnerable through the most testing of times. “Saving good food from going to waste is our passion and being able to reroute that food to make a positive contribution in the community is a real privilege; we are always bowled over by the messages of thanks we receive, from those who may have tried something new for the first time or who simply enjoy the sense of community that a visit to a Fridge provides.” Mid Surrey Community Fridges is one of 241 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations remains high year on year, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. They include volunteer groups from across the UK, including an inclusive tennis club in Lincolnshire; a children’s bereavement charity in London; a support group for those living with dementia and their carers in North Yorkshire; a volunteer minibus service in Cumbria; a group supporting young people in Belfast; a community radio station in Inverness and a mountain rescue team in Powys. Representatives of Mid Surrey Community Fridges will receive the award crystal and certificate from Michael More-Molyneux, Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey later this summer. Furthermore two volunteers from MSCF will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2022 (depending on restrictions at the time), along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Even though we are now unsure whether we will be allowed to meet in July we must plan ahead and hope that our ladies will take up the invitation of afternoon tea or a coffee morning in various members gardens during the summer. Numbers will be dependent on outside space, and the sun shining will be an important bonus. Amongst the venues we hope to be available will be a large and flower filled front garden in Ashtead, and a stunning smaller rear garden in Bookham. Can’t think of anything nicer than spending time with good friends as there is a lot of catching up to do.

mole valley W.I. june report Slightly fewer joined our June meeting as some of our members are away. The easing of lockdown rules has enabled our second gardening group, the knit and natter (more natter than knit) and the scrabble group to meet again. We also have some dates for the future; an outing on 3rd September and we are planning to hold an Autumn Bazaar on the 9th October. A summer lunch is booked on 29th June at Effingham Golf Club. More outings are planned for next year, watch this space! We were advised that Surrey are now having face to face courses whilst continuing with Zoom talks and that there is a bursary available for some lucky person to train as a Forest School Assistant. We then voted on this year’s resolution “To Raise Awareness of the Subtle Signs of Ovarian Cancer” which was carried. We were also advised of some changes to the use of Fetcham Village Hall which might impact on future social events. Our speaker Rosemary Horton who is a cheese maker and dairy person then told us of her interesting experiences about her yearlong visit to New Zealand. June Webb

Join us on Tuesday 20th July at 10.30: for a thrilling talk

The Master of Suspense: Alfred Hitchcock After moving to Hollywood, ‘Hitch’ created several masterpieces of cinema, including Vertigo (1958) and Psycho (1960). Vertigo has recently been voted by critics as the best-ever film, overtaking Citizen Kane. Together we will explore Hitchcock’s dark film about sexual obsession. Taking a shower still fills many people with dread and foreboding, thanks to the Hitchcock Modern Horror classic of 1960. A full analysis of Hitchcock’s masterful technique and influences will be the central focus of this lecture. Alfred Hitchcock remains by far the most studied and revered film director of all time.

To join as our guest, send a request to tas.ashtead@gmail.com

leatherhead & District The motto of the u3a is “learn, laugh and live” and it is certainly true of the Leatherhead branch. We have over 30 different groups meeting at various times of the month in order to improve our knowledge and skills. Although during the Covid 19 restrictions we have been unable to meet face to face our technological skills have benefitted by the use of Zoom meetings. If there is a subject this is not covered on our list, members are free to start a new group. We also enjoy coffee mornings or afternoon tea, on alternate months, again on Zoom. As we hopefully come to the end of such difficult times we will be able to offer monthly meetings at our new venue, Fetcham Village Hall. We meet every third Thursday of the month at 2pm with

the exception of August and it is hoped we will recommence in October 2021. HOME WANTED! Jack Frost

D CE

Could you offer Jack Frost the home he needs to continue his journey to a happy ending? If so please get in touch on 0345 260 1387 or adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk

Jack Frost is male tabby who is approximately 1 year old. He was found living as a stray and unfortunately despite our best efforts we were unable to locate an owner. He was very shy when he first came into care but is growing in confidence every day. Jack Frost needs to be an only pet in an adult only, calm home with direct access to an enclosed, safe garden for him to explore, in a quiet area. Despite being shy he has been well socialised at some point as once he gets to know you, he loves a cuddle and is learning to be brushed. He enjoys his food and play has been a very important part of his development; his favourite toy is his toy ribbon which he loves to chase - although it can be a little difficult to get it back! Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk

In line with Cats Protection guidelines, we are only homing cats in the local areas of: KT5,6,9, KT17-23, SM7 and RH3-5

Emergency Food Support to Indian Families from Surrey Freemasons Families and children experiencing severe poverty in India during the COVID-19 pandemic, will be receiving vital emergency support, thanks to a grant of £50,000 from local Freemasons to Plan International UK. The £50,000 grant is enough to provide an expected 1,700 emergency food parcels for some of the most vulnerable families, whose livelihoods have been devastated during the pandemic. Millions of families have exhausted their savings during a five-month lockdown across the country. Livelihoods and jobs have been lost, and families all over India are struggling to afford necessities like food, and the hygiene materials they need to stay safe. The collapse of savings, coupled with food shortages, means that many thousands of children, especially girls, are going hungry. Woman receives emergency food kit in Odisha state

Plan International UK is an independent development and humanitarian charity that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

JULY BOOK REVIEWS

Ashtead Library has these books to reserve, come & put your name down. Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2BQ

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig ‘Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever.’ The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is a story about life, regrets, choices and embracing life. After a really bad day, Nora Seed finds herself in the Midnight Library; a library where each book on the endless shelves is a life she could have lived, if she had made a different choice. Nora is given the opportunity to undo her regrets as she travels through these different lives, and must decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place. The book is an easy, consumable read, and as you follow Nora in her journey of growth and selfdiscovery, you can’t help but wonder what books you might read about yourself in the Midnight Library.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy Artist Charlie Mackesy has been a cartoonist for The Spectator and a book illustrator for Oxford University Press. He has collaborated with Richard Curtis for Comic Relief, and Nelson Mandela on a lithograph project. A must read for anyone looking for comfort, advice or something heart-warming. This beautifully illustrated book is hope in uncertain times. Enter the world of Charlie’s four unlikely friends, discover their story and their most important life lessons. “Do you have a favourite saying?” asked the boy. “Yes” said the Mole. “What is it?” “If at first you don’t succeed, have some cake” “I see, does it work?” “Every time” The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse isn’t as much a story as it is a book of advice, encouragement, and lessons accompanied by whimsical hand-drawn illustrations and script. The advice and lessons are beautiful and meaningful, and the entire book is a genuinely heartfelt experience.

The Court of Miracles - The Court of Miracles Trilogy Book 1 by Kester Grant (Fantasy/ Historical Fiction) A reimagining of the much loved Les Miserables and what might have happened to your favourite characters if the French Revolution had not come to pass. Paris mourns the failed revolution. The wretched band together to form The Court of Miracles, to protect their own. When Nina’s (Eponine) Father, Thenardier, sells her sister to the Guild of Flesh she makes a promise to do anything she can to get her sister back. Nina works her way up ranks of The Guild of Thieves, becoming one of the greatest the Court has ever known, finding a place among them and gaining another sister, Cosette. But if she’s to have any hope of saving one sister, she will have to betray the other. Kester Grant paints an enticing picture of the underbelly of Paris, with twists and turns and treachery. A true page turner. Which Guild would you belong to? The first in a trilogy with the next book out

later this year. 52 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JULY 2021

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Do less, enjoy more! Dictionary definition of garden ‘A plot of ground where herbs, fruits, flowers, or vegetables are cultivated; rich well-cultivated region; a container (such as a window box) planted with a variety of small plants.’ Our gardens are absolutely vital for wildlife, they are a matter of survival for many species. Ever since I started gardening with a tiny back yard in Brixton, I have been gardening to support nature. Over the last seven years in our present garden, I’ve added hundreds of nectar flowers, a variety of trees, two ponds, piles of logs and stones, made a ‘dead’ hedge, planted a UK native and a hawthorn hedge and stopped mowing three areas of long grass. The reward is a ‘living’ garden full colour, bird song and the humming and buzzing of insects. By my personal definition, ‘neat’ gardens with short mown lawns, hedges clipped and ‘cleaned’ at the base, or replaced with the ubiquitous laurel or photinia, lacking any ‘messy’ areas, or without any plants, trees or anything to support wildlife aren’t proper gardens at all. Maybe we shouldn’t depend on others to provide habitat for wildlife. It’s time for us all to take responsibility for supporting natural flora and fauna and not be NNimg-ist (No Nature in My Garden). I’m sure folks who keep their gardens ‘tidy’ also love nature programmes, think David Attenborough is a saint, enjoy hearing bird song, seeing bees and like hedgehogs. But sadly, hedgehogs can’t survive in cut-back hedges with just a small strip between gardens – they need a decent depth to hide, hibernate and move through. Skinny hedges won’t support nesting birds, bare fences, no plants and shorn lawns support very little wildlife. This fairly recent shift to ‘remodeled’ outside spaces has been encouraged by garden designers and make-over shows that encourage viewers to treat gardens like an extension of their houses, ‘rooms’ to be ‘decorated.’ But that way of thinking deprives our native wildlife of their living places, their vital homes and food sources. If you’re not keen on spending time keeping flower-beds neat and tidy, why not divide off a section at the end of your patch of ground and leave it to grow wild? It doesn’t have to be huge, it will need little maintenance and the insects and birds will love it and it will provide a vital wildlife corridor. This is a necessity rather than a luxury for wild-life – and for us humans! Our food supplies depend on having a good healthy ecosystem full of pollinating insects. If we lose that we lose everything. A world devoid of wildlife in all its glory is a world that will slowly fade away; so please think about this before mowing all your lawn or tidying under hedges - leaving small piles of logs or leaves makes a huge difference. Learn to love your wildflowers just like the insects do and be rewarded by seeing nature thrive, put your feet up and enjoy the wildlife more!

What is a Designing Out Crime Officer? NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

Apart from being a somewhat ungrammatical job title, there is quite a lot of confusion about what this role actually entails. In part, this has come about because different police forces use differing names and job titles for the same thing! For example, in Surrey my colleagues and I used to be known as Crime Reduction Advisors (which we still are), whereas in Sussex and other forces around the country, the title was Crime Prevention Officer. Over the years, there have been other variations on the theme such as Crime Prevention Design Advisor and even Architectural Liaison Officer!! So finally, a decision was made nationally to standardise the name across all forces and the term Designing Out Crime Officer (or DOCO) was chosen!! Suffice to say that I now I have to spend time explaining what I actually do but – in a nutshell – I’m all about preventing or deterring crime before it can take place. If it has taken place, then my job is to try to suggest ways to deter further attempts into the future. Obviously, much of my focus is on helping people to make their homes and property more secure but I am also involved in working with planners and developers in the design of new developments, helping to “design out” the opportunity for crime at the earliest possible stage of the process. If possible, I will encourage developers to consider applying for Secured by Design accreditation, which is a national police approved standard and enables me to be involved throughout the whole development process. Working in partnership with other agencies to address community concerns about crime “hotspots”

64 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JULY 2021

or incidents of repeated anti-social behaviour is also a key part of what a DOCO does. Sometimes it takes the involvement of several interested groups to bring about changes that result in an improvement but the process is all about addressing community concerns and long-standing issues and coming up with workable, practical and cost-effective solutions. A good example of partnership working of this kind, which resulted in significant changes, was at the Chrystie Recreation Ground in Bookham. Incidents of underage drinking, anti-social behaviour, drug use and criminal damage have decreased significantly since a complete refurbishment of the “club house”, additional security measures and improved lighting were implemented. It wasn’t an overnight success but, over time, a long-standing problem has diminished considerably. The way we get to know about local concerns and issues is when people report them, either to police or to the agency responsible, such as the local council. For example, we are currently working with the local council, councillors, local residents and other agencies in trying to “design out” crime at a number of locations throughout Mole Valley. This has only been possible due to the people who are being affected taking the time and trouble to report their concerns. Apart from calling 101 to report any ongoing concerns and issues to police, it is also easy to report any incidents online at the Surrey Police website www.surrey.police.uk - and it is even possible to submit an online report anonymously. The website is monitored constantly by the same team of people who respond to emergency calls to police.
