What a month it’s been; the weather has been all over the place, bright sun one day, full on heavy rain the next. My garden is growing like mad, but the flowers have taken a real beating from the rain, which is a bit of a shame. Then there was the high excitement of the Euro’s. Didn’t our lads do us proud! I’m no football expert but are penalties really the only way when the goal count is equal? How about the least yellow cards wins instead!? As well as football we have been treated to the highs and lows of Wimbledon, Cricket and Golf alike. Hampton Court Flower Show was enjoyed by many, it’s a very popular local event plus RHS Wisley continues to offer a tranquil escape if you love a pretty garden! It’s great to see that these big events and venues have been able to open and the vaccine is in no small way responsible for this I’m sure, but personally, I feel that a slightly slower return to normal would be a better plan. I for one, will be keeping my mask firmly on my face when in busy public places for the foreseeable! As well as all this sport and activity, ‘school’s out for summer’! Now that my family has grown and they are all post school age, we were able go away slightly ‘off peak’ season, so we popped off to Cornwall in June. We were blessed with wonderful weather every single day! We really enjoyed just spending time together, walking our dog and exploring the beautiful Cornish coastline. Barbecues in the long evenings, cooking for each other, playing silly games and generally chilling out. It really was bliss. I hope if you are going away this summer you have a great time too and the weather is kind to you. The UK really is a beautiful island! If you can’t get away this summer, this issue includes a selection of local events which hopefully will provide some fun times for all who attend. Events are not quite at pre-pandemic levels, but there is definitely enough to keep us occupied over the coming month. I wish you all a great August. Do stay safe and well. Warm Regards,

HAVING A SAY OVER NORBURY PARK One of the pleasures of living in Fetcham is its proximity to Norbury Park. The 1300-acre estate was bought by Surrey County Council 90 years ago to protect it from housing development and retain it as open green space. Several generations of Fetcham residents have enjoyed walking and riding there and, if time and energy allow, onwards to Denbies Vineyard, Polesden Lacey, Ranmore Common and Leith Hill. For the past 20 years or so, management of the estate was contracted to Surrey Wildlife Trust. But from April last year the County Council took back the management, leaving SWT to concentrate on the area’s habitat and biodiversity. This change and the Covid-19 pandemic meant that the Norbury Park Community Forum, has been effectively suspended since its last meeting in 2019. The Fetcham Residents Association welcomes the fact that this hiatus is now over and a reconstituted forum met once again in late June. As well as officers from Surrey County Council and the Wildlife Trust, the forum is made up of local councillors, representatives
from Residents Associations and other interest groups. Its revival is timely. Norbury Park has not been without its controversies, with plans (now abandoned) for a ‘glamping’ site, and concern over the extent of ash dieback tree felling. And this April saw the closure of the Norbury Sawmill, despite a petition to save it attracting more than 4,000 signatures. Now we have the prospect not only of a consultation over the future of the sawmill site, but also the chance to register our views over the management of the estate. This process is expected to begin soon after this magazine goes to press. One pressing issue is traffic. Existing car parks are on the edge of the area. But the sawmill site is towards the centre and there are concerns that new plans may lead to more traffic reaching further into the estate. Clearly there is a balance to be struck, but it’s vital that the tranquillity and the wildlife haven we value is not damaged by any hasty efforts to generate revenue, however well intentioned. If you would like to know more about the consultation process, you can register your interest at countryside.estate@surreycc.gov.uk Patrick Bisgood

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
Future Mole Valley – the Local Plan As you know, Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) Local Plan, covering 2020-2037 development plans across the district, has been in preparation for the past few years although its original timetable has been heavily affected by the pandemic and it is now well behind its original schedule. The initial public consultation on the Plan took place in February/March 2020 (postponed from an original date of June 2019); this was the Regulation 18 consultation during which all residents were invited to submit their comments on the development proposals for review and consideration by the Council. The planning system requires MVDC to have given due consideration to all the comments made during the initial consultation and record, with supporting explanations/evidence, what actions have been taken, or not taken, to amend the original draft of the Plan. The Planning Inspector will review all these actions/ non-actions during the formal examination of the finally-submitted version of the Plan. Throughout its review of the Regulation 18 consultation, MVDC has been continuing to prepare its preferred Local Plan and this will go out for public consultation as the Regulation 19 stage of the Plan’s development. This consultation, originally scheduled for late autumn 2020, is now planned to take place during the six weeks following the publication of MVDC’s preferred Plan on 15th September. In line with national planning policy, comments received during this phase of the Plan’s preparation will not result in any further changes to the Plan prior to its submission to the Planning Inspector; instead, all comments will be submitted to the Inspector for review during the examination of the Plan. MVDC will make its final decision to submit the Plan to the Inspectorate for examination on the 3 February 2022. Once submitted, the Plan will be in 14 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - AUGUST 2021
the hands of the Planning Inspectorate which will set the examination timetable, the topics the examination will cover and who will be invited to speak. We have no idea what changes will have been made to the Plan following the comments made during the Regulation 18 consultation and that has not been for lack of asking the question on a regular basis. MVDC Councillors and Officers have been very tight-lipped about any adjustments to the original draft Plan and we can only hope that note has been taken of the many concerns that the Association raised about the development proposals for Ashtead. Barnett Wood Lane resurfacing If on schedule, the planned resurfacing of Barnett Wood Lane should have begun on 20th July. The road closure order lasts for 17 months but Surrey Highways always give themselves plenty of leeway in case more urgent business crops up; we will advise of any delays and the duration of the closure when we learn more details - keep an eye on “Latest News” on our website. “Walk for Health” is Back MVDC has resumed its district-wide “Walk for Health” scheme, which provides a programme of fun, free and accessible weekly group walks that are ideal for anyone looking to become more active and meet new people. It can also, if advised by a doctor, assist with recovery from the long-term effects of Covid. The walks last from 30 to 90 minutes and are run in line with up-to-date Government COVID restrictions and advice. There are weekly walks in Dorking, North Holmwood, Buckland, Brockham, Bookham and Leatherhead and every walk is led by one or two friendly walk leaders. For more information on the walks, visit www.molevalley.gov.uk/walkforhealth or call 01306-885001. Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS YEAR?
Museum in Heritage Week
Leatherhead Museum is gradually moving towards normal operation this summer after nearly two years of closure because of the Covid-19 pandemic. A trial period is under way with openings of Hampton Cottage, Church Street, on Saturdays only and restricted numbers of visitors. But a formal unveiling of a blue plaque in memory of late L&DLHS president Linda Heath is scheduled in September on the west wall overlooking the garden and this is expected to mark a return to normality as the pandemic fades away. Volunteers have continued to maintain the Museum throughout its closure and important specialist contract work has also been undertaken. The mid-bay partition on the first floor has been reduced to open up the roof zone to enhance the spatial impact. Electrical improvements have been completed and certified, heaters repaired, the courtyard re-pointed, a new door added, and signage improved. Current displays include Local Buildings of Interest in watercolours by John Hassell and son (1780-1850). But the call is out for more volunteers to run the Museum as the number has fallen during the closure. For Heritage Weekend on Saturday, 18 September, the Museum will show a display of local historic maps. This will follow the L&DLHS contribution to 2021 Heritage Open Days on Friday, 17 September - a talk 18 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - AUGUST 2021
entitled Leatherhead Food - Chips with Everything. Local historian Bill Whitman was once a consultant at the Leatherhead Food Research Association in Randalls Road and will be speaking either on-line via Zoom or back at the L&DLHS’s traditional venue in the Abraham Dixon Hall at the Letherhead Institute. Either way it will start at 7.30pm with public confirmation of the format issued in good time ahead of the event. Despite the Museum’s closure, the Society has also remained active throughout the period with its programme of regular online lectures via Zoom organised in cooperation with Dorking Local History Group. What’s on offer changes frequently so it is best to visit the Surrey History MeetUp website to find the latest updates. 16 August: Searching for Inspector William Donaldson (1807-55) (Henry Pelham, Inspector Donaldson’s great great grandson, talks about the first serving policeman to be murdered on duty in Surrey.) Online talks in coming months include the following: 27 September: A history of Croydon High St until 1901 (Carole Roberts) 25 October: Canal History & Heritage (including Wey & Arun Canal) (Roger Butler) 22 November: Dissolution of the MonasteriesSuperstition, Scandal & Dodgy Dealings (Julia Hickey) 31 January: The South at Work, Surrey Glassmaking (Geoff Mead) 21 February: To Journey’s End – the Life of RC Sherriff (Pete Allen) 21 March: Quakers at War (in Surrey and elsewhere) (Frances Hurd)

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

New around here? If you recall when Windows 10 was first announced in July 2015, Microsoft stated that this would be their last ever release of Windows as they were planning to modify the product through updates and in-life changes. This was quite a bold statement! Well, yesterday they announced the release of Windows 11! Much detail is still to be revealed about Windows 11 during the forthcoming weeks, but here are some initial pointers: • Anticipated release date November 2021 • Free to any Windows 10 user-via online download • New Windows look and appearance • Will run Android apps • Better Teams integration • Improved Gaming environment and support • New Windows Store app-with loads of apps that work!! If your machine is running Windows 10, there is no guarantee that it will run Windows 11. Microsoft has released a compliance checker, which you can run on your machine and be told if your machine will run Windows 11. This compliance checker is available from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-11#pchealthcheck To find out more about Windows 11 please go to: https://www.microsoft. com/en-us/windows/windows-11 A lot more will appear on this matter so please stay tuned.
Customer Service We talk to many customers who are really unhappy with the level of customer service they receive from their (large Corporate) providers and some scenarios just beggar belief. This is a brief summary of one such example from Simon: “I received an email from Norton informing me that they don’t have my correct billing information for my next subscription and would I update my details through this email. This seemed odd so I rang Norton and got an operator in Columbia who I really struggled to understand, so much so, that I asked to be transferred to another operator. This time, I spoke to somebody in the Philippines who said the email was genuine but really wasn’t definitive about this. The upshot of all this, is again, in dealing with operators overseas, it does in my mind add to the anxiety of the situation in trying to resolve the issue. The first operator thought the Norton email WAS indeed a scam so, again, depending on who you talk to, you get a different view. Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart Multiple prize winner. Shuggie Bain is the unforgettable story of young Hugh “Shuggie” Bain, a sweet and lonely boy who spends his 1980s childhood in a run-down public housing estate in Glasgow. Agnes Bain had always expected more. She dreamed of greater things, a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright. When her philandering husband leaves, she and her three children find themselves trapped in a mining town decimated by Thatcherism. As Agnes increasingly turns to alcohol for comfort, her children try their best to save her. Yet one by one they have to abandon her in order to save themselves. Shuggie is meanwhile struggling to somehow become the normal boy he desperately longs to be. Laying bare the ruthlessness of poverty, the limits of love, and the hollowness of pride and an exploration of the unsinkable love that only children can have for their damaged parents. A blistering and poignant debut by a brilliant writer with a powerful and important story to tell.
The Missing Sister by Lucinda Riley The six D’Aplièse sisters have each been on their own incredible journey to discover their heritage, but they still have one question left unanswered: who and where is the seventh sister? They only have one clue – an image of a star-shaped emerald ring. The search to find the missing sister will take them across the globe; from New Zealand to Canada, England, France and Ireland, uniting them all in their mission to at last complete their family. In doing so, they will slowly unearth a story of love, strength and sacrifice that began almost one hundred years ago, as other brave young women risk everything to change the world around them. The Missing Sister is the seventh book in this amazing series by Lucinda Riley, but you should read the first six books first!
The President’s Daughter by Bill Clinton and James Patterson There’s a new administration in the White House. But it’s the previous First Family who tops an international assassin’s hit list. Michael Keating is a former Navy SEAL -- and a former President of the United States, now relocated to rural New Hampshire after a brave but ill-fated military mission cost him his second term. All he wants is to sink into anonymity with his family (and his Secret Service detail). But when he’s briefed on an imminent threat against his daughter, Keating’s SEAL training may prove more essential than all the power, connections, and political acumen he gained as President.

RJ CLINIC RESTORE • REJUVENATE • REPAIR
STEP INTO SUMMER
Summer is a time where we see many injuries and re-occurrences of old injuries in our clinic due to that urge to be out in the garden, or to play a round of golf or even start a new exercise regime (this will be especially pertinent this year as lockdown gradually lifts)
So when the sun comes out, please do... 1. Be mindful about yourself and your posture. 2. Change your activity often (weed for 15 minutes, mow the lawn for 15 mins, dig for 15 mins) and then rest for 15 minutes. Gather your thoughts, gather your aches and pains and re-assess. 3. A simple warm up to raise your body temperature (walking is fine). 4. Drink plenty of water. 5. Ice any known areas of concern and any stretches you may know or have been taught in the past for your condition afterwards (like knee hugs, or the pelvic bridge exercises).
But mainly - don’t over do it and seek advice if you start to feel any niggles or pain.
“Our passion is to get fast results, help you understand what is wrong and how to help yourself” We love helping people out of pain, if you have any questions and would like to know more, please just give us a call 01372 363 721 or email us on info@rjclinic.co.uk Check out our website www.rjclinic.co.uk

Leatherhead and District u3a. Could it be for you? Are you over 55? Retired or partly retired? Looking for a new hobby? Wish to meet new friends socially or in an interest group? If all or some of these questions apply to you then look no further. The Leatherhead and District u3a is a branch of the national u3a and operates in the district of Leatherhead. We have around 250 members and over 30 different activity groups ranging from antiques and collectables to wine appreciation, and many in between. If you join us and fancy pursuing a new or different subject then there is an opportunity to start a new group. It’s as easy as that. During the pandemic we have been meeting monthly on Zoom, with a coffee morning or afternoon tea between the meetings to keep members in touch. Hopefully from October we shall resume our face to face monthly meetings at Fetcham Village Hall on the 3rd Thurs of every month (except August) at 2pm.
46 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - AUGUST 2021
We always have an excellent speaker at these meetings and in the last year the subjects have been as diverse as a talk on the West Horsley Turkey farm to the gardens at Hever Castle in Kent. As well as the monthly meetings we organise trips out and holidays. This year we are going to Wales in September and in 2022 we travel to South Devon. As we are not meeting in August, our next Zoom meeting with be on the 23rd September when Conor Morrow will be talking about the work of the Lower Mole Partnership which carries out practical countryside improvements with the help of volunteers. If you are interested in being a member of your local u3a please contact : David Wall on 01372 374773 / 07742 273 618 or email dandswall@btinternet.com. David Wall – Vice Chairman
WHAT’S ON
Rotary
in Ashtead How has the Ashtead Rotary Club been coping in these constrained times? We have maintained our club activities on Zoom every Thursday evening with many fascinating speakers. More recently we have been able to get out and about with fun new activities including a sponsored “5K May” sponsored walk raising £350 for Rhianna’s Fund and the Children’s Trust and we followed this up with a fresh Rotary initiative “End Plastic Soup” beginning Ashtead Spring Clean with our own litter pick on 5th June and with the intention of examining how to eliminate the use of plastic in our daily lives.
again, we have deployed reserves to support good causes and astonishingly we have been able to make donations of £20,000 in the last 12 months – partly through Just Giving campaigns. Examples of the latter are Beirut Disaster (£1825) and the Indian Covid Leatherhead Community Fridge Crisis (£4135). Local examples: Mid Surrey Community Fridge to which we donated £1643 and to Barnett Wood Lane Infant School helping to fund a Den.
We are introducing a relaxed new format with a six week cycle of not only meetings at the Cock Inn, Headley but projects, outings and informal pub/wine bar evenings in Ashtead and coffee mornings for anyone locally who wishes to come along. Recent events have been in the Leg of Mutton and the Olive Tree Café. Planned outings include Silent Pool Distillery, pub darts and skittles, the Hog’s Back Brewery, a London walk and a walk to the Centenary Woods at Langley Vale with refreshments.
STOP PRESS: the Club is planning a totally free to enter PARTY IN THE PARK at the Queen Elizabeth Playing Fields on Saturday 11th September. Bring your own picnic and drinks and enjoy the music of Junction 9. Details will be found on the Ashtead Rotary website and social media in due course.
We welcome enquiries from prospective new members and in addition we have successfully launched an Associate Member category which allows local people who do not currently have time to commit to full Rotary Membership, to join with us on projects and activities for a modest fee of £20 and with a view to becoming full members in the future. We have had five new people join us recently on this basis. Although our funds have been greatly depleted by the forced cancellation of Ashtead Village Day
New Rotary team for 2021-22

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead How do I heat my home in Net-Zero UK? The UK has a legal commitment to be Net-Zero in terms of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050, this to be achieved by a combination of emission reduction and emission removal. Most energy in buildings is used for heating. A national plan for reducing emissions from this sector is on the cards, including banning gas boilers in new buildings from 2025 and possibly banning the sale of gas boilers altogether from the mid-2030s (the scale is significant - about 1.6million gas boilers were sold in the UK in 2020!). This is going to be a major exercise in planning for this scale of investment while ensuring those in fuel poverty are covered as well. There are nearly 28 million homes in the UK and the replacement rate is currently well under 1% per year, so we cannot rely on leaving the solution to the new homes yet to be built by 2050. We do now need to think about how to decarbonise our own household heating - 85% of UK homes are currently heated by burning gas which produces carbon dioxide - one of the GHGs which we need to significantly reduce. One of the options for individual households is electric heating, and in particular air-source heat pumps. These are like refrigerators (or air conditioning units) in reverse. They take the heat from the air outside and deliver it as warm air or hot water (usually not as hot as a gas boiler can produce) inside. They are about three times more efficient in using electricity to produce heat as a normal electric fire, but the problem lies in the need for a sometimes bulky (and possibly moderately noisy) piece of equipment to be installed on the outside wall of the house and they are not cheap. Another problem is that many buildings, including flats, do not have anywhere to install such equipment externally, so some forms of communal solutions will need to found to get around this. Another alternative is to produce hydrogen (from renewably-sourced energy) and pump it through the existing gas distribution system and burn it in modified gas boilers. There are “hydrogen ready” gas boilers that are equipped to be able to simply swap from burning natural gas to hydrogen when it becomes available. Burning hydrogen produces no significant GHGs. Such a solution has far lower capital costs and infrastructure requirements but using renewable electricity to generate hydrogen isn’t very efficient. But it is thought that maybe up to 20% of homes could use this approach. However, for us right now, improving the thermal insulation of our own home is really important - the more efficient our home insulation, the smaller any replacement boiler will need to be. Retrofitting our leaky homes will deliver substantial benefits now - reduced heating budgets, lower personal carbon budgets and improved thermal comfort. It will save us money in the long run, and help the country to move towards Net-Zero. But, never-the-less, we will have some tricky decisions to make in a few years’ time on how to heat our homes.

HOME WANTED! Bomber
A special ADULT ONLY home is needed for Bomber, with people who are experienced in handing nervous ex-strays; no children or other pets.. Bomber is a large, handsome black cat with expressive eyes and aged about 7 years. He is an ex stray who came into care and it would appear that he had been ill-treated in the past and not lived in a home for a long time. He will need access via a cat flap to a very safe garden
If you could give Bomber his forever home, please contact Sue for further information on 020 8390 3165.
Over the past few weeks he has relaxed a little and is now a very chatty cat who loves his food and rubs around your legs quite happily, but that’s as far as it goes! Although still a ‘work in progress’ he needs to continue his rehabilitation in a home where he has space and people around, to flourish.. He will be a challenge but it will be so rewarding to watch him blossom into the lovely cat we know he is Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk
In line with Cats Protection guidelines, we are only homing cats in the local areas of: KT5,6,9, KT17-23, SM7 and RH3-5 BUT may be flexible for the right home
If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

Summer Security Advice NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
This time last year, we were all living in very unfamiliar and unsettling circumstances. We had to learn very quickly how to adapt to new ways of managing our lives day to day, including work, being able to see family and friends, shopping and learning and adapting to all the new rules and regulations that had an impact on every aspect of our normal existence. In terms of my role, I was restricted in terms of where I work, what I could do and who I could visit -and had to learn to be more imaginative in terms of trying to help our community with concerns about security and crime prevention. I did a lot more communicating advice via email and over the phone - which presented its own challenges and even managed to give a couple of group presentations and carry out security assessments using Zoom!! In spite of some technical hiccups, eventually things became more manageable and effective, thank goodness! Along with everyone else, I hope that by the time you read this we may be moving back towards a life that resembles something approximating “normal” again? So, with people actually being able to plan trips away, or holidays - even with some possible restrictions remaining - it is really important to remind ourselves of what needs to be done to make our homes as secure as possible when we are not there. 62 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - AUGUST 2021
Obviously, people will lock their doors when they are out but don’t forget to do the same with windows and take the key out of the locks so they cannot be seen from outside. If you have an intruder alarm, please set it when you are going away and ask neighbours to gather up any post that may be visible from the outside. Consider using timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern to give the impression of occupancy and movement throughout your home. Make sure that access to the rear of your property is secure and bolt any side gates from the inside. Also, remove any climbing aids such as wheelie bins to make it more difficult for someone to climb over a side gate easily. Lock away any garden tools and equipment and make items less attractive to thieves by marking them with a brightly coloured gloss paint with your home post code, house name or a unique symbol or shape. You can also get battery-powered, motion-activated audible alarms to put inside a shed or outbuilding. If triggered, they make a very loud noise which is likely to attract the attention of neighbours. If you do use this type of alarm, it would be a good idea to let your neighbours know and show them how to deactivate it!
