to October!
There’s certainly a bit of a Nip in the Air today! Not surprising, given that we are fast approaching the time of year when our clocks turn back an hour. Sunday 31st October is the date this year, so we still have a couple of weeks to savour the lighter evenings. As regular readers will know, we have enjoyed a long relationship with the Leatherhead & District Local History Society. It’s always a pleasure to include their interesting local features, and this month is no exception, especially when they have kindly written about us! See page 18 for the low down …. It’s been a while since our last competition, so we thought a fun ‘Find the Pumpkin’ Cash Prize Draw might go down well? Enter by email for the chance to win £25. See page 20 for details and remember, ‘You’ve got to be in it, to win it !’ Also included this month, we have a fab little book review; an historic novel ‘King Oak’, by Catherine Arthur, is set in 1780 in the very local vicinity! It is amazing to hear mention of many well known landmarks and buildings, and for me, knowing these places so well, makes it even more fascinating to imagine that they have been in situ for so long. A mix of history and fiction comes alive as you turn the pages… This would make a wonderful Christmas gift - turn our pages to find out more! Wishing you all a good month ahead, Keep Well, until next time,

A home for life - providing for your pet’s future If a dog is a man’s best friend, then making sure that they (or any other pet) are provided for if something happens to you will be a priority for all animal lovers. The good news is that you can make provision in your Will for what will happen to your pet when you die. It is not possible to make a gift to your pet, however, it is important to take advice so that a correctly drafted clause can be included in your Will to name someone you would like to take care of them.
If you cannot think of anyone who could look after your pet, there are many animal charities that run free schemes to rehome and provide for them. If this is something you are considering, we can work with you and your chosen charity to incorporate the right clause into your Will to reflect your wishes. Some charities also have schemes that you join independently of preparing your Will, in relation to the future care of your pet.
The first consideration is who you would like to look after your pet? Once you have decided this, it is sensible to discuss with that person whether he or she would be happy to take on this responsibility. Another consideration is funding the care of your pet for the rest of their life, including food, pet insurance and future veterinary and boarding costs. It is possible to make a gift to whomever you have requested to look after your pet, to cover the costs of their future care. This gift can be conditional on that person taking over responsibility for your pet. However, professional advice should be sought to ensure that the correct wording and clauses are used. Additionally, you should consider providing in your Will not only for your current pet, but also any pets you may have at the time of your death. It is also possible to name a substitute beneficiary to care for your pet in the event that your first choice is unable to do so, or dies before you.
Providing for your pet(s) in your Will is the best way to ensure that they will be looked after when you die. However, consideration should also be given to what will happen to your pet if you become unwell or lose mental capacity. Preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney for your property and financial affairs is essential for this, as it allows you to give authority to your attorney to manage your affairs and finances. This means that making provision for your pet and tasks such as paying for vets’ bills or for temporary care can be dealt with by your attorney. We will be pleased to advise and assist with any aspect of matters mentioned above.

This month we caught up with one of our new clients, Neil Dickins, to show him around his new property. Within three weeks of the house purchase we did all external work identified by the survey as needing attention and internal beautification to bring it up to spec before the first guests arrived. Tell us a little about yourself? “I fell in love with theatre whilst at McMaster Uni in Canada, and was told I must go to London. I duly came to study Shakespeare but became ensnared in the thorns of an English rose (the red of Lancashire version) and never left.” What do you do? “I founded Intellectual Capital Resources (IC Resources) 22 years ago to focus on ‘deep tech’ recruitment (all the tech that’s in your phone, or a satellite, or an electric car….ie everything except IT). The company is now 70 people with offices in Reading, London, Munich, China and the US.” What were you hoping to achieve when making an investment with BTLH? “I make very high risk, seed stage investments in tech companies, and wanted an investment to balance my portfolio. Like all assets, property values fluctuate but the likely downside compared to stocks (or early stage companies!!) is lower.” Why did you choose BTLH? “For me the most critical word in seeking success is ‘niche’. I loved the niche, under-represented ‘mid-term let’ idea as outlined by Adrian. My due diligence consisted of meeting his business partners Alex and Lucy, who also impressed me greatly and convinced me that the company was solid and would deliver on its promises. Advertising feature
The great thing about BTLH is the space it has carved out for itself needs a particular kind of focus and attention, which I don’t think potential competitors will understand even if they try to emulate BTLH. The other reason, of course, is that the ROI makes sense.” What has your experience been working with BTLH? “Excellent from the outset. I’m 100% confident that the outstanding service levels will continue. We’ve also rented the house out for a brilliant medium-term rental even before it has been listed, which I’m sure is a positive portent of things to come.” Any advice to someone else who might find themselves in your situation? “Call me to invest in some crazy risky early stage tech companies. Eschew sensible investments like BTLH!” So… if you find yourself looking for an investment all piquant with crazy risk and excitement, contact Neil Dickins direct to hand over your hard-earned cash for him to invest in some dodgy early stage tech companies – and if you feel more like Neil, then get in touch with BTLH and see if we can find you a little gem like his so you can make a sensible investment. Neil’s parting words to us were: “I might start thinking about my next project with you guys…” You heard it here first! Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
CCTV in Mole Valley For 20 years, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has deployed a CCTV network across the District and the delivery of the network has always been based on a partnership approach between the Council and Surrey Police. The arrangement has been that MVDC paid for the equipment, the maintenance and the signalling and Surrey Police covered the cost of the staff and premises for the monitoring operation that, at the moment, is based at Reigate Police Station. There are in the region of 50 cameras in the Mole Valley network, covering town and village centres and some public open spaces, but Surrey Police has made the decision to pull out of the CCTV monitoring. For it to continue, MVDC will be required to increase its budget to cover the additional costs for staff and premises. The Council is currently looking at options for that but as a new provider has not yet been identified, the additional costs cannot yet be firmed up; it’s thought that costs are likely to be double the current budget plus the transfer costs required to make the move. Surrey Police has indicated that a small amount of ongoing funding may be provided but, if that goes ahead, the level of contribution to costs is unlikely to be equivalent to the additional money that MVDC will have to find. Along with our colleagues in the Bookham, Fetcham and Leatherhead Residents’ Associations, we have repeatedly raised this issue with MVDC Officers over the past year and will continue to do so until we are reassured that funding has been allocated to ensure the continued operation of the CCTV network. In these days of cash-strapped Councils, we do not want to see CCTV provision and monitoring being abandoned for lack of funds. Neighbourhood Policing Update At a recent briefing from Police Sergeant Lee Wells, we learned that the Chief Constable is enthusiastic about ensuring that more officers are assigned to 12 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - OCTOBER 2021
Neighbourhood Policing; one former North Mole Valley officer has already returned to his post in the area and 3 further officers will be joining the team in December. We also learned that there has been increased catalytic convertor theft throughout the North and South of the district. The police can provide kits to combat this theft; please email molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk if you would like one. AVN editor We are looking for someone to take over as the editor of Ashtead Village News. The AVN editor gathers and edits content for the newsletter, which is published each spring and autumn. The newsletter provides information on local issues, along with updates and news on the work of the ARA and the activities of Ashtead’s community organisations, sports clubs, and special interest groups. If you have an interest in this role, please email chairman@ashteadresidents.org. uk to discuss it further. ARA Autumn Meeting For the first time since our Autumn Meeting in 2019, we will be back in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall for a public meeting and holding this year’s Autumn Meeting in person. The date is Wednesday, 20th October and doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start. Our guest speaker is Peter Wakeham, a local botanist, and Chairman of the Downlands Trust. The Trust is a registered charity that funds conservation work in this area to maintain chalk grassland, an internationally rare habitat. Peter is also Secretary of the Surrey Botanical Society and records the flora of the local area. The second half of the meeting will be a Q&A session with our District and County Councillors. Hope to see you there! Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

Norbury Park
Many residents were sad to see the closure of the Norbury Sawmill in April and remain concerned about what Surrey County Council has in mind to replace it. This month the Norbury Park Community Forum (to which the FRA sends a representative) will hear an update from the Surrey countryside team. It’s concerning too that the Council now looks set to publish proposals for the site ahead of any consultation. Previously, we had been led to understand that a consultation would happen in advance of any proposals. The Council is putting some of the delay down to the need to upgrade water and power supplies. In the meantime the Forum should be hearing about the wider ‘vision’ for the whole of the Park. We are strongly opposed to any developments which could encourage more traffic beyond the perimeter car parks.
SWR rail services
There’s been a good deal of push back towards South Western Railway over its plans to reduce our rail services from the end of next year. The FRA was asked by SWR to give its views, and we are firmly opposed. In particular, we are opposed to making hasty decisions
now, when so much of our post-Covid world remains uncertain. SWR is proposing that off-peak services from Bookham and Dorking be reduced to one train an hour from the pre-Covid level of two, and peak services through to Dorking be reduced to two per hour, down from four an hour, pre-Covid. We understand the need to save money but we think there are bigger issues at stake. If the London economy is to fully recover, surely the rail industry should not be making it harder for people from Surrey to reach the capital by running fewer trains. And with air pollution from road transport an increasing concern, do we want to further encourage people into their cars? You can read more about the plans by Googling SWR timetable consultation, but we hope the rail company has spotted that the signal on this one is showing red.
Wild verges
The Fetcham Blue Hearts initiative to encourage wild flowers on many of our verges has been a great success. In fact it has been remarkable to see that flowers were still appearing in much of the long grass quite late in the season. We’re looking forward to an even bigger and better display next year.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
A HAPPY PARTNERSHIP
Around autumn 2003, a certain free magazine started appearing in letterboxes throughout the Leatherhead district and beyond every month. The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local went to addresses in those areas plus Fetcham, while Look Local circulated in Bookham, Cobham, Esher and Weybridge. With separate editors, Zen George in Ashtead and Ros Redfern in Bookham, they ran as completely different businesses. However, the areas were so close and shared so many contributors and advertisers that the two quickly established some ground rules and worked fairly closely together. For many years, Leatherhead historian Goff Powell provided a monthly potted histories page for Zen George’s magazine and these are now all archived Goff Powell on the L&DLHS website. When Zen decided to move away from the area, she asked Ros if she was interested in adding the Ashtead & Leatherhead Local to her own family of Local magazines. With negotiations completed, the production process for all editions was extended smoothly. After Goff’s death in 2018, his role was picked up by L&DLHS Newsletter Editor Tony Matthews 18 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - OCTOBER 2021
and the two Local editions covering the Leatherhead district now both contain regular contributions from the Society, helping to keep the L&DLHS and Leatherhead Museum in the public eye. Articles have covered everything from Museum exhibitions and newly published local history books to the Society’s regular lectures, both those at the Letherhead Institute and after the advent of lockdowns, on Zoom too. Readers have learned of Bamber Gascoigne’s talk on West Horsley Place, Mark Davison on metal detecting, and Lucy Quinnell on the archaeology of Rowhurst, the Fire & Iron Gallery. Other speakers have covered historical utilities at Polesden Lacey, the contrasting owners of what is now the Beaverbrook Hotel, London’s secret gardens, hedgerows in the landscape, the emergence of spas for bathing, forensic studies of crime scenes, the follies of historical fashions, spies in Surrey, and even the adolescent pen pal of Donald Trump’s Scottish mother! There have been many more and the list goes on. The Local series has twice won awards for innovation and excellence as Community Magazine of the Year and Lifestyle Magazine of the Year. Editor Ros and her three- strong team all grew up and attended schools locally, living most of their lives in this part of Surrey and the magazines obviously benefit from their local knowledge. There are no plans to expand further as the existing family keeps them more than busy. Ros summarised: ‘We very much enjoy our collaboration with the Leatherhead History Society, long may it last.’ For more information go to Tony Matthews www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Wifi solutions- getting covered The requirements to have better coverage for your Wifi appear to be increasing daily, especially with more devices requiring internet connection than ever before. Yes, this could be upstairs in the kids bedrooms, in the study or in the new garden office. There is a product which is low in cost, simple to install, works brilliantly and offers some really useful features-which really makes you ask “Why did I not do this before?” The specific product I am referring to is the TP Link Deco E4 - 3 pack and costs just £150.00 As its name implies, the kit consists of 3 units (transmitters), one unit plugs into your router with the other two units linking between themselves. Usually they are positioned in areas near where you have signal weaknesses. The system uses “MESH” technology and, in short, this means that as you move between different areas the transmitters cover, the transmitter with the stronger signal will take your connection to ensure you always have the strongest and most resilient connection. This also means you have the same wifi network covering the whole property, making the connection of devices much simpler. We have sold many of these units and have been impressed with how simple they are to setup by many, non technical home users. Usually they are up and running within 10 minutes. We best recommend the use of the free smart phone/tablet app, which helps you setup the units quickly, and offers many useful facilities like “bedtime” mode, which turns the Wifi off at predetermined times and days of the week. You also can setup different Wifi active times for different devices. For example: your 10 year old child can only have wifi access until 7pm, whereas your 16 year old child’s device can have access until 10pm. With some of the apps you can also “content control”. This can block access to unsuitable websites from specific devices by category, such as “adult content”, or “firearms content”. You also can specify specific websites you may want to block by typing in the website address.
Know your stuff….. Recently, we have been reporting on the number and type of scams at the moment. We feel a large part of the scammers success is that they catch you when you are least expecting their call, and logic and reason just go straight out of the window. For example, a common scam is where they call supposedly being BT, and saying your Broadband is reporting problems. They obviously use BT as they are the UK’s largest Broadband provider, but if you are with Virgin Media or Talk Talk or Tec Res, why would BT be calling you to discuss the service they do not provide? The simple answer is they wouldn’t be! We urge you to always be vigilant and sceptical on these calls. Do not enter into a detailed conversation with the caller. Stop the call by hanging up and don’t use your phone for 5 minutes (as this will terminate their call). Should you have any concerns, independently find the phone number of the firm in question, and call them yourself-it is very rare that these “big” firms will be calling you.

The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

QUIZ
Song Titles & Artists What’s the song & who sang it?
QUESTIONS: 1. It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday. The regular crowd shuffles in. There’s an old man sittin’ next to me. Makin’ love to his tonic and gin. 2. I’m nothing special. In fact I‘m a bit of a bore. If I tell a joke you’ve probably heard it before. 3. It’s a girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford, slowin’ down to take a look at me. 4. And he asks you where you have been. You tell him who you’ve seen and you talk about anything. 5. Runnin’ down the avenue. See how the sun shines brightly in the city. 6. But the dawn is breakin’. It’s early morn. The taxi’s waitin’. He’s blowin’ his horn. 7. Why do stars fall down from the sky every time you walk by? 8. City girls just seem to find out early how to open doors with just a smile. 9. Face to face. Each classic case. We shadow box and double cross. Yet need the chase. 10. I guess I should’ve kept my mouth shut when I started to brag about my car, but I can’t back down now because I pushed the other guys to far. FIRE & LIGHT TRAIL COMES TO POLESDEN LACEY THIS OCTOBER
A new after-dark experience is coming to the Edwardian gardens at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey this autumn. From 22 October - 7 November, visitors will have the chance to see Polesden Lacey like never before at the first-ever IGNITE at Polesden Lacey. Deep in the Surrey Hills, only four miles from Dorking, Polesden Lacey was once home to the famous Edwardian hostess Margaret Greville, who entertained royalty and the celebrities of her time. The gardens offer something for every season and autumn is no exception: once the vibrant and rich greens of summer disappear the whole estate is encompassed in gold as the leaves turn. As twilight falls, the IGNITE magic begins. Expect the unexpected, with glimpses of fairies that could be dancing in lanterns, fiery fish and woodland wildlife sculpted in willow, as you stroll through an enchanting landscape. Lit by lanterns, wander between flickering flames and majestic trees - from one amazing space to another - on a quietly magical meander. Within this fiery interpretation of flora and fantasy, set to an atmospheric soundscape, there are moments of playful discovery and reflection. 30 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - OCTOBER 2021
The trail has been specially designed for visitors of all ages to enjoy. “We’re so excited to welcome visitors to Polesden Lacey for this enchanting trail this autumn. It is the first time we’ve hosted something like this at Polesden Lacey and we can’t wait to see the gardens illuminated in such a magical way,” said Katherine Mills, National Trust General Manager for Polesden Lacey. IGNITE trails are brought to you by Sony Music and hosted by the National Trust. The trail is created by Culture Creative. Tickets: Advanced from... Adult £15, Child £10.00, Family £45 (2 adults & 2 children). Free entry for carers & children 2 & under. Parking is £7 per car & free for National Trust members. HOME WANTED! Barnaby
Barnaby is a lovely gentle male, black (with white flecks) approximately 3 years old. He came into care as he was living as a stray and despite all attempts, we were unable to locate his owners. KING OAK
(The Common Series) By Catherine Arthur
June 2021 Self-published ISBN: 9783033083516
Imagine. Ashtead Common, the year 1780. Watch. Listen. The inhabitants of the hamlet of Woodfield are going about their business. Step back in time, when lives were harsh, miserable, poor, but loyalties were strong. The cottages of the woods were cold and damp. Take away the railway, the road and replace them with dirt tracks rutted and slow; walk them in the dead of night. Go back and light a candle in the church of St Giles, or call in at the pub, the Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower, ever present to give solace of a different kind. Listen at the door of The Running Horse, Leatherhead; a meeting place of skulduggery away from prying eyes. The King Oak is standing proud, a source of superstition and magical powers. Life is hard; Molly must make money to feed her son and look after her grandmother in the old, broken-down cottage they share. Her husband, George, is keeping bad company at the Leg of Mutton and won’t be long, he says...
Q&A WITH THE AUTHOR: What appealed to you about Ashtead as the setting for your story? I was born in Epsom Hospital and lived near the pond in Ashtead for the first five years of 56 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - OCTOBER 2021
my life. While I was doing some family research, I discovered that loads of my direct ancestors lived in Woodfield. I was quite surprised, as I had no idea that the view from our living room in Barnet Wood Lane, across the Oxmoor pond and over towards Ashtead Common (which I remember well) was of an area where so many of my great-great (and greater!) grandparents lived, worked and played. As I uncovered their stories, I realised that the Woodfield community was incredibly close - their names appear in the St Giles registry books for generation after generation - until the railway came in 1859 and most of them got on the train and left. Which of your characters would you most like to meet for a drink in the Leg and why? It has to be Molly. I’m planning to write a blog about cooking in the 18th century, so she might be able to help. What herbs did she collect from The Common to flavour the stews her husband George likes so much? Did she ever cook puddings? I’ve just bought a piece of muslin and my first adventure will be a plain boiled pudding with wine sauce. She might have used gin though ... not sure that would have been as nice! I think I would learn a lot from her, if she stayed sober... Available to buy on Amazon.

Princess Alice Hospice
reduces its festive carbon footprint
Volunteer buyer, Leo Tye
While most parents are busy getting into the swing of the new academic year, Retail workers at Princess Alice Hospice are already focusing their thoughts on Christmas. They believe it’s never too early to start planning for the festive season, which means Hospice Christmas cards are already being snapped up by customers and supporters, both in the Hospice shops and online. The sourcing of the cards that the Hospice sells begins well in advance. The past few years have seen the Hospice focus on recycling and Responsible Sourcing to help the environment and reduce their carbon footprint. This year the Hospice has researched festive products that are kinder to the environment and also more sustainable. Their new range of Christmas cards will be completely recyclable, including the packaging, so there’s no plastic, foiling, glitter or cellophane. The range features all new designs in recyclable boxes which contain embossed, cut out and multi-folded cards, but the price range remains the same – from £2.00 to 60 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - OCTOBER 2021
£6.00 for a box of 10 cards and with 100% of profits going to Princess Alice Hospice. Volunteer buyer, Leo Tye, is responsible for sourcing the cards and told us, “I am so pleased that we have managed to make such a step forward in Responsible Sourcing and our smart new boxes. We have also included a QR code for additional donations to our charity.” The sale of Christmas cards for Princess Alice Hospice raises vital funds each year, which in turn help to ensure the compassionate care continues for patients and families. Christmas Crackers are also new for 2021 and are recyclable too, with the crackers themselves and their contents containing no plastic. If you would like to buy Christmas cards and crackers and support the Hospice, the easiest way to secure your order is online, at www.pah.org.uk/ christmascards or by visiting your local Princess Alice Hospice shop; you can find your local one here: www.pah.org.uk/shops

Mike Bessent
Crime Reduction Advisor & Designing Out Crime Officer NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
This month, I was trying to think of what to write about in terms of crime prevention and then decided to share with you some news about a colleague who many residents of Mole Valley will remember very well. My colleague, Mike Bessent, sadly died on the 11th June from a brain tumour which was only diagnosed last December. Mike underwent extensive treatments to try to halt the progress of the cancer but, tragically, this was not successful and he died peacefully at home with his wife and family by his side. My reason for mentioning Mike is that, for many years, he was the Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley and was my predecessor in the role that I currently hold. I had known Mike for several years before moving into the field of crime prevention myself and, in many ways, he was my mentor, support, guide and valued friend. Mike was a long-serving police officer who recognised the vital importance of crime prevention as part of an officer’s role. He trained in his specialist field and developed his knowledge and experience through the years to offer his expert advice to so many people. Like me, he visited victims of burglary, advised residents about home and property security, carried out security reviews of locations and business premises and advised on planning applications in terms of trying to “design out” the opportunity for crime. Mike had a natural ability to come up with practical and imaginative solutions to problems and was an enthusiastic champion of neighbourhood policing

and problem solving involving the actual community in the decision making process. In recent years, Mike had moved over to Elmbridge to carry out this role over there but we were in very regular contact with each other, often several times a week, and his advice was always so helpful. I just felt that there are some people in the community you would want to know this news. Mike will be very sorely missed by all his colleagues but also by the wider community he served loyally for so many years. Here are a just a few of the crime reduction tips that Mike taught me: 1. Use timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern to give the impression that your home is occupied and people are moving about. 2. Remove obvious climbing aids, such as wheelie bins, which could help a burglar to climb to the back of your house - the most popular point of entry for a burglar. 3. Never leave window and door keys in locks, as they are very attractive as a method of entry to a would-be burglar. 4. Consider using some dusk-till-dawn lighting outside your home to remove areas of shadow and to enhance the impression of occupancy. 5. If you have an intruder alarm, please use it and, if not, consider getting one as they are known to be a very strong deterrent against burglary. All common sense and very practical ideas that I have used when giving advice over the years. Thanks, Mike!!

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead
The great outdoors Green space and the great outdoors have a significant impact on the environment, society and the economy. Our green spaces provide flood protection by holding back water, reducing air pollution and helping to buffer unwanted noise. They also enable wildlife to flourish and help us in the fight against climate change by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. We all know that getting outside makes us feel good. According to a study from researchers at the Universities of Warwick, Newcastle and Sheffield, living within 300m of urban green space such as parks, nature reserves or play areas is associated with greater happiness, sense of worth, and life satisfaction. In the first study of its kind, they found that an increase of 1 hectare – about the size of an international Rugby Union pitch – within 300m of residents was associated with an increase of 8 percentage points in life satisfaction, 7 points in selfworth and 5 points in happiness. Green spaces provide opportunities for physical activity and social interaction. Several studies show that when people spend time in green space there is a marked reduction in biological indicators of stress such as cortisol. These positives of green space deliver economic benefit by helping keep the workforce happy and healthier, leading to fewer sick days and higher productivity. Managed green space can also provide materials into the economy such as wood, honey and other natural products. We are so lucky across Ashtead and Leatherhead to have a vast amount of green space such as Ashtead Common, Ashtead Park, River Lane Open Space and Fetcham Splash, Norbury Park and Rye Meadows to mention just a few. Our green spaces are managed in different ways, some by Mole Valley, others like the Rye Meadows and Ashtead Common by private owners. Ashtead Common, with its 200-hectare of public open space and its vast natural and cultural history, is an extraordinary resource on our doorstep. The City of London, owners of the Common, have developed a 10-year management plan describing the need for management, the vision with associated aims and targets and the work plan for the next 10 years. As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which is home to over 1000 ancient oak pollard trees and thousands of species, the Common is a prime example of the environmental and social value generated by green space. The common is also rich with cultural associations and evidence of past settlement. We must protect the benefits of green space for future generations. When recently walking on Ashtead Common I was so sad to see graffiti on some of the ancient oaks. The fantastic ranger team will quickly respond to clean it off, however it just should not be there in the first place. We all have a role to play in teaching each other and our children of the need to respect nature. We can do this by ensuring we spend time outside with our friends and families, helping everyone understand the value and importance of green spaces.
