Well! That was a slightly underwhelming summer, weather wise, wasn’t it? I hope many of you managed to have some time off to relax and catch up with friends and family over the past weeks despite the mixed bag of weather! On that note, if you are interested in finding out more about our ever changing climate, why not pop along to the Mole Valley Climate Hub? This is an exciting new initiative running in Leatherhead, find out more on page 57! We are delighted to bring you an action packed magazine this month. As well as a wide selection of businesses and services, there’s a whole bunch of events and open days to find out about on our What’s On pages. It’s so wonderful to finally be able to include these again. We also have information on: A fabulous Charity Dinner at Tyrells Wood Golf Club with footie legend Matt Le Tissier! An Open Garden in aid of local charity ‘Dyscover’. And it is also great to hear that Ashtead Choral Society will be back in action, performing live very soon. See details within! These are just a few events on offer so do explore our pages to discover more! We hope there will be something that takes your fancy! Finally, I urge you to read a little letter from Lance, on page 28. This riding group have a very big place in my heart, as my own brother also enjoyed many happy evenings riding, just like Lance, with the help of this lovely charity. Please donate if you possibly can. It really will make a huge difference to so many. Wishing all the local students a very happy and safe start/return to schools, colleges and Universities this term. Here’s hoping it will be a more settled year for you all. With Warmest Regards, Until next time,

The benefit of seeking early advice in divorce When people are faced with the prospect of separation and divorce, the best thing they can do is to seek early advice. Often, this will be the first time they have faced such a situation and many end up relying on the anecdotes of friends and family who have already been ‘stung’ going through the process. This can be risky advice to rely on, particularly as one size certainly does not fit all. England is renowned as being the divorce capital of the world. This is no doubt due to the huge discretion that our system employs to determine each case on its own facts and merits. There is no set formula to apply for parties divorcing in this country, which means the outcome can be quite uncertain. It also means that someone’s objectives can be unreasonable or even unachievable without the right advice. Knowing what can or cannot be done from the outset helps to set appropriate expectations. Seeking early legal advice is essential, not only to explain the process and options ahead, but also to give confidence in those early discussions that will need to take place in relation to family arrangements and financial implications. Many will be reluctant to instruct professionals for genuine concerns about costs, but it is much more costeffective to get early advice about what can and cannot be achieved, and the pros and cons of different arrangements, whether that be dealing

with property, pensions, savings or debts. People also need to be advised about the potential tax consequences (or savings) of particular actions, and without appropriate advice, you might find that you have missed opportunities which have financial repercussions. Despite what you might hear in the press, divorce proceedings do not need to be contentious and miserable. There are many ways to resolve arrangements for finances and children in an amicable fashion, with parties working together, not against each other. It is important that you receive legal advice about your rights and responsibilities, but then discussions as to the resolution of those issues can take place through mediation, discussions between you direct, collaborative law or round table meetings between you both and your respective lawyers. So, while the notion of divorce and separation is daunting, being forewarned is being forearmed and will give you the confidence to make the best decisions going forwards. If you are thinking about a potential separation, or your partner has told you they wish to separate, then at TWM we have specialist family solicitors across our offices in Surrey and London who can assist you with confidential advice. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Future Mole Valley - the Local Plan We’re not going to be learning any more detail about the specifics of Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) Local Plan until mid-September when it is published for public consultation but we are gleaning some pieces of general information about what will be included in it. We have learned that land has been allocated in the Plan for the provision of new, or extension of existing, community facilities and that the sites will be ring-fenced to ensure that they remained available for these facilities. MVDC has worked with infrastructure providers, such as health and education services, to ensure that the Plan meets their future requirements. However, the Council is limited in what it can do to encourage the development of the infrastructure as responsibility for this lies with the overseeing body. For example, a number of sites have been allocated for development as health hubs but the expansion of existing primary care practices or the provision of a new practice will need to be driven by GP surgeries through the Clinical Commissioning Group. In respect of education, MVDC has not been asked to allocate land for the provision of a new school within Mole Valley at either the primary or secondary stage but, although some of the community facilities sites in the Plan have been identified for the provision of specific infrastructure (such as health hubs), land could potentially be identified within the allocation to meet the requirement. Keep an eye on MVDC’s website as we move into September as we would hope to see the Local Plan published there in advance of the Council Meeting on 15th September when the Plan will be voted on prior to being issued for public consultation. Trees We are hoping that by the time you are reading this, 10 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - AUGUST 2021

we will have learned the outcome of the county-wide survey of public land that is available for planting trees that was due to be completed by July. Ashtead’s Tree Wardens, along with those from other towns and villages, have been invited to a meeting at Surrey County Council (SCC) on 4th August to discuss future plans and Matt Furness, SCC Cabinet Member for Highways, will also attend to ensure that Surrey Highways is on board from the start of the planting proposals. Remember, SCC aims to have planted 1.2 million trees by 2030 so they/we do need to get a move on. We will publish the outcome of the meeting and details of planting plans as soon as we know them. SCC’s Community Engagement Objective One of SCC’s priority objectives for 2021-26 is to increase its engagement with local communities under the banner of “Empowering Communities”. SCC wants to make use of existing local networks to engage with communities through digital and face-to-face initiatives to address simpler local issues that can perhaps be resolved through conversation and mutual agreement. More complex issues would still be taken to the Local Committee for each District and Borough and the option to bring a petition or question to the Local Committee would remain when an issue could not be resolved through the community engagement route. SCC is encouraging “Focused Conversations” to take place involving SCC Councillors, MVDC Councillors, Residents’ Associations and Parish Councils. Discussions on a local issue could also include online streaming to allow for wide public engagement. If there’s something that you think might lend itself to this initiative, please let us know at ashteadra@tiscali.co.uk.

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK

Welcome to our Tree Trail It’s easy to forget that trees, apart from adding interest to gardens and streets, also provide habitat and food for a myriad of species. The English oak supports more wildlife than any other native tree species in the UK. Even its fallen leaves support biodiversity: 326 species depend on oak for survival, 229 species rarely found on trees other than oak. As a Residents Association we are looking to protect and promote biodiversity in all its forms in the village. With a view to raising awareness of the trees on our streets, three of our members researched and designed the Fetcham Tree Trail. Initially 26 notable trees of different species were chosen to be included, and in time more will be added. We are photographing the trees throughout the year in order that it might help all of us to identify the main species of trees found locally at any time. Autumn will be soon upon us, and this is a great time to enjoy multiple leaf colours, the nuts and berries are an important food source for wildlife. The FRA website now features an interactive map with links to each tree, giving its botanical name, photos,

species, how to identify the tree, and local information. When out walking or taking children to school you can look up the particular trees on your route. Fetcham Tree Trail maps, with two suggested loops which take in all the trees, can be downloaded from the FRA website at www.fetchamresidents.co.uk/fetcham-tree-trail. Printed maps are available from outside The Kit Shop, Cobham Road, during shops hours. This year also saw the FRA’s launch of the Blue Hearts wild flower grass verge initiative. Surrey County Council supports the Blue campaign which encourages residents to leave suitable road verges unmown, to provide habitat and wildflowers for pollinators and the birds, bats and others that predate on them. www. fetchamresidents.co.uk/category/fetcham-blue-hearts/ There has been a terrible loss of biodiversity in the last fifty years. It is estimated that insects have declined by up to 50%, but with these two initiatives Fetcham residents are helping to support and increase wildlife and biodiversity across the village which can only be a good thing.

TECHNOLOGY & I.T.

Still they come… It has been widely reported that during the lockdown the scammers and fraudsters have become even more active, and they are constantly innovating new plausible ways of gaining your trust to gain access to your personal, bank or credit card details. For example we have heard of a wide variety of Vaccine related scams, where you might receive a text or email purporting to be from the UK Government, it asks you to click on a provided link then takes you to an authentic looking gov.uk website then asks for a variety of details, and your credit card details. Clicking on any link contained in an email can divert you to the scammers website where they request your personal information, which will become valuable to them over time. We do have PC and Mac software which will alert you (and block your access) if the website you are being diverted to is not legitimate. There has also been an increase in travel related scams- supposedly from someone you know who is stranded in a foreign land and needs money to get home. The following steps to avoid being scammed may be useful: While scammers’ delivery methods and messaging can quickly change, a few basic security measures can help protect you from the latest and most common scams: • Be sceptical when someone contacts you. Scammers can spoof calls and emails to make it look like they are coming from different sources, including government agencies, charities, banks and large companies. Don’t share personal information, usernames or passwords that others can use to steal your identity. • Research companies. Before you make a purchase or donation, take a few minutes to review the company. Do a web search for its name plus “scam” or “reviews” and research charities on https://www.charitynavigator. org/ and https://www.charitywatch.org/. • Be careful with your phone. If you suspect a spam call, don’t respond or press a button. The safest option is to hang up or ignore the call entirely. You can always look up the organization and initiate a call yourself if you’re worried there may actually be an issue. • Don’t refund or forward overpayments. Be careful whenever a company or person asks you to refund or forward part of a payment. Often, the original payment will be fraudulent and taken back later. • Look for suspicious payment requirements. Scammers often ask for payments via bank or wire transfer, cryptocurrency or gift cards. These payments can be harder to track and cancel than other forms of payment, which can leave you stuck without recourse. None of this is intended to scare you or make you nervous- just exercise caution, try not to rush when carrying out requested tasks. Where possible do not follow web links that are enclosed within an email, search and locate the destination websites yourself.

Local support and help when you need it We provide for the computing needs of thousands of local home and business users - just like you, we would love to discuss your needs and requirements. We specialise in talking English, but if you wish to talk “techie” we can do that too. Please feel free to get in contact.

My name is Lance, I am 9 years old, and I have Down’s syndrome. I want to tell you about my most favourite thing ever, horse riding! Mummy took me to our local Riding for the Disabled centre when I was three years old, after my physiotherapist mentioned to her that it would be good for my core strength. Everyone thought it would take me a while to get used to the ponies but we made friends as soon as I met them. I was smitten! Thursday was my favourite day of the week because me and my best friend Ella got to take a field trip from school and go riding. I am very sad at the moment, I haven’t been allowed to ride since the beginning of last year, and Mummy can’t tell me when I can go back. The pandemic meant the RDA had to close, because the volunteers need to help riders like me, get on and off the ponies, and walk alongside us in case we wobble a bit. Mummy says the RDA lost their home, this made me even sadder, and that is why I have written this letter. Horsley, Bookham and Leatherhead RDA need your help. They have raised funds to start building a new, fully accessible riding centre at Badgers Farm in Effingham, but they need a bit more money to add the roof, so Ella, myself and all the other riders can start to ride again. I really miss seeing the ponies, and getting to ride, if you are able to support the charity by making a donation to their ‘Raise the Roof’ campaign please visit:

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/raise-the-roof-for-hblrda lots of love

Lance (and Ella too!)

Horsley Bookham and Leatherhead riding for the disabled is a 100% volunteer led and funded local charity. Our new centre will allow us to more than double our rider numbers, allowing more children with disabilities, the opportunity to build muscle tone, co-ordination, balance as well as social skills, delivering a feeling of independence, a sense of achievement and greater self- confidence. RDA believes it’s what you can do that counts, please help us Raise the Roof to get Lance, Ella and other local children who have disabilities back in the saddle after what has been an incredibly tough year.

RJ CLINIC RESTORE • REJUVENATE • REPAIR

PAIN IN THE NECK! Come & see your local Osteopath’s at RJ Clinic in Fetcham Village Could wearing glasses be causing you neck and upper back issues? In recent months we have seen an increase in the number of patients who have come to our clinic suffering with neck, shoulder and upper back pain. A number of these patients wear glasses. Did you know that wearing glasses can affect the way in which you stand, hold and move your upper body, possibly leading to stiffness, restriction and muscle spasm in the neck and upper back?

TEST YOURSELF (if you wear glasses) · Sit with your head facing forwards and keep it still. · Look up to the ceiling, then to the floor and side to side. · Can you see the edges of your glasses? · Do you need to turn your head to see clearly past the edges of your glasses? If the answer is ‘yes’, then your glasses could be affecting the way you move, leading to functional problems which cause pain.

COMMON SYMPTOMS ARE: · Neck and shoulder stiffness and/or aching, especially after sitting for long periods of time e.g. driving, sitting at the computer or reading a newspaper.

· A sharp stabbing pain in the middle of the shoulder blades. · Arm pain such as aching, pins and needles, weakness – this indicates a nerve irritation which may be due to mal-positioning of the spinal bones. · Headaches -These can be at the base of the neck, radiating to the forehead, or temporal area or behind the eyeball itself, sometimes described as a ‘pulling/sharp stabbing behind the eye.

“Our passion is to get fast results, help you understand what is wrong and how to help yourself” We love helping people out of pain, if you have any questions and would like to know more, please just give us a call 01372 363 721 or email us on info@rjclinic.co.uk Check out our website www.rjclinic.co.uk

Do you care for someone who is becoming forgetful or know a carer who needs time off? DROP-IN DAY - 25TH SEPTEMBER, 10AM TO 3PM:

Come & join us for tea and cake in the conservatory adjacent to the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead & find out how we can help. The Conservatory Club is a relaxed and friendly social club which aims to help people with memory difficulties or in the early stages of living with dementia to retain their communication and social skills. While a member is at the Club, carers have a period of respite from the demanding responsibilities of caring and this helps many to continue caring for their loved one at home for longer than might otherwise have been possible. Members pay £23 per day, and this includes the cost of lunch and incidentals. We understand that this may prove difficult for some people and our Club Treasurer is available to discuss and advise on alternative arrangements.

WHAT’S ON

The Probus Club of Ashtead Ashtead Probus enjoyed a much anticipated and welcome return to Tyrrells Wood Golf Club last month for the first joint lunch with our friends at Leatherhead Probus. Appropriate precautions were in place notwithstanding the easing of lockdown restrictions, and it was a great success. The talk at this month’s lunch is on Monday September 20th, also at Tyrrells Wood, and again takes place jointly with Leatherhead Probus. This time we’ll hear about a somewhat different US experience enjoyed by our speaker Tim Albert – Two Summers - around the USA by Greyhound Bus: 1969 and 2019. Retired professional and business men looking for a diversion from their routine should contact Stephen Bridges on 07806 791774 (stephen@bridgesuk. com). Alternatively, visit the Ashtead club website, www.ashteadprobus.com.

Mole Valley Probus Club Mole Valley Probus is a club for retired professional and business men and women. This active Club, based in Leatherhead, is one of the largest Probus clubs in Surrey and well prepared for the time when it can continue normal club activities. Already in hand are a September river trip to Windsor, a visit a London Christmas Concert and a return from August to the club monthly lunch meetings with speaker present. Also decided is the next Club charity donation. This will be to Horsley, Bookham & Leatherhead Riding for the Disabled to assist in the valuable work they do. Despite Covid, club monthly meetings prior to August continued via Zoom, so sadly without lunch, but still with a speaker. The July meeting was also the club’s AGM when club Chairman, Michael Brown, handed over responsibility to the new Chairman, John Kennedy of Ashtead, with Elizabeth Kennedy of Cobham elected Vice Chairman. Members of the club Mole Valley Probus Club retiring Executive Committee remaining in office: John Butler, Secretary; David Chairman, Michael Brown, right, passes his Club Chairman Jackson, Treasurer; Terry Hulme, Assistant Events Officer and Speakers responsibility to incoming Chairman John Kennedy of Ashtead. Secretary; and Steve Little, Assistant Secretary and Club Website Manager. Iain Crawford, Events Officer, retired from the committee with the post filled by Past Chairman Chris Thomas. Welfare duties fell to Past Chairman Michael Brown. Activities can be seen in report, photo and film on the club website molevalleyprobus.chessck.co.uk and for joining see ‘Contact Us’, top right corner of the site home page.

8 Sep 2021 Selfies, Self-Expression, Celebrity & the Victorian Carte de Visite, by Mark Hill

Well known from appearances on The Antiques Roadshow, Mark Hill will talk about a new craze which gripped the world in the mid-1870s. Small photographic portraits mounted on card were shot professionally in studios & handed out like business or greetings cards. Across nearly two decades, over 400 million cards were estimated to have been printed & shared with friends, family & fans.

13 Oct 2021 Mars and The Muses: The Renaissance Art of Armour, by Tobias Capwell

This lecture serves as an introduction to the idea of armour as an expressive art-form. The achievements of virtuoso armourers embodied splendour and richness while also carrying more complex messages about status, aristocratic associations, the social order and divine power.

10 Nov 2021 British Studio Pottery: A Concise History, by Helen Ritchie

An overview of the British Studio Pottery movement, exploring handmade pottery in Britain from the last decades of the nineteenth century to the present day. The talk includes the work of the Martin Brothers, Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie, Alison Britton and Grayson Perry.

8 Dec 2021 Children’s Book Illustrations, by John Ericson

Some our most deeply etched childhood memories come from book illustrations. Images of ‘Tigger’ & ‘Toad’ or even ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ will probably remain with us for ever. John will examine how illustrations contribute to the development of understanding & how images & narrative together create such powerful memories.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead

COP26 is coming What is COP26 and why is it important? This forthcoming climate summit in Glasgow will begin on 1st November, hosted jointly by the UK and Italy. It will be attended by representatives from over 190 countries who signed the UN Climate Framework Convention in the 1990s. It is hoped that firm agreements will be made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as established by the legally-binding, landmark Paris agreement in 2015. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2°C, preferably to 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels. Whilst many countries are working hard to reduce their dependence on carbon, the UN states that with the current trend of emissions, the average global temperature is expected to increase by 3-5°C by the end of the century. We have already seen that this warming trend is linked to extreme weather events and would lead to parts of the world becoming uninhabitable. What decisions are needed from COP26? Therefore, all countries are being asked to produce ambitious plans to reach net carbon zero by mid-century. These include: accelerating the phase-out of coal, curtailing deforestation, speeding up the switch to electric vehicles and encouraging further investment in renewables. In addition, measures are required to protect ecosystems in order to support life processes and to increase resilience in agriculture, infrastructure and livelihoods. Important aspects of this collaboration are that it occurs throughout society, including through financial institutions in order to unleash public and private finance. As richer countries are responsible for two-thirds of the global emissions, it is essential that the least developed countries (LDCs) are clearly heard and that they are helped to adapt to the ravages of extreme weather and sea level rise. The pledge that $100bn a year would go to LDCs by 2020 was originally made in 2009 but so far, funding has been well below that level. Carbon sequestration from the atmosphere will also be needed to meet net zero by 2050. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is investing £30 million in five projects to do just this, one of which is the addition of biochar to soil, which stores carbon stably for hundreds of years and improves soil nutrition and water-retention. How will these decisions affect us? As caretakers of the planet, we will be asked to consider how we use its resources sustainably, from decisions over what we purchase, to how we travel, garden and heat our homes. This year the UK government has invested in electric car manufacture and battery storage projects, as well as providing finance for better public transport, to reduce congestion, pollution and improve accessibility. However, improvements are still needed in terms of many aspects of life, such as decarbonising construction materials and heating sources. Plans need to be turned into action that will secure a greener, healthier and happier future for us all. Each of us can get involved by raising awareness, supporting campaigns and writing to our MP. For ideas and resources on COP26, visit https://together-for-our-planet.ukcop26.org/onestepgreener/

He is very affectionate and likes to be stroked, although like many cats he’s not keen on being picked up. He is learning to be brushed and likes to sit next to his fosterer whilst she is knitting. He loves his food and does enjoy being outside so a garden is important.

If you could give Oscar his forever home, please get in touch on 0345 260 1387 or adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk

He needs to be the only cat in a home without very young children. Oscar has had a clean bill of health from the vets and is ready to find his new forever home could this be you? Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk

In line with Cats Protection guidelines, we are only homing cats in the local areas of: KT5,6,9, KT17-23, SM7 and RH3-5 BUT may be flexible for the right home

Mike Bessent

Crime Reduction Advisor & Designing Out Crime Officer NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

This month, I was trying to think of what to write about in terms of crime prevention and then decided to share with you some news about a colleague who many residents of Mole Valley will remember very well. My colleague, Mike Bessent, sadly died on the 11th June from a brain tumour which was only diagnosed last December. Mike underwent extensive treatments to try to halt the progress of the cancer but, tragically, this was not successful and he died peacefully at home with his wife and family by his side. My reason for mentioning Mike is that, for many years, he was the Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley and was my predecessor in the role that I currently hold. I had known Mike for several years before moving into the field of crime prevention myself and, in many ways, he was my mentor, support, guide and valued friend. Mike was a long-serving police officer who recognised the vital importance of crime prevention as part of an officer’s role. He trained in his specialist field and developed his knowledge and experience through the years to offer his expert advice to so many people. Like me, he visited victims of burglary, advised residents about home and property security, carried out security reviews of locations and business premises and advised on planning applications in terms of trying to “design out” the opportunity for crime. Mike had a natural ability to come up with practical and imaginative solutions to problems and was an enthusiastic champion of neighbourhood policing

and problem solving involving the actual community in the decision making process. In recent years, Mike had moved over to Elmbridge to carry out this role over there but we were in very regular contact with each other, often several times a week, and his advice was always so helpful. I just felt that there are some people in the community you would want to know this news. Mike will be very sorely missed by all his colleagues but also by the wider community he served loyally for so many years. Here are a just a few of the crime reduction tips that Mike taught me: 1. Use timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern to give the impression that your home is occupied and people are moving about. 2. Remove obvious climbing aids, such as wheelie bins, which could help a burglar to climb to the back of your house - the most popular point of entry for a burglar. 3. Never leave window and door keys in locks, as they are very attractive as a method of entry to a would-be burglar. 4. Consider using some dusk-till-dawn lighting outside your home to remove areas of shadow and to enhance the impression of occupancy. 5. If you have an intruder alarm, please use it and, if not, consider getting one as they are known to be a very strong deterrent against burglary. All common sense and very practical ideas that I have used when giving advice over the years. Thanks, Mike!!
