Welcome to November
I hope you are all well and keeping cosy as we head into the colder winter months! I have enjoyed some lovely autumn walks this year, with my trusty hound of course! The blackberries seemed to arrive particularly early this year and I was delighted to gather several containers full, which are now safely packed into my freezer for winter treats! I also collected a large bag full of sloe berries which were in abundance this year. These are also in my freezer and I must make some time to sort them out. Apparently Sloe Gin is easy to make and very delicious, maybe I could just about get some ready for Christmas or perhaps I have missed the boat on that front ! Either way, it will be fun to give this a go! As well as berries, the acorns and conkers seem to be plentiful too, and the squirrels are happy it seems. They have been busily collecting and burying/storing them away in secret hideaways for winter feasts. I do love the autumn months. The colours and the light if caught on the right day, can be spectacular and with all the beautiful countryside around Surrey we are very lucky to be able to witness magnificent colours as the leaves change, often from our windows in many cases. November is of course a time to remember; 11th November marks the day that WW1 ended — at 11am, on 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. So let's all pause for two minutes at that point, to remember the fallen. Over recent years November has also become the month when many grow a moustache to mark 'Movember’ and raise funds and raise awareness for men’s health. I’ll be keeping an eye out for some new ‘tashes over the coming months! Keep well and please do remember: ‘Hands/Face/Space’ Wash your hands regularly, especially when you return home. Cover your face with a mask when going into public spaces and keep a good distance from others. We need to keep on with these new rituals, especially in the winter months. I look forward to being back with you for our December/Christmas issues. With Warm Regards,
Ros x

Bookham Wine Club
Garden Meetings Keep the Corks Popping… The Wine Club’s programme may have been severely disrupted but a series of “Garden Meetings” ensured members were able to continue meeting socially over the summer months and adhere to social distancing measures. A number of volunteers invited up to five other members to enjoy three carefully selected wines in their gardens. Our first meeting in July featured a lovely fizz from Southern Piedmont, a white wine from the Macon area in France (Saint Veran Maison Auvigue 2016) and a 2015 Beaujolais, all provided by Ashtead’s ExCellar. A similar plan was made for August with wines from The Guildford Wine Company. A dry, fresh white, Lyrarakis Asyrrtiko from Greece (the favourite wine in some gardens), Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rose from the R Rhine Valley and Kayra Kalecik Karasi, a lively red wine from Turkey.
In September, we enjoyed three wines from Laithwaite’s Wine. First, a delightful Cremant, Roche Lacour Brut, followed by a Chablis, and, finally, a full bodied Chianti Riserva. The Cremant and the Chianti proved to be the most popular. It is hoped members will continue to meet through the autumn and winter in whatever capacity is allowable, and share some excellent wines safely. Full details on BWC can be found at www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk …and if you would like to receive updates on our future plans, please email membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk

The Wildlife Trusts launch £3 £ 0 million appeal to kickstart nature’s recovery across 30% of land and sea by 2030 Restoring Surrey’s lost chalk grasslands on the North Downs Sarah Jane Chimbwandira, chief executive of Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: “We all need nature more than ever. We all need to rewild our lives to support a green recovery. By supporting our 30 by 30 target we’ll have wilder landscapes that store carbon and provide on-your-doorstep nature for people too. Our vision for Surrey is an abundance of wildlife in people’s gardens, alongside footpaths, road verges and through towns with rivers and hedgerows providing living corridors to enable wildlife to thrive.” The Surrey 30 by 30 project: Restoring Surrey’s lost chalk grassland on the North Downs Funds raised by The Wildlife Trusts’ new 30 by 30 appeal will go towards nature recovery projects that will put new land aside for nature as well as repair and link-up existing, fragmented, wild areas. The iconic Surrey landscape, which people have visited for day trips from London and further afield for centuries is suffering. Surrey has some of the fastest declining wildlife populations in England, with one third of its species now either extinct or in danger. This includes local extinctions of some bee species, such as the shrill carder bee. The most well-known places on the North Downs are rooted in the hearts and souls of local people as ‘go to’ places to visit at weekends for peace and relaxation. Many families have benefitted from this landscape for generations. But now we need to give back to this landscape for future generations. Improving the condition of this chalk ridge in popular visitor destinations as well as lesser known places such as Hackhu hurst Downs, Norbury Park and Sheepleas. England has lost more than 80 per cent of its chalk grassland which is devastating to pollinators and insects. Now more than ever we must take action, because we are facing a pollinator and insect crisis, with 41 per cent of insects facing extinction. The vision is to expand flowerrich chalk grassland and wildflower meadows along the North Downs, so they become alive with the humming of
bees alongside beautiful bugs and butterflies dancing from flower to flower. Support The Wildlife Trust’s 30 by 30 public appeal and Surrey Wildlife Trust will: • Work in partnership with farmers, landowners and vineyards on the North Downs to identify f poor quality chalkl k and and target areas for chalk grassland restoration • Get Surrey buzzing with local groups, volunteers and schools who want to restore colourful ribbons of community greenspaces with wildflower superhighways for pollinators • Encourage local authorities to relax their management of road verges and parks, letting grass grow longer and allowing wildflower areas to develop, to save costs by reducing grass-cutting and benefitting wildlife • Engage new environmental advocates in counting the abundance and diversity of pollinator species like solitary bees and hoverflies in the county. • Enable volunteers to get their gloves on to remove unwanted vegetation which smothers and prevents the wildflowers and plants we want to flourish • Restore and repair hedgerows, which support pollinators and some of our most-loved species such as hedgehogs and dormouse. Surrey Wildlife Trusts’ 30 by 30 appeal asks people, individuals, corporates and communities to donate at ww www ww.surreyw w ywildlifetrust.org w The website is packed full fuu of helpfu ful u guides and information about how you can support our work and create wildlife friendly areas where you live.

KEEPING UP TO DATE
It’s easy to be cynical and suggest that manufacturers are creating their own consumable market for their product by creating a “life cycle” for their goods. Microsoft, for example, publish their product life cycle to help customers plan better. This can be found on www.docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle/products If you are an Office 2010 user you may be surprised to hear it is coming out of support on 13 Nov 2020. This means no updates, no support and its security will not be current or relevant. Again, you may say this is just manufacture “up-sale talk”. Do you recall very recently there was a huge discrepancy in the incorrect reporting of the daily Covid-19 Virus cases by nearly 16,000 cases? The sole reason for this inaccuracy was because Public Health England used an out dated version of Excel files to collate the figures. The version type they used only had a certain file capacity range of around 65,000 rows. Had they been using the newer file type, this figure is more than a million rows, the daily figures would have been more accurate? It was because of this discrepancy that the figures were misreported by a dramatic amount. We are not saying you have to be filling every corner of your spreadsheets to see these problems, but this was a very real situation.
Microsoft have just announced that if you are using their Office 365 product on a Mac you have to be using the macOS v 10.14 or above, to receive the updates from November onwards To ensure your Windows 10 version is up to-date go to start > settings > update and security > windows updates > then check for updates. In certain situations you may have to install earlier updates before adding the latest version. This process sometimes taking several hours to complete, so be patient! Since March we have seen a huge increase in the requirement to improve the wifi broadband coverage across your home to ensure there is sufficient coverage for all users. A range of products which are based on the mobile phone broadcasting technology called MESH, have provided an easy to install, cost effective solution, which is full expandable to cover the largest of properties. The devices are intended for user installation, so no special tools and tricks are required. As we provide full solutions, we have also “wifi’d” customers gardens, out-houses and pool rooms. Should you have a need of this nature, please do enquire for further details We support thousands of customers – why don’t we support you?

Bookham Buzzing with Blue Hearts The verges of the A246 have been buzzing with insects this summer and autumn following a reduced verge mowing schedule agreed with Surrey County Council (SCC). Some beautifully painted Blue Hearts are now in place showing the areas which are left to flower and support wildlife. SCC were very receptive to our request for blue heart areas — indeed Bookham is the first area in Surrey to display Blue Hearts. Local residents Nick Haynes and Angela Jones have beautifully decorated the hearts. Nick made the first hearts and painted them himself after establishing his own wild flower verge outside his house. The hearts were placed on the unmown verges of the A246 and have received a great response. Indeed BBC recently featured a photograph of one of his hearts in its online article about the Blue campaign in Leicestershire. See: www.tinyurl.com/y56pksg4
If you would like to include a bee friendly area near you, look at the Blue Campaign on https://bluecampaignhub. com or contact us for help in getting council reduced mowing put into place. The residents in Barn Meadow Lane and Woodlands Road have already set a wonderful example by allowing nature to restore their verges. Verges should allow for good visibility for both traffic and pedestrians, therefore woody growth and shrubs should be removed. Giving nature a helping hand by adding responsibly sourced native wild flower seed will help your verge and our pollinators to flourish — and in return they will continue to pollinate so much of the food we eat. If you would like to get involved, contact Diane, Steve or Frances by email, Facebook or telephone.
The Grange in Rectory Lane has enthusiastically embraced the Blue campaign by trialling a stretch of their front verge which is now adorned by 3 of Angela’s hearts — plus an increasing number of flowers and insects. A Grange volunteer made a dozen plain blue hearts which were then beautifully decorated by Angela to include The Grange logo as well as the pollinator and flower images. The team behind the Bookham Blue Hearts now have a Facebook page @bookhambluehearts which you can like/ follow and can also be contacted at bookhambluehearts@ gmail.com or by leaving a message on 0300 030 9890.

HOME WANTED! Damson & Forest
15 week old Damson (female tortoiseshell) and Forest (male) are looking for a very special home together. They came in as stray kittens from a colony of cats and were around 10 weeks old when they came into care. The progress they have made, particularly Damson, is very impressive and she is growing into a confident and cuddly cat. Forest remains wary and whilst he will happily interact with humans he knows, he is cautious of new situations and people. As a pair they balance each other well and with the right home and some love and patience we are really hopeful Forest will learn to be more trusting. However, we are looking for an understanding home who would be happy to accept him for who he is. They are well on the way to a full physical recovery and now need to take the next step of their journey into their forever home. A full medical history will be provided to any suitable potential adopter. If you feel you can give Damson & Forest their ideal, well deserved forever home please email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk
If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection
As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

Book Reviews NOVEMBER 2020
Summerwater by Sarah Moss (Hardback £14.99) Sarah Moss is a masterful writer who infuses her characters’ thoughts with dark humour and insights into the challenges of modern life. In run-down cabins around a Scottish loch, several families are holidaying, or trying to, in perpetual rain. One group has kept the others awake with loud music and partying, and the sense of mounting tribalism and danger is skilfully drawn. I love Moss’s ability to capture the viewpoints of people of different ages, allowing the reader to weave their way through their ideas and voices until they finally come together in a common cause. In between are beautifully captured glimpses of local wildlife responding to the humans in their midst. A brilliant read.
Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton (paperback £8.99) This is a yarn about a Brisbane boy growing up amidst poverty, violence and crime yet it is still infused with joy and humour. Dalton is a celebrated magazine journalist in Australia, known for his lyrical prose, so it comes as a shock to learn of the brutal circumstances of his upbringing but he has managed to write a wonderful coming of age novel where Eli, the narrator of the story, is just trying to follow his heart and be a good man, but life just keeps throwing obstacles in his way: a lost father, a mum in jail and heroin dealer for a stepfather. But Eli’s life is about to get a whole lot more serious when he falls in love. There is plenty of grim violence in this book but it is also a story of brotherhood, true love and the most unlikely of friendships.
The Last Giants: The Rise and Fall of the African Elephant by Levison Wood (hardback £20) Levison Wood spent a month following the annual migration routes of Botswana’s elephants to the Okavango Delta. This book explores elephants from their very beginning and looks towards possible futures. The reader is taken on a fascinating tour of elephant evolution, biology, and their essential role in supporting ecosystems. I was astonished to read about how their family groups, behaviours and bodies are changing as a result of increasing human activity in lands that elephants have walked for millions of years. Wood takes a clear-eyed look at hunting, poaching, conservation, and possible solutions which are urgently needed to keep both elephants and humans flourishing together.

Leatherhead And District Lions As with many Charities, in keeping with “Stay Home Stay Safe”, Leatherhead and District Lions have had to cancel practically all activities, including meetings, Easter Egg g Raffle, attending village fetes - Ashtead Village Day, Donkey Derby at Polesden Lacey, impacting majorly on our Fund Raising for this year. We have however been able to support and fund a sizeable number of worthy causes from our funds raised prior to lockdown and in keeping with our objective for the Lion Year ending June “supporting youth in the community t ” we donated £1000 each to the Scouts and Girl Guides, £2500 toward Ashtead Youth Club replacement minibus, which was stolen and £929 to “Life skills” for schools. Other major donations were made to: • Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance £3,130 • Dorian Huracan Appeal £1,000 • Polesden Lacey NT £2763 • Mid Surrey Dementia Care £1,000 • Sight for Surrey, Leatherhead £2,500 • SeeAbility, Leatherhead £1,500 • Mary Francis Trust £1,000 • Dorking Mens Shed £1,145 • Asthma Relief (6 Nebulisers – 3 to Leatherhead Hospital, 3 to Epsom Hospital) £1520 In all we are proud to have donated in excess of £26,000 including, The Brigitte Trust, The Meeting Room Christmas Lunch and other individuals in need of a little help, as well as a “Tesco shop” for a local Leatherhead family.
GATHERING WINTER FUEL! Our Wenceslas appeal has been running since 2013 and has provided many thousands of pounds to individuals and families suffering Fuel Poverty t , meaning they cannot pay their gas or electricity bills and in some cases preventing them from receiving other support or benefits. These donations come from people who are in a position not to need the Government Fuel Al A lowance each year. The funds received are held in a “ring fenced” account and used to pay these fuel bills for those in need. If you would like to donate to Wenceslas or our General Charity t account for wider use in the community, please visit our website ww www. leatherheadlions.org.uk Fund Raising - Donate. You can send us a cheque or Virgin Money Giving, and don’t forget you can also gift aid your donation. In these difficult times our freedom to raise funds is limited so any donations are gratefully received and with Lions International every penny we receive goes back to the Community. Even our Santa Street Collections will be limited this year to static collection points in order to maintain safe distancing. The first time we have not visited children in their street in 46 years! Dates and locations will be published late November and available on our website – so watch this space!! TOYOTA
YARIS Reviewed by Ted Macauley
I have found a new and fresh way to spell EXCELLENCE. It is Y-A-R-I-S. And that is Toyota’s latest and fab super mini - a fine example of efficiency and super-duper value for your hard-earned lolly. Petite and shapely, with attractive curves, the latest edition Yaris, a very fine product of Toyota’s inventive brain-boxes has been re-designed from the floor up. It is rewardingly economic to run, good to look at and a real treat all round to own; a leader in the over-crowded jam of super-minis that transport you and yours with ease and comfort either in and around town or on your ventures up to Lake Windermere and beyond, after a motorway trek. The sleekly styled hatchback, a smooth ride on its 17" alloys, encourages it occupants to sit back in reasonable comfort while they absorb the resonance and melodic offerings from its premium sound system with its eight...yes EIGHT...speakers. If you think nobody buys weeny cars any more you are mistaken. Not if Toyota are anything to go by. Last year alone they put the wind up their opponents and sold 224,000 of their third generation Yaris in Europe and rewardingly and deservedly claimed a 7.6 per cent share of the B-segment. The latest hot shot has been utterly redesigned from its wheels up. It’s handsome looks of a folded
rear end with optional two-tone paint, make it an instantly recognisable Toyota and when you are comfortably seated behind the steering wheel you will be able to gaze at those attractive rear arches in your mirrors. You sit 60mm further back than in the old model and your hip point is over 20mm lower as well. The newly designed model starts at £19,910. Even that basic beginner is well and satisfyingly and sensibly equipped with a smaller, neater seven-inch touchscreen, reversing cameras and all manner of useful add-ons, an easy hands reach away. If I do have a moan - fussy me!!! - it is the cheap plastics, and a lack of headroom for those seated behind the driver. Here in the UK, while its trim levels and option packs are aplenty, we will only see one power train; a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder connected to a small battery and an electric motor. Total output to the front wheels is 114bhp. That may not sound too vigorously rewarding - but, remember, the Yaris weighs a little over one tonne and manages a respectable 0-62 mph in 9.7 seconds. And it will further reward you with a return of 60mpg in town and almost 70mpg away from the hustle and bustle. How about that? There is not a lot more praise I can offer on this wee treat.Test one and see if I am right....
Happy Motoring!

Securing your property NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
This time of year tends to see an increase in reports of burglaries of domestic dwellings and thefts from garages, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. In my work, I am asked to visit people who have been victims of a burglary. It is sad to report that in many cases homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in — they have gained easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all, cases we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level and this is often because access to the rear is not restricted by locked gates or fencing. Any gates should ideally have bolts fitted at waist height to prevent someone reaching over and opening the gate easily. Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to burglars. Burglars prefer to “work” unobserved, so having a clear line of sight from the roadside to a property makes it less attractive than a home where there are high fences or hedges, where a would-be burglar will not be readily seen. Having some effective, low-level, exterior lighting can also provide a deterrent effect, as it removes areas of shadow which are so popular with burglars. Dusk-till-dawn exterior lighting can be very attractive and cost-effective, as it generally uses low wattage bulbs and it also removes the need for people to switch exterior lights on and off.
If your home is going to be unoccupied at any time after dusk, the use of some simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern can convey the impression that there is someone at home. This has been shown to be an effective deterrent, as burglars never want to meet their victims and only rarely target a property where it appears that anyone is there. Also, I would emphasise (as I have done in the past) that any residents of Mole Valley can request a free home and property security survey. All you have to do to contact me is call 101 and ask to be put through to me on extension 30809. You can also email molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk and I will get your message to call you back to arrange an appointment. I will always focus on practical advice that is sensible and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not promote any specific products or companies and can often suggest relatively simple ways that people can use to make their homes less attractive to a would-be burglar. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!
We are delighted to be open to the public again albeit with reduced opening hours and have enjoyed welcoming Bookham residents back into the library for browsing and safe usage of our computers. These hours will be extended in due course so please do check the Surrey Libraries website: www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries.
We are offering an extensive online bookshelf through this website where library members can download the appropriate apps to borrow eBooks, eMagazines, eAudio books and also free digitalised versions of daily newspapers. This digital borrowing resource has been expanded due to COVID restrictions and it is worth checking out it out, especially if we are subject to further localised lockdowns and our regular customers are unable to get to the library to choose more books. Additionally, there are many online events for children including our very popular weekly Pebble Rhyme time, Storytime, STEM projects and craft ideas as

well as a Lego club and Origami club. To view all events find us on Facebook@surreylibrariesUK and subscribe to the Surrey Libraries YouTube channel. For Christmas this year, we have many seasonal fiction books as well as craft books providing a wealth of ideas for homemade presents, and cookery books for creating festive treats. We will also be welcoming the return of ‘Requests for Rudolph’ for both children and adults. Fill in a short form, and Rudolph will choose a surprise library book just for you, which you will be able pick up from the library a few days afterwards.
