BE IN THE KITCHEN CROSSWORD PUZZLE WHAT’S ON See what’s on in and around Bookham in April
I do hope you are all well and that you enjoyed a lovely Easter break. I spent some of the long weekend sorting out my garden, and although I certainly don’t claim to have green fingers, it was good to tidy up a little after the dull months of winter. The grass is growing and the trees are budding. I’m looking forward to the green outlook after the bare tree view of the past few months. I must say, I’m even tempted to grow some veggies this year, nothing too ambitious, but the memory of the aroma and the taste of freshly picked tomatoes is tempting me to get my hands dirty! As always, we are delighted to share a selection of local bits and bobs this month; a funny little poem from Marion Kemp, which I’m sure will make some of you smile, plus news from Eastwick School about their mission to save their well-loved swimming pool. I was particularly interested to hear their plans because my own father was one of the volunteer parents who helped with the digging and making of this wonderful facility, way back in the 1950s! (a little before my time, I hasten to add, but my brother attended the school at the time). I know the pool has been well-used and well-loved by so many local families over the years. It would be wonderful to see it looking glorious again. The Grange, Surrey’s leading charity, based here in Bookham, provides services to 100+ people with learning disabilities. They are seeking a final £145,000 to complete a major refurbishment project of the beautiful Victorian building. This will mean 25 more people with disabilities, especially those with more restricted mobility, will be able to access valuable skills training and work experience. Look Local has supported The Grange for many years and we can’t wait to see this project come to fruition. Read all about their plans right here… I wish you all a great month, Warmest regards,

DO YOU KNOW EASTWICK SCHOOL IN BOOKHAM HAS AN OUTDOOR HEATED POOL? The pool was funded and built by a group of dedicated parents in the 1950s, soon after Eastwick School was built. Since then, it has continued to be managed and funded by the parents of Eastwick School, providing pupils with swimming lessons on site as part of their curriculum. Additionally, over the years, hundreds of Eastwick families have enjoyed the Family Swim Club, with the pool opening for sessions after school and Saturdays during the summer term and summer holidays. However, the pool plant and infrastructure now require urgent investment. This January, with the support of the school, a group of parents formed the Eastwick Save Our Swimming Pool (SOS) campaign. Having gauged from a survey that the Eastwick parents overwhelmingly supported saving the pool, the campaign to raise the £20,000 required to complete the essential work got underway. Parents have been donating generously to the campaign and showing their support by volunteering for the Tidy Up weekend sessions throughout March. Various fundraising events involving the pupils have also been organised. We are now hoping the local community can help us. If your children have benefitted from the pool in previous
10 Looklocal Magazine - March 2016
years - perhaps you’ve spent sunny afternoons at a Family Swim Club session or you’re passionate about ensuring this incredible facility is kept open for the next generation (and hopefully the wider local community) - then please pledge your support. How can you help? • Donate using the MyDonate page https://mydonate. bt.com/events/sosfunds/291686. (please click the gift aid option) • Donate cash or cheques. Please post to Eastwick School and label the envelope for the Eastwick SOS campaign. Cheques payable to “Friends of Eastwick Junior School”. We are also keen to learn more about the pool history. If you were a parent involved in the building of the pool or have been involved in the running of the pool in previous years, we’d love to hear from you. Please do get in touch by email: eastwicksos@gmail.com Further details and news about the fundraising campaign can be found on: www.facebook.com/friendsofeastwickschoolssos Or come along to the Eastwick School Summer Fair on 14th May 12-4pm where we are planning to have a stall with further information and updates about the Eastwick SOS campaign.

GARDENING M AT T E R S
Gosh, April already, where has the time gone? Maybe it’s my age, but it really does seem to zoom by in a way it never did when I was little. Depressing thought...anyway, let’s have a butcher’s at the Latin words used to describe the leaf shape of plants... When naming a plant, one of the most obvious aspects to choose is the shape of its leaves, and the name will usually incorporate the suffix folius/folia/folium, or sometimes phyllus, to show that it’s the leaf that the name refers to and not the flower, for example. So, grandifolius refers to large leaves, as does macrophyllus, and examples of these are Euonymus grandifolius and Aster macrophyllus. The number of leaves the plant has can also be indicated: for example, anything with diphyllus in the name will be two-leaved, such as Penstemon diphyllus, and plants with pentaphyllus will be five-leaved, as in Hibiscus pentaphyllus. And anything with millefolium will have many leaves, eg Achillea millefolium, a couple of its other names being ‘hundred-leaved grass’ and ‘thousand-leaf ’. Many specific names refer simply to a shape: eg palmatum will tell you that the leaves of the plant are palmate, or like fingers radiating from the palm of a hand. A very well-known example of this is Acer palmatum, the Japanese maple. Or maybe one of the first details noticed is the outline shape of the leaves. Some are very distinctive, such as those with round leaves, rotundifolia, as in Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’, a cherry laurel used for hedging. The name shows that its leaves will produce a dense hedge, which will maintain privacy. Or latifolia, meaning broad-leaved, as in Campanula
latifolia, a clump-forming perennial with oval leaves. Others are linear in shape, and will include the word linearis, such as Callistemon linearis, the narrow-leaved bottlebrush, or Yucca linearis. Rather than its overall shape, it may be the margins of the leaf which are its most distinctive feature. Dentatus indicates that the plant has a toothed margin – eg Ceanothus dentatus and Lavandula dentata - or it may indicate that the leaf has the appearance of a tooth, as in Hedera colchica Dentata, a fast-growing ivy with leathery leaves in the shape of a canine tooth. Plants whose leaves have wavy margins might carry the specific name sinuatus, as in Alnus sinuatus, an alder native to Alaska. The tips and base of the leaves may also be distinguishing features. Plants with emarginatus in their names will have leaves with a notch at the top, as in Cotoneaster emarginatus and Prunus emarginatus. If the base is heartshaped, you will see the word cordata, as in Houttuynia cordata, or Tilia cordata, the linden or lime tree. There’s also pinnata, where the plant has pinnate leaves, ie the leaflets are arranged in pairs up the stem, examples being Dahlia pinnata, Lavandula pinnata and Santolina pinnata, the cotton lavender. And now I’ve run out of space, so I will leave you till next time...and overall plant shape, huzzaaaahhh.

n 7 February 1964, an advertisement appeared in The Times: “Young people over 18. See Europe in a double-decker bus. 25 July - 16 Aug. 6 countries. £28. Probably less. Phone POP 1841.” 22-year-old Tim Lewis came up with the idea and bought an old London Transport bus for £400. Actually, it was Cliff Richard in his film Summer Holiday who came up with the idea! On Saturday, 25 July, it left Twickenham with 23 girls and 17 boys on board - students from across Britain on a 2,000 mile, 3 week camping holiday across Europe. As dream holidays go, one that involves camping with a bunch of strangers and spending 3 weeks seeing Europe from inside an old bus that is hot, slow and as noisy as a steam kettle may not be everyone’s idea of the trip of a lifetime. But wind the clock back to ‘swinging’ 1964, and make that vehicle a gleaming red double-decker bus, still resplendent in London Transport livery, and everything changes. It was a trip that somehow captured the spirit of the age. The bus also attracted much press attention and

public curiosity. We’d stop at a garage to fill up with diesel, and a French TV film-crew would appear. In Paris, local press photographers insisted that we drive round and round the Arc de Triomphe in heavy traffic to get the perfect shot for their newspapers. In 1965, we formed the Double-Decker Club (DDC) and more holidays followed throughout the 60s. “Aside from the inevitable punctures, our biggest problem was low bridges. We’d even go down a country lane to avoid one. In mid-France, we were going through a vineyard when suddenly a group of French labourers working in the fields stopped working and started waving at us as if we’d come to liberate them. It was really quite emotional.” “Yes, it was all a bit hippyish and these were, of course, the groovy days of long hair, mini-skirts, psychedelic rock and free love. But the holidays themselves weren’t in any sense salacious, they were just immense fun, and many of the friendships that were made have lasted half a lifetime”. We have now organised a nostalgic DDC reunion in Twickenham on 16 April. For more details, email: ddc.alan@yahoo.co.uk

COMMUNITY HUB & COFFEE SHOP ‘ A PLACE FOR ALL, TIME FOR ALL’
ASK BRUCE: MY FIRST DOG In this month’s Ask Bruce column, we cover some suitable breeds for first-time dog owners, as requested by readers Sarah and Ed Constable. They have two children aged eight and 10 and enjoy the outdoors. Given they are keen for a medium-sized dog, spaniels are ideal but may need lots of exercise, particularly working cocker spaniels. Hungarian vizslas also make excellent family dogs and are very good with children, as are labradors. However, a dog breed is a very personal choice, and there are many other lovely breeds in addition to these. We’re always happy to chat in more detail and offer advice for people getting a puppy. On the smaller side is the cockapoo, which has a lovely disposition and the added bonus of not moulting. With all of these breeds, do remember, if taking them on as puppies that you’ll need to dedicate a lot of time, training and care for the first six months. Alternatively, you can go for a mixed breed from dog rescue centres like the Dogs Trust. As these tend to be fully grown dogs, you’ll be able to see their size, and the charity will have spent time with them so will know their personalities and make sure you get something that suits your lifestyle. In terms of travelling in the car, all dogs travel well if trained. So here’s to lots of fun family holidays together – enjoy! THE GRANGE
IN FINAL £145K PUSH TO COMPLETE LIFTING EXPECTATIONS APPEAL & CREATE PLACES FOR 25 MORE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
T
he Grange, Surrey’s leading charity providing services to 100+ people with learning disabilities, is seeking a final £145,000 to complete a major refurbishment project of its Victorian building. It will mean 25 more people with disabilities, especially those with more restricted mobility, will be able to access valuable skills training and work experience. “It’s very sad –-some would say a scandal - that people with learning disabilities have the highest rate of unemployment in the UK - over 90%,’ says CEO Sally Lines OBE. But we can change that by helping them to build self-esteem and skills and to find work experience or paid employment. The first step is to get them from our waiting list into what will be a fully accessible environment in our Victorian main house. “The Lifting Expectations Appeal will create at least 96 new sessions every week to add to our already impressive range of skills and activities. These include growing and selling plants, catering for and serving in our two cafes, crafting wooden planters and bird boxes, every kind of art and craft activity, including working in our two gift shops, and mini enterprise experiences, such as fudge-making and book order fulfilment for Beyond Words Books publishing.” £475k raised so far - The Grange has raised £475,000 towards the refurbishment which will deliver an interactive media IT suite, two extra rooms for skills training and mini enterprises, and a Heritage Room telling the story of The Grange which dates back to 1938.
20 Looklocal Magazine - March 2016
Then it was The School of Stitchery & Lace for young disabled girls whose work included embroidery for the Royal Family. David Elliott, Chair of the Grange’s US Group, which represents service users, says: “Lifting Expectations will mean I can get my wheelchair upstairs to the new state-ofthe-art IT suite. The corridors will be wider and there will be automatic doors, so I can get about the whole site by myself.” “This is a fantastic and essential project,” concludes Sally Lines. “Work is already underway and if we can get the last £145,000, it will make a huge difference, as it will mean we can do the refurbishment in one go, and more quickly and economically than if we had to stop and start again.” ”It will really help people with learning disabilities, some of whom have been on our referral list a long time, waiting for this opportunity to access our services.” How you can help - the easiest way to make a donation to help The Grange with its final push is to buy an inscribed tile in a special artwork The Grange is creating to thank all those who helped fund the project. Please email LiftingExpectations@grangecentre.org.uk, go to www.grangecentre.org.uk or call 01372 455231.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
WHEN
BUYING
When buying a computer or laptop, there is a whole heap of jargon that people throw at you, expecting you to know what they are talking about - SSDs, RAM, MHz, wifi, HDMI and so it goes on. We have always felt that this is a very rude way to treat your fellow man, so yes, we can talk jargon with you, but we can also talk in finest English to ensure your needs are best met. There are a few pointers that you might appreciate knowing before you buy your new machine. The key components: The processor or the CPU - the engine that powers the PC. It is advisable to buy the best that you can, as CPUs are costly items and are not efficient to change or upgrade at a later stage. For the basis of a good allround home machine, we would usually advise either an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU. There are model variations within these CPUs, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Memory or RAM - the more the better, but this can often be retro-fitted. 4Gb of RAM is considered a minimum; going beyond 8Gb is often unnecessary. We have just started building machines with the latest, fastest DDR4 memory, which will move the boundaries on computers’ performance for years to come. Hard drives - the conventional mechanical hard drives have been using the same technology for around 20
A
COMPUTER
years. They are very economical, have huge storage capacity, but can be slow. Upgrade to a solid state hard drive (SSD), and the performance is phenomenal: they work at 15-20 times faster than the mechanical drives, they are more reliable (as they have no moving parts), but they cost more and have less storage capacity than the older type of hard drives. A great solution is to have both in a machine. The SSD runs the operating system and programs and the mechanical drive stores your data. Graphics cards - game players, photo and video editors and graphics users are better served by having a dedicated graphics card installed, which in some cases can cost as much as the computer. In most cases, using the onboard graphics is sufficient, and should you wish to upgrade the graphics, this can sometimes be added in a PC retrospectively, but unfortunately not in a laptop. Operating system - Windows is the dominant system here, and the versions currently available are Windows 7, 8 and 10. The free-of-charge upgrade to Windows 10 will still be available until June/July this year. Windows 7 will still be supported until 2020 if you would like to stick with a long-established favourite. We would recommend Windows 10 for home machines, as it works in a very efficient manner.

Did you, like me, hold the view That ‘slowing down’ was not for you? Mother, daughter, friend and wife Multi-tasking was a way of life, Mind and body geared to speed, There was no time or even need To stop, and think, to take a breather, Relax, slow down, make life easier. But gradually you had to admit, You’d put on weight and were far from fit! You no longer ran for that train or bus

by Marion Kemp
You simply hadn’t got the puff. And that grocery item in the shop Was too far back, too high on top! And crouching down, say, for frozen peas Played havoc with your dodgy knees. Do friends and family have a moan Because you didn’t hear the door or phone? And is reading labels rather a strain As the size of the print’s been reduced again? But help is at hand, for through the door Come lots of advice and pamphlets galore. A walking ‘work-out’, weights at the gym, A fab new diet! Get fit! Stay slim! The spirit’s kind of willing, the ideas are fine, It’s just a question of ‘finding the time’ But on further reading, you’re relieved to find It’s the younger age group they have in mind! But even when adopting a pace more sedate Time still flies by at an alarming rate. But all those plans you have in mind Must not be cancelled, just re-defined, As you sally forth, decisions made, Brandishing stick and specs, and hearing aid!

RECIPE

B U R S T
Now this is a great vibrant juice for you to make if you want to feel younger. The recipe comes from a book called ‘Eat Yourself Young’ by Elizabeth Peyton-Jones and is delicious. There are 5 key ingredients to feeling younger, and beetroot is one of them. Be brave and try it, it is fab! I have a juice attachment in my food processor (Magimix) which works a treat and means there is one less piece of extra kit. The leftovers I am now making into raw crackers with linseeds in my new dehydrator. Come and join in our monthly Vitality Group (£15) if you want to feel vibrant again - more info on the website!
INGREDIENTS: 24 medium carrots 1 beetroot 130g cucumber 115g cabbage
M ETH OD Flow all the ingredients through the juicer, then drink at once (but slowly) to get optimum nutritional & youthing benefits.

Angles
by Rachael Bannister I love the Common. It’s my place to play. I can go anywhere I want on my Common, as long as I can still see our house. If I do get lost, I just have to look up for the church spire and walk towards that. It’s next to the school house where I live. The second pond has a tree that’s good to climb, unless you go too high and then it gets scary. My friend Hilary goes down the slope to the edge of the pond but I daren’t because it’s quite deep at that edge and you could slip in. Sometimes, Mummy and I look for tadpoles there or collect pond weed. One evening, all the toads were croaking. And it was louder than snoring grandads. Mummy had never seen anything like it before and she’s seen a lot of countryside things because she grew up in the countryside. She told me that in the War, children picked bunches of violets and sent them by train to people in London – but now we have to leave them for other people to enjoy. We do have to pick dandelions for the school’s rabbits a lot though. In winter, we go twigging. My fingers get cold and red but Mummy wants ‘kindling’ for the fire. On Tuesday mornings, we walk across the Common to the shops. Harriet goes in the pushchair and me and Kerrie walk. On the way home we have a sweet when we get to the rose bay willow herbs. They’re one of my favourite flowers. I wish there wasn’t a golf course on our Common. I touched its neat short grass once when no one was looking - it was so soft, and once I stood on it with Hilary but not for long because a golfer might come and shout at us. You have to watch out for the golfers. Sometimes we see Meadow Pippets and feel sorry for them because they have to work really hard feeding the baby cuckoos. We get very excited when we find a fairy ring of toadstools. We mustn’t touch those but we do touch moss. Daddy is talking to Hilary’s dad, using big words in his quite important voice, so I mustn’t interrupt. Hilary’s dad is nodding. I think it’s about politics. I heard Mum say they had different politics. Daddy is still talking and talking and I am standing patiently because I mustn’t interrupt. They are talking about Europe. Our house is in Europe. It’s mostly in Surrey but it is in Europe as well. I can read the signs about Europe when we are in the car. Some signs say ‘No’ and some say ‘Yes’. At last he has stopped talking and I can say something. ‘Daddy, they’re not going to sell our Common, are they?’ ‘No, dear,’ he says. I’m glad our Common is not going to be in the Common market.

VOLVO
R E V I E W
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW VOLVO D5 INSCRIPTION
T
he motor-mad fraternity is about to be wooed by a handsome newcomer, or to be more accurate, an updated and uprated version of a long-standing legend. So, stand back and admire Volvo’s latest desirable stunner, the XC90, and if you are looking for sheer value for money, dig out the cheque book. NOW!! This re-booted seven-seater family wagon is a surefire winner on the hugely competitive SUV battlefront, following on in fresh form from its beloved predecessor which first graced the roads 12 years ago. And the likes of rivals BMW X5, the Audi Q7 and yes, even the immaculate Range Rover, are in danger of being overshadowed by this kingpin car with its five-star lustre. A harmony of great looks and sumptuously elegant style allied to absolutely spacious comfort, safety and performance are guarantees of another formidable market run for
the Scandanavian manufacturers. Unlike some opposing SUVs, the three rows of fulsome seating capable of coping with seven long-legged adults are Business Class, bordering on First, and with the sensibly situated sideways-on engine cockpit, room is extensive. As a family transporter, it could not be better. The first two rows have five seats that all recline and slide, and the third row is more than adequate for teenage restlessness.Behind all of that is a boot big enough to swallow up all the kit you and the kids would want to carry away on holiday. The 2.0-litre, four cylinder engine and four-wheel drive all add up to admirable refinement and driving ease, with eight automatic gears to smooth you and yours along motorways and down wiggly country lanes with equal agility. The whole plot is almost five metres long, so Volvo, mindful of parking problems and rear-viewing for space, have fitted a park-assist system that guides you safely into your tight target gap.
And just in case you fail to notice an invasive cyclist or a road-crossing pedestrian, mobile pressed to ear and absent-mindedly failing to see you coming, there’s an auto-brake that detects them and any other vehicles and stops you in your tracks. The drivers’ eye view in a wholly wow-factor interior, all glorious leather and grainy woodwork, is just the job, and all the on-board functions are controlled from a nineinch tablet touch-screen set-up that dominates the centre dash. And you need only wag and wave a finger, gloved even, near the screen to operate all sorts of services, such as the cute infotainment system, satnav, climate control and all manner of jam-packed technology. The wonderful Ray Davies is one of the most successful and influential songwriters to emerge from the glorious British invasion of the international pop scene of the mid-60s. He formed the Kinks with his brother, Dave, in North London in 1964, and Ray went on to sing, write, create some of the best-loved songs and anthems of the era. Hits such as You Really Got Me, All the Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting, Set Me Free, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Apeman, Come Dancing and Where Have All the Good Times Gone (which was later covered by David Bowie on his Pin-Ups album) are all evocative memories from an amazing time. Actually, I’ve always thought that Ray and David Bowie had something in common by singing in their English accents, unlike so many who adopted an American accent while singing about and also celebrating the sights and sounds of everyday life here. Other artists who would end up competing with them for chart places were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, the Animals, Them, the Who, Small Faces and many more. So, with all that as a background, it was a real pleasure to visit The Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End one evening last week to see Sunny Afternoon, the multiaward winning, feel-good musical which is based on the music of The Kinks. Life wasn’t always smooth for the Londoners. Having got into a dispute with America’s musicians’ federation, they were banned from touring in the US for 4 years, which cost them millions, and the on- and off-stage infighting between Ray and Dave often meant an edgy, tense relationship. The Kinks’ extraordinary story, which unfolds in Sunny Afternoon, is a must-see. More than just a cavalcade of some great hits, it’s a show which is both enlightening and entertaining in equal measure and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves the 60s and remembers the Kinks’ contribution with affection.

BOOKHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
BOOKHAM TREE NEWS
Since 2012, we have planted 100 trees in public places in Bookham. The 100th tree was planted on a damp February day on the Green at Barn Meadow Lane, witnessed by a gathering of soggy friends and onlookers. The Prunus sargentii, specifically requested by residents, will provide spring blossom and excellent autumn colour. Two other trees were also planted on the Green, plus others down Barn Meadow Lane. A letter to the BRA website asked if we had looked into getting Bookham residents to help us care for the new trees, as they rightly pointed out that they belong to all of us and were paid for through our taxes. Yes, the tree wardens would love you to help! We consult residents before we plant, and enlist their help in watering. Hackney Tree Musketeers (as their tree warden group is known) have been planting and enlisting residents’
help for many years. They publish an excellent Tree Care Guide too (see it at www.treemusketeers.org.uk). Their best tips are to water trees as much as you can in spring and then continue when it is hot and dry for 3 to 5 years! It is impossible to over-water trees growing out in the open. When the trees are about to burst into leaf or flower, they need a large amount of water. It should be easy to spot our new trees in Bookham’s verges, as they are staked, tied and mulched. Keeping grass and weeds away from the trunk will help the water get to the tree roots, so a little street gardening goes a long way to help too. In time, the BRA and the Tree Wardens hope to replace all the street trees lost over the past 40 years. This 100 represents just a small proportion of those planted when our roads were originally laid out. Frances Fancourt - BRA Tree Warden

BOOKHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Bookham is looking a lot tidier, following a litter pick organised by the Bookhams Residents’ Association (BRA) on Sunday 6th March. Nearly twenty people turned out on a rather chilly Sunday morning and each filled on average a sack of litter in just an hour and a half. With an eye on the wider environment, as well as the local environment, cans and bottles were separated out to be recycled. After the volunteers had finished, they warmed up with a well-earned cup of coffee and debated whether they should feel pleased about having collected so much or dismayed that there was so much to collect. Organiser Margaret Lawson said “I was getting depressed about the amount of litter I saw while walking around the village and wanted to do something about it. When I read about the Clean for the Queen campaign,
it seemed like an ideal opportunity to get people involved”. Margaret added, “I’m delighted with the response we had and we’ll be repeating the exercise on the first Sunday of the month from now on. One of the local Scouts joined us this time and we’d particularly encourage young people to help keep our village clean.” A huge thank you to all those who came to help pick up litter on 6th March, despite it being Mothering Sunday. Many thanks also to those who have been litter picking solo. We do appreciate what you have been doing. The next litter pick will be on Sunday 3rd April at 10am. Anyone interested in helping out should meet at the top of the High Street. For more information, contact the BRA via their website www.bookhamresidents.org.uk or phone 0300 030 9890.

Queen Mary 2 The Statue of Liberty, highlighted by a shaft of dawn sunlight against a backdrop of New York’s spectacular silhouetted skyscraper lights, was the greeting icon as Queen Mary 2 sailed majestically towards landfall after a week-long crossing of the Atlantic from her UK base in Southampton.
Despite a night’s farewell partying until 2am, my and my wife Delia’s 4.30am awakening by the butler tending our Queen’s Grill stateroom, was boosted by the anticipation of being welcomed by the skylined iconic figure towering over New York harbour, America’s gateway. Like standing beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, eyeing Japan’s snowcapped Mount Fuji from the cosy comfort of the Bullet Train or visiting the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, as if beckoning, offers untold promise of new experiences. It was a scene described to me years ago by my grandfather who was Third Engineer on the original Queen Mary...that and his tales of revelling and cocktailpartying with movie legends such as Erroll Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, David Niven, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. A summons to New York by my publisher was the perfect opportunity
for me to realise a lifetime’s ambition and follow in the footsteps - or rather the ocean wake - of my grandfather and sample ultimate style on the go. And, believe me, the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest, widest, tallest liner ever built, exemplifies the highest grade possible of totally pleasurable life on the ocean waves. I reckoned she would be big, but even my wildest imaginings fell far short of actuality when I left the reception zone at Southampton and was confronted by the Queen, towering as high as a 23-storey building, 200 feet above the waterline and stretching 1,130 feet long. My amazement rarely faltered over the following eight days at sea in this 150,000 tonner which, with its Rolls Royce units, equivalent to 115,328HP, and stabilizers, made such lightwork of three days of riding gale force eight waves that it barely stirred a ripple in our pre-dinner bubbly. For those who worry about sea-
sickness, the worst the notorious Atlantic can throw at a ship like the QM2 is little more than a mere disturbance without discomfort easily dealt with and levelled out. And that brings me to another worthy aspect : the exquisite dining. Every night was a black tie and cocktail dress event for couples who revelled in the formality and festooned themselves in finery worthy of any red carpet showpiece gala. If you had forgotten to fill your Vuittons with the necessary evening apparel, there was a full range of the poshest formal wear available for hire. Feasting in the 1,347-seater Britannia Restaurant, an elegant dinery stretching the width of the ship, three decks high - and with a vast staircase, the grandest of entrances - was the perfect setting for some show-offery. Talking about showing off, Trophy Wife Delia and I were invited ahead of nearly 2,000 fellow passengers to dine exclusively with the captain, Kevin Oprey, at his table, along with
tenor Jonathan Ansell, starring on more than two million albums, and the top of the bill in the QM’s tiered 1094-seater theatre. The delights did not end there. I found myself heading daily to the classy bows-end pianobar Commodore Club to meet up with new-found friends.

Our highest grade stateroom, with its balcony, bar, TV and vast doublebed, was a spacious sanctuary, served discreetly by our own immaculately dressed butler who, at whatever time, day or night, he was asked to be in attendance, was never a splitsecond late. We ate mostly in the exclusive and efficient cosy 200-place Queen’s Grill with its ocean views and cuisine on a par with the finest on-shore dineries. Passenger care was the watchword, with attention paramount, whether in or around one of the four swimming pools, the spa, the gym, any of the 14 bars, the cigar lounge or the planetarium. If isolation is your preference, there is ample deck space to find a quiet spot where you can snuggle on a deck chair under a blanket and read a borrowed book from the library and its 10,000 tomes. Before you know it, your butler, bearing your regular nightcap, is inquiring:”Shall I awaken you in time for your first sighting of the Statue of Liberty?” With the apology: ”It will be about 4am.” And there she is on Liberty Island, one of our planet’s most notable landmarks, 93 metres high, with seven spikes in her crown representing seven oceans and the world’s seven continents, and with 354 unseen steps up to her crown
Ritz-Carlton Hotel opposite Central Park and a casual stroll away from Fifth Avenue and Times Square. And our fussed-over luxury lifestyle starts all over again. Not since I was last in New York, when I arrived by Concorde from Paris, had I been fortunate enough to sample the high life unique to this vibrant metropolis, like the tasty cuisine in the uppercrust diner, the Auden Bistro, in the Ritz-Carlton. And in between, the down-to-earth value-for-money warmly welcoming Italian family restaurant Antica Bottega del Vino, a five minute stroll away from the hotel’s front door to its pavement terrace. I was very pleased to see that the place had not really changed since my last visit. My four days in New York passed in a flash and I would have eagerly made a leisurely return to London aboard the Queen Mary 2. But sadly, an urgent diary date in Cobham had me flying home. Ah well, it was very nice while it lasted... By Ted Macauley

ou may have seen in the local press or on social media that there have been three thefts of York stone slabs recently from the formal gardens at Polesden Lacey and from some private dwellings in Westhumble. This type of theft involves considerable “effort” by thieves, not least because of the amount of physical effort involved in lifting stone slabs, as well as the time involved and the necessity to use a vehicle to transport the stolen stone. It seems likely, therefore, that someone may well have seen “something” that aroused their suspicions but has not yet called in to police. If you believe you may have seen something that didn’t appear “quite right” but were in two minds as to whether to call it in or not, we would always prefer that you do. If you have some York stone at your property, you should consider some additional deterrent measures against potential theft. The stone can be security marked with various forensic property marking products that are available on the market. One company with provides this type of product is selectamark.co.uk These products, along with the accompanying signs you can display, advise clearly that items have been marked and can be traced. Further information can be found at: - https://www. selectadna.co.uk/ Whilst we acknowledge that this is not an absolute deterrent, it can go some way to reducing the risk of theft, and in the event of slabs being stolen and recovered, being able to prove who they belong to.

According to the Earth Day Network, it takes roughly 96 trees to absorb the amount of CO2 produced by one person in a single year. Visit www.earthday.org to find out more about Earth Day on 22nd April and how to get involved. Visit footprint.wwf.org.uk to do a quick and easy assessment of your own carbon footprint. The Ten Things You Can Do page on our website has plenty of suggestions to help reduce your carbon emissions.
