village day

pace Age is the novel theme of Bookham Village Day on Saturday 17 June, marking the 60th anniversary of the Russian Sputnik capsule blasting into orbit. So, lots of scope for children from local playgroups and schools to interpret with their costumes when they take part in the big High Street parade which begins the day at 11.40am. It will be led by Jason Wright’s vintage Austin 7, with Brian White’s Magna Jazz Band and the Steelonium Steel Band providing the music. The parade reaches the Old Barn Hall field in Church Road around noon, with lots of attractions and entertainment throughout the afternoon. Main sponsors, The Vineries Garden Centre, will have a colourful display of plants for sale in the car park. Last year’s popular Buckin’ Bronco’, sponsored by Elio’s/DiCarlo’s, is returning, and Bocketts Farm will be bringing along their animals. There will be music across the field, and an open-air bar. Non-stop arena

entertainment will include belly dancers, Tai Chi and local school displays, and the popular Stomping Nomads band. Burgers, hot dogs and a variety of other food will be served, while in the Old Barn Hall, lunches and teas will be available all day. Prizes go to the best parade entries and most attractively dressed stalls. Village Day is followed by a week of activities during Village Week, starting with Open Gardens on Sunday 18 June. Events include bridge during the day on Monday 19 June, the highly competitive village quiz on Tuesday 20 June, and a family barn dance ends the week on Friday 23 June. All the events take place at the Old Barn Hall. Village Day is organised by Bookham Community Association to raise money to keep the Old Barn Hall running for the local community and providing the Bookhams Bulletin four times a year. ASK BRUCE:

PLAYING BALL Look Local reader Peggy has a working cocker spaniel who loves to play ball over and over again. Peggy asks: will this repetitive running after the ball damage his leg joints or, as a working dog, is he able to withstand a lot of exercise? It’s great your dog loves to play, Peggy, but the intensity of this repetitive activity could be doing him more harm than good. Chasing after a ball if done to excess can be harmful for dogs, even fit working dogs. Very often, they get too tired, but it takes a while for you to realise this, and by the time you do, they will have become overtired, over-exercised and will have risked putting unnecessary pressure on their joints. The sudden changes of direction that are involved in playing ball can also put too much stress on your dog’s legs, so try to avoid this. It’s best not to overdo any one activity. As with all things, everything in moderation is fine. Look for alternative types of play instead. Spaniels are well known for their intelligence as well as their high energy levels. Why not introduce a slower form of play where they need to engage their mind, such as hiding the favoured ball or some dog treats in a small space for them to sniff out? Still great fun, but much kinder on the joints. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Bookham. olesden Lacey, a National Trust property situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Surrey Hills, now boasts two new lookouts, offering majestic views across Ranmore Common, thanks to hard work by an army of staff and volunteers. Twice this winter, staff and volunteers from all departments across the property came together to clear the brambles, scrub and trees that were completely obscuring the views. Staff from visitor reception and catering, marketing and events, support services and house conservation all took up saws and secateurs alongside the gardens and countryside team. Senior gardener William Burridge has calculated that it has taken approximately 50 people 1,000 hours to clear the newest viewpoints. November’s scrub bash cleared a new promontory on the east side of the gardens. The work has opened panoramic views down into the valley and out across the rolling hills of the common beyond. Hand-crafted circular oak benches invite walkers to take a quiet moment of contemplation as they look out across the land. Later in February, the team set to work clearing the second

18 Looklocal Magazine - June 2017

viewpoint in a quieter, more secluded area in the western part of the formal gardens. It’s rarely used by the majority of visitors who prefer the wide open spaces of the South Lawn. This secret viewpoint looks down upon peaceful grazing fields in the valley, currently used by Steve Conisbee, Polesden’s tenant farmer. “Both sites were a challenging mix of steep slopes and tangled vegetation. We dealt with the scrub by cutting it down with hand tools and burning it in situ but it was extremely hard work”, said Burridge. “However, it was great to see so many different teams getting stuck in, helped by the lure of bacon sandwiches and tea!” In the past year, the countryside team has cleared six hectares of holly scrub. This is vital conservation work, as holly is an invasive species that stops sunlight getting to ground level flora, preventing younger trees flourishing. “We have to clear the scrub and vegetation, otherwise nothing new would be able to grow, due to the lack of sunlight,” explains Area Ranger Jamie Parsons, “so clearing scrub allows a new generation of plants to thrive.” To find out more about Polesden Lacey and conservation work in the garden, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/polesdenlacey

B

ookham Gramaphone Club was formed in 1952 by an enthusiastic group of classical music lovers. In those days, all music was played on vinyl LPs. When CDs were introduced, the club renamed Bookham Recorded Music Club to reflect the new medium which is still used today in conjunction with up-to-date high quality equipment. Two of our founder members are still alive, though sadly in poor health, and can no longer attend our meetings. One of them, Roy Flogdell, who is amazingly knowledgeable on all aspects of music, used to produce an annual show in the Old Barn Hall, always well attended, and raised many hundreds of pounds for charities. At our peak in the 1980s, membership was nearly 100 and we used to have coach outings to concerts in London and at Fairfield Halls, Croydon. We also went on 2 occasions to Finchcocks, the music museum in Kent, now diasappointingly closed to the public. Sadly, in spite of classical music being popular on radio and TV, we are unable to get the younger generation to join us.

22 Looklocal Magazine - June 2017

+

Our club is the largest in the West Surrey Region of the Federation of Recorded Music Clubs, which includes Godalming, Guildford and Haslemere, as well as Bookham. We have an annual reunion, held in Guildford. Bookham Recorded Music Club meets fortnightly on a Thursday evening from 7.45 - 10.00pm, Sept. to May, in the Harrison Room of the Old Barn Hall. Our programmes are generally presented by our members, but we have a guest presenter occasionally. The music is mostly classical but quite often includes jazz, film music and popular music from the early 20th century. This year, to celebrate our 65th anniversary, we are hosting a summer tea-party with seasonal music on 26th July at 2pm in the Harrison Room. On this occasion, we will be joined by members of Guildford Recorded Music Club who are celebrating their 70th anniversary. We would also welcome anyone who has a love of music to join us: we would love to see some new faces. You might find a new joy in your life - the beauty of good music. If you would like to attend, please contact Sheila Roberts on 01372 454019 so that we know how many to cater for.

TOM JONES

AN OPEN AIR CONCERT AT SANDOWN PARK RACECOURSE +

19TH JULY 2017

+

Join in the conversation online #JCLive17 1. Your popularity never seems to wane and your fanbase continues to attract new, younger generations. Why do you think that is? It’s unavoidable and true that all performers and artists go through ups and downs. The only thing you can do is have confidence in yourself and your abilities and hope that the work you do is well received. It’s impossible to predict that moment in time when somebody who sees you will be the person who will offer the next opportunity. And who knows where that opportunity will lead? 2. You’ve played at Sandown Park racecourse before (3 years since the last time). What is it about the racecourse shows that you enjoy playing, as we know you have done a few for The Jockey Club Live around the UK before? The racecourses put on a great night out for everyone. Who wouldn’t want to come to see the world’s best horses and jockeys run, have excellent food and drink, have great fun with their friends and see top-notch entertainment? 3. What can people who haven’t seen you before expect from a Tom Jones concert? If someone hasn’t seen me live before, they will get more than they ever imagined. This is the same for all live performances (if they’re good), and it’s the reason why people spend their hard-earned money and precious time to go out and experience a live show: they’ll get to know the performer much better and will be taken to a

24 Looklocal Magazine - June 2017

wonderful place. 4. If there were one show that you’ve done during your career that you could relive, which one would it be and why? You can never relive the past in the same way, so although I appreciate and enjoy the memories, I always look to the future. 5. With such a catalogue and recent criticallyacclaimed albums, how do you keep your set lists interesting for you, but also ensure your audience goes home happy? By mixing it all up and keeping things fresh. Actually, most people are delighted by surprises. They feel invigorated when they’ve experienced something unexpected. There are a few things I keep the same as well, simply because they are so good as they are. 6. It’s fair to say you’ve recorded a lot of different musical styles throughout your career. Have there been any genres that you haven’t done and would like to explore, or some that you just don’t want to touch? Although I’ve been pretty flexible over the years, of course there are genres that I just wouldn’t touch because it wouldn’t sound genuine coming from me. However, there are always elements of things that are worth having a crack at, as you never know if a contribution from me would work as a unique flavour for a producer or artist.

7. We’ve heard that you used to own some horses in the 60s. How hands-on were you and did you get enjoyment out of it? Would you consider ownership again, even as part of a syndicate? I love horses but never had the time to be very handson. I left that to the experts. I never thought about an investment, but perhaps I will! 8. It’s great that you’re back with The Voice. Was it an easy decision to make when ITV got in touch? Once I got the measure of things from the producers, it was an easy decision. I had such a great time with my fellow coaches this year, and the whole ITV production team was excellent to work with.

9. Does the fact it’s on ITV rather than the BBC make any difference to how the show is working and the chances open to the acts coming through the series? Well, that depends on so many things. The fact that ITV is a commercial venture does help the record company integrate into the process, but ultimately there are so many factors at work that contribute to the success of an artist. Being on The Voice is just one opportunity, and it’s a helluva test of talent and personality. If the contestant can get through to any point in the show, then take away what they’ve learned, they’ll be better off for it.

N

ot a phrase so often used these days, but go back thirty years and this ubiquitous description was quite common. It covered a myriad of conditions, many of which women suffered in silence, not knowing that many of these, especially those surrounding childbirth and its aftermath, were treatable. It is perhaps not so different today: women still experience the same problems as they have always done but not all are aware of the range of conditions that can be treated successfully by a specialist women’s health physiotherapist. Almost any condition that can be directly related to the pelvic floor, including a womb prolapse, can be treated by physiotherapy. Bookham Chartered Physiotherapy Service Ltd is now able to provide this service and has recently been joined by Laura Barrett, a specialist women’s health physiotherapist with over ten years’ experience in her specialism. Although Laura treats a broad range of conditions, many of them post-natal, part of her role is to ensure that pregnant women are physically as well prepared for birth as possible, with the result that problems resulting from childbirth are minimised. Not all conditions she treats are related to pregnancy, and one which impacts on many women, irrespective of age, is urinary incontinence. Many people do not tell their doctor about their incontinence, due to

26 Looklocal Magazine - June 2017

embarrassment. Some wrongly think that incontinence is a normal part of ageing or that it cannot be treated. This is unfortunate, as in many cases it can be successfully treated or significantly improved by physiotherapy. Laura has gained her specialist knowledge and experience working both in the UK and overseas, and was heading up a specialist Women’s Health unit in the Middle-East before joining BCPS. LOOKING FOR

DOG

LOVERS!

Top of the Pops When asked about my recollections of Top of the Pops, my memories are usually entwined with those of John Peel. I felt blessed to be cast as one half of our DJ duo, The Rhythm Pals, which allowed us to to be a bit silly (OK, more than a bit ‘silly’), with extravagant costumes and dodgy gags, As John’s widow Sheila wrote in her contribution to Peely’s biography, Margrave of the Marshes, we took turns in coming up with an absurd theme to run through any given Top of the Pops. I would often arrive home after one of our Top of the Pops sessions with stomach ache from laughing so much at Peel’s banter. Mind you, it didn’t all go smoothly. We ‘worked’ together on TV from the late 70s until the mid 80s but he almost got himself banned forever from an appearance he made on his own in 1968. As Sheila recalls, ‘After introducing himself as “the one that comes on Radio 1 late at night and plays records by sulky Belgian art students dying of TB”, he was supposed to say instead “here’s the latest happening platter from Amen Corner”, or words to that effect, but nothing came to mind, as his usually fertile brain had gone blank. As John tiptoed towards the exit after the show had finished, the producer spotted him, stamped over and said “I’ll make sure you never work in television again.” ‘ Those were among the most wonderfully thrilling words John had ever heard, since he had no desire to set the world of television aflame with his undisputed talents in front of the camera, and that was the way it was until a decade later, when he discovered just how much fun he could have by simply being himself. I’ll have to trawl through the archives to find some merriment of his later career on TOTP when the Rhythm Pals gave him a new lease of life.

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

Would you like a little extra income? Roz Bourne phone: 01372 453047 | 07969 196 227 email :kt@waggingtailsuk.co.uk www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/kt/carer-enquiry

family chicken casserole +

I want to tell you about my discovery of ‘Just Add Wine’. It’s concentrated red wine that you can add to your casserole, bolognaise etc without sacrificing the contents of your own wine bottle. I hate anything in a packet – but to my amusement and amazement, this is brilliant! 92% real full bodied red wine with a tiny bit of stevia to sweeten (good in my book!). Just try it! No fuss, fast, dramatic improvement to even a simple tomato sauce. I’ve been using it as a marinade too – so get those BBQ’s out and give it a whirl! The fun part of the story is that Neil Osborne, its creator, lives in Fetcham, with his lovely wife Nicola and two young boys and isn’t it great that we can support a local family in such a delicous easy way. (available in Sainsburys)

BEINTHEKITCHEN.CO.UK BE@KASSAPIAN.COM 01372 803 821

INGREDIENTS:

8 medium chicken thighs, bone in, skin on salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 large onion, finely chopped 3 sticks celery, finely chopped 2 large carrots, cubed 1 large clove garlic, crushed 1 tsp plain flour 750mls chicken stock (only 500 mls if using wine from bottle) 2 sachets ‘Just Add Wine’ 1 bay leaf sprig of fresh thyme 350g chestnut mushrooms, quartered 1 tbsp butter

TO SERVE:

1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

34 Looklocal Magazine - June 2017

METHOD:

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C, Gas 3. 2. Heat a large saute or frying pan. Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper, then lay in the pan, skin side down. Fry for about 5-8 minutes or until the skin is crisp and golden. As the fat from under the skin melts, you will need to tip the excess out of the pan into a bowl. This will stop the fat spitting and allow the chicken to brown nicely. 3. Transfer the chicken to a plate. Put a spoonful of the melted chicken fat back into the frying pan with the celery, fry for a couple of minutes, then add the onion and carrot. Fry until golden, stirring from time to time, adding a little extra fat if necessary. 4. Add the crushed garlic and cook for 30 seconds before stirring in the flour. Add the chicken stock and ‘Just Add Wine’, then bring to the boil, stirring. Add the bay leaf and thyme, cover with a lid and place in the oven. Cook for about 45 minutes. 5. Fry the mushrooms in the butter until golden brown, then add them to the casserole and continue to cook for a further 30 minutes or until very tender and the meat is falling off the bone. 6. Strain the juices into a large saute or frying pan & reduce by boiling rapidly until you have a good sauce consistency & flavour.

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. 01372 370300

We have previously reported on the variety of email and telephone scams where fraudsters have attempted to gain control of your computer and then claim that they can “fix” problems for a very tidy sum. These scammers are still very active in our area, so be cautious. Our advice is don’t open unexpected emails with attachments and don’t entertain unexpected phone calls which claim to be from any of the large IT manufacturers such as Microsoft: they are unlikely to be calling you. The scammers have become more confident in their methods. Recently, there was a report that both Google and Facebook were taken for more than $100m in a fraud lasting from 2013 to 2015. Further information can be obtained on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ technology-39744007. If you feel you have been a victim and you would like your equipment checked over, please do get in touch, as this is something we have carried out for many concerned users. Data backup and security Probably the most important thing about your computer is the data is holds, whether this is your documents or photos or music collection. The most

mechanical component of your computer-, and therfeore the most unreliable, is the hard drive where your data is stored. We have seen an increasingly high number of failed drives recently, where the users have no backup and this is the only copy. There are some really simple steps to back up your data and remove your reliance on having all your data in one place. The most common options are: • USB external drive - this plugs straight into your machine and you create a copy of the required information. The benefits are it’s low-cost, starting at £55.00, and reasonably quick; the disadvantages are the external drives can fail, the copying is often a manual process and can be overlooked, and only available to that one user. • Network-attached storage (NAS) - this plugs into your router. The advantages are that many users can access the information, many hard drives can be in a NAS, thus offering greater resilience and capacity,. The disadvantages are that it’s a bit slower to copy large volumes of data to, and at a higher cost. If the NAS is in the same building as the computers, all data could still be lost if you suffer a flood or fire. • The Cloud - we have a facility where your data is automatically backed up as soon as it is created. The data is copied offsite and has full security, encryption and protection. The disadvantage is that sometimes, copying large amounts of data can take a while. This backup facility is included as part of our Total Care package. This is the backup most businesses are using.

I

citroen

Ted Macauley test drives the new 1.2 Citroen C3

don’t know whether it’s because of my Hollywood handsome looks, but ego-tripping conceit apart, I attracted a whole new wave of stares and intensely curious glances a couple of weeks back. Then I realised it was not so much me as my transport. A rather funky, if not quite off-the-wall but certainly gaudy so-called super-mini…the latest offering from Citroen in the guise of the C3. Or should that be C-Me? Geddit? Mercifully, as it was a beamingly bright day when it was delivered to ChezMac, I was wearing sunglasses to rescue me from the glare of the stark red, white and blue presence on my drive. Possibly no coincidence either (and probably little to do with the sunshine) that the delivery man was similarly bespectacled. I could have mistaken it for a rather more colourful Royal Mail delivery vehicle or a mobile advertising extravaganza, seeking to advertise and spread Manchester United’s worldwide fan base. Whatever…it glowed. Positively GLOWED. Eliminating any affection I might have nurtured. Proof that I was not being over-sensitive to its eye-catchiness was the ceaseless attention paid to it when I gave it a squirt around the masses of the M25’s denizens, or around Elmbridge, and then as the blinding backdrop to my favourite rural diner. ‘Show off!’ joked an old friend as he smoothed away in his midnight blue Bentley. ‘Knowing you, you will enjoy riding around on that rainbow,’ he sniggered. And this was only my first day. I had another six to go. I was puzzled by the array of oddball lumps along the waistline base of the door. Never seen anything like it before. So why are they there? What are they? They look like DIY gone wrong. The answer, according to Citroen, is that they are a practicality, air bumps, easily-replaceable plastic panels, an optional add-on

+

to do an urban protection job…in other words, to swallow and soak up any dents administered by careless fellow parkers. Try as it might, Citroen has never been a serious challenge to the equivalent VWs and Fords, which are much, much more useful, sharper and better value rivals in a hotly-contested market. And in my humble opinion, that situation is unlikely to change very much, despite the efforts of the designers in their revitalised updating and upgrading mood. Alright, I admit I may sound like a conservative old grouch, so what are the car’s good points? Its cockpit rejoices in a comfy show of the sort of seating materials that you might see on your fireside three-piece suite. And the infotainment touch screen is a huge improvement, both in the clarity of its graphics and its prompt responses. What’s more, if you are involved in a pile-up, the dash-cam option retains footage of the incident just before and following the impact. And you can tweet and send off instagrams if, say, you are enjoying the view ahead or have just caught sight of a nice rear scene. All you have to do is press a button on the mirror and it will beam the snap to an app on your phone and then send on. And for a little car, it doesn’t labour during motorway effort, even though there’s a noisy windy reminder that you are on the move. But you would not want to be a long-legged six-footer like me on the rather cramped rear seats. My verdict: I would venture to suggest that the colourfully glowing C3 that I tested is a car for the young or young at heart. And that excludes me. Specification: Model: C3. Engine1.2. BHP 82. Acceleration: 0-62 mph in 12.3 secs. MPG:61.4. Price £14.035. I am now really, really looking forward to my next test drive... in the much-heralded Peugeot 3008 SUV. Bring it on...

poll results +

T

announced

he news that broke at lunchtime on Friday 5th May, announcing the results of the Advisory Poll concerning a possible parish council for Bookham, was a 5 to 1 clear message that Bookham is not in favour of this extra tier of local government. With a strong turnout of 53%, only 815 people voted ‘Yes’ to the proposal, a figure overshadowed by 4,114 voting ‘No’. The message is clear that the residents of both Great and Little Bookham are satisfied with the many strong organisations in Bookham which serve us all well and that the exceptional volunteer force covering so many aspects of village life is supported and appreciated. The BRA does not presume that everyone is happy with our contribution to village life, and we will reflect on what has been discussed over the past two years and see what we can do better.

+

During the next few months, we will be asking what you would like done in the village to improve our way of life. We will do this in conjunction with the other village organisations and our councillors, who, it should not be forgotten, are our elected voice into the providers of our public services. Our membership is growing and we would welcome more of you on board; if you feel that you can help the BRA in any way, please contact us via our website/ e-mail, or please leave a message on 0300 030 9890, and we will contact you as soon as possible. The final decision concerning the proposal for a village/ parish council will be made by MVDC on July 11, as this was an advisory poll ,and MVDC will take the result and all the other information they received into account.

T

he 1st Bookham Scouts opened their doors to commemorate St George’s Day by renewing the Scout Promise and showcasing their impressive facilities. The centre is just off Eastwick Park Avenue, which has a large multipurpose hall and lawn, a full-scale climbing wall and assault course (all very SAS!). When I first arrived, a game of tug-of-war was going on which had everyone on their feet, cheering them on. I spoke to Christine, the Group Scout Leader (GSL), who told me there are different groups, depending on your age. Ranked from youngest to oldest, they are: Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts. As well as outdoor activities, the Scouts take part in indoor and

outdoor games, crafts and cooking, says Christine. In the summer, there are camping trips for each group, including an overseas camp for the Explorer Scouts which takes place every three years, this year in Italy. The Bookham Scouts always welcome new volunteers. Christine explains the job includes running the group meetings once a week during term time. Scouts volunteering is extremely flexible and you don’t have to commit masses of your time either, despite what people might think! joins forces with rotary

C

hairwoman of Effingham-based charity Orangutan Appeal UK, Susan Sheward MBE, has been awarded the role of Director of Primates for an exciting new Rotary initiative. The Rotary Action Group for Endangered Species (RAGES) is a newly-established group with a mission to protect the world’s most vulnerable animals. As a member of the Bookham and Horsley Rotary Club, and with her vast experience of working with orangutans, Sue is the perfect candidate for the role. Attending a Rotary District Council meeting last weekend, Sue and the Orangutan Appeal’s communications officer, John O’Malley, gave an informative introduction to the new group’s aspirations for the future work of RAGES. Rotary’s John Glassford (District Governor nominee of Coolamon District, Southern Australia) started RAGES in 2016 and quickly identified the invaluable work being done by Orangutan Appeal UK, which RAGES has adopted as its chosen partner to represent orangutans. With an ultimate goal of raising awareness globally

through the vast reaches of Rotary, the new initiative supports projects for our most iconic and critically threatened species – initially, African rhinos, Asian pygmy elephants and the Bornean orangutan. RAGES will continue to identify at risk species, such as the bush baby, which will be added as the initiative grows. Of her new role, Sue said ‘To have been chosen for this position and to have the Appeal as a partner with RAGES is a fantastic achievement. After the devastating reclassification of orangutans from ‘endangered’ to ‘critically endangered’ earlier this year, they are even more in need of our help than ever. Being a part of the new and motivated RAGES action group is an exciting development for both Rotary and Orangutan Appeal UK.’ With orangutan numbers dwindling at an alarming rate in the wild, raising awareness of their plight is high on the list of priorities for Orangutan Appeal UK. Having Sue at the helm of this dedicated action group can only be of help in this fight to save one of our closest cousins. admin7@orangutan-appeal.org.uk

A

lthough Mole Valley’s towns and villages are generally lovely places in which to live and work, from time to time issues arise at specific locations which can build up, eventually impacting on the wider community and people’s quality of life. Problems can relate to any number of locations, for example recreation grounds, car parks, meeting places and residential areas. Issues such as anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, littering and noise nuisance can wear down people’s resilience and become life-changing if not nipped in the bud. Sometimes, it is the actual design of an estate which can contribute to why problems arise and make the situation more problematic to resolve. Also, if a location becomes untidy and looks neglected, it can encourage an attitude that no-one cares. This then leads to some of the issues mentioned above and a location will become designated a ‘neighbourhood issue.’ One of the most successful ways of addressing neighbourhood issues is through partnership working. This will often involve police, the local council, housing associations, residents’ associations, county council representatives and other partner agencies who can actually address practical issues that are being reported. There have been some very positive success stories of partnership-working which have resulted in significant

52 Looklocal Magazine - June 2017

+

improvements and a considerable reduction in anti-social behaviour and criminal activity. However, the main issue remains that sometimes people simply don’t bother to report their concerns. This can be for a number of reasons, including a lack of faith that anything will be done or fear of reprisals if the problems relate to specific people or families. But it’s so important for incidents and issues to be reported, otherwise lines of enquiry and the possibility of dealing with actual offenders are extremely limited. It is perfectly acceptable to call in and ask to remain anonymous. This can be done direct to police on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Calls to Crimestoppers are free, you will not be asked to give your name and they will pass on basic intelligence information to police. Ideally, however, we do prefer to know who has called to report a problem, as this makes it so much easier to build a case of evidence that can result in offenders being prosecuted. On a totally different subject, as the weather improves (hopefully), please remember to keep your garden tools and equipment secured. Consider making your items less desirable to thieves by painting your house name or postcode on them with gloss paint. The items are still perfectly useable but far less attractive to a thief, due to the effort required to remove any obvious identifying marks.

tasks for june

t last, some sunshine, huzzaaaaah. It makes such a difference to everything, from attitude to achievement, plus providing much-needed Vitamin D, so gwan, gwan, get out there and soak it up. There’s plenty to do this month, starting with the secateurs. Cut out the spent flower spikes of euphorbia at the base, but beware of the milky sap: it can irritate the skin, so wear gloves. Remove the old flower stems of hellebores, cutting them right down to the base, but avoid cutting out the new growth which should already be showing. Cut back oriental poppies when they finish flowering. Daffodil foliage is thoroughly dead now and therefore can be cut right out; you can mow the grass in which they grew without compromising next year’s flowers. Lots of dead-heading to do too: roses, of course, plus spent peony heads, the spent flowers of young lilac bushes and the first crop of dead heads from osteospermum so that they continue flowering well. Summer-flowering clematis is a bit of a diva, it does everything it possibly can to be noticed, with its big, blousy flowers. Propagate it by layering the stems: pin young shoots into the soil where they touch the ground and wait for them to take root. When established, cut them loose from the parent plant, dig them up with their roots intact and pot them up. Free plants, innit. If perennials are knocked over by the rain, stake

+

them upright as soon as you can. If left lying down, the growing tips will pull to the light, and when you lift the stems upright, the tips will be horizontal. The Anglepoise look. Other tasks for the borders: remove any self-sown sycamore seedlings (oooh, alliteration); sow the seeds of hardy biennials, such as foxgloves, and they’ll flower next year; tie in the new shoots of climbing and rambling roses. Now for the pots. Much as agapanthus like it hot, it does them no good if the pot dries out. If the flowers are allowed to wilt, their lifespan is reduced enormously, so water well, early morning or late evening. Lift the foliage around heavily-planted containers to check for snails lurking against the sides…it’s a favourite place. I will spare you the details of what I do to slugs and snails, but I’m sure you all have your own favourite murder scenario. Thick, long grass will strain or clog a domestic mower, so it’s better to strim it down gradually first and rake off the hay. Then you can run the mower over the stubble. Boost weak-growing lawns with a summer feed which is rich in nitrogen. This will green them up nicely. Don’t let grass grow around the stems and over the roots of young fruit trees (or any other trees, for that matter), as it seriously reduces their vigour. Finally, sit back and relax and enjoy the beautiful sights and smells of your summer garden.

inger-songwriter and Radio Two favourite Gordon Haskell has returned home to the UK, following eight years enjoying the Greek sunshine. He is set to play the Harlequin Theatre, Redhill, on Friday 2 June. Celebrating his 70th year, the writer of 400,000-selling ‘How Wonderful You Are’ - BBC Radio Two’s most requested song – is to perform a headline second set in concert, featuring songs from his jazz/blues/soulinfluenced songbook and including hits from his platinum-selling album Harry’s Bar. The show at the Harlequin Theatre forms part of a South of England ‘Timeless Tour 2017’, with plans to play the Midlands and North of England later in the year. Opening the night will be musical collective Hannah’s Yard, featuring the beautifully understated voice of 20 year old vocalist, Hannah Layton Turner. Since being

spotted by BBC Introducing, Hannah’s Yard has received considerable BBC regional radio airplay for each of their four acoustic pop single releases – think Norah Jones meets Fairground Attraction. DJs Alex Lester and Janice Long each supported the collective’s singles on their BBC Radio Two shows. Expect to hear original songs from their forthcoming debut album Beginnings, along with an eclectic mix of covers - hits from Sam Smith to James Taylor, Jack Johnson to Carole King, all given the unique Hannah’s Yard twist. Priced at £21.50, tickets for this unique night are selling fast. Visit http://www.harlequintheatre.co.uk/ for further information and phone 01737 276500 for the box office. This promises to be an exclusive warm and intimate evening of acoustic music from artists with some 50 years between them. www.gordonhaskell.com | www.hannahsyard.com

We are excited to announce the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is Animal Agents and it’s based around a group of animal detectives and their suspects, all illustrated by bestselling author Tony Ross, of Horrid Henry and Little Princess fame. Every year, children are challenged to read 2, 4 & 6 books, earning exclusive prizes for each stage of the challenge. It’s a fab way to keep the kids reading over the summer holidays. We couldn’t run the challenge every year without the help of our fantastic volunteers. Are you aged 14-25? Could you chat about books with kids and give them a love of reading? Volunteering is a great way for young people to boost their confidence, improve their CV, gain
