HELLO BOOKHAM The vibrant autumn colours seem to have arrived a little earlier than normal this year, maybe that’s been caused by the scorching summer? Anyway, it’s looking very pretty around the village and the conkers will soon be falling. Let’s enjoy the last few weeks of lighter evenings, before the time change slips us into early darkness…. (Clocks go back on Sunday 28th October) As always, we have an action packed magazine for you this month; in preparation for Remembrance Sunday in early November, a group of lovely local ladies have been very busy with their knitting needles! See page 16 for details. A charity crazy-golf event was enjoyed by many at Sandown Park Golf Centre recently. I’m sure you will recognise a selection of familiar faces who enthusiastically turned out to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice, a charity so close to many of our hearts. Organised by David and Michelle Smith from Wishing Well, this was a great way to raise funds and have a fun day out too! Thanks must go to the wide selection of local businesses who generously provided some great raffle prizes. £1300 was raised for this amazing charity. We have two great competitions this month; firstly the chance to win a family ticket to attend ‘The Railway Children’ at The Leatherhead Theatre, as part of their up-coming Leatherhead Rep Season. See page 18 for that. Our second prize, comes in the form of a book for motorbike racing enthusiasts! Written by our very own Look Local motorhead, Ted Macauley (who kindly writes our much enjoyed car review each month) about legendary Mike ‘the Bike’ Hailwood’s return to the TT. Read our review and see details of how to win on page 54. Good luck to all who enter. All this and lots more within, I hope you enjoy our October issue. Until next time, do take care,
Ros

SOUTH BOOKHAM SPACE CARNIVAL CAME TO BOOKHAM WITH A BANG!
Forget RIO, Venice, Notting Hill and all the rest! Bookham can party as much as any of these and did on Saturday 30th June at The Old Barn Hall, which was transformed into a real spirit of Carnival, with over eighty guests in a variety of party attire enjoying a sumptuous summer buffet and then dancing it off to the terrific live music of the Danny Lee band. The event, organised by Chris Browning of Bookham Tennis Club, raised £2000 to help fund the new Social SPACE construction, which when completed next year will accommodate up to 25 people, with its own kitchen facilities, plus balcony overlooking Outer

KNIT ONE, POPPY ONE
As this year’s special Centenary Armistice Day approaches, we can look forward to seeing some beautifully hand knitted poppies for sale in the village. A group of local ladies have been busily knitting for months! And as a result, they have produced over 2550 little works of art! For the 3rd year running, their poppies will be For Sale at Wishing Well and Rawlings Kensett Butchers in Bookham High Street, Casselden's Shoes in Church Road, Bookham and also at near-by National Trust, Polesden Lacey. In previous years, the knitted poppies have been in high demand so be sure to head to one of these local venues around 20th October to ensure success! Your donation will be very well received. All money raised will go directly to the Royal British Legion, as

with normal poppy sales. Last year the poppy knitters raised ÂŁ3700 for the British Legion and they hope to raise even more this year. Amongst, the knitted poppies there will be a small number of special 100 year anniversary versions, so keep an eye out if you fancy one of these! When I met the group a few months ago, I was delighted to also meet Mr Ron Pearce, pictured here with an impressive chest full of medals! A 100 year old war Veteran, Ron came to see how the group were getting along. Ron still lives independently, and enjoys tending his Koi Carp in his garden pond. As well as this, Ron still works regularly on accounts for The Royal British Legion, what an amazing man. Very well done ladies, it will be an honour to wear one of your poppies!

Leatherhead Theatre Competition Hidden behind a Leatherhead street-front is one of the best theatres of the 1960s. Access from the street is by way of a short corridor. A feature of the theatre is that all the foyer areas and the auditorium are accessible to wheelchairs. Standard now, this level of consideration of the disabled was outstanding when it opened in 1969, and won the building a new disability award in 1971. On the ground floor is the coffee bar. There is also a licensed bar open during evening performances and an area used as an art gallery and available to hire for exhibitions. As with many 1960s British theatres the auditorium seats are all on one steeply raked tier; unusually they are undivided by aisles, keeping the audience as a single unit. The auditorium is remarkably unaltered, with its original decor and its brick-tile walls with four expressive lighting slits curving out. Because of its thoughtful design and its relatively small number of seats, The Theatre is one of the most intimate and architecturally accomplished proscenium theatres of British modernism. Details of productions, opening and contact information can be found on:Â www.the-theatre.org

Be in the Kitchen RECIPE
SWEET POTATO, SAMPHIRE & SUMAC FRITTATA This little recipe whizzed into my head at the end of the summer when I had some leftover cooked samphire, so you might wonder why on earth I am bring it to you now, as Autumn is with us and the samphire season long gone. It’s all about having brilliant breakfasts and getting more greens in and defying the classic habit of having cereal from a box to start your day. Once in the groove, avoiding cereal or granolas first thing is life changing and this little recipe can be eaten hot or cold and for breakfast, lunch or supper – so, have a go, replace samphire for courgette or any other finely chopped green vegetable that you like and enjoy!
INGREDIENTS ½ smallish sweet potato (a large hand-

THEY DROVE ME
CRAZY IN ESHER! On Sunday 9th September at Sandown Park Golf Centre in Esher, David Smith from Wishing Well in Bookham, along with his wife Michelle, their friends Viv Barlow & Beverlie Isaacs, and Val Woodward & Sam Janes from the Princess Alice Hospice charity shop in Bookham and team held a charity Crazy Golf day to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Over a hundred people paid to play and along with a Winner’s Post tombola and a luxury raffle over £1300 was raised. Surrey Hills Community Radio station came along and entertained the players with a wide range of music throughout the event. www.surreyhillsradio.co.uk David Smith said “I am delighted with the success of the day. People have been so generous with their time, money and donations and this has enabled us to raise a great amount of money for this worthy cause” As always, Bookham businesses, too numerous to mention, were extremely generous in donating prizes. A special mention has to go to Georgia, Beverlie’s daughter, whose employer Willian Reed Business Media in Crawley www.william-reed.com donated an amazing array of wines and champagnes which no doubt contributed to the success of the raffles. Thanks also go to Sandown Park Golf Centre who generously provided the facilities free of charge and donated a whole raft of prizes to enable people to enjoy their amazing facilities on another visit. For more information about Crazy Golf and other activities at Sandown Park Golf Centre go to: www.sandownparkgolf.com David and the team want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for making the day a great success.
The Grange open State of the Art Heritage Room funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund
We were delighted to pop along to visit the new state of the art heritage room, designed to showcase The Grange charity’s historic collection of needlework and its fascinating connection with the royal family. The room has just recently opened to the public. The new facility, located in The Grange’s Victorian main house in Bookham, has been funded by a £97,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and tells the story of the charity’s beginnings as The School of Stitchery and Lace, which was first founded in 1938, to its current role as a charity supporting people with learning disabilities and assisting them to lead

independent lives. The project has involved carefully preserving the charity’s historic collection of needlework, which included embroidered items made for the Royal Family, photographs, letters and books. There are numerous letters between The School and royal households which give a rare insight into palace life at the time. One letter is from Queen Elizabeth’s nurse ordering a copy of a dress and there are also hand-drawn designs for Queen Mary’s nightgowns. We will have more to report on this fabulous, new learning and heritage space, in our next issue.
Volunteer drivers needed! Volunteer 1 hour a week and make someone’s day! The Grange helps people with disabilities lead independent and fulfilling lives but we urgently need volunteers who could give up 1 hour a week to: • Drive a person to their work placements • Drive people with a disability to social and sports activities • Act as a buddy for a person with a disability

GARDENING MATTERS HOW TO CREATE A WILDFLOWER MEADOW
Wildflower meadows grow best on open land which gets plenty of sunlight, unshaded by trees/shrubs/walls. Also, they should be somewhere undisturbed by people/pets: few meadow plants will survive frequent trampling. There are two different types of meadow, and it really comes down to the type of soil in which you intend to plant. Perennial meadows grow best in poorer soil. If you want to grow them in fertile soil, remove the top 15-20cm to expose the nutrient-poor subsoil in which to plant your seeds. Find an area in your garden which hasn’t been treated with fertilisers recently too, since low fertility is key for many typical meadow flowers and grasses. Annual meadows need good quality, nutrient-rich soil, ideal if you plan on planting your wildflowers in a part of your garden where you’ve previously grown plants, eg an existing flower bed/border. For both, avoid areas with large numbers of established perennial weeds, eg nettles/ docks/thistles. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, prepare the ground about a month before sowing to encourage weed seeds in the soil to germinate, giving you time to remove them before planting your wildflower seeds. Break up the soil with a fork, and rake the site to produce a reasonably fine, firm layer, removing any larger stones/root fragments. It’s largely personal choice as to how many different plants to sow. However, you should select a mixture of grasses and wildflowers: this blend is a key characteristic

of meadows. Tempting as it is to collect your own seeds from grasslands/verges, many species are protected by law and you don’t want to be arrested. The best times to sow your seed are early autumn (September-early October) or spring (April-May). To ensure it’s evenly distributed, mix it with damp sand or sawdust in a ratio of 1:3, scattering it by hand. Afterwards, lightly roll or tread the ground to settle the seeds. You can rake the soil but this may bury some seed too deep or allow lighter seeds to blow away. If the weather is very dry at sowing time, water lightly with a fine spray. It’s important to mow the meadow in the first year after sowing to encourage the flowers and grasses to grow strong roots. Cut to a height of 5cm after about 6-8 weeks of growth, and repeat every two months throughout the first summer. Remove any annual/perennial weeds which appear. From the second year onwards, cut spring meadows in July and through the remaining summer months, but summer meadows won’t need cutting until late August after the wildflowers have set seed. Leave part of the meadow margin uncut: insects will use dried stems and seed heads as shelters during the colder months. This area can be cut when the weather warms up in spring. Finally, top tip: leave the mowings in place after cutting to allow seeds to drop. If it’s a perennial meadow, collect the cut plants a few days later to prevent the soil becoming too fertile.

THE GARDENER’S BEST FRIEND BY DOMINIC BATCHELOR
I have lived in Bookham for the past five years after moving down from London to look after my mother and to start a new stage in my life. I find myself very fortunate to live in one the most beautiful locations in Surrey. As such my garden is home to quite a few critters whose characters are as complex and fascinating as our own. Out of all the avian residents, my favourites have to be the robins, who live up to the title of the gardener’s best friend. These cheeky critters are bold, curious and have little fear of humans. At this time, there are two pairs in residence. The first couple, whose territory lies in the front garden, are more inquisitive than their back garden rivals. If I do any gardening in the front, the male will pop down and hop around me, inspecting what I’m doing without any fear. When he feels hungry, he sits in a small tree outside my front window and either sings, or makes a high pitched ching sound. His mate will do likewise, but is more cautious. The other robin couple have the back garden all to themselves. They are more reserved than and not as tame as the ones in the front. The male utters a scolding warbling
song at me if I carry out any gardening work in his area that involves clearing weeds or old branches. Cute as they are, robins can be quite fierce with other, especially at feeding time. As soon as I put out their favourite food of mealworm pellets, both males from the front and rear gardens will confront and circle each other during the breeding season, which is usually from May to July. If tensions get heated they raise their heads facing straight up and if they fail to back off from each other a nasty fight will follow. On occasion I have had to break up these combats in order to prevent fatalities. One thing that did surprise me was how other small garden birds will defend their territory if it overlaps with that of the robins. I did not expect the normally timid dunnock to chase one of robins away from its nest nearby with a look of strong determination. From experience, I found that the best way to feed small garden birds including robins is to leave out small portions twice a day in at least three locations around the garden. This should prevent squabbles over food and gives smaller birds a chance of a meal without being pecked out of the way by larger avian species.

When Nigel Lewis-Baker MBE was diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer in 2004 his first reaction was to go out and buy a sports car! Well you would, wouldn’t you? Whenever I bump into Nigel, he has always “just” jumped out of a plane, published a book, walked the length of the country, worn a dress, organised a fundraising ball…. You get the picture. Nigel is an inspirational man who meets life, with cancer, full on! I have known Nigel for a number of years but have never had the pleasure of hearing him speak, so when he was due to go along to the Bookham Bees WI, I jumped at the chance. And I wasn’t disappointed. He explained in his own, very positive and upbeat way, how he was diagnosed, the journey of his treatment and all the side affects. He grew breasts, gained weight, lost energy, and has suffered many other adverse effects of the various treatments he has undergone. In 2007 when the radiation and hormone treatment started to fail, Nigel was offered a place on a 14 month clinical trial under the research team at Guildford. When the trial eneded in 2008 Nigel decided to stay with the research team and Professor Pandha, rather than return to the oncologist. Through the ups and downs of the various trials Nigel has suffered many side effects and setbacks, but he keeps a positive
40 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
outlook on life. In 2009 Nigel co-founded, with his friend John Blackburn, Topic of Cancer, as a local support group inviting other patients and their families to meet and share their cancer experiences. In 2013 it became a registered charity raising funds and awareness for immunothereapy research being carried out in Guildford under Professor Hardev Pandha. His tireless fundraising knows no bounds as you saw at the beginning of this article. Added to which he gives talks to anyone and everyone who will listen and not just our local WI’s. Nigel gives talks and interviews on radio, television, occasionally campaigns parliament and has appealed to NICE for new treatments. He has spoke to the United Nations in New York and with the All Party Parliamentary Group in Westminster. In 2014 he was honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his work with Cancer patients. If you would like to find out more about Topic of Cancer and the work that they do go to: www.topicofcancer.org.uk My thanks go to Nigel Lewis-Baker for an interesting and informative evening that he delivered with honesty, humanity and a liberal sprinkling of humour.

WORK
If you’re feeling past your prime Returning to work is a trying time. The Office you knew belongs to the past, Everything now moves incredibly fast With row upon row of square machines Issuing orders on viewing screens. You can’t avoid the new computer That throws up data and tells the future, A faultless memory, nothing’s missed, With everything stored on a floppy disc! A golden rule is, “Learn to Adjust, Watch your Hands, and Watch your Bust”, For new machines are so electronic And terribly sensitive, it would be chronic If leaning forward precipitated A chain reaction not anticipated, A wrong key pressed, it comes to a halt And angrily bleeps because of the fault. Your machine at home though out of the Ark, Never threw tantrums and refused to start! What you notice most of all Is the age of the people now in control, For youth and technology go together And at that “certain age” you wonder whether You’re able to cope? – But rest assured Employers like ladies who’re well matured, Efficient and friendly, prepared to adapt, Tackling all problems with patience and tact. These lines, of course, are senseless twaddle After running a home, the Office’s a doddle!! Isn’t it??

LOVERS!
I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

MIKE THE BIKE- AGAIN THE STORY OF MIKE HAILWOOD’S RETURN TO THE TT
I remember Mike Hailwood when he was motor car racing in Formula 1 in the early ’70’s. I was quite surprised when Ted sent us this book to review to discover that Mike “The Bike” Hailwood first found success racing motorcycles, well before his days in Formula 1. And this book is about his return to his first love - TT racing! Probably the most prestigious and certainly the most demanding road race in the world. He first raced motorcycles in 1957 at Oulton Park and went onto to have a spectacular career in Grand Prix motorcycling, also competing in 24 hours of Le Mans. But for me, his real achievements were in his Isle of Man TT racing. For example, he was the first man in the history of TT to win three races in the same week when he won in the 125cc, 250cc & 350cc. Whilst much has been written and documented about Mike Hailwood and his stellar career, this book, MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN is a personal tribute and tale by his great friend Ted Macauley, of his return to TT racing. After
an 11 year break in competitive motor cycle racing few believed he could make the grade. How wrong they were! Mike took the sport by storm winning the Formula 1 Class race! Mike the Bike -Again tells the story of his decision to return, his attempt to hatch the plans for his return with his friend Ted (but without his wife Pauline finding out!), his practice and training with the “modern” bikes, his spectacular return in ’78, the loss of his friend and colleague Tom Herron, just weeks before the ‘79 TT, his retirement -second time around; and his untimely death in 1981 in the most tragic of circumstances. The warmth of friendship shines out from this book. Well written, with love, humour and anecdotes that could only be told by someone who was there, this book is a must read. Bernie Ecclestone, a longtime friend of Ted Macauley’s writes: “Mike the Bike-Again is a fitting salute to his everlasting presence in the minds of all of us who were fortunate enough to see him race-and to know him”.
To be in with a chance to win a copy of MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN answer the following question:
In which year did Mike Hailwood return to TT racing? Email your answer and your magazine area to: ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

VW CARAVELLE CAR REVIEW
It may look like a delivery van, but don’t be fooled, the VW Caravelle is a supreme people carrier with style and panache and plenty of disguised practicality. It ranks among the poshest of the posh mini-buses with a comfort level for seven people, however long their legs, giving them the spacious comfort of a living room three piece suite. And if your budget can stretch into Volkswagen’s asking price you will be rewarded with superb value for your hard-earned. The huge Caravelle, based on and developed as a descendant from the legendary and iconic Camper, is a VW with a status reaching far above that of a van with widows. It is a unique and distinctive crowd carrier with handy cabin facilities to cope cosily with a full house of travellers. If I am sounding like an enthusiast then, great, I’m getting the crucial message across. I have to say VW’s splendid reputation for meeting the needs and requirements of the fussiest customers is personified...yet again...in this oh-so-carefully considered and developed offering to its long-established fan base as well as being a lure to newcomers to the painstaking brand. It ain’t cheap, but it offers unrivalled space and versatility for the family gathering, including all their belongings and luggage in 775-litre load bay, and looking for economy and elbow room on the move. It is the perfect runaround with huge side windows that offer panoramic views for the lucky passengers. From
a driver’s standpoint, seated nice and high with great cinemascopic views, the punchy engines like the 2.0-litre TDI, with its seven gears auto box, ensures it has swift and smooth acceleration. It has all the trimmings and helps you would hope for and expect in a Volkswagen, including dials, five inch touch screen, digital radio and switches you’d recognise from the tried and tested Golf. Three climate control settings, tinted rear windows and roller blinds, help maintain a relaxed and comfortable coolness in the vast cabin. The second row of seats are swivelling captain’s chairs and adaptable enough for that area to revel into a lounge-like atmosphere. To add to the convenience and party mood for the passengers there is an optional folding table or shelves to create a bed for a nod-off. If you fancy, and you are on a house move or you have tons of Christmas shopping, you can remove all the seats and convert the spacious carrier into a van.Second thoughts - it would be just as well to slide the back end bench forwards to create the necessary space. If you are looking for a practical carrier with an enviable comfort zone and you have the readies to fork out then go for it. The Caravelle is a winner. Upper class. Specification: Price range £39,049-£51,579. My choice, the 2.0TDFI.Executive DSG. Power:150bhp. 0-62mph in 13.0 secs. MPG 47.1. Price £45,747. Warranty: three years unlimited mileage. By Ted Macauley

TO “TRICK OR TREAT” OR NOT??
However unpredictable the British weather can be, there are always some events that come around every year including, of course, Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night. No one should need to be reminded about basic personal safety if you are planning to be out and about to celebrate either or both events but I would like to make sure that everyone is aware that some people find “Trick or Treating”, in particular, not so welcome!! Some of the older and more vulnerable people in our communities do not like to answer their doors after dark. It can make them feel vulnerable and anxious. Of course, that doesn’t mean that all people feel like this but it’s worth remembering that, if a person doesn’t answer their door there may well be a very good reason? In recent years, many households indicate that they are happy to be visited by putting out a pumpkin lantern outside their front doors but not everyone does this, so it’s worth bearing that in mind. This is also a time of year when we generally see
an increase in “cold callers” offering to do household maintenance work for a cash payment. This preys on people’s concerns that, perhaps, their guttering might leak or some roof tiles may let in the rain over winter. Please do not ever commit to having work like this done by someone you don’t know. It may well be a perfectly genuine offer but, quite often, the job turns out not to be necessary and the amount being charged can be extortionate! You actually live in a “No Cold Calling” area and should not be bothered by this type of activity but it does still happen, so if you are not sure – please don’t open the door!!! On a totally different subject, as the days start to draw in, please remember to try to make your home look occupied if you are not going to be there during the evening. Using a few simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern, to indicate movement throughout your home, can help significantly in deterring opportunistic burglaries. The most simple timers are relatively inexpensive and are really worth the small investment to help make your home safer.
