Welcome to our September issue, I hope you are all keeping well and that you have managed to enjoy the abundant sunshine over the past few weeks! It’s certainly been a sizzling summer this year if nothing else! As restrictions are now lifting in the UK and life is beginning to return to a more recognisable state, maybe some of you have even been lucky enough to get away for a summer break? ‘Staycations’ have been more popular than ever this year for obvious reasons, and I’m sure many have realised, maybe for the first time, that the UK shorelines have so much to offer. Personally, some of my favourite holiday memories have been made on UK beaches; Cornwall / Wales / Norfolk all are stunning and we are very lucky to live on this beautiful island! We are certainly getting back in the swing of things here at Look Local and we're doing our best to find a few interesting inclusions for you to enjoy. Kicking off this month with a really great book competition for you to have a go at, see page 18 for more information. Good Luck to all who enter. Also included, a lovely contribution regarding wild grass verges! Sounds like a great idea to me … take a read and see what you think, that’s on page 16. As well as this, some post lockdown thoughts from our poetic friend Marion Kemp on page 22 which I’m sure will make you smile :-) and a great feature about the wonderful work taking place locally with regard to the 'Community Fridge’ Enjoy! Enough from me for this month, stay well and I wish all the school returners/starters the very best in the coming month, Best Regards,

no-bake chocolate wafer cheesecake This no-bake, easy recipe is perfect to whip up anytime for family and friends. The combination of smooth creamy filling on top of a crunchy biscuit and chocolate wafer base is hard to resist!

ingredients

method

80g unsalted butter, melted, plus extra for greasing 150g digestive biscuits 5 KitKat Original bars, split into 10 fingers 150ml whipping cream 150g dark chocolate, roughly chopped 180g tub Philadelphia Soft Cheese 50g icing sugar 100g Greek natural strained yogurt ½ tsp vanilla bean paste

1. Grease the base and sides of a 20cm loose-bottomed cake tin and line with baking parchment. Whizz the digestives and 4 KitKat fingers to crumbs in a food processor, then mix with the melted butter. Press evenly into the tin, smoothing with the back of a spoon. Chill while you make the filling. 2. Heat the cream in a pan to just before boiling. Take off the heat, add the chocolate and set aside for 2 minutes, then stir to combine. Meanwhile, with a wooden spoon, beat the soft cheese, icing sugar, yogurt and vanilla together until combined. Mix into the chocolate-cream mixture, a large spoonful at a time, until combined. 3. Tip the chocolate mixture over the base and smooth the top, then chill for at least 6 hours but ideally overnight. To serve, lift the cheesecake from the tin and remove the parchment, then place on a serving plate. Decorate with the remaining 6 KitKat fingers before serving.

(Serves 12)

Dip your cake knife into just-boiled water, dry with a tea towel and you’ll find it cuts through cleanly.

Bookham’s Wild Flower Verges You may have noticed some lovely wild flowers blooming along our roadsides recently including the lovely display of small pink orchids in the centre of Bookham along the A246. 28 separate blooms were counted in July although only a couple persisted into August. Wild flower enthusiasts and the Bookhams Residents’ Association, working with Surrey County Council, have put in place a reduced mowing scheme along 3 areas of the A246 and soon you will see Blue Hearts appear to signify that these areas are being maintained for wild flowers and their much needed bees, butterflies and other essential ground force workers. The council has also instituted a more insect friendly mowing regime: they mow 1 metre alongside roads and footpaths for sight lines, and leave central areas of wide verges cut less frequently. With this we have seen an explosion of blossom from primroses and cowslips to alkanet, ox-eye daisies, cow parsley, yarrow, poppies and our lovely pink orchids to name a few. In Rectory Lane The Grange has reduced mowing along a section of their frontage and already has seen a diversity of wild flowers popping up. Many residents are following suit with wild flower swathes on Barn Meadow Lane green, the top of Woodlands Road and outside private homes. If you would like to include a bee friendly area near you, look at the Blue Heart scheme on bluecampaignhub.com or contact us for help in getting council reduced mowing put into place.

Whilst the majority of our regular sized verges will still be neatly cut, the wider unmown expanses will help our wildlife and wild flowers to flourish. The wild flower verges will be cut once a year in autumn. The mowings will be left in place for a few days to allow seed to drop, then will be collected up by volunteers for recycling. If you would like to get involved, contact Diane or Frances on 0300 030 9890.

TWO SUMMERS

A Surrey resident has revisited the ‘trip of a lifetime’ road trip around America he took 50 years ago – and his adventures are now published in a book published this month.

T

he book, Two Summers; Nixon and Trump by Greyhound Bus, has been praised by BBC journalist and books editor James Naughtie as ‘a lovely evocation of heady times in America’. Tim Albert took the first trip in 1969 when a student at Surrey University, and kept a detailed diary of his adventures. Last summer, by then a semi-retired journalist living in Leatherhead, he went back on the buses again. ‘The idea crept up on me unexpectedly when I was at the dentist,’ he says. ‘It was such a good idea that I felt I had to do it, even though I was worried that what I did without a second thought at the age of 22 would prove to be too much for my 72-year-old body. But I planned the 60 day route carefully, making sure I slept each night in a bed and not on a bus. Greyhound Bus travel has changed a lot in half a century, he says. The buses are more comfortable and generally on time, but there is one big change. ‘In 1969 I met all kinds of people – students, teachers, farmers, architects, soldiers going to and from the Vietnam war. This time on the buses I spoke to hardly anyone – they are all glued to their mobile phones’. He adds: ‘2019 was a fascinating time to be travelling around America – I realise now that it could have been the last summer of its kind that we shall see for some time. At times it felt like I was travelling through two parallel universes with two widely different populations. Some people told me that the President

was an incompetent liar; others that he was the only politician who told the truth. And a chief of police remarked that we had to be careful we weren’t “living through the last days of the Roman Republic”.’ One major difference from 1969 was the prevalence of guns. ‘I remember being shocked in 1969 by seeing policemen carrying guns everywhere. Now they’re everywhere. I even found myself being offered an AK-47 on my mobile phone. ‘One thing has not changed, however, and that is the kindness of individual Americans. I witnessed some extraordinary acts of kindness, and one morning I asked two ladies where I could find lunch and they started to look into their purses to give me money!’ More information on the author and the book can be found on www.timalbert.co.uk Two Summers; Nixon & Trump by Greyhound Bus is available from: Wishing Well, High Street, Bookham KT23 4BN – 01372 459969 Cobham Bookshop, 12A, Anyards Road, Cobham KT11 2JZ – 01932 862903

PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON LOCKDOWN A moth flew out of my lipstick I wasn’t really surprised I hadn’t used it for ages Being unable to socialize. I’ve spent more time in the garden The roses are doing well, But thanks to all that weeding My knees are giving me hell! As the car sat in the garage The battery unfortunately died, But the RAC gave me a new one And now I can go for a ride.

Behind closed doors at a disused youth centre! Throughout out the Covid 19 crisis, many organisations, both voluntary and government funded have worked tirelessly to help those in need of support. Two such groups are Bookham Community Fridge and Surrey Local Resilience Forum. And in July, they came together under one roof! Borne out of a need to change their operating premises, the currently disused Bookham Youth Club was identified as a suitable location for both groups. The Food Hub for Surrey Resilience Forum relocated from Guildford and Bookham Community Fridge didn’t have quite so far to travel, relocating from Bookham Baptist Church. On July 28th time was set aside to welcome a number of visitors who were keen to see how things were going at their new home. Paul Woodhouse, Unit leader for Runnymede Volunteer Police Cadets was the first to arrive to open the doors of the vacant youth centre to welcome in Cadets from Epsom, Runnymede, Woking and Guildford. The youngsters have been busy packing food boxes that support shielding residents during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Food Hub receives bulk ambient (non perishable) food which is then sorted into boxes and distributed by SCC Community Transport providers across the county. As lockdown lifts, the number of boxes being sent out is lessening, but food parcels will continue to be provided to vulnerable residents and those who may be self-isolating and in urgent need of food. Whilst the cadets were busy beavering away with the food boxes of tinned and dry goods, in the back room, the team of Bookham Community Fridge volunteers and Mid Surrey Fridges CEO Clare Davies were stocking the newly relocated Community Fridge with fresh produce. Food which would usually go to waste and landfill is donated by local producers, catering companies, hospitals and supermarkets. The produce can be a whole selection of items including bread, vegetables, fruit (always including bananas!) and even some locally made jam. Surrey County Council chairman Tony Samuels, Mole Valley District Council Chairman Mary Huggins, Councillor Clare Curran, Jane Harwood cell lead for Resident Welfare and Volunteering for the Surrey Local Resilience Forum paid a visit to thank the cadets for all their hard work and to see

for themselves how the new hub was going. Gavin Stephens – Surrey Chief Constable, David Munroe – Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner also both gave their personal thanks to the young cadets for stepping up to the plate in helping their communities during their summer holidays. Surrey County Council Chairman Tony Samuels said : “I’d like to thank Mole Valley District Council for their support and cooperation in facilitating this move, as we continue to support those who are self-isolating as a result of Coronavirus. The hub once again shows partners from across the county, coming together to support local communities”. Previously the Bookham Community Fridge had operated in conjunction with The Meeting Place and anyone could pop along and collect food that would otherwise go to landfill. When Covid 19 struck and lockdown came, this was no longer possible, so the team of volunteers, under the inspirational leadership of Bookham resident Edna Woodhouse, turned the operation on its head and they now deliver food direct to doors. Bags of food go out to many families and individuals who have been affected by having to self-isolate, having reduced incomes, being made redundant and many other reasons. It is wonderful that they have saved so much food from going to landfill and used it to provide much needed supplies to local people. And by completely transforming the way they work, some weeks they have been delivering over 150 bags of food to local households. They have all done an amazing job, and worked so hard. All the volunteers giving their time and energy freely, to collect, pack and distribute the food bags to

households in Bookham, Fetcham, Effingham and Horsley. The Community Fridge has committed to operate in this way while there is a need for it, for however long that is. New households are added each week, and some households come off the delivery rounds as their circumstances change and improve. The same can be said for the volunteers. As some have now returned to their employment, so new volunteers will be needed. If you think you can help, please do get in touch with them. All help is gratefully received. As are all donations! Whilst the operating costs are kept low, there are still some overheads that need to be met. So if you can volunteer, or donate go to please visit www.themeetingplace.org.uk, call 07425 133431 or visit facebook.com/bookhamcf

And finally….STOP! Thinking of throwing that out? Don’t want that cake that you bought? Don’t need that jar of pasta sauce you haven’t opened? Bought too many bags of rice in lockdown? Why not pass your store cupboard extras to the Bookham Community Fridge? You can be sure it will be put to good use.

ŠKODA

OCTAVIA Reviewed by Ted Macauley The four-wheeled Estate car market place is awash with great deals, cars to suit every pocket and taste with economy a crucial priority. And right at the top end of all that is my unfailing choice as a bargain....the mainstay of the Skoda line-up, the fine and dandy Octavia Estate. It is the Mk 4 in the splendidly, generously spaced hatchback and estate forms and shapes, with a newly stretched length between the front and rear axles, bequeathing our deserving custom far more interior space than its predecessors. A wee bit longer too, so that it can accommodate extra safety add-ons and carefully thought out driver aids, to make it even roomier than before. Over the past decades Skoda’s clever backroom bods have carved out a distinctive niche - and the Czech firm has now set itself an enviable reputation for sensible, and the comfiest of cars that are much, much more spacious, with elbow room aplenty, especially for the driver who will genuinely feel the benefit on the longest of treks either on smooth motorways or bumpier by-passes and country lanes. Despite having the same power output as before, as lots of you will realise, the 148 bhp diesel fitted to the Octavia Estate has been throughly and heavily revised with vastly improved CO2 emission and welcome fuel economy. Performance is strong, with acceleration feeling a good deal brisker that its claimed 8.8 sec to 0-62 mph time. The engine is so versatile and responsive that you don’t have to thrash it to stir a reasonable uplift in its pace. 30 LookLocal - SEPTEMBER 2020

Take my advice: ease off the accelerator pedal now and again and our Octavia, good as gold and only too ready to please, can even “coast” along a gear to save fuel. That can tot up to around 50mpg on a mixture of roads, including plenty of motorway driving, with 60mpg possible at a steady cruise with a dainty and light touch of the right foot. You will gather this is an offering with plenty to offer. As for space? Wow! It is as roomy as can be. A six footer like me will have no trouble sitting behind the leggiest driver with inches and inches of head room to spare. It’s smartened up innards have replaced the rather dowdy interior of the older version with a range of contemporary improvements. The quality is impressive to say the least, with plenty of useful and decorative moulding around the dash and on the armrests and all the doors, with lots of chrome detailing to lend it a welcome and bright glow. The entry-level SE First Edition models come with an 8.25in infotainment touch screen, with all manner of useful driver aids and helpmates. Cleverly and thoughtfully, the screen is positioned higher in the dashboard display than previously, so you don not have to take your eyes quite so far to view it. The screen icons are large, so you can hit them relatively easily while on the move. What else? Ah yes! The boot. That is its ace card. It revels in loads of space, dwarfing its rivals...640 litres...with handy hooks, cubbies and loads of separators to keep your luggage and cargo from rolling about too much. What more can I say?

Happy Motoring!

In July, emergency services up and down the country pledged their support for the ‘ground-breaking’ technology which has been credited with saving thousands of lives across the UK with calls for the public to download the free location app – so they’re ready to give a what3words address in the event of an emergency. what3words has divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares. It has given each square a unique combination of three words - a what3words address. For example: ///tortoises.swarm.announce, will take you to a precise location on Ben Nevis where in February 2020 a group of hikers were rescued. The app is free to download for both iOS and Android and works offline – making it ideal for use in areas of the UK with an unreliable data connection. what3words can also be used via the online map at what3words.com. The technology is available in over 40 languages, including Welsh, and can be used anywhere in the world. After successfully piloting with a selection of forces in 2019, what3words is now used by over 80 per cent of UK emergency services. ‘Where’s the emergency?’ is one of the first questions asked when calling 999. But saying exactly where help is needed can be challenging. Services often can’t detect where you are automatically and dropped pins are difficult to explain over the phone. Landmark-based descriptions are prone to errors and GPS coordinates are long and difficult to communicate. At best, this is a 34 LookLocal - SEPTEMBER 2020

frustrating drain on resources. At worst, it can mean the difference between life and death. Trevor Baldwin, Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s Head of EOC Service Development, is one of the 97 UK services which use the technology for free and said many 999 callers had already used the technology to help identify their location. He added: “Having this type of technology integrated within our Emergency Operations Centre system has changed the way we are able to deal with incidents where the location isn’t known. Asking people questions about their location when they have little knowledge of an area takes time and responses aren’t always that accurate. Asking for a what3words address or sending an SMS so they can easily provide their three-word address, means that we can save valuable time locating incidents.” Data from 15 services shows the vast spectrum of cases where what3words addresses have been used, with road traffic accidents, locating vulnerable people and breathing difficulties cited for being amongst the most common reasons “A 999 call could be one of the worst times of your life. Having to provide additional directions when you’re under immense stress and the clock is ticking is something that we want everyone to avoid. You never know when an emergency might happen, but with what3words, you’ll always be able to say exactly where help is needed - quickly and easily.” Chris Sheldrick, co-founder and CEO of what3words.

The Rotary Club of Bookham & Horsley Making a Difference in the Community

Lockdown Rotary New Recruit: Eddie Crouch MBE Since writing 3 months ago, we have learnt to adapt to coping through lockdown very well. Our Virtual Zoom Meetings continue each week and are as well attended as any in the region, with 15-18 faces and wine glasses typically appearing each Wednesday evening. During our typical 75-minute call, we have been entertained by talks, music and film quizzes, and guest speakers. Two standout guest talks have been a review of the work of the Community Coronavirus Care team (and how we can help them), and highlights of a trek to the North Pole made by intrepid Bookham resident Gordon Stein (Gordon will be back with his full version with props at a live meeting next Spring). We are now actively considering the options for our meetings, activities and fund-raising events over the next year, led by incoming Club President Keith Slark from the start of July. Getting the balance right to ensure we fit withing Government guidelines AND mindful of what the local community both want and feel comfortable with is not easy. We fully intend and hope to run such staple annual Rotary events as the November Bookham Brunch and Christmas Round-The-Houses sleigh runs, albeit with modifications as necessary. Some fund-raising events this autumn, such as bridge evenings, may have to be curtailed as too high-risk. Other new outdoor events are being considered. The Club is in good health in terms of membership, with recent joiners last year now moving into more prominent team leading roles for fundraising, charity spending and media relations. We were also fortunate to welcome Steve Gapper to the Club this Spring. Steve is an experienced Rotarian and has been a member of clubs in Edinburgh and (most recently) Alresford near Winchester. Welcome Steve – you will make a great contribution! Talking of contributions, the Club was delighted to present a Lifetime Honorary Membership to Eddie 38 LookLocal - SEPTEMBER 2020

Crouch MBE. Eddie joined this Club in 1967, was Club President several times and also a past District Governor. This fantastic contribution to serving the local community has also been recognised with a letter from the global Rotary HQ near Chicago. The letter from Mark Maloney, International President, includes this paragraph: Each year since you were inducted into your club, you have chosen to devote your time, energy, and skills to our organization. You are and continue to be a member because of your passion for service, and your dedication has helped make Rotary a greater force of good in the world. Eddie, it has been our privilege to be part of Bookham & Horsley Rotary Club alongside you. If you like what you read about Rotary and would also like to make a difference, please take a look at our website and/or call us, or simply join our mailing list for occasional updates. Once normal service is resumed, you are very welcome to come along to a trial meeting.
