From the EDITOR
Welcome to Look Local in February! We are delighted to bring you our first magazine of this New Year, and wish you all the very best for a fabulous 2018! We have been making plans for the year ahead, and having recently added to our collection another magazine, The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local, there is certainly lots that needs doing around here, so our first job was to find an extra pair of hands to help out. As luck would have it, fate worked in our favour and as a result, I am delighted to welcome Michelle Hudspith to our Look Local team. I’m very sure she will be a great asset to Look Local and I am looking forward very much to working with her over the coming months. We have plenty more to share with you in this issue. You may remember that in the past we have covered the amazing work of Mr Phil Hawkins. Having been a teacher in the UK for some 20 years, he followed his heart in 2005 and took a sabbatical from his UK teaching job at the nearby Heathside School, Weybridge. Phil headed to Brazil to work; having seen how Brazil’s education system was in crisis, he wanted to help, so he set up a charity, ran workshops and guided many staff in many schools to a better way of teaching. Since then, his work and travels have taken him to many places. We hear about his latest venture which finds him in Lebanon. Along with a dear friend of mine, Rachael Underwood, they have together given hope and education to some very deserving children. It is with absolute pleasure that we present a Look Local exclusive feature, written by Phil, about the invaluable work they are undertaking. In addition to this, we hear how plans are going for a new village sign for Oxshott, and also an art exhibition that went very well from the Dib Dab Art Club. Plus news from The Leatherhead Theatre about a selection of great productions taking place there over the coming months, and of course, all our regular features too… Happy Valentine’s Day for 14th !

At this time of year, many people who’ve received puppies over the festive period ask me for tips on how best to look after them. My first comment is make sure you’re aware of the huge responsibility a dog is. As the excellent Dogs Trust slogan goes, they are for life, not just for Christmas. Aside from meeting their essential needs, such as sustenance, shelter and medical care, puppy socialisation should feature very high on the list. This is the process whereby a puppy learns life skills on how to behave and be sociable. Puppy socialisation begins from the day they are born. For the first 6-8 weeks, their mother and siblings will teach them the basics. But once they ‘leave home’ it’s very much down to you, the owner. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we take on puppies from 11 weeks old. They have their own Puppy Nursery where we guide them through their all-important early life. Mixing and interacting with other dogs of similar age is essential, but they mustn’t over-exercise, as their bodies are still developing. Providing comfy beds and quiet areas means they can rest when they need to. While they love to play, they instinctively know when they’ve had enough and need to chill out. Puppies also need more food more frequently than adult dogs. Several smaller meals a day will ensure they have all the nutrition required to develop and grow. And don’t forget lots of human interaction, as this teaches them you are leaders of their pack. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

for Oxshott Village A SIGN
CREATING OXSHOTT’S HERITAGE - WWW.OXSHOTTVILLAGESIGN.ORG
The inauguration of Cobham’s beautiful village sign on the Riverhill site in May 2017 leaves Oxshott as one of the few villages in Surrey without a traditional sign. But that’s about to change! ‘Village signs are emblems depicting the heritage, history and culture of the villages they represent’, according to the Village Sign Society. Such signs also act as a focus for the community, provide a sense of identity and instil civic pride, all important values when our local villages are under threat from Green Belt development. Originally, ornamental timber and iron signs were commonly used to identify buildings of importance, such as inns or town halls. However, the modern tradition of village signs is believed to have started in Norfolk in the early 20th century, and gradually their use spread across East Anglia and beyond. What will appear on the Oxshott sign? Unlike Cobham, Oxshott is a relatively new village. Historically, it was part of the parish of Stoke d’Abernon and didn’t even get its own church until 1912. A number of possible creative approaches have been identified, including the coming of the railway, the heath, the brickworks and the pottery. A design brief has been circulated and has already been received with great enthusiasm by the Oxshott Arts & Crafts Society and both Royal Kent and Danes Hill pupils. We look forward to seeing the fruits of their
20 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018
labours! Don’t forget, the final closing date for designs is 13th April 2018. Where will our sign be erected? A number of sites in the centre of the village have been identified and the ownership of most of these is, fortunately, Surrey County Council. Ideally, a village sign should be located in an open area away from buildings, trees and other signage, and should be viewed against a sky background. Not always possible, even in rural areas! How will it be funded? We have already received pledges from a number of villagers, and applications for donations and grants have been made to FEDORA, Oxshott Village Day and Elmbridge Borough Council. The short-listed designs will be shared with the wider community at the Oxshott Arts & Crafts Society Spring Exhibition on 5th, 6th and 7th May 2018 in the Village Centre. Once the judging panel has selected a final design, we hope that everyone – businesses, organisations and villagers - will want to proudly support their very own sign by donating to the fund. If you feel inspired to help create a village sign for Oxshott, if you want to pledge a donation or if you simply want to find out more about the project, please visit our website to get all the detailed information – www.oxshottvillagesign.com

build refugee pre-school LOCAL RESIDENTS
MOUNTAINS OF LEBANON NOW HAS A BRAND NEW PRE-SCHOOL, GIVING QUALITY CARE TO 40 SYRIAN REFUGEE CHILDREN. High in the mountains of Lebanon, a local pastor was caring for a vulnerable and needy community. He had already opened a monthly health clinic staffed by volunteer doctors and nurses, where patients would often walk for 3 hours to wait in line to be seen. The area had experienced an increase in Syrian refugees and the community was anxious about local services. Education, or lack of it, was a major concern. One day, a Syrian family approached the pastor. They had 5 young children but no school. They were desperate to see their family receive an education. “Would you open a school in your home?” they asked. Their children had never been to school. The pastor and his wife prayed about it and opened up their home, using the resources they had, with a team of volunteers who were not trained teachers. They were trying their best in a tough
environment and wanted help to set up the school. Phil Hawkins and family returned in 2016 after a six-year stay in Brazil with Aprender, Bookham’s very own international education charity. Working with a local Brazilian education institute, Phil and local colleague Josebene constructed a new, innovative school improvement model that focuses on development of character strengths and relevant knowledge. Its aim is to help education organisations in developing countries give children an extra boost to their studies. Following successful results, the work branched out into Lebanon, aiding schools for refugees. Could their Latin American experience of cross-cultural education development help in this new context? Rachael Underwood, Aprender’s Early Years Consultant, and Phil Hawkins visited the school
in the Lebanese mountains in May 2017 and were struck by the potential they saw. The building had a good space, a great outdoor area, and, most importantly, folk that had a willingness to grab opportunities to reach their community and learn. The pastor explained the need and his dream to open a pre-school serving Syrian refugees. Rachael and Phil met on their return to the UK to dream and plan. Could they involve a local pre-school from Bookham? They approached Rainbow Play Group who kindly agreed to partner with them and they were soon in, filming the wonderful learning environment and lots of adult-child interactions which they could use in their training materials. They began to construct a new training sequence to help create not just a normal pre-school, but one that would be high quality, and specifically benefit the large numbers of traumatised children in the neighbourhood. As they talked, they felt a clear sense that not only did it need to be great, but it had to be replicable. Could they get across the essential early years DNA in a way that the local educators owned, valued and felt empowered to teach others? Through careful liaison with the pastor and the pre-school director, Rachael proposed three lots of three-day training across a 6 month period with evaluation and support as a foundational promise. As plans gathered pace, local friends and supporters came on-board and soon they had a bunch of folk helping and giving, as they felt the immense importance of what was about to happen. Rachael and Phil headed back to the mountains in Lebanon in November 2017 with suitcases filled with a huge variety of very simple learning support materials. Rachael led the training from Monday to Wednesday, and the team of teachers wrestled with how they were going to make this work in their culture. Because of a solid relational and crosscultural understanding, the team not only wanted to follow the proposed model but understood the ‘why’ - so important for sustainability. Phil said, “It was such an honour and privilege to see the new pre-
school open on the Thursday for 40 refugee children from ages 3 to 5. Seeing the team put into practice ideas that had only been explained 24 hours previously was simply amazing.” Rachael said, “It was really exciting seeing the children arriving and then seeing everyone so engaged and absorbed in what they were doing.” It was such a team effort. Aprender are so grateful for the support, practically and financially, that they received leading up to the trip. Bookham Baptist Church has been a key supporter for the last 7 years and continues to provide resources and prayer that are so welcome. Various groups that meet up in Bookham also made items to send and gave financially too. The ‘Babes on the Run’ fitness group had a pre-Christmas Family Charity Bootcamp on 23rd December, raising funds for Aprender and this pre-school project. Thanks, Kim and the team and everyone that came, burnt calories and had fun! Since returning to the UK, Rachael and Phil have become members of the pre-school’s WhatsApp group and are amazed to see the photos and videos that have been posted showing the transformation happening with the children and volunteers. Aprender continue to support and empower as we conduct the second training event in January 2018, evaluating what has been working and growing understanding of how we can improve. With a great team of volunteers on the ground, we are confident that the new pre-school will go from strength to strength. January is the time of thick snow in the mountains and few venture outside to play. Our hope is that we can help provide some new outdoor play equipment in time for the spring when the snow has gone and the children can play and explore their new emerging world. If you would like to know more or support this on-going partnership and donate to fund training and equipment, please visit Aprender’s website at www.aprender.co.uk and click the ‘Make A Donation’ button. You can also follow Aprender on Facebook and Twitter at aprenderuk. We would love to show Cobham the results of its generosity, following our third visit in April 2018. By Phil Hawkins

Local Girl.. Abi Bruce
U 1 8 GB R A L P I N E S K I R AC E R Local teenager Abi Bruce, (from Fetcham) is an U18 GBR Alpine Ski Racer. I am delighted to share here an account of her recent achievements. Abi attends St Johns School in Leatherhead when she is not winning medals on the slops … 18 Nov 17 NZ to Austria (and all in between) ‘I was so happy to be back out in Austria and racing again, scoring new Personal Bests in both GS and Slalom in her first FIS races of the Winter Season. It’s not been an easy path to get back and I am extremely grateful to my parents and coaches for supporting me along the way. After ending my first season in the Junior Category in Tignes in March with 5 British Championship Titles and also winning both the British National U18 Overall and British Junior (U21) Overall titles, I was absolutely shattered and needed to get back home and let it all sink in.
30 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018
The step up from Children’s racing to Junior is big but I loved being able to compete against all nationalities and travel to many different races during the year. Keeping on top of schoolwork hasn’t been easy for me and when I got home I realised just how much catching up I had to do. Spending the summer term at my school was great, especially seeing all my school friends again. In early July I headed out to the indoor slope facility in Wittenberg, Germany for some training prior to the team heading down to New Zealand again for more summer training and races. It was an intense but overall successful few weeks just marred by the cancellation of the super G ANC races at the end of the camp. I was skiing well and feeling good. Coming back to the UK, I was straight back to school for my final year of A levels and it was important that I focus on getting as much work done as I could prior to the ski season starting again. I was pleased with how
things were going and headed out for October training in Austria feeling positive, however, within a couple of days I felt awful, just really tired, achy, sore throat and generally not great. Marc and my parents agreed that I needed to get back home and rest. I was worried that I would be missing training but I knew I had no choice but to get better before the season started. So, I slept, and slept and slept! I saw my friends, went to the Daily Telegraph Ski Show and was also able to attend a Nutrition for Sporting Performance presentation evening organised by the Surrey Elite Athlete scheme. On 10 November I headed back out to Austria knowing I was going to have just a few days training before the European races started in earnest. The first GS FIS race took place in Solda, Italy on a steep icy pitch and I was pretty happy to score a PB and get a good result so quickly. My first slalom race on the flatter CIT race piste also saw me put in a new PB.
I’m so glad I was able to take a short break and come back fresh and ready to go. Next stop Norway! 23 December – First International Podium Absolutely stoked to make my first international podium in Dienten, Austria, with a 2nd place finish. Scoring 46.26 points and making qualification criteria for World Junior Championships was such a good feeling. Unfortunately the next day I crashed out and landed on my shoulder - luckily not too bad but enough to rule me out of the slalom races in Leogang for the next 2 days. The Christmas break gave me a chance to rest and recover - with a bit of physio to aid the process. I’m not back out in Austria and ready to go again.’ Wow what an amazing year Abi has had. We wish her all the best this season and I hope to update you again in the future. Go Abi! www.abibruce.co.uk

Dib Dab Art Club ART EXHIBITION
For more information, check out www.dibdabartclub.com
Local children’s art club Dib Dab hosted their first art exhibition at Brouge Esher just before Christmas. Jo says ‘We wanted to celebrate the wonderful work all the children produce at our after-school and lunch clubs. “ If children belong to sports clubs or drama clubs, there is always an opportunity to shine, whether that’s competing in a sports match or performing on stage,. With art, there are fewer opportunities. We wanted to create an art exhibition where children could feel proud to see their work hanging in a public space and enjoy the feeling of showing off their work to friends and family.’ Dib Dab was lucky enough to be offered space by the new Belgian restaurant Brouge in Esher.
|
Dibdabartclub@gmail.com
“We put out a request for exhibition space on social media and were delighted when Brouge offered us the chance to talk more. We also discussed a private view where parents and teachers could spend one evening with the children, looking at their work and enjoying a glass of bubbles and nibbles. Brouge was happy to help us create a wonderful sociable event for the community.” The feedback from everyone, especially the children, was so positive Dib Dab is sure they need to make art ” now exhibitions a regular part of the club. For more information on Dib Dabs art classes and Easter workshops, please visit dibdabartclub.com or facebook.com/dibdabartclub
We were overwhelmed with the support from parents and the private view was a huge success. It was wonderful for us to see the children proudly showing off their work and their huge smiles when they saw their work framed and named hanging on the wall

Gardening matters GROWING SOFT FRUIT
CECELIA JOHN 01372 200 000 OR ROS@LOOKLOCALMAGAZINE.CO.UK
And here we are in a new year. Again. Amazing, it happens every year. OK, enough of the levity, let’s have a look at growing soft fruit. Fruit bushes love the sun and ideally should be planted in an open space. Planting a few fruit bushes will ensure you always have delicious pickings, but if your outdoor space is small or limited, you can also grow them in containers or pots (as long as the pots are 45cm in diameter); some bushes, such as gooseberries, can even grow against a wall. The best time to plant fruit bushes is November to February, and the good news is that planting them doesn’t take too long. Simply soak the roots in a bucket of water for about thirty minutes, and when you’re ready to plant the bush, dig a hole big enough to allow space for the roots and some manure/compost, but not deeper than the original soil depth when you bought the bush. Tease out the roots, put the plant in the hole, firm the earth around it, water it and sprinkle mulch around the base. Ta daaaaa. Birds also love the fruit that appears on trees and bushes in summer and autumn. Protecting your fruit bushes, therefore, is really important, and a fruit cage is often the best answer. You can buy them ready-made, but cages are really quite easy to make: just measure your area, build a frame with tanalised timber and cover it
36 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018
with wire mesh or netting. If you grow fruit bushes in containers or pots, don’t forget to protect them with netting too. Apart from the birds, normal plant care is important, so you should still weed, water and add mulch, and to continue getting good fruit, prune them every year in late winter and early spring. With most fruit bushes, prune all the shoots right back to encourage new growth, and by summer, the bushes will have formed plenty of new shoots. Raspberries are different. For summer-fruiting raspberries, cut all fruiting shoots once the fruit’s finished, but with autumn-fruiting raspberries, you’ll need to cut the canes down to ground level in February. Cut out dead or diseased stems of gooseberries in winter, and also any that are crossing over, cutting them back with secateurs to a young shoot. It’s also a good idea to cut back new growth by half. Blackcurrant bushes are planted deep, and each year they produce new shoots from below ground. Prune older branches after you’ve picked the blackcurrants, and every year, remove a third of any old stems with black bark by cutting them down to ground level or to a strong new shoot. Summer and early autumn are when fruit bushes typically ripen, so get to them before the birds – or the squirrels in my case – beat you to it.

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.
This is a rapidly emerging matter, and at the time of writing - 12 Jan 2018 - this is the current situation. Due to the nature of this issue, the advice may change. There have been two different security exploits (or weaknesses) discovered which are affecting most processors used for PCs, laptops, Macs, smartphones, tablets, iPads and iPhones manufactured since 1995 to now. The processor is the very heart of your device, it controls almost every function on the device. It has been found that the microcode that manages the processor has vulnerabilities, meaning there is a possibility that an unknown party could access your computer without your knowledge. There is no evidence that this has ever happened, but the fact that it exists is concern enough. Because the processor and its microcode are a sealed unit, the manufacturers cannot re-engineer the processor, so the resolution is to update the device operating software to ensure protection. It is important to ensure your device has the latest operating system patches installed. Windows 10 has already had the patches applied, so if you have automatic updates enabled you are protected; Windows 7 and 8 updates are due by the end of January 2018. Apple computers require MacOS 10.13.2 or above, Apple phones and tablets require IOS11.2 or above and
40 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018
Apple TVOS 11.2 are all patched, but you may need to apply these updates manually. Android devices were patched in December 17 and January 18, so should be protected if kept up to date. If you have a reputable internet security program, this has probably already been patched to secure your device. Because your device is now doing a bit more “processing” or work, it may not respond as quickly as it once did, but this performance drop is said to be between 2-9%, as most devices have this capacity spare - this shouldn’t really be noticeable. If you are concerned that your devices performance has declined too much, please get in contact with us, as there is a good chance we can offer a resolution to the problem We have experienced some updates and patches causing a significant performance drop, but these patches have been withdrawn and reissued. This is a developing matter, and as we find out more, we are very happy to share it with you. If you would like to be kept up to date, please email us at sales@tecres.co.uk, requesting to be updated. This information is for your guidance and is not intended to panic you. There is minimal likelihood you are at risk. I am sure the telephone scammers will be calling soon about this matter, please do not fall foul. Our best advice is to tell the scammers you do not have broadband or a computer.

Book Reviews FEBRUARY ISSUE
“BOOKS ARE UNIQUELY PORTABLE MAGIC” - STEPHEN KING
The Late Show by Michael Connelly (Paperback £7.99) Michael Connelly’s new detective, Renee Ballard, more than lives up to the Bosch character from his previous novels. Renee is a homicide detective who was rising through the ranks before being relegated to the night shift. This followed the dismissal of a sexual harassment complaint against her boss. She is tasked with covering the 11pm7am shift which normally leaves her in limbo, unable to follow through on the cases she catches in the “late show”. The story follows Renee’s fast-paced and unrelenting pursuit of three cases which come her way in one shift. She believes she cannot allow the usual procedures to prevent her from working these crimes and bringing them to a successful closure. Battling opposition in her working life and inner turmoil in her private life, Renee is a complex character about whom I look forward to learning more! Eighteen Below by Stefan Ahnhem (Hardback £18.99) The third outing for Fabian Risk now working in Malmo and former Copenhagen detective Jurja Hougaard, now demoted (unjustly of course!) to patrol officer in Helsingor. In a crowded field, I found these books stood out. They’re exciting page turners but the most interesting threads are the interaction between the various characters and the antagonism between the Swedish and Danish police. Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body by Sara Pascoe (Paperback £8.99) Pascoe’s exploration of the science of female bodies is fascinating, relatable and funny. Pascoe’s humour is a great foil to the topic of negative body image, making this a wonderful book for teenagers and any adult (female or male) who doesn’t fully appreciate their “clever old fat”. When informed about how female bodies have evolved and how attitudes towards them have changed, our most punishing cultural norms are seen for what they are: laughably stupid and regrettably influential. A great read for all human animals.

Theatre returns PROFESSIONAL REPERTORY
TO LEATHERHEAD - WWW.LEATHERHEADTHEATRE,COM/LEATHERHEADREPSEASON
Seasonal rep will return to The Leatherhead Theatre after almost 30 years, with a series of three plays presented by professional theatre company Hordern Ciani. This exciting new initiative will be brought to the area by the team behind the hugely successful Swanage Rep. The brand new season for the community of Leatherhead and surrounding areas will see the company of nine actors perform across all three shows, rehearsing one play during the day whilst performing another at night. The Leatherhead season will feature ‘Yes, Prime Minister’, the stage version of the smash hit TV series by the original writers Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, ‘The Secret Garden’, a brand new musical adaptation by Dave Simpson based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and ‘Communicating Doors’ by hugely popular playwright Alan Ayckbourn. The Leatherhead Theatre is a 500 seater, Grade II listed building which originally opened as The Thorndike, a purpose-built rep theatre in 1969, named after Dame Sybil Thorndike. However, the last professional
repertory season to play there was in the late 1980s. Katherine Mount, Producer and co-founder of Leatherhead Rep said: “We are so excited to be bringing our rep season to this beautiful theatre, and feel extremely privileged to be working in a facility that was designed for, and was home to repertory theatre for so long. Regional theatres often overlook ‘traditional plays’ in their programming and we feel lucky to have been welcomed here with such open arms, and to be able to restore this wonderful tradition to the local community of Leatherhead. We hope everyone will come out in support of this and enable the theatre to thrive once again” Tickets for all three shows in the Spring rep season can be purchased from The Leatherhead Theatre box office on 01372 365141 or via their website w w w. t h e l e a t h e r h e a d t h e a t re . c o m / leatherheadrepseason. The season opens on Tuesday 17th of April 2018 and closes on the 5th of May 2018.

raises charity funds GARSONS
GARSONS, WINTERDOWN RD, WEST END ESHER KT10 8LS - WWW.GARSONS.CO.UK
Award-winning garden centre and farm shop Garsons of Esher has raised a staggering £4,650 for their charity of the year for 2017, Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust. Money has mounted up thanks to charity boxes at the tills, collections which took place at Garsons’ Christmas food market and late night shopping events, and donations at children’s half term craft events in May and October. A pair of real reindeer even lent a hoof to the fundraising. When these beautiful animals took up residence at Garsons in the run-up to Christmas, shoppers were able to visit them for free, but were encouraged to give any spare change into collection buckets in the reindeer enclosure. Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust was set up in memory of local schoolboy, Fabian Bate, who sadly passed away in November 2014 from relapsed childhood leukaemia at the age of 12. He had a strong connection with Garsons as he was a keen gardener and loved to spend time in their pick-your-own (PYO) fields. Last summer, the family-run business even named one of its PYO fields in his memory. “A big thank you to the team at Garsons for supporting and motivating us towards our goals. It has given us a huge boost. Their support has enabled us to see that our work could help more children find a long-term cure for
52 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018
leukaemia,” says Fabian’s mum, Lydia, who founded the organisation with her father, Frank Watson. “And it has meant so much to our family to know that Fabian will be remembered always by having a field named after him.” Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust supports families who have a child diagnosed with cancer, and aims to provide around 200 overnight and `treat’ bags a year for parents staying on the wards of the children’s cancer unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital. It also raises vital funds for research into relapsed childhood leukaemia and has supplied much-needed centrifuge testing equipment to help with this research. With help from Garsons, the charity which started at the end of 2014 is now hoping to sponsor a Masters student to carry out drug research. “It has been a privilege to support this wonderful charity which makes a real difference to local families and we are extremely grateful to our customers who have been so generous and helped us achieve this amazing total,” says director of Garsons, Ben Thompson. Garsons, which has been at the heart of the community for almost 150 years, supports a different charity every year. Beyound the dragon POLESDEN LACEY
EXHIBITION AT POLESDEN LACEY
When Margaret Greville passed away in 1942, she left not only Polesden Lacey to the National Trust, but also her London home, as well as their contents. A collection of over 9,000 items is now housed at Polesden Lacey. Polesden Lacey’s new exhibition, Beyond the Dragon, will throw a spotlight on 25 of the vivid Asian pieces in the collection, from books to ceramics to furniture. Experiences and Conservation Manager Jonathan Marsh chose the pieces in conjunction with the National Trust’s ceramic advisor and Polesden Lacey’s curator. ‘We were very spoilt for choice, as there are 180 pieces of Asian art in our collection,’ says Jonathan. ‘We chose the pieces that are being featured, as they show a range of materials and designs, as well as the wonderfully vibrant colours associated with this incredible continent.’ Beyond the Dragon: Maggie’s Asian Treasures runs from 2 February – 3 May 2018. The following is a preview of some of the pieces that will feature in this vivid exhibition. Dogs of Fo These ‘dogs’ are actually Chinese dragons, said to guard against evil spirits and demons. Dogs of Fo are popular
in Chinese and Buddhist art, and this particular dog is only one of the 18 in Polesden Lacey’s collection. Japanese art books These books are somewhat mysterious, as not much is yet known about them, apart from the fact that they probably date from the nineteenth century. They are incredibly delicate and feature stunning and rich prints on linen pages. The exhibition marks the very first time these books will be on display to the public. Porcelain cricket cage incense burner This unusual ornament was made in Hizen, Japan and features gourds hanging on a beehive shaped arbour. It was given to Maggie by Queen Mary as a Christmas gift in 1920, along with a note that said ‘this may amuse you!’ Alongside the exhibition, other Asian pieces from Polesden Lacey’s collection will also be highlighted throughout the house, including colourful porcelain figures and furniture. Beyond the Dragon is running from 2 February – 3 May as part of Polesden Lacey’s Adventures in Asia programme, exploring Maggie’s travels around the continent.

Car review MERCEDES S63 L AMG
FEBRUARY REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
Excitement comes in various degrees, and it is almost impossible to rate and compare its content when it has been so gloriously plentiful for me over decades of privileged assignments in my job as a journalist. So, hopefully without being accused of being a namedropping egomaniac, I would like to pinpoint a few examples of my own experience, such as a series of one-to-one lunches with Hollywood megastar Paul Newman, six weeks on tour with The Beatles, a holiday with football genius George Best in Dubai, a week with Grand Prix hero Nigel Mansell and film star Gene Hackman in Arizona and a trip, first class, to Australia with my best pal, motor bike race genius Mike Hailwood. Add to them a flight on Concorde from Paris to New York, a trip to the USA on board Queen Mary 2 with an invitation by skipper Kevin Oprey to the Captain’s table for dinner, and sheer joy is an overtaking factor. And just when one could be thinking none of this could
56 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018
be matched, another treat to thrill blazes a trail across the imagination, and the build-up and anticipation invade your psyche with stark expectation. This time, a dream of a supercar, the finest example of elegance, poise, romance and sheer style, a Mercedes masterpiece, was centrepiece of an unforgettably luxurious stopover at the ultra-splendid Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni overlooking Lake Como and the spectacular mountain backdrop opposite it on the edge of the village of Bellagio. It was an invitation to celebrate at the scene of my marriage to Trophy Wife, with, firstly, a private jet to Nice where we were airlifted by helicopter onto the shipboard pad of our host’s yacht standing off Monaco. And to add to his surprise anniversary treat for us, he had laid on the loan of a superbly classy Mercedes S-Class, so I could mix the business of a review with the pleasure of a weekend at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and a lunch with F1 champ, Lewis Hamilton.
The coastline drive along the Riviera is a constant awakener, with its breathtaking views and the eventual winding, treacherously narrow road to the ltalian lakeside, with an ever-present threat of cars heading in the opposite direction and riskily cutting the corners. To do it in the likes of the S-Class, marvellously safe, with its sublime ride and reactive performance levels on both the brake and the accelerator pedals, plus the formidable solid size of the handsome Merc, largely removes any fears of coming off second-best in a wallop. The range-topper, the sixth generation of the S-Class, is the result of painstaking and astute planning by the brainy design boys, giving it a crucial mix of practicality and plushness par excellence to overshadow and cause anxiety among its rivals, such as the Cadillac CT6, Maserati Quattro Porto, BMW 7 and Lexus and Volvo in the exclusive luxury saloon class. Even the best Rolls Royces need to be wary… Since it became the first car in Europe to incorporate airbags and three-point seat belts, it has never paused in its pursuit of top rankings. There are even 64…yes sixty-four… colour settings for a sumptuous cabin with top hotel penthouse atmosphere. The extensively
spacious rear seats with leg room to rival any first-class jet plane, massage, warm and ventilate, with a relaxing recline halfway to horizontal. Loads of aluminium has been used to save weight and boost performance. Adaptive dampers tighten the suspension when necessary and there’s a system which sniffs out bumps and sets up the suspension automatically so that you don’t feel them. I could go on and on because the car’s infrastructure is a work of art and common sense in equal and vastly extensive measure. My Monaco-Milan venture in this dream transport for Trophy Wife and me will be a permanent reminder that Mercedes can never, ever be underestimated when the crucial element in style and efficiency in motion is a guarantee. I make no apologies f I appear to have gone over the top in what could be judged as an appraisal to stir the emotions of all of us car lovers. If I had a hundred grand or so to spare, a 2018 S-type would be my treat to myself. Specification: Model S63 L AMG. BHP 612. MPG 32. 0-62 in 4.3 seconds. Top speed 155mph. Price £125,690.
xŇÜƍƬƈŔƢĴƍ Ǝƛčƚƌ ɵ Ȥ ÷ƀŇƒ ƨƟ ÜìƓƈƨƧ Transition Cobham is this year celebrating 5 years of action. From its foundation it has been prominent in looking at environmental matters including how local transport works in the Cobham area (in use of public transport rather than cars and reducing the number of HGVs), air quality (particularly arising from development such as at Heathrow), community gardening, litter picking, keeping at bay invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam and fostering walking in the local area. On the way, some years ago we helped highlight the overuse of plastic bags and it does look as if the world’s plastic problem will be increasingly recognised in 2018. As part of that we will, among other aspects, be drawing attention to the need for a levy on plastic coffee cups to ensure that they become recyclable. There will be a number of events during the Spring which will be found on our website. If you would like to join us. visit www.transitioncobham.org.uk for more information
