DIGIDOC COBHAM FOOTPATH WHAT’S COOKING? COBHAM HERITAGE DAY OXSHOTT VILLAGE DAY GARDENING MATTERS WHAT’S ON IN OCTOBER FIREWORK DISPLAYS CROSSWORD PUZZLE SUDOKU & DIGI-SEARCH COBHAM BOOKSHOP REVIEWS ST ANDREW’S NEW VICAR USEFUL NUMBERS CHURCH SERVICES PUZZLE SOLUTIONS ADVERTISERS’ INDEX

The vibrant autumn colours seem to have arrived a little earlier than normal this year, maybe that’s been caused by the scorching summer? Anyway, it’s looking very pretty around the villages and the conkers will soon be falling. Let’s enjoy the last few weeks of lighter evenings, before the time change slips us into early darkness…. (Clocks go back on Sunday 28th October) I hope you enjoy our coverage of the recent Cobham Heritage Day. Do turn to our centre pages for a colourful reminder of this wonderful day... We also share news from Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust regarding their footpaths project; you will soon be able to enjoy some lovely new & improved walking routes in and around Cobham. What a great job CCHT do for us all! Also included, a fair-well message from Carmen Robinson, who founded the Oxshott Village Day back in 2007/8; Carmen has done an amazing job over the past 11 years, and it is such a shame that no-one has, as yet, come forward to take over where she has left off… Are you feeling lucky? Well we have two great competitions this month; firstly the chance to win a family ticket to attend ‘The Railway Children’ at The Leatherhead Theatre as part of their upcoming Leatherhead Rep Season. See page 24 for that. Our second prize, comes in the form of a great little book for motorbike racing enthusiasts! Written by our very own Look Local motor-head, Ted Macauley (who kindly writes our much enjoyed car review each month) about legendary Mike ‘The Bike’ Hailwood’s return to the TT. Read our review and see details of how to win on page 52. Good luck to all who enter. All this and lots more within, I hope you enjoy our October issue. Until next time, do take care,

Ros

“It’s important not to be passive when it comes to protecting young people online. They can be exposed to so much on the internet and ignorance is no excuse for losing your child’s innocence.”

If you’re like most people, you just want to get on with opening the webpage and click “OK”. However, there is that nagging feeling that you probably really ought to click “Cookie Settings” to ensure you are not exposing yourself to something that a fiendish cookie baker may be plotting.

There was a case recently where a person had an email back from friend asking why they had received an email with a transcript of a discussion concerning them. It took a while to work out that the smart speaker in the room had interpreted part of the conversation as an email command and emailed the rest of the conversation to the person mentioned!

In reality, cookies are just short bits of text stored by your browser. These can be used in powerful ways to track your actions and build an understanding of your personal habits and tastes. By tracking these, companies can make a lot of money selling on your information to others. Our real lives are becoming ever more exposed because we live our digital lives in blissful ignorance but like physical health, our digital health needs care and attention. “When my children were at primary school I realised that, whilst I could trust my kids online, it was when their friends came over that lots of ‘interesting’ websites were being visited.” says Craig Martin, an IT specialist who provides personalised advice and training on how to protect yourself and your family from digital threats.

20 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018

As these and other stories about digital identity theft or online bullying are surfacing regularly, most of us are becoming aware that our digital lives are exposing our real lives. Unfortunately, we’re rather poorly equipped to protect ourselves and every year it’s happening to more and more people. If you are concerned about the safety of your online identity, or keeping your children safe online, try ‘Get Safe Online’ at https://www. getsafeonline.org. Alternatively, visit www.DigiDoc.Pro or call Craig on 0203 239 5256 to set up a professional consultation session on how to protect yourself and your family online.

FOOTPATH IMPROVEMENTS IN THE COBHAM AREA Sue Prentice (on behalf of Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust)

Walkers and pedestrians in and around Cobham will soon benefit from some new and improved footpaths as a result of fantastic collaboration and joint working between Elmbridge Borough Council, Surrey County Council and Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust (CCHT). CCHT identified and prioritised 3 footpaths in the Cobham, Stoke d’Abernon and Downside area that were in dire need of attention and improvement. With support from our local Elmbridge Councillors and our Surrey County Councillor, the Heritage Trust successfully submitted an application to Elmbridge Council earlier in the year for Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding. CIL money comes

22 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018

largely from Developers who have to pay the Council a percentage of the development costs - a proportion of CIL funds as the name suggests can be used for local community infrastructure projects. CCHT have a track record of utilising CIL funds as they successfully applied and were awarded money in previous years to upgrade a number of local footpaths, one being the resurfacing of the footpath running along the River Mole as it curves into Cobham. So the CCHT team were keen to use this source of funding again to benefit the local community. The Trust will also contribute 15% of the costs of the 3 projects.

The 3 projects that CCHT identified and prioritised are: 1. Improvements to the footpath that runs up the side of Knowle Hill Park field, running parallel and behind Lodge Close. This rural footpath has suffered from a lack of maintenance and attention and has become very overgrown in the spring and summer, and virtually impassable in the winter due to the muddy nature that results in very challenging walking conditions. The path will be resurfaced with a loose stone material in keeping with its rural nature. This will allow local residents to use the path in all weathers and walk at least two abreast! Surrey County Council are responsible for this footpath, so took responsibility for the specification and appointment of contractors and have done a great job in managing the project. They will also be upgrading (at their expense) the stile at the top of the path to a kissing gate and will be installing an additional gate at the bottom of the path to allow easier disabled access. It should be noted that cyclists are not permitted to use the footpath (though we are aware some do) and new signage will be put up to help to deter usage. The work on this footpath started in early August and was completed in early September (some pictures of the work underway attached) 2. A new footpath at the bottom of Leigh Hill Road,

which will avoid pedestrians having to walk on the road and particularly benefit the elderly, parents with pushchairs and people with disabilities. The path will follow the natural line through Leigh Hill Common from the existing path outside Leigh Corner up to the track just past Leigh Place, and will provide an attractive path through a recently restored area of common. Elmbridge Council will be responsible for this footpath and we anticipate the work will be carried out in the early autumn 3. A new all-weather path alongside Downside Common. This will enable all-year access for residents, local horse-riders, walkers and cyclists by the upgrading of a path that runs along the north side of the common, and extending this to the play area and the Cricketers Pub. There is currently an unsurfaced Permissive Horse Ride across part of this side of the common that can be used during the summer months, but the boggy and marshy clay soil of the common means that access (without wellington boots) is effectively cut off to this part of the common and the play equipment during the winter months and after heavy rain. Elmbridge Council will be responsible for this work and have already started clearing the vegetation at the time of going to press - we anticipate that this will be undertaken by the end of October.

Leatherhead Theatre Competition Hidden behind a Leatherhead street-front is one of the best theatres of the 1960s. Access from the street is by way of a short corridor. A feature of the theatre is that all the foyer areas and the auditorium are accessible to wheelchairs. Standard now, this level of consideration of the disabled was outstanding when it opened in 1969, and won the building a new disability award in 1971. On the ground floor is the coffee bar. There is also a licensed bar open during evening performances and an area used as an art gallery and available to hire for exhibitions. As with many 1960s British theatres the auditorium seats are all on one steeply raked tier; unusually they are undivided by aisles, keeping the audience as a single unit. The auditorium is remarkably unaltered, with its original decor and its brick-tile walls with four expressive lighting slits curving out. Because of its thoughtful design and its relatively small number of seats, The Theatre is one of the most intimate and architecturally accomplished proscenium theatres of British modernism. t u rkey a n d gu a ca mo l e b u rg e r s Ingredients Method

500g pack turkey thigh mince Good few dashes Tabasco sauce 1 red onion, ½ coarsely grated and ½ diced 1 lime, zest and juice 28g pack coriander, leaves and stalks separated, stalks finely chopped, leaves chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed or finely grated 1 Waitrose 1 Perfectly Ripe Large Avocado 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 1 tbsp olive oil 4 monterey jack cheese slices 4 wholemeal or ciabatta rolls, halved and griddled or toasteds

1. Tip the turkey mince into a bowl and season. Add the Tabasco sauce, coarsely grated ½ onion, lime zest, coriander stalks and 1½ crushed or grated garlic cloves. Mix to combine, then shape into 4 patties, about 1cm thick. Put on a plate; set aside in the fridge. 2. Meanwhile, in a bowl, roughly mash the avocado with a fork and season. Stir in the remaining garlic, the juice of ½ lime and most of the coriander leaves; set aside. In another bowl, toss the pepper with the diced ½ onion and remaining juice of ½ lime; season and set aside. 3. Coat the burgers with a little oil. Fry in a hot frying pan (or on a griddle or barbecue) for 5 minutes. Flip and cook for 2 minutes, then top each with a cheese slice. Cook for 3 minutes more, until no pink meat remains and the juices run clear. Pile into the rolls with the guacamole, pepper mixture and remaining coriander.

Cook’s Tip Coarsely grating the onion is an easy way to incorporate it into the burger mixture without needing to chop it finely.

obham eritage Day 2018

GOODBYE OXSHOTT VILLAGE DAY

All good things must come to an end, and after 11 years it is now time to say goodbye to Oxshott Village Day. The Village Day started in 2008. Two years previously, I had resigned from being Chairman of Oxshott Christmas Fair, after running it for 4 years, and decided to start a new annual event that residents could enjoy and that local clubs, societies and businesses could benefit from. The first Village Day was planned during 2007 and held in 2008 at Oxshott Village Sports Club. I received seed funding from FEDORA, without which I could not have started, and several local businesses supported me with generous sponsorship. In the beginning, we had several years of mediocre weather and resulting weak finances. The weather has always been a risk, and even this year at the beginning of May, we almost decided to cancel because of the heavy spring rains and the soft sports grounds. After the poor weather of the first few years, we had several years with excellent sunny weather; the people came and the event grew and we were eventually hosting an estimated 5,500 visitors. The team did a fantastic job in making OVD a great day for all the family. For us, the real reward was in seeing families

picnicking on the grass in the sunshine, watching the entertainments or listening to the jazz band, and everyone having a good time. Oxshott Village Day is expensive to run; fortunately, we were sponsored by local businesses and schools, some of which supported us every year from the beginning. We are incredibly grateful to them for their support. Each year excess funds were donated to local charities, as can be seen on our website (www.oxshottvillageday. com). By the time we finish we will have donated over £36,000 to local charities. OVD also purchases the Christmas Tree for Oxshott High Street and will do so again this year. It has been a great pleasure to be the founder of Oxshott Village Day and bring so much enjoyment to residents of Oxshott. We are very grateful to Oxshott Village Sports Club for the use of their grounds and Club House each year and we hope that they, or someone else, will continue with this wonderful event which is now so well recognised as a part of Oxshott’s annual calendar. GARDENING MATTERS HOW TO CREATE A WILDFLOWER MEADOW

Wildflower meadows grow best on open land which gets plenty of sunlight, unshaded by trees/shrubs/walls. Also, they should be somewhere undisturbed by people/pets: few meadow plants will survive frequent trampling. There are two different types of meadow, and it really comes down to the type of soil in which you intend to plant. Perennial meadows grow best in poorer soil. If you want to grow them in fertile soil, remove the top 15-20cm to expose the nutrient-poor subsoil in which to plant your seeds. Find an area in your garden which hasn’t been treated with fertilisers recently too, since low fertility is key for many typical meadow flowers and grasses. Annual meadows need good quality, nutrient-rich soil, ideal if you plan on planting your wildflowers in a part of your garden where you’ve previously grown plants, eg an existing flower bed/border. For both, avoid areas with large numbers of established perennial weeds, eg nettles/ docks/thistles. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, prepare the ground about a month before sowing to encourage weed seeds in the soil to germinate, giving you time to remove them before planting your wildflower seeds. Break up the soil with a fork, and rake the site to produce a reasonably fine, firm layer, removing any larger stones/root fragments. It’s largely personal choice as to how many different plants to sow. However, you should select a mixture of grasses and wildflowers: this blend is a key characteristic

|

of meadows. Tempting as it is to collect your own seeds from grasslands/verges, many species are protected by law and you don’t want to be arrested. The best times to sow your seed are early autumn (September-early October) or spring (April-May). To ensure it’s evenly distributed, mix it with damp sand or sawdust in a ratio of 1:3, scattering it by hand. Afterwards, lightly roll or tread the ground to settle the seeds. You can rake the soil but this may bury some seed too deep or allow lighter seeds to blow away. If the weather is very dry at sowing time, water lightly with a fine spray. It’s important to mow the meadow in the first year after sowing to encourage the flowers and grasses to grow strong roots. Cut to a height of 5cm after about 6-8 weeks of growth, and repeat every two months throughout the first summer. Remove any annual/perennial weeds which appear. From the second year onwards, cut spring meadows in July and through the remaining summer months, but summer meadows won’t need cutting until late August after the wildflowers have set seed. Leave part of the meadow margin uncut: insects will use dried stems and seed heads as shelters during the colder months. This area can be cut when the weather warms up in spring. Finally, top tip: leave the mowings in place after cutting to allow seeds to drop. If it’s a perennial meadow, collect the cut plants a few days later to prevent the soil becoming too fertile.

THINKING OF CHANGE APPLE OPTIONS?

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

For many years we have been providing solutions based around Apple products, including full data transfer, system setup, installation and Total Care support. We offer the full range of machines including IPads, iMac, MacBooks and more, with most devices instore for immediate purchase. As their product range is wide and varied we can best interpret your needs to match the most appropriate solution. To provide a little more substance I hope the following guide is useful: They offer 3 version of the iPad, being the iPad Pro available in 2 screen sizes 10.5” and 12.9” all with varying memory capacities, the iPad with a 9.7” screen size again in various memory capacities, finally we have the iPad mini with its 7.9” display and 128Gb of storage Often we do have used and refurbished units which will work as new and offer you a real cash saving Moving onto the computers, Apple offer both notebook and desktop machines, the most popular

desktop machines are called the iMacs which are sleek all in one units and are available in two different screen sizes the 21.5” and 27”, within each model range there is a selection of options, for different processors, memory, hard drives and graphics cards

44 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018

The notebook range offers three distinct models, The MacBook, Macbook Air and Macbook Pro . The MacBook is very light weighing in 0.9Kg, having battery life of upto 10 hours with a 12” display The Macbook Air has a 13” display, weighs in at 1.35Kg, battery life is upto 12 hours Finally the MacBook Pro is the larger, more powerful machine with screen size options of 13” and 15”, a range of processors, memory and graphics options ensuring you have the best specification to suit your requirements We do advise installing an internet Security program like Webroot on the machine to maintain your protection, which can be added or is an integral component of our comprehensive support package called Total Care Programs like Microsoft Office and Photoshop all have specific versions optimised to run on the Mac- which again are all items we can supply Moving your current data from a PC to a Mac, or a Mac to Mac, is a task our engineers can carry out for you, we can even bring the machine to your premises and set it up in your environment too There is a lot of choice and we are happy to advise you on the best solution for your needs.

BOOK REVIEWS OCTOBER

‘Eastern Horizons’ by Levison Wood (paperback £9.99) There is a pleasing contrast in lazing comfortably while reading the adventures of a writer who, when there is a choice, tends to take the dangerous road. Levison Wood’s hitch-hiking journey from the UK to India at the age of 22 took him across hard terrain and politically volatile territories. This makes for an exciting narrative against a shifting historical background, with stories from Alexander to the explorers of the Great Game, post-9/11 upheavals and the turbulence felt today. No country is entirely stable, and in Eastern Horizons the reader feels the tremors at ground level through encounters with refugees and at borders not open to all. This book is a reminder not to get too dug in to our comfort zone and to relish our freedom to travel. Shortlisted for the 2018 Edward Stanford Award.

‘All Among the Barley’ by Melissa Harrison (hardback £16.99) The Mather family have worked the 60 acres of arable land known as Wych Farm for over 100 years, but it is 1933 and the devastation of the Great War hangs like a pall over the country. 13 year old Edie Mather is bookish, dreamy and lonely when Constance FitzAllen arrives from London to document fading rural traditions. Constance worms her way into the small farming community and what initially seems a benign interest manifests itself as something altogether darker and more disturbing. Melissa Harrison excels at writing about the countryside and her writing is reminiscent of Thomas Hardy.

‘After the Party’ by Cressida Connolly (hardback £14.99) We first met Phyllis Forrester in prison, although for a long time it is not clear what she has done. The book then takes us back to when Phyllis and her children return from overseas and join her sister in a summer camp for ‘peace work’, which turns out to be a smokescreen for promoting fascist ideology. Phyllis and her family find themselves subsumed into the sinister world of Sir Oswald Mosley. This is a well-written novel and ideal for readers looking for something a little different.

MIKE THE BIKE- AGAIN THE STORY OF MIKE HAILWOOD’S RETURN TO THE TT

I remember Mike Hailwood when he was motor car racing in Formula 1 in the early ’70’s. I was quite surprised when Ted sent us this book to review to discover that Mike “The Bike” Hailwood first found success racing motorcycles, well before his days in Formula 1. And this book is about his return to his first love - TT racing! Probably the most prestigious and certainly the most demanding road race in the world. He first raced motorcycles in 1957 at Oulton Park and went onto to have a spectacular career in Grand Prix motorcycling, also competing in 24 hours of Le Mans. But for me, his real achievements were in his Isle of Man TT racing. For example, he was the first man in the history of TT to win three races in the same week when he won in the 125cc, 250cc & 350cc. Whilst much has been written and documented about Mike Hailwood and his stellar career, this book, MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN is a personal tribute and tale by his great friend Ted Macauley, of his return to TT racing. After

an 11 year break in competitive motor cycle racing few believed he could make the grade. How wrong they were! Mike took the sport by storm winning the Formula 1 Class race! Mike the Bike -Again tells the story of his decision to return, his attempt to hatch the plans for his return with his friend Ted (but without his wife Pauline finding out!), his practice and training with the “modern” bikes, his spectacular return in ’78, the loss of his friend and colleague Tom Herron, just weeks before the ‘79 TT, his retirement -second time around; and his untimely death in 1981 in the most tragic of circumstances. The warmth of friendship shines out from this book. Well written, with love, humour and anecdotes that could only be told by someone who was there, this book is a must read. Bernie Ecclestone, a longtime friend of Ted Macauley’s writes: “Mike the Bike-Again is a fitting salute to his everlasting presence in the minds of all of us who were fortunate enough to see him race-and to know him”.

To be in with a chance to win a copy of MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN answer the following question:

In which year did Mike Hailwood return to TT racing? Email your answer and your magazine area to: ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

VW CARAVELLE CAR REVIEW

It may look like a delivery van, but don’t be fooled, the VW Caravelle is a supreme people carrier with style and panache and plenty of disguised practicality. It ranks among the poshest of the posh mini-buses with a comfort level for seven people, however long their legs, giving them the spacious comfort of a living room three piece suite. And if your budget can stretch into Volkswagen’s asking price you will be rewarded with superb value for your hard-earned. The huge Caravelle, based on and developed as a descendant from the legendary and iconic Camper, is a VW with a status reaching far above that of a van with widows. It is a unique and distinctive crowd carrier with handy cabin facilities to cope cosily with a full house of travellers. If I am sounding like an enthusiast then, great, I’m getting the crucial message across. I have to say VW’s splendid reputation for meeting the needs and requirements of the fussiest customers is personified...yet again...in this oh-so-carefully considered and developed offering to its long-established fan base as well as being a lure to newcomers to the painstaking brand. It ain’t cheap, but it offers unrivalled space and versatility for the family gathering, including all their belongings and luggage in 775-litre load bay, and looking for economy and elbow room on the move. It is the perfect runaround with huge side windows that offer panoramic views for the lucky passengers. From

a driver’s standpoint, seated nice and high with great cinemascopic views, the punchy engines like the 2.0-litre TDI, with its seven gears auto box, ensures it has swift and smooth acceleration. It has all the trimmings and helps you would hope for and expect in a Volkswagen, including dials, five inch touch screen, digital radio and switches you’d recognise from the tried and tested Golf. Three climate control settings, tinted rear windows and roller blinds, help maintain a relaxed and comfortable coolness in the vast cabin. The second row of seats are swivelling captain’s chairs and adaptable enough for that area to revel into a lounge-like atmosphere. To add to the convenience and party mood for the passengers there is an optional folding table or shelves to create a bed for a nod-off. If you fancy, and you are on a house move or you have tons of Christmas shopping, you can remove all the seats and convert the spacious carrier into a van.Second thoughts - it would be just as well to slide the back end bench forwards to create the necessary space. If you are looking for a practical carrier with an enviable comfort zone and you have the readies to fork out then go for it. The Caravelle is a winner. Upper class. Specification: Price range £39,049-£51,579. My choice, the 2.0TDFI.Executive DSG. Power:150bhp. 0-62mph in 13.0 secs. MPG 47.1. Price £45,747. Warranty: three years unlimited mileage. ST ANDREW’S WELCOMES THE NEW VICAR OF COBHAM On 6th September the Very Revd Jo Bailey Wells, Suffragan Bishop of Dorking, licensed Revd Dr Mike Branscombe as Priest in Charge of St Andrew’s Church, Cobham. His title will be Vicar shortly, when the United Benefice with St Mary’s Stoke D’Abernon is officially ended. Mike Branscombe was ordained in Lichfield Cathedral in 1995 and married Margaret, a qualified teacher, in 1988. In 1999 they enjoyed a clergy summer exchange with a parish in Florida, which led to a move to ministry in the Episcopal Church (part of the Anglican Communion), at St Alfred’s Church, Palm Harbor, Florida, where he served as Assistant Rector and Youth Minister for 2 years. Their next church was the nearby Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater. During this time they adopted their daughters from China, Grace aged 2 in 2010 and Ella aged 6 in 2012. Also Mike completed his studies for Doctor of Ministry at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. After 12 years Mike and family moved back to the UK and he spent the last 3 years at the Birmingham city centre church of St Martin in the Bull Ring, where he was Director of Care and Discipleship. During the last year he has been acting as Rector of St Martin’s during the interregnum, leading a group of

clergy and lay colleagues. Whilst in the USA Margaret taught Drama at a private Episcopal Primary School and later moved to the University of South Florida to research for a PhD in Literary Studies, with a focus on Drama. She has recently travelled to a European Conference in Malmo, Sweden, to present her research with a group from Oxford Brookes University. Her PhD research will be published as a book in 2019. In September she took up her part-time appointment at Esher High School, where she supports small groups of Year 7 and 8 students who have difficulties in reading and writing. She hopes to continue with her Drama in Education consultancy and research. Ella and Grace are visually impaired and will have special help at school. Ella reads with special glasses and goes to choose books at Cobham Library. She likes to sing and dance and at school she loves PE activities. Grace is a member of the Royal National Institution for the Blind and chooses books from their Braille catalogue; she prefers non-fiction. She is musical and wants to continue learning the clarinet and saxophone. Both girls can touch type. At St Andrew’s they take part in Kids’ Church, Ella in the Discipleship group and Grace in Anchors.
