Gardens are for Sharing By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham describes her latest revelation about greens… Sadly progress has been slow on my own garden (mainly due to the busy-ness of the season) and I’ll need to wait until I have more to report before my next instalment. Clients gardens always take priority and there is so much to do work-wise at this time of year. Despite the neglect, much is looking good and blooming beautifully but there are too many weeds popping up and I am still leaving the newly formed beds to lie fallow so I can deal with the brutish plants I had grown under the old willow where nothing else survived. So….I’ve been looking slightly further afield for inspiration and have just returned from a beautiful walk around the village and up Telegraph Hill. The evening light as it dapples across the path which leads from the end of Old Claygate Lane is always such a pleasure with the views across the field and today a stunning wild rose to compliment the fresh greens.

18 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

How can I say it? The greens are staggeringly ‘green’ at the moment, with the Oak trees such a perfect shade of my favourite colour this evening. It’s such a blessing to have greenery around us and I was particularly aware of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place. I took time to appreciate the open grass and stately Oaks at the top of Telegraph hill and also the open grass and pretty trees of the Roundway. These green oases of communal green space are really special and we are so fortunate that our local council still just about has enough money to keep them maintained. Of course the benefits for the wider environment, (for birds and bees and air quality) are all just as important as the pleasure they give us. I also noticed all the front gardens I passed full of flowers and greenery and enjoyed the beauty of them too. Is it just me or do roses seem particularly beautiful this year? I was driving past a truly spectacular combination of deep red with pure white climbing roses in a front garden in Chessington yesterday evening too and noticed a young man stopping and looking and smelling one of the blooms. It made me so happy I nearly stopped and had a chat with him - but I realised (just in time) that that would probably embarrass him and put him off gardens for life! But it was nice to know that it’s not just me with my garden designer’s eye who stops and looks and appreciates a flower or two. So be encouraged when you are planting your garden, it’s not just you who will benefit from your garden but your neighbours and friends and passers-by may just notice and stop to touch or see of smell your roses. I think what I realised today, is that gardens are for sharing! Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons. co.uk and her facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

Walking Holiday,

Lego Rental

St Ives, June 1992 (with Holiday Fellowship)

“A walking holiday”, said my friend, “Really, Marion, you must be round the bend, You even creak getting out of bed And find it hard to turn your head Manoeuvring the car when in reverseCliff walking will be even worse. You’re out of puff if it isn’t level And Cornish cliffs are the very devil. What about blisters and aching feet? Constant thirst and prickly heat?” I wrote these lines before I came, Are my feelings still the same? These things, of course, may never happen, But I didn’t know then about ticks on bracken. Coastal walks with views superb, “What’s that flower? What’s that bird”? Cornish styles are not for you If you’re short of leg and five foot two. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, Especially when it concerns my feet. With comfort stops all shapes and sizes Rocks and bushes yield surprises. My sense of direction being rather dodgy, I could’ve missed land’s End or even Clodgy. The hardest thing throughout the week Was rememb’ring what I’d ticked to eat, Excellent services, led by Keith, With food, of course, beyond belief, Smashing company, a lovely week, I’ll come again, but with different feet!!

The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7

On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 6 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.

What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, upto date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

FORMULA ONE - THE KNOWLEDGE (SECOND EDITION)

Memory Lane, the pathway to personal history, can be a revelation of treasured moments, not always easily brought back to mind - and that’s when help, particularly from printed records, can be an absolute pleasure. From a personal point of view, that is what has happened to me in the form of a newly issued volume. Vast in its content, in the considerable and impressive shape of the tome, “Formula One - The Knowledge” 2nd Edition. In 544 pages, with 90 pictures, I have been captivated in recapturing my days as a world wandering F1 journalist. Writing on the thrill-a-minute grand prix world championship scene for the Daily Mirror when, at its most popular, the paper served five million readers a day. I revelled in shared lunches and dinners in far away places, in the one-to-one company of the likes of British legend Nigel Mansell, wonder-man Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Watson, John Surtees, and many, many more, Even Hollywood mega star Paul Newman, a committed car race fanatic and gifted driver, with whom I once spent a week. Many of them remain firm friends to this day. I hope you don’t think I am name dropping; they and their GPs were all in a very enjoyable day’s work for me. And, thanks to “The Knowledge” moments spent watching them race have all come flooding back and stirred forgotten and extra-special memories. I often disregard the publisher’s blurb, backing a book, but I agree with every single word of the support for this classic. And therefore, I shall give it an airing. Here goes.... And I quote: “The updated and extended 2nd edition of

26 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

this popular title is the most complete record of Formula 1 statistics ever published. More than 1200 sections on the drivers, the cars, the engines, the tyres and the circuits. Original ideas for analysis that won’t be found anywhere else. Performance records of every driver, every constructor and every engine make, to have taken part in F1. “Amazing coincidences, amusing anecdotes and many funny stories, as well as some serious ones. A summary of regulation changes since 1950, detailed insight into the variety of qualifying procedures throughout the years, a quick reference guide to every grand prix result. All the facts and figures you could ever want to know. “It is the only book ever to focus in such detail on Formula One records and to contain many new ideas for looking at Formula One. A new collection of carefully selected photographs depicting the history of Formula One. “This second edition by author David Hayhoe, has been entirely updated with three seasons of updated information. Apart from that, the content has been considerably extended with many sections re-designed featuring a complete new set of images.” So there! And I could not agree more. Veloce Publishing, as respected a publisher of motorsport books and records as you could find anywhere in the world, has done a fab job. It is priced at £55 and worth every penny.

A gift of an award for Garsons

A gift of an award – Garsons managing director Ian Richardson with the trophy for the Best Garden Centre Retailer of Gifts.

Garsons of Esher has been named the Best Garden Centre for Gifts in the country. At The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2019 in London, the family-run business scooped the top award in its category – an accolade which follows hot on the heels of Garsons’ recent special recognition in the national Toy Industry Awards. “We are thrilled to be given this honour and absolutely delighted to know that our gift range is the best it can be,” said Garsons managing director Ian Richardson. “Gifts are an important part of the shopping experience here at Garsons and The Greats Award reflects the dedication and hard work of our gift buying team who choose our range of beautiful products and select which wonderful suppliers and manufacturers to work with.” The garden centre’s extensive gift range, which includes

32 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

items from smaller suppliers not found on the high street alongside top brand names, has been on a winning streak for the past year. To date it has won Best Garden Centre Retailer of Greeting Cards and named the Garden Centre Association’s Best Indoor Lifestyle Retailer. At the ceremony for The Greats Awards, organiser Sue Marks, editor of Progressive Gifts & Home, said: “Despite the challenges that retail throws at independents and multiples year after year, the best continue to rise to the challenge and it is these ‘greatest of the great’ gift retailers that we were delighted to recognise and reward.” For more information visit the Garsons Farm website: www.garsons.co.uk. ESHER LIBRARY

It’s Summer already!! The Reading Challenge is with us again. Please encourage school children between the ages of 5-11 years to join in and read 6 books over the period of the holidays. They can sign up at the library from Saturday 6 July and have until September 14 to complete 6 books of their choice. We feel it is important to emphasis those words ie the books should be their own choice. Individuals are much more likely to complete the challenge if they select their own titles rather than those from a school reading list (obviously they do still count!!) Books can be non-fiction so can be about a hobby, learning a new skill or reading about a subject that is of particular interest. Maybe a new pet is on the horizon. This is good opportunity to gain knowledge of its care. Graphic novels, which take a comic book form, are a good way to encourage readers to try something different to the books they read at school, it is supposed to be fun!! Linked to the Reading Challenge we have 2 Craft Activities scheduled. Come on Tuesday 30 July and make a rocket then keep an eye out in the library or on the website for our activity on 13 August. We like to encourage parents to join the challenge of reading 6 books for themselves over this period!! It’s a brilliant excuse to have a quiet hour, sitting together reading your individual choices. In the aim to reduce plastic waste reusable Bamboo Travel Mugs are becoming very popular. We have some lovely designs for sale at the competitive price of £7.99 We also have lunch boxes/bags in various designs for sale at £3.99 (I think every member of staff in Surrey Libraries has one as there is a shape and pattern for all tastes) Decorative water bottles are priced at £4.50 (small) and £6.99 (large). All great for the new school term, sorry to mention this so early!! Our new Creative Writing Group for children starts in September. This will be our third group. Please make an expression of interest in the library.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe Summer. 34 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019
