12 Welcome to December

Despite the difficulties this year has brought us all, the festive season is a time so many of us look forward to, and we really do hope that some restrictions will be lifted over the Christmas period to enable families to be together. But, if we are unable to meet up with all of our loved ones, enjoying a virtual Christmas catch up, or a long phone call filled with love and laughter will mean the world. For many elderly folk, the techie options may not be available, so do think about any elderly neighbours you may have, living alone, especially at this time. A phone call on Christmas morning could make their day … or even a small Christmas gift left on their doorstep could really lift their spirts. It’s not about a fancy big expensive gift, but rather a sign that someone cares.

At the time of writing, England is in a second national lockdown, but most businesses are much better prepared than the first time around. Thankfully, our local tradespeople are on the whole, able to carry on working safely with social distancing and in many cases, PPE. Your support for them is greatly appreciated. Once this lockdown has lifted and we are able to venture out to local retailers, hairdressers, beauty, leisure, hotels, pubs and restaurants again, they will all be more than ready to welcome you back!

FIND YOUR WIRELESS HAPPY…. We appreciate this Christmas may not be a frantic as some due to current circumstances, but this is no reason to suffer poor and slow wifi connection, yes this could be upstairs in the kids bedrooms or in the study. There is a product which is low in cost, simple to install, works brilliantly and offers some really useful features-which really makes you ask “why did I not do this before?” The specific product I am referring to is the TP Link Deco E4 - 3 pack and costs just £160.00 As its name implies the kit consists of 3 units (transmitters), one unit plugs into your router with the other two units linking between themselves, usually they are positioned in areas near where you have signal weaknesses. phone/tablet app, which helps you setup the units quickly, and offers many useful facilities like “bedtime” mode, which turns the wifi off at predetermined times and days of the week, you also can setup different Wifi active times for different devices, for example your 10 year old child can only have wifi access until 7pm where as your 16 year old child’s device can have access until 10pm. The system uses “MESH” technology and this in short means that as you move between different areas the transmitters cover, the transmitter with the stronger signal will take your connection to ensure you always have the strongest and most resilient connection. This also means you have the same wifi network covering the whole property, making the connection of devices much simpler. We have sold many of these units and have been impressed with how simple they are to setup by many non technical home users - usually they are up and running within 10 minutes. We best recommend the use of the free smart

With some of the apps you can also “content control”. This can block access to unsuitable websites from specific devices by category like “adult content” or “firearms content”. You also can specify specific websites you may want to block by typing in the website address. Should you require any further help of information on this product, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Bringing you the latest design trends and tips when choosing a new kitchen Key trends for kitchens in 2021 Deep greens and blues, such as, forest green, dark teal, petrol blue and navy blue are becoming more and more of a popular statement for cabinet colours, either for the whole kitchen or paired with lighter ones such as sage green, neo mint and light blue. Venting Hobs are a must, no need for a large extractor cluttering up your room, they offer a powerful, builtin extraction mechanism all the while providing a sleek and stylish induction hob to seamlessly integrate into your kitchen. Perfect for the open plan living kitchen space that are as popular as ever! Metallics are now being introduced not only on taps, handles, lights and other accessories within the kitchen but also as cabinet doors and worktops. It is a great feature to introduce for that ultra-modern rustic style. Top tips when choosing a new kitchen Go with your instincts on colours and style. Don’t feel afraid to go for something that is bold because you are worried it won’t stand the test of time. In our experience always go with your gut instinct because that is telling you what you really want. A kitchen is the place to show your personality! 18 LookLocal - DECEMBER 2020

HOME WANTED! Chloe

Chloe is an adorable mature female tabby who came into care because (for no apparent reason) her owner no longer wanted her. She spent most of her time outside and was unkempt; her fur was in a bad state. As you can see, with some much deserved TLC her fur is back to normal and she is a beautiful cat. Despite her previous neglect she is so gentle and is a bit of a ‘purr machine’. She loves being stroked and brushed; she simply loves being loved. She would be an ideal companion for an older person. If you feel you could give Chloe the loving home she absolutely deserves, please call Sue on 0208 390 3165. or email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to www.justgiving.com/Epsom-Cats-Protection

Book Reviews DECEMBER 2020

A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende (Hardback £16.99) I have always enjoyed Isabel Allende’s novels and this one did not disappoint. A truly epic story stretching from 1936 Spain to Chile in 1994. The fascinating tale follows Victor Dalmau and Roser Bruguera’s life together through the Spanish Civil War and then as refugees in France and Chile. This historical fiction story, based on true events, vividly brings to life the trauma and horror of war. It also provides hope and inspiration for those who are forced to flee oppression.

The Wild Silence by Raynor Winn (hardback £14.99) In her bestselling debut, ‘The Salt Path’, Raynor Winn walked several hundred miles round England’s South West Coast Path with her husband Moth, after their home was lost to bailiffs. Worse, Moth had been diagnosed with corticobasal degeneration. Written as a gift for Moth, a record of their endurance, ‘The Salt Path’ was shortlisted for several awards and it caught the eye of Sam, a City trader with a farm beside a creek in Cornwall. He offered Ray and Moth a free tenancy in return for reviving the wildlife on the farm. Their relocation here, once again in search of natural healing but also a sense of home, is the premise of ‘The Wild Silence’.

Home Stretch by Graham Norton (hardback £20) Graham Norton’s compelling third novel begins the day before a wedding, when a car crash claims the life of three young people from a small Irish community and has repercussions for decades. After two novels focusing on the lives and secrets of women in Ireland, Norton’s new book traces the way life has changed for gay men and their families. With the cause of the car crash more complicated than it seems, young Connor leaves the oppressive atmosphere of home for a new life in Liverpool and then in New York, but the old ties of home are never quite lost or forgotten.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON CHRISTMAS by Marion Kemp

Every year as I unfold the tree Each decoration stirs a memory Of how small fingers, with serious toil, Made egg gg-box g bells with silver foil, Angels and fairies with wobbly wings, Snowmen and streamers, and glittery things, Delicate ornaments all tissue-wrapped, And chipped old baubles which should be scrapped. Tempers frayed, frr and oh the fights Trying to fix those blinking lights! You wonder if Christmas had ever been As you quietly slip back into the old routine, The walls are bare, decorations packed, And a pile of cards waits, neatly stacked, For you to sit down and read them all, Whether neatly typed or hasty scrawl, From friends frr who over many years Have shared their news, their hopes, their fears, And, because you do not see them much, Value even more that they keep in touch.

Whatever your views, it’s not hard to explain Why deep down inside you’re moved again By well-loved music, and carols off key, And toddlers taking part in the Nativity, Candles that flicker, faces that glow, Hugs and presents from frr those you know. Oli, the dog At Princess Alice Hospice, we love a fabulous furry friend, so when our new Supporter Care Assistant, Rianna Pike, shared a fur-ly big secret with us, we were intrigued. Rianna told us in her first month that she owns a dog that was born at the Hospice. Oli, who is now eight years old, was the puppy of a dog owned by patient Oli Pereira and his wife, Mariel. Mariel told us that on admission to the Hospice, Oli had expressed concerns that he might not see his beloved dog’s puppies being born. On hearing his worries, clinical staff at the next admissions meeting arranged for the canine mum-to-be to come into the Hospice when Oli was admitted, and her puppies were all born under Oli’s bed. Soon after the birth, Rianna’s mum, Clinical Nurse Specialist Beverley Clayton, who had worked at the Hospice for over 30 years, enquired after the puppies and found there was only one left; after a quick chat with her family, she offered to adopt him, calling him Oli with the same spelling. Beverley retired from the Hospice three years ago, but Rianna is a recent recruit to our Supporter

Oli, Rianna and Beverley

Care team, and her colleagues were amazed when they heard about Oli. On hearing of Rianna’s story, Oli’s widow Mariel told us: “I am eternally grateful to Princess Alice Hospice for allowing Oli the opportunity to witness the puppies’ birth during his last days of life. It was such a compassionate gesture of humanity and kindness on behalf of the team at Princess Alice. It fills me with happiness to hear that everyone there still remembers this joyful event and keeps the fond memories alive.” Beverley and Rianna told us that Oli is a very affectionate pet and a joy to have in the family. Beverley said: “Hearing that puppies were being born at the Hospice was a little surprising, but we do go above and beyond to do this kind of thing. Then I learned the last one was still available and went for it, calling him Oli seemed the right thing to do after his mum’s owner. We all love him very much, and he’s very special to us. Particularly as he had an unusual start in life.” To advertise please call us at 01372 200 000 25

Lunchtime Concerts Christ Church, Esher

Music on the Green’s original programme plans for November and December are, sadly, in suspended animation due to the current situation with the pandemic. Virus permitting, we still hope to provide some sort of festive lunchtime words and music in our annual “Come and Sing” carols event on Wednesday 16 December. We also are planning to reschedule our Beethoven 250th anniversary celebration concerts for early 2021. Please keep and eye on our website or call our Parish Office for the latest information. Thank you.

A Lasso Around the Moon; The making of Frank Capra’s ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ A talk by Pete Allen

Despite being a box office disaster on its release and the film that signaled the demise of the career of one of the pioneers of cinema, how did a film, which one critic called a ‘turkey dinner,’ go on to be named the 7th best film in Channel 4’s poll of the ‘100 Greatest Films Ever Made’? The talk celebrates ‘It’s a

Inspiration! Who Do You Think You Are?? I noticed something interesting when I was just starting to get better after three weeks of sickness. I was being cautious. I was treating myself with care. When I needed to do X or Y, I would wonder if I’d manage to do them. Although I didn’t realise it at the time, this was a voice I had grown up with, doubting myself, telling me I wasn’t good enough; that I would get things wrong, or not do them well enough, or just plain fail at them. I don’t know about you, but that’s not the kind of voice I want to listen to. I want a voice that encourages, energises and inspires me. And yet I was listening to a voice that kept me small! Because I was thinking of myself as still being sick, I was acting as though I was sick, possibly after I needed to. And so there were times when I didn’t do healthy things like exercise, or go out for a walk, because I was feeling tired and the voice in my head was saying “Just stay in your chair and rest”. But the truth is that had I pushed myself, I would almost definitely have felt better afterwards. When I noticed that, I realised I had a choice: to think of myself as sickly and fragile, or healthy and strong. It wasn’t possible to believe I was fragile and behave as though I was healthy. The sick me couldn’t exercise and do the things my body needed. And the healthy me couldn’t afford to indulge in thoughts of being weak. I’m not saying you can stop ill-health by pretending to be healthy. When I was sick, I really was sick, and couldn’t even contemplate walking upright and holding down food, let alone exercising and making healthy salads. But once my body began to feel

stronger, I did myself no favours by continuing to think of myself as weak. Often, the voices in our head keep us stuck in unhealthy patterns, whether physical or emotional. They encourage us to eat unhealthy foods, or skip our daily exercise. They keep our thoughts hooked on unhappy events and past failures, or imagine personal disasters and humiliation. We are so used to hearing them that we don’t realize we can create more useful messages. What are your ‘voices’ telling you? Do they make you stop short of what you can achieve? Or do they push you hard to do more than feels comfortable at a cost to your wellbeing? What if they said “Come on, you can do this! Let’s find the best way to achieve your happiness, your success and your health”? Listen carefully!

THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER The gloomy pessimist in me suffers an annual dread that the winter spell will never fail to serve up rotten weather and render me a marooned and helpless soul trapped in my dwelling...albeit with a lovely and caring missus who patiently makes efforts to override my misery. With my offspring spread hundreds of miles around the rural countryside, daughter in Norfolk, son in Cheshire, Cheshire, each at the other end of an arduous trek, taking in motorways and tight and twisty country lanes, visits can be a dire peril. But I know I can make light of them in the thoroughly efficient new look Land Rover Defender that can wave two fingers at nature’s obstacles and cope superbly with stop-go traffic. It revels in greater ground clearance and reinforced suspension, allowing it to tackle with ease the steepest and most testing slopes. Not only that, the shorter version the Defender 90 boasts an off-road agility that is equal to its sibling, the current Land Rover Discovery... The 90, with three doors, has a shorter body than the 110 with its five doors and its availability with five or seven seats. In its fine form the 110, particularly, with its higher trim level is a strong challenger to the well established enemies Audi 07 and Volvo XC90m. While the 90 takes on SUVs like Audi 05,BMW X3 and the Toyota. Altogether, eager to serve all needs and preferences of the picky driver, Land Rover offer six engines that are diesel, petrol or hybrid which between them variously return 23.9mpg or 85.3mpg and with a three year warranty your choice will set you back £43,6125 to £83.685. Mmmmmm! Not cheap — but to my mind for what they give you back is well worth some deep thought 30 LookLocal - DECEMBER 2020

and consideration. For example neither the nasty weather, a country-length journey with all the family aboard or a wickedly challenging off road excursion will overstrain its ability. Splashing through streams, nosing through knee-deep mud and nipping in and out of whatever other hazards present themselves is exactly what it is made for. Okay..okay..I know we lucky Surreyites don’t suffer offbeat bad weather conditions too often but when they do occur your garaged great will be prepared for the problems. There is what they call a “terrain response” system that makes light work of setting up for whatever differing conditions you face...the sort that trap your regular transport in your garage. With the car in its tallest off-road supercar mode, the Defender reduces the risks served up by deep ruts and, just to boost your confidence, ascends slithery and mucky slopes with amazing ease. The air sprung versions can even jack themselves up automatically by an extra 70 mm if it realises it is about to scrape its underbelly? Wow!! And what is more the aerodynamics smooth out any intrusions from our occasional gale force encroachments and there is little if any buffeting around the windscreen. And just to ensure your dozing, relaxing passengers benefit from their snoozy settings there is a deliberately subdued level of tyre roar. They may spread three abreast in the back, with an occasional add-on seat to cope with three up front, such is the broad-shouldered width of the Defender, another word for satisfaction on the go. What more can I say? Nothing - except go for it. I would.
