I do hope you manage to celebrate the festive season safely, or in fact managed to celebrate safely, depending on when you are reading this, and although it’s been different for many of us this year, I hope that you still had a lovely time. A quiet festive break is anticipated for us all here at 'Team Look Local’ and we are very much looking forward to having our “Works Christmas meal” as soon as it is safe to do so in the New Year. We certainly have much to catch up on, having not actually been in the same room for about a year! It will also be wonderful to welcome back our lovely Look Local designer Kirsty in January, after 9 months of maternity leave, following the safe arrival of baby Ayla. There will certainly be big celebrations when we finally get back together! I for one, can’t wait to get that vaccine! Hopefully by the time this magazine hits your door mat, many of you will be ready to have your shots and looking forward to life starting to feel a bit more normal again! We certainly can’t wait to have a good selection of events and meetings to include in our pages once again. Let’s keep everything crossed and please do, watch this space! In the meantime, we are delighted to bring you a great selection of local businesses and services for you to tap into as required. Your continued support is, I know, very much appreciated by all our advertisers who never fail to amaze me with their enthusiasm and keenness to serve our local communities. Here’s wishing them all an easier and prosperous 2021. We wish you, our fabulous readers, a great month and a wonderful New Year too. So until we return next time… Warmest Regards,
Ros x

moroccan-style tray-baked chicken ingredients 1 large onion, sliced 2 garlic cloves, sliced ½ lemon, thinly sliced (knobbly end discarded) 400g can chick peas, drained & rinsed 350g carrots, halved or quartered lengthways (or left whole if they’re small) 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Bart Blends Ras El Hanout 8 British chicken thighs, trimmed of excess fat Handful flat leaf parsley leaves Handful coriander leaves 4 tbsp natural yogurt (Serves 4)
method 1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Place the onion, garlic, lemon, chick peas and carrots over the base of a large roasting tin. Sprinkle with the oil and scatter with ½ the ras el hanout. Season and toss together to coat. Arrange the chicken thighs on top of the vegetables. Season the skin and sprinkle with the remaining ½ tbsp ras el hanout. 2. Roast for 25 minutes, then lift the chicken from the pan and toss all the vegetables. Return the chicken, baste with the juices and roast for another 15-20 minutes until golden. Ensure the juices run clear and there is no pink meat. 3. Scatter the chicken and carrots with the herbs, and serve with the yogurt, plus some couscous or flatbread, if liked.
cooking tip Ras el hanout is a Moroccan blend that works a treat in chicken dishes. It includes black pepper, ginger, coriander, smoked paprika, allspice, cardamom, mace, nutmeg, turmeric, cayenne, cloves and rose petals!

HISTORIC HIGH STREETS Community Exhibition
Do you want to support your local high street? Then Elmbridge Museum needs YOU! to include the sale of radios, gramophones and other technology gyy across multiple outlets. Sadly, the shops never made it into the new century, with both branches closing in the late 1900s. The Walton shop building is now occupied by Rentstart, a charity helping local Elmbridge people who are homeless. The Weybridge store was knocked down, and later redeveloped into the current Waitrose site.
I
Figure 1: Crowd looking in on the Rogers of Weybridge shop window, c.1950s.
n this 1950s snapshot of Walton-on-Thames High Street, a throng of women and men is gathered, frozen in fascination, around a shop window. The scene is intriguing – and not just because the concept of people grouped closely together has become so foreign in recent months. The photograph effortlessly depicts the excitement of the onlookers. All All had eagerly gathered, long after sunset (something not so easily visible from the photo!), to peer in at the new, cutting-edge technology gyy which featured in the Rogers & Sons shop window. The modern devices on display, which transmitted moving images and sounds onto small screens, were otherwise known as televisions. They would soon be making their way into homes across Britain in their thousands. As is signalled on their store front, Rogers & Sons originated as a successful family business in Weybridge. The store began at number 56 Weybridge High Street, as a garage, motor and cycle shop. After a boom in business and the acquisition of R. Seaman & Sons butchers shop next door in the 1930s, they expanded their offer
Since being taken, the photo has been stored away safely in Elmbridge Museum’s huge collection of 43,000 images, objects and memories. But the story it tells is just one among a colourful mosaic of experiences and personalities which, put together, make up the vibrant history our borough’s local high streets.
Figure 3: The interior of the Weybridge branch of Rogers & Sons, selling a variety of TVs and radios, c.1950s.
Now, we need your help to reveal the full story!
Our latest exhibition, opening in March 2021 at Esher High Street’s Civic Centre, will look at the changing identities of high streets across Elmbridge, as well as the people who have influenced them. By gathering a variety of contributions from our local community, we’ll look at both ‘then’ and ‘now’, tracking the evolution of the high street from the 50s, 60s and 70s right up to the present day. If you have memories, personal photographs, videos, or even objects which relate to the distant or recent history of any Elmbridge High Street, then we’d love to hear from you. Your contribution will help to curate the online exhibition, and could even end up going on display! For more information on how to tak ake k part:
Figure 2: A view of Weybridge High Street looking south-west from near Monument Green, c.1960s. Tyler & Co. Wine Shop can be seen right foreground, and next to that the Rogers & Sons shop. The words ‘Real Radio’ can be seen painted onto the front wall.

A Lasso Around the Moon; The making of Frank Capra’s ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ A talk by Pete Allen
Despite being a box office disaster on its release and the film that signaled the demise of the career of one of the pioneers of cinema, how did a film, which one critic called a ‘turkey dinner,’ go on to be named the 7th best film in Channel 4’s poll of the ‘100 Greatest Films Ever Made’? The talk celebrates ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, a film that’s now as much as part of Christmas as mince pies and mistletoe.
Wednesday 6th January at 7pm ABOUT THE SPEAKER... Pete Allen, a popular and accomplished speaker on all things Film & Theatre, is the Director of The RC Sherriff Trust, an arts charity established through terms set down in the will of the playwright and author RC Sherriff.

convertible Reviewed by Ted Macauley
If you do not already own one, and they sell like wildfire, the updated, upgraded brand new mini convertible is a must have for anybody looking for a genuine bargain allied to quality and economy. Well, that’s my honest appraisal and I happily recommend this fourth generation challenger on the petite car market. I am not alone in hailing this wee beauty. It has been awarded “Best Convertible” status in a widely respected specialist set-up with more advanced technology than in any of its prize winning predecessors. And, believe me, It is absolute fun to drive as you revel in its stylish and comfy interior which is crammed full of modern tech stuff cleverly packaged so it doesn’t intrude on your concentration. The 1.5 model which will top 0-60mph in a respectable and useful 8.8. seconds, is also not a big wallet emptier with a handy return of 52mpg. The 6.5 inch infotainment screen brings you a world of music and entertainment on the go and at the slightest touch, embarrassment an update on traffic problems or dodgy perils ahead.
26 LookLocal - JANUARY 2021
And when you want to reverse into a tight spot there is a rear parking, distance control sensor to save you from any embarrassment or bumper scrapes. Going forward has its valuable helpmate too, in the form of LED lights that offer clearer brighter views for high beam driving along the darkest by-ways. Now...how about that soft top? Even on the move at around 20mph the roof will open up smoothly in just 18 seconds. Right now, in mid winter, I know that doesn’t matter - but come the sunnier, warmer days when you are off to the seaside, that will be a very welcome addition. Overall it is not the least bit surprising that it has picked up yet another mega award. Little wonder the director of the mini project, David George, beams with pride, “it is a fantastic accomplishment to have won the award for the fourth year running. “Our treat of a mini convertible has outsold its rivals every year since its original launch in 2016 - and keeps putting a smile on our valued customers’ faces.” Mine,too.....

The Joyful Environmentalist by Isabel Losado (Paperback £12.99) Subtitled ‘How to Practice Without Preaching’, this is an entertaining and encouraging guide to making life more environmentally friendly without giving up on pleasure. Losado’s friendly narrative voice and thorough research means that it’s a fun read for adults of all ages. She gives practical tips on how to reduce our carbon footprint, create less waste, and help the environment flourish. She covers home energy, gardening, fashion, banking and plastic alternatives. She goes on adventures and interviews pioneers to get to the heart of the issues. She also covers the important question of how to enjoy excellent food and wine while helping the planet.
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (Hardback £14.99) This has been a popular choice with our customers and it’s worth discovering. It also makes a great gift, providing a satisfying mystery with plenty of humour and delight. Set in a retirement village, the members of The Thursday Murder Club meet to test their wits against unsolved murders. When a killing happens on their own territory they find themselves with a live case to investigate. The four friends bring their different personalities and quirks to the task in this gripping detective novel with a difference.
The Snow Ball by Brigid Brophy (Paperback £9.99) Embrace the hedonistic side of winter in this cult classic. On a snowy New Year’s Eve, an eighteenth-century themed masquerade ball is in full swing at a London mansion. Anna, a middle-aged divorcee, is feeling mournful until the clock strikes midnight and a masked figure kisses her on the mouth. She is not alone in experiencing the mystery of romance and seduction on this night, but what lies beneath the glamour of the party? When first published in 1964 this book caused quite a stir, and its reissue encourages a new generation of readers to join the dance.

Inspiration!
Easy Does It! It’s the beginning of a new year. Chances are you want this year to be better than the last. Who doesn’t! So what are you going to do about it? It’s tempting to blame coronavirus for all our woes from last year and wait for the world around us to change so that our lives can improve. But that’s just giving our power away. Maybe you’re one of the fortunate people who have been able to use this time to make lasting, positive change – to take up running and get fit for the first time ever, to write that book you’ve been telling yourself (and everyone else) you’re going to write ‘one day’, to spend more time with your family and deepen your most important relationships. For most of us, though, it can be overwhelming to think of all the things we need to do just to survive, let alone to change our lives to become more successful, fit, healthy, or happy. Often we look at our goals, and they’re so big and far away that we can’t imagine getting there. I’m not a fan of New Year’s Resolutions: getting all fired up on 1 January by the thought of having another chance to smash the goals we failed so dismally at achieving last year ... and the year before ... And once February comes round and we’ve failed at our NY Resolutions, well, there’s not much point in trying again. So we drop the idea of improving our lives and settle for whatever life hands us, whether we’re happy with it or not. But what if we asked ourselves, What is one tiny step I can take today, in just a few minutes, that would improve my life? Make it really easy. And tag your new action onto 30 LookLocal - JANUARY 2021
something you already do several times a day. My dumbbells live near the bottom of the stairs. Each time I pass them, my conscience reminds me to do ten lifts. Just ten. I usually end up doing 20 or 30, but if I have no time, ten is fine. I have my rebounder near my desk, so that when I get up, it’s there, in my way. It’s easier to step onto it than walk around it, and I can do a bit of running on the spot to get my circulation and lymph moving. You get the picture! Little changes don’t need great willpower. Whether it’s a choice around food, exercise, learning, relationships or practising gratitude, if you break it down into really tiny steps, you’ll find yourself inching closer to your goal without really trying. Little changes add up. So each time you take your tiny steps, celebrate! You’re getting closer.
