From the EDITOR
HELLO ESHER & CLAYGATE The vibrant autumn colours seem to have arrived a little earlier than normal this year, maybe that’s been caused by the scorching summer? Anyway, it’s looking very pretty around the villages and the conkers will soon be falling. Let’s enjoy the last few weeks of lighter evenings, before the time change slips us into early darkness…. (Clocks go back on Sunday 28th October) Included this month, we have a selection of interesting features; a wonderful Charity called Music in Hospitals celebrates its 70th Birthday this year, you are invited to join the celebrations! This is a charity which we could all benefit from at some time in our lives… Bridge seems to be a very popular pass time, and we are happy to include two features about just that. Many local players enjoyed the Esher Cafe Bridge event recently and raised funds for a great local charity whilst having a fun time too! See our Bridge features on pages 40 & 41. We have two great competitions this month; firstly the chance to win a family ticket to attend ‘The Railway Children’ at The Leatherhead Theatre as part of their up-coming Leatherhead Rep Season. See page 14 for that. Our second prize, comes in the form of a book for motorbike racing enthusiast! Written by our very own Look Local motorhead, Ted Macauley (who kindly writes our much enjoyed car review each month) about legendary Mike ‘the Bike’ Hailwood’s return to the TT. Read our review and see details of how to win on page 36. Good luck to all who enter. All this and lots more within, I hope you enjoy our October issue. Until next time, do take care,
Ros

Leatherhead Theatre Competition Hidden behind a Leatherhead street-front is one of the best theatres of the 1960s. Access from the street is by way of a short corridor. A feature of the theatre is that all the foyer areas and the auditorium are accessible to wheelchairs. Standard now, this level of consideration of the disabled was outstanding when it opened in 1969, and won the building a new disability award in 1971. On the ground floor is the coffee bar. There is also a licensed bar open during evening performances and an area used as an art gallery and available to hire for exhibitions. As with many 1960s British theatres the auditorium seats are all on one steeply raked tier; unusually they are undivided by aisles, keeping the audience as a single unit. The auditorium is remarkably unaltered, with its original decor and its brick-tile walls with four expressive lighting slits curving out. Because of its thoughtful design and its relatively small number of seats, The Theatre is one of the most intimate and architecturally accomplished proscenium theatres of British modernism. Details of productions, opening and contact information can be found on:Â www.the-theatre.org

Music in Hosptials & Care (MiHC)
Music in Hospitals & Care (MiHC) is a national charity and this year celebrates 70 years of creating joy through interactive live music for people receiving care or treatment in healthcare settings. MiHC organises annually some 5,000 live performances across the UK. Each music session is presented by small groups of professional musicians who have been carefully selected for their high standard of musicianship and communication skills. These qualities enable them to relate not just to the physical needs but also the psychological and social needs of their audience. Their encouraging and empathic approach can stimulate all the senses. The benefits of a live performance are immeasurable. A stroke patient unable to speak sings along to a familiar song. The child attached to a heart monitor whose heart rate begins to return to normal as she listens to her favourite song being sung by her bedside. Medical staff often tell us how patients blossom during a MiHC concert. It is wonderful to watch people who seem expressionless begin to sit upright, their heads lift and their eyes begin to smile. Music is the most emotive of the arts and has great therapeutic properties. It has the capacity of tuning into our deepest feelings as well as having the power
16 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
to break down social and cultural barriers. A live performance can help reduce levels of anxiety, pain and depression as well as providing a great socialising activity. MiHC musicians bring more than just music to their audiences. They help to promote wellbeing, improve memory recall and stem mental decline. They do not provide miracle cures but they sensitively help to ‘bring the person out of the patient.’ Do join us to celebrate our 70th birthday: • Sunday, 28th October 3.00pm MiHC’s 70th Birthday Celebration with Toby Spence (Tenor), Christopher Glynn (piano) and Orpheus Papafilippou (violin) with Rimantas Vingras (piano) at Hendall Manor Barns, Uckfield • Friday, 23 November 2.00pm “Cake and a Concert” at Riverhouse Barn, Walton-on-Thames Local carers, healthcare groups, care homes and people in the local community who otherwise feel isolated will be invited to enjoy high quality live music, dance, tea and cake together. • Tuesday, 4th December 7.30pm at Peace Memorial Hall, Ashtead– Soundbytes Choir, come along and enjoy songs from pop, gospels, musicals and more. Entrance free – donations to MiHC For further information please visit: www.mihc.org.uk

CRAZY IN ESHER! On Sunday 9th September at Sandown Park Golf Centre in Esher, David Smith from Wishing Well in Bookham, along with his wife Michelle, their friends Viv Barlow & Beverlie Isaacs, and Val Woodward & Sam Janes from the Princess Alice Hospice charity shop in Bookham and team held a charity Crazy Golf day to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Over a hundred people paid to play and along with a Winner’s Post tombola and a luxury raffle over £1300 was raised. Surrey Hills Community Radio station came along and entertained the players with a wide range of music throughout the event. www.surreyhillsradio.co.uk David’s Smith said “I am delighted with the success of the day. People have been so generous with their time, money and donations and this has enabled us to raise a great amount of money for this worthy cause” As always, Bookham businesses, too numerous to mention, were extremely generous in donating prizes. A special mention has to go to Georgia, Beverlie’s daughter, whose employer Willian Reed Business Media in Crawley www. william-reed.com donated an amazing array of wines and champagnes which no doubt contributed to the success of the raffles. Thanks also go to Sandown Park Golf Centre who generously provided the facilities free of charge and donated a whole raft of prizes to enable people to enjoy their amazing facilities on another visit. For more information about Crazy Golf and other activities at Sandown Park Golf Centre go to: www.sandownparkgolf.com David and the team want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for making the days a great success.
CREATING SEATING SPACES BY SELINA BOTHAM
RHS Award winning designer Selina Botham of Designs for all Seasons discusses how to create that perfect seating space in your garden. Purpose - Think carefully about the purpose of your seating area. A large dining space will be great for entertaining, but not so good for an intimate supper for two, so its important to work out exactly what you do want and design according to your own specific needs. Don’t block important routes or views from your house with bulky furniture otherwise your seating space can create a barrier to the rest of the garden and you’ll wonder why you never seem to venture out into your garden. A secondary seating area will create another destination and encourage you to explore your garden. Consider if this will be a smaller dining space or a bench or sun loungers or even a hammock. A seating place can be a perch to just sit and momentarily enjoy an experience or a view, or it can be a comfortable place which involves you reclining and relaxing for a while. Everyone is different and so its important to work out what you want and need. Place - Often flexibility is needed and it’s a good idea to create seating spaces in different parts of the garden for use at different times of the day or in different seasons. Somewhere facing the morning sun will be lovely for morning coffee on a spring day and this can then double
20 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
up as a shady spot in the afternoon in a heat wave. Think of the seasons too and how you could make the most of your garden all year round. It can be so nice to have somewhere sheltered to sit outside on a sunny winters day. I’ve had clients with beautiful greenhouses who use them in the winter as somewhere to sit and enjoy the winter sun. Atmosphere - The atmosphere of a seating place is affected by factors including its size, position, the materials used and also the adjoining planting. Lighting is also key so that you can use your seating spaces at night. Think about the atmosphere you want and design the seating spaces accordingly. A seating space always feels safer and more cosy if you have a backdrop of planting or a wall. Getting the seating spaces right in your garden is a key part of the whole design and if you need some help do consult a garden designer as a fresh pair of eyes and someone to help you work out what you want can be helpful for you. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Surrey. If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk, facebook Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons or Instagram @designsforallseasons

Fry in a hot frying pan (or on a griddle or barbecue) for 5 minutes. Flip and cook for 2 minutes, then top each with a cheese slice. Cook for 3 minutes more, until no pink meat remains and the juices run clear. Pile into the rolls with the guacamole, pepper mixture and remaining coriander.
Cook’s Tip Coarsely grating the onion is an easy way to incorporate it into the burger mixture without needing to chop it finely.

Your skin is the biggest giveaway of your age; not wrinkles As we age, we often think it’s fine lines and wrinkles that we need to reduce to maintain the youthful look that reflects how we’re feeling on the inside. But this isn’t always the case! Other common skin concerns can have an ageing effect on our skin and have a real impact on your confidence. Read below to find out what could be making you look older than you feel and what you can do about it. Age Spots, Discolouration & Dark Patches
Scarring
Pollution and sun damage are common factors that can affect your skin health. This shows itself in pigmentation, age spots, discoloration and uneven skin tone. And although it may not look particularly sunny outside, the harmful UVA rays (the ageing rays) are still out in force!
Whether it’s from acne in your teens or environmental damage, facial scarring can be a big giveaway of your skin health.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) can help reduce the signs of sun damage for a more youthful, refreshed look. It works by pulsing high energy light beams through the skin to target pigmentation and age spots, which then flake away leaving you with a more even skin tone.
Facial Redness Redness and rosacea are common skin concerns that can leave you feeling self-conscious. As we age, little red veins and broken capillaries can start to appear around our nose and cheeks. IPL for redness is and advanced solution to target the problem area. Conditioning Treatments, such as Skincare Infusion help to reduce skin redness; using sound waves to penetrate products deep within the dermal layer for reduced redness, optimal hydration and lasting results.
Microneedling is one of our most popular and effective treatments for improving the appearance of scars and skin texture. Microneedling involves using tiny needles to prick the skin. When our skin is damaged, it produces collagen tissue, which is stronger, and firmer than before. With repeating treatment, collagen fibers are strengthened and the skin becomes stronger, smoother, and firmer, with improved texture.
Uneven Skin Texture As we get older, we start to notice a lack of skin smoothness; rough, dry patches and enlarged pores. Skin hydration and environmental factors are common causes along with excess dead skin cells building on the skin’s surface. Conditioning Treatments, such as our signature Detox Treatment is ideal for combatting uneven texture by resurfacing the skin with advanced exfoliation. This skin resurfacing process removes dead skin cells and encourages circulation to treated skin, promoting smoother and healthier skin.

P OEM C O RN E R RETURNING TO WORK If you’re feeling past your prime Returning to work is a trying time. The Office you knew belongs to the past, Everything now moves incredibly fast With row upon row of square machines Issuing orders on viewing screens. You can’t avoid the new computer That throws up data and tells the future, A faultless memory, nothing’s missed, With everything stored on a floppy disc!
A golden rule is, “Learn to Adjust, Watch your Hands, and Watch your Bust”, For new machines are so electronic And terribly sensitive, it would be chronic If leaning forward precipitated A chain reaction not anticipated, A wrong key pressed, it comes to a halt And angrily bleeps because of the fault. Your machine at home though out of the Ark, Never threw tantrums and refused to start! What you notice most of all Is the age of the people now in control, For youth and technology go together And at that “certain age” you wonder whether You’re able to cope? – But rest assured Employers like ladies who’re well matured, Efficient and friendly, prepared to adapt, Tackling all problems with patience and tact. These lines, of course, are senseless twaddle After running a home, the Office’s a doddle!! Isn’t it??

MIKE THE BIKE- AGAIN THE STORY OF MIKE HAILWOOD’S RETURN TO THE TT
I remember Mike Hailwood when he was motor car racing in Formula 1 in the early ’70’s. I was quite surprised when Ted sent us this book to review to discover that Mike “The Bike” Hailwood first found success racing motorcycles, well before his days in Formula 1. And this book is about his return to his first love - TT racing! Probably the most prestigious and certainly the most demanding road race in the world. He first raced motorcycles in 1957 at Oulton Park and went onto to have a spectacular career in Grand Prix motorcycling, also competing in 24 hours of Le Mans. But for me, his real achievements were in his Isle of Man TT racing. For example, he was the first man in the history of TT to win three races in the same week when he won in the 125cc, 250cc & 350cc. Whilst much has been written and documented about Mike Hailwood and his stellar career, this book, MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN is a personal tribute and tale by his great friend Ted Macauley, of his return to TT racing. After
an 11 year break in competitive motor cycle racing few believed he could make the grade. How wrong they were! Mike took the sport by storm winning the Formula 1 Class race! Mike the Bike -Again tells the story of his decision to return, his attempt to hatch the plans for his return with his friend Ted (but without his wife Pauline finding out!), his practice and training with the “modern” bikes, his spectacular return in ’78, the loss of his friend and colleague Tom Herron, just weeks before the ‘79 TT, his retirement -second time around; and his untimely death in 1981 in the most tragic of circumstances. The warmth of friendship shines out from this book. Well written, with love, humour and anecdotes that could only be told by someone who was there, this book is a must read. Bernie Ecclestone, a longtime friend of Ted Macauley’s writes: “Mike the Bike-Again is a fitting salute to his everlasting presence in the minds of all of us who were fortunate enough to see him race-and to know him”.
To be in with a chance to win a copy of MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN answer the following question:
In which year did Mike Hailwood return to TT racing? Email your answer and your magazine area to: ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

VW CARAVELLE CAR REVIEW
It may look like a delivery van, but don’t be fooled, the VW Caravelle is a supreme people carrier with style and panache and plenty of disguised practicality. It ranks among the poshest of the posh mini-buses with a comfort level for seven people, however long their legs, giving them the spacious comfort of a living room three piece suite. And if your budget can stretch into Volkswagen’s asking price you will be rewarded with superb value for your hard-earned. The huge Caravelle, based on and developed as a descendant from the legendary and iconic Camper, is a VW with a status reaching far above that of a van with widows. It is a unique and distinctive crowd carrier with handy cabin facilities to cope cosily with a full house of travellers. If I am sounding like an enthusiast then, great, I’m getting the crucial message across. I have to say VW’s splendid reputation for meeting the needs and requirements of the fussiest customers is personified...yet again...in this oh-so-carefully considered and developed offering to its long-established fan base as well as being a lure to newcomers to the painstaking brand. It ain’t cheap, but it offers unrivalled space and versatility for the family gathering, including all their belongings and luggage in 775-litre load bay, and looking for economy and elbow room on the move. It is the perfect runaround with huge side windows that offer panoramic views for the lucky passengers. From
a driver’s standpoint, seated nice and high with great cinemascopic views, the punchy engines like the 2.0-litre TDI, with its seven gears auto box, ensures it has swift and smooth acceleration. It has all the trimmings and helps you would hope for and expect in a Volkswagen, including dials, five inch touch screen, digital radio and switches you’d recognise from the tried and tested Golf. Three climate control settings, tinted rear windows and roller blinds, help maintain a relaxed and comfortable coolness in the vast cabin. The second row of seats are swivelling captain’s chairs and adaptable enough for that area to revel into a lounge-like atmosphere. To add to the convenience and party mood for the passengers there is an optional folding table or shelves to create a bed for a nod-off. If you fancy, and you are on a house move or you have tons of Christmas shopping, you can remove all the seats and convert the spacious carrier into a van.Second thoughts - it would be just as well to slide the back end bench forwards to create the necessary space. If you are looking for a practical carrier with an enviable comfort zone and you have the readies to fork out then go for it. The Caravelle is a winner. Upper class. Specification: Price range £39,049-£51,579. My choice, the 2.0TDFI.Executive DSG. Power:150bhp. 0-62mph in 13.0 secs. MPG 47.1. Price £45,747. Warranty: three years unlimited mileage. By Ted Macauley

SHE IS FIERCE Brave, bold and beautiful, poems by women. She is Fierce is a collection of inspiring poems written by women that span the decades, well centuries, actually. There is a richness to this collection of poems. They examine love, loss, nature, body image, friendship, mental health, resistance, joy; well life really. The poets are all ages, young and old, from various periods of our past and present and from all walks of life: Sojourner Truth, a slave, civil rights campaigner and so much more. Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple and another civil rights campaigner. Imtiaz Dhakar, a self professed Scottish Muslim Calvinist, artist and documentary maker. Farmer’s daughters, artists, lawyers, kitchen maids, aristocracy, accountants, a medieval visionary, online superstar and a microbiologist are just a few of the other walks of life that these women come from. It gives this collection of poems a depth and range of interest previously unseen. There is truly something for everyone. What makes this particular collection of poems stand out for me, is that it satisfies my unending curiosity about the story behind the story! At the back of this book is a section of short biographies about each author. I was able to read about them all and it gave me a window into their world that gave me a greater understanding of the their poems, what they meant and why they were written. This book is brought to us by Ana Sampson who is the author of many bestselling anthologies. Ana’s ‘day job’ is as a book publicist and she has worked with authors including Norman Wisdom, John Barrowman and Sir

Roger Moore as well as brands including Wagamama and Green & Black’s Chocolate, on fiction campaigns and also on quirky bestsellers including Norwegian Wood and Where’s the Meerkat? Her first anthology, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud... And other poems you half remember from school, was published in 2009 and was the number 3 poetry bestseller that year. Four other anthologies followed. One day she looked for an anthology of poems by women to buy, assuming she’d be spoilt for choice, but discovered only rather niche titles: women’s war poems, or 19th Century women’s poems. There was nothing general that covered all eras. She decided to fill the gap herself! The result is She Is Fierce! She live in Ashtead with her husband, two small daughters and two demanding cats, and says she loves living in Surrey! Ana can often be seen cycling on Ashtead Common with her family (not the cats, though!) She enjoys getting out into the countryside (as well as enjoying pub lunches in some of Surrey’s wonderful pubs!) Ana will be talking about her book at events including the Henley Literary Festival on 4th October(with poets Nikita Gill and Deborah Alma) https:// henleyliteraryfestival.co.uk/hlf-event-system/she-isfierce-brave-bold-beautiful-poems-by-women/ and Guildford Literary Festival on 10th October (with poet Polly Clark) http://www.guildfordbookfestival. co.uk/poetryevent/ Ana’s book is available from Waterstones and all good bookshops.

A BRIEF PLUNGE INTO BRIDGE HISTORY Who invented the 4-5 No Trump Slam Bidding System?
Coincidentally, we have two Bridge related features this month; this first piece was sent to us by Look Local reader Mr Clive Craig-Mile If like me, you know nothing about this popular card game, you might find this all rather intriguing! If however, you are ‘in the know’ I’m sure it will be extremely informative!
Who invented the 4-5 No Trump Slam Bidding System? If your reaction to this question was ‘That’s an easy one - Mr Blackwood, of course’ I’m afraid you’re going to have to think again! The correct answer is Mr Ely Culbertson, and here’s the proof :In his introduction to Culbertson’s Contract Bridge Complete, Albert Morehead, a leading authority on the history Bridge, wrote - ‘Culbertson first had the idea of using the 4-5 No Trump level to show Aces. He published it in 1933. The first manuscript in which Mr. Easley Blackwood set forth his own theories presented them as ‘a development based on Culbertson’s new idea.’ I know, because Blackwood sent me that manuscript in 1934 for publication in The Bridge World.
40 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
Another revolution introduced by Culbertson as early as 1923 was the bidding of four-card suits… I certainly hadn’t taken onboard that until that time the minimum biddable suit had to have five cards in it. Some people maintained that even a five-card suit should possess at least one quick trick. Mr Wilbur Whitehead wrote at the time that ‘ the introduction of four-card suit-bids is the greatest development of modern bridge.’ Amongst other salient Culbertson innovations were:Forcing Bids (1927-28), including the overcall in the opponents’ suit; the discovery of the importance of distribution; keeping the bidding low at the start - previously, believe it or not, the object had been to keep the bidding high so that opponents couldn’t overcall; the Honour-Trick Table, which gave quicktrick importance to lower Honours, down to Jacks and Tens; the One -over one (1928), which was the first in his list of Forcing Bids. (Theodore Lightner thought up the name of this bid, but Culbertson thought of it first) Even Contract Bridge’s very vocabulary is riddled with Culbertson’s terms, such as limit bids, asking bids, forcing bids, balanced and unbalanced distribution, to name a few. Quite a legacy! By Mr Clive Craigmile.
FIRST SATURDAY SAFARI! Esher Café Bridge raises over £2,000 for Homeless Charity – Elmbridge Rentstart!
Esher’s pavements and restaurants were alive once again on a bright Saturday in August with the participants of Safari Bridge as it hosted its third Café Bridge event! Building on the success of the previous events, teams of Hippos and Kudus descended on Esher on a sizzling August afternoon to enjoy duplicate bridge in some of its wonderful restaurants. Putting on an event of this nature, which was held in aid of Elmbridge Rentstart, requires a huge amount of goodwill, and local restaurants and businesses demonstrated this in spades by generously providing not only space to play the bridge but also delicious food at lunchtime. Participating restaurants were The Bear, Brouge and the Siam Food Gallery. A raffle was held in The Bear with prizes generously donated by many local businesses, including James Neave the Estate Agent in Walton-on-Thames. The afternoon was a great success, raising over £2,000. Elmbridge Rentstart is the nominated charity of Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Shweta Kapadia. Rentstart, based in Walton-on-Thames have housed 150 local people in the last year. Not only does the charity house vulnerable people, they also support their clients to move on in life and get back into work, training and education. Cllr Kapadia, who is pictured below at the cheque presentation in the Bear and is herself a keen bridge player, said: “I have really enjoyed this Saturday Safari - Café Bridge event. Not only did I have a fun day out, but I was able
to raise awareness of homelessness and the great work Elmbridge Rentstart does. I am delighted that the event has raised over £2000 for the Charity which I have chosen to support in my Mayoral Year. So many think homelessness doesn’t happen here in Elmbridge, but it does and I am very proud to be leading the campaign of awareness about the Elmbridge Rentstart’s work. I was delighted to see so many players supporting the raffle which has led to such a great donation to the charity. My thanks to the organisers, volunteers, restaurants and all who participated.” Elmbridge Rentstart Chief Executive, Helen Watson on hearing the total raised said: “We are very grateful to the team of volunteers who made this event such a success: Louise Pilcher, Jenny Parsons and Jackie Waller and not forgetting Victor Lesk - the brains behind the event! The total raised was beyond our expectation and will make a transformational difference to local people experiencing homelessness.” This donation of £2,000 could pay towards two local people who are currently sleeping rough to have a safe place to live and receive expert support to help them get their lives back on track. Last year Rentstart helped over 60 people to find work, transforming lives for the long term. Café Bridge is a unique style of bridge, a concept devised on the continent, and which is taking off in the London area. Events of this scale are enabled by our phone app-based scoring system, “BriAn”, which accumulates results from all the restaurants and allows players to follow their position in real time.

ESHER Summer is always busy for Surrey Libraries and Esher Library is no exception. We saw numerous students using our facilities as they revised for the major exams. They will have received their results and many will be off to experience a different life at university. Children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge enjoying the opportunity to read six books of their own choice! We held several craft session where children made Dennis the Menace skateboards, Dream Catchers and Super Hero masks. We had visits from the Little Sparrows Nursery who came in small groups over the period of a week. The children were able to learn about using the library, listen to some stories and indulge in a little craftwork. If you work for a nursery or school and wish to bring a group of children to visit Esher Library, please do contact us by emailing esher.library@surreycc.gov.uk. We are now able to confirm the details of our Surrey Libraries Crime Festival event mentioned in the last edition of Looklocal. Body in the Library Crime festival runs from 29/10/18 to 30/11/18 and libraries are holding events in various locations throughout Surrey. Crime writer Daniel Pembrey, author of the Henk Van Der Pol mysteries will be here at Esher Library, discussing how location is an essential element in fiction and how crime fiction in particular can offer a rich guide to foreign locations. Maximising audience participation, he will cater to readers and any aspiring writers, sharing insights that he has gained from his journey as a full time professional writer. He has also contributed articles for the Financial Times, County Life and The Sunday Times. Daniel will be at Esher Library on Wednesday 21 November, 7.30-8.30pm.
