10 Welcome to October
Here we, are heading into Autumn; school routines are getting established again and half term is just around the corner. And what a very strange year this continues to be. Obviously, the virus is causing disruption to our normal routines, and worry the world over, but I think it’s quite amazing how adaptable we humans are. The majority of us have, even if in a begrudging way, adapted to new ways of life, different shopping routines, the wearing of a face mask in public places, and certainly different working set ups, and on the whole, an altogether more local way of life.

Many have discovered new or forgotten hobbies and past-times; cooking, baking and gardening are amongst the most popular I believe, and having such wonderful, local suppliers and services has never been so helpful and appreciated. We remain thankful to all the key workers who continue to help us through these weird times; all the NHS staff, the many different delivery services, from post to prescriptions, our teachers, the police and fire services, paramedics and carers…. so many amazing people who selflessly carry on regardless, providing much needed services to help the rest of us, but also the shop owners and workers for the service they provide for our communities.

And in support of everyone, the very least we can do is remember “HANDS / FACE / SPACE” So let’s all continue to do our part, and we will get thought this together! There are not many local events taking place at the moment BUT if you do plan to go along to any advertised meetings, please do call ahead of time to confirm if they are still taking place. Things can change on an almost daily basis. I hope you all have a good month, and do keep well, Best Regards,

poached pear ghosties ingredients method 1 lemon 1 vanilla pod, halved lengthways 500g granulated sugar 4 Waitrose Conference Pears 100g fresh raspberries 8 small dried blueberries (Serves 4)
1. Pare the zest from the lemon and squeeze the juice. Place in a medium saucepan with the vanilla pod, sugar and 1 litre of water then bring to a gentle simmer. 2. Peel the pears, removing a slice from the bottom so they can stand upright. Add the pears to the pan and simmer for 20 minutes then turn off the heat, leave to cool completely then chill until you are ready to serve. 3. When ready, place the raspberries on 4 small serving plates and mash with a fork until pulpy. Press 2 blueberries into each pear for the eyes then sit the pears on the raspberry pulp. Spoon over a little of the cooking syrup and serve.
cooking tip Make sure the pears are completely submerged in the liquid so they poach evenly – add a little more water as needed.

Get more active, more often, your way During lockdown, lots of us have all come to realise how important exercise is to look after our physical and mental health. Keeping healthy has never been more important. Elmbridge Borough Council is launching a public consultation from 15 September to 31 October to inform their new Physical Activity Strategy for 2021-2026. The strategy will aim to tackle inactivity across the borough and focus on the wider benefits of regular exercise and participation in physical activity. It is important for us to gather residents’ views on what factors prevent them from exercising. We can then try and break down existing inactivity barriers and identify long-term, sustainable solutions to address the root of the problem. Help us to give everybody the opportunity to get fitter and healthier, doing activities they enjoy and that can easily fit in their everyday lives. Share your views on what would motivate you to become more active.
We are particularly keen to hear from people who are from BAME communities, people with a long-term health condition or disability, people who are over 50 and people who would consider themselves as currently inactive. This 5-year strategy is not about trying to engage inactive individuals in competitive ‘sport’ but rather inviting them to move more and more often to improve their physical health and mental wellbeing.
Please let us have your opinions and ideas: complete our onlin ne survey at elmbridge.gov.uk/sport for a chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher h If you would like to take part in our virtual focus groups and group discussions, please call 01372 474581 or email health@elmbridge.gov.uk. We would love to hear from you.

ON THE HORIZON?
With Christmas being on the horizon and the possibility of long term home working and/or home schooling, now is a great time to take stock of some of the new innovations and how transformative they may be in the future. Just remember it wasn’t that long ago when we thought the use of the webcam was for the occasional Christmas or Birthday greeting call! The two big game console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft have been polishing off their new arrivals, at the same time the major PC component manufacturers have been working hard, with one of the major announcements being the true high performance graphics card line which will provide really spectacular realism in 4K graphics, with the arrival of the GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card, with an indicated price of less than £500.00, this really will permit the PC to be the machine for all activities. If you are being limited by the range of your wifi internet connection, there is a new Mesh wifi range extender which can be installed in seconds and expanded to
provide coverage in the largest of properties, the Deco range offer an affordable and versatile solution which can be expanded to suit your needs as they evolve. With the increase in home working, we have been very active in providing network and internet solutions for garden offices and cabins. Pretty well every installation is different, so if you would like to discuss your situation we probably have an very effective solution for you. Some products like webcam, headsets, laptops, tablets and home printers are still on limited availability, with availability being patchy until the New Year. Whatever your requirements are please call us as you may be surprised by what we can do and provide. Stay safe and we look forward to being of service to you.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON LOCKDOWN A moth flew out of my lipstick I wasn’t really surprised I hadn’t used it for ages Being unable to socialize. I’ve spent more time in the garden The roses are doing well, But thanks to all that weeding My knees are giving me hell!

“It’s said that All Hallows’ Eve is one of the nights when the veil between the worlds is thin – and whether you believe in such things or not, those roaming spirits probably believe in you, or at least acknowledge your existence, considering that it used to be their own. Even the air feels different on Hallowe’en, autumn-crisp and bright.” ~ Erin Morgenstern
As the car sat in the garage The battery unfortunately died, But the RAC gave me a new one And now I can go for a ride. As I climbed into the driver’s seat I said a little prayer, It really was a relief to find The gears were still all there! Restrictions are being lifted But I have little urge to roam To visit pubs or make long trips After weeks spent safe at home. But today I decided to venture out Unsure and a bit on edge, Just down the road to local shops To buy some meat and veg. After three months in isolation This meant a change of gear, To go along a familiar route And conquer that initial fear. I’m glad I made the effort To step out of my comfort zone, I really did enjoy the change Before returning home. So with tentative steps now taken What should I be doing next? “Hasten Slowly” I think’s the answer, And I trust it’s for the best. Marion Kemp July 2020

RESHAPING LOST LETTERS our flagship project for 2020
Lost Letters is a community heritage project to engage people across Surrey with their local history through a partnership with Surrey History Centre and the rich archives they hold. It highlights the universality of our experiences as residents of Surrey by bringing to life the lives and experiences of our predecessors and asking for a response, by letter or through visual arts, from current residents, who will be invited to take part. It will culminate in a book, touring exhibition and an online legacy, displaying the original letters alongside some contemporary responses. Most people can relate to the key experiences and phases of life - childhood, school, love, parenting, friends, work, home, holidays, loss, celebrations - and this project will share them through the medium of letters, bringing to life some personal heritage of the people of Surrey and illustrating its importance, value and relevance for people living in Surrey today.
Collections explored include • The frank and engaging letters of Lady Mary Wallis to her friend Mary Turner that cover all aspects of living life in Surrey whilst raising a family and being married to the engineer Sir Barnes Wallis. “May’s twins have arrived - well but rather feeble. George was 4lb and John 3¾. They have already been christened as they are so weakly. They are true twins made of one ovum. They won’t suck but have to have food dropped into their mouths.” • The evacuee letters of Vera Daws who was billeted from Ewell to York and writes to her family and friends to share her experiences. • The love story of Frank and Isabel Baker of
18 LookLocal - OCTOBER 2020
Mitcham who were lifelong labour supporters and committed socialists but whose relationship was strained by WW2 WW W and Isabel’s politics moving towards communism “I thought I didn’t mind you being a Communist as long as you were genuinely convinced it was right.” • The letters of Herbert Henry Bowerman, a private in the trenches during WW1 WW W “I feel awfully weak some days, but they say it is no use going to the doctor unless you are nearly dead”.
• 10 online Lost Letters creative challenges that anyone can take part in; available here www.itsnotyourbirthdaybut.com • A buddy system at the Royal Star & Garter home where volunteers team up with residents to discuss the letters and memories and thoughts prompted by them in a 1-1 online weekly meeting; this has been very successful at keeping residents engaged and connected and part of a project they can meaningfully contribute to. One resident commented that the project has opened her world and her mind and that “it is an absolute delight being taken out of this isolated world by discussing the past and the present, it is keeping me sane!”
• The creation of inspiration boxes by our team of artists that bring the letter writers to life; they can be used as postal packages or virtual packages online to inspire written, audio or visual responses • A Mundane Memoirs challenge with www.64millionartists.com; a lot of the letters, particularly from the war periods, reference how mundanity and the everyday can help overcome uncertainty and fear at difficult times. We invited the 64 Million Artists network to contribute a 10 x 10 cm square each to reflect something mundane they had done in lockdown to help them get through it. We had over 200 artworks submitted, which will all come together to form one mass artwork. The challenge was extended with www ww ww. w koestlerarts.org.uk offering it to all UK prisoners as part of their Art Aid in-cell packs.
• Online workshops with the halow group exploring a range of themes stimulated by the letters including Technology in Lockdown and I Love This Because… an exploration of the objects that we love and why they are special to us LookLocal - OCTOBER 2020 19

PUZZLE SOLUTIONS PAGE 32 49 LookLocal - OCTOBER 2020 23
I have been rocketed back down Memory Lane with the exciting revelation that the legendary Lamborghini makers of stand-out extra-special cars are in the process of raiding the super-car market with a breathtaking 200mph Lambo Huracan. Wow-wee! The latest model, priced at £180,840,will definitely glamourise my garage if I win top prize on the pools or benefit from an inheritance from a long lost millionaire relative. Okay it’s a whopping price - but measured against rivals in the mind-blowing supercar range it is, in my humble opinion, great value for your lolly. The model I owned in the 70’s was the Espada, a vividly scarlet four-seat GT Coupe, a target for the gawpers and the envy of all my pals - and plenty of strangers, too. It was my transport to Europe’s F1 venues, when I was covering Grand Prix racing for a national newspaper. And it made light work of the autoroutes, in utter comfort and blistering responses to my right foot demands, and as steady and safe as houses. Thirsty, though! But I didn’t care. It was too much of a pleasure to worry about its gulping ways. The latest version, the Huracan, is a jaw dropper. 202 mph, 0-62 in 3.3 seconds, its 602 bhp engine and a real wail of noise from its 5.2_litre power unit at 8,000 rpm. Fuel consumption, should you be bothered to worry about, varies between 20mpg and 11.5mpg when you hoof it on the motorways, or free-to-go-for it stretches on the Continent. If you are not satisfied with its pace, all you have
to do is drop down a gear or two in its seven-speed box and withstand being forced back into your seat, as the beast rears it head and roars away - but with complete steadiness and sureness. A real confidence boost. There are front and rear parking sensors to dodge any bumps during parking and keep the scratches at bay, priced at £1,350 and because you can’t see much out of the back you can buy a rear view camera for £1,440. But I would not bother with the £2520 sound package because when the car is on the go, and the decibles are high, it is a waste of money. Oh, and by the way, the Huracan’s pretty and eyecatching spectacular, but extraordinary paint job with a matt-blue finish and blindingly bright red hood, would set you back £11,250. All in all, if you go along with every one of the considerable number of extras offered you could run up a final bill of £229,536..... From a practical viewpoint the car is superbly turned out with a perfectly balanced chassis, which tightens its line if you lift off the accelerator, but it still gives you enough grip at the rear end to boost your confidence and trust in its behaviour. I don’t know what his response was, if ever he drove it, but Pope Francis was given one as a prezzie. But I would bet he would enjoy a hymn or two on the car’s ultra-wonderful sound system. There was a spell when Lambos left a bit to be desired in contrast with rival supercars - but not any more. Not with this beauty...
Happy Motoring!

Book Reviews OCTOBER 2020
You Will Never Be Forgotten by Mary South (Haperback £12.99) I loved the imagination, insight and pitch-black humour in these short stories. Mary South plays with the possible roles of technology in our future, the emotional and very human challenges of trying to augment our lives in new ways. I loved the way she mingles the real and already-present influence of technology, from telephones to brain surgery, with situations yet to be experienced. Can our slowly evolved minds keep up with these radical leaps into the future?
The Outlaw Ocean by Ian Urbina (paperback £9.99) This is a riveting tour of the hidden crimes and dramas on the world’s oceans. Ian Urbina spent five years, including three at sea, investigating the stories of trafficking, exploitation, illegal fishing, and many other dangerous games being played out on the open seas. He travels to nations and within organisations trying to redress the damage being done, from tiny countries like Palau fighting against illegal shark fin fishing in their territory, Sea Shepherd’s high-risk, high-speed chases in Antarctic waters, and those trying to rescue the many people trapped into slavery. A fascinating, important and astonishing book.
Flavour by Yotam Ottolengi (hardback £27) Yotam is back with ‘Flavour’, solely dedicated to vegetables. ‘Flavour’ takes Ottolenghis’s trademark style of vegetable cooking to the next level and dives into flavour combinations that let individual ingredients shine and enhance one another. The book is broken down into three sections, Process, Pairing and Produce. It is easy to follow and the results are amazing whether you consider yourself a good chef or a good family cook. Flavour is also beautiful, from the cover to all the sumptuous glossy photos of the recipes. A fantastic gift to treat yourself, or as a sumptuous gift for someone at Christmas.

Inspiration!
I heard recently of a famous rock star who used to pay someone to push him on stage. He loved performing but at the last moment, flooded by the feeling of absolute fear, he would think, “Oh my God, I can’t do this”. And then the guy whose job it was, would push him on stage. The rock star would start to strum his guitar. He would feel great. And the concert would take off. I’ve also heard of many people who, on some crazy impulse, agree to go skydiving with friends. They report staying awake the night before the jump, wondering why on earth they had said “Yes”, and spending the night imagining falling to their death. But the next day, invariably, something strange happens. One minute, they’re paralysed by fear as they stand in the open doorway of the plane at 14,000 feet, watching the lights go from red to amber to green, listening to the countdown “3 … 2 …”. Then the instructor they’re strapped to for the tandem jump pushes them off the plane. A second later they’re in freefall, face down, seeing the immense beauty of the earth beneath them, feeling the rush of air around them - and the fear has totally gone. People describe it as the most beautiful experience of their entire life. Just think about it. Had they not been pushed, that moment of fear could have kept them from the most beautiful experience of their life. Researchers have shown that fear is an interpretation by the mind of certain physical sensations: increase in heart rate, sweaty palms, fast shallow breathing, butterflies in the tummy - the very same sensations we feel when we’re excited! It’s not the situation that’s the problem: it’s our mind and how it perceives the situation. If we allow 30 LookLocal - OCTOBER 2020
ourselves to catastrophise, we’ll experience fear. If we understand that we’re actually safe, we’re free to interpret the sensations as excitement. Think of theme park rides! If our goals or dreams don’t scare us, they’re not big enough. When you set your heart on achieving something that gets your heart racing, you’ll know you’re on the right track. Instead of thinking “I could never …” ask yourself “What do I need in order to …?” Who do you have in your life who pushes you to do great things, who encourages and keeps you going when you lose heart or courage? Some of us are lucky enough to have family or friends who do that. For others, that’s what they get from their coach – the support to break past the fear barrier into bigger, better things. What would you be capable of with a little support, and maybe even a push?

music ON THE GREEN
Lunchtime Concerts Christ Church, Esher
Wednesday 21st Oct 2020 FLAUGUISSIMO DUO Yu-Wei Hu – Baroque Flute Johan Lofving – Theorbo Georgian London was a cosmopolitan paradise for lucky artists and to the young Swedish musician, Johan Helmich Roman, it must have seemed the centre of the world. The Swedish monarch commissioned him to bring back the latest musical trends. Roman arrived in London in 1715 and learned from the very finest masters. He also worked in Handel’s orchestra where he earned the nickname “The Swedish Virtuoso.” The Duo offer us a musical feast from the buzzing theatres and coffee bars of Georgian London! Their programme will include music by Roman himself, Handel and other composers of the period. To keep everyone safe social distancing, wearing of face masks and other Covid 19 precautions will apply. Unfortunately, the current restrictions prevent us from serving lunch or refreshments. Advance booking not necessary. The event will be available on YouTube (MOTG Esher) Free admission, retiring collection, online donations via www.justgiving.com/campaign/MOTG For further info please contact the Parish Office:
