A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary. • A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can
typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

C laygate D ram ARSENIC & OLD LACE
Brings Back Special Memories Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy that Tony Wall has long wanted to bring to Claygate for a very special reason. He himself, as a young actor, appeared in the play on the West End stage in the Sixties, alongside the great Dame Sybil Thorndike and a young Richard Briers. Tony is directing Claygate Dramatic Society’s spring production of Joseph Kesselring’s classic comedy thriller - but hopes that some of the antics of the great star in that Vaudeville Theatre show will not be repeated. It was an experience Tony is not likely to forget. Sybil Thorndike and her co-star Athene Seyler were fond of playing tricks on the rest of the cast. Being the highly experienced and professional actresses they were, they were able to go off-script at will, an ability that sometimes had their fellow actors in a spin. He recalls how Richard Briers would come off stage sweating profusely after one particular scene in which the pair would mischievously throw him ad lib lines, forcing him to come up with suitable responses. The play centres around two old ladies, the Brewsters, who, out of the kindness of their hearts, help lonely old men to their demise to end their suffering. Their activities are discovered by their horrified nephew
Mortimer. But his attempts to bring sense to the household are complicated by his batty brother Teddy, who thinks he is Theodore Roosevelt, and the unwelcome appearance of his other brother Jonathan, a thoroughly unsavoury character of a highly criminal bent. Bodies and poison abound and it is all Mortimer can do to keep everything hushed up while policemen pop in and out of the house at will, making for a highly entertaining evening. The Vaudeville production holds a special memory for Tony when he was also at the receiving end of Sybil Thorndike’s mischief. One day, his wife Sue had been rushed to hospital with suspected meningitis, meaning that he only just got to the theatre in time for his first appearance. He played one of the policemen, whose wife was ill and in whom the old ladies took a special interest. On his entrance, Sybil Thorndike sat him on a sofa centre stage - not in the script - and proceeded to ask after his wife, meaning his real wife. He had to come up with answers as she plied him with questions, all the while trying to keep in character. Once she was satisfied, the actress switched back to the script and gave Tony his cue as he mentally wiped his brow. “It must have only lasted about a minute and a half,” he says, “but it felt like two hours!”

‘The Seven Ages of Tax Planning’
We ran a client seminar which included a section on tax planning opportunities over a lifetime, or ‘The Seven Ages of Tax Planning’. We looked at seven stages of life: child, adult, spouse, employee, business-owner, property-owner and testator as each has its own blend of tax-planning opportunities and, of course, pitfalls. We intend looking at each stage in more detail over future months, but for now here is a very brief overview. • Children have full personal tax allowances the same as any adult, but they frequently go to waste. They can be utilised by income from trust funds set up by grandparents, or by a parent but then only through a will. • Adults can use the tax-favoured investments (ISAs, pension contributions and EISs and VCTs) to shelter income from tax and use gift aid to make tax-efficient charitable donations. • Spouses and civil partners, generally pay less tax if their incomes are roughly equal. Transferring assets or employing your spouse in your business can help here.
• For employees almost everything they receive is taxable so it is important to look at the few exceptions. Company pension contributions are likely to be the largest, but there are also company cars (or mileage allowances), childcare vouchers and employee share schemes. • Owners of businesses face the biggest tax question in terms of structure – limited company, partnership, LLP or sole trader. The best one for tax purposes can be different in each case. The results in terms of taxes on income can be significant, but there are also partial reliefs from capital gains tax and even full reliefs from inheritance tax for the correct structure. • For the property owner the most significant relief is the capital gains tax exemption for your main residence. If you have more than one residence (owned or rented) this can become very complex with tax opportunities available, but also traps for the unwary. • A testator has considerable opportunities for tax planning through a will both to save inheritance tax on their estate and to put the family in a position to save tax over a long period by the correct structure of gifts.

Windows XP and Office 2003
RETIRES IN DAYS On April 8th 2014, Windows XP and Office 2003 ‘retires’. If you are a Windows XP or Office 2003 user, what will it mean for you? The simple answer is that you will no longer receive Microsoft updates, security fixes, assistance or support concerning Windows XP and Office 2003, but the copy of the software on your computer will continue to work: it will not suddenly turn off and cease to work.
Is that a big deal? On the surface, not really. However, because your XP computer will become a less secure device, some companies have stated that they will not allow Windows XP to connect to their secure websites. This could impact any website that has a shopping basket or secure sign, be it your bank, building society, ebay, PayPal, supermarket , Government/ tax office, this list goes on. Due to the lack of updates and increasing security risk, some commentators have stated it will become a hackers’ paradise, as they will be finding more ways to penetrate your system with little to stop them. The ramifications could be massive: you will leave yourself venerable to hackers and risks. If you have a machine which is 4 or more years old, we would urge you to replace it; if your machine is less than 4 years old, you can buy a replacement Windows 7 or Windows 8 which will provide you with the most up-to-date supported and secure product.
The cost of the new version operating system starts at £95.00 for Windows 7. If you are taking this opportunity to upgrade your system, we can provide you with a service to copy all your existing data, information, emails, music, photos, shortcuts, internet favourites and so on to a new machine. We can even send an engineer round to your premises with the new equipment and install and set up the system, making the transition as simple as possible. Should you not wish to embrace the latest Windows 8 software, we do have stocks of Windows 7 machines too.

WILDLIFE GARDENS Wildlife gardens have a bad reputation and often consist of a tangled mess of weeds or a layout in the shape of butterfly wings! It doesn’t have to be like that and gardens can be designed to work as practical and beautiful spaces for people and can still be great for wildlife too. Award-winning garden designer Selina Botham shares her top tips for creating a successful ‘designer wildlife garden’:1. Design a garden that you will like and enjoy being in. Don’t worry if you like a well-structured space: the bees don’t mind about the layout or design, they just want plenty to eat and somewhere to rest. 2. Preserve mature trees and shrubs and even plant some more to give a variety of blossom and berries. Something in flower in each season is a great bonus for wildlife and for you too. 3. Be relaxed about your lawn (I know this is hard for many men!). If you have a ‘chemical-free’ lawn, you don’t need to worry about children playing on it and you get the added benefit of some very pretty wildflowers and of course lots of happy insects and birds. 4. Design in meadow areas. Long grass is beautiful and adds romantic texture in the garden. It’s also great for wildlife, especially if you leave it long in the winter. 5. Brighten your garden with flowers that provide nectar. This is easy, as most flowers produce nectar, so don’t worry about choosing only those with special labels, just avoid doubles and
heavily in-bred annual bedding plants (annual bedding, while pretty, only lasts a few months ,so it’s much better to buy perennials that last several years). 6. Create a pond or have a birdbath or a natural water feature. Keep the water clean by using oxygenating plants rather than chemicals. 7. Use cut logs, either set into the ground as a sculpture or stacked under a bench or as a feature in their own right. I use a sculptor to create natural works of art that are beautiful and also useful for wildlife. 8. Have a compost heap/messy space where you can pile leaves and garden waste. This makes life easier for you and benefits the environment too. Designing for wildlife is good for you and does others good too! Selina’s own garden is designed for people and wildlife and is opened to the public under the NGS June 7th and June 15th www.ngs.org.uk If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina Botham for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uK.

THE BAKER’S DAUGHTER
The daughter of a well-known Weybridge baker is to have her family’s tea shop tales and recipes published in a baking memoir by Pan Macmillan. Louise Johncox grew up helping her father, Peter, run his bakery & tea room, Peter’s, on Church Street, Weybridge. The tea room was a staple in Weybridge life and was known for its homely and nostalgic 1940s style and fittings until its closure in 2000.
of 2007, Louise decided to follow her father’s advice to get “her hands messy” and Peter set out to teach her to bake for the first time. Sadly, Peter died in April 2012 as Louise was still learning from him. This final period spent with her father had a special value to her: “Looking back, the experience of baking with my father brought me closer to him and taught me far more than just the recipes from the shop. I learned a lot about his life and my mother’s life and marvelled at the success they had with Peter’s and a long marriage of over 50 years.” Although Peter had been surprised that Louise was writing about the tea shop for her Ph.D, he had offered his full support, frequently asking “how’s the book going?” Although he did not live to see the book published by Pan Macmillan, Louise is sure that he would have been contented: “Family members have said how proud he would have been to know that all the hard work I had put into the book over so many years led to two published versions.” The book already has its endorsements: Louise’s mother Frankie, who had worked as the “welcoming face of the shop” and now in her 70s, has become a keen baker after testing the recipes along with other family members and friends. The chef, Albert Roux, has written the foreword. With the book finally released, Louise herself is “letting all the ideas bake” for the next. The Baker’s Daughter by Louise Johncox is published by Pan Macmillan and is available from all good book shops & retailers for £20. For more information, see: http://www.panmacmillan.com/book/ louisejohncox/thebakersdaughter
Written by: Henry Turner
Louise’s book, aptly named The Baker’s Daughter, is part-cookbook, part-family history, and catalogues recipes going back generations to Louise’s ancestors on the Swiss-Italian border, as well as nostalgic remembrances of life in the tea room. Each chapter is tied to a facet of life in the shop with an accompanying narrative, and includes recipes grouped by theme, such as children’s cakes, classic tea shop cakes and European pastries. All are complemented with related anecdotes and descriptions, as well as stories about individual customers. Many wrote to Louise expressing fond memories “for the handcrafted cakes and chocolates and the warm family atmosphere created in the tea room”. Louise’s work on the project began in 2007 when she was participating in a writing workshop and decided to write about her childhood in the family tea room: “I was partly inspired by the book, Toast, written by food writer Nigel Slater. I was struck by the fact that he formed stories about his childhood through food.” The idea had merit and when starting a Ph.D in Creative Writing, Louise got to work writing a 60,000 word manuscript. Looking to expand the work to include her family’s unique recipes, she quickly received a shock when she discovered that her father hadn’t recorded them in detail. Louise therefore took it upon herself to do so with her retired father. It became quickly apparent that formally interviewing Peter with a dictaphone wasn’t a substitute for practical experience. Despite their ancestry and family heritage, none of Peter’s children had opted to follow their father’s footsteps into baking. So in the autumn
COTTAGE INDUSTRY Lacking space and having decided moving house was not an option, Gemma and Sach Gholap chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to transform their pretty Victorian cottage in Teddington. Gemma reflects, “We knew we couldn’t stay in this house unless we made it bigger. We looked around but it is just so expensive to move.” After getting the loft converted two years in, they had waited another six months before they felt ready to tackle the ground floor extension. Gemma comments “We knew we needed lots of light coming in and used the same architect who had done the loft to draw up plans.”
Attention then turned to choosing a builder.
“We got loads of quotes from local companies and went to see two or three jobs from the top ones. The jobs we looked at from L&E looked really good, and people couldn’t say enough nice things about the team.” The
comprehensive payment plan L&E provided also helped. “When the quotes came back, L&E’s was more detailed, so we could be really clear on
what we were getting for the money.” L&E’s team began to dig the foundations for the new extension in a cold, snowy January. Once footings were complete, the team moved inside, and soon after, Gemma and Sach sensibly decided to move in with friends for a month. They kept in close contact with the site foreman, however. “We had regular meetings
and he was really good at keeping us updated with progress. Once a week, we would sit down and agree what was happening and what we needed to buy next,” Gemma remembers. With the major building work complete, the team moved onto the second phase of the project. “We had a clear vision of what we wanted and we’d come along and discuss it with the foreman to work out the best options. My husband is a perfectionist and so they knew it had to be exactly right,” Gemma remembers. “The foreman was great. There was always really good attention to detail and the finish was
really good.” Indeed, with cleverly defined zones, there is a seamless flow throughout the ground floor, and the oasis of calm belies its role as the hub of the house. The kitchen rooflights mean the ground floor space is flooded with light and the modern bi-folding doors open out for an uninterrupted connection with the garden space. Instead of moving, the couple can now put down roots. It’s also worth reflecting on the cost of moving versus building an extension and the value that creates in your home. Gemma puts it simply – “We couldn’t afford to buy this now!” Mr and Mrs Gholap are so confident in recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

MEDICAL MATTERS!! HAVE YOU PLANNED YOUR HOLIDAY YET OR THINKING ABOUT TAKING A GAP YEAR & BACK PACKING?
An important part of your planning should be considering travel health issues. Complex travel (such as back packing, travelling across several countries or a trip lasting more than one month), especially with an unplanned itinerary, may require several weeks of repeated appointments to ensure all vaccinations are complete. Some vaccinations are available on the NHS free of charge; however, others are not and can be very costly. Make sure you are given a written record of vaccinations for your future reference. Other equally important issues to consider include taking out comprehensive travel insurance, especially for longer trips. Water and food hygiene are crucial to ensure your health is maintained while away. If you are unsure of your water source, bottled water is essential - for drinking and for cleaning teeth. Also beware of ice cubes in drinks. For areas where malaria is a problem, stringent care to avoid mosquito bites is paramount. Malaria mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, so if out and about at these times, best to cover up with long sleeves and trousers. Take an insect repellent with you (usually better than buying locally) which contains up to 50% DEET. Malaria tablets may need to be started up to three weeks before travel, so again, factor this into your plans. These are not available on the NHS and usually there is a charge for a private prescription and a further charge when collecting the tablets from the pharmacy.
Happy holidays and keep safe!

His programme, especially chosen for Holy Week, will include pieces by Scarlatti, Tchaikovsky and some 20th Century repertoire, inspired by the ruins of Dresden and the novels of Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
