Welcome to Essential Esher in February and our first issue of 2014!
10
It’s been full on here since the Christmas break, but we enjoyed catching up, following our little rest! We are now fully back in the swing and looking forward to the year ahead, which promises to be as hectic and fun packed as ever. So what do we have inside for you this month?
Well, one of the Premiership’s locally trained footie boys has turned his hand to writing childrens books. We catch up with Frank Lampard and see what it’s all about. I enjoyed a delicious meal at the Toby Cottage in Ripley. What a treat! Their strapline says ‘nostalgia with a modern face’ and it’ s certainly not wrong. This really is a fine restaurant. We also include many local notices, with news and events from a number of local contributors, as well as a wide selection of local businesses for your convenience.
Remember that we now cover four local areas: in addition to Essential Esher, there is Look Local Bookham, Look Local Cobham and The Weybridge Flyer. Our magazines are reaching 26 000 homes and businesses across these four areas, ten times a year! If you are looking for an effective, affordable way to advertise your business or service this year, please do give us call. We would be delighted to hear from you.

Fantastic news!
Planning permission has been granted for Bruce’s Doggy Day Care! The support from the local community, Bruce’s clients and local councillors was overwhelming. This played a huge part in achieving this positive result. The council was inundated with letters of support, with over 100 people writing in, some of whom didn’t even
own dogs but still supported the business! Elmbridge has attached a condition that the permission is only valid for Bruce Casalis and that should he stop using the land, it will revert to agricultural use, but the main headline is that the business can continue to operate their much-loved service.
For all those that supported Bruce,
thank you! 8

Blue is the colour,
Football is the game,
We’re all together And winning is our aim! There was much excitement in the air when I visited a local school in the area a little while ago! A very special visitor was due any minute and everyone was looking forward to meeting him! Frank Lampard, the Chelsea and England football player, was coming to tell the children about some books he has written recently.
Better known for his footwork and midfield talent, writing is a new venture for Frank and we were all interested to hear why he had decided to write a series of children’s books which actually are not about football, although they do centre around a magic football. The headteacher introduced Frank and welcomed him to the school.
Following this welcome chat, Frank started by reading aloud from his first book, then a selection of children followed him and read some more. The audience of children sat in silence; girls and boys alike were listening intently. Frank told us that he has two daughters who are 6 and 8. He said they were his inspiration to write his books. He told us that they both really enjoyed it when he told them his own made-up stories, their favourite being about a group of children who had all sorts of adventures centred around a magic football; there were no limits to what they could experience or who they meet or where they could go. It gave great scope for a whole array adventures, whilst capturing & nurturing their imaginations. Then Frank bravely invited the children to ask him some questions.
reading famous people’s biographies.
How long did it take you to write these books?
How many goals has he scored for Chelsea?
Frank said he actually started to put them together about 5 years ago.
Where did you write?
He said that he spends a fair bit of time travelling when playing different football matches and so he always took his note pad with him and jotted down various plots, so basically whenever he had some spare time.
Why did he write them?
This was partly to encourage his own and other children to read more, but also because it was something totally different from playing football which he thought would be great fun.
What other books had he read to his children?
Apparently, they really like Horrid Henry books and also a children’s book by David Walliams.
What sort of books does he like to read?
Frank said when he was at school he really liked learning about history, so he enjoys books about anything historical. He also enjoys
Which one of his books does he like the best? After a little thought, Frank decided Book 5 was his favourite so far!
Did he do the illustrations in the book as well?
He smiled broadly and said ‘No I didn’t, a gentleman named Mike Jackson from America did those for me.’
Does he want to go on and write more books?
Frank said yes, he definitely wants to write lots more adventures and continue with this series of books.
What’s it like being a footballer?
‘Brilliant’ came the answer. He said ‘It is really good fun but quite hard work making sure I keep as fit as possible.’ He said he has to make sure he gets enough sleep and that he eats well too. 207 goals for Chelsea! Frank was great with the children and everyone really enjoyed his visit. Afterwards, the head teacher asked him if he had any questions for the children. Much to everyones delight, he asked
Who is the strictest teacher?
There was a vast selection of answers to this, accompanied by much giggling, but actually no one was singled out (phew!)! There are currently five books in the series and Frank promises more to follow. The first five are entitled :• Frankie verses The Pirate Pillagers • Frankie verses The Rowdy Romans • Frankie verses The Cowboy Crew • Frankie verses The Mummy’s Menace • Frankie verses The Knight’s Nasties Thanks must go to the charming Frank Lampard for inviting Essential Esher to share this very special visit!

MAKING THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS Selina Botham is an award-winning garden designer based in Claygate, Surrey. Check out her website, Designsforallseasons.co.uk or facebook.co.uk/selina. botham for some recent garden transformations.
As we all know, connections are vital…. and in the case of houses and their gardens, there are good reasons for TWO well-known magazines making this connection in their titles. A house needs a garden, and a garden is often best when connected to a house. Creating a good connection between the house and garden will mean that you get the most out of both. Views are vital to the enjoyment of the house and there is little point investing in your garden if you can’t easily access it from key rooms in your house. Sometimes, it’s as simple as moving a badly placed table which creates a barrier, or it may be that new doors can give you much better access. An extension should always be considered in relation to the effect it will have on the total plot, considering views, light and space. I’m
often called in to help clients after their extension and to try and help improve the connections. I’ve seen key windows overlooking fences or doors opening towards a neighbour, when they would be better leading out towards a long view or a key feature in the garden. Worst of all, I’ve seen terraces added at the end of long, fraught house builds, which are so large and inhospitable that there is really nothing I can do to help. After the building is up and the terrace is down, there is often very little that can be done, so if you are planning an extension or a new house, do please plan the garden too. That way, views out from beautiful bi-fold doors can be designed to be uplifting and the garden can tempt you out, and be a sanctuary, not a headache. www.designsforallseasons.co.uk www.ngs.org.uk

WINDOW XP RETIRES -
WHAT’S THE FUSS? On April 8th 2014, Windows XP and Office 2003 ‘retire’. If you are a Windows XP user, what will it mean for you? The simple answer is that you will no longer receive Windows updates, security fixes or assistance and support concerning Windows XP. The copy of Windows XP on your computer will continue to work, it will not suddenly turn off and not work. Is that a big deal? On the surface, not really However, because your XP computer will become a less secure device, some companies have stated that they will not allow Windows XP to connect to their secure websites. This could impact any website that has a shopping basket or secure sign on it, be it your bank, building society, e-bay, PayPal, supermarket , Government/ tax office... this list goes on. The ramifications could be massive: you will leave yourself vulnerable to hackers and risks. If you have a machine that is 4 or more years old, we would urge you to replace it; if your machine is less than 4 years old, you can buy Windows 7 or a Windows 8 upgrade. If you are concerned about transferring your information, emails, data, music, photos and so on to a new machine, this is something we can do for you and make the transition as simple as possible. For further info, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can advise further.

WESTON’S WAR A WW2 musical enteratinment, featuring guest artistes & the Nigel Cassidy Orchestra Saturday 8 February at 4.30pm & 7.30 pm & also Sunday 9 February at 7.30pm Book online www.saintsweston.com or ring the box office 01932 227262 for mailing options All Saints Weston Green | Chestnut Ave | Esher | KT10 8JL
On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th February, local resident and former BBC producer Nick Handel, whose credits include Children in Need (with Terry Wogan), That`s Life! (with Esther Rantzen), In At The Deep End (with Chris Serle and Paul Heiney) and Jobs For The Girls (with Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson), will stage a live musical entertainment, depicting life in and around Weston Green between 1939 and 1945. The show will include first-hand reminiscences and dramatised sketches of a community coping with the challenges
of war. This unique event, which includes some of the most memorable and haunting melodies of the period performed to a live 9 piece orchestra, is part of a huge range of community activities taking place across the year to mark the 75th anniversary of the consecration of All Saints Church, Weston Green. Over the past few months, residents have been contacting Nick with personal stories which make this a vivid and vibrant local account. The result will be a real eye-opener to audiences from Elmbridge to beyond.
Weston`s War is both heartwarming and funny (after all, as they used to say on I.T.M.A., ‘it was `being so cheerful that kept us going’). The show reveals some amazing facts: the afternoon Chestnut Avenue was strafed by German machine guns, the doodlebug that fell on Imber Court, how the Home Guard got its rifles, VE high jinks on Weston Green and the local girls who fell for the GIs stationed at the American base in Bushy Park. Also on the bill are special guest appearances from Winston Churchill, Rita Hayworth,
The Andrews Sisters and Max Miller! The show will appeal to all ages, not just to those who remember the war: it will be an amazing experience for children learning about the WW2 as part of their curriculum studies. There will be a 4.30pm Saturday matinee as well as a 7.30pm evening performance on both Saturday and Sunday. For more details and for online booking, visit the All Saints Weston Green website

CLEVER DESIGN MAXIMUM USE OF SPACE
Lorraine and Craig McKenzie, with a little help from L&E (Lofts and Extensions), have used a combination of vision and flair to transform their loft space into a play area, along with two good-sized bedrooms. Not many women would let their spouse choose their family home, but for Lorraine, her first glimpse of their new terraced house on a pretty street in Teddington was on the day they collected the keys. “My husband knows what we like, so although I’d never seen the house, I knew he’d make the right choice for us,” Lorraine remembers, “And he was right; the space suited us perfectly then.”
Fast forward six years, however, and with two more children to add to their two teenage boys, the house was groaning at the seams. With their youngest aged two still living in their bedroom, it seemed the time had come to turn the large attic space into two additional bedrooms. They set to work to find the right builder, but at first, this didn’t prove easy. Lorraine comments “My husband had a singular vision of the space he wanted to create but struggled to find a builder whom he felt understood what he was trying to achieve.” It was at this point that they asked L&E round to quote. “We had seen their
boards everywhere, so decided to give them a try. The minute they met, my husband and the surveyor clicked and he seemed to really ‘get’ what we wanted. Ultimately, we chose them because they really listened to what we needed and we trusted them to do the job well. We also liked the quote which was thorough and came as a large detailed pack, so we knew what each step was and when we would need to pay each of the twenty instalments.” L&E’s architect agreed that Craig’s plan to maximise the full space by cleverly fitting in a play area alongside the two bedrooms would work, and formulated drawings to put through to planning. With permission granted in early autumn last year, the team set to work tackling the rear mansard and internal staircase as priorities. “They did a lot of work from the outside at first to cause minimal disruption, though as time went on, they had to come inside. They were very tidy though, and quiet too. Some days, I had to go upstairs to make sure they were there,” Lorraine laughs.
“The foreman was on site almost daily to oversee the work and had regular meetings with my husband or me if he was away. He was a good communicator and if anything needed explaining or decisions made, he would talk them through with us,” she remembers. Work progressed and the McKenzie family could quickly see the large cold attic space coming to life before them. The stairs were
redesigned to allow them to accommodate the children’s ‘chill-out zone’ and after seven weeks, the space was finally transformed with two bright but warm and cosy bedrooms. Thanks to the McKenzies’ vision and L&E’s translation of it, they have made the most of every last bit of space, and the couple are thrilled with the result. Looking back, it’s hard to imagine how the family previously fitted into this pretty home. “It’s really changed things,” Lorraine reflects. “The boys love it and now I can’t get the older one down! It’s the first time they have ever had their own rooms, so they were really excited.” And would you recommend L&E?
“I would, definitely. One hundred percent. Their attention to detail was really good and when they came back to go through the finish, I don’t think we had to pick them up on anything. Craig spent so much time planning this and now I just sometimes sit at the top of the stairs and think I can’t quite believe where this has come from – it’s amazing.” Mr and Mrs McKenzie are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

If you are looking for a restaurant which offers not only tip top service but delicious food too, you really should visit The Toby Cottage in Ripley. Full of character, with a menu full of delicious dishes to tempt your palate and delight your taste buds, it really is quite outstanding. If you fancy a pre-dinner drink whilst you choose your dinner, there is a cosy bar to sit and relax in, a nice place to gather before you sit down to eat. The menu really tests your decisionmaking powers, as so many of the options are tempting. There really is something for virtually every taste, I would imagine. Cecelia and I pondered for some time before making our selections, which were finally as follows:-
A crispy filo pastry duck parcel, served with watercress and sweet chilli jam, followed by Tournedos Rossini, an 8oz fillet steak served on a crouton topped with pate and a rich madeira sauce for Cecelia. And for me, scallops with pancetta to start, then Beef Wellington to follow. Our mouths were really watering! As I said before, the service at The Toby Cottage is second to none. The mix of friendly but professional staff is quite rare to find these days, and I noticed some regular customers were enjoying a New Year catchup with their waiter, who incidentally was dressed in a very smart dinner suit! Our starters arrived and were beautifully presented. The flavours did not disappoint either and both were greatly enjoyed. Even the bread was delicious, warm and fresh.

Unusually, we had both chosen beef main course options. Neither of us eat red meat very often, but this was a special treat! The smell as our dinner was presented was very good indeed and we couldn’t wait to start. Our knives slid easily through both cuts of meat. My Beef Wellington was encased in light, crisp puff pastry and the vegetables were also perfectly cooked and very tasty. The Tournedos Rossini was disappearing in front of my eyes too! A very happy dinner companion sat opposite me. To finish our meal, the dessert trolley proved too much of a temptation. A spectacular

Crepe Suzette for Cecelia was prepared at our table - very exciting! - and a white chocolate cheesecake somehow appeared in front of me. A cup of refreshing mint tea was the perfect end to a perfect meal. Essential Esher highly recommends the Toby Cottage. Our thanks go to Tony and Tony and all your lovely staff members too. MEDICAL MATTERS!!
CHANGES TO OUR BABY’S IMMUNISATIONS...
Having our tiny babies immunised is certainly not one of the most pleasant of duties as a parent but I often refer to it as a necessary evil. However, it can help to equip ourselves with a few facts. The immunisation schedule has changed recently in mainly two areas. For sometime now, we have offered three Meningitis C vaccines by the age of around 13 months (at 12 and 16 weeks and again at 12-13 months). However, the Health Protection Agency has detected an increase in the number of teenagers developing meningitis from this strain and have concluded that having the three vaccines at this age does not offer enough long-term protection against the disease. Therefore, the second dose has been dropped and instead will be offered at around 13 years. It is thought that the initial two doses are sufficient to protect younger children. The second change is the introduction of the Rotavirus vaccine, which has been added onto the 8 and 12 week immunisations. This is a liquid slowly squirted in the baby’s mouth. It is well known in other countries where it has been given for many years. It was previously not needed in this country but again, an increase in disease-prevalence has been found and the evidence is pointing towards the benefits of offering this vaccine to smaller, more vulnerable babies. For more information, have a look at https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/ system/uploads/attachment_data/file/254913/ Green_Book_Chapter_27b_v2_0.pdf http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/ Pages/vaccination-schedule-age-checklist.aspx
