Welcome to our busy June issue, At last a few days of warmer weather have passed our way recently. No guarantees for June of course, but hopefully we will be able to enjoy a few brighter days now! We have a few interesting features for you to read this month, including an amazing account about a local lady who went to Hollywood and rubbed shoulders with all sorts of stars. Henry Turner spoke to Pauline Butcher about her time spent working with Frank Zappa. As well as this, I met Vicky Lord, a local music therapist. It was fascinating chatting to Vicky. I hope you enjoy reading all about that too. We also welcome a new motoring feature by Ted Macauley. Ted lives locally and has a long running journalistic background. He has written motoring/lifestyle features for many national newspapers over the years. We welcome him to our pages. Add to all this, a great competition, a restaurant review and lots of local businesses and services for you to tap into too. We really do have lots going on locally at this time of year, so look out for information on events as you turn our pages. And finally, remember Fathers’ Day on Sunday 15th June!

Wishing you all a great month. Warmest regards,

MY LIFE WITH

FRANK ZAPPA Living in Twickenham, Pauline Butcher was a well-mannered young woman, a typist and amateur model in 1967, when a chance encounter started a partnership that would fuel her writing career. Working as a typist for a London agency, Pauline was commissioned to transcribe the lyrics of musician Frank Zappa’s song, ‘Brown Shoes Don’t Make It.’ The song’s crude and abstract metaphors, as well as Zappa’s constant use of profanity, were in stark contrast to Pauline’s sensibilities. Her protests about his language and the song, along with suggestions for alternate lyrics, endeared her to Zappa and the two struck up a rapport. The association that followed is documented in her book Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa, which BBC 4 adapted into a play broadcast on Tuesday, May 6th. After their meeting, the pair kept in touch, and when Pauline took a holiday to New York in 1968 to stay with her sisters, they met again. Pauline, who had come to admire Frank as a man who actually listened to and valued her opinion, was somewhat shocked to learn that he was a married man. At dinner one night when talking with Frank, Pauline joked about a proposed book, that she could type it up for him in London.

Frank responded to the quip by offering to hire her as his secretary in California. Though taken aback, Pauline accepted the offer. Their professional relationship got off to an awkward start when Frank took Pauline back to his hotel room and asked if, were she his secretary, he’d be able to become intimate with her. Pauline, fearful of losing the job and mindful of Frank’s wife, rebuffed his advances. The star remained true to his word about the job, however, and Pauline flew on with him to California, where she went on Frank’s payroll, ostensibly as a songwriter. She was quickly shown the ‘Log Cabin’; Frank’s hangout property where she was to live for five months. Pauline recalls that it was always full of people and bandmates. “Frank liked having people around, even if he didn’t pay them much attention.” Perhaps one of the most dramatic incidents was when a gunman named ‘Raven’ arrived at the Cabin with a bag of blood and a revolver. Zappa calmly manipulated Raven and the other occupants of the cabin into walking to the nearby lake, and when there, to throw things into it. Pauline threw a twig. Fortunately, Raven threw his gun. In spite of Frank’s seemingly progressive character as a musician, some frictions did

remained in England recuperating and continued to work for Frank. Pauline had wanted to attend university in California, but back home, she became aware of eased restrictions for entering Cambridge. She took a gamble and decided to apply, even though it meant losing her Green Card. At university, she met her husband and the two married. After her spouse became active in banking, the two moved to Singapore. When they eventually moved back to Cobham, a few years ago Pauline decided to rekindle her earlier ambition to write a book. Her time with Frank was “the only story that only I could tell” and publishers showed immediate interest. The book and the new radio programme were successful. Although it may be some sixty years since Pauline developed her writing aspirations, she’s nevertheless fulfilled them. Frank, she believes, would have been proud.

develop between him and Pauline. Although he was “supportive more than anyone else in my life” of her ambitions to write, Zappa was not in favour of a newfound attraction to feminism on Pauline’s part. Additionally, he did not show any enthusiasm for Pauline’s desire to apply to the University of California. Whilst in California, Pauline had read Kate Millett’s sexual politics and came to embrace the movement. “The phrase ‘love me less, respect me more,’ really spoke to me. It was exactly what needed to be said.’ Frank was disparaging of feminism as a movement and feminists as a whole. Contrary to his womanising on the road and his rockstar persona, Frank himself was “at the core, deeply conservative.” He abhorred drug-use and was strict in banning their consumption at the cabin. He even took care to stay in a separate hotel from his band mates for fear of police intervention. In 1971, a severe ear infection prompted Pauline to fly home for an operation. She

CAR REVIEW

PEUGEOT 308 save loads of fiddling. Peugeot...or PURRgeot...put their newcomer through two million miles of rigorous testing before its recent launch. They made it lighter than its stuffy predecessor, so its fuel thirst is not so unquenchable, and re-fashioned its indoors set-up to a really comfy level with bags of room for mum and the kids. If I were a rival producer in this market, I would be one concerned body because the 308’s show-off ability is not limited to its sleek appearance but also to its agility and economy. What more could you ask? Oh yes, how much? Between £14,495 and £24,045. My top-of-the class Feline model - they also have Access, Active and Allure - was a pussycat around town and a happy-to-go performer on the motorways. PURRR-fect.... Specification: Feline. Engine 1.6. 1598cc. BHP 156. Six speed manual. Top speed 132 mph. 0-62 8.4 secs. MPG 48.7. Price :£21,345.

By Ted Macauley

Let me introduce you to the Peugeot 308, or rather, the PURR-geot Feline. As hatchbacks go - and this one certainly does -the French car maker has weighed in with an ooh-la-la of a revitalised version of the preceding older, slower, more cumbersome model. And it is a treat of a drive that takes the price and style battle right to the doorstep of its Korean rivals. Understated it may look kerbside, but as a performer with balance and pep, nippy both off the mark and on the run, the updated, uprated 308 is a winner. And the interior is as refined as can be, with innovative simplified and straightforward touch-screen instrumentation that even technical duffers like me can make sense of without having to take a degree course in clocks and dials. The 9.7-inch display, so neat and tidy with its seven buttons, warns you of just about everything - and the keyless entry and start-up

‘The Seven Ages of Tax Planning’- Adult

This is part of our series of articles discussing tax planning at certain periods of life. Adult This article looks at some tax planning opportunities which are generally available to all adults regardless of whether they are married, in business or employed or propertyowners. The special opportunities for different circumstances will be covered in later articles. ISAs ISAs are probably the best known ‘tax break’ of them all. You can pay in up to £11,880 this tax year, and up half of this can go into a cash ISA but from July the limit is £15,000 split as you wish. Investments held in an ISA are free of capital gains tax and income tax (although there is no repayment of the tax credit on dividends). With a contribution to an ISA each year a substantial fund can be built-up outside the income tax and capital gains tax nets. Pension contributions This is the other big almost universal tax break. Anyone under 75 can pay up to a total of £2,880 into a personal pension, even if they have no income or even are already in an employer’s pension scheme. If they have earnings and no employer’s pension scheme then they can pay in up to the amount of their earnings subject to a £40,000 limit. The pension fund has tax relief added to it (so a contribution of £2,880 becomes £3,600). Further, for any higher-rate taxpayer, there is additional tax relief. The pension fund does not pay tax on the income and capital gains it makes. On taking the pension (between 55 and 75) up to 25% of the fund can be taken as a (currently) tax-free lump sum and the rest used to provide an income which is subject to income tax.

Gift Aid Any gifts you make to charity could be under Gift Aid (unless you are not a tax payer). This enables the charity to claim back tax on the gift, effectively increasing it by 25%. In addition,higher-rate taxpayers can claim further tax relief themselves – 25% of the gift for 40% taxpayers and 31.25% for 45% taxpayers. EISs, Seed EISs and VCTs These are special tax reliefs offered to investors in smaller, and therefore often riskier, companies. Needless to say, the rules are complex, but the general position is that you get tax back on your investment, 30% for VCTs and EISs and 50% for SEISs. Provided the investment is held for three years (five for VCTs) this tax relief is permanent. On top of this, there is no capital gains tax on any sale proceeds after the investment has been held for three years. With an EIS you can also roll-over a capital gain made on another asset within three years before and one year after the investment, effectively deferring the tax. For SEIS, this is a complete exemption for a gain, though only half the SEIS investment can be used – making the tax break one at 64% for the right circumstances. Inheritance Tax Reliefs Any gifts you make to individuals totalling £3,000 in any tax year are IHT-free, as are any gifts you make out of surplus income. But probably much more important is the fact that any gifts you make are normally ignored after seven years. A good programme of gifts during your lifetime can greatly reduce the eventual inheritance tax. O f co urse, any o f these steps have to be do ne co rrectly to ensure they have the desired tax advantages.

MUSIC THERAPY When Vicky Lord was thirteen years old, she read a book about music therapy. Having always been a keen musician, even then, Vicky thought that music could help us through life in so many ways. Previously, she worked in business in the IT and Telecoms sector, with over 13 years’ experience and as one of the founding board of Directors at Uswitch.com. Vicky continues to add to her credentials and is currently studying for an MSC in Clinical Neuroscience at Roehampton. But her calling was always music therapy, so Vicky made the brave decision to change directions and started her training at The Guildhall School of Music. It was during this time she won a financial award competition, which was sponsored by Deutsche Bank. The £3000 prize money enabled her to set up her music therapy business and offer parents subsidised therapy sessions for children who could benefit. Vicky has been offering music as therapy for eleven years now.

Her business is a non - profit project to help people through music.

Vicky says ‘Almost everyone responds to music, regardless of any physical or cognitive disability or emotional need. Music therapy can provide emotional support in a similar way to counselling, as well as cognitive, social and communication

development in children. It can be particularly beneficial for people who have difficulties communicating, as it offers them a means of self-expression without words, building a sense of awareness and selfesteem. Music therapy is based on the belief that the ability to respond to and express oneself through music is an inborn quality in all human beings, regardless of disability, illness or injury, and not dependent on musical training. The aims of music therapy are therapeutic rather than musical. My overall aim is to be closely involved with the development of the whole child and to help him/her achieve their full potential. Music therapy sessions are not like music lessons, where the focus might be on learning a specific instrument. Instead, music is used as a way of exploring communications and emotions. Music therapy is a child-led activity, where the therapist improvises music in response to the child’s singing, musical contributions, movements, breathing patterns or mood. Children are given plenty of time to initiate or respond to the music. This may give the child the experience of ‘togetherness’, being listened to, being heard and accepted. This helps to build a positive and therapeutic relationship between child and therapist and parent, if taking part in the session.

Most music therapy sessions are on a oneto-one basis and last for around 30 minutes. Sometimes, small groups are run with 3-4 people including at least one therapist.’ Music therapists consider neurological pathways which can modify and help with neurodegeneration and neurodevelopmental problems. This is a concept called neuroplasticity which occurs rapidly in children’s and adolescent’s development and to a lesser degree in adults’ brains in many cognitive, motor and sensory areas Here we can see an image showing the complexity of neural pathways in regions of the brain.

Vicky’s main experience in these areas comes from having worked with children from private practices, children’s hospitals, The Children’s Trust in Tadworth, in schools and in various children’s centres. Vicky’s community project is called Dolphin Music Therapy which she runs from home in Claygate. It is a subsidised service, open to all children and adolescents. She also works at The Three Rivers Children’s Centre and as a volunteer music therapist at The Children’s Trust with children who have acquired brain injury through accident or illness. The stimulus of music really does help

‘We work on a number of levels, physical through motor skills, sensory integration using sound, touch and sight, cognitively and neurologically at the top – the organization and integration of the input. I integrate play therapy into my practice and specific neurological techniques: for example, memory or auditory discrimination processing tasks for cognition and coordination. In terms of children I work with, their issues range from communication and social difficulties, neurodevelopmental disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, cancer and cerebral palsy. I work with the child and sometimes the parents to provide both with support and emotional development and we normally all have good fun together. ‘

the brain develop and repair; in fact, music therapy has been shown to have a beneficial effect right up until the age of 23. As well as running her business, Vicky is also a trustee at two children’s music therapy charities in London and is a governor at Claygate Primary School...and very involved with the Claygate Village Show too! CAU has recently opened a fabulous new restaurant at The Riverside, Kingston and they have brought their brand new menu with them. I went along last week to soak up the atmosphere in their distinctive and contemporary interior, which is very cutting edge indeed! The restaurant is situated right down by the river and has a very nice terrace area with big parasols all ready for the sunshine. We sat inside but could still enjoy the river view through the big glass picture windows. The menu embraces Buenos Aires cuisine, a melting pot of comfort food, inspired by Italy and Spain alongside the jewel in Argentina’s crown, its beef. Mouthwatering steaks, burgers and steak sandwiches are joined by a tempting selection of more-ish favourites, each with a distinctive Buenos Aires twist.

You can enjoy a sharing plate and a beer over lunch with a friend or savour one of the speciality cuts and a bottle of red over dinner. Both would be equally enjoyable, I’m very sure! Our meal was delicious. We shared our starters of salt and pepper squid and some spicy gambas which are basically massive prawns with a chipotle dip. To follow, twice cooked pork belly for me and some tapa de cuadril for my dinner companion. This is a top of the rump cut of thinly sliced and flash grilled beef which apparently melted in the mouth! To finish our wonderful evening, we enjoyed Dulce de Leche pancakes and a chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream! What a treat! Essential Esher highly recommends you visit CAU by the river in Kingsto. This is a great restaurant and the quality of food and service were both excellent.

Thank You CAU. I’m sure you will be welcoming some of our readers very soon! Call 020

COTTAGE INDUSTRY Lacking space and having decided moving house was not an option, Gemma and Sach Gholap chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to transform their pretty Victorian cottage in Teddington. Gemma reflects, “We knew we couldn’t stay in this house unless we made it bigger. We looked around but it is just so expensive to move.” After getting the loft converted two years in, they had waited another six months before they felt ready to tackle the ground floor extension. Gemma comments “We knew we needed lots of light coming in and used the same architect that had done the loft to draw up plans.”

Attention then turned to choosing a builder.

“We got loads of quotes from local companies and went to see two or three jobs from the top ones. The jobs we looked at from L&E looked really good, and people couldn’t say enough nice things about the team.” The

comprehensive payment plan L&E provided also helped. “When the quotes came back, L&E’s was more

detailed so we could be really clear on what we were getting for the money.” L&E’s team began to dig the foundations for the new extension in a cold, snowy January. Once footings were complete, the team moved inside and soon after Gemma and Sach sensibly decided to move in with friends for a month. They kept in close contact with the site foreman however. “We had regular meetings and he

was really good at keeping us updated with progress. Once a week, we would sit down and agree what was happening and what we needed to buy next,” Gemma remembers.

With the major building work complete, the team moved onto the second phase of the project. “We had a clear vision of what we wanted and we’d come along and discuss it with the foreman to work out the best options. My husband is a perfectionist and so they knew it had to be exactly right,” Gemma remembers. “The foreman was great. There was always really good attention to detail and the finish was really

good.” Indeed with cleverly defined zones there is a seamless flow throughout the ground floor and the oasis of calm belies its role as the hub of the house. The kitchen rooflights mean the ground floor space is flooded with light and the modern bi-folding doors open out for an uninterrupted connection with the garden space. Instead of moving, the couple can now put down roots. It’s also worth reflecting on the cost of moving versus building an extension and the value that creates in your home. Gemma puts it simply – “We couldn’t afford to buy this now!” Mr and Mrs Gholap are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

RHS

HAMPTON COURT FLOWER SHOW RHS Hampton Court is the largest flower show in the world and based in the wonderful setting of Hampton Court Palace with the backdrop of the long water and palace. It really is a very special place to be inspired. I’m a great fan and have been going since it began, only missing a few years when I was expecting or had small children to look after. After training to become a garden designer in 2006, I was lucky enough to exhibit a show garden in 2008 and then again in 2013. This July, I have designed a wildlife garden for Jordans Cereals which is my first ‘large’ show garden. It is such an honour to have a design selected for one of the prime show garden sites and I am really looking forward to the challenge. As a company, Jordans has been committed to supporting wildlife since the 1980s, and all the Jordans oat farmers devote 10% of their land to wildlife. The show garden is inspired by a miz maze (turf-maze) and represents a journey through nature, which is both relaxing and refreshing. It is designed to show that a wildlife garden can still be beautiful, and good for people AND wildlife. There is an emphasis on natural materials: the garden paths are mown meadow turf and the central nut terrace is made from cobnuts and other natural materials. The benches are sculpted from straw, and oats are included to represent the Jordans farms. Bug hotels and birdhouses make

beautiful sculpture features in the garden and the planting is a feast for people and wildlife alike. Jordans works with Edd Kimber who won the first British Bakeoff, and he has some new recipes which are made using ingredients foraged in the garden. Of course, it’s a huge amount of work and responsibility to create a garden that is both sustainable and beautiful and all built in just three weeks. The build begins 16th June and the show starts 7th July. Jordans Cereals Wildlife Garden is in the Inspire Zone on the main path through the show gardens. Hampton Court Flower show runs Monday 7th - Sunday 13th July. Selina will be on hand every day of the show at noon to meet Essential Esher readers. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina Botham for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uK.

MEDICAL MATTERS!!

WILLOW DIABETES & DIET LANDSCAPES P A R T O N E Diet is the cornerstone for management of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) but it is often said that it is not rocket science, and really, a balanced healthy diet is what we should all be following. We are all aware that a diet for diabetes should be as low in sugar as possible. It does not mean absolutely no sugar, but rather, minimising sugar intake and avoiding adding sugar to foods and drinks is the best approach. Carbohydrates, commonly known as ‘starchy foods’ include foods such as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. When these are digested, they produce a form of sugar which may also cause a rise in blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are needed as an energy source but portion control is essential in order to avoid a potentially sharp rise in blood sugar levels after meals: for example, on a dinner plate, ideally no more than one quarter to one third of the plate should be carbohydrate. This becomes more tricky with rice and pasta meals, as they can often cover the entire plate, and the best way to manage this is to replace these ‘carbs’ with vegetables. Nutritional labels are useful as a guide to sugar content - look at ‘carbohydrates of which are sugars’. This gives some idea of what foods to avoid but is also helpful to compare foods such as different yoghurts to help identify the lowest sugar content to help make a better informed choice. HAVE IT YOUR WAY... We have seen a considerable increase in customers wanting computers for specific tasks, defined performance requirements, shapes & sizes. By way of example, we have recently supplied machines which are near-silent to act as media centres in the lounge or sound design setup for the recording studio; we have provided multimonitor systems for trading desks, powerful 3D CAD systems with multi-monitors for design and drafting purposes, high performance medical workstations with multi-solid state hard drives for high speed, durability and reliability, multi-drive machines for video and photo manipulation, where the solid state drive runs the operating system and programs and the mechanical hard drive(s) provide the data storage required. Yes, you’ve guessed it, there are loads of options and variations, and yes, it is possible to purchase a “stock” machine and adapt it, but this usually is more costly and you will end up with an inferior product. We have been designing and building PCs for the past 25 years. We are confident a TecRes custom machine will provide you with the best quality, performance and value currently available. A specific system will have been proposed, taking into account a wide variety of factors, including your needs and requirements, the system’s power requirements, cooling, appearance, noise levels. So if you feel your next machine needs to be something “a bit different” why not talk to us?

This guide was written by Les Beer from TecRes, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. How can we help you? For further information, please call 01372-370300 or email sales@tecres.co.uk

Plans announced to extend Waitrose Esher & redevelop vacant police station site Waitrose and Levanter Developments are inviting local people to comment on plans to extend the existing Waitrose shop in Esher and redevelop the adjacent vacant Surrey Police Station site with five new apartments above a separate commercial unit. The current store is in need of major new investment and Esher Police Station has not operated as a functioning facility for more than 18 months. The proposal would help revitalise the site and deliver new employment opportunities. Waitrose is proposing to extend its shop from 15,620 sq ft to approximately 25,000 sq ft and increase car park spaces from 118 spaces at present to circa 171 spaces. The plans would also allow the service yard to be improved to enable vehicles to unload within an enclosed area which, unlike now, is screened off from the car park. The extension would be built through a phased programme to ensure Waitrose can continue to serve the town throughout the works. Levanter intends to replace the former police station with a 3,000 sq ft commercial unit at ground floor level with five residential properties above and eight associated car parking spaces. The residential properties would be a combination of four two bedroom apartments and one three bedroom apartment. In addition to the 140 employees Waitrose already employs at the store, up to 40 new jobs would be created for local people. Jobs would also be created by the new commercial unit. Thousands of newsletters will be distributed to local residents informing them about the plans this weekend to ask them to complete the enclosed freepost comment form. From Thursday 8th May people can also register comments online at www.esherwaitrose.co.uk.

Waitrose Esher branch manager, Andrew Godman, said: “We are keen to build on almost 30 years of serving in the town and ensure we offer our Esher customers the same quality shopping experience we are able to provide in our more modern stores. Through extending the store and providing a much improved car park we believe we can provide a strong retail anchor for Esher for many years to come.”

Director of Levanter Developments, Chris Manning, added: “It’s imperative that Esher remains an attractive, vibrant destination and provides the necessary facilities to compete with neighbouring towns. This is an exciting opportunity to inject new investment and bring an important vacant site at the southern gateway to the High Street back into use.”

Waitrose and Levanter hope to be able to submit a planning application in the summer. If successful, they aim to start work on site at the end of 2014 and anticipate completion of the project in late 2015.
