Hello there, Esher,
I do hope you are all well and that you have avoided any flooding. It’s all been quite scary really, hasn’t it, listening to the news, seeing the unimaginable images of so many properties submerged in water, which is increasingly getting nearer and nearer to home. I’m hoping that the norm will apply here, in that historically, every time I mention the weather when writing this message, it’s very different by the time you read this! Let’s just hope the change is for the better, of course, or I will be in big trouble! This month has once again flown by, but along the way, I’ve enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing reflexology treatment with Pam Diamond and also tried out a 9 day cleansing programme. As well as all this, I visited the dentist, but not necessarily in that order! On an entirely different note, we hear about a new book by local author, Janetta Harvey. Saving Susie-Belle tells the story of a heart-warming animal rescue but also highlights some outrageous practices in the world of animal breeding. Janetta’s story made it to the national press/media and I truly hope the publicity will go some way to changing these barbaric practices. Time for me to go now, but I do hope you enjoy this ‘Spring’ issue!
Happy Mothers’ Day to all you mums out there! (That’s 30th March btw!)
Oh yes and enjoy Pancake Day too!! (4th March!)

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary. • A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can
typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

REFLEXOLOGY has to be one of my favourite alternative therapies, so I was delighted when Pam Diamond invited me along for a relaxing treatment recently. Pam practises at Sandown Sports Club in Esher. The club offers free parking which is always a bonus these days! It was lovely to see Pam again and she made me feel very welcome. Following a quick chat about any medical issues I might have, she was ready to start my treatment. The room was nice and warm and it was filled with wonderfully relaxing music. MODERN REFLEXOLOGY is based on an ancient form of therapy. There is evidence of some form of foot and hand therapy being practised in China as long ago as 4,000 BC. and at the same time in Egypt, as depicted in the tomb of Ankmahor. The North American
tribes of Indians are known to have practised a form of foot therapy for hundreds of years too, so it really has stood the test of time. Pam treats a wide selection of clients, from stressed mothers to high powered executives, all of whom say they really feel the benefits from their sessions. Reflexology can also help with back or neck pain and even fertility problems, so it has a wide range of uses. It is amazing to think that the soles of our feet are basically a map of the rest of our bodies in reflexology terms. The right foot relates to our physical well-being and the left foot has the same layout but relates to our emotions. Pam uses a little tea tree oil to aid the treatment and applies a medium pressure which can be adjusted to suit. It felt perfect to me! Basically, she applies gentle pressure and rubbing to either calm or stimulate the corresponding body parts as appropriate.
The treatment was so wonderful and just what I needed. Pam finished by massaging some light coconut oil into my feet which was heavenly. This would make a fantastic Mothers Day
gift for any busy mum you might know. Pam is very calm and gentle and made my treatment very enjoyable indeed. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SPOILING ME, PAM!
Indian Head Massage increases circulation and promotes relaxation in the areas most vulnerable to tension - head, neck and shoulders which may help with headaches, sinus congestion and eye strain.

PETS AND GARDENS Selina Botham is an award-winning garden designer, based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202, or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk I have had a number of clients with pets and here are a few examples of how I’ve accommodated their needs. Cats are easy really and don’t affect the design much. Rabbit runs have been accommodated to the side of a garden, tucked behind a swath of planting, cages in the side passage way. Dogs are a bit more challenging and the biggest problem I find is wee on the lawn, which creates unsightly patches! The best solution is to have an area in the garden which is out of sight, where the dog is trained to relieve itself. This works perfectly but needs a well-trained pooch. In two other gardens, I have designed a separate gated courtyard garden where the dog can be kept when the client doesn’t want it roaming round the garden unsupervised. As far as planting design goes, I use pretty tough plants and haven’t had any problems with the planting. You just have to make sure the garden routes are well
16
designed so the dogs don’t need to charge through planting. I used yew topiary instead of box for one client, as this copes better with dog wee. I have designed a garden for a lady with six dogs in Headley and this was quite interesting! As they are essentially a pack, I needed to make sure that the desire lines of the dogs were considered in the design in the same way as I do the humans. She had a problem with her existing garden because the dogs went through the flower beds at a particular point. When I looked at the existing layout, it was obvious that the dogs had just worked out a much better way of getting around the garden. When I redesigned the garden, I changed the access routes so the dogs could go the way they wanted. The new garden design opened up much better views and clear access for both dogs and people into a large area of the garden. So, to succeed with pets and gardens, it’s a case of good design really helps!

Saving Susie-Belle n a newly released book, Saving Susie-Belle, Cobham author Janetta Harvey tells the moving true story of how she gave a rescued miniature schnauzer a loving new home. Susie-Belle was saved from the horrific puppy farming industry and the book is not only a celebration of Susie-Belle’s survival and new life, but is also an investigation into the terrible hidden world of breeding puppies for cash.
For over six years, Susie-Belle had been trapped in a life of misery as someone’s commodity, a puppy farm breeding bitc. She was tied up in the back of a filthy agricultural shed, never seeing the outside world, receiving little or no care and experiencing neglect to a horrifying degree. When she was found, her body was so frail, thin and abused that it was thought she would not survive long. Her entire life had been about producing puppies to be sold to dealers, who in turn sold her babies to unwitting puppy buyers via online ads or in pet shops, or from the boot of a car. All these are outlets used by dealers in puppies from commercial breeding places. Puppies are an easy source of cash for the breeders and dealers and are seen as nothing more. The parent dogs like Susie-Belle are kept in cruel confinement for years until they are so worn out or sick that they can no longer produce the goods. Then, and only then, do they leave captivity, and not always into the safe arms of rescuers. For Susie-Belle, peace came before death, as she is one of the lucky ones: that is, if we consider surviving years of loneliness, pain and terror as lucky. For she was rescued, lifted out of the dark and grubby hidden nightmare that is puppy farming and brought to safety. After spending six months in a loving foster home in Berkshire where she underwent essential veterinary care, including sight-saving cataract surgery, eventually, Susie-Belle arrived to live with Janetta and her husband Michel in Cobham.
Now she shares a peaceful home with her two schnauzer sisters and experiences nothing less than complete loving daily care. Where once she was a scabby, nameless creature, she now has a beautiful name, and life these days is good, as good as it can possibly be. Never again will it be anything less for this gentle soul who has suffered at the hands of humans who value commercial profits more than life itself. At rescue, Susie-Belle was severely underweight; now she lives in a home where her diet gets more attention than many humans give their own – Michel is a chef and Janetta is an enthusiastic foodie and they share abundant culinary joy with Susie-Belle. Travelling regularly to France accompanied by SusieBelle and her canine sisters, camping round the UK, meeting other dogs up and down the country, the book tells the story of SusieBelle’s first year out of the dark and on the road to recovery. Saving Susie-Belle is published by John Blake and is available in all good bookshops and as a Kindle edition. Following the tremendously successful book launch party hosted by the very dog-friendly Cobham Bookshop on 2nd February, signed copies are available there at 12 Anyards Road, Cobham. To find out more about puppy farming and to keep up to date with Susie-Belle’s life, follow her on twitter @SusieBSchnauzer, her blog susiefoodie.blogspot.co.uk or find Susie-Belle Schnauzer on Facebook.

A FAMILY HOME TRANSFORMED Ruth and Bob Anderson turned to L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to transform a run-down property into an impressive family home. You never know where life will take you, but as the Anderson family proves, with a little hard work and determination you really do get out what you put in. When they began searching for their ideal family home, refurbishing a house was never part of the plan. Fast-forward three years, however, and still out looking, they knew it was time to make some compromises. “We had no intention of doing work, but the perfect place was either too expensive or in the wrong road,” Ruth admits. “When we found this place, we were in two minds, as we really like the area but with all the work to do, it seemed really daunting.” That was 2012 when the house was a very different place. “Nothing had been done for a long time, so it needed a lot doing inside and out. Even so, it had a happy, cosy feel and we could see its potential,” Ruth remembers. By the time they picked up the keys, the couple were of course keen to live there but knew that the house needed refurbishing at the very least before they moved in. “Originally, I approached lots of different builders to do different jobs and was getting into a real pickle. What I really needed was for someone to come in and just take control for me.” Luckily for the Andersons, it was at this point that they decided to give
L&E a call. “L&E’s surveyor came round
and I really liked him. He had an answer to all my questions and gave me real confidence in the company. He suggested that rather than doing bits and pieces, why not do it all in one go, as it will save money in the long run. That really opened my eyes and we decided just to go for it,” Ruth remembers.
She also liked the teams “can do” attitude and their personable approach. “The surveyor was really informative and even took me to see a project completed by what was to become my building team. It gave me that instant impression of what they had done and the quality of work that could be produced. The whole team was really interactive and responsive to what we wanted,” she remembers. Although the pair had a vision of what they wanted to achieve, how to go about it was another matter. Ruth recalls “We had a budget to work to, so really needed L&E to guide us as to what we could afford to do. We were in a tearing rush and their architect worked round the clock to produce the right style and came up with lots of things that we hadn’t thought of.” The final plan included all that the couple craved: a full refurbishment, two extensions and a loft conversion.
“I have recommended them to several friends and they are working on someone else’s already. People have been so impressed by my enthusiasm but they really were just wonderful.”
Work started on a cold October morning, and with a deadline of five months, the team set to work to complete the task. “In full flow, there were probably 18 men working here. The foreman had a good army of people who all worked well together.” Renting at the end of the road meant that there wasn’t far to go to catch up on progress. “It was
project- managed beautifully, and while I could have been needier, I didn’t have to be, as I felt confident that the team was just cracking on with it.”
As with all projects, communication is key and the Andersons stayed in close contact with L&E. “They provided us with a schedule of work, so we knew when we needed to get things like the kitchen or bathroom ordered by, and were really flexible, so we could choose the quality of things like doors, lighting effects and security. We played around with layouts a lot and they were really patient, even moving the loo around for us to sit on and decide where to locate it,” Ruth laughs. “They worked long hours too, starting at 8am and often finishing at 6pm. My husband and I walked in with a bottle of champagne to celebrate New Year’s Day to find a decorator working here!” Long hours and hard work paid off and finally in late winter, the kitchen and first floor bathroom extensions and loft conversion were finally complete. Ruth remembers, “Suddenly, it all came
together. They quoted five months and finished when they promised. I couldn’t speak more highly of L&E. Just look
around and you’ll see the quality of workmanship really speaks for itself. There was a real interest level from the team to get things just right and that will really make a difference over time.” The finished house is a home for all seasons. In the summer, the doors can be flung open, with the garden an extension of the large contemporary room. In winter, the log burner and cosy furnishings create a warm and snug feel. Their two children have the run of the first floor, while in the loft conversion at the top of the house, the couple have created their own personal sanctuary. Looks can be deceptive, as Ruth agrees, “It doesn’t feel like a loft
extension, as they have managed to tie it in so beautifully that it just flows. All my friends comment on how lovely it is.”
Ruth has wasted no time in recommending L&E to friends. “I have recommended them to several friends and they are working on someone else’s already. People have been so impressed by my enthusiasm but they really were just wonderful. It’s a lot of money to spend and so important to know that you are spending it wisely.” Mr and Mrs Anderson are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

MEDICAL MATTERS!!
HAYFEVER...
Around one in four of us knows the misery that comes with hayfever every year. It is simply an allergy to pollen, but in extreme cases can mean time off work or school. Different pollens can cause hayfever at different times of the year, but the most common hayfever -inducing pollens come from grass and are usually at their peak in June and July. A diagnosis of hayfever is usually made simply by looking at symptoms, especially in an otherwise healthy individual. We are all familiar with the symptoms of hayfever - the blocked or runny nose, the sneezing and the itchy eyes/throat/mouth. However, symptoms can vary from day to day, depending on the pollen count. We can expect a high pollen count when it is hot and dry and a lower count when it is cooler and wetter. The mainstay of treatment for hayfever is a nonsedating antihistamine. This effectively dampens down the body‘s reaction to the pollen and may be taken as needed throughout the season. It can be bought from your pharmacist without a prescription and without a trip to the GP. If however symptoms are not controlled in this way, it is best to seek further advice. Other treatments include eye drops and an intranasal (up the nose!) steroid spray. Ideally, this spray should be started two weeks before the hayfever season starts. Other tips for managing hayfever include putting Vaseline just inside the nostrils which helps to ‘catch’pollens, shutting windows to keep pollens outside and staying in doors - admittedly not always practical! For more information, have a look at http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/hay-fever/ Pages/Introduction.aspx

CLEAN 9 I was recently asked to review a Forever Living Clean 9 programme. For the first two days, you have one special shake to drink a day, along with aloe vera, garcinia, bee pollen and lots of water. Day One was fine; I was surprised that I didn’t really feel that hungry. Day Two was a little harder for me but I got through it OK and decided that an early night was a good idea! Once I reached Day Three, I started to feel better and as if I was already starting to lose some weight, but I resisted the urge to stand on the scales! By now, it was also much more manageable because I was able to have two shakes during the day and a 600 calorie meal in the evening. I found myself really looking forward to my evening meal and not worrying so much about the fact that I wasn’t eating in the day. I soon realized how much I pick at food, more out of habit than necessity to be honest, and certainly when I didn’t really need to. In fact, if I did feel a little hungry, I simply drank more water which filled me up. But on the whole, the shakes did a pretty good job of getting me through the day. It is also recommended that you take 20 minutes of fairly gentle exercise, and walking the dogs sorted that out for me.
This 9-day programme is all about cleansing your body and getting it to work more efficiently. Endorsed by doctors and nutritionists, it focuses on losing only body fat. It is a great way to break old habits and start afresh, whilst cleansing your body of unnatural chemicals. The easy-to-follow 9-day programme is designed to kick-start your weight loss, whilst putting you on the right path to take control of your overall health. • My weight loss was more than I expected; I lost 6 lbs over the 9 days. • I feel more energetic. • My skin certainly looks better. • And it was actually easier to stick to than I thought it would be. As part of the programme, you are encouraged to measure various points of your body at the start and end of the cleanse. By doing this, I found that I had an overall total loss of 6 inches which I was delighted with. I am snacking less and feel that I have made a very positive change to my eating habits. I have also felt more energized. Even now, when I am on a tight deadline for work, when I would normally be reaching for the biscuit tin, I don’t feel tempted to stray. I feel much less drawn to
sweet things in general, and with all the talk of sugar in the news, this has to be a very positive step forward! In addition to the Clean 9 programme, I also tried the Forever Trim, Tone & Tighten Aloe Body Toning Kit.This was actually great fun and made my skin feel amazing. You start by cleansing your skin (in the shower or bath) and once dry, you are encouraged to do the measuring exercise at three points, your arms, upper legs and torso, and record your measurements. You then apply the Aloe Body Toner which is a warming and stimulating cream, and you can feel the warmth as you apply it. Now for the fun bit! You literally wrap your arms, torso below the bust and legs above the knees in cling film which you then leave in place for one hour. I watched TV whilst wrapped up not only in cling film, but in my dressing gown too! I could really feel the warming sensation of the body toner working under the layers of plastic. After one
hour, I gently cut away the wrap and rubbed any remaining cream into my skin. To gain maximum benefit, it is recommended that you should not wash for about 3 or 4 hours after the treatment. At this stage, you measure again and yes, all my measurements had reduced and my skin felt amazing. I was advised to repeat this process at the start and end of the cleansing period which I did. This treatment works particularly well in conjunction with the Clean 9 programme, maximizing the effects as well as ensuring a little ‘me’ time, which is certainly a nice bonus too! If you would like to give your body a real treat, start by calling Claire or Gilles for a chat. Their contact details can be found in the advert here and I am sure they will be delighted to hear from you and answer any questions you may have. Thank you both very much for letting me try this amazing programme. I am feeling good!

Astek
Dental Centre
Astek Dental Centre continues to advance and develop. Recent refurbishment brings with it a bright and cheerful waiting area and a selection of beautifully kitted-out treatment rooms. It really does offer a very nice environment for all aspects of dental care, ranging from their routine denture services to cosmetic dentistry, implants, veneers and even mouthguards for sportswear, to name but a few. I was recently invited along to meet their newest member of staff, Diane Etherington, who is a qualified dental hygienist. Diane will be supporting the dental staff at Astek on a part-time basis and her 30 minute appointments are well worth including in your overall dental care. At £45 per visit, they are very good value for money, and if needed, dentures can be cleaned at the same time. As they say, prevention is certainly better than cure when it comes to teeth.
Astek has provided Diane with a newly decorated room to work from and I was invited to ‘take the chair’! As a new patient, Diane started by running through a few basic medical questions, and once the formalities were over, she looked at my teeth. I am pretty lucky and have been blessed with a fairly good set of gnashers, but I must confess to not being very regular with the dental floss. Diane said that my teeth looked in good condition and this is helped by the fact that I use an electric toothbrush. But to maintain good gum health, she advised that I should floss regularly. My teeth are also prone to slight sensitivity with hot or cold temperatures, and as a result, I wondered if the cleaning process might be slightly uncomfortable but it really wasn’t. Diane gave my teeth a thorough clean and polish and a good flossing too! We discussed different types of toothpaste and floss products. She
was very gentle and talked me through each stage of my appointment, asking me to tell her if I was at all uncomfortable at any point. She is really lovely and made my visit very stress-free indeed. At the end, I was delighted to see how clean my teeth looked and felt. I will definitely be back to visit Diane in the future - and I promise to floss every
night! Thank you very much, Astek Dental, I actually enjoyed my visit and it’s not often you can say that where dentists are concerned! For an appointment with Diane or to discuss any other dental requirements, please call 01372 377678. I know you will receive a very warm welcome.

16-hour summer golf challenge to tackle rare conditions Keen golfers are being asked to dedicate one of the longest days of 2014 entirely to their game, playing 16 hours of golf between sun up and sun down to help a charity funding research into rare and devastating musclewasting conditions. On Friday 13 June, the Four Course Classic challenge will see teams of four players from across the UK take on four courses, playing 72 holes and covering 15 miles of fairway, to support the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The annual event raises up to £50,000 for the charity, which is funding groundbreaking research to tackle muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions, and supports the 70,000 families in the UK affected. Hundreds of clubs around the UK support the challenge each year, donating free tee times to golfers, with the charity pledging to approach any courses not yet signed up for the event on request. Prizes awarded to top fundraising and scoring teams include golf breaks and signed merchandise. Ryder Cup-winning captain, Sam Torrance OBE, who is a long-term supporter of the event, said: “The Four Course Classic is an opportunity for keen golfers to truly test their mettle
while supporting a small charity making a big difference to people living with musclewasting conditions. Muscular dystrophy is rare and many people have never heard of it, but it is often devastating for families affected. By taking on the challenge of playing from sunrise to sunset, you will be helping to ensure that the thousands of people who will be diagnosed with muscular dystrophy next year have somewhere to turn.” Britain’s most accomplished female golfer, Laura Davies CBE has added her backing to the Four Course Classic. She said: “This is a great challenge to conquer. In attempting to complete four courses in one day for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, not only will you get the opportunity to play some demanding and exciting golf, but also to further pioneering research that could change lives.” Visit www.fourcourseclassic.co.uk to sign up and select your chosen courses or call 020 7803 4824. Standard registration fee is £25 per player which includes a comprehensive fundraising and preparation pack, the four complimentary tee times and a Four Course Classic polo shirt for each player. Teams are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of £250 per player.
