Delivered Free
Hello, Esher!
I do hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Easter break. It’s good to be enjoying these lighter evenings and feeling a little more summery, isn’t it? And with more Bank Holidays to enjoy, we welcome the month of May! I am delighted to welcome back guest writer, Henry Turner; this month, Henry visited some local churches and tells us all about The Churches Conservation Trust local tour he attended recently. I was spoilt rotten a week or so back when I met Justine, a local mobile beauty therapist. My feet were treated to a bit of a summer make-over and all from the comfort of my own sitting room. If you fancy a treat, why not give Justine a call? You’ll find her details inside. Ember Players launch their 2014 drama season with a production of the classic comedy ‘The Lady Killers’. The Esher-based group will be performing very early in May, so don’t hang around if you would like to go, it sounds like a great night out! Details can be found on page 42.
I hope you enjoy our May issue! Wishing you all a great month,

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary. • A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can
typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

HISTORIC CHURCH TOURS 2014 The Church Conservation Trust, a charity that maintains old churches no longer in use, is hoping to invigorate Britain’s interest in exploring the hidden historical gems around us by organising several tours through May to October across the country. I was offered the chance to investigate Surrey’s “Lords and Gentry” tour and visit three of the four churches, each sharing historical links to the aristocracy, that
participants would visit by coach. The tour’s first destination is the village of Albury. Nestled within the grounds of the imposing mansion is the small Saxon church of St Peter & St Paul. Surrounded by grass and sporting an original medieval porch, it looks idyllic. I met local volunteer Daphne Foulsham, who took me into the church through its huge original door. Stepping through, it felt like
I’d travelled back in time. The church was a bright and open space, made airy by its relative emptiness. It seemed devoid of ornamentation; its white-washed walls were bare for the most part, except for a large painted medieval mural of St. Christopher and Christ. Daphne told me that the striking work had been washed over to save it from the Reformation and the image was reportedly exposed inadvertently by a workman fitting a nearby plaque; he was said to have been terrified as, atop his ladder, he was brought face-to-face with a staring saint. The church was key to village life, but things changed when the landowners sold out to the Drummonds, who came into conflict with the local congregation. The parishioners were convinced ultimately to move to a new church, paid for by the family. This left them free to alter the old church, adding in a chapel designed by Pugin, famed for designing the Palace of Westminster’s interior. The colourful Gothic splendour of this small adjoining room strikes a real contrast with its spartan surroundings. The next stop was St Mary’s in Stoke d’Abernon, Surrey’s oldest church, which is still in use to this day. Its interior was large, well-ornamented and full of objects showcasing different points in English history. Stephen Chater, the man running the tour, spoke with me about it and the work of the CCT. He observed that churches offer a lens into the history of Britain, and as they change and adapt over time, they exhibit evidence of the standards of those who worshipped within them. St Mary’s itself is a living example of this and evidence of its Saxon origins were apparent. An inaccessible doorway, visible high on one of the walls, is believed to have
opened onto a Saxon Lord’s private gallery. Like many others, this church suffered from the Reformation: monuments near the altar were smashed, along with the original stained glass. Nevertheless, many preReformation relics remained, such as a pair of Britain’s oldest military brass memorials., and these were later complemented by an intricate 18th century pulpit. The last church to see was St George’s, Esher, a Tudor church in Esher’s town centre. It sports a quaint stonework exterior and has a notable original clock, still in fully working order. If St Mary’s had struck me as a fusion, this was an outright amalgamation. Upon entering the church, my eye was immediately drawn to an out-of-place Georgian gallery built into the south wall. This “pew” was built by the Duke of Newcastle. With its own entrance, it enabled the haves to avoid the have-nots when attending services. In a bid to keep things fashionable, the family also replaced all the church’s windows. The church is also known for a Royal connection: one marble memorial is dedicated to the death of the popular Princess Charlotte, who, with her husband Prince Leopold, was a part of the congregation while the couple lived at Claremont House. But many elements pre-date the 19th century. The building possesses an original 18th century pulpit and, impressively, has the original Tudor beams visible above in the roof. All in all, it was a pleasant day spent exploring Surrey’s heritage. It’s clear that the CCT does important work in maintaining our living history. ‘The Seven Ages of Tax Planning’ CHILDREN This is part of our series of articles discussing tax planning at certain periods of life. Children are not just expensive; they also offer opportunities for tax planning! Tax allowances Many people do not realise that children, just like adults, have their own personal tax allowances. This is probably because most of the allowances go unused – and it is fair to say that they go unused, at least in part, because many people are unaware of them! Any child can have income of up to £10,000 without paying income tax. Compared to a parent taxed at 20% this is worth £2,000 a year, or £4,000 if the parent is taxed at 40%, or even £4,500 for parents taxed at 45%. Over eighteen years, even at 20%, this is £36,000. It is not possible for a parent simply to give a child income by transferring assets to the child – such income remains the parent’s for tax purposes while the child is a minor. Approaches that are accepted for income tax are transfers of assets by someone else, for example a grandparent, which produce income that does belong to the child. The rules only disallow gifts from a living parent – so setting up a trust fund for your children in your will can help to add to the family’s net income should you die by reducing the family’s tax bill.
child. This then has tax relief added to it so the pension fund is £3,600. Of course, the child cannot get the money until at least age 55, but some may see this as an advantage building a ‘nest-egg’ for a child’s eventual retirement. If £2,880 is paid in each year for eighteen years it will have cost £51,840. If the fund were to grow at 3% a year after charges, it could be worth over £200,000 when the child reaches the age of 55. If contributions are paid every year, there can also be inheritance tax savings as well. Junior ISA Children under sixteen who did not qualify for a Child Trust Fund can have a Junior ISA. Up to £3,840 (£4,000 from 1st July) can be paid in each year and it works like an adult ISA with no income tax payable on any income. The funds cannot be taken out until the child is eighteen when then they have full access to them. This is one way a parent can transfer money to a child without the income still being treated as the parent’s. Again, if contributions are paid every year, there can also be inheritance tax savings as well. Of course, any of these steps have to be done correctly to ensure they have the desired tax advantages.
Pension contributions Probably even fewer people realise that children can make pension contributions, even if they have no earnings. Anyone can pay up to a total of £2,880 into a personal pension for a

NATURAL INSPIRATION With the help of L&E (Lofts and Extensions), the Hogarty family created this spacious, bright kitchen in just three months. It looks like the kitchen fantasy many of us dream about, but surprisingly, when Louisa and Leigh bought their Surrey home in 2009, extending was not a priority. ”We did some decorating and changed the bathroom but that was about it,” Louisa explains. “But things changed when our first child Jamie was born a year later, and we quickly found out that the
small layout downstairs simply wouldn’t work for us as a family. We didn’t want to move as we love living in this road but when I became pregnant again, we knew we needed to work out a solution. ” After gaining planning consent for an ambitious reconfiguration, the couple set about choosing a builder. “My mum spotted L&E in a
“The team were immediately driven to get the job done. Their work ethic was phenomenal!” local lifestyle magazine,” Louisa recalls. After inviting them round to quote, L&E’s surveyor took the couple to visit two completed projects and one midway through the build. “I could see that they were similar to the work we would like done. I also knew L&E had a big team which gave me confidence that they would finish on time. Their contract included timescales alongside instalment payments too and that again gave me peace of mind.” With only four months to go until her due date, the speed at which L&E could complete the project was a deciding factor in choosing them, and in January, faced with a completion deadline of only 3 months, the team moved in. The project included reconfiguring and extending the interior to create a large open plan “outside in” space. The front of the house was also to be remodelled to give a more contemporary feel as well as converting the garage to make way for an integrated playroom. Louisa recalls “After one day, the foundations were dug and after a week, the kitchen was gone - I was amazed! Even during the snow, they didn’t miss one single day.” Louisa agrees they were fortunate in having L&E on board, who possessed not only experience, but ideas. “It wasn’t just the speed at which they worked. L&E’s foreman was very straightforward and passionate about getting every last detail right,” Louisa recalls. “Even the building control officer who visited to make the required inspections commented on how she loves his jobs!” The foreman advised them that plans for the front porch were slightly off centre which
he was able to amend for a more symmetrical look. He also recommended a kitchen supplier and dealt with them directly to coordinate installation. A third useful suggestion involved sourcing a sample of an alternative cladding to the architect’s choice of facade to give a much warmer, contemporary finish “I’m delighted he intervened and we adopted his suggestions. We felt like he really did want the best for us,” Louisa reflects. In March, a week ahead of schedule, L&E’s team moved out. The family’s new home bears little resemblance to its original 1960’s facade, while the new open plan kitchen blends seamlessly with the garden, providing the very best of modern living. “The layout of our house before just wasn’t working, but now it’s light, bright and I feel that I have loads of space,” Louisa comments. “I paid the same price as other quotes but with the peace of mind that they would actually get the job done in time. We had our bathroom refitted by another company when we originally moved in - it’s amazing to think it took that company the same time to fit one bathroom as it took L&E to complete all of this work!” Mr and Mrs Hogarty are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

A Good Read Armand Wadsworth
Born in Weybridge in 1972, Howard and Austin Mutti-Mewse were raised on a diet of black & white movies. Encouraged by their grandmother, as teenagers they started writing to the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era. I Used To Be In Pictures is a collection of correspondence between Austin and Howard and some of the biggest film stars from the silent and ‘golden’ era of film-making. The brothers’ foray into this glamorous world began with a simple fan letter to Lillian Gish, followed by another to Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. This gave rise to a wealth of letter-writing. Yet, the most interesting part of this story is that Austin and Howard’s unique relationships with these screen legends developed long after the height of their celebrity, a quarter of a century after the cameras had stopped rolling, at a time when they were able to reflect back on lives lived in the spotlight. During the nineties, the brothers were entertained by stars, including Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor who, thrilled at this late recognition, invited them into their homes in California to reminisce over afternoon tea. Accompanied by many intimate and candid photographs of screen icons both at the height of their stardom and in later years, this is a collection for anyone looking for an insider glimpse into arguably Hollywood’s finest hour. Howard and Austin have captured it all in this beautiful book. Mandela. My Prisoner. My Friend. By Christo Brand. Christo Brand was an Afrikaaner farm boy and Nelson Mandela was the black son of a tribal chief who trained as a lawyer to take
up the fight against apartheid on behalf of a whole nation. Their opposing worlds collided when Christo, a raw recruit from the country’s prison service, was sent to Robben Island to guard the notoriously dangerous terrorists there. The two of them, a boy of 18 and a long-suffering freedom fighter then aged 60, could well have become bitter enemies. Instead, they formed an extraordinary friendship through small human kindnesses. When Nelson Mandela’s mother died, he was refused permission to go to her funeral. Mandela, her eldest son, wept with shame and despair. Christo was to witness that despair many times during his years as Mandela’s prison warder. When his wife Winnie secretly brought their tiny granddaughter to Robben Island, it was Christo who risked his own freedom to put the baby in Mandela’s arms. As President of South Africa, he called for Christo and gave him a job in the archives department in Parliament. He invited Christo and his family into his home and advised his two sons on their careers. A few weeks before his death, Mandela made another call, to say goodbye. This book tells the story of their friendship in Christo’s words for the first time. This I find an appealing concept. The Bookshop That Floated Away by Sarah Henshaw. It’s the true story of how Henshaw set up a bookshop on a boat and set out on a bookselling journey for six months. Books were bartered for food, accommodation, bathroom facilities and cake. During the
Books Bought jjourney, the barge suffered a flooded engine, went out to sea, got banned from Bristol and, on several occasions, floated away altogether. This account follows the ebbs and flows of Sarah’s journey as she sought to make her vision of a floating bookshop a reality. Do No Harm. Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery by Henry Marsh. What is it like to be a brain surgeon? How does it feel to hold someone’s life in your hands, to cut into the stuff that creates thought, feeling and reason? How do you live with the consequences of performing a potentially life-saving operation when it all goes wrong? In neurosurgery, more than in any other branch of medicine, the doctor’s oath to ‘do no harm’ holds a bitter irony. Operations on the brain carry grave risks. Every day, Henry Marsh must make agonising decisions, often in the face of great urgency and uncertainty. If you believe that brain surgery is a precise and exquisite craft, practised by calm and detached surgeons, this gripping, brutally honest account will make you think again. With astonishing compassion and candour, one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons reveals the fierce joy of operating, the profoundly moving triumphs, the harrowing disasters, the haunting regrets and the moments of black humour that characterise a brain surgeon’s life. It is an unforgettable insight into the countless human dramas that take place in a busy modern hospital. Above all, it is a lesson in the need for hope when faced with life’s most
difficult decisions. Novelists of books for teenagers and young adults are not afraid to tackle difficult and sometimes controversial issues. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is a beautifully written and riveting look at anorexia. Cassie and Lia are best friends, and united in their quest to be thin. But when Cassie is found dead in a motel room, Lia must question whether she continues to lose weight, or choose life instead. “Brilliant, intoxicating, full of drama, love, and, like the best books of this kind, hope”. Melvin Burgess, The Observer. Heart Break Girl by Malorie Blackman. The new novel from the Children’s Laureate is a companion story to Boys Don’t Cry. Something happened to Mel when she was just a little girl and it haunts her every waking moment. When she discovers that she’s pregnant at seventeen, she’s terrified that the events of the past could reoccur. Suitable for 12+. ‘Blackman is a bold, engaging storyteller whose intellectual daring and clear prose reaches kids whom other authors don’t’ Amanda Craig, Sunday Times The Great Moon Confusion by Richard Byrne. Aldrin the raccoon likes to think he knows it all, and if he doesn’t, he just makes it up. But are the bears in the forest really the reason why the moon seems to be disappearing? A mix of humour, science and psychology make this a winning picture book for the under-fives.

LIBERATE YOUR MUSIC, with We are always looking for innovative and exciting products to add further enjoyment to your digital home and complement the way you use and consume sound, be it music you own from online music sources such as Spotify, Napster, Deezer, Last.FM, or directly from the radio or internet radio. Sonos is a manufacturer who saw the potential in 2002 for wireless high quality sound systems. It has changed the way we enjoy sound, and 12 years later, has some ingenious products which offer fabulous sound quality, total versatility and a huge variety from an unrivalled selection of music sources. With a Sonos system, you can have multiple units located around the home or office; they need to connect wirelessly to a Sonos bridge unit which in turn is connected to your router. Each speaker can be individually controlled or controlled as a part of a group or all units playing the same music. By way of an example, you could have a unit in the kitchen, playing Michael Buble from your iTunes library on your PC, a unit in the lounge streaming Radio 1, a unit in your study playing “The Killers” from Spotify and a unit in the kids’ bedroom playing One Direction, streaming off their Android phone. Each unit can be controlled from a PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone, either centrally or in each room or zone. The devices we will concentrate on at the moment are the self-contained “Play” range of speakers. The setup and use of all of the models are the same, and follow one concept, which is simplicity. Once the bridge is plugged in, press the button on the bridge and the play speaker, and the installation is complete! From your PC, Mac, tablet or/and smartphone, you control the play unit’s volume, tone and playlists in its entirety. With the range of speakers starting at £169.00, it’s a small price for such a huge amount of enjoyment. We have the units on display for you to experience, so if you’d like to find out more, please call in and prepare to be impressed.

Justine is a local mobile beauty therapist who visited me recently at home and treated me to a wonderfully relaxing pedicure from the comfort of my sofa! As well as pedicures, Justine offers a whole range of professional beauty treatments, including massage and facials, waxing and nail care, all of which you can enjoy in your own home. As the spring reluctantly offers up a few sunny days, it’s a great time to give our feet and toes a treat as they come out of hibernation after the long winter months. My feet were pampered, my nails were shaped, cuticles were removed and lovely bright varnish was applied. What a treat for my feet! And it was so nice to not have to put shoes on after my treatment, I could simply carry on with my day and leave the varnish to dry totally.
Justine is really lovely; she has been working locally for a few years now and has been fully trained for seven years. She offers a friendly and professional service and she really cheered up my day. Thank you, Justine, for a much-appreciated treat. My toes still look lovely! To book an appointment, call Justine on 07515 69 52 90 I’m sure shy will be delighted to hear from you. Thank you very much, Justine.

THE NATIONAL GARDENS SCHEME NGS
Each year, the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) raises millions for nursing charities. Most people will have seen or heard of the yellow book and this lists all the private gardens which open to the public, some for just one day a year. There is an easy-to-use website where you can search for gardens close to you so that you can easily plan an outing. You can meet the gardeners and see what they have done in their gardens, get ideas and hear first hand their top tips. There is nearly always tea and homemade cakes. I have recently become involved as a supporter of the NGS and it is a wonderful charity, involving an amazing bunch of kind people. We are opening our own garden on two days in June this year. Of course, opening your garden to the public is a huge pressure and especially as I am a garden designer, so partly my work is up for scrutiny too. Our garden is quite different to many of the gardens I design and I use it to experiment and to express myself. The whole family has been involved too and most family members have helped build or plant or dig. Now that the family no longer needs a trampoline, we’ve made more adjustments, and the latest developments were finished last May ready for our first open garden. The garden is very soft and comforting, with layers of planting surrounding a central lawn. The lawn is relatively large and provides a breathing space and is full of pretty weeds (the only ones I dig up are dandelions). The garden is structured
but still soft and there are several seating spaces, water features, sculpture and ‘his and hers’ garden offices. The NGS are always looking for new gardens, so if you have an interesting garden which you would like to share or if you’d like to have a look at other people’s gardens, get in contact with the NGS via their website www.ngs.org.uk Selina’s own garden at 21 Glenavon Close, Claygate is open on Sat 7th June and Sunday 15th June as part of the NGS Open Gardens. She is an award-winning garden designer and is exhibiting a large show garden for Jordans Cereals at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show from 7th July 2014 If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina Botham for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uK.

MEDICAL MATTERS!!
DIABETES Let’s take a look at diabetes over the next few issues...there is an epidemic that we need to be taking seriously. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) accounts for about 85% of all cases of diabetes and is often, but not always, related to lifestyle. There are strong family links with T2DM and the risks can be as high as 75% for some individuals. With T2DM, we are basically looking at two issues. The pancreas does not produce as much insulin as is needed, along with the body being unable to use that insulin effectively. This is known as insulin resistance and can be the biggest challenge with T2DM. Insulin is needed to regulate blood sugar levels, and a reduced level of insulin that works less efficiently leads to a rise in blood sugar levels. This is usually when a diagnosis is made. However, there are manageable factors which can help reduce the body’s resistance to insulin. The two most common factors contributing to this resistance are a lack of exercise and excess weight, so an increase in activity levels, weight loss and a change in diet can have huge health benefits and may even help renormalise blood sugar levels. Being more active generally and trying to factor this into a daily routine is usually most effective and sustainable. Diet is fundamental to managing diabetes by minimising sugar intake and managing sensible carbohydrate portions. We will be looking at this more in the next issue.... For more info: https://www.diabetes.org.uk
