Welcome to our

SEPTEMBER ISSUE

I hope you all enjoyed a great summer. We had a lovely break here at the Essential Esher office and we are all feeling refreshed and raring to go again! It’s the time of year for new school shoes and pencil cases, for some to start school and for some to leave, for many older students to fly the nest and head to pastures new, a time of many changes.. We wish you all lots of luck with your new adventures! It’s been a summer filled with wonderful local events and we are delighted to share a few of these with you here. The Claygate Flower Show and also The Claygate Country run 5! A great time was had by all. I really enjoyed chatting to a very nice gentleman with a very well known voice during the summer. I met up with David ‘Kid’ Jensen who lives right here in Esher - we shared coffee and chatted about his action packed career. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoyed hearing all about it! David has kindly agreed to write a regular music column for Essential Esher. I am really looking forward to that starting in our next month.

6000 people basked in the sunshine at Saturday’s

Claygate Flower Village Show T he forecast predicted dramatic rain storms, but the Claygate Flower & Village Show beat all the odds and enjoyed hot summer sunshine! An amazing 6000 people came together on Saturday 19 July to kick-off the village celebrations. As they entered the Show, they were greeted by an afternoon of nonstop entertainment - from ‘Waltzing Matilda’ to Bollywood dancing, energetic Zumba to incredible martial arts feats. The Fancy Dress created lots of “Aahs!” from the audience, as under-sevens paraded to the infectious rhythms of a Caribbean Steel Band. Dominic Raab MP presented Playmates Playgroup entry (‘Kings & Queens opening the Commonwealth Games’) with the winning trophy, and awarded second place to a lion and a zebra! It was amazing to see the sheer number of different attractions around the Claygate Rec. At one point, the sky was filled with 1000 brightly coloured (bio-degradable) balloons, representing a rainbow of colours from across the Commonwealth. The brand new Spider Mountain was also a big hit, as adventurous

youngsters clambered up through a maze of webs and then whizzed down a vertical drop slide. Animals were in on the fun too, with the Dog Show, cuddly Shetland Ponies, farmyard animals and exotic creatures to meet and greet. Other visitors admired beautiful classic cars, browsed the stalls village, or relaxed with nail painting and hand massages in the Holy Trinity tent. Over 2000 amazing exhibits filled the giant marquee, including a humorous crocheted homage to Scotland - and a record-breaking 14 men entered the ‘Cake made by a Gentleman’ class! 1000 Junior exhibits also wowed and the judges were bowled over by the incredibly high standard. Nine-year-old Rosa Johnson won the prestigious Best Exhibit Cup, with her wonderful cake iced with 54 flags from every Commonwealth nation. Barry Fairbank, Mayor of Elmbridge, said: “I didn’t realise how many events go on in just this one show. It’s wonderful that the Claygate Flower & Village Show raises money for other community initiatives as well - it’s really heart-warming.”

‘The Seven Ages of Tax Planning’ SPOUSE OR CIVIL PARTNER

This is part of our series of articles discussing tax planning at certain periods of life.

Spouse or Civil Partner This article looks at some tax planning opportunities which are generally available to all those who are married or in a civil partnership (this article refers to spouses, but the rules are the same for civil partners). Equalising incomes If spouses have different levels of income and, as a result, are paying income tax at different rates then there may be savings to be made by trying to equalise the incomes. For straightforward salaries there is clearly nothing that can be done, but investments or bank accounts could be transferred to the lower-income spouse. If you have your own business, then opportunities exist for employing a lower income spouse or for creating a partnership or transferring company shares. These should only be done with care as there are complex tax and other considerations to take into account. Equalising capital gains Each person has an annual exemption from capital gains tax of £11,000. If assets are split between spouses so each makes a gain on the sale two exemptions can be used. Transfers between spouses are not subject to capital gains tax so a re-arranging of assets can be done, however bear in mind the income tax consequences and consider inheritance tax as well.

Great care is needed if the asset is a property which is or has been a main residence as there are opportunities for increasing the relief as well as the possibility of losing it! This is a surprisingly complex area which will be looked at in a later article. Equalising estates for inheritance tax It is not actually necessary to equalise the assets of spouses, but it is important to ensure that each has sufficient assets to make gifts to use up inheritance tax exemptions (such as the £3,000 a year) and to make life-time gifts which fall out of consideration for inheritance tax once the giver lives for seven years afterwards. Non-dom spouses Gifts between spouses are normally free of inheritance tax, but there is a serious trap for anyone with overseas connections. If someone has come to the UK from abroad but retains any connections with their original country it is likely they are not UK domiciled (they are one of the so-called ‘non-doms’). Such a non-domiciled status can have considerable income tax and inheritance tax advantages (including no inheritance tax on gifts of assets outside the UK), but has one large tax disadvantage: gifts from a UK domiciled spouse to a non-dom spouse are not ignored for inheritance tax but are only exempt up to a total of £325,000 for all gifts to a spouse. After seventeen years resident in the UK a non-dom is deemed to be UK-domiciled so the problem (along, of course, with the benefits) disappears. A non-dom spouse can elect to be treated as UK domiciled for IHT to avoid the problem of amounts over £325,000. But this should be used with care.

Mr DJ...

I recently enjoyed chatting to a charming man who has a very well known and distinctive voice! A voice which in fact, I am sure many of you would recognise in an instant and one which could so often be heard in my car, my kitchen and at my friends houses in my formative years.

The owner of this famous voice was none other than Mr David Jenson. Formally known as the DJ David Kid Jensen, David and his family have lived happily in Esher for 37 years and as we ordered our coffee we started exchanging thoughts on the lovely local restaurants and also some of our favourite dog walking spots! It turns out that actually, we both enjoyed talking about our dogs quite a lot! However I felt there were probably other subjects we should cover for the purpose of our feature! So we moved the conversation along & started to chat about David’s amazing career and some of the fascinating people he’s met along the way... That voice/accent I mentioned earlier originates from Vancouver, where David grew up. At school he enjoyed public speaking, and probably started honing his announcing skills even then as president of the Student Council. He also played the trumpet and a little piano but although he loved music and knew he wanted to be involved, becoming a musician wasn’t his calling. When an opportunity to present and make announcements on a classical radio station came up, he jumped at the chance! The show was sponsored by a local funeral director, and announcements took the form of funeral details and arrangements with regard to flowers or donations! The show was

rather strangely named ‘Music for dinning’ I’m sure you can guess what I thought David was going to say it was called! It was here that David met a former Radio Caroline DJ and through this meeting another opportunity arose for David to move on and present a Teen Scene show. At this stage he was still only 16 or 17 years old! During this time David began to really enjoy being a DJ and having been inspired by seeing a scrap book of a fellow presenter showing a whole selection of famous musicians he’d met, he felt it was time to take action. He took a Gap year from his education and started by sending out a ten minute demo tape to a handful of radio stations, including Radio One and Radio Luxembourg. Within a few days Radio Luxembourg came back to him with a job offer on the condition that he could start within the next 96 hours! He packed his bag and off he went! It was here he acquired the nick name ‘David Kid Jenson’ due to the fact that he was the youngest DJ in Europe. Paul Burnett was the name giver but I’m sure neither of them knew just how long it would stick around! Noel Edmonds was also starting out at Luxembourg at the time, he was about 19. In fact all three DJs ended up

working at Radio One later in their careers. From here David’s career really took off ... It wasn’t long before he could be heard presenting regularly on Radio One. In 1980 an offer from the head of CBS in Atlanta caught his interest, so along with his wife Gudrun and young family, he headed off on another adventure! This job was connected to CNN and Turner Broadcasting and although it was a very exciting time and provided an amazing life style for the family, it wasn’t long before they all missed the UK. Offers from the UK soon came, following a stint on Radio 4 presenting a Religious affairs programme which David found fascinating, he was soon being invited back to Radio One. It was at this time that David formed a firm friendship with one of my own personal heroes, the amazing Mr John Peel. The two formed a great team and went on to co-host live screenings of Top of the Pops regularly. After a while a new exciting London station was beckoning. The early days of Capital Radio have left David with so many fantastic memories ... He worked alongside many great radio presenters such as Kenny Everett, Michael Aspel, Roger Scott and Graham Dene to name but a few. In the early days the DJ’s chose their own play lists and David loved the freedom to promote so many new sounds. Over the years he has interviewed virtually all the big names, even touring for a week with The Rolling Stones; interviewing The Beatles and watching them perform on the roof of their Savile Row HQ in London. Presenting a review show with guests George Harrison and Michael Jackson was one highlight for sure! Another, was when on tour with The Rolling Stones their plane

was grounded due to ice and as a result they all got out and played football together to pass the time! David said he remembers thinking ‘If my mates could see me now! Playing football on a snowy runway with The Rolling Stones!’ ‘Kid Jensen’s ‘chart show was very well regarded in the industry; apparently Kenny Everett recorded every single chart show David presented. He neatly labeled them all and filed them in order in his home recording studio! A true compliment indeed. David said that he was always surprised to find out that massive stars like Jimmy Hendrix & Bill Wyman listened to his shows. He said he was glad he didn’t know at the time or he’d have been so nervous! These days David has a slightly quieter time, enjoying life in Surrey with his family. He still keeps his hand in and recently presented shows on Surrey & Sussex Radio. I really enjoyed meeting David Jensen, he is a genuinely charming guy with so many interesting stories to tell. Very kindly, he has offered to write a regular music column for Essential Esher Magazine - I’m delighted! Look out next month for the first of his insightful inclusions.

Thank you so much for your time David it really was a pleasure sharing coffee with you.

NOTEBOOK BUYERS GUIDE

Most schools and universities expect their students to have access to a computer and the internet for homework and coursework. To help you make the correct decision when buying a machine we have drawn up some ideas on what to look for in a notebook and to explain a bit about the terminology. The term laptop or notebook refers to exactly the same machine type, this is a portable PC which can be battery powered. Typically these machines have a display size ranging from 12” to 19” diagonal, with 15.6” being the most popular. Typically a notebook will run off battery power for around 2-4 hours, however, some are now able to run for 8 hours between charges. The average 15.6” notebook will have an inbuilt DVD drive for loading software, film playback and data backup, the smaller machines tend not to have an inbuilt DVD drive, but an external drive can be added. If the machine is running Windows 7 or 8 you’ll need to ensure it has 4Gb ram or more, also ensure the machine has a minimum of 200Gb hard drive, wireless networking. A webcam is often very useful and are almost always inbuilt. The processor or CPU cannot easily and economically be changed, therefore get the best and fastest for your needs. A Celeron, Celeron dual core CPU has limited performance, so if your needs are for word processing and basic internet work it will be ideal, but for more powerful demands it will struggle. For general needs we would recommend the Dual Core, Core i3 and Core i5 processors, for more demanding needs like design and creative work we would recommend the i5 or i7 based processor. Currently we have a range of Core i5 notebooks which are about the same price as the Core i3’s, so buying the Core i5 is a better decision! Typically a good quality, high spec notebook would cost you from £290, but please look at our advert or call in for some great offers we currently have.

The latest notebook design is the super slim, superfast Ultrabook, it enjoys higher performance, longer running battery life and is much smaller and lighter. The Acer V5 is a fantastic example and will only cost £519.00 It is probable that you will also need a printer, antivirus software and the latest Microsoft Office software. If you would like more info or advice contact us, our opening hours are Mon - Sat 9:00-5:30

NEEDS GOOD NEIGHBOURS

When Tristram and Jacqui Lawton decided to extend their period terraced home in Twickenham it was local company L&E (Lofts and Extensions) they instructed to create the family space they were looking for. The arrival of their daughter prompted the couple to look at creating a more spacious home. “The cost of moving is so high to get a four-bedroom house around here, but we realised we could create a proper family home by extending the kitchen and adding a fourth bedroom in the loft, explains Jacqui. The Lawtons had been planning their project for a while when new neighbours moved in next door and announced that they were also planning building work. The two couples decided to appoint L&E to work on both projects at the same time, to save on noise and

disruption in the future. “Other neighbours had used L&E previously and recommended them to us, and even though we did have other companies prepare us a quote, the word-ofmouth recommendations really clinched it for us.” The couple were uncertain about what they were looking for, “We weren’t sure exactly how to configure the space and played with lots of different options,” remembers Jacqui. “One of the most helpful things about L&E was that they’ve done so many conversions on our sort of property that we were able to go and visit houses with a similar layout to ours. Their planner was great at advising what was possible and what they had done elsewhere. They prepared various quotes for the different options and it was really useful to see other homes and different ideas – none of the other builders we saw offered such a useful service. Plus, of course, we got to see work that had been completed by L&E and talk to other customers.” The angled, triangular skylight in the corner of kitchen is one such innovation, as Jacqui explains, “I was worried about this room being really dark and the architect suggested the angled window to flood light in and sent me to a house where they had done something similar. We would never have thought of it ourselves.” Running a project with no prior experience can be a daunting task so the management of the process was another of the things that attracted the couple to L&E. “We found the company reassuring and they were very good at letting us know what was going on and when,” says Jacqui.

Jacqui and Tristram decided to live on site while the build was taking place. “The loft part of the process was great,” says Jacqui, “You wouldn’t have known they were here, apart from a bit of dust. Losing the kitchen was tougher but they built us a temporary one, which was really helpful and made life much easier.” While the team were on site they took on other small projects, creating a bespoke wine rack in space that was discovered, building a spacious storage cupboard, moving a door and installing a downstairs cloakroom. “It was really nice that the team were so flexible and able to do these other jobs for us concurrently. It really helped us to maximise the space in our home,” smiles Jacqui. The job came in on schedule and on budget and the team handed over a space they were really proud of. “At the end of the build, the team did an amazing deep clean, which really helped with the dust,” laughs Jacqui. What more can you ask for – a building team that clean up after themselves? Family life for the Lawtons has improved enormously with the creation of the sociable family space they had planned for so long. Tristram and Jacqui are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

Cheers in Sunday’s Claygate Country Five

It was muddy underfoot, but 440 runners pushed ahead & took part in the Claygate Country Five on Sunday 13 July. The weather held

until the first man crossed the finishing line, & then a brief shower cooled all those coming up behind him!

The five-mile event, on the footpaths around Claygate’s beautiful green countryside, was enjoyed by all - no matter whether they were competing for a place, or taking part just for the fun of it. The crowd was cheering and the runners were spurred on by friendly faces from around the village. Congratulations to all the runners, particularly to the overall winner, Neil Aitken, who ran it in an astonishingly fast 27.43, and Hannah Mae Flynn, the fastest woman, who completed the run in 34.24. Neil Aitken, the overall winner of the Claygate Country Five, said: “The run was great! A bit muddy, but I like the mud - you expect it on a woodland course”.

Christine Coffin, who took part in the Claygate Country Five for the first time this year, said: “It was my first ever running race since school. I was so excited to be running in my local village and I couldn’t wait to see my kids’ faces”. CAR REVIEW Marriages, so the saying goes, are made in Heaven. Well not the one I am about to describe! The one for which I was only too happy to be matchmaker - Italy was its setting. The pairing, a handsome macho eyecatcher and a real stunner of style and elegance, made for a memorable link I shall treasure for a good while. The pairing? Beauty and the beast. The beast? A Jaguar F-type. The beauty? The exquisite Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on the water’s edge of Bellagio, Lake Como. I drove the mightily powerful Jaguar to Italy with Trophy Wife who was on duty at a Milan fashion show buying for her boutique and we opted for a stopover at the Serbelloni. And if the unashamedly admiring glances the F-type stirred in its show-off setting parked in front of the ritzy Serbelloni were anything to go by it was the perfect match! There is no doubt in my mind that the new F-for-fabulous Jaguar is the best car they have made for decades. A hark back to the glory days of the resonant E-type, with its trombone-sized exhausts, it heralds a signature tune of sound to thrill. For my money, quid-for-quid, mph-formph,mpg-for-mpg , the eagerly responsive and utterly safe F-type, as good looking and

comfy as they come, is just the car to rival the twice-as-pricey Ferraris and Astons. It begs the question: why pay an absolute fortune for a car whose performance and style can be equalled for a fraction of the cost of the so-called, mainly foreign, supercars? The F’s responses to my urgent demands for quick overtaking bursts on the autoroutes and its balance along the dodgy narrow lakeside lanes were real confidence boosters. In a choice between the V6S - my tester and the V8,I’d go for the more economical V6S which strikes the best balance and has all the kit and technology you need for a few grand less. I have owned three E-types, one after the other, and if I’d been blessed with the foresight to hold onto them and sell them at today’s value you wouldn’t be reading this because I wouldn’t have been around to write it! I’d be permanently ensconced in the Michelin-starred Serbelloni, with its mountain and lake view restaurant and movie star guests like George Clooney, with TW...

St. John Ambulance are a common sight at public events. The volunteer-staffed charity is wellknown for its work in assisting the UK’s health and ambulance services and providing first aid cover at a variety of venues. Howvever, in spite of the charity’s prominent appearances, some of us in the public may not know all that much about it and its work. Russell Nixon, head of the Cobham unit of St John’s is hoping to adopt a higher profile for the charity within the community, after having been approached by councillors at events in the past who had thought the service had closed down. He wants to let local people know ‘just what the charity is all about.’ Speaking with me, Russell told me all about how the Cobham unit has helped out at fireworks displays, fetes, sports days, and even put aside their building as a treatment centre during the Olympics: Two beds, as well as trained medical staff, were provided during the time trials. The charity relies on volunteers, accepting both adult volunteers and cadets of 10-18 years of age,

with many opting to stay on as adults. Many cadets choose to volunteer with St John for career reasons. One of Russell’s enjoyed her time with St John so much, that she opted to go to the University of Surrey simply to remain close enough to continue volunteering. In addition to covering community events, St John members support the UK’s ambulance service, responding to emergency calls as an auxiliary. Many volunteers work as Community First Responders; trained personnel who keep a mobile phone and first aid kit at home. They are critical in responding to local calls quickly and preparing the victim in distress for an ambulance. These aren’t the only services offered. Two first aid courses are run once a month within the Cobham building. Russell wants it known that ‘we want to train people to be the difference between life and death’ Places can be booked through the website. There’s a rich history behind the Order of Saint John, of which St John Ambulance is a part. They

originated in a monastic order founded after the First Crusade, which was tasked with running a hospice in Jerusalem to assist pilgrims and later became a full military order of the Papacy. The Order saw a steady decline after the loss of Palestine to the Saracens, relocating to Rhodes, Malta and then Rome. It saw a resurgence in the 19th century as its old purpose as a vehicle for aid was reinvigorated. Today the charity, headed by its Prior, is responsible for a variety of good causes and is no longer a solely Catholic Order; Russell himself is a member of the Church of England. Russell first joined the service at the age of 12, after he was directed to St John by the Red Cross; who had no available spaces for a young cadet. 28 years later, Russell is still volunteering as head of his unit; a role which involves a considerable amount of admin. When asked about his proudest moment with the service, Russell remembers driving his ambulance through Cobham and coming to a point where traffic had stopped to a standstill. Russell saw an

injured little girl in the street, she’d been hit by a cyclist. ‘Being in an ambulance, I couldn’t drive past.’ Russell treated her at the scene whilst the cyclist was also attended to. Though it is likely that she pulled through, Russell finds not knowing the precise fate of those he helps is the hardest part of volunteering with St John, as he only meets patients in their worst state. What’s clear is that St John Ambulance performs a critical role in alleviating the burdens on Britain’s health services. In addition, the charity offers no small amount of opportunity for volunteers in Cobham, Weybridge and Esher to give back to the community and accrue transferable skills. Cobham in particular is in need of volunteers. Whether you take a first aid course, volunteer yourself or just donate, this is a local cause that we can all support. For more info about the St John Ambulance, getting involved by volunteering or signing up to a first aid course, please visit www.sja.org.uk or call St John Ambulance directly on 01932 867606. PL ANNING YOUR GARDEN

Local garden designer Selina Botham of Designs for all Seasons gives some advice on how to start planning your garden for next summer. Autumn and winter is a great time to take stock and plan your garden. It’s too late if you leave it till next spring or once your building project is done and the builders have left and you just have a muddy mess of a garden to look out on! Instead take some time now and as flowers fade and growth slows down, it’s an easier time to start taking control and beginning to think about what you do want rather than reacting to your garden once its in it full growing mode! The first thing is to take stock of what you have got. Every garden has its plus points, it may be a beautiful tree or a view, or sunlight streaming in at a certain time of the day. There may be a great connection with your house and even a lovely view behind your house. Look for potential and try and see past the bits you hate. Consider what worked well for you in the garden and what you liked best, which time of the year are you most likely to be out in the garden and what you appreciate and enjoy most about the your garden. How would you like to use your garden

and are there any special places that feel really pleasant to be in? Do you like the sun or a shady retreat? What colours do you appreciate most and what are your favourite seasons? I often find that gardens can be deeply personal and it’s really good to consider if there are any significant memories or special plants that you’d like to draw inspiration from. Then start thinking about what could change and what must change before next summer. Be realistic about how long it takes to plan and build a new garden and enjoy the process. Some people like to go slowly and tackle one part of the garden at a time; others want to get it all done in one go. Whatever your preference, do plan and review and now is an excellent time to start. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina Botham for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site

MEDICAL MATTERS!!

D I A B E T E S & E X E R C I S E Exercise goes hand in hand with diet in the management of diabetes. This is one factor we know that can make an astounding impact on insulin resistance. Just 15 minutes of exercise can re- sensitise your body to use your insulin more efficiently for several hours. Personally I have witnessed significant improvements in diabetes control with a relatively modest increase in exercise with some of my patients. Most people however groan when exercise is mentioned & seem to assume that I mean long & boring (to some!) sessions at an expensive Gym. Not at all! I try to actively dissuade patients from joining the Gym unless they particularly want to. What we are talking about is really just moving more, being more active, getting off the bus a stop early, taking the stairs instead of the lift .....things we are all aware of. This makes a difference . However what this doesn’t necessarily achieve is a good cardiovascular workout. Even so there are some simple ways of achieving this too. We should all be aiming for 15-20 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week whereby our heart rate is raised & maintained for that time. Housework, walking to work, taking a walk at lunchtime all can make an impact. Make your exercise work for you. Exercise can also energise us, lift our mood, lower our blood pressure. A little word of advise though. If you are being treated with insulin or Gliclazide just be aware that an increase in exercise may lower your blood sugar level too much & you may need some advise on how to best manage this please speak to your GP or Nurse if you experience any problems. Nilufer and I, and indeed the whole team, are very passionate about delivering compassionate and personalized healthcare especially at a time when there is a huge spotlight being placed on the NHS and the standards that it can deliver. We believe we are ideally placed to serve the community well, not only due to our professional experience, but also due to the fact we live locally. Claygate is a lovely place to live and we certainly hope to contribute to it’s appeal by providing an efficient and professional service which will be delivered in the heart of Claygate within the Post Office on the Parade.’

Essential Esher would like to wish them both all the very best with their new venture!

Men, Learn to sing! Over the last few years Gareth Malone has helped bring choir singing back into fashion. Now, a national music education charity is providing an opportunity for local men to become singers

with a FREE SIX-WEEK COURSE starting on 1 October.

The North Surrey Barbershop Harmony Club, more popularly known as The Downsmen, will be hosting the Wednesday evening sessions at the Methodist Church Hall in Leatherhead. The Downsmen consists of men from around north Surrey, especially Sutton, Epsom & Leatherhead. Member are of all ages, from those in their thirties to chaps in their eighties! For people who can’t read music they have ‘teach tracks’ that can be downloaded & listened to. Also they sing ‘a cappella’ which means there are no instruments, just voices. There are four different voice parts: leads, who carry the tune, tenors, basses & baritones who create the harmony. The group’s musical director is Lisa who has been conducting & leading a cappella groups in the area for 10-years now. She chooses the tunes, teaches good practice & helps develop individual members to sing & present to their best ability.

If you’d like to attend a rehearsal & just listen or would like to know more about the FREE Learn to sing course, ring Allan Scott on 020 8642 8104 or David Tidd on 01372 723 206. Alternatively, check out the group’s website at www.downsmen.co.uk or The Downsmen Facebook page.
