Welcome to our Festive issue which, quite amazingly, marks my first year anniversary as Editor of The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local! I hope you are enjoying the magazine and that you find it to be a helpful and handy guide to all things local. From this side, it is a total pleasure to produce and we have so enjoyed getting to know many of our contributors over the past year. You never fail to impress us! There is a huge amount of enthusiasm and willingness to give time and effort to the local community. It’s inspirational and makes our job very easy. Thank you. I just can’t believe a whole year has passed and once again it’s time for Christmas shopping and preparations for the festive holidays …. For the last few years, I’ve done most of my Christmas Shopping locally. We are very lucky to have such a wide selection of fabulous retailers to choose from, and what better way to support our local community and businesses? And on that note, our local traders in Fetcham and Leatherhead have shopping events organised for Saturday 1st December and the Ashtead traders are preparing to welcome you for their late night shopping event on Tuesday 4 December. These are always lovely events which bring the community together for some pre-festive cheer and shopping of course! Mole Valley are even offering us all free parking in the Leatherhead Car Parks on 1st December and also in the Ashtead Car Parks from 3pm on the 4th! (details within) There are a whole host of Christmas Concerts and lovely events taking place locally this year and we have enjoyed selecting some gems for you; we’ve packed as many options into our pages as possible. I do hope something takes your fancy! Oh yes, and I mustn’t forget to mention the Charity Christmas Post. This is very well worth using, at 30p per card it will save you some money and help others at the same time! See The Ashtead Residents Association information on page 10. Shopping & Parking Ashtead Traders will be hosting their annual Christmas Shopping Evening in The Street on Tuesday 4th December from 4pm until 8pm & free parking will be available in Ashtead car parks from 3pm. The evening will be an opportunity to browse, shop and enjoy the generous hospitality from the wide variety of businesses that we are fortunate to have in our village. There will be market stalls, sideshows and much more. Children can join in the fun with fair rides, face painting and seeing Father Christmas. As always, we shall be entertained by carol singing and Morris Dancing. Ashtead Rotary Club will be out in force collecting for local charities so please give generously. Following representation by Councillor David Hawksworth (Ashtead Independent Common Ward) the concession for pre-Christmas free car parking in Mole Valley Council car parks has been extended this year to all day on Saturday 1st, 8th & 15th December as an added incentive to shop locally. Any money put into machines during free periods will go to the Council Chairman’s charities. Christmas Card Post Once again, the 7th Epsom Scouts are on hand to save us money. They will be running the community Christmas post scheme at the same price as last year, namely 30p per card. This year deliveries will be to postcodes KT17, KT18, KT19 and KT21. Please note they will no longer deliver to KT20. Please bundle your cards together along with the payment and place them in local post boxes that will be available at the following locations from 30th November: • McColls, The Street • Tesco Express, Craddocks Parade

Civil partnerships to be available to straight couples In October 2018, the Prime Minister announced that civil partnerships will be made available to heterosexual couples, following a Supreme Court judgment earlier this year that there was unlawful discrimination in the current regime. What is a civil partnership?

• A marriage can be annulled if at the time of the marriage

Civil partnerships have been available to same sex couples since December 2005. At a time when same sex couples were unable to marry, civil partnership was introduced as a way of enabling those couples to show their commitment to each other and to have rights and responsibilities similar to those that married couples had. Why is there now perceived to be discrimination? Since March 2014 same sex couples have been able to marry. This means that same sex couples who wish to make a formal commitment to each other can choose whether to marry or enter into a civil partnership. However, under the present law, heterosexual couples only have the option to marry. At one point it was suggested that civil partnerships would be abolished once same sex couples were allowed to marry but that did not happen. To prevent discrimination the law is now being extended to enable heterosexual couples to enter into civil partnerships as an alternative to marriage. What is the difference between civil partnership and marriage?

• Religious organisations are not required to agree to civil

partnerships taking place in religious premises but whilst the ceremony may be religious, the actual formation of the civil partnership remains secular, whereas a marriage can be religious;

• There is a prescribed form of words for a marriage

ceremony whereas a civil partnership is registered by the signing of a civil partnership document. It is not necessary for words or “vows” to be spoken;

the respondent was suffering from a sexually transmitted disease but this is not a ground for annulling a civil partnership;

• If a relationship breaks down, adultery can be relied on

for the purposes of divorce proceedings but not for the dissolution of a civil partnership;

• There is different terminology used in ending a

relationship with divorce or dissolution proceedings taking place;

• Financially, in the event of death or divorce/dissolution, there is no difference in the way that married couples and civil partners are treated.

It can therefore be seen that the differences between marriage and civil partnership are relatively minor. Is this a great step forward in the law for unmarried heterosexual couples? Not really! For those unmarried couples who wish to enter into a legal commitment which is very similar to marriage without actually being a marriage, clearly this is good news. However, many couples in cohabiting relationships (whether heterosexual or same sex) do not understand that they do not have the financial security offered by marriage or civil partnership in the event of the relationship breaking down. For other couples, one partner may simply refuse to get married or enter into a civil partnership because they do not wish to have financial responsibility for their partner, even if the relationship has been long and/or the couple have children together. Extending the civil partnership legislation does not benefit those couples.

CRANBERRY & APPLE MINCEMEAT This is my version and I am delighted with it! As always, trying to cut out refined sugar and keep things deliciously simple and full of taste – get making those mince pies…. My lovely crumbly gluten-free shortcrust pastry and mince pie recipe is on my blog: https://www.beinthekitchen.uk/blog/ - all that remains for me to say, is Happy Christmas everyone!

INGREDIENTS 450g/1lb Bramley apples, peeled, cored & chopped into small pieces 225g/8oz shredded suet, coconut oil or butter 225g/8oz dried cranberries 225g/8 oz raisins

225g/8oz sultanas 225g/8oz currants 110g/4oz whole mixed candied peel, finely chopped 110g/4oz stevia granules grated zest and juice of 2 oranges

grated zest and juice of 2 lemons 55g/2 oz flaked almonds 4 tsps mixed ground spice ½ tsp ground cinnamon freshly grated nutmeg 6 tbsp brandy

METHOD

Mix all the ingredients together, except the brandy, in a large bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and leave in a cool place overnight so the flavours mingle and develop. 2. Preheat the oven to 120°C/225°F/gas ¼. Remove the cloth and cover with tinfoil. Place in the oven for 3 hours. 3. Take out of the oven, remove the foil and stir from time to time as it cools down. When cold, stir in the brandy. Pack into clean, dry jars and seal with screw top lids.

LYP Christmas Celebration LYP has had another exciting year in Leatherhead, Bookham and across Mole Valley. This year we have grown our projects again and are providing more support to more young people locally. This couldn’t be possible without the wonderful support of all our volunteers and supporters. LYP will be hosting our Christmas Celebration on 13th December at our Leatherhead base AllSaints Coffee. This is a wonderful opportunity to share time together, celebrate our volunteers, share stories from the year and vision for the future. This year included some exciting trips. The North Leatherhead Youth Council had a reward trip to Aqua Park. The council meet regularly to give their voice to local issues, this year they met several influential people and groups, and they also took part in social action projects this summer that better their community. The trip was a thank you

and well done for all their hard work. On top of this, young people from BFree Youth Cafe went on the annual beach trip and the London Monopoly challenge! Bookham Youth Project held its second ‘Schools out for Summer’ event on Lower Road rec - with inflatables, craft activities, sports and games all free for local young people. Welcome Jenny! In August we welcomed Jenny to the team. Having grown up locally and just graduated from Moorlands College, Jenny has a real passion for local youth work. Jenny has taken on the role of Bookham Lead Youth Worker, and will be leading the Bookham projects developing activities and projects to support young people in the schools, community and churches in Bookham. LYP are thrilled to have Jenny as part of the team, she’s a wonderful addition and is already leading all our youth work in Bookham. Next time you are in AllSaints Coffee Shop do say hello.

COUNTRY HOUSE SERVICES AT POLESDEN LACEY Hugh Baker and Michael Herbert of Fetcham U3A Industrial Heritage Group lectured Leatherhead & District Local History Society following their research on Polesden Lacey’s utility services in the last century. These helped to make the house ‘fit for a maharajah’. In 1902, the owner of Polesden Lacey, Sir Clinton Dawkins, called in architect Ambrose Poynter and civil engineer Mrs Ronnie Greville Stephen Terry to advise him on rebuilding the mansion and equipping the estate with all modern utilities. Their detailed plans specified waterworks, including a well with galleries, bore hole, tower, reservoirs and mains; hot and cold water supply, drainage and heating apparatus; stables, coach and motor houses with dwellings for the men; and a complete electric light and power station with all machinery in duplicate, and with storage batteries and travelling crane. The work was completed in 1904. Ronnie and Margaret Greville bought Polesden Lacey in 1906 and carried out further extensive interior alterations to make it a ‘house fit for a maharaja’. The bedrooms now had telephones and en-suite bathrooms, almost unheard- of at the time. The baths had no taps: the water rose from the bottom without noisy splashing! When Mrs Greville died in 1942, all her papers were destroyed and most of the house records were lost. Fetcham U3A Industrial Heritage Group has looked at the water supply and electricity generation installed in 1904, along with the communications telephones and indicators - added later. Providing water for the fountains and gardens was as important as for the house. After a new well was dug, water from the old one was used for fountains. Before

1904 underground reservoirs were used to store rainwater from the roofs. They continued to be used, along with an underground rainwater reservoir and a garden reservoir in a small tower, with new pumps. The new system from 1904 provided ten times the previous capacity. A photograph of Polesden Lacey’s engine house with its 20 HP oil engines installed in 1905 to generate

electricity, hangs in the National Trust’s offices. The building remains but there is no record of what happened to the oil engines. However a detailed description in The Engineer journal explained how they worked. Mrs Greville introduced an internal telephone system which first operated before 1913 and was later replaced by a larger system enabling residents and guests to summon servants to rooms throughout the house. Six phones remain today but notes on the electrical plans indicate there may have been more before Mrs Greville died. At next month’s L&DLHS lecture on Friday, 19 January, Tony Matthews will present the story of Cherkley Court and its extraordinary owners Abraham Dixon, founder of the Letherhead Institute itself, Lord Beaverbrook, the controversial media magnate, and subsequent events culminating in today’s exclusive luxury hotel. It’s amazing how beautiful the light is in winter and how spectacular the sky seem to be. Having deciduous trees is good in the winter as they shed their leaves in autumn and give you more sky views. They also allow the winter light to get through. Evergreen trees lose leaves all year round, so rather than making less mess they actually continuously make leaf litter. I’m not saying that evergreens should be avoided, but just used carefully. Too many evergreens can be quite depressing in winter but just the right number creates texture and interest all year and a good balance in the winter garden. Trees and bushes can create lovely shapes, and grasses left standing and studded with the seed-heads of perennials, look beautiful as they catch the low winter light. I try to ensure that they can be backlit with the morning or evening sun so that the planting looks just as interesting in winter as it does in summer. There are a few winter must have plants and my personal favourites are cornus for their stem colour,

witch hazel for its scented flowers and pretty shape; hellebores for their delightful flowers. I also love the scent of mahonia and winter box and amazing early flowering bulbs which seem to defy all sense and pop heir heads through in the coldest parts of the year! There are so many other winter gems to choose and if they are planted where you will see them daily in the winter then they are especially worthwhile. ITS TRADITIONS AND SYMBOLS

Throughout Ashtead and Leatherhead, our homes are soon to be decorated with trees, candles, angels and stars. Lights twinkle at windows, as the excitement of Christmas builds inside and we accessorize our homes with sparkle and joy. But as we hang baubles on our tree, how many of us know how this tradition began and what the many festive symbols actually mean? Rev Richard Jones, Rector of St Giles’ and St George’s Church in Ashtead, explains all: Many of us look forward to the wonder of Christmas. A lovely word to describe amazement, marvel and admiration. To help us to experience this wonder and joy, we follow many traditions. From sending cards to decorating our homes, enjoying special food and exchanging gifts. From the very front door of our homes, the symbolism of Christmas begins. The wreath’s circular shape represents eternity while its evergreen foliage symbolizes growth and everlasting life. Of course, at the centre of our decorations is the Christmas tree. But why do we bring a tree into our homes? We have a German minister, theologian and father of the Reformation to thank. The story is told that one clear, crisp night in

December 1535, Martin Luther was walking through the snow-covered woods near his home. As he walked, the beauty of a group of small evergreens struck him. Their branches, dusted with snow, shimmered in the moonlight. The gifted theologian and teacher was struck with wonder and wanted to share his experience with his wife and children. So returning home, Martin Luther cut down an evergreen fir tree and brought it inside. He then decorated it with candles that he hung from the branches. Tradition has it, that this practice quickly caught on in German homes. Evergreen trees were soon decorated by edible treats such as gingerbread men, sweets and apples covered in gold foil today we enjoy foil-wrapped chocolates. Enterprising glassmakers then began to make small ornaments similar to the

baubles we have today. In 1841, Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, introduced a decorated tree to Windsor castle. And in 1848, a drawing of “the Queen’s Christmas tree at Windsor Castle” was published in the “Illustrated London News” (see illustration). And so began the tradition of Christmas trees…… Queen Victoria decorated the top of her tree with an angel representing the angel who told Mary that she would conceive and give birth to Jesus, the longawaited Messiah. In alternate years, Queen Victoria’s tree was adorned with a star representing the star that guided the Wise Men to Jesus in Bethlehem. From candles in the home to twinkling fairy lights on our Christmas trees, lights represent the light of heaven, which came to transform the darkness of our world. Underneath the tree, presents wrapped in boxes were placed for loved ones. Our custom of giving gifts trace their origin to the gifts that the Wise Men gave to the infant Jesus when their journey following the star led them to Jesus in the stable. Prince Albert is also credited with establishing Boxing Day. He introduced the custom of the Royal family giving and exchanging boxed gifts with loved ones on the day after Christmas. The idea being that Christmas Day is reserved to giving thanks to God for the gift of Jesus. This custom is linked to an older British tradition: since tradesmen would have to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, the servants of the wealthy were allowed the next day to visit their families. The employers would give each servant a box to take

home containing gifts, bonuses, and even leftover food. Rev Richard Jones concludes: “It is fitting that so many symbols we recognize at this time of year are steeped in Christian meaning…but sometimes, in the busy excitement and planning of the season, we can forget this. “We live in an increasingly materialistic society. Perhaps this is why Christmas is sometimes renamed as Xmas. But if we take Christ out of Christmas we’re left with MandS! However wonderful gifts from M&S are, they cannot satisfy our soul cravings. “The true message and wonder of Christmas is that we can know God’s presence in our lives and we hope as many people as possible can enjoy this festive time.” St Giles’ and St George’s Church has a number

of services this Christmas, with something for everyone. GLOW AT RHS WISLEY 1 DECEMBER - 2 JANUARY

Christmas Glow returns to Wisley this winter, offering the chance to explore RHS Garden Wisley after dark and see some of its most iconic features in a whole new light. Following a twinkling trail around the garden, visitors will discover larger-than-life botanical illuminations, and, for the first time, will enjoy atmospheric music to accompany their walk at certain points. Now in its fourth year, the popular event guides visitors around a new route for 2018, taking in locations including the Rock Garden, the Seven Acres lake and the Jellicoe Canal. Jigantics, designers of cultivated illumination, will this year bring a number of brand new blooms to Wisley, including arches of gladioli over the new Wisteria Walk and a bouquet of alliums on Seven Acres. Favourite installations such as the waterliles on the Jellicoe Canal and interactive colour-changing flowers will return to complete the uniquely floral immersive experience. The paved route will take in not only the floral lights, but also a number of Wisley’s most famous and spectacular

trees, bathed in bright colours to showcase their beauty. The magnificent Glasshouse will also be illuminated, where a magical Woodland Realm awaits discovery, with elves, treehouses and Santa’s reindeer all to be found in a beautiful festive display. Look out for sparkling plantfilled baubles hanging from the trees and the towering ‘Christmas tree’ of vibrant poinsettia. Due to popular demand a priority booking system has been introduced for 2018, and all visitors must book a time slot in advance of their visit. Glow 2018 will be open from 4–8pm (last entry at 7pm) every day between 1 December and 2 January except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. LOCAL ROTARY CLUB LIGHTS UP LEATHERHEAD

Leatherhead Pumping Station lit up in purple by Leatherhead Rotary Club on World Polio Day; Wednesday 24th October.

Throughout the evening of Wednesday 24th October, many visitors to Leatherhead, especially those attending the Tanners’ FA Cup match against Hitchin Town, will hopefully have seen the town’s old pumping station lit up in bright purple! This was one of four landmarks around the town lit up in purple by Leatherhead Rotary, as part of a global initiative by Rotary Clubs around the world to raise awareness of World Polio Day and ‘End Polio Now’, Rotary’s international polio eradication campaign. Since 1985, the Rotary organisation has worked tirelessly to eradicate polio from the planet once and for all. At that time, there were over 1,000 new cases of polio every day in over 125 countries around the world. Today, 33 years later, that figure is less than two dozen a year, a reduction of well over 99%, with polio now still endemic in only two countries; Afghanistan and Pakistan. In 2007, Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates, joined Rotary’s fight to eradicate polio by promising to match every dollar raised by Rotary for ‘End Polio Now’, increasing this figure to two-to-one matching in 2013, in support of the World Health Organisation’s five-year Global Polio Eradication Initiative to eradicate polio

completely by 2018. The colour purple is particularly significant for Rotary’s polio eradication campaign and its associated activities, as children’s little fingers are dipped in purple dye immediately after they have been vaccinated against the disease, so as to avoid accidentally vaccinating them twice, thereby wasting precious vaccine! Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Plastics vs Climate Change Apart from climate change, the most serious environmental problem we are facing is the overuse and poor recycling of plastic. The good news is that there is a general recognition across government, the public and business of the issues and that we have to change our practices and attitudes. But it is vastly complicated and will need multiple solutions. Firstly, we must start to really value plastic. The material itself is not evil but its cheapness has encouraged us to use it disposably. Plastic has improved people’s lives immeasurably, making cheaper accessible products for all areas of our lives available to everyone. Just one example is plastic packaging which keeps food fresh and very importantly reduces food waste. A major improvement would be standardised recycling facilities across the UK. The director of Riverford Organics says that at the moment companies can’t do a proper full life-cycle assessment because recycling depends on the vagaries of each council. An alternative for single use plastic is ‘bio-plastic’ which can be made from variety of plants including potatoes and corn-starch. But growing crops for bio-plastics uses land and water, which could otherwise produce food. According to UN environmental auditors, a world without oil-derived plastics would use a lot more of these resources and there could be more droughts as a consequence. They predict an acceleration of carbon emissions from transporting heavier alternatives which were estimated to be 3.8 times more damaging for the planet. Plastics in current use are very light and economic to produce. The UK uses a staggering 13 billion plastic drinks bottles per year! If just half of those were produced using bio plastic made from sugar beet it would surprisingly only use about 2.5% of current sugar beet production. There are two types of these bio-materials – one for composting at high temperatures by a local authority and the other for home composting. The biggest use UK use for bio-plastics will probably be for thin film food packaging. This cannot currently be recycled due to food contamination so composting would be ideal. Riverford Organics have a policy that by 2020 all their packaging will be bio-plastic made from sustainable forest by-products and fully homecompostable. As an experiment, I am trialling at home large bin liners made from corn starch for the kitchen waste bin. I have also added some compostable take away coffee cups and lids, it will be interesting to see how long they take to fully break down, but eventually there should be no harmful residue. I have also bought beeswax wraps (available from Greenwise in Fetcham) to use instead of cling film to cover food. They are expensive but should last at least a year and they do the job well apart from having to remember what’s in the dishes rather than seeing through the clear film! So before rushing into using alternatives to plastics, we need to ensure the whole life-cycle is sustainable and doesn’t increase carbon emissions. The best path to take will probably be a mix of reduced plastic use, finding truly green alternatives and careful disposal and re-use. Plastic pollution is a big problem but it’s important that the anti-plastics campaign does not become a distraction from the bigger issue of climate change. MOLE VALLEY W.I. OCTOBER MEETING REPORT Our meeting this month was an highly entertaining musical evening. Following the usual business which included a last reminder of our quiz night on Saturday 20th October which includes supper and a raffle. The Fetcham Village Hall Fair on November 17th when a board for names to make cakes was circulated. Also discussed was The Fetcham Christmas Fair on Saturday 1st December where we will have a stall to promote our WI. We have decided to sell items that will appeal to the children. These will include fridge magnets which can be made at the Homecraft Evening on Tuesday 16th October. The gardening club will prepare little pots of

hyacinths and small table decorations to sell for Christmas. After a tea break six members of the UKEAHOLICS group played some delightful music on their ukuleles using just the 24 strings. There were songs by The Everly Brothers, Oasis, Creedence Clear Water and many more which we all knew. They finished with a rousing version of Tom Jones’s Deliah to which we all joined in. FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. OCTOBER REPORT Due to a steady increase in membership we will be relocating to the large hall at Fetcham Village from January. Genuinely delighted with the feedback and enthusiasm of all our ladies, this certainly makes our hard work and efforts very worthwhile. It is encouraging to note that with the exception of December our speakers for next year are booked and confirmed, and the new successful audition candidates noted for 2020! The October meeting saw a varied agenda before the return visit of popular Mel Rees with his amusing take on family life, his own in particular, and the everyday trials and tribulations of living in the Surrey/Hants border with his recently acquired dog. During the month we had both the Emlyn Downs and Mole Valley quizzes to attend. Each were well supported and the excellent suppers greatly enjoyed. Our AGM takes place on the first Wednesday in November – we hope for good attendance and a game or two of skittles afterwards. The angel project linked to Leatherhead church has produced some lovely ideas on the theme, and Sheila has kindly promoted this enterprise through our knit and natter group. Catering in the Rumble tea room for the RNLI Christmas Fair on 17th November will keep us on our toes, with proceeds going to the Village Hall. Also into the planning stage is an outside table at Fetcham Christmas Fair on the afternoon of 1st December when Anne’s beautiful craft items, and an assortment of goodies will be on sale at reasonable prices. We meet the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm and would be delighted to welcome new visitors.

ASHTEAD W.I. NOVEMBER MEETING REPORT We welcomed Gwenda Gourlay and Ann Renn from Eastwick W.I. who joined us to oversee the election of committee at our A.G.M. this evening. We were also to welcome a new member and a visitor and we now have over 80 members, showing our move into the larger hall was really necessary. Our AGM went very smoothly, with reports from our Treasurer, Secretary and Co-Presidents, so lots of reminders of events which took place during the past year, including events for the 100 years of Surrey W.I. Thanks were given to the many members of Ashtead W.I. who help with all aspects of our W.I. both behind the scenes, and the more obvious. We were all pleased to see our Co-Presidents were re-elected, and this year’s committee stood again.

‘Things Found in Ladies’ Handbags’. An enlightening and hilarious dip to see how many of the 20 items listed each table could gather! Then a very manageable quiz, with prizes for the winning tables. Looking ahead, as always we will be carol singing in Ashtead for the Princess Alice Hospice, and have been reminded to take working torches and warm clothes, after which we look forward to the welcome hot drinks at a member’s home. We will be having our popular Christmas lunch locally, and the December meeting (with Secret Santa) will be on Wednesday 5th December, when we will be entertained by the Swan Handbells of Leatherhead. ASHTEAD TOWNSWOMEN’S OCTOBER MEETING REPORT FROM VAL CROWHURST

This was our 73rd birthday anniversary meeting and we had a very tasty iced fruit cake with the TG logo on it, made by our Vice Chairman Di James and shared amongst our members, all of whom enjoyed it. Chairman Val then introduced our speaker Steve Poole with ‘songs of the sea’. This was about the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a charity which takes people with a variety of disabilities and backgrounds on the Tall Sailing Ships of which there are two called Lord Nelson and Tenacious. He had photographs, slides and a short film to explain how the ships are specially designed so people with a variety of disabilities can be fully involved in crewing the ships. Steve also sang some songs of the sea and we joined in with the ones we knew.

It was great to see how much, people with many disabilities could do, including hoisting wheelchairs to the platform in the sails and a blind person at the helm thanks to a speaking digital machine. That gave the pilot a bit of a surprise when he came on board to take them into harbour!! Having thoroughly enjoyed this presentation the meeting continued with business and notice of future events. Such as the November meeting being a Christmas Themed one (as we have no meeting in December) with a Christmas hat competition and a Christmas themed raffle and a sing along to Christmas CD’s. The speakers’ subject is a ‘Christmas Cracker’ and we also have a New Year Party on 4th January.

On the bedside table was the ‘To Do List’ she’d written the night before. Ruth ignored it and went down to make tea. At the top of the stairs her bare foot came down onto a puddle of water and a very soggy carpet. Ruth was still half asleep and not sure what to make of this. Why would the carpet be wet? Had one of her children spilled a glass of water? Or worse? She called out to Sam. “Darling, there’s a puddle of water at the top of the stairs!” Sam grunted sleepily from the bedroom while Ruth explored a little further. It quickly became clear that water was falling with a persistent drip through the light fixtures above. Ruth called out with significantly more urgency. “Sam, there’s water coming through the ceiling!” This time there was a very impressive reaction. A naked Sam leapt to his feet and flew towards Ruth. “Bucket!” was the only word that he yelled as he pulled the loft hatch open. “Bucket!” Ruth didn’t much like his tone but ran downstairs towards the garage. As she went into the living room, the scale of this Christmas disaster was revealed. Water was also seeping down the wall and trickling onto a large pile of beautifully wrapped presents. Ruth frantically tried to move them out of the way. “Bucket!” was the ongoing cry from upstairs, a little fainter this time as Sam was now in the loft. Ruth hoped that he’d taken a moment to put on a pair of trousers. There were lots of wooden rafters up there and it was full of potential splinter hazards… “I’m coming! I’m being as fast as I can. They’re in the garage.” “Towels!” “I’m downstairs… I’m getting a bucket! The towels are

upstairs! I’m not bloody Wonderwoman!” Ruth yelled from the garage, confident that Sam couldn’t hear her from there. She found two buckets behind the freezer and raced upstairs. Ben, Daniel and Sarah were out of their rooms and trying to help. Daniel had taken towels from the airing cupboard and was trying to mop up the water from the bathroom floor. Unfortunately, out of all the possible towels, he’d chosen the brand new fluffy white ones with their price tags still attached. Ben emptied out the bathroom bin all over the carpet and was holding it under the light fitting. Fortunately he was astute enough to shout at Sarah who was just about to turn on the light switch. Shops had & Services Sam always been quite good at DIY and Ruth admired him for his practicality. This Christmas her admiration was immense. Her ‘handy’ husband managed to turn the water off and repair the loose joint on the pipe before it completely burst apart. Disaster was averted without the need for a plumber. As the day wore on, they evaluated the damage and tried to salvage as much as they could. Sarah used the hairdryer to ‘blow dry’ the presents and only a few had to be replaced with a last minute dash to the shops. The following day, they were ready for their Christmas guests. The carpets and walls were stained and a few strips of wallpaper were peeling off. The light fittings were hanging off the ceilings and buzzed precariously if switched on. However, lamps, candles and twinkling tree lights made the living room look beautiful. Christmas dinner was delicious and all the family enjoyed their slightly damp presents. Surprisingly, not even Sam’s mother commented on the pervading smell, evocative of a wet dog after a long and adventurous walk.

‘Tombland’ by C. J. Sansom (£20.00) C. J. Sansom fans have been waiting for years for the 7th Shardlake novel and they’ve been amply rewarded in this huge tome. Shardlake travels to Norwich in 1549 on a clandestine mission on behalf of Lady Elizabeth where he and his assistants (Jack Barak and Nicholas Overton) are caught up in a peasant’s rebellion. He discovers that the murder of Edith Boleyn which he is investigating may have connection reaching into the heart of the rebel camp and of the Norfolk gentry.. ‘Snap’ by Belinda Bauer It is difficult to read this book without feeling totally charmed by it. This new murder mystery by Belinda Bauer deftly interweaves a West Country cold case, a teenage master burglar, some ill assorted coppers and a pregnant wife into an intelligent mystery murder with a rare blend of humour and darkness. A highly individual book set in rural Devon in the blazing sunshine which I thoroughly enjoyed and am now reading her other books all available of course in the Cobham Bookshop. ‘The Winter Soldier’ by Daniel Mason Opening in the winter of 1915, this is a graphic war and romance story. Lucius, a young idealistic medical student from Vienna enlists in the army to help the wounded. He is thrown in to the horror and challenges of an isolated field hospital in the Carpathian Mountains. It lacks even the basic necessities of food, medication or fuel to provide heat. Lucius is intrigued by those soldiers who are suffering from shell shock. He wants to heal them, not merely patch up their physical injuries to return them to the battlefront. With limited practical experience Lucius has to quickly learn, hampered by having broken his wrist just prior to leaving. He is taught and guided by Sister Margarete, the nun who has been nursing the wounded and keeping the hospital going. Their relationship develops from the shared battle to care for patient’s physical and mental wellbeing, in particular that of one severely traumatized young man, Horvath. Torn apart by the war, Lucius desperately seeks to reunite with Margarete in its aftermath.

THANK YOU! A COMPLETED MISSION! You may well remember articles in previous Look Locals about Aprender, Bookham’s International Education Charity, and their work in Lebanon supporting Syrian refugee children.

Refugee children engage in active learning during outdoor time at the preschool in Chouf.

Aprender’s Early Years Consultant, Rachael Underwood, created a course which she co-delivered with Phil Hawkins, CEO and founder, to enable a group of community volunteers to open a brandnew preschool in the mountains of Chouf in central Lebanon. Well, the course has now finished and the wonderful new teachers have all received their graduation certificates. “It’s been so exciting to see the transformation in both the children and the teachers.”, said Phil, “When the children arrived on their first day back in November 2017, we saw trauma in their faces.” Since then, Rachael and Phil have delivered 12 days of training spread across the year thanks to donations from many folk in Bookham, Fetcham and further afield. Phil goes on to say that “The generosity of our supporters has enabled us to deliver quality training for free so that vulnerable children get a boost to the start of their lives. You can see the excitement of learning in their eyes now. The teachers are thrilled to see the progress in such a short period of time. It was such a pleasure working with the team as although the course really stretched them, they rose

to the challenge and are now offering a loving environment that will change the futures of so many lives.” Rachael and Phil spent their final three days in Chouf in October. A new development has been the opening of the first Primary School classroom as some of the older children now need to progress! What happens next? Bookham and Horsley Rotary Club have raised funds to help Aprender take this initiative to the next level. Rachael will be returning to Lebanon across 2019 to train and equip some of the team to become coaches so that the training can be replicated in other locations where needed to boost this essential child development phase for refugee children. Aprender also work in other locations and shortly will be travelling to Brazil to work with education in poor communities. Watch this space!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR - HOPEFULLY!!

It would have been easy to re-visit all the usual crime reduction advice that I tend to mention leading up to Christmas! General home security; making your home look occupied when you are away and not leaving wrapped presents on display are all still important but….this year, I would like to focus on some of the other types of crime that can be very prevalent. It is easy to get quite stressed during the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year and that can make people vulnerable to opportunistic theft. For example, if you are hurrying back to your car after shopping and someone asks if the £5 they are holding belongs to you, please don’t be distracted. It is quite possible that, while you are checking your wallet or purse, another person is pickpocketing from the other bags you may be carrying!! When shopping in busy stores, always make sure that you know where your purse or wallet is and that it is safe. If you have a handbag with a long strap, consider wearing it across your body and make sure that the zip fastening is closed. Men’s wallets should also be kept in an inside coat pocket and not in the back of jeans or trousers, where they can easily be “lifted”. Buying gifts online? If a message pops up on your screen, telling you that there is a potential virus on your computer and asking you to click on a link or call a number - DON’T!! Just log off and do something else

and try again later. This is a common method being used by cyber thieves to access your personal details or “blackmail” you into paying money to them via credit or debit cards! The theft of tools from work vehicles seems to be becoming more widespread and the impact this can have on someone’s livelihood can be huge. With work vehicles and vans being parked up over the holiday period, they can be vulnerable to being targeted. Ideally, I would like everyone to remove all tools from their vans but accept that this isn’t always going to be practical. Putting a battery-powered, motion activated audible alarm inside the van can be an effective (and very noisy) deterrent against theft. We have also seen instances of people going door-todoor, selling “high-quality” leather goods or knife sets and giving the reason that they are returning home to their own country for Christmas and cannot take these items on a plane. They are almost certainly stolen and the “high-quality” leather is more than likely fake. No one should be drawn into buying things from doorstep sellers and the basic rule of “Not sure don’t open the door” is a good one to follow. Hopefully, none of you will have to deal with any of the situations described above and I hope that these simple reminders will be of some help? Are you aware we have a Digital Buddy every Thurs 2-4pm? A digital buddy is able to help with computer queries, using the branch PC, their own laptop or tablet. If you would like any computer related help, then please book a slot at the desk or ring 0300 200 1001 and ask for Ashtead Library. Weekly Rhymetime Session This is a great opportunity to have fun with your baby/toddler through rhythm, actions and singing and introduce children to all the library has to offer. The Rhymetime session is available on Friday 10:15am for 30 minutes. Places are limited so please arrive early.

Maybe the Christmas preparations are getting a bit too stressful? We’ve got lots of novels to help you wind-down. Sarah Perry has a new novel out called ‘Melmoth’; or if you follow the popular Shardlake novels by C J Sansom, you will want to read the latest in the series, ‘Tombland’. Have you heard of ‘Lagom’? A few years ago people were talking about ‘Hygge’, a Danish concept of cosiness and living well. Now we can find out about ‘Lagom, the Swedish Secret of Living Well’ in a little book by Lola A Akerstrom. Do you need to occupy children? We have a range of colourful stationery and sticker books for sale.
