From the Editor Welcome to Look Local in March!
Bring on the Spring I say! It must be nearly time for the flowers to show their faces again? I actually planted some tulip bulbs last year so I can’t wait to see them! That is if I planted the bulbs the right way up of course! Not a natural horticulturist as you may have gathered! We have lots of interesting articles for you to read this month! The Meeting Place Community Hub opened its doors in January; a really great place for local people to go and find information and support. The Hub will be open 3 days a week at the moment and the Citizens Advice Bureau will be holding drop in sessions there once a month too (see inside for more details). I enjoyed a lovely afternoon at Simply Scones which is located at The Grange in Bookham; this lovely tea shop offers the most delicious afternoon tea. Do take a look at the photos I took and read all about my visit. I bet you will be very tempted to pay them a visit one Tuesday afternoon. Did you know there is a fantastic local charity who ‘up cycle’ unwanted and used furniture? Find out more about the Woking Community Furniture Project in this issue. What a great idea this is! We also have an interesting submission from the BRA about a proposal for a Parish Council. Do we really need this in Bookham? See page 19 and decide for yourselves. Finally, do remember it’s Mothers Day on 15th March! Go on, spoil your Mum; I’m sure she deserves a treat! (I do hope my three sons agree!)
Warmest regards,
Ros Thomas Editor

aybe you are moving home or just downsizing and need to dispose of unwanted household items? If you can’t give them away to family or friends, then please think of some alternatives before rushing down to a local tip when you could be doing something more enjoyable with your precious spare time. Surrey has numerous furniture re-use charities that will collect your unwanted furniture, electrical and household items, usually for FREE! Just ring your local charity. Contact Surrey reuse network
www.surreyreusenetwork.org.uk Or you can ring 0800 082 0180. If you live anywhere in the UK outside Surrey, visit
www.frn.org.uk By reusing items in this way you can do your bit to help the environment and reduce landfill! We waste too much. BE AN ECO WARRIOR! Furniture recycle charities will resell your donated items at a fraction of the cost of a new one to anyone on a tight budget. You can pick up some really good bargains too! They are open to all. Perhaps you are an individual or family on hard times and need household items and are strapped for cash. Buying good quality reused items will help make ends meet. If you are receiving benefits or suffering financial
hardship, you can get further big discounts. Under some circumstances items can be given away FREE to those in desperate need or in crisis. If you think you qualify, contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau, or contact me direct at Woking Community Furniture Project
wokingcfp@gmail.com or 01483 750005 Monday to Saturday 0930-5pm. Volunteers are the backbone of most charities who rely heavily on the time and skills of those who help. I
t was a real treat and a total pleasure to revisit ‘Simply Scones’ at The Grange this week. Open every Tuesday afternoon, this delightful local tearoom offers a ‘Scone of the Month’ and tea in the lovely conservatory within The Grange building. Freshly made and very delicious scones are served and made by the clients each week. This month’s specialty scones were ‘strawberry and white chocolate’ but also on offer were regular scones and the most amazing chocolate cake as well! Tea was served in pretty, traditional china teapots and proper cups and saucers too! Portions are very generous and the service was second to none. I am told that the teashop is looking forward to the
arrival of some very smart new tables and chairs next week! ‘The Piscatorial Bowling Association’ purchased this new furniture for The Grange, after one of their members, Chris Carless, suggested The Grange as a beneficiary to the group. I’m sure they will look very smart in the conservatory tearoom and will be enjoyed by many for years to come. Look Local highly recommended afternoon tea at Simply Scones. ‘It is well worth a visit, very relaxing and has a lovely atmosphere too.’ All Proceeds will go to this truly wonderful local charity. Thanks must go to Joanne, Maria & Marianne pictured above with some of the delicious menu options!

e are delighted to announce that on Tuesday 13th January 2015 The Meeting Place Community Hub at 42 Church Road opened for the first time. It will initially be open three days a week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am-4pm. The Hub is a place for all the community, young and old. It is a safe and welcoming place for people to come to find information and support. Many local organisations are linking in with us and we hope to partner with as many groups as possible to help the community in various ways. We sell good quality second-hand children’s clothing (0-12yrs), toys and games, adult and children’s books and CDs and DVDs. We have very comfy sofas for people to sit and chat with friends over a cup of tea or coffee and a small play area for children to enjoy. Our information area offers useful advice on local organisations such as Help your Neighbour, the Leatherhead Foodbank, CAP (Christians against Poverty) and ESDA (East Surrey Domestic Abuse).
The Citizens Advice Bureau will be holding a ‘drop-in’ on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 2.00-3.30pm and The Surrey Hubs (supporting those with disabilities) will be with us on Wednesday 18th March 10-12noon. Please feel free to come along for advice, support and a friendly chat. Surrey Youth Services have partnered with The Meeting Place and the local churches to run a Youth café every Monday from 4-6pm at The Community Hub. The café is a welcoming place for all young people from Year 7 and above and will be staffed by qualified youth workers. For more information about The Meeting Place Community Hub, please call 07425 133431 or email us at themeetingplacebookham@gmail. com To help us fulfil our vision for the future of Bookham, we would like to invite you to become a Friend of The Meeting Place and ‘find where you fit’. ONE BULK BAG OF LOGS FOR £40.00
DOES BOOKHAM
NEED A PARISH COUNCIL?
CASE IS TO BE MOUNTE D B Y A GROUP L E D BY T REVOR S OKE LL
A
case as to whether or not Bookham would be better served by having a Parish Council is to be mounted by a group of individuals led by Trevor Sokell, The aim is to provide Mole Valley District Council with evidence of sufficient electorate interest to start what is called a Community Governance Review after which if there is sufficient local support would result in the formation of a Parish Council for Bookham. Having a Parish Council creates a third tier of Local Government which has the power to raise its own tax (a precept) and carry out limited activities for the benefit of the Village. This is the second time in the last twenty years where this opportunity has been raised. The last time being in 1994 when this issue was rejected locally, the main concern being the increase in tax. Bookham like Leatherhead, Fetcham and Ashtead at the local level have Residents Associations involved as interested parties in their civic affairs alongside and in partnership with the District Councillors. The difference between a Parish Council and a Residents’ Association is that the latter is a completely voluntary organisation, has a membership base (at present the Bookhams Residents’ Association has over 6,500 members) and not electorally based participants. A Parish Council is elected by residents on the Electoral Register and funded through Council Tax. The average local parish tax
across the UK for a Band D household is around £50 per annum and would be in addition to the £1564 currently due in Council tax on a Band D house in Bookham The arguments for and against the establishment of a Bookham Parish Council are principally these:
FOR · Greater democracy as all people on the electoral roll vote for a Parish Council. · More money can be raised for local civic causes. This money for a local tax will not be capped as is the case with District and County tax raising powers (Currently 2% unless a referendum is called to demonstrate local support for an increase above this percentage)
AGAINST · An additional level of government, bureaucracy and associated costs. Additional taxation and more local costs as some simple responsibilities are devolved to the Parish Council. The opportunity for a Council to bring in substantial increase in local charges if it seems fit. The Bookhams Residents’ Association will be helping to facilitate this debate and discussion within the community and you can contribute either by e-mail to: publicity@bookhamresidents. org.uk Call our 24 hour telephone message line: 0300 030 9890

12 giant field mushrooms, wiped clean if necessary
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6.
1 tbsp bacon fat, dripping, coconut oil or ghee 1 small onion ½ red pepper ½ yellow pepper 100g spinach leaves 450g/1lb sausagemeat 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 tsp dried sage, oregano or thyme (or 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs if you have them) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
GARLIC
2. Place the mushrooms on a baking sheet with the cup side facing down and bake for 10 minutes (just enough time for some of the moisture to release from the mushrooms). 3. Put the onion, red and yellow pepper in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. 4. Heat the bacon fat (or other oil/fat as preferred) in a large saute pan. Add the onion and peppers and cook over a low heat until soft (about 5 minutes). Add the sausagemeat to the pan, increase the heat and cook until little or no pink meat remains, stirring to break up any large chunks of meat. 5. Whizz the spinach in the food processor until finely chopped, then add it to the pan with the garlic and dried herbs, mix together and cook for a couple of minutes. Season with salt and pepper. 6. Place the mushrooms, cup side uppermost, in a shallow baking dish or roasting tin. 7. Pile the filling into the mushrooms, then return to the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown on top. 8. Serve for breakfast, lunch or supper and with sweet potato mash if you like!

GARDENING A T T E R S
M
W
e’re into the gardening season, so it might be prudent to flag up something which isn’t always very well known by gardeners, namely which plants are poisonous. Several garden plants are deadly, and one of these is aconite.
Aconitum napellus, also known as aconite, monkshood or wolfsbane, is a poisonous wild plant with dark purple flowers. It’s very common in the UK, growing in gardens around the country. Symptoms of aconite poisoning appear quickly and include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, hypotension, chest pain, palpitations and numbness of the face. In severe cases, the numbness can spread to the limbs, and muscles can weaken. It can also cause abnormal, rapid heart rhythms and can stop the heart from beating. Recently, the coroner dealt with the case of Nathan Greenway, a gardener at an estate in Alton, Hampshire, whose legal team believe he’d touched wolfsbane. He collapsed and died from multi-organ failure five days after being admitted to hospital. Doctors were baffled by the cause of death, and it was only after Nathan’s father began his own investigation that a link with wolfsbane was made. In Greek mythology, Medea poisoned a cup of wine with wolfsbane in an attempt to kill her lover, Theseus. It’s also the method that Leopold Bloom’s father, Rudolph, used to kill himself in James Joyce’s Ulysses, and it’s featured in the TV series Midsomer Murders. Despite growing wild in Britain, the plant is rarely identified as a cause of death. Tom Wells from the Chelsea Physic Garden considers wolfsbane to be one of the most dangerous plants found in British gardens: the highest level of poison is in the
roots, although it’s still found in the flower, and if there were cuts on Nathan’s hand, it would have entered his bloodstream and affected his heart very quickly. The poison leaves the body within a day, so it’s paramount that blood samples are kept. Other poisonous plants found in gardens include: Atropa belladonna, or deadly nightshade. Its berries contain alkaloids - a couple will cause hallucinations, but eight will be fatal. Digitalis, or foxglove. The roots, sap, flowers, seeds, pollen and leaves of foxglove are all poisonous, even when dried, so beware a plant pod exploding and emitting spores/pollen: inhaling them can cause trouble too. Conium maculatum, or hemlock. Contains poison that works on the central nervous system, and ingestion can result in collapse or death. Brugmansia, or angel’s trumpet. The entire plant’s poisonous, with the main toxin scopolamine causing nausea, dizziness and death. Laburnum, or golden chain. All parts are poisonous, and can be lethal if consumed in excess. Agrostemma githago, the corncockle. Thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in July. Can cause death by touching. NB the seed is on sale at Crocus! So please, stay safe. Wear gloves at all times when gardening, and wash your hands ASAP after coming in. We really don’t want a reduced readership….

Sadly, the B-Side has now gone the way of so much to do with the Vinyl age. The idea of holding a single or album & studying the cover art or perhaps exploring the lyrics while listening to a record all belong to an era when pop music was the epicentre of youth culture. Sometimes artists would record a couple of minutes of nonsense on the flip side of a highly anticipated A side like Tracey Ullman’s hit ‘They Don’t Know’ was backed by a song entitled ‘The B-Side’ and featured Tracey in a variety of comical monologues, many of which bemoaned the perceived uselessness of B-Sides. Sometimes a bit more respect was exercised and care was taken to record something special. The purchaser would then get a bit more value for their money, getting two songs for the price of one. Notable B-Sides include one of the greatest songs ever, The Beach Boys ‘God Only Knows’ which was the flip of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’; and The Rolling Stones epic ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ was relegated to B-Side status with the A-Side being ‘Honky Tonk Women’. On a few occasions, the B-Side turned out to be the more popular song. Often it was because a radio DJ preferred the B-Side to its A-Side and played it instead. Examples of this include ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor (originally the B-Side of ‘Substitute’), ‘Maggie May’ by Rod Stewart which was originally the flip of ‘Reason To Believe’; and Van Morrison, with his band, Them, recorded ‘Gloria’ as the B-Side to ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ , and on it went. If you still have some vinyl singles lying around, perhaps it might be worth investigating your own B-Sides: you never know what you might find. A voyage of discovery awaits you…

Winter Garden My garden in the winter is not a thing of beauty. I always mean to clear it but it’s such a boring duty. When I look out of my window I really wish I had, As all the beds and flower heads are looking very sad. However there’s an upside which never should be lost, For magic comes each morning when there has been a frost. A world of white entrances and changes everything And when I put the bird food out I hear a robin sing. Old pots that still have summer plants ought to have been emptied But somehow their clearing has always been exempted. But look, is that a ray of hope? I see some bulbs appearing – Surely that must be the patch I did get round to clearing. And there beneath the untrimmed rose, the pansies show their face So I must have had a sudden urge to clear that little space. All’s not lost and somehow in spring it will turn out That my garden’s looking glorious, a real turnabout. And at the end of summer I will definitely clear Old plants, so it looks good for beginning of next year. Penny Clarke Penny has recently written a book Rhyme and Reason and it is available from her at £4 plus £1 P&P by sending a cheque made out to ‘Penrose Clarke’ to 39 Crabtree Lane, Bookham KT23 4PJ. Any profits will go to the charity CLAPA which helps those with cleft lips and palates.
Ghosts The island in the road beyond my gate, encircled by a single chain, with posts, holds pointed cypress trees, where stand in wait unseen, unnamed, but everlasting ghosts; the cat that hunted here long years ago, the field mouse cowering beneath the grass, a host of pale blue violets, where the slow and silver-trailing snail would lightly pass . Sometimes a child will run to find a ball that rolled beneath the philadelphus bush and, stooping low, he may detect a small faint murmur of the past within the hush. Somehow I like to know the ghosts are there, embracing the whole island in their care. Sylvia Herbert

LOW C O S T PRINTING IS HERE....
We have often talked about our ongoing love/ hate relationships we have with inkjet printers, their running costs verses their purchase prices. Yes it is possible to buy a great wireless printer/copier/scanner for £50.00, but if you use it extensively you will find it very costly in the long term due to the cost and capacity of the inkjet cartridges. As a rule of thumb we say if you are replacing your cartridges more frequently that once every two months you have the wrong machine and it will be costing you too much to run. We are pleased to inform you that Epson, the world’s largest inkjet printer manufacturer, have been listening and do have a very viable solution for you. It is called the Ecotank. The Ecotank system is a printer available in two models both with a very large ink cartridge capacitiesin fact enough ink for 4000 mono pages and 6500 colour pages, with the cost of replacement ink cartridges less than £9, yes that’s right £9.00 for 6500 pages - it is a real bargain.

PEUGEOT R E V I E W
T E D M AC AU L E Y T E S T D R I V E S T H E N E W P E U G E O T R C Z - R
Trust the French. Oh-La-La.Only they could be daring enough to shape a car featuring a sexy doublebump derriere-like roof. It is the RCZ-R, a curvy eyecatcher, the first model from Peugeot’s Paris-based motorsport HQ, makers of their Le Mans race challengers, and a surefire winner for those amongst us looking for an example of offbeat pleasure. In practical terms the new RCZ-R is the most mighty French car on the planet with a wow of a maximised 1.6-litre engine, a turbo four-cylinder, that roars out 266 bhp and guaranteed to thrill. My test car was pristine white, a glowing reminder to drivers ahead of me and looking into their rearview mirrors, that I was on my way with a tingly growl from the exhaust pipes for them to hear when I’d gone past. This RCZ range-topper,the R, a really impressive face-lifted improvement on the original and a surefire success, combines style with uniqueness and a really welcome
economy of running costs. Peugeot may have been at a standstill for too many years, content to flood the market place with standard and, let’s be honest, boring transport - but not any more judging by the RCZ-R. The “R” could stand for many descriptions...rapid, racy and reeking with refinement.I would settle for refreshing. My week in its company was a joy. Whether I was cavorting around Lake District lanes or on the motorways, both crowded and emptyish, to get me up there, it was good behaviour personified, with obedient responses to whatever I asked of its front drive, both in the teeming wet and the dry. And the sumptuous plush bucket seats, surely the best in the sports
car business, were havens of comfort and security on my 400 miles or so round trip. But it is important to remind oneself that this is strictly a twoseater despite a pair of the tiniest rear seats which are hopelessly hardly worth the description and which are useful only for a wee bit of extra luggage storage space certainly not to accommodate even one mini-sized adult, never mind two. ‘Reading Well’ is a national scheme of recommended reading to help treat mild to moderate mental health conditions, now including dementia and dementia care. The new titles should improve people’s understanding of dementia in all its forms. The ‘Reading Well’ books can be very effective when read on their own, or when used with prescribed medication, counselling or therapy. There is material to help explain the condition to children, carers, and people with learning disabilities, to name a few. It provides coping strategies for the recently diagnosed and activities to share, with those most severely affected, to help people live well with the condition.

BURGL ARIES OF D OMESTIC DWELLINGS
W
hen considering what to write about this month, it would have been so refreshing not to feel the need to focus on an issue that still continues to cause immense distress to people when it happens. I am speaking, of course, about burglaries of domestic dwellings - as well as thefts from garages, sheds, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. Sadly, it is so often the case with burglaries that many homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in – they gain easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all, cases we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level. Even when rear windows and doors have been locked – but the keys have been left in the locks or clearly visible nearby - we have found that burglars have gained easy access simply by breaking some glass and turning the key!! Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to a would-be burglar. Apart from the obvious guidance to ensure that homes and property are locked up securely, it is often the case that a property that looks unoccupied is a more vulnerable target than a home that looks as if there is someone at home. That is why I emphasise, once
again, the benefit of using timers to bring on lights when you are not at home. Ideally, you should have lights coming on in different rooms at different times to mirror, as much as possible, your normal patterns of movement. Basic timers are relatively inexpensive (I have seen three for £10 in one local DITY store recently) and can make a big difference in creating an impression of occupancy within a home. Also, I would reiterate that, as the dedicated Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley, I can offer free, impartial and costeffective advice that can help to protect your home and property and make it more secure. That is probably the most rewarding part of my job and I feel strongly that it is important to help people make their homes and property more secure and less vulnerable to being targeted by a burglar. All you have to do to contact me is to call 101 and ask to be put through to me by name. My extension number is 30809. Alternatively, you can call my direct line on 01483 630809 or email me at Neil.Clarke@surrey.pnn.police.uk I always focus on practical advice that is cost-effective and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not endorse specific companies but can guide you towards what should meet your needs. To contact Surrey Police, call on 101.
