Welcome to Look Local in September! I do hope you all enjoyed a lovely summer. We are back and feeling refreshed after our little summer break, and while it’s great to have some time out, it’s great to be back as well! September is always a busy busy time: new schools, new adventures, as some of our big children fly the nest and head for university or college or even new jobs. Look Local would like to wish lots of luck to everyone starting a new chapter, and that extends to mums and dads too. Maybe this is a time for a new adventure for you too ! Our pages this month take you back in time, but not too far, to Village Day …. see our lovely photographs! I hope they bring back happy memories, it was a truly wonderful day. We also include information about some fascinating and free talks taking place at Fine Fettle in the village, and in addition to this, I am delighted to tell you all about my recent visit to Eaton Acupuncture. Well worth checking out this fantastic local business. On a sad note, we were very sorry to hear that two local heroes left us in the summer … Mr Jim Smith and Mr Martin Warwick both passed away within a few days of each other. Both served our village and the local community so well for many years, Jim as a local councillor and Martin as the editor of the Bookhams Bulletin for many years. Both were involved in many aspects of local life and will be missed by very many. See tributes to both within. Wishing you all a great month. Until next time, take care,

Ros

ASK BRUCE:

OLD DOGS & NEW TRICKS

This month, reader Joanna asks can you teach an old dog new tricks? She’s recently re-homed a five-yearold rescue dog (a springer spaniel collie cross) who has settled in well. However, her dog has some bad habits – like chasing joggers and barking at horses – which are proving hard to break. In short, yes it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks, although it’s not as simple or quick as with a puppy who is young and forming new behaviours. With an older dog, you are working in reverse i.e. teaching them to unlearn old behaviours and replace these with new. With changes in certain behaviours, particularly for older dogs, there are two sides. Much like teaching a child, you should clearly show your dog when behaviour is not wanted (for example, a stern no, or training aids such as discs), AND reward behaviour that is wanted (for example, praise and a treat). This combined approach is very powerful for a dog and really works. The annoying habits of Joanna’s rescue dog are quite common in collies or collie crosses. They are superintelligent and need mental stimulation (like doggy day care). They also have a natural instinct to herd which often takes the shape of chasing. However, if you give them a positive outlet for this instinct, such as exercise, agility or chasing a ball, they are very smart and will learn quickly. There’s definitely hope! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Bookham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce about? Send your questions to :-

TALKS

Finefettle Talks is a free event where members of the team do short talks on popular subject areas...

A

bout three months ago, the team at Fine Fettle decided they would like to get more information about what they did and about related health subject areas to the local community. From that thought, Fine Fettle Talks was born. Fine Fettle Talks is a free event where members of the Fine Fettle team give short talks on popular subject areas. All that we ask is you book your place, as we have limited space available. We have now had two successful free evening events on a range of subjects including: What is pain? What is proprioception and why is it important to you?

Creating happiness by changing your thinking. Are you sitting comfortably at work – ergonomics for home ? I was one of the speakers at our last event on 22nd June and my talk was all about ergonomics, both in the home and in the office. It was lovely to chat to the people that attended and we all enjoyed playing with the ergonomic equipment that I had brought with me. My talk included the use of mobile phones, tablets and other similar devices that cause many of us to bend our head forward for long periods of time causing strain or “text neck” as I have heard it called. We all agreed we were guilty of this! My colleague Sue Ford, Clinical Hypnotherapist, spoke about

creating happiness by changing your thinking and oh my goodness, she gave us a lot to think about in her slot...how we have more choice in how we feel than we think we have; how thinking positively does not solve our problems, but does help us look at them in a more balanced way. It was an informative but informal event, with plenty of coffee, smiles and even some yummy biscuits! Our next event is on Wednesday 28th September 7pm-8pm and we have as usual two speakers, Pippin our physiotherapist and Alistair our homeopath. Pippin will be talking about managing arthritis and Alistair will be taking about homeopathy for when you twist and shout!

To book your place, please contact Fine Fettle reception on 01372 458984

That’s a good

I

POINT!

t was a real treat and a total pleasure to visit Emma Eaton recently at her Bookham-based clinic. I have known Emma for about 4 years, initially from her time in Cobham, when I reviewed her wonderful reflexology treatments for Look Local Cobham. Emma and her family moved to Bookham nearly a year ago and I was delighted to find out that she has now also moved her clinic to Bookham, specialising in acupuncture and reflexology. I was keen to learn more about the acupuncture on this visit. As I expected ’The Clinic’ is delightful. Seen here, it is beautifully designed in a stylish but minimalist way... the feng shui is perfect! Instant relaxation, even before Emma works her magic! Let me start by telling you a little bit about Emma’s background. Following a long corporate career, she began retraining as a healthcare practitioner in 2009, initially focusing on reflexology and then acupuncture, graduating from the International College of Oriental Medicine (ICOM) with a B.Sc (hons).

18 Looklocal Magazine - September 2016

Her style integrates Classical Chinese Medicine, contemporary acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Five Elements and Stems and Branches. Emma was honoured to be part of the reflexology team at The Fountain Centre, based at the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford, supporting patients and carers through cancer. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and Association of Reflexologists (AoR). As I expected, Emma is highly trained and her professional and friendly approach offers a winning combination. If I am totally honest, although I had heard great things about acupuncture, it isn’t really a treatment I would normally look forward to (because I thought it might hurt!) but as I mention above, as soon as I walked into Emma’s clinic, I honestly knew that I was in safe hands. Many of the patients who visit her regularly and benefit from her treatments are in fact needle-phobic. At the first treatment, most patients soon realize that

For further information, call Emma for a chat on 07821 590287 or email emma@eatonacupuncture.co.uk www.eatonacupuncture.co.uk

the hair-thin sterile disposable needles which are used are specifically designed to be as painless as possible. They are about a tenth of the thickness of a medical syringe. In many treatments, patients are not even aware whether the needles have been inserted or not. ‘Most of my needle-phobic patients tell me that they are so pleased they tried it, as it has provided such relief, especially in the case of chronic daily health issues.’ Acupuncture is used to help with most complaints about which you would go to your doctor, and many GPs recommend it to their patients. In the week I visited, Emma had seen patients presenting with a wide range of health challenges: benefit from acupuncture: those with back pain, general aches and pains, infertility, fatigue, PCOS, shoulder pain, insomnia, anxiety, hot flushes, foot pain and digestive problems. The focus of treatment is on you as an individual. It aims to treat your immediate health problems and the underlying root cause. There is a whole body of

research to support that acupuncture works. It is widely respected as a method of treating people and is used frequently in the UK. It is currently estimated that 2.3 million people are being treated each year by British Acupuncture Council members, and as I found out, there really is nothing to be afraid of. I actually enjoyed the treatment and I must say I felt great afterwards too. I will certainly visit Emma again when the need arises. Acupuncture is natural, holistic and works with the body. The aim of acupuncture is to prompt the body to do what it knows how to do. Whilst patients may come for a specific reason, such as neck pain, they soon experience other additional positive side effects: for example, they find that their general mood, sleep and digestion are improved too. Thank you so much, Emma, I really enjoyed my appointment with you, and I wish you every success in Bookham. I’m sure the word will soon spread that you are here! Look Local highly recommends Eaton Acupuncture. Form an orderly queue!

hoping FOR THE BEST Debut author Sarah Berryman reveals what parenting identical twins plus one is really like in this honest and humorous diary of family life. Surrey author Sarah Berryman’s debut parenting book, Hoping for the Best: Three Months in the Life of a Twin Plus One Mummy, offers a unique day-today glimpse into the challenges and craziness thrown at a mum of three young boys. Sarah offers us a rare insight into her everyday life with identical twins, and the dynamics between them, their younger feistier sibling and the rest of the family. Sarah has “real children”. They did not sleep through from day one. They did not master baby-led weaning. They have all had norovirus and chicken pox, and two of the three have had nits. They have bitten and been bitten. One has a hearing aid, one wears splints at night to stop him walking on tip toes and one has a speech delay. They play a little, bicker a lot and are friends and enemies in equal measures. “It became apparent over time that what I saw as normality in our house, others found amusing and, in some cases, our stories made them feel better about their home life!” comments Sarah, who feels that Hoping for the Best will entertain a broad range of mothers. “In case my child-driven chocolate and wine consumption numbed my memories of the early years, I started keeping a diary of our day-to-day life. On recounting some of those

moments of craziness to the other schoolrun mums, the idea of this book was born. It wasn’t long before other mums suggested that this would be just the kind of book they would love to read not a parenting manual, not a book about becoming a new mum, but the true reality of life as a mum with identical twins plus one.” Sarah adds, “What I scribbled on a post-it note 25 years ago - hoping for the best, prepared for the worst and unsurprised by anything in between – a quote from the American author Maya Angelou, became my mantra for life and has always helped me see the funny side of being a mum to three boys. As Maya’s wisdom and humour echo through our daily life, so it seems fitting that they should form the foundation of this book.” PUBLICATION DATE: 28th November ISBN: 9781785899485 Price: £11.99

Cabbage Palms and Cruise Ships: A garden student’s year on the Isles of Scilly, by Karen Bridgeman (Historic Planting Advisor)

RAISES £600 Seventy people attended an evening of wine tasting, raising £600 for The Meeting Place on Saturday 25th June.

The tasting, which took place at Bookham Baptist Church, took the form of a quiz where guests were invited to try to match the description of the wine to a country of origin as well as guessing an approximate price! A great time was had by all! Our next fundraising event will be our Annual Quiz Night on Saturday 19th November. Tickets from Bookham Baptist Church from 1st October! The Meeting Place is a charitable organization which pioneers and manages a number of ‘hubs’ which benefit the community in the Bookham area. The Community Hub and Cafe: Mondays,

Fridays and Saturdays 10-12 at Bookham Baptist Church – for speciality coffees and cakes, providing space for people to meet others and access support and information in a relaxed atmosphere. The Hub also provides the opportunity to buy children’s clothing and toys, and serves as an access point for information about partner organisations and the support they offer locally. We can also help access a piece of equipment or a particular service in times of crisis from the Help Hub. The Language Hub - provides language skills and practice opportunities for those who speak English as a second language.

ransomware

AND THE

SOLUTION

This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. Ransomware or Cryptolocker Ransomware has been in the limelight for a couple of years now, and it is usually activated by opening an attachment in an email. Once it is activated, all the data files on your PC, back-up drives and connected devices become encrypted either immediately or at some designated time in the future. The user then receives a message stating your data has become encrypted and to call a phone number within x number days to have your data unencrypted, otherwise it will be lost forever. There have been some high-profile cases recently. In January, Lincolnshire Country Council was hit by a ransomware attack; the demand was for one million pounds, and it closed the council for several days. Currently, there are only two ways to get your data back from this attack: 1: To recover your data from an unaffected backup 2: Pay the ransom Just remember: your data is probably more valuable to you than the equipment, and with our Total Care Support Plan, we back up your data to our cloud. We have had some customers who have been subjected to ransomware attacks and we have recovered all their data. In all cases, Action Fraud has been informed. Should you like further information on these issues, or to discuss your own security, please do not hesitate to contact us or Action Fraud. Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk

bmw 7 series CAR REVIEW Ted Macauley test drives the new BMW Series 7 luxor-limo and lets us know what it has to offer...

I

n buying a new car, comparisons are inevitable, unless your loyalty to a specific manufacturer rules out any freshly invasive notions on what brand of motor you fancy. And here, with no favouritism or otherwise to either side and only balanced judgement as my guide, I would edge the Mercedes S-type ahead of the new fifth generation BMW 7 Series in the luxury car class. But that’s personal preference and the volume of contra-feeling was impressively laid on me at, above all places, Trophy Wife’s boutique in Cobham. She was staging a fashion show and I had parked outside the front door an updated, uprated brand new BMW 7 luxor-limo. A gleamer of a Beamer to notice. I was staggered by the number of hubbies funding their wives’ dresses fancies who were impressed by my transport and wanted to know more about it. I had to confess, indeed enthuse, that after a week of varied motoring up and down and all around

the wet UK, motorways and country lanes alike, the flagship newcomer left me with a feeling that here was real value for money. Okay, it does not revel in quite the same style as the more pricey Mercedes, but as a really big and bold and spacious alternative, whether for you or your leggy chauffeur to drive in roomy comfort, it ticks a good few boxes. Its eight-speed automatic transmission smoothly sorts out the best of the V8’S turbo thrust and its considerable muscle in a polished manner without any eyewidening jerkiness. This heavier version with all-wheel drive and long wheel base weighs in at a whopping 47000lbs and is still, I found, among the besthandling fullest-sized luxury cars, thanks to variable ride-settings. And it has a Stop-Go trick facility that automatically brings the car to a halt if you or your chauffeur’s attention has wandered and fails to react to a stopped traffic queue in time. That is only one of the very many sophisticated add-ons, such as a camera

36 Looklocal Magazine - September 2016

that looks at your hand movements near the screen to set up remotely the infotainment functions to ensure comfort, convenience and safety. Another one I liked, even if it is a little bizarre, was a coffee cup display that popped up on the touch pad if an unsafe level of fatigue was detected in the driver. If you like music on the move, there’s a Bang & Olufsen 16-speaker surround sound - and double display for the passengers in the sprawly back seats, bench or single, as you prefer. Forget the old misgivings about noisy and reluctant diesels, the gutsy BMW’s offering in the 730d is a polished performer, offering high economy and low emissions. It may not have the kerbside ahem of the Mercedes S, but overall, this vastly technologically-advanced battler on the luxury car front is a winner in its own right. A true Beamer.... Specification: My Choice 730d. BHP 265.0-60mph 6.1s. Top speed 155mph. Price £64,530.

gardening

MATTERS

Apart from visual impact, the one thing that comes to mind when thinking of gardens is scent...

I

t’s an ingredient that no garden should be without, and it’s not hard to turn your garden into a scented heaven. We’re all familiar with the old faves, such as roses and lilies – although the old-fashioned scented roses of my childhood seem to be ever more difficult to find – but there are loads of other scented plants from which to choose, and you can have a perfumed garden throughout the year, even in the winter. There are various plants which are highly scented, and it’s good to include at least one in each season: hyacinths, lilac and certain species of daffodil in spring; honeysuckle, lavender, sweet peas and philadelphus in summer; jasmine, evening primrose and curry plant in autumn; daphne, witch hazel and mahonia in winter. Scented plants need careful positioning if you are to benefit fully from them. With some, you need to shove your nose right into them to smell the

scent, so put these within easy reach on the patio or by a path: if you have to perform a complicated gymnastic routine in order to smell them, the attraction is somewhat diminished. Some plants, such as evening primrose, release their fragrance as the sun sets, and these are perfect for putting near a bench or other seating areas. Some release their scent when brushed against, eg lavender and herbs, and so they are great for placing alongside a path where people pass the whole time. Really strong scents are probably better placed at the back of your garden so that they don’t completely dominate. There’s also scented bedding, including nemesia and petunias, which is ideal for baskets and tubs. Walls and fences are perfect places for climbers with a fragrance. These include honeysuckle, early clematis, wisteria, jasmine and scented climbing roses. Not only will they smell gorgeous, but they all have beautiful colourful flowers for maximum

sensory impact. And bonus, they work extremely effectively in small gardens too, as they take up very little room on the ground. Mixing and matching works well too. You can intertwine a scented plant amongst a non-scented one, such as a clematis amongst a non-scented rose or vice versa, and bulbs in the spring amongst scented wallflowers. This will produce a really lovely display of colour which doesn’t clash, scent-wise. Or place a strongly-fragranced plant amongst a more subtly-scented one: for example, a philadelphus with a gentlyscented climbing rose. Try not to have too many clashing smells though, as it kind of defeats the object if you can’t distinguish any one single fragrance. And on a wet day, that fragrance will linger…which is just as well, bearing in mind we seem to major on wet days here in Blighty. Careful planning can provide you with a permanently fragrant garden. What could be nicer?

Rock ‘n’ Pop While most of us have tended to take rock n’ pop for granted through many decades, I thought this week that it might be worth saluting some of the groundbreaking important evens that shaped not only rock ‘n’ roll, but also our lives….. 1. Amplification was essential in the early days of rock, and a pioneering example was the distortion created by the Kinks’ Dave Davies on You Really Got Me when he took a knife to his amp. Amplifiers also allowed a small number of musicians to entertain many thousands at outdoor events. 2. In 1961, the Shirrelles became the first all-girl group to have a number one with the Carole King classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. 3. Bob Dylan’s historic appearance at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall in 1966 created a huge amount of controversy when he abandoned folk music for rock by plugging in and playing Like A Rolling Stone. The fall-out was incredible. When fans started booing, Dylan simply turned it up. 4. Elivis Presley’s appearance on America’s favourite variety programme, The Ed Sullivan Show, in 1956. To avoid censorship issues, the King was only shown from the waist up and 60 million viewers fell in love with Presley’s rock ‘n’roll fusion of blues and country 5. In 1964, The Beatles found themselves on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a few weeks later, they occupied the top five chart positions in the US... and Beatlemania was born. The fabled four with their eye-catching long hair were unique in that they wrote, sang and played their own material. 6. In 1975, Bob Marley released No Woman, No Cry, his first major hit and one which made him an international star and ambassador for the oppressed. 7. In 1981, MTV was launched and showcased videos, making them as important as the pop single. Now a global brand, it all began with the Buggles video for Video Killed the Radio Star. 8. It was in 1982 that 25 year old Michael Jackson was widely acknowledged as the greatest song and dance man in the world with the release of the biggest selling album of all time, Thriller. Well, there are a few highlights from me but I’m guessing that you’ll have your own special memories to celebrate the vital moments in rock ‘n’ soul !

e all need a simple summer recipe that copes with our changeable weather and this does the trick. A lovely slow roast (perfect for the slow cooker) full of warm summer flavours that copes beautifully with a chilly evening or rainy day!

1.5kg lamb neck fillet, trimmed of sinew and cut into 7.5cm lengths Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, peeled and quartered 4 large carrots, chopped into 1” pieces 8 cloves of garlic, smashed 290g jar pitted Kalamata olives 250ml chicken broth 5 fresh tomatoes, roughly chopped 140g (approximately 10) sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained and sliced

METHOD:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4. 2. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. 3. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Brown the lamb fillets on all sides, then place in a large casserole dish. 4. Add all the remaining ingredients. Cover with tin foil and place in the oven. 5. Roast for 30 minutes, then reduce the heat to 150°C/ Gas Mark 2 and cook for a further 2 hours or until the meat is very tender and falling apart. LOOKING FOR

DOG

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age, & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

Would you like a little extra income? Medau Movement is a tried and tested form of exercise that has been practised safely in the UK for over 60 years. Based on natural body movements, you will neither strain your muscles, nor become exhausted. The lessons will strengthen your core, exercise all major muscle groups and give you a safe cardiovascular workout. They will also help to improve your co-ordination and balance. Our teachers are trained to teach each class and each participant within it; there are no set routines to learn and no competition. Each lesson is tailored to YOUR needs and those of your fellow class members. Our classes include a variety of rhythms to influence the dynamics of movement during each session. They are suitable for all age groups and all abilities AND ARE FUN!!

Volunteer Bookham 2016

Supporting people facing life-threatening illness The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help at home. Practical issues like driving, shopping and getting to hospital for treatment can sometimes be hard to manage, and our volunteers can make a real difference. Weekly visits help build up a relationship with patient and carer, offering respite, company and time to listen to the feelings and concerns serious illness brings. Volunteers, who should be drivers, are invited to join our friendly and supportive team.

Our next volunteer taster sessions run this Autumn. Call Sharon today on 01306 881816 and view our new volunteer videos at wwww.brigittetrust.org

DONKEY DERBY returns to Polesden Lacey for a family fun day of entertainment on Sunday 4th September 2016

A

fter two years with successful day events, the Leatherhead Lions Club are returning to Polesden Lacey with their popular Donkey Derby. The Leatherhead Lions Club, in conjunction with the National Trust, is organising a fun-filled day of entertainment for all the family on Sunday 4th September. Jim Malynn, Lions’ President says “ I am delighted that the National Trust has invited us back for a third year and granted free entry to all visitors as part of their community-awareness programme. It was to our positive delight that over 6000 visitors came last year and we hope this figure will be repeated.”

There will be a warm welcome for the donkeys from Hunts of Worplesdon and we shall have seven races which can be sponsored or backed to win on the Tote. Children’s Punch & Judy, sideshows, a bouncy castle plus craft stalls, a large food court and beer tent for the adults will provide other attractions to one and all. Last year, many local charities benefited from the takings on the day, and it is always the Lions belief that money raised locally should be spent locally, so what better way than having a happy day at a beautiful National Trust property. Make a note of the date, SUNDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER.

For more information or to book a sales pitch, please go to www.leatherheadlions.org.uk or contact Lion Mike on 07833

farewell to 2 localHEROS... Jim Smith

Martin Warwick

A former Bookham councillor described by friends and family as a “big man with a big heart” has died. James Emerton Smith OBE, a former Mole Valley councillor for Bookham North and a Surrey County councillor for Bookham and Fetcham West between 1997-2009, died aged 79 on June 28 following a short illness. Mr Smith was a loving husband of more than 50 years to Angela, father to Alexandra, Victoria, William and Edward and a grandfather of six. His eldest daughter Alexandra Fox said: “James had many happy memories, but there were a couple that stand out. “One was when he was awarded the OBE at Buckingham Palace by the Queen in 1989. The other was when he was invited to chair the Surrey Police Authority; because of his father [who was a policeman], the police always meant a great deal to him. “But the biggest joy for him was his family. For him, there was no better way to spend the day than being surrounded by his family; he would sit there with an enormous smile on his face, just watching everyone talking and playing. “He was a ‘big’ man with a ‘big’ heart who has left a gap in our family and will be missed dreadfully. We are all so proud of him and everything he has achieved throughout his life.” Jim was frequently seen in and around the village and he was involved in so many local projects over the years. He will be greatly missed by many. Mr Smith’s funeral took place at St Nicholas Church, Bookham on July 19.

Martin, best known locally as Editor of the Bookhams Bulletin, died on 30th June aged 82. Born in London, Martin was a maths scholar at London University before becoming a maths teacher. With his mathematical mind, he decided on a move into the computer industry in 1963, joining English Electric. There, he worked on one of the earliest digital computers, creating operating systems that would enable software programmes to be written. He was very involved in the development of the industry, moving into management before becoming a consultant in the rapidly changing world of digital technology. When he retired, he and his wife Jill decided to move from London to peaceful Surrey, deciding on Bookham and moving here in 2001. Wanting to become involved in the local community, Martin volunteered as a steward at Polesden Lacey, playing the grand piano for visitors and editing the internal magazines. He had a great interest in local history and joined the local history society and also the Bookham Community Association. In 2002, Martin took over as editor of the Bookhams Bulletin and gradually transformed it into the magazine we are used to seeing today. He became a well-known figure at very many village events, with his camera at the ready and an article forming in his mind. He encouraged local organisations to tell everyone what they were doing through the Bulletin. His gentle and quiet manner belied an incisive mind and always with humour bubbling very close to the surface. He will be sorely missed not only by his family but by the numerous organisations which he has helped over the last 15 years.
