Bring on the Spring I say! It must be nearly time for the flowers to show their faces again. I actually planted some tulip bulbs last year so I can’t wait to see them. That is if I planted the bulbs the right way up of course! Not a natural horticulturist as you may have gathered! We have some great features for you to enjoy this month and news of a new local bus service, which is due to be launched on 7th April . This will be the first direct bus to run between Cobham and Weybridge with extended routes at weekends: a bus service run for the community, by the community. Such a great idea! Watch out for the bright blue ‘Chatterbus’ which will soon be passing your way. More info inside. Also new this month, a contribution from our local MP, Mr Dominic Raab. If you use the local train services, you will be interested to hear his thoughts I’m sure. And finally, did you know there is a fantastic local charity who ‘up cycle’ unwanted and used furniture? See our feature about the Woking Community Furniture Project. What a great idea this is! Finally, do remember it’s Mothers Day on 15th March! Go on, spoil your Mum; I’m sure she deserves a treat. A

brand new bus service will be launched in Cobham on April 7th. The Chatterbus will be the first direct bus between Cobham and Weybridge and the Brooklands Retail Park. It will also be the first commuter service right to Cobham station door, as well as connecting the town with Downside and Oxshott, and with Fetcham and Leatherhead on Saturdays. The Chatterbus route has been carefully planned to

provide maximum benefit to local residents. It will give access to Brooklands Retail Park, and to shops and important community services, such as the Jobcentre, in Weybridge. It will make Cobham and Stoke D’Abernon station more accessible to Cobham residents for rushhour and daytime services, and bring Stoke d’Abernon and Oxshott residents into Cobham where they can use the new library and community hub, the Village Hall, shops, cafes and banks.

Local school children will also be able to use the bus to and from school - St Andrew’s and St. Matthew’s are directly on the route and Cobham Free School is a short walk away. An extended service on Saturdays will also take in Leatherhead Leisure Centre and Fetcham as well as Brooklands Museum and Mercedes Benz World. The new service, which will appear as routes C1 and C2 on SCC timetables, will go down Station Road stopping opposite the station. It is hoped that the 408 and 513 buses will do likewise which will mean that there will be three bus services providing 25 journeys to & from the station each day. Chatterbus is a completely local initiative, managed by a new Community Interest Company - Cobham Community Bus CIC - purely for the benefit of the local community. This unique approach to providing a bus service is generously sponsored by Elmbridge

Borough Council, Surrey County Council , Chelsea Football Club Foundation, Anchor, and Cargill. Chatterbus is well down the road to launch day. A detailed timetable has been worked up, tested and reworked with the support of Surrey County Council Public Transport team. The Chatterbus service will be provided by a professional public transport provider. The focus will be on customer service and reliability. n tough financial times, people want to know they’re getting a fair deal. I have been pursuing this for local residents in two ways over the last month or so. First, as a commuting MP living in Thames Ditton, I know the frustration residents feel about overcrowding on South West Trains, as we pay everrising fares. I get on at Esher. I see how crammed the carriages in the morning are. The WokingWaterloo service crams in the largest number of passengers in excess of capacity of any train service in the entire country - a 73% breach of its ceiling. Fares are already some of the most expensive in Europe. But what is particularly hard to justify is the enormous subsidy that Surrey commuters pay – through fares, on top of taxation - for lines across the country. Over the past four years, South West Trains’ passengers coughed up £1 billion to the Government, the largest subsidy to Government coffers of any train operating company. Last month, I secured a debate in Parliament to press the government on three actions. First, the expansion of capacity at Waterloo into the former Eurostar platforms, to allow an increase in carriages to ease overcrowding. Over the longer term, a second

Crossrail line linking south-west London, Surrey and Hertfordshire would alleviate pressure on existing services. Finally, we need proper transparency around the subsidy South West Trains pay the government – and a clearer justification for its scale. Sticking with the unfair allocation of revenue, I also led a cross-party debate on the future of the United Kingdom. I am pleased the Scots voted to stay in the UK, and I am relaxed about further devolution of powers. But, any new deal for Britain must be fair for the whole of Britain. That means bridging the democratic deficit that allows Scottish MPs to vote on English matters, like social care or school reforms, which are now devolved to the Scottish Executive. It also means overhauling the Barnett Formula, used by the UK government to subsidise the devolved administrations. Scottish public services already receive £2,500 more investment per person, each year, than in Elmbridge. If Scots want greater powers to tax and spend, why should the rest of the Union keep subsidising them to the hilt? Given the financial pressures the country still faces, it’s crucial investment is allocated in a transparent and reasonable way. Rest assured, whatever we’re debating, I will keep making the case for a fairer deal for Elmbridge.

e’re into the gardening season, so it might be prudent to flag up something which isn’t always very well known by gardeners, namely which plants are poisonous. Several garden plants are deadly, and one of these is aconite.

Aconitum napellus, also known as aconite, monkshood or wolfsbane, is a poisonous wild plant with dark purple flowers. It’s very common in the UK, growing in gardens around the country. Symptoms of aconite poisoning appear quickly and include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, hypotension, chest pain, palpitations and numbness of the face. In severe cases, the numbness can spread to the limbs, and muscles can weaken. It can also cause abnormal, rapid heart rhythms and can stop the heart from beating. Recently, the coroner dealt with the case of Nathan Greenway, a gardener at an estate in Alton, Hampshire, whose legal team believe he’d touched wolfsbane. He collapsed and died from multi-organ failure five days after being admitted to hospital. Doctors were baffled by the cause of death, and it was only after Nathan’s father began his own investigation that a link with wolfsbane was made. In Greek mythology, Medea poisoned a cup of wine with wolfsbane in an attempt to kill her lover, Theseus. It’s also the method that Leopold Bloom’s father, Rudolph, used to kill himself in James Joyce’s Ulysses, and it’s featured in the TV series Midsomer Murders. Despite growing wild in Britain, the plant is rarely identified as a cause of death. Tom Wells from the Chelsea Physic Garden considers wolfsbane to be one of the most dangerous plants found in British gardens: the highest level of poison is in the

roots, although it’s still found in the flower, and if there were cuts on Nathan’s hand, it would have entered his bloodstream and affected his heart very quickly. The poison leaves the body within a day, so it’s paramount that blood samples are kept. Other poisonous plants found in gardens include: Atropa belladonna, or deadly nightshade. Its berries contain alkaloids - a couple will cause hallucinations, but eight will be fatal. Digitalis, or foxglove. The roots, sap, flowers, seeds, pollen and leaves of foxglove are all poisonous, even when dried, so beware a plant pod exploding and emitting spores/pollen: inhaling them can cause trouble too. Conium maculatum, or hemlock. Contains poison that works on the central nervous system, and ingestion can result in collapse or death. Brugmansia, or angel’s trumpet. The entire plant’s poisonous, with the main toxin scopolamine causing nausea, dizziness and death. Laburnum, or golden chain. All parts are poisonous, and can be lethal if consumed in excess. Agrostemma githago, the corncockle. Thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in July. Can cause death by touching. NB the seed is on sale at Crocus! So please, stay safe. Wear gloves at all times when gardening, and wash your hands ASAP after coming in. We really don’t want a reduced readership….

Trust the French. Oh-La-La.Only they could be daring enough to shape a car featuring a sexy doublebump derriere-like roof. It is the RCZ-R, a curvy eyecatcher, the first model from Peugeot’s Paris-based motorsport HQ, makers of their Le Mans race challengers, and a surefire winner for those amongst us looking for an example of offbeat pleasure. In practical terms the new RCZ-R is the most mighty French car on the planet with a wow of a maximised 1.6-litre engine, a turbo four-cylinder, that roars out 266 bhp and guaranteed to thrill. My test car was pristine white, a glowing reminder to drivers ahead of me and looking into their rearview mirrors, that I was on my way with a tingly growl from the exhaust pipes for them to hear when I’d gone past. This RCZ range-topper,the R, a really impressive face-lifted improvement on the original and a surefire success,combines style with uniqueness and a really welcome

economy of running costs. Peugeot may have been at a standstill for too many years, content to flood the market place with standard and, let’s be honest, boring transport - but not any more judging by the RCZ-R. The “R” could stand for many descriptions...rapid, racy and reeking with refinement.I would settle for refreshing. My week in its company was a joy. Whether I was cavorting around Lake District lanes or on the motorways, both crowded and emptyish, to get me up there, it was good behaviour personified, with obedient responses to whatever I asked of its front drive, both in the teeming wet and the dry. And the sumptuous plush bucket seats, surely the best in the sports

car business,were havens of comfort and security on my 400 miles or so round trip. But it is important to remind oneself that this is strictly a twoseater despite a pair of the tiniest rear seats which are hopelessly hardly worth the description and which are useful only for a wee bit of extra luggage storage space certainly not to accommodate even one mini-sized adult, never mind two. Sadly, the B-Side has now gone the way of so much to do with the Vinyl age. The idea of holding a single or album & studying the cover art or perhaps exploring the lyrics while listening to a record all belong to an era when pop music was the epicentre of youth culture. Sometimes artists would record a couple of minutes of nonsense on the flip side of a highly anticipated A side like Tracey Ullman’s hit ‘They Don’t Know’ was backed by a song entitled ‘The B-Side’ and featured Tracey in a variety of comical monologues, many of which bemoaned the perceived uselessness of B-Sides. Sometimes a bit more respect was exercised and care was taken to record something special. The purchaser would then get a bit more value for their money, getting two songs for the price of one. Notable B-Sides include one of the greatest songs ever, The Beach Boys ‘God Only Knows’ which was the flip of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’; and The Rolling Stones epic ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ was relegated to B-Side status with the A-Side being ‘Honky Tonk Women’. On a few occasions, the B-Side turned out to be the more popular song. Often it was because a radio DJ preferred the B-Side to its A-Side and played it instead. Forced through her mistress’s shenanigans to decamp for the continent, Biddy and her fellow servants Loveday, a slave forced to work as a footman, and the sinister Ozias Pars, must use all their wits to prevent themselves becoming embroiled in a murderous conspiracy. What sets this book apart is the emphasis on food. Each chapter starts with an authentic eighteenth century recipe which is fascinating (and often disgusting). A really captivating debut. Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healy, (paperback £7.99) Elizabeth is Missing is narrated by Maud who escapes from her carers and daughter Helen to buy peach slices, and lots of them. She is suffering from dementia and discovers an old compact mirror from 70 years ago at the bottom of her friend’s garden. This is the beginning of the two mysteries in this story; the disappearance of Elizabeth and the mystery of what happened to her older sister Sukie, who went missing in postwar London. This book very cleverly combines crime and fiction and is very quirky with an understated sense of humour. A jolly good read! The Bees by Laline Paull, (paperback £8.99) A first novel by playwright Laline Paull, this book is delightful and intriguing. The reader is drawn into the world of Flora 717, a sanitation worker in the complex and highly regulated world of the beehive. The story of her rebellion and mission to save her hive from dangers, both external and internal, is wonderful.

A second year in the life of Transition We celebrated our second birthday on the 23rd of January 2015 and what a year it’s been! We launched our website in 2014 and held events such as the Entertainment Swap and Apple Day. At the swap in April, participants swapped their books, CDs, DVDs and making Cobham, healthier, happier and more resilient toys for something new, and on Apple Day we pressed 19 litres of juice. The groups are doing incredibly well with the Cobham Chatterbus launching on 7th of April, taking in Brooklands, Weybridge and Cobham & Stoke D’Abernon Station along the way. See www.chatterbus.org.uk for more details. The community garden group launched a crowdfunding campaign in December and managed to raise £2711 in 28 days from 41 backers. The money will go towards the fence. The waste group handed out reusable bags in January and will launch an exciting competition soon. In 2015 we’re looking forward to digging into the Cobham community garden, seeing the Cobham Chatterbus up and running, and going on our inaugural Transition Cobham walk with the footpaths group.
