SEPTEMBER ISSUE
I hope you all enjoyed a great summer. We had a lovely break here at the Look Local office and we are all feeling refreshed and raring to go again! It’s the time of year for new school shoes and pencil cases, for some to start school and for some to leave, for many older students to fly the nest and head to pastures new, a time of many changes... Another great event is coming up this month in the form of Cobham Heritage Day! See our centre page pull out for full details; this is a really great day out I hope to see you there! Our award winning Riverhill Regeneration project was honoured by an official Royal opening back in July. It was a truly lovely afternoon we are delighted to share the occasion with you here. I really enjoyed chatting to a very nice gentleman with a very well known voice during the summer. David ‘Kid’ Jensen lives locally and we met for a coffee and chatted about his action packed career, I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoyed hearing all about it! David has kindly agreed to write a regular music column for Look Local. I am really looking forward to that starting in our next issue.

Royal Honour for Cobham Members of the community in Cobham enjoyed a wonderful afternoon recently when HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO visited The Riverhill Regeneration Project. The Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust together with local schools, clubs, volunteers, businesses and Elmbridge Borough Council raised £150,000 to complete this award-winning regeneration project. Her Royal Highness met those involved in the project, as well as members of the Trust and viewed the work which had been carried out. To cheers from the crowds, Her Royal Highness unveiled a new information board dedicating the project to the Diamond
Jubilee 1952-2012. Sam Perkins (age 8) presented The Countess of Wessex with a commemorative book about the project. One of the many highlights of the afternoon was a mini duck race on the River Mole. 20 plastic ducks, each one named after a member of the Royal family, were designed by Children from the three local schools who have been involved with the project (Royal Kent School, St. Andrew’s School and St. Matthew’s School). Watched by the crowd, the little ducks raced down the River Mole to the finishing line by the new viewing platform. The winning duck, named after Prince Andrew was presented to Her Royal Highness by Emily Banfield (age 6) as
a wonderful reminder of the afternoon. The duck race represented a miniature version of Cobham’s annual Heritage Day event (to be held on the 13th September this year) when 8,000 plastic ducks race down the Mole. Her Royal Highness then enjoyed a demonstration by the Cobham Millers when she toured Cobham Mill, Surrey’s sole surviving Water Mill. Escorted by Sir Gerald Acher, Chairman of the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust, The Countess of Wessex then moved to The Tilt where a tea party provided by Waitrose in Cobham was in full swing. Children from St Matthew’s School performed a Maypole dancing demonstration and the Cobham Band provided uplifting music for the afternoon. Her Royal Highness enjoyed a cup of tea whilst meeting members of
the Avenue of Remembrance dedicated to remembering those who lost their lives in the Second World War. After a short speech of thanks by Sir Gerald Acher, Sophie Perkins (age 5) presented Her Royal Highness with a posy of flowers before she departed. Sir Gerald Acher, Chairman of the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust said, “This was an outstanding afternoon for Cobham, made perfect by the gracious presence of HRH The Countess of Wessex. The Riverhill project has helped bring our community together in celebration of our rich heritage and The Countess clearly enjoyed the happy village atmosphere as she chatted to many who had come out to welcome her.” Councillor Mary Sheldon, Portfolio Holder of Leisure and Culture at Elmbridge
the Cobham Evening WI who had kindly made the cakes for the party. She also met members of the Royal British Legion and some of the many volunteers who support the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust throughout the year. To the delight of the crowds Her Royal Highness swapped places with Glenn Hayter, the Cobham Band’s Conductor and briefly took over the baton to conduct the Band. Under blue skies, Her Royal Highness spent time reading a memorial stone at
Borough Council, said, “The Riverhill refurbishment project completed by the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council and with support from the local community, Surrey County Council and businesses is a resounding success. It is a shining example of how a strong commitment by the community can revitalise our neighbourhoods. The Council is delighted to have been involved in this exciting project to make sure that this picturesque part of Cobham can be fully enjoyed by residents and visitors alike”.

Mr DJ...
I recently enjoyed chatting to a charming man who has a very well known and distinctive voice! A voice which in fact, I am sure many of you would recognise in an instant and one which could so often be heard in my car, my kitchen and at my friends houses in my formative years.
The owner of this famous voice was none other than Mr David Jenson. Formally known as the DJ David Kid Jensen, David and his family have lived happily in Esher for 37 years and as we ordered our coffee we started exchanging thoughts on the lovely local restaurants and also some of our favourite dog walking spots! It turns out that actually, we both enjoyed talking about our dogs quite a lot! However I felt there were probably other subjects we should cover for the purpose of our feature! So we moved the conversation along & started to chat about David’s amazing career and some of the fascinating people he’s met along the way... That voice/accent I mentioned earlier originates from Vancouver, where David grew up. At school he enjoyed public speaking, and probably started honing his announcing skills even then as president of the Student Council. He also played the trumpet and a little piano but although he loved music and knew he wanted to be involved, becoming a musician wasn’t his calling. When an opportunity to present and make announcements on a classical radio station came up, he jumped at the chance! The show was sponsored by a local funeral director, and announcements took the form of funeral details and arrangements with regard to flowers or donations! The show was
rather strangely named ‘Music for dinning’ I’m sure you can guess what I thought David was going to say it was called! It was here that David met a former Radio Caroline DJ and through this meeting another opportunity arose for David to move on and present a Teen Scene show. At this stage he was still only 16 or 17 years old! During this time David began to really enjoy being a DJ and having been inspired by seeing a scrap book of a fellow presenter showing a whole selection of famous musicians he’d met, he felt it was time to take action. He took a Gap year from his education and started by sending out a ten minute demo tape to a handful of radio stations, including Radio One and Radio Luxembourg. Within a few days Radio Luxembourg came back to him with a job offer on the condition that he could start within the next 96 hours! He packed his bag and off he went! It was here he acquired the nick name ‘David Kid Jenson’ due to the fact that he was the youngest DJ in Europe. Paul Burnett was the name giver but I’m sure neither of them knew just how long it would stick around! Noel Edmonds was also starting out at Luxembourg at the time, he was about 19. In fact all three DJs ended up
working at Radio One later in their careers. From here David’s career really took off ... It wasn’t long before he could be heard presenting regularly on Radio One. In 1980 an offer from the head of CBS in Atlanta caught his interest, so along with his wife Gudrun and young family, he headed off on another adventure! This job was connected to CNN and Turner Broadcasting and although it was a very exciting time and provided an amazing life style for the family, it wasn’t long before they all missed the UK. Offers from the UK soon came, following a stint on Radio 4 presenting a Religious affairs programme which David found fascinating, he was soon being invited back to Radio One. It was at this time that David formed a firm friendship with one of my own personal heroes, the amazing Mr John Peel. The two formed a great team and went on to co-host live screenings of Top of the Pops regularly. After a while a new exciting London station was beckoning. The early days of Capital Radio have left David with so many fantastic memories ... He worked alongside many great radio presenters such as Kenny Everett, Michael Aspel, Roger Scott and Graham Dene to name but a few. In the early days the DJ’s chose their own play lists and David loved the freedom to promote so many new sounds. Over the years he has interviewed virtually all the big names, even touring for a week with The Rolling Stones; interviewing The Beatles and watching them perform on the roof of their Savile Row HQ in London. Presenting a review show with guests George Harrison and Michael Jackson was one highlight for sure! Another, was when on tour with The Rolling Stones their plane
was grounded due to ice and as a result they all got out and played football together to pass the time! David said he remembers thinking ‘If my mates could see me now! Playing football on a snowy runway with The Rolling Stones!’ ‘Kid Jensen’s ‘chart show was very well regarded in the industry; apparently Kenny Everett recorded every single chart show David presented. He neatly labeled them all and filed them in order in his home recording studio! A true compliment indeed. David said that he was always surprised to find out that massive stars like Jimmy Hendrix & Bill Wyman listened to his shows. He said he was glad he didn’t know at the time or he’d have been so nervous! These days David has a slightly quieter time, enjoying life in Surrey with his family. He still keeps his hand in and recently presented shows on Surrey & Sussex Radio. I really enjoyed meeting David Jensen, he is a genuinely charming guy with so many interesting stories to tell. Very kindly, he has offered to write a regular music column for Look Local Magazine - I’m delighted! Look out next month for the first of his insightful inclusions.
Thank you so much for your time David it really was a pleasure sharing coffee with you.

Ace, King, Knave by Maria McCann (paperback £7.99) Maria McCann delivers a tremendously pacy and exciting read, writing with great insight, skill and relish. Her mastery of historical detail and tone brings Eighteenth-century London alive with all its danger and dirt. The voices of gambler and gin-dealer Betsy-Ann and the grave-robber she lives with come spiced with slang. Elsewhere in polite Bath society, the excitement of the charismatic Mr Zedland’s courtship makes Sophia all the more determined to conquer her ‘little weakness’. Both Sophia and BetsyAnn desire a fresh start, but as secrets and betrayals come to light and their lives begin to intertwine, nothing is certain but the need for action.
In Times of Fading Light by Eugen Ruge (paperback £8.99) In Times of Fading Light is a sweeping family saga that focuses on three generations of the Umnitzer family in East Germany. It follows three distinct timelines; the grandparents, committed communists, their son banished to Siberia and their grandson who defects to the West. Eugen Ruge’s novel lets the reader experience the atmosphere of political upheaval and is also the story of a country fading away.
Meeting the English by Kate Clanchy (paperback £7.99) Struan is a well-read but inexperienced teenager leaving Scotland for the first time to work as a live-in carer for a writer left immobilized by a stroke. Phillip Prys’s Hampstead milieu and privileged dysfunctional family are baffling to Struan but gradually he starts to adapt to their world as much as he recoils from it. The decency of the Scottish boy is convincing and well-sustained and readers will empathize with him and haggle over the inconsiderate, egotistical and grasping nature of others. We loved this book!

Pupils raise more than £300 at Oneday charity event
Nearly 200 children from St Andrews School in Cobham went to school dressed as their future career choice - and raised more than £300 for local charity Harrison’s Fund. The pupils took part in the Oneday campaign, which aims to highlight that as a 100% fatal disease, those children with Duchenne will not live to fulfil their career ambitions – Harrison Smith, a pupil at the school, suffers from the disease. The choice of dress up included doctors, nurses, bankers, explorers and sports players. Teachers also proved a popular choice for the youngsters, aged between 7-11 years old, with them copying the St Andrew’s teachers’ lanyards as well as dressing smartly.

CAR REVIEW Marriages, so the saying goes, are made in Heaven. Well not the one I am about to describe! The one for which I was only too happy to be matchmaker - Italy was its setting. The pairing, a handsome macho eyecatcher and a real stunner of style and elegance, made for a memorable link I shall treasure for a good while. The pairing? Beauty and the beast. The beast? A Jaguar F-type. The beauty? The exquisite Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on the water’s edge of Bellagio, Lake Como. I drove the mightily powerful Jaguar to Italy with Trophy Wife who was on duty at a Milan fashion show buying for her boutique and we opted for a stopover at the Serbelloni. And if the unashamedly admiring glances the F-type stirred in its show-off setting parked in front of the ritzy Serbelloni were anything to go by it was the perfect match! There is no doubt in my mind that the new F-for-fabulous Jaguar is the best car they have made for decades. A hark back to the glory days of the resonant E-type, with its trombone-sized exhausts, it heralds a signature tune of sound to thrill. For my money, quid-for-quid, mph-formph,mpg-for-mpg , the eagerly responsive and utterly safe F-type, as good looking and
comfy as they come, is just the car to rival the twice-as-pricey Ferraris and Astons. It begs the question: why pay an absolute fortune for a car whose performance and style can be equalled for a fraction of the cost of the so-called, mainly foreign, supercars? The F’s responses to my urgent demands for quick overtaking bursts on the autoroutes and its balance along the dodgy narrow lakeside lanes were real confidence boosters. In a choice between the V6S - my tester and the V8,I’d go for the more economical V6S which strikes the best balance and has all the kit and technology you need for a few grand less. I have owned three E-types, one after the other, and if I’d been blessed with the foresight to hold onto them and sell them at today’s value you wouldn’t be reading this because I wouldn’t have been around to write it! I’d be permanently ensconced in the Michelin-starred Serbelloni, with its mountain and lake view restaurant and movie star guests like George Clooney, with TW...

MEDICAL MATTERS!!
D I A B E T E S & E X E R C I S E Exercise goes hand in hand with diet in the management of diabetes. This is one factor we know that can make an astounding impact on insulin resistance. Just 15 minutes of exercise can re- sensitise your body to use your insulin more efficiently for several hours. Personally I have witnessed significant improvements in diabetes control with a relatively modest increase in exercise with some of my patients. Most people however groan when exercise is mentioned & seem to assume that I mean long & boring (to some!) sessions at an expensive Gym. Not at all! I try to actively dissuade patients from joining the Gym unless they particularly want to. What we are talking about is really just moving more, being more active, getting off the bus a stop early, taking the stairs instead of the lift .....things we are all aware of. This makes a difference . However what this doesn’t necessarily achieve is a good cardiovascular workout. Even so there are some simple ways of achieving this too. We should all be aiming for 15-20 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week whereby our heart rate is raised & maintained for that time. Housework, walking to work, taking a walk at lunchtime all can make an impact. Make your exercise work for you. Exercise can also energise us, lift our mood, lower our blood pressure. A little word of advise though. If you are being treated with insulin or Gliclazide just be aware that an increase in exercise may lower your blood sugar level too much & you may need some advise on how to best manage this please speak to your GP or Nurse if you experience any problems. MONTHLY TOPIC
Advice and things you need to know
from accountants SMITH PEARMAN
Avoiding 60% tax by high earners and other income tax anomalies ... Most people are aware of the income tax rates of 20% basic rate, 40% over £31,865 and 45% over £150,000, but many are not aware of the effectively 60% rate between £100,000 and £120,000.
This happens because the personal allowance is taken away when your income is over £100,000. The effective tax rates on each £1,000 of income look like this:
about it. However, for anyone in between it is really worthwhile seeing if there any way you avoid this 60% rate. So what could you do to plan your income so it is just below the £100,000 in most years? It all depends on your circumstances, but it could include:
• • •
The effect of this sudden increase in the effective tax rate is so great that for someone with an income of £200,000 the tax on the slice from £100,001 to £150,000 is actually higher than the tax on the slice from £150,000 to £200,000 – a truly strange result! Of course, if your income is below £100,000, this is of no personal concern to you. Similarly, if your income is well above £120,000 there is little you can do
Pay pension contributions to reduce the taxable income Make gift aid donations to charity (a £100 gift only costs £40 if you are in the 60%) Arrange for income to arise in different tax years.
A smaller, but similar, strange jump in rates can also affect those over 65. The extra personal allowances for age are also reduced when income exceeds £27,000. This gives an effective tax rate of 30% for income from £27,000 to £28,000 (or £28,320 for those over 75). Similar planning can help those caught in this tax band (though not pension contributions for those over 75). St. John Ambulance are a common sight at public events. The volunteer-staffed charity is wellknown for its work in assisting the UK’s health and ambulance services and providing first aid cover at a variety of venues. Howvever, in spite of the charity’s prominent appearances, some of us in the public may not know all that much about it and its work. Russell Nixon, head of the Cobham unit of St John’s is hoping to adopt a higher profile for the charity within the community, after having been approached by councillors at events in the past who had thought the service had closed down. He wants to let local people know ‘just what the charity is all about.’ Speaking with me, Russell told me all about how the Cobham unit has helped out at fireworks displays, fetes, sports days, and even put aside their building as a treatment centre during the Olympics: Two beds, as well as trained medical staff, were provided during the time trials. The charity relies on volunteers, accepting both adult volunteers and cadets of 10-18 years of age,
with many opting to stay on as adults. Many cadets choose to volunteer with St John for career reasons. One of Russell’s enjoyed her time with St John so much, that she opted to go to the University of Surrey simply to remain close enough to continue volunteering. In addition to covering community events, St John members support the UK’s ambulance service, responding to emergency calls as an auxiliary. Many volunteers work as Community First Responders; trained personnel who keep a mobile phone and first aid kit at home. They are critical in responding to local calls quickly and preparing the victim in distress for an ambulance. These aren’t the only services offered. Two first aid courses are run once a month within the Cobham building. Russell wants it known that ‘we want to train people to be the difference between life and death’ Places can be booked through the website. There’s a rich history behind the Order of Saint John, of which St John Ambulance is a part. They
originated in a monastic order founded after the First Crusade, which was tasked with running a hospice in Jerusalem to assist pilgrims and later became a full military order of the Papacy. The Order saw a steady decline after the loss of Palestine to the Saracens, relocating to Rhodes, Malta and then Rome. It saw a resurgence in the 19th century as its old purpose as a vehicle for aid was reinvigorated. Today the charity, headed by its Prior, is responsible for a variety of good causes and is no longer a solely Catholic Order; Russell himself is a member of the Church of England. Russell first joined the service at the age of 12, after he was directed to St John by the Red Cross; who had no available spaces for a young cadet. 28 years later, Russell is still volunteering as head of his unit; a role which involves a considerable amount of admin. When asked about his proudest moment with the service, Russell remembers driving his ambulance through Cobham and coming to a point where traffic had stopped to a standstill. Russell saw an
injured little girl in the street, she’d been hit by a cyclist. ‘Being in an ambulance, I couldn’t drive past.’ Russell treated her at the scene whilst the cyclist was also attended to. Though it is likely that she pulled through, Russell finds not knowing the precise fate of those he helps is the hardest part of volunteering with St John, as he only meets patients in their worst state. What’s clear is that St John Ambulance performs a critical role in alleviating the burdens on Britain’s health services. In addition, the charity offers no small amount of opportunity for volunteers in Cobham, Weybridge and Esher to give back to the community and accrue transferable skills. Cobham in particular is in need of volunteers. Whether you take a first aid course, volunteer yourself or just donate, this is a local cause that we can all support. For more info about the St John Ambulance, getting involved by volunteering or signing up to a first aid course, please visit www.sja.org.uk or you can call them using the number from our useful numbers page. GARDENING MATTERS This month, region of origin, oh so many. Without further ado… Region of origin, whether county, state or geographic area - especially if there is a particular geological distinction - is also widespread, and the plant will be uniquely from there: eg if a mountain range is represented, such as pyrenaeus or himalayense, there’s a high probability that it is an alpine, or at least fairly hardy, and will grow in temperate climates. It will probably also like sharp drainage, of the type it would have in the mountains. Many of the areas are fairly small – eg cornubiensis (Cornwall) - and therefore there are only a couple of names. By contrast, regions such as California (californicus) have a huge plant population and may have more names than many countries. Once again, the species name will give a hint as to the required conditions: anything with ‘cornubiensis’ will probably also survive well in other parts of the UK, but one described as ‘californicus’ is likely to need winter protection over here. Sometimes, plant names are not spelt as expected. pensylvanicus’, meaning ‘from Pennsylvania’ lost an ‘n’ when it was first used and never regained it. There are many towns and villages which have given their names to plants species, although most have only given rise to 1 or 2, and so you don’t see them much. Very often, out-of-the-way little villages were the only thing for miles around, and the plant hunters
had no choice but to use them as pointers for the plants they’d just discovered. Even the bigger towns often only have 1 or 2 plants. Sometimes, the name is adapted from the existing town name – eg stevenagensis, Stevenage being the original breeding ground for Gentiana stevenagensis - but with older towns, such as York (eboracensis), Exeter (exoniensis), Paris (lutetianus) or Buenos Aires (bonariensis), the old Roman name was brought into use. Other examples of this are Vienna (vindobonensis), Naples (neapolitanus) and Marseille (massiliensis). In addition, many plants have been named after specific gardens. This is mainly in the cultivar names: eg Pulmonaria officinalis ‘Sissinghurst White’ is named after Sissinghurst Castle, the famous garden in Kent belonging to Vita Sackville-West. However, sometimes the garden appears as a specific name and is then Latinised: Warley Place, once a very famous Edwardian garden belonging to Ellen Willmott, has led to the name warleyensis (and Miss Wilmott herself is immortalised in both Iris and Ceratostigma willmottiana). But the garden which has had the most plants named after it is almost certainly Kew, with the description ‘kewensis’, although most of these are hybrids which occurred there, rather than species. The whole business of nomenclature fascinates me. Despite a rather rapid romp through these names, I hope I’ve managed to pull you into this fascinating world a little too. Next time: animals!

BACK TO SCHOOL/UNIVERSITY
NOTEBOOK BUYERS GUIDE
Most schools and universities expect their students to have access to a computer and the internet for homework and coursework. To help you make the correct decision when buying a machine we have drawn up some ideas on what to look for in a notebook and to explain a bit about the terminology. The term laptop or notebook refers to exactly the same machine type, this is a portable PC which can be battery powered. Typically these machines have a display size ranging from 12” to 19” diagonal, with 15.6” being the most popular. Typically a notebook will run off battery power for around 2-4 hours, however, some are now able to run for 8 hours between charges. The average 15.6” notebook will have an inbuilt DVD drive for loading software, film playback and data backup, the smaller machines tend not to have an inbuilt DVD drive, but an external drive can be added. If the machine is running Windows 7 or 8 you’ll need to ensure it has 4Gb ram or more, also ensure the machine has a minimum of 200Gb hard drive, wireless networking. A webcam is often very useful and are almost always inbuilt. The processor or CPU cannot easily and economically be changed, therefore get the best and fastest for your needs. A Celeron, Celeron dual core CPU has limited performance, so if your needs are for word processing and basic internet work it will be ideal, but for more powerful demands it will struggle. For general needs we would recommend the Dual Core, Core i3 and Core i5 processors, for more demanding needs like design and creative work we would recommend the i5 or i7 based processor. Currently we have a range of Core i5 notebooks which are about the same price as the Core i3’s, so buying the Core i5 is a better decision! Typically a good quality, high spec notebook would cost you from £290, but please look at our advert or call in for some great offers we currently have.
The latest notebook design is the super slim, superfast Ultrabook, it enjoys higher performance, longer running battery life and is much smaller and lighter. The Acer V5 is a fantastic example and will only cost £519.00 It is probable that you will also need a printer, antivirus software and the latest Microsoft Office software. If you would like more info or advice contact us, our opening hours are Mon - Sat 9:00-5:30

‘This Planet: Our Only Home’ Transition Cobham recently collaborated with St. about the environment. ‘The 11th Hour’, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, looks at the problems making Cobham, healthier, facing our beautiful planet, such as global warming and happier and more resilient deforestation. Interestingly, ‘The 11th Hour’ was made in the same year the Transition movement began (2007). The challenges, we do have the technology and creativity pull together and act fast. As Transition’s founder, Rob Hopkins, writes: ‘If we wait for governments, it’ll be too little, too late. If we act as individuals, it’ll be just enough, just in time.’ We will be at Heritage Day on Saturday the 13th of September from 11am to 4pm. MACMILLIAN COFFEE MORNING Friday 26th September 2014 | 11 til 4pm
St. Andrews, Churchgate house Centre, Downside Bridge road, KT11 3EJ (Also accessible via Church Street )
This event is being held by a group of local ladies (& men!!) working together to make this the best year ever! For the second year running we are doing our very best to make this a special day. Many families are effected by cancer & we are aware of the importance of getting medical support, & good advice at a early stage. All monies raised will go to Macmillan which will enable that support to be given. In Surrey alone over the next 10 years nearly 80,000 people & families will be living with cancer, supported by nearly 150 Macmillan nurses - this will be a huge task which can only be achieved by events like the biggest coffee mornings.
