he Chittilappilly family loved the location of their Kingston townhouse but the space wasn’t working for them, so they appointed L&E to create a single storey extension and garage conversion, giving them a spacious kitchen/family room and an extra reception room. Jose, Delfy, Anton and George are delighted with their new space which means they can be together whilst doing different things. Delfy explains, “I do Indian cooking four or five times a week and there wasn’t enough room for me to be cooking and the kids to be with me, so I was stuck on my own in the kitchen while everyone else was upstairs.” The Chittilappillys had a clear vision of what they wanted to create and had seen magazine features on L&E. They got quotes from various different builders, but it was the L&E approach that stood out. “The surveyor was very different from other builders we’d seen. He sat down with
us to discuss in detail what we wanted and asked us lots of questions. He had lots of ideas and talked us through the whole process. By the end of the meeting, we knew exactly what we needed to do and what L&E would do.” This was particularly appealing to the couple because they hadn’t undertaken a building project before. The work began and the couple were hugely impressed with the foreman and his building team. “The whole build process was less stressful for me because I completely trusted the foreman. I had confidence in him that he never cut corners. They made improvements to our plans and were very receptive to our vision. They always approached us with solutions rather than problems,” remembers Jose. “It’s made a big, big difference to our lives. The children have more playdates, so they’re happy, and we often have friends to stay, so the entertaining space is wonderful,” smiles Delfy. This happy family has already recommended L&E to other friends.

It seems that spring has sprung ! And how lovely it is, too. We have an action-packed issue for you this month which I hope you will enjoy. I’ve had a very enjoyable month and have been out and about, visiting a number of local venues. I’m delighted to share my adventures with you here. We are delighted to include two competitions this month! Firstly, the chance to win 2 tickets for Daytona Karting at Sandown Park, suitable for 8 -15 year olds. If you like speed, you’ll love these! Also, a lovely book on motoring around France is up for grabs, a little competition brought to us by Ted Macauley. Good luck to all who enter. As well as his love of motor vehicles, Ted also enjoys a good meal out. He had a wonderful evening at a new restaurant in Esher this month. With the summer just around the corner, the tastes of Spain seem a very tempting thought. I’ve already put a date in my diary to check it out! The Cobham Clinic made me feel very welcome when I visited recently, and is keen to share its services with the good folk of Esher & Claygate. Read all about the wonderful treatment I enjoyed: it was very relaxing and really gave my skin a revitalizing lift after the winter months. W
hen I sold my Costa Blanca beachside apartment with its neighbouring famous five-star restaurant a couple of years back, I thought I would never again taste such exquisite Spanish culinary delights. And I did not - until last week when I dined at the newly-opened Bocadito tapas-restaurant-bar in Church Street,Esher. The whopping array of tasty treats would wrongfoot the fussiest of finickity eaters, and with around a hundred plates to choose from, generously large main courses and delicious smaller bites, the 80-odd seater set-up is not to be missed. My initial worry, that Memory Lane and that

culinary Costa heaven which was my stopover for 20 years would overshadow whatever the Bocadito could offer. was splendidly placated with the very first mouthful of my starter of the tenderest of baby back ribs in a bbq peanut sauce at £7.50. The meat eagerly fell off the bones as if it could not wait to be eaten. I didn’t waste its effort.Talk about yummy!! And it did not stop there. The follow-up Seared Yellow Fin Tuna with potato strips, capers and the softest orfsoft and succulent chorizo( all for £16.95) makes my mouth water thinking about it a week on. If I had any doubts about my judgement, generously
giving credit where credit was not really due, they were swept away by Trophy Wife who had the same meal and hummmmmm-ingly endorsed my unashamed appreciation of the chef ’s expertise. I must say that Bocadito is a misnomer if ever I’ve heard one : it’s Spanish for “small bites”. The vast main courses are a real test of appetite, and even the starters, tapas, appetisers, call them what you may, are proportioned in value-for-money style. I confess it took me and TW ages to choose from the array of goodies offered - enough time for me to make a biggish dent on my wine, the sooper-dooper Rioja Reserva, 2008, priced at £26.95. Afterwards, painstakingly cared for by a young
waiting-on staff, I made a vow to return to venture down the main course route. It really is a bargain banquet with the priciest item, a 12oz Jalapeno steak, only £22.50. You would have to put yourself around a good few dineries to match the value for money the Bocadito offers. And, just to add to the attraction and ease your weekend load, they serve brunch from 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday which includes a big - and I mean BIG - breakfast for £8.95. I could go on...and on...and on. But I’ll stop here, confident that, like me and TW, once you’ve been, you’ll go again. I award it Cinco Estrellas. That’s five-stars to you.

2015 marks 500 years since Cardinal Wolsey commissioned builders to lay the foundations of Hampton Court, most famously Henry VIII`s `pleasure palace` and the centre of court life for over 200 years. It was the local significance of Hampton Court – and the huge resurgence of interest in the Tudor period (Wolf Hall & Britain`s Tudor Treasure) that inspired Ember Players’ director Anne Segall to open their season with Robert Bolt`s classic ‘A Man for All Seasons’. It`s the story of Sir Thomas More, a man whose moral & principled code clashed with the dark & sinister machinations of the court of Henry VIII, as the King battled against the Church of Rome to fulfil his obsession to divorce Catherine of Aragon & marry Anne Boleyn. “But the play has a much more modern significance,” explained Anne. “It`s about the misuse of power. It`s a perfect metaphor for so much of modern corporate life, and especially politics.Thomas More, a man of conscience and integrity, is trapped in a web of manipulation and selfpromotion in a world where half-truths, misinformation, cheating, back-stabbing and spin are the norm.”

I have some heartening news for all those international bankers & tycoons & Premiership footballers who are not so sure as to how to spend their massive multi-million quid bonuses & wages, especially if they have caring concerns for their chauffeurs. It comes in the handsome & hunky shape of an extra special limousine, deemed to stir the longings of those who appreciate luxury on the go and revel in the wherewithal to be able to relax behind their smuglygrinning chauffeur or take over the drive as a matter of self-satisfaction. It is the upcoming Maybach S600, a car Mercedes-Benz reckons will be driven by only a handful of its buyers, which is why they have optimised the back seat comfort zone to a level rarely seen outside the first-class cabin on an international jet plane. It is wonderfully refined & its massive twin-turbo engine is a mere whisper, a haven of peace and quiet for privileged passengers who, enjoying vast legroom & a glass of bubbly from the central console fridge, may raise their silver-plated champagne flutes (provided as standard equipment) in celebration of their good fortune. Ahead of its promised arrival later
this year, Mercedes has vowed the brand spanking new S600, longer than the original long-wheelbase S-class by eight inches, will be the ultimate challenge to the supercar likes of the Audi A8, BMW & Lexus LS. I could not agree more. It is little short of outstanding & as safe as houses - economical, too, for its impressive size. Just to add to the assurance that the chauffeur cannot ruin the atmosphere by talking too loudly over his shoulder to the occupants in the rear seats from the far-off front end, the Maybach has installed what Mercedes call ‘voice amplification’. That’s two microphones housed in the rearview mirror which pick up the driver’s voice & play it back via speakers on the parcel shelf to the passengers, reclining if they choose at 43.5 degrees on seats adjustable through 27 electric motors. Where do all these sublime benefits stop? Not there...for while
they are benefiting from that verbal protection, a gentle breeze of perfumed air from a fragrance called Agarwood from a tree wafts around the cabin. They call this added treat their Air Balance package. “It’s a luminous golden warmth of resin, married with a striking woodiness,” is the rather pretentious promise of makers. SERVE THESE INDIVIDUAL DESSERTS WITH THEIR LUSCIOUS MIX OF FRUIT, CHOCOLATE & NUTS, ON EASTER SUNDAY • 1kg (4-5) ripe pears, peeled, cored & chopped into 1cm pieces • Grated zest & juice of 1 unwaxed lemon • 100g milk chocolate, roughly chopped • 50g light brown soft sugar For the crumble • 100g plain flour • 50g butter, chilled and diced • 50g light brown soft sugar • ½ x 100g pack Waitrose Roasted Chopped Hazelnuts

The 7 Ages of Tax Planning - No 1. Childhood Children are not just expensive; they can also offer opportunities for tax planning! Tax allowances Many people do not realise that children, just like adults, have their own personal tax allowances. This is probably because most of the allowances go unused – and it is fair to say that they go unused, at least in part, because many people are unaware of them! Any child can have income of up to £10,000 in 2014-15 without paying income tax. Compared to a parent taxed at 20% this is worth £2,000 a year, or £4,000 if the parent is taxed at 40%, or even £4,500 for parents taxed at 45%. Over eighteen years, even at 20%, this is worth £36,000. It is not possible for a parent simply to give a child income by transferring assets to the child – such income remains the parent’s for tax purposes while the child is a minor. However, transfers of assets by someone else, for example a grandparent, will produce income that does belong to the child. The rules only disallow gifts from a living parent – therefore setting up a trust fund for your children in your will can help to add to the family’s net income after death.

Pension contributions Probably even fewer people realise that children can make pension contributions, even if they have no earnings. Anyone can pay up to a total of £2,880 into a personal pension for a child. Tax relief is added so the pension fund becomes £3,600. Of course, the child cannot get the money until at least age 55, but some may see this as an advantage building a ‘nest-egg’ for a child’s eventual retirement. If £2,880 is paid in each year for eighteen years it will have cost £51,840. If the fund were to grow at 3% a year after charges, it could be worth over £200,000 when the child reaches the age of 55. If contributions are paid every year, there can also be inheritance tax savings as well. Junior ISA For 2015-16 onwards, all children under eighteen can have a Junior ISA. Up to £4,000 can be paid in each year and it works like an adult ISA with no income tax payable on any income. The funds cannot be taken out until the child is eighteen when they then have full access to them. This is one way a parent can transfer money to a child without the income still being treated as the parent’s. Again, if contributions are paid every year, there can also be inheritance tax savings as well. Of course, any of these steps have to be done correctly to ensure they have the desired tax advantages.

SECURES HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND INVESTMENT & TO UNDERGO A SIGNIFICANT REDEVELOPMENT
O
ne of the UK’s most historically significant sites for motoring, aviation and engineering is to undergo a major redevelopment to bring to life more of its remarkable history, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, Surrey, has recently received a confirmed grant of £4.681million from HLF for its Brooklands Aircraft Factory & Race Track Revival Project. This project will transform the Museum’s Grade II listed Second World War Wellington Hangar into ‘The Brooklands Aircraft Factory’; build a new annexe (the ‘Flight Shed’) to house more of the Museum’s outstanding collection of historic aircraft; restore the Finishing Straight of the Brooklands Race Track, the world’s first purpose-built motor-racing circuit. Brooklands Museum Director Allan Winn says: “This support from Lottery players is a real vindication of the Museum’s vision of bringing a wartime temporary aircraft assembly building back to life as the only place in the country dedicated to showing how aircraft are designed and built. This unique exhibition – coupled as it is with a new home for our live aircraft, new

workshops and stores, and the restoration of the Finishing Straight of the Race Track to its 1939 appearance – will give visitors of all ages an unmatched immersive and imaginative experience. We are now really looking forward to working with our consultants, contractors and volunteers to turn this fantastic vision into an exciting reality.” The Museum has already been successful in raising over £1.2million to match funding for the project and is currently fundraising for the remaining £775,000. Blues in Surrey In this column, I want to share with you news of what could be Surrey’s best-kept secret. A couple of weeks ago, I met up with some very friendly guys who are so dedicated to live music that they founded their own music venue at The Hersham Sports & Social Club, which they call the Surrey Blues Club. The address is 128 Hersham Road, Walton-on -hames, KT12 5QL On the first Friday of the month, Blues fans gather to hear live favourites, such as The Good Old Boys who played there recently,. This band features Nick Simper from the original Deep Purple & Richard Hudson from The Strawbs. Upcoming appearances from The Nigel Bagge Band, the Voodoo Sheiks, Blue Business, the Mike Ross Band, Bitter Blues & Meal Ticket should have The Surrey Blues Club really rockin’. The venue can hold 180 fans, but 60 is a more comfortable number. Entrance is free & the place is airconditioned, with beer at under £3 a pint. It’s great to know that live music is attracting so much attention lately & even better when a venue like the Surrey Blues Club is in our back garden! At the other end of the concert scale, I’ve been working with some local-based chums on what will be a fantastic event on 15th June at the Royal Albert Hall. It’s an evening dedicated to the life & time of one of the last century’s most revered & influential legends, Lead Belly. Artists on the night include Van Morrison, Billy Bragg, Jules Holland, the fantastic Laurence Jones, Eric Burdon, of the Animals fame, Ruby Turner & many more. I’ll be telling the captivating story behind the formidable Lead Belly, in between the stars who’ll be playing the music made famous by Lead Belly. The Starlight Chase charity will benefit from the evening, as they do such an incredible job with their own children’s hospice here in Surrey. Wednesday 15 th April 2015 We are enjoying an embarrassment of riches for this occasion and it was not possible to announce our final choice before this April issue closed for press. We can only promise it will uphold our reputation for fine music and extend the musical repertoire. They will be shown on our website later.
